STOP CRUISE SHIP POLLUTION

Our community deserves clean air to breathe.

But for more than 10 years since White Bay Cruise Terminal opened, we have been a dumping ground for the cruising industry’s oldest and dirtiest ships. Disappointingly, the NSW Labor Government have backed away from their promise to our community to install shore power by the end of this year. Now our community will face up to three more summers with toxic fumes pumping into homes and schools from docked cruise ships. I’m calling on the government to keep their promise and install shore power at White Bay as a priority. I’m also introducing a bill to Parliament to mandate the use of shore power for all cruise ships that come into White Bay. Join our campaign for clean air by scanning the QR code below and using our template to email the Minister for Transport calling on them to deliver shore power at White Bay.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, I’m here to help

The Genesian Theatre finds new spotlight in Rozelle

After operating from a historic church in the city for the past 70 years, one of Sydney’s longest-established theatre companies will now call Rozelle home — and very soon. The company has announced that their new season will start on January 10 in the brand new 130-seat playhouse. Performances are planned for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays throughout most of the year.

For decades, the Genesian Theatre has been providing live and exhilarating performances to patrons at affordable prices. Tickets are generally between $25 and $35, ensuring all demographics can enjoy the talent and entertainment on display.

Barry Nielsen, Genesian Theatre Director, commented, “We are so pleased to have found a great new venue so close by that will be easy for our many loyal patrons to attend – and we are also keen to attract locals from the Rozelle area and offer them our tradition of highquality productions at an affordable price.”

The new theatre, located in the old school hall next to St Joseph’s Catholic Church on Gordon Street is being developed with a comprehensive theatrical fit-out. The theatre will also be the most accessible it’s ever been with wheelchair and walker access.

Director Barry Nielsen acknowledged the bittersweet nature of leaving the central Sydney premises but highlighted the advantages of the new venue, which will be a modern asset for the inner west community, an area with few purpose-built theatre spaces. The new theatre is close to the newly reopened White Bay Power Station, which is set to become another cultural hub, and within walking distance of many pubs and restaurants.

The Genesian Theatre boasts a rich history as the launching pad for prominent talents such as Baz Luhrmann, Bryan Brown, Judi Farr, John Bell and Peter Carroll. Entirely volunteerrun, the theatre serves as a valuable training ground for aspiring actors and practitioners aiming to transition into professional careers and those who view acting, directing or design as a lifelong passion.

The theatre welcomes sponsorship from the community who love the arts. There is an opportunity to ‘sponsor a seat’ in the new theatre.

The team at the theatre are keen to meet the Rozelle community through a number of community events and are working with nearby schools and groups to find the next round of theatre talent.

Summer flavours at The Dry Dock

With a new outdoor dining area, The Dry Dock is gearing up for summer. We sat down with Head Chef, Ben Sitton, to hear about his favourite flavours and menu inspirations this season.

Summer is always an exciting time of the year, says Ben. The flavours are fresh, colours are brighter, and there is more variety of produce to work with.

It’s been great to launch our outdoor dining where guests can enjoy dishes like our Blood Orange Salad, which is filled with colour and texture. The combination of roasted leeks,

macadamia, buffalo curd and pecorino paired with juicy chunks of blood orange delivers a delicious tartness.

Menu inspiration

Inspired by summer’s freshest produce, this menu highlights the vibrant flavours and textures of the season. Each dish is crafted to showcase locally farmed ingredients at their peak, celebrating the lightness and brightness of summer.

The Salt Baked Yellow Carrot is a must try, locally farmed organic yellow carrots are covered with a salt crust and slowly baked to enhance the flavour of the dish. We pair the carrots with an onion puree, broad beans, asparagus, baby zucchini and chives a la nage.

Green asparagus is another favourite ingredient, the crunchy and fresh texture combined with the sauce gribiche, fresh herbs and our hand-cut pickled shallots taste as good as they look.

King Rainbow Trout and Balmain Bugs

These are beautiful months for seafood, I love our Roast Queensland Scallops topped with Nduja butter and finished with fried bread, lemon and chives. Our new King Rainbow Trout Fillet is a standout, plus our super fresh Balmain or Moreton Bay Bugs served with a delicious tarragon mayonnaise.

Cooking over fire

Cooking over fire and charcoal is my passion, so I never tire of firing up our Josper wood fire oven and grill. Our Little Joe Grain Fed T-bone with burnt lemon and red wine pan sauce is perfect to pair with a great bottle from our award-winning wine list. In fact, this is my perfect dining escape.

I am always focused on working with the best quality, locally sourced produce, which ensures each dish is as fresh and flavoursome as possible. This commitment allows me to create an exceptional menu that highlights the season’s finest ingredients.

Supporting local farmers and producers helps strengthen our community and brings genuine flavour to each dish. It lets me create a dining experience that’s both memorable and sustainable.

Five minutes with...

Known nationally as a writer, performer and broadcaster, Balmain resident Chris Taylor is perhaps best known for his work with satirical comedy troupe The Chaser, as well as for more recent television shows such as Upright and Australian Epic. We sat down with Chris to discuss Balmain life, comedy and growing too old for stunts.

How long have you lived in the area? I moved to Balmain in 2015, just in time to see a lot of my favourite pubs turned into gyms.

How would you describe Balmain to an outsider?

