A LETTER FROM THE TEAM In our latest issue, we reflected on change and growth, and this edition continues that journey, a celebration not only of the season but of milestones that mark Ball magazine’s story so far.

At just 18, he left Brazil for Europe — not with guarantees, but with grit. From standout spells at Gil Vicente to earning his place at Atlético de Madrid, Lino’s rise hasn’t been built on talent alone, but on character, consistency, and a grounded mindset shaped by family, faith, and a deep love for the game.

Career & Journey Can you walk us through your journey from Brazil to European football?

“My journey from Brazil to Europe moved quickly. I joined São Bernardo’s youth team at 16, and after standing out, I went on loan to Flamengo in 2016, where I spent about a year and a half. I returned to São Bernardo in 2018, and a year later, in 2019, I was loaned to Gil Vicente in Portugal. I spent three seasons there, and after a strong final season, I was signed by Atlético de Madrid during the 2021/22 winter transfer window. I officially joined Atlético in 2022/23 but went on loan to Valencia for a season, where I had a solid year. I returned to Atlético and have now been with the club for two seasons — I really found my rhythm in 2023/24 and played regularly through the 2024/25 campaign.”

What were some of the biggest challenges you faced moving abroad at a young age?

“The biggest challenge was adapting to something completely new, a different place and culture. I was a bit scared initially, but I trusted everything would fall into place.”

How did it feel when you first signed with Atlético Madrid?

“It was a dream—big players, a top coach, and a massive club. I was excited but also entirely focused on the challenge ahead.”

What’s the biggest difference between playing in Brazil and Europe?

“The biggest difference is the intensity. In Europe, the game is faster, more dynamic, and tactical. It’s a bit slower and more relaxed in Brazil, and talent plays a big role there. But in Europe, talent matters, and so does consistent hard work.”

Which coaches have had the biggest influence on your playing style?

“Ricardo Soares in my last year in Portugal. He taught me a lot, especially tactically. He helped me understand that football isn’t just a game; it’s something studied and thought out. Simeone at Atlético taught me courage, grit, and determination to never stop believing.”

“I grew up in São Bernardo do Campo, in the Parque São Bernardo community. My childhood was amazing. I was always outside and learned early what it meant to be humble and a good person. I played football on the streets and at the local courts, having fun, being happy, and always smiling.”

How important has your family been in your football journey?

“Family has been everything in my journey. My dad used to take me to games, and my mom would find ways to help with transport, even when it wasn’t easy. They’ve always believed in me, and to this day, they still support, guide, and encourage me. My family and close friends mean a lot to me.”

Were there any sacrifices your family made for your career?

“Yes — my mom gave me money even when she didn’t have it, because she believed in me. My dad took me to trials even when he had to work.”

“My city taught me the difference between right and wrong, to treat people well, and not follow bad examples. I carry that with me in every part of my career.”

“I enjoy family time by playing video games, going out for dinner with my family, walking around the city, and going to the movies, parks, and museums.”

Are you a gamer, reader, or do you prefer getting outdoors?

“I’m definitely a gamer, but I’ve got a genuine appreciation for nature too.”

How important is mental health and balance in your lifestyle?

“It’s really important to me. I read self-care books, take time away from social media, and learn from people or videos that help strengthen the mind.

I also work with a psychologist, and that support is essential.”

“I relax by being at home, playing video games, and focusing on my recovery.”

Do you have any daily habits that keep you grounded?

“Definitely. I try to stay humble, keep things simple, and treat everyone with the same respect. I never let myself think I’m above anyone.”

ANDREAS Pereira Just moments before our interview and cover shoot, an unexpected duty called Andreas away.

He had every reason to postpone, yet true to his word and determined not to let us down, he took care of what was needed and flew straight back to London, a true touch of class.

That level of commitment speaks volumes. Beyond his talent on the pitch, Andreas is humble, and genuinely respectful of people’s time and effort. Sundays, he added, carry their own meaning. “If I’m working, the best Sunday is with a win, and as a bonus, with an assist or a goal. If it’s a free Sunday, exactly like I described for a day off.”

When asked who he spends the most time with outside of football, Andreas smiled. “With my kids. I always dreamed of being a father.”

Conversation then shifted to love and relationships. He reflected quietly before answering: “I believe it’s quality time, it’s something I really value from all the people I love.”

His faith, too, is central to his peace of mind. “In my prayers and my moments with God.” And sometimes, there are surprises fans might not know. With a grin, he revealed: “I’m left-handed but rightfooted, which is not very common. I speak six languages.”

