commentary As I write this commentary on a mid-August Sunday afternoon, it is raining literally inches per hour!

What a wonderful time to be hunkered down in the comfort of my home, coffee by my side, reflecting on the blessings of the last few months.

I’ve had the great pleasure of connecting with so many business owners in the area. Some of them are launching new ventures to serve our community, while others have been around for awhile but decided to make the wise decision to join (or re-join) the Chamber. It’s exciting to see the growth we are experiencing and the optimism that results as more and more businesses continue to succeed.

When it comes to looking ahead, I see a very bright future. After 18 long months, the City of Gulf Breeze shared and approved its 50 year plan. Wow, how fortunate we are to live in such a forward thinking city, one that truly cares about maintaining and improving the quality of life we enjoy for generations to come. I only hope I’m able to see it come to fruition!

In the very immediate future I’m most excited about the Gulf Breeze Business and Family Expo in September. This annual event, which showcases our local businesses and restaurants, is always a highlight, but this year’s event is shaping up to be the best Expo ever! The Business Development Committee has done a masterful job pulling it together and they are expecting record attendance.

The icing on the cake is that it will be held in the brand new Gulf Breeze Community Center, which by all accounts is a “world class facility.” Don’t miss it!

The Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce continues to remain active serving our business community and I am honored to be a part of this organization. I encourage you to give us a call or stop by if we can be of any assistance.

Fall—my all time favorite time of the year. While the beach will shift into a slower mode, things are beginning to pop in our communities. Our leaves may not explode into color or drop as early as northern climates, but many other fall activities do have their own colorful, gusty impact on our area businesses.

School is back in session! Yellow buses beep. Bells ring. Screams peal from playgrounds and PE classes. Marching band music catches the breeze. Such an alive time of year! In this edition of Gulf Breeze Magazine we look at how Gulf Breeze schools are meeting the demand for strong STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) course work in our curriculum. Readers will also meet Jeff Baugus, Santa Rosa County’s 2013 Teacher of the Year, who has a new take on teaching math.

Go team! Go! Football and soccer take over both of Gulf Breeze’s recreational facilities— not to mention our whole social schedule. These sports are the energy that rocks the panhandle through the fall and early winter on Friday nights, all day Saturday, and then again on Sunday afternoon. Team colors become most fans’ wardrobe of choice. Last issue we learned about the city’s new Community Center. This issue read about Tiger Point Recreation Facility’s community center that should be completed this fall.

And the newest big fall event is the Gulf Breeze Business and Family Expo! Each year Gulf Breeze gives area businesses an opportunity to showcase their products and services to area residents. This year’s Expo on Friday, September 20 and Saturday, September 21 will be bigger and better than ever. Read all about it.

businessbriefs After School Program for Middle Schoolers St. Ann Catholic Church sponsors an after school program for middle school students (6 – 8th grade) from 1:30 – 3:30 every Wednesday and Friday during the school year. Activities consist of short life skills presentations and plenty of gym time. In order to operate a safe and secure program, we need adult chaperones. Northwest Florida Blood Center Has a New Name

On January 27, 2012 three of Florida’s independent, not-for-profit blood centers, Community Blood Centers of Florida, Inc. (CBCF), Florida’s Blood Centers, Inc. (FBC) and Florida Blood Services, Inc. (FBS) came together in a merger of equals and OneBlood, Inc. was established. More than a year of collaboration and extensive planning among the three organizations led to the creation of OneBlood—an innovative, forward-thinking blood center that we envision leading the industry in providing safe, available and affordable blood to our hospital partners and their patients. As a community asset, the OneBlood name is a constant reminder of the collective power we share to save another person’s life. The service area of OneBlood includes the Tampa Bay area, South and Southeast Florida, the Orlando-metro area and surrounding Central Florida counties, parts of Southwest Florida, Pensacola and Tallahassee and some parts of Southern Georgia and Alabama. OneBlood currently serves more than 200 hospitals.

New Organization Brings Local Manufacturers Together Recognizing the high value-added manufacturing industry, the Northwest Florida Manufacturers Council has been formed to strengthen the economic competitiveness of the region’s manufacturers by acting as a single voice to address common interests. Manufacturing currently generates 14,518 direct jobs and an additional 17,063 indirect jobs in the 12-county region, and is expected to grow at a higher rate in northwest Florida than in any other region in the state.

