Balancing life on and off the field isn’t always easy, but over the years, I’ve found my rhythm through the routines, habits, and little things that keep me grounded. Whether it’s my go-to travel outfit, the meals that fuel me, the music that motivates me, or my love of exploring new places, these are the details that make up my world. Here’s a glimpse into my life.

Fabian: “Something quite comfortable!

Some lovely fabric trousers and a jumper or hoodie.” ball. Who is your fashion inspiration, both on and off the field?

Fabian: “I don’t have one, to be honest!” ball. What’s your approach to accessorising, like watches or jewellery?

Fabian: “I love watches! I’m a shareholder in a Swiss watch brand, and I think a good watch makes every outfit look better.”

Fabian: “It’s always the same — I keep it relatively simple! It would be rice with some vegetables and protein (chicken or salmon). I sometimes add sweet potatoes as a source of carbs.” ball. How do you handle cravings for less healthy foods, especially during the season?

Fabian: “I still think sometimes you must treat your body (or your soul) with something you like, even if it’s not the best. So if we have a day off after a game, having some chocolate or sweets is not bad. I don’t always do this, but if I really want it, I’ll go for it.” ball. What’s the one food you can’t live without, and why?

Fabian: “I love everything ricerelated! Rice is not just healthy for me—I enjoy it in different variations, like risotto or other dishes.”

SIC ball. “What music do you listen to to get pumped up before a match?

Fabian: It always depends on the mood! It could be some hip-hop, or sometimes I also like Deep House.”

ball. Do you have favourite artists or genres that help you relax after a challenging game?

Fabian: The music in the dressing room after games depends on the DJ—it’s really up to them! ball. Is there a particular song or album that has been a constant companion throughout your career?

Fabian: “Throughout my career, it has changed a lot, but one artist I always feel has good music and has been a staple in my playlist over the years is Eminem.”

ball. What’s your must-have item when packing for away games or international travel?

Fabian: “My laptop and a book are my go-to items.” ball. Do you take the opportunity to explore new cities or countries when you’re on the road, or do you prefer to focus solely on football?

Fabian: “During the season, it can be very hard and tiring since games come quickly. My main focus is football, preparation for games, and recovery. However, if the time is right and there’s an opportunity, I like to see new things. Even here in England, there are lovely places to explore.

I also love going back home to Switzerland to visit family.” ball: Are there any particular destinations or countries you’ve visited during your career that left a lasting impression on you?

Fabian: “I’ve been fortunate to be part of the national team for over 10 years, and in that time, I’ve visited almost every country in Europe and many others abroad. I wish I had more time to explore some of these places, but I’m grateful for what I’ve already seen.

Hopefully, there’s more to come!”

CAREER I can’t remember when I didn’t have the ball at my feet! Any opportunity, I’d be in the garden playing with my dad. Representing England youth teams and overcoming my ACL injury has been the most defining moment of my career so far.

To handle the pressures of being a professional athlete, I lean on my teammates and friends within the industry who truly understand the demands. A typical training day starts with waking up and heading into the facility. From there, it’s breakfast, analysis, pre-activation, training, lunch, and gym. Once I’m home, it’s about recovery, eating, sleeping, and repeating the cycle.

Football is filled with highs and lows, but I stay motivated through tough times by leaning into the people around me. My family and friends are my biggest cheerleaders. Every game is big for me, so I don’t put too much pressure on myself. I prepare with the game plan and make sure I enjoy it.

Growing up, Rachel Yankey and Kelly Smith were huge inspirations for me.

Reading their books and following their journeys motivated me a lot.

The transition from South London to the North East has been a change — especially the colder weather! But the community here in Newcastle has been so welcoming and supportive, and it didn’t take me long to settle into northern life.

Recovery is key after an intense match or training session. I do everything I can to recover quickly. I catch up with friends, cook dinners, and watch TV to unwind. I also maintain my mental health by never getting too high with success or too low with failure. It’s all about staying balanced.

