SALVETE OMNES! It's almost time for State Convention again! In this issue, not only will you find a recap of the 8th Annual Yale Certamen and photos from our card-making sessions, but also a fully fleshed-out guide to State Convention. While not comprehensive, hopefully this guide will help out any newbies attending their first WJCL Convention. Other than that, your officers have been hard at work prepping for State: Historians Amanda Roessler and Reena Singhal began planning the concept for their scrapbook in November, while Spirit Officers Arushi Dhingra and Katherine Hearden have started constructing props for use in Spirit this year. The War Machine nearly complete, and this issue of the Quinque Stellae is on path to be the longest yet. Don't get us wrong, there's still a lot to do before Convention, but we're on track to make it a great one! AB IMIS PECTORIS, Nicholas Chang and Reena Singhal

Note: The views expressed in this publication do not necessarily those of the BA Latin Club, its officers, its sponsors, or Brookfield Academy.

Yale Certamen 2018 By Nicholas Chang

To most people, a rainy weekend in Connecticut sounds like a boring vacation. But for twelve members of the Brookfield Academy Upper School, there was no better place to be. BA's three Upper School Certamen teams (one Intermediate and two Advanced) arrived in Connecticut two days before the 2018 Yale Invitational Certamen, prepared to compete against prestigious teams from Florida, Illinois, Virginia, and Massachusetts. Following an eventful few days featuring a charismatic security robot at LaGuardia Airport, a riveting foray out to a local Walmart, and substitution scrambled eggs, BA's teams made the trek into Cambridge. After a brief presentation by Professor Milette Gaifman, players reported to various rooms for the tournament. Our Intermediate team, composed of Lily Childress, Sam Simic, Ronit Gupta, and Emma Canga, began playing first, along with some nov-

ice teams from BA's middle school. These preliminary rounds were marked by some remarkable buzzes; our Intermediate team and two of our novice teams advanced to the semifinals. After lunch, Advanced rounds began. While advancedlevel rounds can prove to be difficult, our teams pulled through.

After playing Dante Minutillo, the star grammarian and literature player for Boston Latin School, our Advanced A Team advanced to the semifinals. "Tossup Fourteen," says the moderator. "Let's get this bread." The room bursts into laughter. Kyle Jain wakes up from his passage-induced nap. Niels Armbruster hits his buzzer. The semifinals are underway. The semifinals were a mixed bag for Brookfield Academy's teams. All three of our Novice teams made it to the semis, but none made it past the intense direct-elimination rounds. Our Intermediates faced off against teams from Harriton and Boston Latin School, home to some of the most prestigious Certamen players in the nation. The round was extremely difficult, and our team eventually succumbed BLS. It was a different story in the Advanced Division. While the Advanced B team didn't advance to the semis, our A team played against DuxburyWilmington and Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Tech-

nology. The round was filled with iconic questions, such as the aforementioned "Let's get this bread." Our Advanced A Team progressed to the finals. In the finals, BA's Advanced A team fought both Matthew Thomas of Bradenton, Florida, a national champion, and BLS A, again with fluent Latin speaker Dante Minutillo as Captain. The round was intense, with Junior Kyle Jain challenging Minutillo for the title of MVP. Going into the final tossup, Brookfield was ahead by five points. However, though our team defeated Thomas, we fell to BLS on the final question.

Salvete Omnes! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday break. In celebration of the season of Saturnalia we have a special holiday treat for you! As many of you know Dormice were a delicacy in Ancient Rome. However, it seems dormice aren't such a favorite food these days. So, if you want to celebrate like an ancient Roman without having to eat actual mice, you can follow this recipe to make Pastry Dormice.

Ingredients -Twinkies -Twizzlers (Pull'n'Peel) -White Icing -Black Icing -Caramel

Step I:

Prepare your ingredients and unwrap a Twinkie

Step II:

Using the white icing, make two ovals on each side on the Twinkie (as shown bellow)

Saturnalia!

8

Step 111:

Use the black icing to draw eyes, a nose and whiskers on one end of the Twinkie

Step IV:

Cut one of the caramels into fourths, then take one of the fourths and roll it into a small ball

Special Thanks to all the members who came in to make Holiday cards for terminally ill kids!

