Genesis™ Multiphase Detector: The birth of a new type of level profiler

With the growth of TDR based level instrumentation, there is an emphasis on expanding the use of TDR into multiphase applications where mainly high-priced profilers or multi-probe arrays exist today.

Magnetrol’s Genesis Multiphase Detector is a Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR)based, 24 VDC level detector designed to accurately define and quantify the various layers in multiple interface level measurement applications. Encompassing a number of significant developments from Magnetrol’s progressive engineering team, this innovative level detector can deliver a full interface profile of a vessel with performance which surpasses many of the more traditional technologies.

Utilizing patented ‘Top-Down’ and ‘BottomUp’ signals, along with advanced level detection algorithms, this single device

can be used in a wide variety of interface applications ranging from very light hydrocarbons to water-based media. For example, Genesis can be used to define the multiple interfaces in a separator vessel (sandwater-emulsion-oil-gas) with exceptional precision and can even determine the magnitude of any emulsion layer.

Multiphase level measurements exist throughout the process industries and are particularly relevant in the Oil & Gas and Petrochemical sectors due to the value derived from effective water and hydrocarbon separation. While level instrumentation has come a long way in measuring liquids of all varieties, multiphase level measurement is often

considered the greatest challenge in process control.

Despite the fact that there has been considerable effort by instrumentation manufacturers to measure multiphase levels, only now is there a cost-effective TDR-based multiphase level detector capable of widespread adoption. Radiometric and nucleonic technologies can profile multiphase media conditions, potentially without intrusion into the process vessel; however, they come with high upfront costs, regulatory burdens and increased safety requirements.

Outdoor AC/DC UPS for mast mounting protects 24V security and measurement technology

Emergency power supply solution with LiFePO4 battery technology

Bicker Elektronik, Donauwörth, Germany, presents the AC/DC UPS UPSI-2406IP-38AC in combination with the mast mounting set PSZ-1100, a robust and reliable emergency power supply solution for sensitive outdoor safety and measurement technology. In case of failure, shutdown or fluctuation of the AC supply voltage, the outdoor UPS ensures uninterruptible power supply of sensitive 24VDC applications, such as measurement and control technology, sensors, lighting, cameras and security technology. The energy storage solution used is based on the particularly safe and durable LiFePO4 battery technology, which enables long-term bridging of up to 100 hours. The intelligent DC emergency power supply with AC wide-range input thus reliably avoids system failures, downtime and data loss. The particularly robust design with IP65 protection makes the UPSI-2406IP-38AC the ideal choice for demanding environmental conditions. Four slotted holes on the housing enable secure and flexible wall or mast mounting (in combination with the mounting kit PSZ-1100). Typical applications include security, surveilance and building technology, energy, infrastructure, environmental engineering, communications, lighting, heavy industry, petrochemicals, agriculture, tunneling and mining.

Rugged aluminium housing with IP65 protection

The robust aluminium housing provides comprehensive protection for all components of the emergency power supply against mechanical impact. This includes the intelligent DC UPS control and charging electronics (24V/6A) with an upstream AC/DC converter as well as the built-in lithium iron phosphate battery pack. The housing elements and connections are carefully sealed and resistant to water, ice, oil and dust in accordance with protection class IP65. A built-in pressure equalisation element with membrane prevents condensation from forming inside the unit. The operating temperature of the UPSI-2406IP-38AC covers a wide range from -20 to +50°C. The high-quality input and output cables are permanently installed on the housing.

Long-term bridging for 24VDC applications up to 100 hours

Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) of sensitive or safety-related 24VDC systems supplied from the AC mains is particularly important in case of blackouts,

brownouts or flicker. For international use, the UPSI2406IP-38AC has a wide-range AC input from 90 to 264 VAC with active PFC and high-efficiency AC/DC converter topology. In AC mains operation, which is automatically set after the input voltage is applied, the 24VDC output is activated and the integrated LiFePO4 energy storage is charged at the same time. In case of a voltage drop of the input voltage below the smallest nominal value, the UPS is switched to battery operation with regulated DC output voltage within fractions of a second and enables backup times of up to 100h. When the AC input voltage returns, the UPS is automatically switched back to regular mains operation and charging of the energy storage continues.