The Council is an association for manufacturers of all sizes and sub-clusters who are located or have a presence in the

Beautification Projects Need Your Help The United Peninsula Association is busy fulfilling its commitment to beautify Gulf Breeze and on through to Navarre. They have completed the first phases of this largescale landscaping project along Highway 98.

They have been able to tap into FDOT and other grants to cover the cost of cleaning up the areas, installing sprinklers as needed, and purchasing grass, trees, and shrubbery. Now they need you! Gulf Power Economic Symposium It is time once again for Gulf Power’s annual Economic Symposium in Sandestin. This year’s theme is “Building the Future.” The event will be held at Sandestin Village at Baytowne Wharf on Monday, Sept. 29 through Tuesday, Oct. 1. Each year Gulf Power draws together some of the top thinkers and visionaries in business and development to share with local governmental and business leaders from all over northwest Florida. Florida Master Naturalist Program Coastal Systems Training Join Escambia and Santa Rosa County Extension agents to learn more about Florida’s natural resources! The Florida Master Naturalist Program is a hands-on learning experience for adults. The FMNP both informs and prepares individuals to share information about Florida’s natural world and environmental history. Classes will be held most Wednesdays beginning September 18 through November 20 from 9 am until 2 pm.

The $225 registration fee includes field trips, classroom training and materials. The Coastal Systems Module includes classroom instruction, field trips, and practical interpretive experiences related to the general ecology, habitats, vegetation types, wildlife, and conservation issues of coastal systems in Florida. Field trips will include the Navarre Beach Marine Science Station, Pensacola Beach, Shoreline Park South, Project Greenshores and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab. Annual International Coastal Cleanup Gulf Islands National Seashore Superintendent Dan Brown announced the upcoming annual International Coastal Cleanup scheduled for Saturday, Sept.21, from 8 am to 12 noon. Coordinated by the Ocean Conservancy, the International Coastal Cleanup is a major worldwide event “Our goal isn’t just to clean the beaches, it is also to educate people about keeping the beaches clean in the first place,” said Superintendent Brown. “Some pieces of debris can outlive the oldest fish in the sea.”

Coastal Cleanup locations at the seashore include: Santa Rosa Area - meet at Opal Beach, Gulf side, Perdido Key Area - meet at Johnson Beach picnic area by the bulletin board located .5 miles east of State Road 292, and Fort Pickens Area - meet at Langdon Beach, Gulf side. Entrance fees will be waived for volunteers assisting with the coastal cleanup. Coastal cleanup volunteers are advised to wear closed-toe shoes, gloves, sunscreen and hats and to bring water to stay hydrated. Families, individuals, businesses, and community groups can choose their favorite location to register, receive trash bags, data cards and information. chambernews Breakfast of Champions: Honoring True Champions Come celebrate all that is great about football season at the Chamber’s annual Breakfast of Champions on Thursday, Sept. 12 at 7 am in the first floor conference room of the Andrews Performance and Research Pavilion. This year our theme takes a twist as we honor our nation’s true champions by learning about the Eagle Fund at the Andrews Institute. The Eagle Fund is a nonprofit resource that funds the rehabilitation of wounded servicemen and women who receive the same high standard of rehab as national athletes. Through the generous donations of business and individuals like ourselves, 211 Special Opps heroes have been able to return to their posts. Come hear the inspiring story. Dress in your team colors – local, college, pros – and enjoy the fun. Use your team spirit to raise money for the Eagle Fund. The challenge is out to all sports fans – let’s see which team/organization can donate the most money to support the rehabilitation of our country’s heroes!

Healthcare Reform: What it means for your business The Chamber will host this free seminar on Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 11:30 am – 1 pm. Bring your bag lunch and come learn. We will focus on the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Our guest speaker, Ted Kircharr, is a Vice President and the COO of Landrum Professional. He is an expert on healthcare reform and has written the book The Busy Business Owners Guide to Health Care Reform: What You Need to Know, which is available for the Kindle and in paperback from Amazon.com.

Kircharr will outline the key provisions of the law as well as what the reforms were intended to do. “It is my intent to provide a high-level overview of health care reform with the pertinent details boiled down to the essential facts. In layman’s terms I will tell you what you need to know in order to assist you in drafting your health care reform to-do list,” says Mr. Kirchharr.

