Grace with her Dad, Jeff Truman

Mum’s experience as a TV and film director/ producer and my Dad’s work in the industry as a prolific screenwriter and actor.

The project has helped me deal with my grief and stay connected to my Dad, and this has only been made possible by the support of the Balmain community. Local shops have let us use their stores for filming, local businesses have financially sponsored our production and Balmain residents have turned up early in the morning to be extras in the show. We have filmed in a range of Balmain locations and some of our favourites have been the Birchgrove Oval and Jetty, Mort Bay Park, and Darling Street.

All the episodes are available for free to view online. Since the series is a legacy to Dad it seemed only right that the series be made available to anyone anywhere to watch and enjoy. The videos are on our Facebook page, our YouTube channel and website.

Hi, my name is Grace, I’m 18 and I’ve been lucky enough to live in Balmain all my life. The support of this community has seen me through almost everything.

Remembering Dad

When I was 10 my Dad died, suddenly, and it turned my life upside down; from having Dad always present, a person who I relied on and confided in, to never being able to hug him or talk to him again. Soon after Dad died, I started losing memories of him, and I was terrified. When I eventually found the courage to tell my Mum, we knew we had to do something to keep my Dad’s memory alive. So, we made a web series. As unusual as that might sound, it was the best thing Mum and I could think to do, given my

6

We started working on the series on Father’s Day in 2015 and we have been filming the series since 2016. In the series I play Grace, a fictionalised version of me, and in each episode, I encounter a problem. To help me overcome these problems, I imagine my Dad and the story he would tell me, one of his real stories.

Local, award winning web series amazing Grace follows young Grace (played by Grace herself) through daily life without her Dad, reflecting her real experiences of seeking her Dad’s advice in life’s critical moments. This is Grace’s story.

The character of my Dad is played by Ben Wood, and Justine Clarke plays my Mum. The series has developed as I’ve grown up, and we’ve produced 14 episodes so far covering topics such as bullying, appearance and body image, assessments and dealing with Father’s Day without my Dad. The series is ultimately about finding your own way in the world and being able to laugh even when things get tough.

We look forward to once again filming and featuring this beautiful area! See you around the streets and parks then!

Grace and her Mum, Julie Money

Grace with her on-screen Dad played by Ben Wood

To bring these final episodes to life, we are reaching out to you, our community for support. Please get in contact if you or your business would be interested in sponsoring our upcoming episodes. We would be truly grateful for any support you could provide.

Grace Truman

We are currently gearing up to shoot our final three episodes at the end of the year. These will be called “With Grace, amazing Grace series 3”. They are about my experience of graduating high school last year, the struggles I had during my final exams and dealing with the fact that my Dad wasn’t there to see me graduate. I lost myself and found myself again through that time, and I know that there are a lot of other young people going through a similar struggle right now.

We have had hundreds of thousands of views and received awards from around the world including Best International Web Series at Film Festivals in the USA and Europe.

When did you move to Balmain? About 26 years ago.

Anything that has stayed the same over your 26 years? The village feel hasn’t changed and the laid-back attitude is still the same.

What’s changed in the area since you arrived? There is no more Ralph’s Deli.

Do you have a proudest moment? I am grateful for every experience I have had, but working with the mountain gorillas in Rwanda for Gorillas in the Mist with Sigourney Weaver was a big high.

Finally, how do you like your coffee? A large latte thanks served in a big cup.

What do you love most about Balmain? There are always loads of people around to chat to and the shop staff have a great attitude.

One piece of unsolicited advice you would offer locals. To be honest, I don’t think they need my advice – they all know what they are doing. Maybe take an evening ferry ride to anywhere.

Would you consider writing Balmain into the backdrop in any of your future projects? I actually shot on location in Balmain 40 years ago together with Judy Davis for Winter of Our Dreams. I would love to do it again.

Favourite peninsula spot? I have to say Bertoni. And saying that will get me a free coffee.

Where else would you want to live? Balmain has lots of great old houses, it is close to the city, and you have the harbour and ferries on your doorstep.

