In November 2019, four Brookfield Academy teams to competed at the annual Yale Invitational Certamen tournament. Two teams competed in the novice division, one in the intermediate division, and one in the advanced division. Middle schoolers Ayushi Chandal, Anvesha Guru, Allison Hieb, and Krish Sharma, and Leo Chen, Kishore Mohanram, Solyana Tatek, and Riya Vijayapal comprised the novice teams. The intermediate team comprised of Hena Allaqaband, Riya Singh, Charlie Hieb, and Alex Li. Meanwhile, Ali Warraich, Kyle Jain, Ronit Gupta, and Emma Canga represented BA in the advanced category.

In addition, Pranav Gogineni also competed on a mixed team with Marquette High School and Homestead Highschool. The three preliminary rounds went fantastically and all four BA teams and the combined team made it into the semifinals. Each team played impressively in this elimination round and our novice team 1 and advanced team won their rounds to continue into the finals. The novice team faced (teams 1, 2) and the advanced team faced BASIS DC (DC) and Boston Latin School 1 (MA).

After suspenseful and intense finals rounds, the novice team took first place and the advanced placed second. (transition) to the overall win in each division, one player from each of the three finals rounds receives the MVP award based on their individual performance and scoring in the finals round. Krish Sharma, from the winning novice team, received this award. Overall, BA had a successful tournament at Yale University. All players on all teams played extremely well; the hard work paid off. The tournament allows for a great experience and a treasured opportunity for BA latin students and we hope to return next year!

"A NEW RELIGIOUS MOVEMENT BORN OUT OF THE 2019 NJCL CONVENTION."

The 2019 NJCL Convention was filled with interesting and iconic moments unique to each individual, school, and state. However, among the thousandor-so delegates in attendance, one experience was shared by all: the glory and beauty of the Fargodome. NDSU’s sports facility (and the bison housed within) captured the hearts and minds of delegates from across the nation for the duration of that fateful week, and became the butt of many convention jokes. On August 15th, a few weeks following the close of that convention, @fargodomism made its first post on Instagram. From there, the account gained traction throughout the JCL, promoting the spread of a religion of the same name based on a deep respect instilled unto JCLers for the hypnotic properties of the Fargodome. From there, the account called for applications to fill its religious hierarchy, which consists of an anonymous “Queen Bee” that steers the movement, followed by High Bison, withWorker Bees at the less powerful end of the spectrum. The future plans of the organization remain confidential, though the message of the group appears to be focused around not only promoting the worship of the Fargodome and “Lord Bison,” but also to advocate for the rights of grasses and to sponsor a societal shift away from dependence on technology (exemplified by the messages “don’t trod on the sod” and “please silence your phone” posted in the account’s biography).
