In an exclusive interview, Ria shares her football journey, reflections on life beyond the game, her driving force, cherished moments, and future career plans. She answers 24 questions—one for each number on her kit.

Were the opportunities for girls’ football limited, or did you have to play boys’ football? Who were you playing for at the time you started to get interest from professional clubs?

“Initially, I played in boys’ teams since there weren’t any girls’ teams in my area. At seven, Brighton scouted me while playing for the Oakwood boys’ team, and that’s when professional clubs started showing interest.”

Were there any other clubs you had options to join before Chelsea?

“Before choosing Chelsea, I had several other opportunities to explore.”

Tell us about your journey and the process of joining Chelsea.

What was it like getting called up to play for the national

“Being called up to play for England is the most incredible feeling—it’s like a reward for all the hard work you put in at the club. It’s a constant reminder to never give up.”

What does it mean to represent your country, and what’s the difference between club football and international football?

“During my trial at Chelsea, I immediately felt that it was where I belonged. The club welcomed me warmly, and from that moment, it was all about proving what I could bring to the table—and fortunately, things took off from there.”

How did you enjoy your time at Chelsea?

“My experience at Chelsea was invaluable in shaping me as a player and a person. The environment really fostered my growth, strengthening my mindset. The support from both the players and staff was incredible—they were always there to help me push forward in my career.”

“Representing my country fills me with immense pride, not just for me but my family. It’s a feeling that never gets old, and I’m always grateful for the opportunity to wear the badge. Club football is crucial to my development, preparing me to compete at the highest level internationally to give my best performance in every match.”

How was your time at Chelsea, and was it difficult to leave?

“My time at Chelsea was amazing, not only for my football development but for my personal growth. Leaving the club was tough because of my strong relationships with the players and coaches.”

Why did you leave?

“I decided to leave because I felt it was time to pursue a new career. After spending so many years with Chelsea from a young age, I was ready to explore fresh opportunities and challenges.”

Why did you choose Sporting Lisbon?

“I chose Sporting because it felt different from other clubs. They have a project that resonated with me, and I felt it was the best environment to improve as a player while fitting my style of play perfectly.”

How have you found the transition culturally and in terms of style of play?

“Moving away from home was challenging, but within the first week, I found my place at Sporting and Portugal. The girls were so welcoming, and I quickly felt comfortable. This autumn, Bvlgari Hotel London launches an exciting new collaboration with emerging sculptural artist Hannah Lim. The contemporary Italian hotel has commissioned the London-based BritishSingaporean artist and designer to reimagine the traditional afternoon tea stand, and transform the hotel façade into a sculptural work of art. The launch of the Hannah Lim x Bvlgari Hotel London Afternoon Tea coincides with the renowned London Design Festival, celebrating design and creativity across the city.

Hannah’s work is deeply influenced by her cultural identity and experience, manifesting in themes such as Orientalism and Chinoiserie; an 18th-century aesthetic trend. Known for creating ornamental yet furniture-like structures, Hannah’s pieces embody a playful and imaginative aesthetic that bridges between sculpture, installations, and drawing.

Specially designed afternoon tea stands take inspiration from this Chinoiserie theme, infusing them with the elegance and playfulness of her designs. The stands are joined by whimsical ‘snuff bottles’, capturing motifs such as flowers, plants and creatures from Asian mythology with a rich colour palette and lively forms; Lim reclaims and reinterprets traditional Chinoiserie with new designs that embrace multicultural identities. In addition, the hotel’s façade is transformed into a work of art, featuring a bold geometric pattern that reflects Lim’s distinctive style. Tell us about your time in the youth teams. How did those years shape you as a player?

“Growing up in the AC Milan academy was incredibly rewarding. They supported me throughout the journey, especially when it wasn’t easy to be far from home at the start. The environment was always welcoming, and I felt like part of a big family, contributing to my growth. As I mentioned, it was challenging to be away from home, but AC Milan was vital for me.”