Integrated LiFePO4 high-performance battery pack

The LiFePO4 energy storage (lithium iron phosphate) with 330Wh convinces in safety-relevant applications with a particularly stable battery chemistry, a long service life of at least 10 years and more than 6,000 full charge and discharge cycles. Bicker Elektronik deliberately uses the particularly safe lithium iron phosphate chemistry for all high-performance battery packs, which makes thermal runaway almost impossible. The UPSI-2406IP38AC also meets the safety requirements of the IEC/ EN 62040-1 standard. The battery management system (BMS) monitors and controls the complete charging and discharging process of each battery cell of the energy storage unit. The integrated cell balancing ensures a balanced and even charge of all cells so that the full capacity of the lithium iron phosphate battery pack remains permanently usable. In addition, the UPSI2406IP-38AC offers a battery start function, which makes it possible to start a 24V application from the battery by pressing a button on the UPS (up to 6A max. load current), without the AC voltage supply being present.

Volkmann: Ideas ahead

Volkmann is a leading German manufacturer of sanitary and safe Vacuum Conveyors and Powder Handling Systems: seen as the most secure systems for powder handling and explosion risk protection and prevention. The marketleading ranges of Vacuum Cownveyors were the first to be fully certified under European ATEX regulation for all dust and very soon, also gas explosion zones.

Volkmann GmbH was founded in 1973 by Jürgen and Ingrid Volkmann, as a consulting company for production automation. Thilo Volkmann has since headed the company from 1992, from the headquarters in Soest, Westphalia, Germany.

Volkmann UK Ltd was founded in 2001 by Michael Walker and the new Managing Director is Byron Fipkin. The UK daughter company is based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire and there are also now several companies around the world such as: Volkmann France, Volkmann Netherlands, Volkmann USA and Volkmann Japan.

We caught up MD Byron Fipkin for more insight, “Volkmann is a specialist in the transport and handling of bulk materials. Volkmann offers customers from the chemical, food processing and pharmaceutical industry class leading standards as well as individually planned and produced systems for the safe, hygienic and user-friendly handling of powders and bulk materials.

Volkmann supports customers in solving their conveying tasks, from the initial idea right up to the finished plant.

This is our strength

We act responsibly and pay particular attention to the perfect interaction between our and other systems applied in the process. Our expertise in consulting and design, together with the high quality of manufacture and flexibility within the company, offer the best recipe for the success of a project as well as for the satisfaction of the users, thanks to equipment and plants that can be operated simply and safely.

Pigeonhole thinking is frowned upon at our company.

We find it predictable to offer and manufacture only the standard catalogue items time and again. Short processing times and adhering to sophisticated customer standards even in manufacturing and one-off order quantities keep us ‘on the run’ and gives us greater satisfaction.

Customers know that we care much about safety and come to us for training in operators’ seminars for good and safe daily usage and maintenance of our systems as well as process planners’ seminars with the theory of how and why it comes to explosions and the general overview on the design of safe systems in the field of powder handling.

Our PowTReX series enables the efficient reprocessing of build excess metal powder

for applications in Metal AM. The integrated vacuum conveyor handles the feeding of the powder – e.g. directly from the build frame of the 3D printer. The recovered powder can be filled into bottles or containers or conveyed by pipe to downstream machines.”

Looking to the future, Volkmann UK are actively sourcing new facilities for further expansion. This new planned facility will feature a stateof-the-art test centre, where customer product trials can be conducted on-site.

“We are also developing a quick-ship programme for our most popular items to allow customers to receive deliveries of certain parts and even whole conveyors with a greatly reduced lead time,” concluded Byron.

Veolia Water Technologies and the next generation of Water Distillation Technology

In this issue of Industrial Process News, we are pleased to feature Veolia Water Technologies as our Water Treatment Solutions and Services Company of the Month.

Veolia Water Technologies is the UK’s leading provider of water treatment solutions and services. Originally founded in Paris in 1853, it has been trading in the UK for over a century, providing customers with access to a wealth of water treatment experience and expertise across multiple sectors. Amongst its many services and solutions for the industrial sector, Veolia can provide process and wastewater recovery systems as well as industrial wastewater and sewage treatment. Veolia also specialises in providing water pretreatment for all types of feed water and influent, in addition to technology for the production of manufacturing process water.