This spring, as we emerge from the exhaustion of the pandemic, there’s a need to create peaceful, healing environments so earthy tones and pastels are popular.

Latest trends are great but do what pleases you the most. Fashion is fast and fun but you want your home environment to reflect the colours and pieces you love. There’s a fabulous authenticity that comes from marrying old and new, mixing fun new pieces with older treasures.

For those who are well and truly over the rules and are desperate to explore, nothing screams fun quite like neon! Neon shades can breathe life into stale interiors, making them feel innovative and original. Small splashes of colour can make a big impact and give more classic-designed rooms a playful twist.

Styling your home with fresh touches, pops of colour or greenery is a great way to welcome the warmer weather. Here, latestunpickdesignerstoKennedyCindyspeakslocaltothetrends.

COMMUNITY

16

Mayor Darcy Byrne’s opening remarks –“We gather this evening with a new spirit. A spirit of hope and determination. It’s time for Voice, Treaty and Truth” indicates a time for change, a change that’s been a long time coming.

The Uluru Statement from the Heart is the result of over 1,200 community consultations, culminating in an invitation from 250 representatives from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to walk together for a better future. However, there are complexities with the campaign.

Time for change

Councillor for Baludarri (Balmain) ward Kobi Shetty said “It’s the responsibility for all of us to get behind the campaign for an Indigenous voice in parliament. We’d love to see locals put their hands up to help on the campaign, so if that sounds like you, the Inner West Council has committed to train people for just that. You can contact the council to get involved.”

Inner West Council has pledged its support for the Labor Government’s commitment to the Uluru Statement from the Heart. To raise awareness in the lead up to the referendum, Council recently hosted an event with Senator Pat Dodson and Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Linda Burney. Here, guest writer Marc Bennie explains the Statement.

In addition to the greatest ever presence of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across state and federal governments to positively influence outcomes with communities, The Uluru Statement from the Heart campaign can create a fuller expression of Australia’s nationhood in an inclusive and respectful way.

The ask of the Statement is not just about enshrining an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voice in the constitution, but also about treaty (agreement) making with the government; and recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples’ rights, history and culture; and to settle injustices of the past. This process will be implemented through a Makarrata commission; Makarrata being a Yolgnu term for coming together after a struggle which will supervise the process of agreement making and implementation of truth-telling about our nation’s history –seen as a healing process for the nation.

The intent and practicalities of the Uluru Statement from the Heart are not new in many ways, with previous governments having established various bodies over the past half century to represent the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, only to dismantle them and thereby removing their voice to have a say in decision making and policies that impact their everyday lives.

5 White Bay

Thanks to Brendan from Redo Health for sharing his favourite walks with us.

If you don’t have the time or the energy to tackle The Bay Run, this is a great alternative. The views overlooking Cockatoo Island are spectacular and the trail has plenty of steps and Balmain’s very own ‘Heartbreak Hill’. Bridgewater Park is located on the site of the old Balmain Power Station with the heritage Pumphouse a remnant of the area’s industrial roots. It’s worth rolling out of bed before dawn to do this walk – the sunrise over the bay is magical.

Spread across more than 60 hectares, Callan Park is one of the largest parks in the Inner West. Built in 1885 as the Callan Park Hospital for the Insane, it has several exceptional heritage buildings and plenty of open space. Both kids and dogs love to run free here and there’s plenty of space for both to explore. The 100-year-old bamboo forest is a favourite for kids and with many quiet, sealed roads, it’s a great place to learn to ride a bike.

Whether you’re wanting to take a stroll, go for a run or even a cycle – Balmain and Rozelle deliver. Darling shares the best places to explore.

During lockdown, The White Bay Cruise Terminal came alive with families on bikes. Although cruise ships are back, the walk and cycleway remains open. Named after John White, the naval surgeon aboard the first fleet to Australia in 1788, White Bay played an important role for the areas heavy industry. Traces of the industrial past can still be seen today, including The Sunlight Factory at 7 Rosebery Place, originally home to the Lever Brothers soap factory and where the first cake of Sunlight soap was produced.