Balmain’s a winningly eclectic peninsula suburb that sits on a part of Sydney Harbour where tugboats, barges and ferries still happily outnumber super-yachts. Architecturally, it’s an odd jumble of historic charmers and 1980s abominations, but mercifully the charmers still have their nose in front.

A walk through the suburb’s endlessly discoverable backstreets and laneways is still one of Sydney’s great joys. The streets themselves are narrow, but evidently not narrow enough to dissuade every resident from buying an SUV. I live on one of the suburb’s widest streets, which means we have the luxury of not having to park our vehicle on the footpath.

Like most peninsula suburbs, Balmain is a tightknit, parochially proud community, whose diverse population runs the full gamut from English ex-pats who work in finance all the way to English ex-pats who work in insurance. In fact, I think the only demographic to outnumber expatriate Englishmen are Cavoodles.

Sure, the suburb has seen some changes over the decades. But Darling St remains a thriving hotbed of pharmacies, bakeries and optometrists. Indeed, providing you

never need anything other than Panadol, finger buns and new spectacles, you don’t ever need to leave the suburb at all. And why would you? This is Balmain: a place so special that it even has its own dedicated Facebook page, where every resident writes up to 100 posts a day discussing the new Woolies.

Are any topics out of bounds for comedy? Perhaps to my detriment at times, I’ve always believed everything is fair game. Comedy is such a subjective and personal thing that the lines of taste will be different for every individual. So I’m not sure it’s healthy for a society to have rules about which topics are acceptable for comedy, and which are not. It’s also not in the spirit of creative freedom. A comedian should always be free to joke about anything they wish, but they can’t be lazy with that freedom: the creative challenge for them is to frame their material in a way that will be acceptable –

and funny – for their audience. And if they get it wrong, there’ll be no shortage of virtuous people lining up to tell them.

Are you still into stunts or have you grown out of that?

I actually turned 50 recently. And I do think there comes a time in life where chasing politicians down a street, dressed in a chicken suit, lacks a little dignity. I do slightly mourn the decline of the stunt in today’s comedy (although I see groups like Led By Donkeys in the UK still keeping the tradition alive), but I’m pretty glad it’s no longer my job to do it. I feel much more comfortable these days behind a keyboard.

Northern Beaches or the Inner West? Well, I guess it depends what you’re after. If you’re after a day at the beach, I couldn’t really recommend the inner west. But if you’re after a fascinating day admiring the intricacies of the Rozelle Interchange, then the Inner West definitely has you covered.

One year of FOGO

Since its launch on 9 October 2023, the community’s diligent participation in the Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) Recycling Service has significantly cut household waste going to landfill, reducing carbon emissions. It’s a major environmental win for the inner west.

By using FOGO over the past twelve months, inner west residents have recovered 16,059 tonnes of organic waste and prevented 8,800 tonnes of garbage from entering landfill!

Inner West Council extends its sincerest thanks and a massive congratulations to its residents for a hugely successful first year of the FOGO Recycling Service.

To put these numbers into perspective, the community’s efforts has led to positive and practical outcomes, including:

Reduced Carbon Emissions: Equivalent emissions to powering 9,750 homes for a year.

Pollution Prevention: Equivalent to taking 19,025 passenger vehicles off the road annually.

Waste Management: Keeping 56,421 wheelie bins (240L) of waste out of landfill.

Volume Reduction: Preventing the waste equivalent of 5.4 Olympic-sized swimming pools from entering landfill. These great results will only get stronger as this service continues with the support of our local community.

FAST FOGO TIPS

Bin liners can be collected at service centres.

Meat bones, oysters and paper teabags can go in FOGO.

Dog poo and poo bags cannot go in FOGO.

Sprinkle bicarb in the bin to absorb liquids and prevent odour.

Store your benchtop bin away from direct sunlight.

New Council, more progress

Firstly, I’d like to thank the people of the Inner West for returning a majority of 8 Labor councillors for our new term of 2024-2028.

It’s now time to build on the successes of our previous term and we have a clear set of priorities that we will deliver.

We appreciate your trust and support and will be working collaboratively with all newly elected councillors to deliver for you.

Our priorities include:

Strong financial management including no special rate rises for the next four years

Delivering new planning controls to address the housing affordability and supply crisis

Renovating iconic Leichhardt Oval

Upgrading and rebuilding Leichhardt Pool

Creating a state-of-the-art indoor sports centre at Tempe

Opening new special entertainment precincts throughout the main streets of the Inner West

Making White Bay Power Station a permanent, world class arts and cultural venue

The rise of Pilates

Last we counted, Balmain and Rozelle boasted 15 Pilates studios. And that’s not even counting the physios and gyms offering Pilates or the studios that have probably popped up since we started writing this article. So, what’s behind this neighbourhood’s endless pursuit of core strength?

It’s been over 100 years since Joseph Pilates developed his revolutionary approach to building strength and stamina. Today, Pilates is one of the most popular ways to train –across all ages. Pilates involves a collection of low-impact exercises that coordinate movement and breath. The focus is on building strength and mobility, improving postural alignment and strengthening core stabilising muscles. Whether you choose mat Pilates, reformer Pilates, classic Pilates, HIIT Pilates or another variation, each offers a unique path to incredible health benefits.

A strong core Pilates focuses on strengthening the core, which is the foundation of nearly every movement. A strong core improves posture,

balance, and overall body stability. It protects the spine and reduces the risk of injury.