Who were the most influential people in your development, both on and off the pitch?

“Of course, all the coaches I had throughout my career were the most influential figures on the field. The one who truly stands out and whom I can comfortably credit for who I am today is Sinisa Mihajlovic. He was like a second father to me, giving me the chance to debut and helping me grow. He was the most significant person for me, not only in football terms but also from a personal perspective.”

What does representing the national team mean to you? How do you prepare differently for international matches?

“Being part of the national team is an honour, a privilege. It’s something I dreamed of from a young age. To play and wear the captain’s armband is

incredible. Honouring the shirt and elevating it as much as possible is essential. Playing for your country is indescribable. For international games, I prepare just like I would for a league game. While the rhythm and atmosphere are different, my pre-game ritual stays the same—it’s my secret recipe to keep my habits consistent, especially when I’m comfortable with them.”

Can you share your experience playing for PSG and how it was different to your time in Italy?

“Playing in France is, of course, different from playing in Italy. Initially, it took some time to adapt to the new reality, but I found great people here who helped me adjust. It’s a club with immense prestige, and I’m thrilled to be here—proud to be an essential pillar of this team and club, and I hope my career here is long-lasting.”

Tell us about your experiences at the World Cup and the European Championship. What was it like representing Italy on such a big stage as captain?

“Missing the last two World Cups was very disappointing, but winning the Euros was a fantastic experience. It’s probably my most outstanding football achievement; I hold those memories very close. The last Euros didn’t go as we’d hoped, but we’re entirely focused on the journey to the next one. We’re all committed to improving, and the atmosphere is very positive—everyone is united in bringing Italy back to where we belong.”

Italian fans are known for their passion. How does their support affect your game?

“The support of Italian fans is magical. When we’re back in Italy, they make us feel their passion and pride, and we must give that back on the field. We receive a lot from them, so showing our all for the shirt and our beloved country only fits. The love we get from them is irreplaceable.”

“Now that I’m a father, while football doesn’t change, the emotions are too complex to put into words. Coming home to my family and child brightens even the most challenging days. It’s truly special.”

Outside of football, what are some of your favourite interests?

“Outside of football, I’m a family man. I enjoy being at home with them. My hobbies include tennis—I like both watching and playing. My good friend, Jannik Sinner, is the world’s number one, and I’ll be sure to get him to teach me a few tips to improve my game.”

What kind of music do you listen to? Do you have any favourite artists?

“I have a wide variety of tastes in music. I probably listen to Neapolitan music the most, along with reggaeton.”

“As for fashion, I like to switch up my style. I’m young and enjoy dressing casually, but I have a passion for tailored clothes—sporty but refined. I have many outfits and suits; it all depends on how I feel when I wake up.”

ARE YOU A POTENTIAL TARGET FOR ORGANISED CRIMINALS?

A tiny percentage of crimes against professional footballers are ever reported in the media. Most never reach the public’s attention, but the scale is staggering.

The assumption is that only players ` in the Premier League and other top European leagues are targeted, but this is not true.

Of course, professional footballers can become victims of crimes carried out by low-level, speculative criminals. Still, when they become victims of crime in their homes, it will inevitably be at the hands of sophisticated career criminals.

There are several variables which influence target selection by higher-level criminals, but male professional footballers, in the main, have been and will continue to be targeted for three main reasons:

They are known to earn huge sums of money when compared to the general population.

This level of disposable income means, that along with their partners, they purchase and enjoy luxury items of high value including watches, jewellery, handbags etc. These items are often small and of high residual value. They are favoured by criminals because of the ease with which they can be concealed and transported along with the demand that exists for high value goods at reduced prices.

The movements of footballers are highly predictable. 2

Their fixture commitments, both at home and away are known and published months in advance. They train when they are not playing. When they play away, in the main they stay overnight in hotels the day before the game. Some also stay in hotels the night before home fixtures. During International Break they are either representing their country or on a domestic holiday. During the close season they usually go on a domestic holiday, pre-season tour and are then engaged in pre-season training. The location of grounds and training facilities are well known along with the timings of players attendance. In short, it is relatively easy to work out when a player is and also is not at home.