I wear infrared compression tights and compression socks for long flights, along with my favourite orange-flavoured electrolyte from GoFuelYourself. Staying connected with my family while moving is so important to me. I call them daily, and we usually talk about things unrelated to football, which helps me switch off mentally.

The most rewarding aspect of being a footballer is inspiring young fans and the next generation of female football talent. Before a game, I don’t have any superstitious rituals, but I’m good to go as long as I have my headphones and a cup of coffee!

I’d love to visit the Dominican Republic if I could travel anywhere. I imagine spending my days relaxing on the beach, reading, and soaking up the sun.

MUSIC

Fashion is a big part of my personality, and I enjoy exploring the fashion world while experimenting with classic and bold pieces. My style is simple yet versatile, and I also like to branch out with statement items. Right now, I love double denim—it can be dressed up or down. On the other hand, the socksabove-leggings trend isn’t for me!

For a lazy off day, you’ll find me in Lululemon. On rare occasions, I get to dress up, and I’ll pop into Zara and look for standout pieces to add to my wardrobe. Fashion is all about wearing what suits me and feeling confident, whether sporty or stylish.

Music is essential for me, especially during pre-game preparation. It’s one of the few things I need to prepare for a game. I love listening to remixes on SoundCloud, and Morgan Wallen is currently my favourite artist—I was lucky to meet him backstage last year!

On casual days, I wear wide-leg trousers, a knitted jumper, and trainers.

For formal events, I love a long dress paired with a blazer, a shirt with heeled boots, and a bold bag. My fashion sense allows me to express myself and feel comfortable on and off the field.

As a professional footballer, I’ve had the chance to travel to many places.

This preseason, we visited Utah, which was stunning. Training at high altitudes with mountains surrounding us was a surreal experience.

My go-to song is Ex-Factor by Lauryn Hill — it’s still a banger! I’d say my taste is pretty eclectic, but country music holds a special place in my playlist.

Balancing football, personal life, and downtime can be tricky, especially during the season when football takes priority. On my days off, I stay active with Pilates, padel, or long walks, which help me switch off mentally.

TEAM CAREER Paul: “I cherish the memories I made at two of the biggest clubs in the world. I remember arriving at Manchester United as a teenager and everything felt so big – it was a huge change. I learned a lot of lessons there which turned me from a boy into a man. It was a privilege to join Juventus. We shared so many incredible moments together. I have a special bond with fans from both clubs. The journey has been full of ups and downs but it has made me the person I am today.” ball: What have been the most defining moments of your club career?

Paul: “This is a tough one! Lifting trophies, making my professional debut at Manchester United, joining Juventus, scoring my first goal for each club… it’s hard to pick. The tough moments are important too, like the defeat in the Champions League final against Barcelona. A loss is always hard to accept and still stings today, but it teaches you so much and pushes me to be better.” ball: How has your relationship with your teammates evolved over the years?

Paul: “It’s funny as when you first start off you are friends, then you become competition and then friends again. You grow through your experiences together because you go through so much as a group. I love being in the dressing room.

I’ve made friends for life through football and consider them family.” ball: What are your goals for the remainder of the 2024/25 season?

Paul: “I want to get as fit as possible and return to playing football at the highest levels.”

“Everyone has been so important as you learn something different from each. My wife, my kids and my faith have also been a big part of this journey.” ball: How do you balance leadership and creativity on the pitch?

Paul: “I’m just being myself. I will give 100% to my team in order to win. I think this balance comes naturally to me, even though I would never consider myself a leader. Others have given me that title but I’ve always focused on being the best version of myself and helping my team-mates. This might be an example to others, but I just want to win.” ball: What does being back after the ban mean for your club career?

Paul: “I can get back to doing what I love and I look forward to the day when I can follow my dreams again. I want to be better than before and I work every day towards this.” ball: How do you approach challenges like injuries and setbacks with your clubs?