Improved balance

The focus on mindful movement heightens body awareness. This, together with a strong core, can prevent injuries and falls, which is particularly important as we age.

Increased mobility

Pilates stretches and lengthens the muscles, which helps improve flexibility over time. While improved flexibility doesn’t necessarily provide any functional benefit, increased mobility is valuable as it improves the movement of your joints. This increased range of motion makes everyday activities easier and safer, reducing stiffness and discomfort.

Stress relief

During Pilates, your nervous system responds to the focus on breathwork by lowering cortisol levels, which will reduce stress over time. And, like with any exercise, the increased oxygen flow and blood circulation stimulate feel-good endorphins and give you a boost of energy.

Promotes functional strength

Rather than isolating individual muscles, Pilates targets functional strength – working multiple muscle groups together in a balanced way. This approach supports daily movements like lifting, bending, and twisting which can benefit individuals at any stage of life. It improves endurance and helps prevent common muscular imbalances that can lead to pain and injury.

A voice for everyone

ABC’s The Assembly follows autistic journalism students, mentored by Leigh Sales, as they interview high-profile guests like Amanda Keller and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. It’s a heartwarming, unfiltered series. We spoke with local participant Abbey Faulkner to hear about her experience.

Tell us a little bit about yourself I just turned 21 and had a big party to celebrate with friends and family. I was born with a condition called Arthogryposis Multiplex Congenita which means I can’t walk and I’m in a wheelchair. I’m also neurodivergent. I love listening to music and going to concerts and musicals. I just saw Sister Act which was my 37th musical – I love them!

What drew you to participate in The Assembly?

Ever since I was little, I wanted to be on TV and become famous. I’m confident in front of the camera and have attended drama classes over the years. After finishing school, I struggled to find work and study opportunities, but then we saw an ad for this program, and I applied. Getting in has truly changed my life.

What was the most surprising thing you learned on the show?

I couldn’t believe how all the celebrities opened up. I even made Sam Neill cry when I asked him about his family. All the celebrities were very nice. I also learnt a lot about autism and how good it was to participate in an inclusive environment.

Did you have any particularly memorable interactions?

Getting to sing and dance with Delta Goodrem was a dream come true!

What role do shows like The Assembly play in breaking down stereotypes about autism?

I hope people will have a better understanding of autism and understand that we’re all the same. We all want to have a meaningful job, feel valued and have a purpose.

What’s your advice to young autistic people wanting to pursue a career in media?

Give it a try! Participating in The Assembly and pursuing a career in journalism is one of the best experiences I’ve had.

Did the show help you find paid work?

Since the show ended, I’ve been doing an internship at the ABC which is about to come to an end. I had the opportunity to interview Chris Hemsworth on the red carpet, and I interviewed players at the Dally M’s. It’s been a great experience, but I still don’t have a proper job. However, there are a few opportunities I’m following up on.

What’s next?

My dream role is to be a presenter on Play School, and I enjoy interviewing celebrities. For now, I’ll continue volunteering in the Starlight room whilst looking for job opportunities.

Unchoir, a harmony of health, happiness and community

The Balmain Rozelle Unchoir was born in May 2019, a dream brought to life by founder Vijay Solanki. Inspired to create a space where everyone could find joy in singing, Vijay brought together founding members Mike Fairhurst, Sita Bala Milroy, Sophi Bruce, and brilliant choir lead, Leah Rosalky. Together, they have built a welcoming community centred on a simple belief: Everyone Can Sing.

Singing isn’t just fun – it’s genuinely good for you! Science tells us that group singing offers powerful physical and mental health benefits. Singing in a group reduces stress levels, releases endorphins, and even boosts your immune system. Psychologically, singing connects us with others, fostering a sense of belonging and elevating our mood. At the Unchoir, they witness these benefits every week as members leave each session happier and feeling part of something special.

Their journey has been filled with memorable moments, each adding a new chapter to the Unchoir story. Six months after forming, they hosted their first 80’s night at the East Village Hotel, a vibrant evening full of neon, nostalgia, and unforgettable tunes. They’ve performed in front of 2,000 people at the Beer Footy Food Festival - an experience that left them feeling like true rockstars. In 2023, they hosted a Punk Disco night at Balmain Sailing Club, where they added a little punk spirit to their harmonies, and all proceeds of the night supported local charity Good in the Hood. Their singalong of “Love is in the Air” on the Balmain East to Barangaroo ferry spread smiles across Sydney Harbour.

Each December, they celebrate the season with their annual Christmas SingCrawl, carolling through the heart of Balmain and bringing festive cheer to the local community. For those who join in, the SingCrawl is a reminder of the joy that comes from sharing music, laughter, and the spirit of togetherness. Through it all,

The London Hotel has been their steadfast home, supporting the choir with a welcoming space for their weekly gatherings.

None of these events would have been possible without their incredible members, who give their time and energy to make every performance a success. They are grateful for the dedication of Craig, Bobby, Nikki, Nancy, Carol, Jane, and countless others who help run these special evenings. This community spirit is at the heart of what makes the Unchoir so special.

The Unchoir is always open to new voices. It’s a place where there’s no stigma in singing, and everyone’s voice is celebrated. So, if you’re looking to experience the benefits of singing, look no further than the Balmain Rozelle Unchoir.