Those intent on committing robberies want to know when individuals are at home and those that burgle houses, in the main want to know when they are empty.

They often have inadequate levels of security.

This can be easily overcome with a good level of research and effective planning. Of the very many footballers who have become victims of crime in their home, almost all had some level of security. A security infrastructure capable of deterring a motivated and equipped career criminal, must be multi-layered and stitched together for it to be effective. Most footballers tend to rely on a single or small number of measures that are easily overcome by those who know what they are doing.

When committing crime, criminals balance the risk of getting caught and the subsequent implications, against the financial rewards should they be successful. 1. You’re not to think you are anything special.

2. You’re not to think you are as good as we are.

The Scandinavians are a modest people, maybe too modest. In fact, there’s a word for it. Janteloven describes an attitude of disdain for acts of ambition and individualism.

Its roots go back to a book written in 1933. In it, Danish-Norwegian author Aksel Sandemose introduces the “10 Laws of Jante,” a set of restrictive commandments which govern the town in which the protagonist grows up. His point: that the oppressive social norms of Scandinavia had stifled progress for centuries.

3. You’re not to think you are smarter than we are.

4. You’re not to imagine yourself better than we are.

60 years later, on the north west coast of Norway on an island called Lofoten, a farmer called Tor Alfred declared to his wife and children his desire to build the ‘the most awesome golf course in the world’.

Jante, we have a problem.

Cancer took Tor’s life before he could enact his plan. Thankfully, his vision lived on through his son, Frode Hov. In 1998, 6 golf holes emerged from the soil in Gimsoya and Lofoten Links was born.

Fast forward to 2024 and Lofoten Links has cracked the Official World Top 100, receiving rave reviews not only for its beauty but for the thoughtfulness of its layout.

The rumbling call of the ultimate Norwegian golf adventure billowed loudly through the MANORS office.

A 3 hour flight from London to Oslo, another 1.5 hour flight to HarstadNarvik and 3 hours driving through epic Norwegian fjords brings us to our destination.

Pin flags and bunkers appear amongst the untouched wilderness, partially obscured by large angular boulders. As we approach the modest clubhouse,

the iconic second hole emerges. I point to it and tap my crew mates’ shoulders like an irritating kid who’s just spotted his favourite celebrity.

We make a bee line for the base of Hoven, the iconic sorting hat shaped monolith that guards the golf course. We’re 130 kilometres into the Arctic circle: but it’s almost 20 degrees. The camera crew puff in displeasure as we ascend, but we soon reap our reward. A 360 degree panoramic from Hoven’s peak encompasses one of the most spectacular views I’ve ever seen. A clear blue sky drapes behind cavernous fjords and into the shimmering Norwegian Sea that laps against the white sand beaches. From this elevation, the golf course appears laughably simple. Plotting my way from fairway to green between the rocks and heather, I plan my attack.

But the golf must wait. We check in to our comfortable Lofoten Links Cabins and make our way to the nearby beach for our first taste of Norwegian culture. A tube shaped, woodfired sauna sits by the grass on the inland side of the sandy cove.

More than simply a method of self care, the sauna is a 10,000 year old pillar of Scandinavian culture. Created by means of survival during harsh Finnish winters, caves were enclosed with animal skins and heated with fire. The caves, now sterilised by the smoke, could be heated continuously by pouring water on the rocks. Within these walls children were born, Gods worshipped and elderly passed.

ULTIMATE NORWEGIAN GOLF ADVENTURE

These were more than saunas, they were liminal spaces between this earth and the next. An old proverb states: ‘Two places are holy: church and sauna’. We strip off and head inside, pour some water on the hissing coals and wait for the sweats. Rushing back out the door we set a pace to the Arctic water and stumble in.