This trail honours the life of long-term Balmain resident, Labor politician, and patron of the original Defenders of Sydney Harbour Foreshores, Tom Uren. It’s a circuit commencing at Thornton Park near Balmain East Ferry Wharf and takes about two and a half hours to complete. The walk is signposted with wooden markers carved with Uren’s signature Akubra hat. Along the way you can read about the life of Tom Uren and learn about Balmain’s Aboriginal history.

3 Tom Uren Trail

2 Callan Park

If you’re after an easy stroll, stick to the flat foreshore and enjoy the spectacular Harbour Bridge views. If you’d like to work those legs, tackle the many stairs at Ballast Point Park. One of the park’s most interesting features is the way the site’s history has been brought to life through design, art, and poetry. Tank 101 symbolises the site’s working history whilst Delicate Balance represents the use of sandstone from the site as ballast for European ships.

“To say I was disappointed is an understatement”, says Lara. “My art is popular with international buyers (they love everything Australian) and to be invited back to Asia and the US was a great honour.”

Lara also refurbished her Beattie Street gallery and developed a new line of rugs for Designer Rugs Australia.

“I’m often encouraged to create more works like this one or that because that’s what most people like – that’s what sells. I know the person is trying to help, but comments like these leave me perplexed. In my mind I’m thinking, don’t you get it? It’s not about what’s selling, it’s about the creative process. I love painting, it’s like meditation to me.”

Being an artist can be a very vulnerable path. You make something deeply personal and then present it to the world with an open heart, not knowing how it’ll be received. This vulnerability doesn’t faze local artist Lara Scolari.

“It takes me a long time to dream up an idea and transform it into a piece of art. When I finally get to share it with the world, I’m just excited. I don’t worry if someone likes it or not, I just let go and the magic happens.”

And the magic happened in 2014 after a sellout solo exhibition at the Dank Street Gallery in Waterloo. Since then, Lara has exhibited at more than 75 group and solo shows both in Australia and overseas. After rave reviews at the Affordable Art Fairs in Singapore and Hong Kong and The Other Art Fair in Los Angeles, Lara was set to return in 2020. But then our borders closed.

Lara Scolari paints because she has an innate need to do so — if her work sells, that’s a bonus. Darling speaks to the artist who still pinches herself when someone buys one of her pieces.

Like most of us, after two years at home, Lara is looking forward to heading overseas. “Covid gave me a unique opportunity to bunker down and create. I’ve shared these new works with the local community and I’m now ready to share it with the world.”

Every few minutes, trams clattered by in both directions, with brazen young paper boys jumping on and off the moving cars, crying out in a nasal voice “payp’rr, payp’rr” and dispensing newspapers from the pile held under one arm and with the other, collecting money and making change from a leather pouch strapped around their waist. While there were very few cars or trucks along Darling Street, noisy street vendors were common, peddling their goods from horse-drawn carts or hand barrows, attracting customers with street cries for their various specialized items and services – “Bottle-O, bottles and rags, Bottle-O”, “Clothes poles, clothes poles!” and a cry very popular with the housewives – “Rabbit-O, cooked stuffed rabbits, Rabbit O!”

Adding to the chorus of calls on Darling Street, was the Anchor’s resident hawker, which was in fact a green parrot, stationed outside the salon in a large cage. Dad had trained the popular bird to repeatedly screech “Haircut, Sixpence! Shave, Three pence!”

[...] The most popular feature of the Anchor, however, was not the barbering or the gifts, but Dad’s other business – his lending library. Housed in a partitioned area at the back of the barber shop, was a small collection of books which included volumes of Macaulay’s History, The Complete Works of Benjamin Disraeli, and The Novels of Lord Lytton, all undoubtedly purchased as a lot by my father at an auction.