Over steaming cups of tea, his drink of choice, Andreas shared what happiness looks like away from football. “A perfect day off is waking up and having coffee with my kids and my wife, Patricia. Then going to play golf with my dad, coming back home for lunch with my mum and the family. Having friends over, playing some Teqball, chatting, laughing, and later in the evening playing video games or watching a film. That’s a peaceful and joyful day, the simple things in life are the best.”

When asked about returning to England with Fulham after his time in Brazil, he explained: “It was hugely rewarding. My time in Brazil was necessary to make me stronger, both as an athlete and as a person. I’m also one of the few players who left the Premier League for South American football and came back. The first season was incredible, the second even better. That’s when I finally established myself with the Brazilian national team and reached my best football.”

His years at Flamengo gave him lessons beyond football. “Resilience, strength and focus above all. Brazil is very different from England, but what we can learn from the Brazilian people is that life’s good things are in the simple details, and that every day is a new opportunity. Always with faith in God and a smile on your face.”

Asked to name the best player he has lined up alongside, he didn’t hesitate.

“Neymar Jr.” His proudest footballing moment? “Wearing the Brazil shirt.”

And the most influential manager?

“Mourinho.”

Even his pre-match ritual reflects balance and culture. “I say my prayers and put on some Pagode, Brazilian music.”

When we asked what he might have pursued had football not been the path, his imagination soared: “A pilot or an astronaut.”

One memory remains unforgettable.

“The volley I scored for Brazil in Brasília during the World Cup qualifiers.” But even that, he admitted, was outshone by one moment above all. “It was unforgettable, one of the happiest days of my life.”

Back then, I really stood out there, it felt like home. I still remember the training days, coming back home, and the teammates who remain my friends to this day. I arrived very young, full of plans, and above all honoured to be at one of the biggest clubs in the world. When I made the step up, I was ready to learn from the best, and at that time, it was a historic team. Great times for the Reds.”

We spoke too of challenges. Asked about the toughest opponent he has ever faced, his reply was sharp: “Bernardo Silva.”

But it was setbacks, not opponents, that tested him most. “When I wasn’t playing every match at Manchester, being left out of the squad. For an athlete, not being in the matchday group is a very tough moment.”

So what would he tell his younger self, back in the academy days? His advice was simple: “Always play with a smile on your face.”

On the difference between leagues, he was direct. “The quality of the pitches and the intensity of the game.” And when asked to define his style, he was certain. “Brazilian, always.”

The subject of mindset and motivation brought a different tone. How does he stay sharp through long seasons? “I try to set new goals every year and, as much as possible, separate work from home life. You can’t focus on football 24/7.”

How does he handle pressure?

“Big games are the best. I prefer them, when everyone is watching you. I don’t feel pressure, I see it as a privilege.”

The conversation ended where his journey began, in Lommel, between Belgium and the Netherlands.

Reflecting on his childhood, he told us: “Like all kids, it’s a quiet and peaceful place to live. But I had a short childhood because I got into football very young.”

It was there that his footballing identity took shape. “I’ve got Brazilian flair in my blood and European tactics in my mind.”

As for childhood dreams? His answer was clear: “I always dreamed of playing for PSV, it was my only dream.”

And friendships from those days remain. “My best friend is from Lommel, we’re still great friends today.”

Looking back on his roots and career, he summarised with simplicity.

“Yes, I feel I carry both in my feet.”

A Day in the Life of Ekow ‘The Engine’ Essuman: The Man Who Claimed Seven Title Belts in Seven Years There’s talent, and then there’s obsession, and Ekow has a record to prove it. Since turning pro in 2016, he’s carved his way through the boxing ranks the hard way, collecting seven sanctioned titles in seven years: the English, British, Commonwealth, IBF European, WBC International Silver, WBO European, and most recently, the WBO Global Welterweight crown.

No hype machine. No shortcuts. Just discipline, sharp instincts, and a motor that doesn’t stop. He’s unified belts, outpointed former champions, and defended titles while staying grounded in music, family, and the slower rituals that keep him level, like gaming, breathwork, and quietly watching squirrels.

So what keeps a seven-time titleholder moving like he’s just getting started?

Ball magazine was invited to spend a day inside the rhythm of Ekow Essuman, not just the boxer but the artist, the husband, the dad, and the dreamer. The morning starts quietly — no alarms. “My mornings start when my body naturally wakes up,” Ekow tells us, “followed by meditation, mindfulness and breathwork to prepare for training.”