Back to sauna, back to sea

It’s after 7pm when we finally dust off the clubs, but there’s no rush. Like a stubborn dinner guest, the sun sticks around until after 11pm. If we had come a month earlier, the sun wouldn’t have set at all.

Katie, Head of Marketing at Lofoten, greets us excitedly as we enter the makeshift pro shop. Her accent isn’t a local one, she’s from Iowa. I can sense the energy exuding from her, it stands out like an aurora amongst her Norwegian colleagues. She pulls us aside and with a sense of relief, showers us in enthusiasm for her new back garden.

We limber up on the opening tee in front of a fairway that curves around the rocky bay to the left. It’s a short hole but our legs are weak from the morning climb. The sea and the rough to the right clamour for our attention, but we must resist.

Jacob Sjoman’s image of the Northern Lights shining above the 2nd hole puts it in contention for most iconic par 3 in Europe. A green sits amidst a horse shoe shape of car sized boulders that escalate to a subtle peak directly behind the flag. A sandy spit stretches out to the ominous rocky outcrop, connecting it to the mainland. For all of its macho facade, a wedge is all thats required to hoist you safely aboard.

Beside the green sits the 3rd tee which demands a 260 yard carry over the Norwegian Sea to reach the fairway.

The green, perched across the peaceful water to the left, tempts you to bite off more of the delicious dog leg than you can reasonably chew.

The ethereal look and feel of the course under the evening sun makes sense. The valley we’re standing in was an amphitheatre for Viking sacrifice, but even they were late to the party: natives farmed the land here back when dates ended with BC. The ancient hum from the mountain and glint from the prehistoric granite puts me in a dream like haze.

There is no more dramatic trio of opening holes in the world.

Eventually the persistent light fades and we make our way to Laven for dinner. The restaurant is just a stone’s throw down the winding road. High wooden ceilings are propped up by varnished tubes of timber, hanging from them are large oatmeal coloured drapes that kiss the floor. This is dinner in a Viking longship. The food is painfully fresh, and served by a young skeletal Norwegian man with tasteful tattoos on his forearms and a polite, gentle manner that makes you sink deeper into your chair. We eat cod with pickled cabbage and peas, beef entrecote with perfectly roasted baby potatoes. I feel stronger with every bite.

8. You’re not to laugh at us.

With the shoot wrapped up we head south to the island of Henningsvaer. The weather has turned but it enhances the drama of our short journey. We cross endless rounded bridges linking blocks

of angular grey islands. Pulling into the small town reveals a large factory building with a camel colour facade: Trevarefabrikken, our watering hole for the evening.

As we knock back some Norwegian IPA’s, my mind tracks back to Frode who, 30 years ago took on his late father’s dream to build ‘the most awesome golf course in the world’. He ploughed through snow and ice, to board meetings and agronomy seminars in the hope that maybe he could turn his family’s farmland into something truly special. 30 years later, Lofoten Links debuted in the World Top 100.

But as our group of ten chatter around the table it’s clear to me that his ambition has amounted to something far greater than a breathtaking patch of manicured land. 10 of us have flown from the farthest corners of the planet and met here, on an island deep in the Arctic Circle to embark on an adventure that otherwise would not have crossed our paths. We’ve hiked mountains, swam in oceans, eaten unthinkably delicious food, lost dozens of golf balls and met gritty, inspiring people.

In a land where you’re not supposed to think you’re anything special, Frode Hov decided this place was. Embarking on a display of ambition that would make even the most outspoken culture gulp. On behalf of golfers the world over, thank you, Frode.

Can you tell us about your childhood in Birmingham, Alabama?

“What was it like growing up there? It was simple: I played basketball and football, but it was nice because it was one of those places where everyone knew everybody and you played the same teams regularly and saw the same people. Simple is the best way to describe it.”

What inspired you to start playing football, especially in a place where it’s not the most popular sport?

“My parents signed me up for it when I was young, and I wouldn’t say that football was a sport that I chose, but I was pretty good at it from a young age, so I always stuck with it. I enjoyed being good at a sport and, especially in a sport that made me stick out a little bit.”