A tribute to a local legend

I don’t recall the exact moment when George first walked into Bertoni, but it was about 17 years ago, and it felt like he had always been there. Conversations often began with Italy — food, culture, people and of course, soccer. Italy had captured his heart, and I guess he found his local piece of it at the cafe.

His eyes would sparkle with infectious passion when describing a favourite dish or reminiscing about his travels. He had a deep connection to food and family, just like us –and it was through this common ground that the friendship between us blossomed.

When we created the Bertoni cookbook which included our family’s Italian migration stories, choosing someone to write the foreword was a no brainer – it had to be George. He gave a speech at our book launch as if he was a proud uncle. To us, and to many in the Balmain community, that’s exactly what he was – family.

George lived in Balmain for many decades and was a familiar, beloved figure in the neighbourhood. Despite his fame, he carried no airs. He held strong opinions yet he never

passed judgement. Conversations with George were genuine, he truly listened and engaged. He loved to share a thoughtful word or discuss all things Italy. He was humble, approachable and always ready to share a laugh. His warmth, curiosity and kindness touched everyone he met.

Professionally his legacy spreads far. A renowned journalist and storyteller, he was known for his fearless pursuit of truth. George shaped Australian journalism over several decades with his unflinchingly honest, and yet deeply compassionate voice. His work included anchoring prominent news programs such as 60 Minutes and Foreign Correspondent, where he would interview world leaders and bring global issues to the forefront. This helped establish him as a trusted presence in Australian homes.

George inspired us to question, to listen, and to care more deeply about the world and our community. His legacy reaches beyond iconic interviews and groundbreaking stories. His influence will continue to shape values for generations to come and his presence will live on in the memories of those of us who had the privilege to know him.

Farewell George – you will be missed.

Maximise value in your bathroom reno

A well-designed bathroom not only makes everyday routines smoother, it can also add real value to your property.

Mat from Ballast Point Architects + Builders has years of experience renovating bathrooms across the inner west. He shares six essential tips to help you get the most out of your bathroom renovation.

1. Get the floor plan right

Getting your floor plan right is one of the most important things you can do. Many people think they’re stuck with the current plumbing or the existing floor plan, but there’s a lot of flexibility here. Adjustments like moving plumbing or drainage can add a lot of value and make the space feel right. And it’s not as expensive as people think.

2. Invest in quality tradespeople

Quality trades, especially finishing trades, make all the difference. There’s nothing worse than spending good money on amazing stone tiles only to have them poorly laid. A quality team will ensure everything is done right, from start to finish.

3. Harmonise finishes

It’s crucial for colours and textures to harmonise throughout the space. You may

want a striking feature wall or fall in love with a particular tile that looks great on its own, but it can feel very different once it’s up on the wall and part of the whole bathroom. Ensuring that finishes, tapware, and other details all work together is key to creating a cohesive and stylish look.

4. Document every detail

Good documentation makes a big difference. We lay out every fitting, every hook, and every tap to make sure it all comes together smoothly. There’s nothing worse than tradespeople having to guess where things go or making decisions on the fly.

5. Minimise glass

Sometimes less is more with glass. Overglazing a bathroom can make it feel smaller and more cluttered. Doors and glass panels can be overused, but if the shower is deep enough, you may not even need any glass at all. Minimising glass can help make the space feel larger, and sometimes a single piece of glass is all you need to keep the water contained without closing things off too much.

6. Use lighting to create mood

Lighting can add a lot of value for a small cost. LED lights are cost-effective and placing them in the right spots, like in a niche or under a vanity, can create a pleasant mood. A soft light that stays on overnight is practical and can add a nice ambience without being too bright or disturbing.

Celebrating every word

Children’s early milestones are moments of joy as they provide glimpses into how their minds begin to interact with the world around them. From their first coos to conversations, each age brings its own unique milestones. We spoke to Lucy Smith, Speech Pathologist at Kids and Cubs Clinic to learn more about this language journey.

Birth to 12 months

Babies lay the groundwork for communication in heartwarming ways. Early interaction shines as newborns engage through eye contact and smiles. By 6 months, babbling starts in back-and-forth exchanges with sounds like “ba” or “da”. These early sounds are music to any parent’s ears, and around 9-12 months, many babies begin to say their first words like “mama” or “dada.” Babies will recognise their name, understand simple phrases like “no” or “bye,” and respond by looking at familiar objects. Meanwhile, expression starts with gestures, like pointing or waving, before those exciting first words appear.

12 to 24 months

Here children explode with language! Toddlers use gestures, words, and expressions to get attention, ask for help, show excitement and begin experimenting with pretend play. Their speech sound journey really begins and you’ll hear many more consonants come to life like ‘p’, ‘b’, ‘d’, ‘n’, ‘m’ and ‘h’. Mispronunciation is common as they master the art of speaking – it’s all part of the journey. By age two, children understand simple questions, follow instructions, and recognise the names of people

and objects in their world. Their talking explodes too, growing from single words to two-word combinations like “more juice”. They will say around 50 words by 18 months, and this quickly jumps to hundreds by their second birthday!

2 to 4 years

At this stage, children’s communication becomes richer. They enjoy talking about their day, asking many “why” questions, and stringing together longer sentences. They engage in conversations and their imaginative, role-play flourishes. Understanding skills sharpen as they follow longer instructions and grasp concepts. Pronunciation becomes clearer, with children saying most sounds correctly by age four. Some trickier sounds like “r” or “th” may take more time to master.