But before the gloves go on, the creative mind kicks in. Under the alias Paakow Deimus, or PD, Ekow channels his energy into music—writing and producing beats beyond hype. His fight-night track “Shosholoza (The Go Faster Anthem)”, made for his Josh Taylor bout, wasn’t just his walkout music.

It was a personal blueprint.

“It’s essentially a message to myself before the fight. I’ve structured the song with specific cues and phrases that hit during my ring walk, reminding me of my most dangerous moments and achievements. The second verse, in particular, feels like I’m talking to myself outside my head, like a form of musical self-hypnosis.

It’s cognitive behavioural therapy wrapped inside an EDM track.”

When he’s not behind a mic, he’s often behind a book.

“I enjoy reading about human and sportspecific psychology,” he says, confessing a deep love for gadgets, anime, and manga.

“I’m a full-on techhead. I’m a bit of a computer geek at heart.”

And just when you think you’ve got him figured out, he hits you with this:

“She keeps me grounded and inspired in all my pursuits.”

“I love squirrels. They’re my favourite animal, and I could watch them for hours.”

That grounding is vital, especially in a sport that demands tunnel vision.

Ekow’s parents set the tone early on.

As the day moves on, so does the rhythm — but his home life truly sets the tempo. His wife, Holly Essuman, founded The Reformer Studio, a powerhouse Pilates brand with nine studios across the UK.

“My parents constantly told me that when you do something, you should give it your all and strive to be the best version of yourself.”

And that ethos clearly stuck.

“We’re all products of our childhood and surroundings. Being born in Botswana and growing up in a beautiful culture surrounded by semi-desert heat made me naturally explorative. Moving to the UK was another adjustment, which helped shape my adaptability. I’m proud to call Nottingham home now.”

Boxing wasn’t always the plan — it started as a mission to lose weight.

But that sense of adaptability became a weapon.

“Boxing is often about making small, incremental changes mid-fight. The ability to solve the Rubik’s Cube in high-pressure moments can be the difference between victory and defeat.”

As for ringside support?

“Yes, my wife and dad are usually there, supporting me through all the highs and lows. On the other hand, my mum doesn’t like to watch live —she prefers to hide behind the sofa instead!”

Friends say he’s “the happiest, giddiest fighter you’ll ever meet,” and he agrees.

THE SWITCH FLIPS Now it’s time to flip the switch. Ekow grabs a coffee and a light breakfast, then heads to David Lloyd Clubs, where he uses infrared heat followed by a cold plunge.

“I wake up around 7:00 a.m. and start my day with meditation, focusing on mindfulness and setting intentions, alongside breathwork to prime my nervous system… I do a five to ten minute cold plunge to wake up and fully prepare for the day ahead.”

As evening rolls in, he winds down with more breathwork at 8 p.m., then lets his mind switch off with a series or films between 9 and 11 p.m.

STYLE, FUEL AND SWITCH-OFFS Outside the gym, Ekow’s sense of style is all about comfort, consistency and character.

“I know it might sound funny, but I love wearing Ecko. It could be the name connection, but I genuinely like the fit and feel of the clothes.”

Style, for him, is more than threads.

It’s branding, nostalgia, and identity, down to his own logo.

“My Ekow the Engine skull-rider logo was inspired by Skeletor from He-Man, my favourite comic book character growing up.”

And the energy that fuels him? Just as on-brand.

“Since people call me The Engine because of my relentless energy, I think it’s only fitting to fuel my sessions with Relentless Energy drinks; they taste great too.”

“After a tough fight or a gruelling session, I recover by using a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and

doing a cold plunge to help with soreness and inflammation.”

I had a food intolerance test done to understand my body better because you can’t put diesel in a petrol engine, and you can’t fuel yourself with foods that don’t agree with you.”

And when it comes to food, he doesn’t hold back on flavour.

“I always treat myself to a good meal, usually a steak at Miller & Carter. If I’m back home in Nottingham, my go-to spots are The Lobster Pot Thai

IN THE RING AND THE MIND Before boxing, there was basketball, but boxing took hold when he was pushed to train his weaker hand.

“I used to play basketball at a decent level, but when I trialled with Nottingham’s best team, I was told to improve my fitness and develop ambidexterity. So I took a year away from team sports to work on my weaker hand and started boxing purely for fitness.”