Who were some key influences in your life during your youth soccer days? Any family or friends who helped guide your journey?

“My family, as well as a coach from my early years, Coach Tomas Fox, when I was in Alabama, was influential as he was the first guy who showed me that it was possible to play at a professional level if you worked hard. He was the first ex-professional that I met. He used to play in Argentina, so he was the first person to spark in his brain that being professional was attainable. ”

Was there a specific moment you realised that football could be your career?

“Once, I was playing in Houston and realised it was a possibility. I played in the academy against guys who had already signed professional contracts and were still holding my own or even excelling against them.”

CHILDHOOD AND EARLY YEARS

How did your experiences in the youth academies help shape your path? What was the jump from American youth leagues to European football like?

“My experience in Houston led me to understand and realise how close I was to becoming a professional. That was my first professional academy, and I was first playing against professionals and training with the first team. People say, ‘It’s hard to become a professional, but it’s harder to stay one,’ that’s what I learned when I got to FC Dallas every day; you have to fight for your spot. The jump to Europe was a big one as I went from FC Dallas, recognised as one of the best academies in the US, to Bayern Munich, recognised as one of the best teams in the world! So it was a big jump because, in America, we very much put our values in physical attributes like strength and speed, but when you get to Europe, of course, that’s important, but they also really want to teach you about technique and things like that. Sometimes, I’d probably neglect specific techniques while playing in America.”

What was moving from FC Dallas to Bayern Munich’s youth system like? How did it change your approach to the game?

“It was a big change, it taught me the sacrifices that you need to make in order to succeed at the highest level. Not many people my age, especially from the US, were doing that, so it taught me the importance of physically caring for yourself and how seriously you need to take it. ”

FOOTBALL CAREER JOURNEY

You’ve played for Bayern Munich, Hoffenheim, and now Crystal Palace. What were the most significant differences between German and English football cultures?

“In England, it feels like you’re playing almost every other day. Also, no disrespect to the Bundesliga, but from top to bottom in the Premier League, you know you’re in for a really tough game. You have to be 100% every time to win each week in the Premier League, and there are no easy games.”

How did you adapt to life in the Premier League, and what has your experience at Crystal Palace been like?

“It took some time for me to adapt to the Premier League. It’s a very fast and physical league, just a fantastic league all around, so it took a bit of time for me to get used to it, but once I got my feet under me, I feel like I’ve done well. Also, Palace is a great and memorable club with some brilliant people in and around the club. The term’ family’ is often overused at clubs, but every angle of Palace genuinely feels like a big family.”

What are some of your standout memories from your early Premier League games?

“I think my debut at Liverpool was enormous; that was my favourite memory in a sold-out weeknight game to make my debut was my standout moment.”

Can you describe the feeling of playing alongside talented Premier League teammates? Are there any players who helped you settle in?

“It’s wild when you play with these guys; you don’t realise how long they’ve been doing it. Even some guys who aren’t labelled as ‘Household Names’ are terrific and have excelled in the Premier League for several years. Guys like Joel Ward and James Tomkins really helped me, as well as significant characters like Wilfried Zaha & Marc Guehi, helped me settle in and make me feel like part of the family at Crystal Palace.”

Representing the US Men’s National Team is a big honour. How does it feel to put on that jersey and represent your country?

“It’s the best feeling in the world, and I don’t think anything can replicate it. Being able to represent your country in any way is impressive, but standing out there and hearing the national anthem, knowing you’re about to describe your last name, your hometown and everything and everyone that has been a part of your journey is so special.”

What are your thoughts on your future in club and international football? Any ambitions you’d like to achieve?

“It has to be playing in the Champions League again; that’s something I want to do, and from a national team standpoint, I want to play in a home World Cup in 2026. I want to go far in a World Cup with the USMNT.”