4 to 6 years

By kindergarten, children are ready for complex social interactions. They take turns in conversation and tell detailed stories while asking thought-provoking questions. Children understand multi-step directions in a busy classroom and appreciate the nuances of humour. They can speak clearly enough for strangers to understand them.

Each of these milestones is a celebration of your child’s growth and connection with their world. Every child is unique, and milestones may be reached at slightly different times. If you ever have concerns about your child’s communication, be sure to speak with a speech pathologist.

Have you done your Christmas shopping yet?

Is there any other question that sends a bigger shiver down your spine?

That and maybe your GP asking: “How many drinks do you have a week?”

But that’s another story. Christmas shopping is a burden for most of us. The terror of overpaying, of missing out on limited stock, of choosing the right thing, of running out of time. And then there are the dreaded delivery times compounding everything.

But what if there were somewhere we could go, a place that has all kinds of shops selling every type of gift you can think of?

A place on your doorstep that you can walk to and even pay cash if you like.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you: Darling Street!

We are lucky to have such a sturdy high street scene. From Balmain East, where you’ll find the likes of Bits of Australia, all the way to where Darling Street has become Balmain Road down to Otter Craft Distilling, it’s one long shopping strip.

Toy shops, bookshops, art and cheese. Fashion boutiques, jewellers, day spas, and wine are all

options for Christmas gifts, and they are all found locally.

So now we’ve established that you can shop locally, let’s talk about what happens when you do.

1. No more worries about loss, delay or damage

Whenever we’ve shopped online in the past, something always ends up in the limbo land of logistics dispatch. Or equally appalling, the risk that you’ll miss the delivery (hands up who enjoys waiting in the Christmas queue at the post office).

You can even gift things that wouldn’t make the delivery journey — either because they’re too delicate or perishable. Who doesn’t want something delicious from Cheese Celebration that you’ve kept in the fridge until Christmas morning? Why wouldn’t you give beautiful glassware from Mecque?

2. You’ll find better gifts You’ll find all kinds of unique, unusual or handmade gifts when you shop on the peninsula. Things that you’re not likely to find anywhere else. Two Baskets has a lovely range of gifts and homewares, Burrow & Be and Daisy.Kids+Life has sustainably made clothes and

Bits of Australia
Two Baskets

toys for the little ones, and Blokes is packed with choice, from the elegant to the novel.

A lot of us forget that the idea of gifts is in the giving. If what you’re putting under the tree doesn’t mean anything to you or the person you’ve bought it for, what’s the point?

3. Dodge the shopping centre bullet

Shopping centres are fine for everyday things, but do they really help much when you’re looking for something special?

Plus, who really enjoys the torment of finding a space in the dungeon car park? Who relishes those lost hours trudging round the endless, soulless paths of a mall with nothing to show for it? Who thinks Christmas is all about lining up for hours at a checkout? No, I didn’t think so.

When you’ve got the likes of Angel Aromatics, That Plant Shop and Home Industry for beautiful candles, plants

and pots, and all things upholstered and vintage ceramics just down the road, there’s no need to struggle through traffic and put yourself through the pain of a shopping centre.

4. Save yourself time

One of the main reasons we’re all so stressed with Christmas shopping is because we never have enough time. If you can shop almost everything you need within walking distance, you could get it all done in an afternoon. That’s the crux of shopping local.

There’s no need for sitting in traffic or pushing through city crowds. You don’t have the stress of watching your tracking number tell you your purchase is stuck in Chullora, wherever that is. And let’s not forget, if you get tired of walking from shop to shop in Balmain, you’re never far from the Heritage Pub Trail when you need a pitstop! Plus there’s no shortage of cafes if you need a caffeine or food fix.

5. Be part of the community It might sound a bit cheesy, but when you spend time where you live, you become part of a bigger picture. That’s what community is all about.

The money you spend goes to a small business, supporting it and strengthening the area you’ve chosen to live in. The thing that you bought could well have been made by someone nearby — you might even know them or have sat in the same cafe.

So, this Christmas, we challenge you: how much of your gift shopping can you get done without leaving the peninsula, without leaving it up to Amazon and by shopping local?

FRIDAY BARNES: COLLISION COURSE

R.A Spratt | Mystery

This book is the 12th and most recent in the Friday Barnes series. Friday and her best friend, Melanie, smuggle themselves into Switzerland to try and prevent her mum ending up in jail. Their adventure is very exciting but humorous as well.

THE WAR THAT SAVED MY LIFE

Kimberly Brubaker Bradley | Historical Fiction

All her life, Ada was never allowed to leave her tiny apartment, because her mother was ashamed of her twisted foot. Then war comes to London, and Ada’s life changes forever. This book is set in World War 2, and surprisingly, the war affects the character’s life positively. Great read!

Keeping your pet cool

As Sydney’s summer heat intensifies, keeping pets safe and comfortable is essential. Dr. Bianca Betros from the new Darling Street Vets in Balmain shares over 20 years of expertise to help you protect your furry friend.

Growing up on a farm in Tenterfield, in northern NSW, Bianca was constantly surrounded by a large variety of animals including dogs, cats, chickens, rabbits, kangaroos, cattle and horses. It was clear from an early age that the veterinary world was her calling. After years working in small animal practices in Sydney and the UK, she opened a veterinary practice in Bundanoon in the Southern Highlands. Having spent much time in Balmain over the past three years, she’s now opened a practice here. Darling Street Vets is a full-service first opinion practice and Bianca and her team supports locals in making the best healthcare decisions, so our pets can live happy, healthy and long lives.