Based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire –with offices in Birmingham, Stoke-on-Trent and Glasgow – Veolia Water Technologies provides a range of solutions designed to tackle the evolving challenges of water processing. One of its latest solutions is the next generation of its distillation technology, Polaris™ 2.0. This latest iteration of its successful technology has been developed in response to the advancements made in pharmaceutical manufacturing, which require a constant supply of water for injection and pure steam.

At its heart, water distillation is a simple process. Water is fed into the system via the feed water inlet and then heated in an evaporation chamber, producing steam and water mist. The vapourised, gaseous

substance is then passed through a separator, which removes any prevailing water droplets containing bacteria and endotoxins. Following this, the pure steam passes into a condenser system before emerging as hot water for injection. A dedicated vent line also allows for the removal of any non-condensable gases from the process.

The Polaris™ 2.0 range offers an array of standard units with different capacities in order to meet all needs and requirements. These can be equipped with an extensive number of optional extras that allow the customer to tailor the product to their needs. However, despite optional differences, all Polaris™ 2.0 units are designed and built in compliance with ASME Bioprocessing Equipment (BPE) standards. All Polaris™ 2.0 units are also fitted with a Siemens HMI Comfort Panel installed with new validated and certified software to guarantee compliance with FDA CFR21 Part 11 and GAMP V.

The newest generation of Polaris™ products comes in two skids. The first is the Polaris™ 2.0 Multiple Effect Distiller (MED), designed to guarantee a steady supply of hot water for injection (WFI) with capacities ranging from 250 to 4,500 litres per hour. With a varying number of columns to optimise utility consumption, Polaris™ 2.0 MED has been designed to reduce energy and water consumption. It utilises a falling film distillation process to ensure efficiency and a fast startup and has insulated heat exchangers and columns to reduce the amount of energy lost. Furthermore, with a blowdown level of just 10%, water waste is kept to a minimum.

The MED is also operationally smart; this enables customers to monitor key metrics at all times, including the conductivity and temperature of WFI. For those looking to add enhanced functionality, features such as a feed water tank, blowdown cooler, automatic feedwater valve, sanitisation and automatic

drain and sight glass on the columns can be added.

The second skid available is the Polaris™

2.0 Pure Steam Generator (PSG). This provides users with a rapid-response pure steam supply, which can be used for a variety of applications, such as sterilisation in place (SIP) for bioreactors and vessels, product terminal sterilisation, lyophilizer sterilisation and sterile facility HVAC humidification.

This model is available in a range of sizes capable of producing 300 to 3,000 kilograms of pure steam per hour and up to 4 barg. Advanced droplet separation features and an integrated thermal degasser, for the removal of

IPN is sponsored by – see them on page 21 10 Water Treatment Solutions & Services Company of the Month

non-condensable gases, ensures quality and compliance with EN285. As with the MED, insulated heat column and heat exchangers, PID pressure and control and an intuitive display are all standard.

The new Polaris™ 2.0 range modernises the established distillation process by allowing for the incorporation of Veolia’s Hubgrade system – a cloud-based monitoring service that provides all necessary operational information and alerts in addition to advanced data analysis. This enables faster on-site issue resolution and facilitates easier collaboration with Veolia’s engineers. With this in mind, Veolia Water Technologies offers a full suite of

servicing and after-sales support that utilises its technological solutions to prevent, predict and remediate issues before they arise.

In addition to these digital aids, both models have 304 stainless steel frames that allow for easy maintenance. Veolia Water Technologies also has a full suite of packages designed to ensure continued functionality and efficient production. This includes a combination of preplanned services and real-time repairs based on data inputs via Hubgrade – significantly reducing the likelihood of costly downtime.

Regardless of which Polaris™ 2.0 model is chosen, customers can take advantage of a range of benefits specifically designed to enhance production and aid cleaning processes within pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. Whether this is saving water and energy via the efficient production of WFI and pure steam, having the flexibility to scale output in line with demand or taking advantage of smart maintenance through integration with Hubgrade.

Distillation methods for the production of WFI and pure steam have stood the test of time. However, Veolia Water Technologies continues to demonstrate that by evolving existing

methods and improving them with modern technology, simple methods of production can continue to be the best option for a broad range of applications.

Finally, when determining which system is best for your needs, there are a number of technical considerations to take into account as well as the specific needs of your operation. Rest assured, the team of experts from Veolia Water Technologies will be able to advise which system best suits your needs and support you throughout the implementation process.