LIFE OUTSIDE OF FOOTBALL

How do you spend your time off the pitch? Are there any specific hobbies or interests you’re passionate about?

“ I like to relax and watch Netflix and documentaries; I’m re-watching Game of Thrones right now, so I love that. I also like fashion, always looking at what’s coming up, looking for new brands on the scene and seeing what’s next.”

What role has your family played in supporting you through all the changes and moves in your career?

“They’ve been my backbone the whole time, and without them, I probably would’ve had a mental breakdown in the early years. I was going through it when I came to Bayern; it was tough not knowing the language and having all my friends back at college in the States, so without my family, it would’ve been challenging.”

Do you hold onto any unique American or Southern traditions while living abroad?

“Only little things like saying “Yes Sir/ No Sir” or “Yes Ma’am/No Ma’am” as it’s some of the stuff that’s hard to undo, so yeah, it’s a lot of my slang like “Y’all” but not more than that.”

Who are some of your favourite musicians or artists? Do you have any specific pre-game music rituals?

“I’m really into my R&B Music; I like guys like 6Lack and guys like that.

“What I love most about London is the different cultures, foods, people, and areas and how diverse everything is.”

I don’t have a particular pre-game ritual, but I usually listen to my favourite songs on a recent playlist on the drive to the ground, and then once I get to the stadium, I put on some Hip-Hop or some Rap.”

How would you describe your style off the field? Is fashion something you’re interested in?

“Yeah, I’m definitely into fashion, and my style off the field is a mixture of being authentic, rarely big brands, but a laid-back aesthetic. I’m more interested in how the clothes fit than how the brand looks.”

What do you love most about London life? Any favourite spots to unwind or explore?

“What I love most about London is the different cultures, foods, people, and areas and how diverse everything is.”

Do you follow other sports? Which ones, and are there athletes who inspire you?

“I follow basketball as well as College Football. Kyrie Irving inspires me not just in how he plays but also in how he doesn’t care what people think of him. He’s very authentic, and I admire him.”

If you weren’t a professional football player, what other career or interest would you pursue?

“Growing up, I wanted to be able to create and sketch shoes, using different colour ways and looking for them.”

Consistency is key in professional sports. How do you maintain your focus and resilience throughout the season?

“It took some time to maintain focus and resilience, but my downtime is crucial to me: to get away from football, focus on myself, and unwind.”

How do you handle setbacks, whether a tough loss, an injury, or time away from the pitch?

“Understanding that it’s in God’s Hands, I’m religious, and I sometimes say a setback like an injury with more time away is just a sign that maybe I needed extra time to prepare. As much as it’s tough to watch your team without you, you have to understand that it’s not your timing but His, so my religion helps me with that.”

What does success mean to you at this stage in your career, and how do you keep pushing forward?

“Success to me is making the people around me proud; that’s the biggest thing, and that’s what’s important because you’ll never be able to make every fan proud or every coach proud, but as long as you can step off the pitch and know that you gave 100%, that’s something that makes me think that I’m being successful and doing everything that I can do. “

What advice would you give to young American players dreaming of making it in Europe or the Premier League?

“I keep pushing forward by never being content with my last performance. I may have had a good game, but I can always build on that and do something better, even 1% better. Reece Mennie is a seasoned investor, entrepreneur and business leader The Founder and CEO of award-winning nationwide property developer HJ Collection, property investment specialists Hunter Jones Group, and forwardthinking digital marketing agency Bigas Marketing, Reece’s entrepreneurial journey began at 17 when he left full-time education to help his father manage a print business. Here, his natural sales acumen quickly doubled the company's growth and increased its staff from four to ten within his first year in industry.

Reece launched HJ Collection in 2019, with an overarching vision to acquire unloved commercial sites and repurpose them into residential units. In just five years, the company has grown into a reputable property development firm, supported by a team of over 20 property development specialists and an innovative turnkey business model - whereby the entire acquisition and development process is managed in-house. HJ Collection has successfully acquired 13+ sites and leveraged permitted development rights.
