Special motor with 10-ton rotor for steel mill

By provisioning preventative maintenance programs in good time, plant operators avoid costly downtimes. This is all the more important for nonstandard configurations. An Argentinian steel mill operator commissioned Menzel Elektromotoren to build a special motor based on an existing motor having the type of construction IM 7311. In order to future-proof and since this is a considerable investment, the old, still operational motor is to be stored as backup. Therefore, the new machine must replicate it in every detail, although, due to modern design techniques, Menzel implemented a performance increase at the customer’s request. The new slip ring motor provides a nominal torque of 43,245Nm at 6,600V rated voltage and 1,345kW rated power. The format is unusual: at a total weight of 21.9 tons, the rotor alone weighs full 10.4 tons. Various accessories were installed, including HALL effect current transformers to measure the rotor current, customer-specified accelerometers on the bearings, and a level sensor for the electrolyte in the starter. The motor features IP23

protection and IC 01 cooling (opencircuit ventilation). It has to withstand ambient temperatures up to 45°C in the rolling mill. The German, family-run company counts special motors among its core business and also designed the starter in such a way that it caters for the new motor and the original one equally. Before shipping, the motor underwent a complete type test with additional tests according to customer specifications, including partial discharge and dissipation factor measurement (tan δ). Menzel will also handle the mill drive commissioning, which the operator will schedule to suit production planning.

The US Government has just issued a policy paper on plastics pollution

The US government has launched a new policy paper entitled ‘Mobilizing Federal Action on Plastic Pollution: Progress, Principles and Priorities’ in which the US government details the current challenge facing law makers.

Schubert is clearly maintaining its leading role in the packaging industry – with steady growth for the thirteenth year in a row, even under very difficult market conditions. The Schubert Group has also continued its growth trend with an estimated overall performance of

400 million euros. The Group now has around 1,700 employees, of whom some 1,200 work for Gerhard Schubert GmbH in Crailsheim. Despite a shortage of skilled labour, the company succeeded in increasing its core workforce and, with the help of increased productivity, successfully processed 2023’s high order volume. Production and assembly capacities have also been fully utilised so far this year and the order books are full until 2025. This is an extremely favourable starting position for innovative product developments, especially as the budget for research and development in 2024 is once again the largest single budget, representing 9% of overall performance.

Visit: www.schubert.group

The paper states, “Plastic production around the globe has doubled over the past two decades. Plastic waste has also doubled in that time, and is now found almost everywhere on our planet, from floating garbage patches in the Pacific Ocean to nearly every waterline, coastline, and shoreline, including beaches and riverbanks.

Plastics are turning up in the stomachs of whales, birds, and other animals that ingest them. Communities near plastic production and processing facilities are confronted with toxic air emissions and chemical releases. Researchers are sounding alarm bells over the growing presence of microplastics in the human

body and are concerned that the ingestion of microplastics and exposure to plastics-related pollution are posing a growing risk to public health."

The problem is clearly the plastic which gets out into the open environment, from which it cannot realistically be collected for recycling, composting, or anything else.

According to Michael Laurier, CEO of Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc, “The simplistic solution is to ban plastics, but plastic cannot and should not for the foreseeable future be banned, as it is in many cases the best material for the job.”

In this issue of Industrial Process News, we are pleased to feature Advanced Rework Technology Ltd (ART Ltd) as our IPC Training Company of the Month.

IPC is a global organisation that sits on the World Electronics Council and helps develop industry standards that ensure the reliability, quality, and performance of electronic components and assemblies.

IPC Training is essential for industry professionals involved in the design, manufacturing, and assembly of electronic products because it helps companies and individuals adhere to these globally recognised standards.

ART Ltd is a fully independent electronics training provider, delivering tailored services designed to meet the specific needs of its clients. Equipped with a custombuilt training centre dedicated to these specialised services, ART Ltd also has the flexibility and resources to provide comprehensive training at client locations, ensuring a seamless and adaptable learning experience.

“We pride ourselves on being just one of a few fully accredited IPC Certification Centres around the world that can offer certified IPC training to all programs including the Space and Military addendums to the three levels of IPC courses, Certified IPC Trainer, Certified Standards Expert and Certified IPC Specialist as well as Certified Interconnect Design and Enhanced Interconnect Design training.”

“We understand that not all manufacturers have a requirement to work or train to IPC standards, so to compensate for this, we offer courses tailored specifically to meet the needs of the customers and their processes and/or products. In order to further support our customers, we also offer consultancy, inspection plans, materials/process reports and auditing services,” stated Debbie McDade, Master IPC Trainer.