Funnel Integrated Technology hits the stage

Over the last 30 years, there has been a boom in the traceability and identification of manufactured components. Many industries want to directly laser mark these, however there are some parts that are just getting larger and larger.

Casting and pressing companies sometimes have such large parts that they simply cannot fit these into a standard sized Class 1 laser enclosure leaving many companies wondering how they can mark them.

Even though they launched a new range of large XXL-Box class 1 enclosures in 2022, SIC Marking saw this problem as a new challenge for 2023. They have now launched their Funnel Integrated Technology (F.I.T. for short) as a complete all in one solution that combines all of the necessary components and settings to mark larger

parts in a simple, safe and economic way within the customers production line and budget.

The FIT tunnel eliminates the need to enclose the entire part for the laser marking process by enclosing just the marking area. The compact design allows for the FIT system to be retrofitted easily into an existing robotic cell.

This ready to integrate and secured laser marking system comes as a ‘Tunnel Style’ Class 1 compliant enclosure. It is a compact and easy to integrate solution with a single connection to a PLC. The F.I.T. can be mounted to a robot head for presenting to a stationary part – or fixed in position allowing the robot to present the part for marking.

Not only is the F.I.T. adapted for production environments with its maintenance drawer for the cleaning of the lens, it has built-in shock protection preventing the funnel from damage. The F.I.T. tunnel can be adapted to your marking needs with three window sizes available as standard: 24mm x 32mm, 100mm x 32mm and 100mm x 100mm. Custom sizes can also be accommodated.

The F.I.T. is available as a basic chassis

or as a complete solution with protective covers, a cooling system, electrical cabinet and tooling as well as an optional integrated Cognex vision system for 2D verification/validation or 3D lens for marking curved or angled surfaces.

For a demonstration of the new F.I.T. and/or any of the other laser marking systems in SIC Marking’s extensive range, please get in touch with SIC Marking UK in Warwick, UK on: 01926 830372 where one of the very knowledgeable engineers will be happy to talk to you.

Look for the original green and white QUADRO mixing tips

Illegal copies can be dangerous AND costly. Knockoff products can be inferior, and misapplications can be dangerous to humans and animals. At a minimum, using unverified copies can lead to double work correcting misapplications, doubling the cost. Using original systems for dispensing 2-component materials from certified manufacturers ensures greater economy and dispensing safety for people and the environment. medmix’s strict quality controls, detailed know-how, and supporting consulting service are important for professionals.

Today, Mixpac mixing systems cover the entire industry of 2-component adhesives and sealants. Years of development

and co-operation with material manufacturers and their customers in the industrial and DIY sectors allows medmix to boast top of class reliability at optimum prices. Copies can never achieve medmix’s high level of reliability because they are not developed to be compatible with an entire system. Every misapplication due to cheap copies can lead to high repair and correction costs. Cheap also means no guarantees – all misapplication costs are borne by the customer.

Cheap copies can lead to cheap seals and bonds – these are accidents waiting to happen. medmix focuses on maximum safety for people, animals, and the environment.

medmix invests millions in the development of its products to ensure safe and economic use. Long-time investments in mixer system technology allow for economically viable 2-component adhesive/sealant systems. From the dispenser to the mixer, genuine Mixpac products provide a best-in-class total system for application of 2-component adhesives and sealants.

Buying cheap copies risks damage to users and the reputation of the entire industry. Accordingly, medmix invests heavily to protect and educate the market to successfully detect and deny risky, cheap copies.

Recently, medmix prosecuted distributors of a large shipment of illegal copies of the wellknown Quadro™ brand mixers. These dangerous copies of agricultural sector mixers, used in hoof care, can cause great damage. Every misapplication results in unrecoverable money lost to the farmer.

Customers and users can trust that medmix Switzerland AG will continue to defend their rights, their health, and their economic safety.

Smart Solutions and the VD800 series embodies intelligent energy management through a longer battery performance, so you can keep going performing multiple measurements. Through a standard power supply, the VD800 is charged quickly through the USB-C interface. That’s not all though: with ergonomics in mind, the new modular design allows for a seamless exchange of defective sensor heads by trained staff on-site and thereby drastically reducing downtime through maintenance.

Vacuum meters are required in various applications.