Bianca says, “The village atmosphere and community spirit is incredibly strong here, which is something I truly appreciate. The fact it’s so dog friendly is an awesome bonus! Winston my miniature Schnauzer knows where to get the best treats in the village!”

The experienced team at Darling Street Vets know all too well how dangerous soaring summer temperatures can be for pets. Bianca says, “There are some simple measures we can take to make sure our pets stay comfortable and safe.”

Keep hydrated

Make sure your pet always has fresh, clean and ideally cool water available. And place their bowl on a flat surface so it can’t be knocked over. Ice treats are a fun and effective way to keep cool. Bianca recommends frozen fruit and veggies, Petsypoles and toys that can filled with water and frozen.

Seek shelter

Shade or shelter out of direct sunlight is vital. Avoid shelters made of corrugated iron and similar materials as they can trap heat and cause overheating. A fan near your dog’s bed or air-conditioning can also be an effective way to cool down.

Splash around

Letting your dog have some fun in a half-filled paddling pool placed in the shade is a great way for them to cool down. But don’t let them get over-excited while they’re playing as this

Darling Street Vet team with Winston the resident clinic dog.

can cause over-heating. Complete submersion isn’t necessary to get the benefits of a paddling pool – just having their paws in the water can help your dog cool down.

Plan your walks

On very hot days, walk your dog at sunrise and after sunset. It’ll be too hot in the middle of the day and the footpath can cause burns to their paws. If they get restless during the day, activities such as treat puzzles or training exercises may be an option to stimulate them.

Slip, slop, slap

Sunburn can affect any dog or cat but occurs more commonly in animals with white and/ or thin coat, or if they are ‘sunbathers’ – they love to lie on their backs, exposing their bellies to the sun. The most common places to be affected include the nose, ears and belly. When sunburnt, the skin will look pink or red. Prevention of sunburn is important but can be difficult. Limit sun exposure and wear protective clothing and sunscreen. There are a number of options for doggie sunscreens including Filta-bac Sunfilter and Dr Zoo Natural Sun Cream.

Know the signs of heatstroke

Overheating can lead to heatstroke which happens when your pet is unable to regulate their body temperature. Some signs to look out for are excessive panting and salivation, feeling hot to the touch, vomiting/diarrhoea, lethargy or frantic behaviour or collapse or seizure. This condition can be fatal and the earlier it’s treated, the better. If you’re worried your pet may be suffering from heat stroke, take them to the vet straight away.

Avoid hot cars

Never leave your pet in the car! It can take less than 10 minutes for temperatures inside a car to reach a potentially fatal level for your dog. Temperatures exceeding 40C can lead to death and this can happen very quickly, even if a vehicle is left in the shade.

DARLING STREET VETS

darlingstreetvets.com.au

STAY ON TOP OF PARASITE PROTECTION

Bianca recommends year-round protection from fleas and ticks but it’s particularly important during the warmer months when parasites are more prevalent.

Ticks

There are a variety of ticks around. Some ticks carry blood-borne diseases and others can cause paralysis. If you find a tick on your pet, it needs to be removed as soon as possible, either by you or your vet.

If the tick is a paralysis tick, paralysis can still develop up to two days after the tick has been removed. This horrible parasite can cause paralysis and death if your pet is left untreated. Signs of tick paralysis include wobbliness, weakness, or paralysis in the hind legs, which may later spread to the front legs. This progression can eventually result in an inability to stand. Other signs to watch out for include a cough, a change in bark, vomiting or gagging, forced expiration or laboured breathing. If you notice any of these signs, it’s vital that your pet is taken to the vet immediately as they’ll need to be hospitalised and treated with tick antiserum.

Fleas

Fleas can cause symptoms such as severe itchiness, skin irritation, flea allergy dermatitis and blood loss which can be very debilitating for your pet. Fleas also tend to be very difficult to eliminate from an environment once they are there, so prevention is definitely the best option!

Birchgrove Oval, the first home of the Tigers

The unique harbourside sporting ground of Birchgrove Oval is loved by locals and awed by visitors. Balmain Association shares the oval’s sporting history.

An early local land developer was imaginative naming Snails Bay as the Miniature Bay of Naples. In 1810, Birchgrove was named after John Birch who purchased the 74-hectare property and built a house there named Birch Grove.

By the late 1870s the head of Snails Bay, inland from the current sea wall, was an unhealthy expanse of mudflats. Developers were keen on selling the land around the bay but the obnoxious smells at low tide were a deterrent to buyers.

In 1880, the Parkes government allocated £200,000 to buy back alienated land and purchased several of the blocks around the head of Snails Bay.

At the time, Balmain, with its hilly topography, had no flat space suitable for football and cricket for its growing population.

A Birchgrove Park trust was set up in 1882 and architect and surveyor Ferdinand Reuss planned a park with landscape gardening, walks and shrubbery, with a big oval cricket ground.

Progress was slow. In 1887 a dyke was built across the bay and the mudflats were filled with stone from Cockatoo Island’s Sutherland Dock excavation. Tenders were called in May 1886 to lay a practice cricket pitch and the Mayor had to ask Balmain Council to stop tipping refuse on the site. The depression in the 1890s stopped progress until 1897, but by 1904, the present seawall and the path known as Deloitte Avenue was completed, and the oval was being used by Balmain’s cricket and rugby union clubs.