Paul: “The same way I’ve always faced every problem and challenge in life: trusting in my faith, believing in myself, having a positive mindset and working hard.” ball: Can you share a moment from your club career that you hold particularly close to your heart?

Paul: “Winning the FA Youth Cup with Manchester United alongside my boys Jesse Lingard, Ravel Morrison, Larnell Cole, Will Keane, Michael Keane…it was such a good group. This was my first trophy and it made me hungry for more and more silverware.”

ball: Who has had the biggest influence on your development as a player at club level?

ball: What do you want your legacy to be with the teams you’ve played for?

Paul: “Every coach has been different and brought something unique to my development not just as a player, but as a person.”

Paul: “I want to be remembered as a player that entertained, gave everything and loved every minute he was out on the pitch.”

Paul: “Representing my country is one of my biggest achievements. I grew up obsessing over players I saw at major international tournaments and to follow in their footsteps is something I’m so proud of. I remember that first call-up and being a few doors down at our training camp from Karim Benzema – I watched him on TV, you know? I will never forget that feeling.” ball: How did winning the 2018 World Cup change your perspective on football and life?

Paul: “It made me hungry for more and more. It made me want to win every medal and trophy out there. Once you achieve your lifelong ambition, you just want more and more. Lifting that special trophy is the proudest football

moment in my life and to have my family there in the stands to witness everything made it even better. It was the best.” ball: Who do you look up to among past or present French football legends?

Paul: “There are so many to mention and it’s hard to pick so sorry if I forget anyone! Zizou, Titi… the whole 1998 team that won the World Cup. There are too many great players to name them all.” ball: How do you see the current generation of French talent shaping the future of football?

Paul: “They are exciting and I’m a big fan of them already. I can’t wait to see how they further develop and win a future World Cup – hopefully with me as a team-mate!”

ball: How do you handle the pressure of playing for a team with such high expectations?

Paul: “That’s football. It’s the same game no matter the situation. I see it as the same game wherever I play and I hold myself to the highest standards regardless. I’m very competitive no matter what I’m playing, whether that be babyfoot, billiards or even Ludo – just ask my friends! I want to win. I take this mentality into every game.” ball. Can you share any behindthe-scenes moments from the 2018 World Cup campaign?

Paul: “I will tell you a story. We had just beaten Argentina and we all went to dinner. We came back, had some time off that evening and Adil Rami got hold of a fire extinguisher and let it off. Of course, the fire alarm goes off and we all had to go outside: the players, the management, the staff…

I mean everyone. The firemen arrived and everything. They had to go in and do their checks before later saying: ‘OK, you can come in’. It was super late. We laugh about it now.” ball: What is your relationship like with coach Didier Deschamps?

Paul: “Didier has been a hugely important person in my life. Not only is he an excellent manager, but he has been a father figure, coach, confidant and sometimes a therapist for me.

We’ve achieved so much together and have made very special memories.” ball: How do you envision the next phase of your international career?

Paul: “I want to get back playing at the highest levels and return to the national team. I know it won’t be easy as there is a lot of competition and some great players in the squad.

There are players that deserve to be in the team right now and I have to earn my place again.”

ball: How did your passion for fashion begin?

Paul: “It comes down to me wanting to be creative and loving style – it comes hand in hand. The way I dress is similar to the way I play football too. I want to create; I want to be different.” ball: Who are your biggest influences in the fashion world?

Paul: “I don’t really have one. There are styles that I like, but I try to stay true to myself. I like Pharrell Williams, but it’s not like I’m inspired by him to dress the way that I do. Odell Beckham Jr. is someone I like to see too because we kind of have the same style.” ball: How would you describe your style in three words?

Paul: “It would be class, different and unique.” ball: How do you balance fashion and football—two demanding industries?

Paul: “It’s not really a balance – football is my passion and profession, while fashion is something that is an interest and a hobby I have outside of the game.