“My first amateur coach, Ray Rickets at Bilborough Amateur Boxing Club, taught me the physical demands of the sport and the importance of hard work. You get out what you put in. Later, I met my now pro coach, Barrington Brown, who opened my eyes to the technical, artistic side of boxing. I often say it’s like extreme physical chess, you’re thinking several steps ahead while tactically controlling the moment.”

From his first fight, it was clear.

“Yes, after my very first amateur bout.

I fought someone who was about to turn pro and comfortably handled him. They arranged a rematch, but swapped him for an even higherranked opponent. I didn’t flinch. I went in and knocked the guy out. That was my introduction to the lion’s den.

Everything was stacked against me, and I proved I belonged at the top.”

His passion hasn’t faded, and his goals haven’t either.

“I’ve won seven titles in seven years, and I’m nowhere near done. I haven’t reached my ultimate goal yet and won’t feel complete until I win my first world title. And I say first because I want all the belts. I genuinely believe I’m the best 147lb fighter in the world.

Once I get one title, I’m going for unification and the undisputed crown.”

He prepares in solitude, focused, locked in, and backed by a team that works in sync.

“I prepare in isolation, living with my best friend and manager, James Wells, throughout camp. He’s more than a manager; his meticulous approach means nothing gets overlooked.

He stays in contact with my sports psychologist to keep me mentally on track and works closely with my coach, Barrington Brown, to ensure we all operate as one cohesive unit.”

“During fight week, James becomes almost like a personal assistant, taking care of my nutrition, hydration, logistics, media, biohacking, and all boxing-related matters so I can stay focused on the job.”

“I’m a tunnel-visioned workaholic, so my coach manages my output carefully, tapering my training through the stages of camp to ensure I’m not wasting energy. That way, every session counts without overdoing it.”

When it comes to pressure, he’s been training for it long before the ring.

“Life experiences have taught me how to adapt under pressure, and that ability is something I carry into the ring. My sports psychologist, Lee Johnson (IG: @sportmodeuk), helps keep me mentally sharp and grounded in arguably the world’s most brutal sport.”

“I’ve lived in different cultures, I was born into a Ghanaian household, raised in Botswana, and moved to Nottingham at age 11. Adapting to change has become second nature, and that’s been key to protecting my mental well-being.”

LOOKING AHEAD After winning 7 belts in 7 years as a professional, world titles are on the horizon for Ekow Essuman.

So what comes next, once the gloves are off?

He’s not short on passion or plans.

“Besides making music, I’m passionate about giving back through my business, KO Interventions. I work with my business partner, Mike Elland — a behaviour mentor — to deliver behavioural workshops in schools, using boxing to inspire the next generation.”

He dreams of creative growth.

“I’d love to participate in fashion shoots, and once I retire from boxing, I’ll pour more time into producing music.”

And even with a career built on combat, he still dreams of simpler joys.

“I’ve always wanted to learn to play the guitar, ski, or snowboard. But I’ll probably wait until after my boxing career to do either.”

True Royalty The forecast looks bleak, but we knew that when we left London: fortune favours the bold. Glancing between the sodden road ahead and the weather app, I mutter to myself, cursing the idiom that led me here.

Royal Lytham. These are the pillars of decadence and grandeur worthy of their monarchic title. Ornate clubhouses that date back to the 19th century, layouts that hold a majority stake in the GB&I Top 100.

From the front seat of the car, sitting just in front of the clubhouse, a saturated, reed-littered marshland comes in and out of view between the droplets on the windscreen.

Cowering from the rain, we make a dash for the front door. The warmth hits first, followed closely by the heritage. The main lounge isn’t a conventional one. Divided almost exactly in two, the left half has been transformed into a museum. Displayed on the far wall, like a rack of the latest Taylormade woods, is a 60-something strong collection of pristine hickories.

“The clouds will pass soon”, says my optimistic passenger. I look at the sign above the glowing pro shop window, Royal North Devon. Pfft, the cheek.

Salvers, bowls and trophies line the dark wood cabinets on either side.

I’m no history buff, but I give a nod of approval.

The correct line off the first tee is ambiguous. 3 sheep meander between the tall rushes on the left.

Two tall poles with artificial crows on them blow in the misty distance. A burn on the right snakes towards the sea.

A smatter of rain persists as we continue toward the coast. Gaps between the rushes offer glances into the distance across the cracked marshland.