Ferdinand Reuss’s plan of The Miniature Bay of Naples.

In 1907, rugby union players were discontented because, despite increased gate revenues, they did not see any financial benefit. Some leading players, including the legendary Dally Messenger, met and formed the NSW Rugby Football League. It based itself on England’s Northern Rugby Football Union, which supported professional players.

The Balmain league team was formed at a meeting in Balmain Town Hall on 23 January 1908, with most of the Balmain rugby union players switching to league. The club chose Birchgrove Oval as its home ground. Nicknamed the Tigers after their orange and black hooped shirts, they were also known as Watersiders and Balmainites.

The league’s first round was played on 20 April 1908 with two games at Birchgrove. South Sydney beat Norths 11-7 and Balmain defeated Western Suburbs 24-0 in front of 3,000 spectators. Despite this success, Balmain finished in sixth place, rivals South Sydney winning the grand final.

Oval today

The 1909 season saw Balmain meet Souths in the grand final again. All revenue from the day was to be held by the promoters and none given to the clubs. In protest, Balmain and South Sydney agreed to boycott the match. Souths reneged on the agreement and turned up, kicked off, scored a try and were awarded the match.

A protest meeting was held in the Balmain Town Hall and considered legal action against the NSW Rugby League contending that the league’s committee broke its own rules by

allowing the proceeds to be given to the promoters. From then on there was a distinct antipathy towards Souths for decades to come. Balmain’s home matches were played at Birchgrove Oval until 1933, with a few years at Wentworth Park (1930), and Drummoyne Oval (1932-33), after which they moved to Leichhardt Oval. They returned to Birchgrove Oval for the 1942 season, then they played at Leichhardt until 1970.

The NSWRL’s centenary celebrations in 2008 were launched at Birchgrove Oval, and a plaque commemorating the event is located near the caretaker’s house.

In 1999, the Balmain Football Club formed a joint venture with Western suburbs. The new team became Wests Tigers who now play nearby at Leichhardt Oval.

Newington College, the new choice in co-education

When you’ve been around for 161 years as Newington College has, proudly providing educational excellence to generations of students, the idea of change to some can feel challenging. To Newington College, however, the decision to become coeducational from 2026 feels natural, forward thinking and necessary.

The Uniting Church school aims to empower students to develop great hearts, inspired minds and strong wings, ready to make a positive contribution to society. To do this, Newington College believes it needs to reflect the world its students will grow into.

Newington already educates girls at its Early Learning Centre (ELC) in Stanmore. Now, girls will join its primary schools in Kindergarten and Year 5 from 2026 at its Wyvern Preparatory K-6 campus situated in Stanmore in Sydney’s inner west, and the Lindfield Preparatory K-6 on Sydney’s north shore.

Two years on in 2028, girls will begin in Years 7 and 11 at the expansive senior campus

in Stanmore. These cohorts will lead the way to Newington becoming fully integrated and co-educational by 2032 and will ensure the College’s continuing place as an inclusive, diverse, future facing school for Preschoolers to Year 12.

Here are just a few of the exceptional opportunities Newington College provides:

Broad & rigorous academic program

Newington College offers multiple internationally recognised qualifications for its diverse student population, all supported by its unique Centre for Critical Thinking and Ethics. From the Cambridge IGCSE to onsite VET courses, the International Baccalaureate and the HSC, students can tailor a learning pathway to suit their needs and interests and benefit from a rich academic enrichment.

Outstanding wellbeing program

Students are at the centre of everything Newington College does. It believes every child should feel known, valued and appreciated for the unique skills and attributes they bring to the school community. There is a comprehensive wellbeing program from K-12 which places students at the centre, incorporating parent evenings, and community partnerships. Working in tandem with a Mentor and Head of House, students in Years 7-12 have several teachers within the College they connect with daily as well as students of all ages in their House locker rooms.

Co-curricular

Newington offers a varied, motivating and comprehensive co-curricular program to ensure every child participates to uncover their passion. With more than 50 co-curricular choices across sport, music, drama, debating, public speaking, Duke of Edinburgh, outdoor education and student clubs such as sustainability and a student news website and newspaper, the choice is great and varied. Newington will remain part of the GPS sports competition, and our girls will compete in the Independent Sporting Association (ISA).

Leadership roles

Student leadership is an essential aspect of the student experience at Newington. There will be considerable opportunities for our

girls to lead both formally and informally as our 2026 Year 5 cohort takes on peer support roles for our ELC and Kindergarten students. Our first female leaders will be trailblazers — the first female students to lead in the College’s history. All students are involved in leadership and development as they move through Newington’s K-12 aligned Learning, Wellbeing and Co-curricular framework. These opportunities help students develop confidence and leadership skills at key points in their growth to maturity.

20 years of local vision care

When you step into George & Matilda Eyecare, you’re not just visiting an optometrist, you’re entering a space with two decades of local history and care. We spoke to Optometrist Barry Meyerson to learn more.

You’ve been in business for 20 years, what got you there? Believe it or not, it was a happy coincidence! We’d just moved to Balmain, falling for the suburb’s charm, when I started seriously considering opening my own practice. I came across a Balmain practice for sale, and it felt like fate. And now, twenty years later, here we still are!

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in 20 years of optometry?