Chamber 101 Video: Using your Member Only Login If you are a member of the Gulf Breeze Area Chamber, you have personal control of your member information on the Chamber’s website. Chamber staff encourages members to update their profiles regularly, especially if they are having special sales, new promotions, or adding new products. Often members have been confused at how to do this. The Chamber has created a short video that gives step by step instructions on how to log in and utilize all the many “backdoor” tools that are available to its members. Gulf Breeze Business & Family Expo The Place to Be September 20 and 21

The Gulf Breeze Area Chamber,

the City of Gulf Breeze, and Highpointe Hotel Corporation are once again hosting the 2013 annual Gulf Breeze Business & Family Expo on Friday, Sept. 20 and Saturday, Sept. 21 – a great event for the whole family. The Chamber and City are grateful to all the sponsors of this exciting business showcase.

First, the Community Center facility is totally new. The old building has had a major facelift and the new addition is spacious and up-to-date. Starting in the bright, modern lobby and going right through to the farthest gym, guests will be amazed at the open and welcoming atmosphere of the new Center. A larger gymnasium, restrooms with showers, a conference room and kitchen as well as state of the art exercise venues are some of the new amenities.

With all this additional space, Expo is able to spread its wings and expand. The added resources make it possible to house 95 percent of the event inside the facility. The new gym will be the site of the main exhibition hall for the Business Expo with a few exhibitors greeting visitors in the hallway. With natural light coming in from large windows near the ceiling and a booth plan redesign, this showcase will be both exhibitor and visitor friendly. The added floor space will also allow for a nice stage for entertainment throughout the event on Saturday which will include music, a fashion show, dance and more. The exercise venues will be used for fitness and dance demos. If you have ever wondered what Jazzercise, Pilates, martial arts and Zumba are like, come watch demo classes all day Saturday. The roomy conference room will be busy as well with seminars about men’s and women’s health issues, social media marketing advice, and visits by local celebrities like Kazoo from the Blue Wahoos. Ken Griffin Landscaping room as well as the beautiful back porch area will house a variety of children’s activities provided by local non-profit agencies. These will include face painting, coloring, dunking booth, cupcake walk, snow cones and so much more. We will even have a petting zoo and the Pensacola Furricanes located out on the grass in front of the Center. Truly the Gulf Breeze Expo is fun for the whole family!

Also new to Expo this year are the extended hours. On Friday evening, Expo will be open from 5 to 8 pm and Saturday it will run from 9 am to 4 pm. This gives business vendors 10 hours to highlight their product and services to visitors of all ages, up from seven hours in previous years.

The Gulf Breeze Business and Family Expo will kick off Friday night, (September 20th) with its popular Taste of Gulf Breeze from 5–8 pm. The event will be quite merry as visitors enjoy delicious bite size appetizers, beverages, and desserts provided by 18 food and beverage vendors located throughout the venue. Expo Exhibitors will be handing out information while guests stroll about while enjoying jazz and tropical music provided by “Mixture and the Band.” Guests will also be delighted with a cocktail dress/evening attire fashion show hosted by Heather Marie’s Closet. Taste of Gulf Breeze is open to the public. (Must be at least 21 years old to attend).

The Gulf Breeze High School Band and the Civil Air Patrol will start Expo off with a bang at 9 am Saturday morning and the energy won’t decrease until we close the doors at 4. Whether it is learning about all the great products and services presented in the business exhibition, enjoying the demos and entertainment, attending a seminar, or laughing with the kids, everyone will be glad they attended the Gulf Breeze Business & Family Expo. If all that wasn’t enough, visitors and exhibitors alike will be able to grab a bite to eat or drink at the concession stand or try their hand at a scavenger hunt with an approximate $1,500 prize.

Area Students Soar to STEM Success

In a constantly advancing global economy, the need for technologically skilled workers is ever present.

Schools at all levels in Santa Rosa County and Gulf Breeze have made a focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by implementing programs that encourage student progress in these areas, as well as setting up specialty programs to help students advance even further in STEM-related fields.

launched the balloon. Barnes followed the GPS tracker and picked it up in Climax, Ga. that evening, and the following day students were able to look over the data and photos collected by the balloon.

Barnes says that it’s necessary for teachers to be just as interested and open to learning more about STEM-related subjects along with students, as most professions include some aspects of these subjects.

“I would not have guessed that I’d incorporate what most would see as a science project into my pre-algebra class, but I did and it was a fabulous experience,” she says. “Students will not be fully successful if they are not pulling from a variety of experiences.”