Football is my priority and what I’ve always wanted to do with my life.” ball: Are there any brands or designers you dream of collaborating with in the future?

Paul: “Yes. I would love to do a collaboration with AMIRI or Louis Vuitton by Pharrell Williams.

Paul: “For me, the way I dress is a reflection of myself in every sense.

It represents who I am, what I’ve been through, how I’m feeling… many things.” ball: Can you tell us about your favourite outfit or look and why it stands out?

Paul: “This is a tough one as it really depends on what I’m doing, what is going on, where I am – a lot of things.

I’m a dad now so my style has changed – it’s always changing. Sometimes I can wear a suit or sometimes sweatpants with a nice shirt and a hat in the evenings… I basically change a lot so a favourite is hard to pick. I would say that I’m less flashy and more into details. Shoes always make the difference.” ball: Are you working on any fashion projects we should look forward to?

Paul: “I’ve definitely got ideas but nothing to share just yet. I recently collaborated with CHIMI to launch a custom eyewear collection. We wanted to embrace my experience at the time and represent both the good and the bad. I really enjoyed working with CHIMI and wanted to show our opposing states of mind, moods, and feelings.

This was important for me to be represented in the design.” ball: What advice do you have for young athletes looking to express themselves through fashion?

Paul: “Be free, be different but be yourself.”

Paul: “We all have our ups and downs and need support at times. Not everybody that is there when things are going well will be there for you when things go against you. It helped me grow as a man and I see life differently.” ball: How did you stay motivated and sharp away from competitive football?

Paul: “That’s just me as a person – I want to be the best version of myself no matter what. I train every day and I’m pushing myself to come back stronger than ever before. I kept my faith throughout and I can’t wait to get back playing.” ball: How have your fans supported you through this difficult time?

Paul: “Even in the most difficult moments, the support I’ve had from fans around the world has meant a lot and I can’t thank them enough. They have been amazing. It has been so nice seeing their messages of support throughout this time and they have been a big motivation for me to come back stronger.” ball: Do you feel a stigma attached to returning from a ban, and how do you plan to overcome it?

Paul: “I don’t feel anything. Maybe others do towards me, but I know I didn’t do anything intentionally wrong and that was made clear by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Everything is there in the Court of Arbitration for Sport’s decision and it explains everything. I’m focused on myself and I just want to get back playing.”

ball: What’s the first thing you look forward to doing when your ban is officially lifted?

Paul: “I can’t wait to step back out onto the pitch for my next club – I’m so excited for this moment.” ball: How has your perspective on football changed after this enforced break?

Paul: “I’ve missed it. This time away has reinforced my love for the sport and doing what I love. It’s the same player, but with even more determination and hunger.” ball: How do you hope to inspire others with your comeback?

Paul: “I hope no one has to go through what I went through but if my story can serve to inspire others in difficult moments, I think that’s a positive from a negative situation.”

You’ve got a fascinating background — a father who’s a famous boxer, only 16 years old and a full-time tennis player living in Spain. Could you take us back to the beginning and give us a sense of how it all started?

Cassius: “Absolutely. I was born in North Cyprus in 2008 when my dad lived and trained there during his first world title fights. Even though I was just a baby, that laid-back Mediterranean vibe soaked into my DNA! We moved to Beckenham in South London when I was a toddler, so I spent my childhood running around the house with my younger sister Sienna and little brother Kingston, constantly kicking footballs around the garden and being in that whirlwind of activity you get from a sporting family. My parents were (and still are) incredibly health-conscious — my dad with his boxing, my mum with her daily addiction to spin classes and yoga.

Beginnings and Early Influences ball. Tennis wasn’t initially the family’s primary sport. What sparked your interest in tennis, and how did you begin your journey?

Cassius: “Funny enough, boxing was front and centre in our house. My dad would be watching fight footage or training. But tennis caught my eye when I was about four. I’d see other kids hitting on the local courts, and something about that one-on-one battle really spoke to me. My parents saw how keen I was and enrolled me in Park Langley Tennis Club lessons.