Maureen’s family immigrated from Ireland in 1925 to New Zealand and then on to Australia, setting up home in Balmain in 1930, and eventually growing their brood to 10 children all with musical talents. This abridged chapter, “The Anchor Hairdressing Salon” from the memoir, took place during The Depression and gives us a taste of days gone by in Balmain where community spirit, friendship and industry were alive and well as it is today... not to mention a drink from the London Hotel.

220 Darling Street was a free-standing, twostorey terrace house in which we lived and many of us had been born. The centre of activity was the kitchen which was furnished with a wood-burning stove, a sink, hanging mesh food keepers and a large rectangular wooden table with benches on either side where we had all of our meals, where homework was done and, when padded with an old blanket, doubled as an ironing board. Also on the first floor was the living room [...] which led through to our barber shop, the Anchor Hairdressing Salon. If the kitchen was the hub of activity for our family, the Anchor was certainly a hub of activity for much of FacingBalmain.Darling

Street, the main thoroughfare of Balmain, the salon was situated well for business in an area bustling with activity. Within a short distance was the large ColgatePalmolive soap factory, the Poole and Steel ship works, three ferry wharves and the

HISTORY

Gaelic was not a common written language in Australia and while many Irish people may have spoken the ancient Celtic tongue, there were very few who read it. An attempt was made by the authorities to find a translator. The search was unsuccessful, and even if there was someone who could translate Gaelic, no self-respecting Irish person would have ever agreed to be employed in such a fashion.

31Spring 2022

On Saturdays, the Anchor was a social centre for many local men, who were off work that day and would evade their share of household chores by insisting to their wives that they need a haircut or shave. But of course barbering wasn’t the main attraction. Saturday was the most important day for horse racing and consequently, a particularly busy one for the lending library. Clutching their Lord Lytton novels, the men would hover around the radio in the smoke-filled Anchor, engrossed by the announcer’s incessant monologue of race results from tracks around the country, and as this was thirsty work, they took turns carrying a billy can up the street to the London Hotel to be filled and refilled.

The O’Carroll family at their Darling Street home

The lending library was enjoying a burgeoning patronage when my father fell victim to an informer. It was suspected that the woman who ran the comic book shop a few doors away didn’t appreciate the competition, and one day two policemen came into the Anchor – “We’re sorry Jack, but we have to take in your account books.” They probably were sorry too, also being patrons of the lending library. My father didn’t say anything but looking unconcerned, beamed one of his cheeky grins and proudly handed over his ledgers. All of his records had been written in Gaelic.

They were dry and unreadable Victorian works, but they weren’t meant to be read. One of dad’s sidelines was bookmaking. He wasn’t binding more volumes for the library but taking bets on the horse races. Bookmaking was an illegal activity, but this didn’t stop many shopkeepers from engaging in it, and my father enjoyed maintaining a unique system to disguise the betting; a borrowed book would be returned with the bet and money placed inside, and another book would be checked out ready for the next bet.

Without the required evidence, the case was dropped and my father resumed his concerns at the Anchor, congratulated by all the eager literary members of his lending library.

Callan Park has been enjoyed by locals for years, but the rules of its use have been murky, especially in regard to off-leash dog areas. Greater Sydney Parklands who manage the park have released the final Companion Animal Management Plan in which 20 hectares of the park are off-leash, making Callan Park one of Sydney’s largest off-leash parks.

“CPDL’s approach has always been that the park is large enough to cater to the needs of all park users. Given that the Inner West Council area has a high rate of dog ownership, which increased considerably during the COVID pandemic, it was important for dog owners to be able to exercise and socialise their dogs off-leash over a sizeable area. This is not just for the dog’s wellbeing, but also for the owner’s mental and physical health too”, said Louisa.

The win for the dogs came after 18 months of community consultation. Integral to the campaign has been local advocate and author Louisa Larkin who formed Callan Park Dog Lovers (CPDL) in 2020 when the NSW Dept of Planning made their Landscape Structure Plan for Callan Park public. Louisa said, “We spoke up for dog owners and they listened. We thank them for the ensuing community engagement program.”