Located in Witham, Essex, ART Ltd is conveniently situated near major motorway networks and several London airports, making it easily accessible for international clients. In the years leading up to 2019, the company observed a growing demand for electronics training, particularly in Europe. Seizing this opportunity, ART Ltd expanded its reach by opening ART Europe – Leading Edge Training in Bergamo, Italy. This new location serves Italy and neighbouring countries, reducing travel time and costs for clients traveling to the UK.

The company was established in 1988 by Barry Morris who had one goal: for ART Ltd to be the number one service provider for all of the customers training and consultancy needs. Barry began as an apprentice wireman/assembler and later trained apprentices at Marconi, Basildon. Barry was the UK’s first instructor to offer hands-on Surface Mount Rework training, so after the college closed, he co-founded Advanced Rework Technology (ART Ltd). In 2015, Barry retired and sold his shares to Debbie McDade, who is now the Managing Director as well as a Master IPC Trainer.

The IPC certification program is the leading standard in the electronics industry. As a global trade association, IPC brings together industry experts, including ART personnel, to develop these internationally recognised standards.

ART Ltd provides in-house training for all IPC courses, along with customisable practical training designed to meet specific customer needs. ART Ltd also supply all the necessary equipment for on-site training, ensuring a complete and flexible learning experience.

“One significant advantage of having trainers at ART who are active IPC committee members is their deep understanding of not only the changes made to IPC documents and standards but also the rationale behind those changes. This makes the training provided by ART, whether it’s to our competitors or customers, that little more in-depth,” added Debbie.

Some upcoming training courses:

IPC-6012 CIT/CIS Certified Training – November 18th, 2024 – November 21st, 2024 (All Day)

IPC/WHMA-A-620 Space Certified IPC Training CIT/CIS –November 18th, 2024 – November 22nd, 2024 (All Day)

And experts from the company were on hand to explain the central role planetary gearboxes play in shaping our world. A video was shown to visitors demonstrating the impressive precision and accuracy planetary gearboxes can achieve using a fragile 0.5mm pencil lead and two counter-rotating discs, each controlled by a servo set up. The live demo itself can be seen on the innovative Apex Dynamics Gearbus, which regularly visits customers throughout the UK and Ireland.

With both disc and elastomer variants available, Apex Dynamics developed the couplings in response to demand. Customers often struggle to get couplings needed for a project, either because the size and range of couplings needed is not available, or because delivery times are poor.

Apex Dynamics UK can now supply the right size and quality of coupling, machined to the right specifications within its guaranteed 2-3 weeks delivery time. The couplings have easy axial installation and are bored to order; customised by Apex Dynamics to meet customers’ individual needs.

Apex demonstrates how planetary gears shape our world

At PPMA, Malcolm Hillary, Apex Dynamics UK Northern Region Sales Manager, demonstrated how planetary gearboxes are increasingly shaping, building and facilitating movement all around us by providing much greater torque in a small footprint for enhanced precision. Describing them as ‘the hidden heroes of modern engineering,’ he explained planetary gears are part of the future of motion control, with common applications including mobile robots, performance cars, renewable energy generation, aircraft engines and control systems. This article about how gears shape our world, written by Apex Dynamics Managing Director Mike Gulliford, is available on Apex Dynamics UK’s website.

Shown for the first time in the UK at PPMA: New zero backlash precision couplings

Apex Dynamics UK has expanded its extensive range of more than 50 gearboxes and rack and pinion systems to include a new product offering –precision couplings. Introduced at PPMA by Apex Dynamics General Manager Andrew Parsons, they come in a variety of input and output options and provide zero backlash shaft-to-shaft connection.

Each backlash free range has high torsional rigidity, making them suitable for high torque and high-speed applications. Both ranges also feature permissible eccentric angle, shock absorption for motor high gain and high frequency reciprocating.

Apex Dynamics showcases MG and MGH high precision planetary gearboxes

The MG and MGH ranges are new to PPMA and deliver low wear over the lifetime of the product, alongside much higher torque capacity and higher radial load. The MG gearboxes have a wide radial range, while the MGH product has four planets, providing higher torque performance and additional ratio options.

Cordless Industrial Vacuum Cleaning Power: BVC IV60 eGX

Cordless tools have revolutionised the industry; the convenience of being able to carry out tasks unencumbered by the need to find power and plug in, or to leave trailing leads around as trip hazards has resulted in almost all personal tools now being cordless.