Step V:

Flatten the caramel balls into small disks and attach them to the Twinkie (as shown bellow)

Step VI:

Peel off a strand from the licorice and cut it to the desired length, then attach it to your Twinkie

INTRODUCTION WJCL EDITOR VICTORIA TOLEDO IT'S CURRENTLY ONE OF THE BEST TIMES OF THE YEAR. ALTHOUGH IT'S A ROUGH TRANSITION FROM CHRIST-MAS BREAK BACK INTO SCHOOL, STATE CONVENTION IS RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. AS A SENIOR, I HAVE MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THE COMING CONVENTION. I AM

WJCL EDITOR VICTORIA TOLEDO THE WJCL EDITOR, MEANING I HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES AND EVENTS TO HELP MANAGE DURING CONVENTION, FILLING ME WITH SOMETHING LIKE ANXIETY. NEXT, I HAVE EXCITEMENT FOR A WEEKEND FULL OF LATIN CHEERS, FRIENDS NEW AND OLD, AND EXPERIENCES THAT I WILL REMEMBER FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE. TO TOP IF ALL OFF, I AM OVERWHELMED BY NOSTALGIA.

THIS MAY SOUND CLICHE, BUT IT DOES TRULY FEEL AS IF I WERE THAT GAWKY FRESHMAN STUMBLING THROUGH HER FIRST STATE CONVENTION MERELY A YEAR AGO. HERE I AM NOW, SIMILARLY GAWKY BUT A LITTLE MORE CONFIDENT AS I APPROACH MY FINAL STATE CONVENTION. FROM THE TIMES I SCREAMED BA CHEERS AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS TO FEELING ANXIOUS DURING CERTAMEN FINALS TO DANCING WITH MY CLOSEST FRIENDS, I CAN PROUDLY SAY THAT STATE CONVENTION WAS LIFE-CHANGING AND REMARKABLE. CONVENTION IS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE THROUGH WHICH YOU CAN DISCOVER MORE OF YOURSELF, SUCH AS YOUR ABILITY TO WITHSTAND MINIMAL SLEEP OR YOUR CAPACITY TO BECOME MORE OPEN, FUN, AND CONFIDENT IN YOURSELF. TO EVERYONE WHO HAS THEIR FIRST CONVENTION THIS YEAR, I EARNESTLY HOPE YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF EVERY SINGLE SECOND TO MAKE MEMORIES WITH YOUR FRIENDS, AND TO EVERYONE WHO HAS EXPERIENCED THIS WHIRLWIND PROGRAM, YOU KNOW THE DRILL. I HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL IN MADISON AT THE END OF JANUARY.

"LATIN CONVENTION IS NOT JUST ABOUT A BUNCH OF NERDS TAKING TESTS AND PLAYING CERTAMEN. LATIN CONVENTION IS ALSO ABOUT YELLBAJCL Spirit Officer Arushi Dhingra and WJCL Parliamentarian Simran Khunger during Meet the ING CHEERS IN A ROOM FULL Candidates at the 2018 WJCL Convention OF 400 PEOPLE. SPIRIT HAS AL(Photo: Alisha Khosla) WAYS BEEN MY FAVORITE PART OF CONVENTION. WHETHER IT BE THE OUTFITS I GET TO MAKE OR LEADING THE CHEERS FOR THE SCHOOL, I CAN EXPRESS MY CREATIVITY AND HAVE SO MUCH FUN DOING IT. SPIRIT AT LATIN CONVENTION IS BASICALLY WHEN HUNDREDS OF PEO-PLE GATHER IN A ROOM SHOUTING WORDS IN LATIN DRESSED UP IN AMAZING COSTUMES. SPIRIT IS THE 20 MINUTES BEFORE EVERY GA WHERE EVERYONE LOSES THEIR VOICES. SPIRIT AT CONVENTION HAS ALLOWED ME TO MEET SO MANY AMAZING PEOPLE FROM ALL OVER AND HAS RESULTED IN ONE OF THE BEST EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE."
