03 SALVETE OMNES! Just like that, another year has passed for the BAJCL. The 2018-2019 school year has had its ups and downs, but I'm glad to say that we all came out unscathed. In a few short weeks, members of our club will be attending the NJCL's annual convention, this year hosted by North Dakota State University. Members have already started preparing for National Certamen, officers have begun staging props and materials for our activities, and delegates have been active in planning at the state level. Finally, I am proud to announce that we will be adding Emma Canga, our 2019-2020 Historian, as a Junior Editor this coming fall. I'm excited for what our delegation has to offer, and eager to continue to improve our publication in the coming year. Throughout the week, each student looks out for connections to the Roman culture, mythology, government, and language in our other classes, books we read, movies we see, monuments and museums we visit, and places we travel. “It’s important to be able to bring the current culture into the classroom even as we are studying the ancient classics,” says our Magistra. “It makes what you learn more meaningful.”

Latin Moments are a beloved and productive component of Homestead’s Latin classes. We would love to encourage other Latin programs to adopt our tradition. general assemblies.

During National Convention, you will attend a handful of mandatory general assemblies (GAs). During these assemblies, announcements are made, candidates give speeches, NJCL officers will deliver reports, and different speakers from across the country will address the convention.

spirit. Before each General Assembly (GA), state delegations will convene at their fellowship rooms and distribute props for spirit. Spirit is a contest of enthusiasm. Once state delegations reach the assembly hall, they begin to cheer and march to their places. As a member of the BA Latin Club, you'll attend Nationals as a part of the WJCL delegation and learn iconic cheers such as "Marquette Gibberish" and "Noster Bos." In addition to these staple cheers, each day there is a specific theme for spirit based on the university hosting the convention or the national theme.

ludi.

Another big part of National Convention are the ludi, or games. Wisconsin is even known as "the LUDI State" by some because of our great performance and our iconic red Ludi jerseys. The Convention typically offers singular events track, field, marathon, and swimming, with team events in basketball, soccer, volleyball, and Ultimate Frisbee. Teams are chosen during fellowships. NB: Ludi Chess is also offered!

testing.

Ahh, yes. The real reason everyone goes to convention: to take lots of tests. The NJCL offers about twenty different tests that you can take, ranging from geography to Classical Greek. While the tests may seem daunting, it is actually very easy to place on some of the more obscure ones with some studying. There's a wealth of resources listed on the WJCL site.

certamen.

The infamous Certamen. If you didn't know already, Certamen is a Jeopardy-style team quiz bowl in which players from across the country buzz in against each other for the chance to answer questions about Latin Language and Literature, Roman History, and Classical Mythology. In order to play Certamen at nationals, one must attend WJCL-sanctioned tryouts over the summer. Teams will be picked before nationals where you'll compete against great players from Texas, Massachusetts, Florida, Virginia, and other states.

the twenty-nineteen national junior classical league annual convention will take place at north dakota state university in fargo, north dakota. 11