COMMUNITY

Louisa’s dog Pickles, a beautiful Golden Retriever, became the mascot for the Callan Park Dog Lovers group. Pickles sadly passed away in July 2022 at twelve years of age. He served the Balmain/Rozelle dog-owning community by championing the campaign for off-leash areas in Callan Park and was so well known amongst the Inner West community, that hundreds turned up to his memorial. Pickles was also the inspiration for three of Louisa’s novels, which she writes as Louisa Bennet.

The final Companion Animal Management Plan is a good outcome for all park users. It demonstrates the power of community action and how a community consultation process has enabled both dog owners and non-dog owners to have their say.

Jamie Parker, our local State MP was a big advocate during the campaign. Jamie said “This is an important first step to making sure all kinds of users of Callan Park have some clarity. It strikes a balance that allows all the wonderful, varied uses of Callan Park –everything from dog walking, kids play, rest and relaxation to co-exist.”

Thanks to the Inner West Council’s Perfect Match street art program, there are beautiful artworks scattered across the peninsula. Head down to Birchgrove, stop by 12 Dock Road and look at Silvereye by local artist Thomas Jackson perched on a branch of Willow Bottlebrush. The artist was inspired by the home’s beautiful garden in which trees and wildlife are in abundance and are now reflected permanently in the street artwork.

at 36 Cove Street is an artwork by Kelly Wallwork known as Early Birchgrove/Cockatoo Island Memories. The street artwork tells the story of Cockatoo Island which harboured convicts that came from a long history of shipbuilders, once visible from this site. A coal mine operated close to this spot from the late 1800’s, with a deep shaft of approximately 800 metres. Neighbours now value the benefits of a quieter time in Birchgrove but appreciate the history of days gone by.

The ‘Great Resignation’ is upon us, what can businesses and leaders in particular, do to prepare themselves? Employees will provide their ongoing commitment to organisations that invest in them and their development. Businesses and leaders who deeply understand their people and tailor this investment to the individual will be the most successful.

How do you foster a cohesive workplace when some colleagues are in the office and others work from home? Leaders now need to be much more considered in how they use team sessions and put more consideration and time into designing team development workshops.

How do organisations find or develop good leaders? Organisations will only find good leaders when their evaluation process is designed to value the important leadership traits I mentioned. Developing good leaders requires an ongoing investment and commitment to regularly assess leader performance. The use of 360’s helps in both the assessment and development of leaders.

How does Decision Health help leaders and teams?

Many of us are still working remotely, how has this impacted on team culture? Hybrid work has reduced the frequency of opportunities for the many individual relationships to develop or be maintained across teams.

Brene Brown – I believe she’s done more than anyone else to help us understand the modern view of leadership, and the most important attribute is the willingness to show vulnerability.

DECISION HEALTH

Finally, who is someone that inspires you?

What makes a good leader? And how do you build a great team when half of them work from home? Darling sits down with Adrian Searle, Leadership Coach to learn more.

Good leaders demonstrate good judgement by regularly making wise, considered decisions. And all good leaders have a well-developed level of self-awareness.

Through observation and the use of psychometric profiling we help leaders and teams see their current reality more accurately. We then support them through individual coaching or workshops to develop them into the leaders and teams they wish to become.

over Sydney. Many clients appreciate the opportunity to get away from their four walls and to come to our spaces in the Sunlight Factory for workshops or coaching.

To continually be open to the learning opportunities around you and invest in yourself. We all need to keep growing and developing. This could include listening to podcasts, watching Ted Talks or regularly picking up a book that inspires you.

You’ve been in business for 18 years, what’s one piece of advice you can offer other local businesses?

We’ve been home with our dogs for two years and there’s no surprise they have become somewhat attached to us. Now that we’re back in the office, our dogs must adjust to a new way of living. Local dog trainer Pushpa knows how separation anxiety can cause major problems in any household.

Separation anxiety can occur when a dog has never been shown how to be on its own without the need for constant attention or for the owner to be nearby. Many households have had the joy of getting a new pet over the past couple of years, and it’s been great in so many ways. Working from home means we’ve been spending more time with our pets.