From the 6th tee, the view looks north toward the Bristol Channel, and across the bay is Saunton. Towering white sand dunes on the far side of the estuary wind into the sea, hazed distance. As the round progresses, we venture into the heart of the marshland, fairways snake just below the surface of the reeds, our 3 ball like a rowing boat tracking through the Amazon.

The Royal title elicits images of grandeur: golden cornice, upturned noses, bejewelled goblets. But there are no manicured details at Royal North Devon. There’s more sheep shit on the fairways than members. 2 holes were recently re-routed because the tide devoured them. The old greens lie dormant next to the rock barricades.

Rushes overflow onto the fairways, spilling into untidy places.

But there’s a rugged agricultural whisper that the adventure golfer hears loud and clear. This is a plot of land untouched since its inception, where the barrier between golf and landscape isn’t just blurred but non-existent. There’s grandeur in the atmosphere, in the warmth of the clubhouse and the low-lying mist that creeps in from the sea. There’s a sense of pride in the shit that lies on the fairways: it’s a marker of authenticity.

The grandeur is in the air, not in the manicured turf.

Neatly riveted bunkers and passwordprotected front gates can create the illusion of royalty, but inviting everyone in, cattle and all, with the confidence that your club needs no veneers requires a level of selfassuredness that the more opulent destinations of the United Kingdom could only dream of; true royalty.

Fresh off Paris Fashion Week, Gianni landed in London and wasted no time soaking it in. “Out of all the places that I’ve gone to, London’s the one I’ve come back to the most,” he says.

“Everyone shows so much love here!”

He raves about his favorite London haunts like Eden Lounge, Tape, and the “vibes-only” Nova Park Royal. But don’t let the party stops fool you, he’s also got a soft spot for Harrods food court. “I’ll just walk across the street, grab a juice, maybe some pasta… then get back to interviews or writing. It’s the best.”

This is what makes Gianni different.

He’s as likely to be found behind the camera on a production call as he is front row at Fashion Week, or pulling off a shootout in a designer suit.

Oh, and just in case you’re wondering, he’s an Arsenal fan. “I love watching Premier League whenever I’m here,” he says. “Arsenal’s my team.” And who does he rate as the most stylish player? “Declan Rice, hands down,” he adds with a grin. “That guy’s got drip.”

Hockey Dreams and Hollywood Detours Before Power, before Brayden, before LA, Gianni was a kid with a hockey stick and a gift for causing chaos.

“I was always the one getting in trouble for being funny,” he laughs.

“I actually got drafted to play professionally in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. But I was always joking around, making people laugh, even in the locker room.”

A coach planted the seed, “Why don’t you be an actor or a comedian?”

And the rest unraveled like a good Hollywood script, with a twist of HBO influence. “I watched Entourage, and I was like, wait, they’re famous, they live in a mansion, girls love them, and they’re having fun? That’s the life?”

It wasn’t long before Gianni swapped skates for scripts. He took improv, enrolled in acting classes in Rhode Island, and finally moved to LA, ready to make that dream his reality.

Becoming Brayden Weston, Bad Boy Energy Meets Brainpower Power Book II: Ghost launched Gianni into a new stratosphere. As Brayden, he became the slick, street-savvy best friend turned drug dealer fans couldn’t get enough of.

“It was the perfect role,” he grins. “I got to do comedy, action, kill people, wear cool clothes, what more could I ask for?”

But what really stuck was how much of him lived in the character.

“Brayden is 100% me in a parallel universe,” he says. “Minus the crime scene, but the style of clothing? That’s so me. I’m bold and love expressing who I am.”

The challenge? Balancing the evolution. “At first, he was just a goofball doing it for the thrill. But as things got darker, family issues, murders, bigger deals, it became harder to keep that comedy side alive.

The producers would ask for humor in scenes, and I’m like, ‘I just killed six people, how funny can I be right now?’”

Together, they’ve launched a production company and are shaping a multimedia network with podcasts and original shows. Gianni even writes short stories designed to sell as TV series. “I don’t love writing the way I love acting,” he admits, “but there are just so many ideas I want to bring to life.”

On directing? He’s all in, when he can get the shot. “I always wanted to direct on Power, but it was tough with all the legendary directors already lined up.”

He’s adamant about one thing though, “The best directors are actors. I tell every aspiring director, take an acting class. You can’t know what it’s like to be on set, to have a mic over your head, to hit your mark, until you’ve lived it.”

But there’s more to Gianni than onscreen chaos. Off-set, he’s building an empire, writing, producing, podcasting, and dreaming up the next big thing with his business partner, Power costar Michael Rainey Jr.