That’s where I started with sponge balls and mini nets under coaches like Matt Healey and later Harry Bushnell.

I also played football and loved it for a while, but tennis is where I truly excelled. I enjoyed the pressure and physical side; I’ve always been fast around the court to get to most balls.

But it’s the no excuses and no blaming teammates if you lose, which I liked!”

The Reed’s School Chapter

ball. Was there a pivotal moment when you realised tennis could be more than just a hobby?

ball. You mentioned Reed’s School.

What was it like there, and how did it shape you?

Cassius: “When I was 11, I got the call to represent Great Britain in the Winter Cup. That felt huge — like the first big recognition of my potential.

I’d been working hard at training, but suddenly, having “GB” next to my name in a proper event made me think, “I could really make a career out of this.” Around that time, we moved to Cobham in Surrey so I could attend Reed’s School, which has a proper tennis programme. We even had a court at home, so if I wasn’t on the courts at school, I was hitting serves in the back garden until my mum called me in for dinner. I was so lucky to have a court at home, as throughout COVID, during that crazy summer, it was tennis all day. There was nothing else to do, I really improved over that covid period.”

Cassius: “Reed’s was amazing. The setup is designed for serious players— fewer subjects; I did 6 GCSEs, not the 8 or 9 other kids did. Instead, I’d do tennis lessons during school time. I’d do about three hours of tennis a day, plus some fitness work. Even though our house was just around the corner, I boarded there because being fully immersed helped me stay focused. My coach at Reed’s, Ben Haran, was really good for me drilling my technique. He was meticulous, making me repeat certain shots countless times until it was spot on. It was intense, but I loved it. I also enjoyed playing in national school competitions with my mates. We won three National School Championships together, which is a massive achievement, especially when it’s with all my mates from school.”

ball. Did you ever cross paths with any other rising stars while you were at Reed’s or around Bromley?

Cassius: “Yeah, I did. I trained at Bromley Tennis Centre when I was younger, and you’d see many players coming through. Emma Raducanu was a few years older than me, but I remember hitting on a court next to hers and thinking, “She’s amazing!.”

Harry Bushnell, who coached me when I was little, also worked with Emma. Watching her rise has been really inspiring—she’s shown that big dreams can become reality with the right mindset and dedication.”

Celebrity Encounters and Big Influences

ball. Your dad’s had a glittering boxing career, and you’ve also spent time with well-known sporting figures and celebrities. Which encounters stand out?

Cassius: “There have been so many.

For example, when meeting Boris Becker, my dad and I went to his house, which was really nice. He talked about technique and strategy, took me to the national tennis centre, and put me through my paces for a few hours. I still keep a photo of us on my wall.”

“I also trained several times at the Bob Brett Academy in San Remo, Italy. Bob coached Marin Čilić and even Novak Djokovic in his early days.

Learning from him was mind-blowing; he’d break down a single shot for half an hour, ensuring every tiny detail was perfect.”

“I’ve also met Gaël Monfils. Growing up, I’d watch his highlights on YouTube — nobody does flair like Monfils! Nick Kyrgios is another player I love. His entertainment value is off the charts, and I see bits of my explosiveness in him. I’m a massive fan of that “electric but unpredictable” style of play. I’ve been told I’ve got a bit of Kyrgios in me, which I take as a big compliment.” ball. Let’s not forget your dad’s world. Are there any favourite boxers besides him?

Cassius: “Oh! Roy Jones Jr, Prince Naseem Hamed, and Floyd Mayweather top my list. Roy Jones Jr’s knockout reel is insane, and Prince Naseem’s showboating was legendary.

Mayweather’s 50-0 record speaks for itself. I love the technical brilliance. It’s been fun comparing boxing to tennis.

Both are individual sports that require mental resilience and strategy. My dad’s experience has been a massive help in that regard.”