In the World of vacuum cleaners, however, cordless options have been restricted to smaller machines with limited power and performance. This is because for anything other than the lightest applications, efficient vacuum cleaning requires a minimum of 1-1.5kW of power; something that is not easily achievable for useable durations with small batteries.

The new BVC IV60 eGX breaks the mould and has revolutionised the ability to provide cordless industrial vacuum cleaning power wherever and whenever it is required. This has been achieved through the unique combination of the proven BVC YP3 multistage vacuum turbine and the new Honda eGX electric engine with swappable battery power.

The Honda eGX is an engine that provides power in the 2hp class, powered by an on-board 750Wh lithium battery. When fitted to the BVC IV60 eGX industrial vacuum cleaner this power unit delivers around 1.5kW of power with a ½ hour run time, and around 1 hour of run time on a very useful half power setting. With a fast charger, and swappable battery continuous operation is achievable.

Since its introduction, the BVC IV60 eGX is finding diverse applications in several different markets. Examples include warehouse spillage cleaning in areas not serviced with power outlets, high-bay cleaning with high-reach kits, use in areas for wet recovery and cleaning; in fact, many applications where the lack of available power outlets is the motivation to look for cordless alternatives.

Apart from the elimination of the need to find local power outlets for industrial vacuum cleaning, the other significant benefit the BVC IV60 eGX offers is the elimination of trailing leads. In an operational processing area, e.g. if there is a need to clean up spillages without interrupting the process or causing a hazard with trailing leads, BVC IV60 eGX can be simply pushed to the location and turned on for efficient cleaning.

Like all BVC Industrial Vacuum Cleaners, BVC IV60 eGX is available in different versions and with a wide range of hoses and tools. The first two versions available are the dry tank and wet tank versions. The dry tank version can be optionally fitted with HEPA filtration and offered in M-Class and H-Class configurations. The wet tank version, can be fitted with a sludge separator bucket, and has a tipping tank and drain hose for easy emptying.

operator stays at ground level, avoiding the need to ‘work at height.’

Both versions are provided with 51mm (2”) inlets allowing the use of the full range of BVC 51mm and 38mm hoses and tools available from Quirepace. The range of tools includes various crevice tools, bench and brush tools, and robust floor tools. BVC IV60 eGX is also suitable for use with carbon-fibre high-reach cleaning tools for cleaning at high level whilst the

The BVC IV60 eGX is manufactured by Quirepace at the factory in Fareham, Hampshire, alongside the rest of the BVC Industrial Vacuum range of heavy-duty machines. UK manufacture means a UK source of spare parts and after sales services. In addition, BVC IV60 eGX has been validated by Honda as an officially approved product meaning that the warranty and any service requirements on the Honda eGX motor itself is available through any Honda service centre.

Quirepace have a specialist sales team covering the UK, so if you have a potential application, a member of the team can visit the site with a demonstration unit for an on-site trial.

In addition to the revolutionary new BVC IV60 eGX, the BVC range of Industrial Vacuum Cleaners covers all cleaning applications that can be met with a portable machine. With options for both hazardous dusts and machines suitable for operation in ATEX areas, the BVC range delivers robust and reliable solutions to Industry.

Surface Finishing Metal surface specialist and nanodiamond manufacturer to develop ‘world’s first’ composite copper coating

Electroplating specialist BEP Surface Technologies and nanodiamond manufacturer Carbodeon have announced a strategic relationship to develop a ‘world first’ coppernanodiamond composite coating.

Nanodiamonds are particles of diamond so small that you could fit a million on a pinhead. Their unique structures and properties radically enhance thermal conductivity and improve wear resistance.

Blending nanodiamonds with metal coatings can offer game-changing improvements in components used in many existing industries and emerging industries.

The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), which combines Greater Manchester-based BEP’s metal coatings expertise with Helsinki-based Carbodeon’s world-leading position in the manufacture of nanodiamond additives.

The agreement gives BEP the rights to develop and produce nanodiamond-infused copper, an innovative composite coating with the potential to radically enhance thermal conductivity and wear resistance. This will enhance BEP’s production of copper

chill rolls used by the world’s leading paper and packaging manufacturers.

Both activities will be pursued with a view to supplying several of Carbodeon’s well-established development programmes worldwide and enhancing BEP’s offer to customers.

BEP’s innovation arm, BEP Solutions, will carry out research and development activities. Established this year, BEP Solutions aims to forge new strategic partnerships across government, industry, and academia to develop solutions for long-standing barriers in manufacturing and engineering.