Other teachers are also finding innovative ways to ignite a passion, or at least interest in their respective fields. Algebra I teacher Jeffery Baugus, also at Woodlawn Beach Middle, has bolstered his in-class instruction with the use of technology, media, and other amenities to help students achieve success in his class. Students log on to a class video blog after school instead of doing repetitive homework and other extracurricular tools including music and games further cement his lessons in students’ minds.

At the high school level, students at Gulf Breeze High School are offered yet more opportunities to expand their STEM skills and even get a head start on a future career in a STEM-related field in career academies. GBHS houses both a Medical & Health Professions Academy and the GBHS Academy for Multimedia Design & Technology. Heading the latter multiple award-winning program is Heather Renfroe, who is the only Adobe-certified instructor in the area.

In the small, personalized learning community of the Academy for Multimedia Design & Technology, students learn specialized skills that will prepare them for a career or further education in a variety of technological media.

“Students gain not only real-world experiences from learning Industry Standard software, but they also have the opportunity to express their creativity and knowledge using digital media,” Renfroe says.

Students also get a chance to test for industry certifications and those that pass those exams are eligible to receive college credit at Florida colleges and universities. Renfore says these

Area schools at all levels have been adapting to the changing needs of the workforce on both a local and global level.

Gulf Breeze students consistently score well above state averages on all standardized examinations in math and science. At the higher level, Gulf Breeze High School builds on the foundation set at the lower grades with a rigorous curriculum aimed at challenging all students to achieve their fullest potential. A visionary in education, GBHS hosts career academies that offer students small, personalized learning settings focused on given career tracks that allow students to start training for specialized careers while still in grade school.

At Woodlawn Beach Middle School many teachers are very much up to the challenge of getting kids excited about STEM-related curriculum. Eighth grade math teacher Kelly Barnes says she utilizes group work and peer learning strategies in class to keep the students interested. Once students are able to explain material to each other, she knows they truly understand the concepts she’s teaching.

“I also use many activities that apply to ‘real life’ and some whimsical activities like the rematch of the tortoise and the hare,” she says. “Changing the pace from drill and practice to meaningful projects and throwing in some silly things along the way seems to make math more fun for the students and me.”

Another recent activity she worked on with students utilized a ACELL Grant Barnes was awarded from the National Defense Industrial Association to build and launch a suborbital photography weather balloon. Students applied to be on the build team and she guided them as they built the box with two cameras, one set for video and one with an interval timer, a GPS tracking device and a thermocoupler data logger. On February 26, 2012, they prepared and

certifications make them more marketable and give them an edge over peers.

Renfroe agrees that enthusiasm—both her own and her students’—has propelled the program to success. She is passionate about her subject matter as well as the resulting opportunities it affords her classes. Renfroe stays updated by attending District in-service activities and being a member of the Next Generation Learning Community (NGLC), hosted

by Workforce Esca-Rosa. NGLC hosts meetings several times a year with local business and industry leaders in the area which offer insight to what skills employers are looking for in job candidates.

Students in the academy gain insight into advanced skills and media of the constantly progressing tech industry.

“This year, level three students will be creating apps for mobile devices and will have the opportunity to test them on iPads and Android devices in the classroom,” Renfroe says.

Also in Santa Rosa County, the Locklin Tech Center is working to provide technical and supplemental training and academic education to students, businesses, industries, manufacturers, and other citizens. The center offers a wide range of programs that give hands-on training to students.

Programs include electricity, building construction technology, practical nursing, computer systems and IT, printing and graphic communications and more.

Along with regular first time students, businesses can utilize the programs at Locklin for continuing education in their industry. Students at Locklin Tech can also earn industry certifications that will help to further their career options and the school itself is certified by the Council on Occupational Education and undergoes a thorough certification process every five years.

Grade schools aren’t the only places where a focus on STEM-related learning is thriving. College students can attend Pensacola State College South Santa Rosa Center right on Gulf Breeze Parkway, a brand new facility that is part of Pensacola State College’s growing presence. The building is fitted with state of the art technology and offers classes and programs for both college students and high school students who are dual enrolled.

Adding to the three full-service campuses and its Downtown Center, Pensacola State College currently serves students from Escambia and Santa Rosa

counties in Florida and southern Alabama. The South Santa Rosa Center helps the college better serve one of Florida’s fastest-growing counties. The center boasts laboratories equipped for the sciences like biology, chemistry and physics, as well as computer courses.