Moving to Spain and the Next Level ball. In August 2024, you moved to train full-time in Spain. How has that transition been?

Cassius: “It’s a whole new world training in Spain. The Ferrer Tennis Academy close to Alicante is my base, and the schedule is intense — six hours a day, five days a week, plus a lighter 3-hour session on Saturdays.

The heat was brutal at first. You’re sweating buckets on those clay courts, and you’ve got to stay hydrated and fuelled with around 5,000 to 6,000 calories a day. But I’ve adapted and become so much stronger for it. The Spanish players are unbelievably fit.

They’ll rally for hours without blinking, so it’s an ideal environment to push yourself.”

a quick 20-minute flight to Ibiza to meet my dad and uncle Dizzee Rascal for Dizzee’s 40th birthday. We spent a couple of days on a yacht, celebrating life, and in the evening, we watched Anthony Joshua fight Daniel Dubois that night. Everyone was shocked at AJ getting destroyed like that; it was a crazy night. Moments like that with successful people who’ve achieved big things in their lives remind me why I’m putting in all these hours.”

Cassius: “Andrew’s brilliant. He’s got this no-nonsense approach that I respect. If I’m slacking or not focusing, he lets me know.”

My Spanish is coming along (though I’m nowhere near fluent!), and I’ve embraced the heat and being covered head-to-toe in clay. My parents like going to Spain, so they pop over from time to time. After a recent tournament in Barcelona — where I reached the semi-finals in the under18s — I took the weekend off and got

THE ARCTIC OPEN

The sun doesn’t really set in Akureyri at this time of year. At 2am, it dips down to the horizon in the mouth of the fjord, rolls like a putt along the surface of the water and then rises again without threat of darkness.

I’ve played in a lot of golf tournaments but none quite like this. At The Arctic Open the tee times run from 10am11pm, which means the final groups sign their cards around the same time the teenagers leave the local nightclub. We’re playing in groups of 4: a mixture of gender, age and handicap.

In two days time, the 38th Arctic Open Champion will be crowned based on the best nett stableford score.

I’d always dreamed of playing in The Open, but the Icelandic version sounds a little more fun.

I’m jaded from a late night of playing at Brautarholt Golf Course, but a 45 minute nap on the flight north from Reykjavik has given me a fighting chance. I’m as far north on the globe as I’ve ever been, in a country I’ve never been to, in a town I’ve never heard of; this is an away game like no other. Rumours of impressive winning 118

scores from years gone by circulate amongst the group. I fear I might be heading into the Icelandic golfing gauntlet. Perhaps these are a group of avid golfers so busy with the demands of survival in the mountains that they failed to realise they are golfing prodigies.

We arrive at the clubhouse and I immediately get a clearer sense of what’s to come. People are rushing in the front door, which is flanked by Icelandair sponsorship flags, to enjoy the pre tournament buffet and hear the schedule for the coming days.

There’s a group of 6 wearing red and white panelled long sleeve tee shirts with Canadian flags on the back.

Brushing past them are polo shirts emblazoned with stars and stripes.

The novelty shirts are sparse in comparison to the large, mostly blonde, all attractive, Nordic looking people packed shoulder to shoulder in the hall of the quaint clubhouse.

The speaker taps the microphone to gain our attention, a booming voice penetrates the room: “Dömur og herrar, velkomin á Arctic Open.” I get the gist.

Iceland is obsessed with golf. The country has the most number of golf courses per capita in the entire world (roughly 65 golf courses for roughly 320,000 inhabitants). The sport falls just behind football and handball as the most popular in the country with over 10% of the population taking to the fairways.

With such a short season, locals can only play 4 months of the year, which means the fervour is concentrated.

Bogi Nils, my ironically named Icelandic host and CEO of Icelandair, says that the 20 golf courses around Reykjavik simply aren’t enough to bolster demand: they need to build more. The lively turn out for the Arctic Open becomes a little more clear.