The advancements in multifocal lenses have been impressive. The quality and precision have come so far. And contact lenses are now more comfortable than ever, which has made a world of difference for patients. It’s amazing to see how technology continues to improve the way people experience and enjoy clear vision.

What keeps your customers coming back?

I’d say it’s the genuine care we bring to every appointment. People know we’re here to listen and provide honest advice for their eye and vision needs. We’re more than just a clinic – we’re here to make sure they feel seen and valued.

How has business in Balmain changed over time?

Balmain has always been a wonderful blend of new and familiar faces. We’ve adapted as technology and treatments have advanced, but the sense of community and our commitment to quality eye care hasn’t changed.

Do you still have customers from when you first opened? Yes, and it’s been an incredible journey! I’ve watched kids grow into young adults, families expand, and, sadly, I have also said goodbye to some long-time patients who’ve passed on. Being part of this community for so long has been truly special.

Do you have any funny stories you’d like to share?

Yes! There have been so many memorable moments over the years. One time, a patient came in, genuinely worried that her contact lenses had stopped working. After a bit of investigating, we discovered she’d accidentally put both contact lenses in the same eye!

And the kids are a source of endless entertainment. Some will try to sound out the letters on the eye chart as if they’re real words, which always makes me smile. Balmain has certainly kept us interested over the years.

Surviving the sandwich generation

Being part of a sandwich generation sounds like fun, but it often plays out like you’ve eaten one too many sh*# sandwiches. Nearly one in seven middle-aged adults today — primarily women — find themselves squeezed between the demands of raising their own children, while simultaneously caring for aging parents. For those of us in the thick of it, it’s a perpetual balancing act.

If your life includes hearing incessant requests like ‘Can you drive me to...’, ‘The TV won’t turn on again’ or ‘Stop trying to control me’, then congratulations – you are officially part of the sandwich generation.

The perils of parental independence

Let’s talk about my mum. I adore her and would do anything for her. She raised me, my five siblings and a small army of grandkids, mostly alone as my father passed away when I was seven. She’s a superwoman who sacrificed everything to build a life for us.

Now at 88, she lives alone and insists she’s self-sufficient. Her memory isn’t what it used to be, but her opinions are sharper than ever. She critiques everything, from my clothes and cooking to making declarations like “Dishwashers are for lazy people!” (PS: I’m the only one in the family who uses one).

Every week, I take her to the doctor’s appointments, refill her meds, and hear the same stories on repeat about the noisy neighbours and supermarket prices. Any offer to take her to dinner or invite her over to stay is met with disgust. “Over my dead body, I can look after myself,” she reminds me. It’s as if I’ve just suggested trading her freedom for a leash.

This fierce independence connects her to who she’s always been, so she probably sees accepting any help as defeat. But when I think of the qualities I want my daughter to have, the list usually begins with determination, strength and resilience - the same attributes I admire in my mum.

So, I continue to show up out of pure, unshakable devotion. But sometimes... it’s a lot.

And if I hear the story about her 90-year-old friend’s secret boyfriend one more time, I might just move countries. I know, I know, that sounds awful. I feel guilty saying it. Just as I do when I roll my eyes or ignore her call because I can’t bear to hear about the neighbour’s plants again.

And then, there’s the kids

The next layer of this generational ‘sandwich’ are our kids. Wonderful, demanding, and blissfully unaware of the sacrifices we make for them. They’ve taken over the house, disrupted our lives and turned us into their unpaid chauffeurs.

I estimate about half of my waking hours are spent attending parent events, volunteering at the school, planning birthday parties, coordinating sport activities, playdates and social invitations. All the while living the repetitive grind of trying to get them to finish their homework, force-feeding them healthy, balanced meals and getting them off their screens!

SURVIVING THE SANDWICH

So, how does one survive this balancing act? Here are a few battle-tested strategies:

1. Humour is non-negotiable If you can’t laugh about the daily challenges, the sheer absurdity will get to you. Find humour in the chaos and learn to laugh at the small stuff. Whether it’s mum’s repeated calls about how to fix the TV, your teens’ inability to locate anything in plain sight or your futile efforts to juggle it all.

2. Delegate like a pro Yes, your kids can help their grandmother (or grandfather) with groceries or vacuuming the floor. They can give up a playdate to spend the afternoon with the grandparent/s while being fed on tap. Yes, they’ll protest. No, you don’t need to care. They might call it abuse. I call it life skills in action.

3. Redefine boundaries (and know they’ll be crossed) Creating boundaries with family can feel like setting up a picket fence on a beach - it shifts constantly. You might say, “Devices off at 8pm” and your child will sneakily watch Netflix under the covers. You might say “I don’t want to hear about the neighbours anymore” and your mum will still complain about it the next day. Sometimes, you just have to let it go.

A reminder: it’s okay not to love every part of it

The sandwich generation life is a constant lesson in patience and resilience, and it’s ok to admit it’s not all fulfilling. Some days are a grind of endless demands and stretching yourself across the generational spectrum. But other days offer glimpses of the legacy you’re shaping, the blessings of family and the privilege of growing old.

If only they remembered those early years when we were running on no sleep and all love, doing everything just to keep them happy. But as they enter their tweens, they’re already pushing for their independence, while pressing my every last nerve in the process. »

As much as I resisted it, I see myself turning into my mother. And here I am, getting a crystalclear view of my own future – calling my kids… and hoping they’ll answer.