As the needs of the local and global workforce move forward in a technologically advanced age, the emphasis on STEM learning cannot be underestimated. With local schools, organizations and individual teachers using creative ideas and time-tested approaches to further encourage students to absorb these areas, Gulf Breeze and Santa Rosa County will no doubt produce a robust next generation of skilled members of these burgeoning industries. Do you realize

there is an exciting shift taking place in the city and the unincorporated area of Gulf Breeze? By October 2013 both areas will have beautifully appointed, multi-purpose community centers. While the former South Santa Rosa Recreation Center often served as a community center, it was mostly a recreational facility. In the unincorporated area, Tiger Point Golf Club and Gulf Breeze United Methodist Church’s Community Life Center staff and facility have both been true custodians of a community spirit by hosting many meetings for the Tiger Point and Midway communities. But now, finally, both ends of Gulf Breeze will have a place where groups, clubs, businesses, and individuals can truly call “home,” where they can publicly gather and create “community.” We have arrived!

Now let’s take a look at the new Tiger Point Community Center, which is under construction at Tiger Point Park just beyond Walmart and Lowe’s on Gulf Breeze Parkway.

The Tiger Point Community Center is at Tiger Point Park, a County-owned facility.

But it was a collaborative effort on the part of many people that made this project possible. The need for a community center in south Santa Rosa County was identified by the District 5 Recreational Advisory Committee in 2008. This committee was made up of residents from throughout Gulf Breeze.

Commissioner Lane Lynchard comments, “This project would not have been able to move forward without the help of

many active residents. I have worked with the United Peninsula Association and the Tiger Point Sports Association for the past several years to bring the project forward.”

The Community Center is Phase Two of a larger plan to improve the facilities at Tiger Point Park.

STOA Architects designed both phases of the plan with the goal of creating very user friendly amenities for area residents and the athletes and their families who spend many hours at the Park. Phase One is up and running. It includes 1,000 square feet of new space to replace the old concession and restroom facilities. Customers will stay cool and dry thanks to a metal canopy above the service window and most importantly, park users of all abilities will be able to use the new air-conditioned ADA-compliant restrooms. Phase Two, the Community Center, will be

completed in October of this year. The Community Center houses a 3,500 square foot multi-purpose space. This space has state-of-the-art digital broadcasting technology and an adjacent warming kitchen. The building also includes a small office, conference space, and 1,300 square feet of outdoor shaded play area for families with small children.

When complete, the Tiger Point Community Center will comprise over 10,000 square feet of new interior and exterior space for use by the local community.

There is a broad vision for the Tiger Point Community Center.

The Center provides excellent facilities for the athletic programs at Tiger Point Park and permanent office space for Tiger Point Sports Association which oversees those programs. It is also designed to provide a facility where community groups, organizations and

individuals can hold meetings. And with the installation of audio/visual technology to record and broadcast public meetings, the Santa Rosa County Board of Commissioners can now hold Commission meetings in the south end of the County. Justin Labrato with Tiger Point Sports Association shared his vision of the new Center. “The new community center will be the centerpiece of the park where families can eat at the new concession stand, parents with young children can get out of the sun and kids can hang out with friends between practices or games out of the weather. It will also be the perfect location for parents and grandparents to sit in the shade and watch their family members play T-ball behind the community center. We are also very excited about the new concession stands and bathrooms which replace

the older rundown bathrooms. This building will also be the perfect location for Gulf Breeze and Navarre Home Owners Association meetings in the future, which will bring more exposure to our programs.”

Tiger Point Park is totally run by volunteers.

The Park consists of a ¾ of a mile long walking trail, two tennis courts, two basketball courts, two playgrounds, nine baseball/softball fields, a football/multi-use field and six soccer fields. Park hours are from 8 am–10 pm. Volunteers do everything from preparing the fields for games to coaching and managing the sports programs. Tiger Point Sports Association started in 2001 to run the various sports programs offered at the park which include Spring Soccer, Baseball, T-ball and Softball and Fall

Football, Cheer, Soccer and Baseball for children of every skill level. There are 700 families that are members of Tiger Point Sports Association with about 1,300 athletes and coaches.