I warm up by hitting some golf balls from the top of a soviet style concrete driving range before heading to the first tee. My playing partners have clocked on to the fact that I used to play professionally. Questions like ‘So how many are you going to win by?’ are delivered like compliments and received like a sobering swig of pressure.

The golf course itself is very close to what I expected. Fairways are lined with pine trees giving way to arid snow capped mountains that tower over the perimeter at every angle. The fairways are lush and green with patches of scruffiness. Summer arrived a little late this year in Iceland, two weeks previous a flurry of bad weather covered the entire golf course in 3 inches of snow. But you wouldn’t know it now. The sun has crept through the clouds and the glint from the mountain tops is expelling a wash of white brightness over the course.

Standing on the 4th encapsulates everything I thought golf in Iceland would be. A short par 3 takes us over a water hazard. Behind the green is a dense thicket of dark green pines, hugged at their base by the iconic purple-blue Alaskan Lupin plant. A bright red sign directs us off stage to the right, up a winding path between two Flintstone style boulders.

The tone of the round is refreshing, halfway breaks for sodid braud (lamb with bread), hot chocolate with Stroh (spiced rum) and cinnamon buns parse out the stresses of the round into digestible chunks. The golfers in the group strike a balance between competition, support and socialising: there’s quiet when others are playing their shots, but in between there’s little consideration for a golf tournament. We meander through the pines until we eventually reach the 18th and tally up our totals.

Since we teed off at a respectable hour we finished in time for dinner.

Our watering hole for the evening is down the hill in the small harbour town. The typical duo of sushi followed by lamb and potatoes with red wine fills the gap created by a day on the course. Much of the party ventures forth into the bright night, but the golf obsessed among us are hungry for something else.

40 minutes north of Akureyri is the town of Husavik, where a small 9 hole golf course sits at the base of a purple valley. I’m conscious that the offer to play there is an act of politeness from our hosts. I look into Bogi and Gisli’s eyes to establish the sincerity of their offer and find nothing but optimism.

I’m in good hands: these guys are obsessed. There must be something in the water here.

What inspired you to pursue a career in football?

“I was always a fan of football growing up. With a lot of hard work and luck, I’ve lived my dream of making what I love most in this world a full-time job.

Never a day goes by where I don’t think about how fortunate I am to be doing what so many young children dream of doing.”

Can you describe your journey to becoming a professional footballer?

“My Journey to becoming a professional football player was never easy; I grew up as an immigrant in Spain, which was very difficult to adapt to because of the racism that we had against us. Even though I loved football at that age, I found it hard to fit in with others, and often, I’d be left playing by myself, kicking the ball at the wall. Also, living in Southeast London (Peckham) was not easy because of how dangerous it was then. My flat building would be full of drug dealers, murderers, and fraudsters.”

“I was just a boy who was trying to reach his dreams. My family, especially my parents, played a massive part in keeping me concentrated and never taking the wrong route. They were my pillars of strength, always there to support and guide me. So, I would say that my journey hasn’t been easy.

Everyone has their own stories, but 124

for me, what I’ve been through always makes me grounded. I try to use my struggles as a source of motivation and fuel to perform.”

Who were your football idols growing up, and how did they influence your style of play?

“Football idols would be Neymar, Cristiano and Ronaldinho. The flair, the skill, the joga bonito. I watch their clips before games to motivate me and feel confident to also play like that.”

What do you consider your greatest strength as a footballer?

“My greatest strength is my dribbling.

My ability to drive at players with skill and also get out of tight spaces.”

How do you handle the pressures of playing at an elite level?

“I always try to remain positive in any situation. Any pressure I try to make motivates me to do even better.”

Could you walk us through your daily training routine?

“I get in early for some treatment to start my day, and then I hop in the

reformer, which I find helpful before training and recovery. I head to training, and once that’s done, I go again for another massage, hot and cold, and fuel up. The routine is essential; sticking to it has got me to where I am today.”