With the completion of the Tiger Point Community Center, all of Gulf Breeze will have taken a huge step forward in being an excellent community to live, work, and play in.

Through the continuing efforts of the Gulf Breeze Sports Association at the new Gulf Breeze Community Center and the Tiger Point Sports Association at the new Tiger Point Community Center, children of all ages will continue to grow into healthy, strong children of character through these excellent sports programs. And we as citizens will grow together in community as we meet with each other in these beautiful facilities.

Jeff Baugus

Making math fun may seem more impossible than solving the Riemann hypothesis, but one teacher in Gulf Breeze is working to make it a reality, much to the joy and relief of middle-schoolers everywhere.

Teaching since 2008, Jeffery Baugus has been invested in enriching children’s lives for much longer. Before he started making math fun for area youngsters, he helped area youth with church summer construction projects, assisted those wanting to earn their GED through the federal YouthBuild USA program, and volunteered in a variety of different ministries. During this time, he discovered that he had a knack for connecting with students and felt comfortable helping them learn and develop.

“I’ve always wanted the best for young people, and after funding was cut for YouthBuild, I looked elsewhere for opportunities to make a difference,” said Baugus, who currently teaches at Woodlawn Beach Middle School.

He began teaching math to middle-schoolers and quickly discovered that some traditional forms of teaching were not resonating with the students. According to Baugus, they were unable to retain the information after class let out.

“About halfway through the semester, grades were starting to slip, 26

so I took a day to converse with them and discover what the problem was,” said Baugus. “Many of them said that they understood the mathematic principles in the lesson, but forgot about much of them before doing their homework that night.”

It is from these open dialogues that Baugus fosters that many of his ideas have come to fruition. Instead of homework, Baugus’s students go home and log time on a video blog, which rehearses the lessons they learn in class and allows class time to be focused on working on problems and other real-life applications.

During a trip to the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, Baugus learned of the Ron Clark method, which involves teaching with the inclusion of technology, media, and other amenities in every classroom. Lessons ranging from history to science all involve some sort of extracurricular learning tools, be it music or games. This trip inspired Baugus to include many of these themes into his own lessons, including music, in order to increase attentiveness and understanding of the lessons.

“I’ve written a version of ‘Gangham Style’ called ‘Flip That Sign,’ and it deals with inequalities,” said Baugus. “’Suit and Tie’ by Justin Timberlake is now ‘X and Y.’ It really helps the kids understand the mathematic terms and equations.”

The next song Baugus is working on is a mathematic version of “Thrift Shop,” and it will deal with exponents.

The dialogues that Baugus hosts with his students have given way to other great ideas, too, like occasionally incorporating black lights into the learning periods and an expansion of his video blog website, which is currently being adopted on a county-wide level.

“It’s my belief that you can’t reach your full potential as a teacher unless you’re open to dialogue and bettering yourself,” said Baugus. “I hand out surveys once a semester, and my students and I will talk for 15 or 20 minutes every now and then about what can be improved, what is or isn’t working, etc.

Feedback leads to a better product, and I believe that applies in teaching as well.”

Baugus’s blogs can be viewed internationally, as well, so vacationing students can stay up to date on homework and keep their mind aware of the math that is all around them.

“Everyone uses math at some point during the day,” said Baugus. “It might just be addition or subtraction, but mathematic concepts and complexities can be seen all around us.”

It is no surprise that Baugus has received numerous awards for his unique, relatable method of teaching, continuing Gulf Breeze’s tradition of outstanding schools and teachers.

Among his distinctions are Santa Rosa County Teacher of the Year for 2013, Hurlburt Air Force Association’s Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2010, and Santa Rosa County Council of Teachers of Mathematics Middle School Teacher of the Year for 2009.

Baugus currently lives in Gulf Breeze with his wife and three children. He said that he is proud to call the area home and, after having lived elsewhere, wants to stay here.

“I love the community environment, and the schools obviously,” said Baugus. “People who visit don’t want to leave, and I’m blessed to be able to actually be at home here. It’s a great place to raise kids.”

As for the school system, Baugus said that he appreciates the recognition that teachers get in the Santa Rosa County School District.

“They really work to highlight the teachers and equip them to serve their students,” said Baugus. “I hate summer time; I’d rather sit in my classroom, developing ideas that will enrich my students. The district definitely supports that and champions causes that further education and enrich the process.” GB Fall/2013/Gulf Breeze Magazine