What’s the most memorable match you’ve played in so far?

“My most memorable match has got to be my debut at the World Cup 2022. It was a dream come true to play for and represent your country on the world’s biggest stage, with billions of people worldwide watching.

I’ll never forget that moment.”

How did it feel to represent Ecuador at the international level?

“Representing Ecuador is always an honour, mainly because it’s my Parents’ country. The pride I feel when I wear the ‘La Tri’ colours is indescribable, and I cherish it every time I’m lucky enough to do so.”

What are your personal goals for the upcoming season?

How do you prepare mentally for a big game?

“My personal goals this season are not just aspirations; they are my driving force. I aim to get promoted to my team and continue to improve.

The promotion with Ipswich Town last season was an incredible moment with a brilliant group of lads, and I’m confident that we can do the same thing this year at Burnley.”

“Just being myself. I like to do things that make me feel good, like spending time with my family, listening to music, and dancing. Then, when it’s game time, it’s time to lock in, and my entire focus is on the match, giving my best and helping my teammates along the way.”

What has been the biggest challenge of your career so far?

“My biggest challenge has been my injury when I was 19. Everything came so quickly to me. I was living every boy’s dream, and it all changed when I pulled my hamstring. It was a significant setback, but I learned a lot throughout. It got complicated, and I started questioning things, but my family, with their unwavering support, helped me get through it.”

“I recommend using my left foot the same as my right. Off-the-ball work like forward runs, and positioning is something key for me this year.”

How do you recover physically and mentally after a tough match?

“After a tough match, I try to recover immediately and do as much as possible to feel better the next day.

That includes massages, hot and cold treatments, and compression boots.

Spending time with my family after the game helps me a lot, too, as I can switch off and decompress from football.”

What do you think makes a player stand out at the international level?

“Consistency is key. There are so many incredibly talented players, but the elite ones are the guys doing it every single week. You just have to look at the numbers that Ronaldo and Messi put up for well over a decade, and they never let it slip.”

How do you adapt to playing in different positions or roles within a team?

“As a kid, I’ve always been a versatile player, so I don’t have much difficulty.

I’ve played everywhere across the

topline, even fullback, so as long as I can play, anywhere in the frontline is good for me. However, I like the number 10 role as it gives me the most freedom to do what I do best.”

SQUASH DREAMERS “Before Squash Dreamers, my life was empty. I used to go to school and come home, I wouldn’t bother studying.

This made me sad but there was no motivation to make me change.”

Farah is 15. She was born in Syria but her family fled the war and she now lives in east Amman.

She attends a government school that runs on a shift system, which means she gets just two hours of schooling a day, in a class that can sometimes reach sixty pupils to one teacher.

“If I didn’t have Squash Dreamers, I would be married now, with my own children.”

Like many other girls her age, she is at risk of early marriage and leaving school before graduation. Over forty per cent of Syrian girls over the age of 12 are not in school. Now, Farah dreams of being a social worker.

Farah is one of the fifty four girls who take part in Squash Dreamers’ long term holistic programming. We work with refugee and underserved girls from the age of 8 up until they turn 18, empowering them through sports, education and wellbeing support.

The programme consists of four weekly sessions at our centre in east Amman, where the girls have a formal English lesson, a conversation class, a fitness session and a hot meal. They also have the opportunity to get help with any homework they have, or revise for upcoming exams. In addition to these sessions, they also attend weekly professional squash training with our coaches, and we support committed, high-achieving girls to play in tournaments, and access coaching qualifications.

The holistic approach means our girls are able to develop both academically and personally. Sport is a life changing experience for everyone, but particularly for girls who have limited spaces to run, play, and thrive. It also enhances their future education and career opportunities - schools and universities

seek out talented players for their squash teams, and many girls can train as coaches and empower the next generation.

The successes are tangible. Last year, seven girls in the programme were offered full scholarships to study at UK based summer schools, and several are now in the process of applying for US private schools.