The VD800 vacuum meters can be connected to vacuum pumps or plants, linked to external Thyracont USB sensors or directly placed into vacuum chambers. With a focus on flexibility, the VD800 can be permanently installed in vacuum plants or in a mobile manner. The compact VD800 are perfect for service use, quality control and maintenance work or for leakage testing via rate of rise measurement.

The VD800 Compact Vacuum Meters are a result of meticulous in-house R&D innovation and as we enter Industry 5.0, Thyracont Vacuum is acutely aware of the importance of sustainability best practice. We asked Kristina Putz about how the company was promoting this, “The devices we develop make an important contribution to sustainable future technologies in industry and research. Renewable energy, electromobility and modern medical technology would be inconceivable without vacuum technology.”

“Many of our gauges have a modular design that makes it easy to replace contaminated or worn sensors. This not only reduces maintenance time and transport costs, but also extends the service life of the individual components. An approach also pursued by the European Commission as part of the European Green Deal.”

“In our research and development department, we are continuously optimising our processes to find sustainable alternatives such as air-source heat pumps and electric vehicles and to add positive ecological value to our products.”

CCL launches EcoFloat WHITE Shrink Sleeves for light sensitive products

EcoFloat® WHITE supports the use of widely recycled transparent PET bottles combined with a white opaque sleeve/Low density sleeve material supports float separation from PET during the recycling process/Increases yield of high-quality, food-grade PET flakes for bottle-to-bottle recycling

CCL Label, a global leader in specialty label, security and packaging solutions, has introduced a new version of its proven EcoFloat low-density polyolefin sleeve material: EcoFloat® WHITE.

“EcoFloat WHITE will enable greater recyclability for dairy packaging and other products that are light sensitive –we expect it to be a game changer. The dairy industry often uses bottles made from opaque materials like HDPE for bottles containing yoghurt and probiotic drinks or similar products. However, these white bottles are rarely recycled back into food grade applications for a number of reasons, including strict food contact regulations - so the bottles leave the packaging loop,” says Guenther Birkner, member of the management team at CCL. “We have seen a big trend in the Food and Beverage but also Home and Personal care industries to move packaging into transparent PET, which has an established food grade recycling stream. It is our goal to support this with a functional product decoration.”

Millions of bottles can now be recycled in a closed loop

“Legislation such as the European Green Deal and the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation will drive ‘design for recycling’ or eco-design in the coming years. Every brand has to come up with packaging that is actually recyclable and more important – recycled,” explains Marika Knorr, Head of Sustainability and Communication at CCL Label.

By using transparent PET bottles with a white sleeve, companies achieve two benefits at the same time. The entire bottle is fully recyclable, while still achieving the same look and feel that marketing is looking for – to maximize the messages and mandatory information given to consumers on the bottle. Millions of additional PET bottles are recycled and turned into a new one –giving the packaging many ‘extra lives.’

Additional light blocking barrier can be achieved with carbon-free inks

A key requirement for dairy products is light blocking properties to keep the product fresh and maximize shelf life. In the past, this light-blocking barrier was often achieved with a layer of black or silver ink, which is essential for protecting the products but could also be detrimental to sorting and recycling, as the standard near-infrared detection (NIR) system commonly used could have difficulty detecting the underlying material.

“Since 80% of recycling is actually sorting, we had to make sure that our solution was detectable by the standard technology used in the recycling industry today,” says Norbert Fenkart, who heads the research and development (R&D) department at CCL’s sustainable sleeve label center in Dornbirn, Austria. “We can use carbon-free inks to create additional lightblocking properties on the sleeve. These work well in NIR detection as we have seen in tests*. The underlying rigid PET bottle is detected and the bottle is sorted into the correct waste stream.”

+44 (0)1473 823011

info.uk@berlinpackaging.com

www.berlinpackaging.co.uk

The sleeve also helps with the crucial sink/float process step in PET recycling because it is made from a lowdensity polyolefin material that floats. It automatically separates from the PET bottle flakes and the density separation is very simple and clean: the heavier PET flakes sink to the bottom of the container, while the floatable material collects at the top of the container and can be easily captured and removed. The recycler is left with high quality, clean PET flakes that can be recycled back into food grade packaging for the dairy and other industries.

The transparent EcoFloat® sleeve material has been commercialised for over two years and has been adopted by many international brands to increase the recycling of their packaging containers. Click here for more information: EcoFloat

Print & Packaging Signs & Labels Hereford eyes new markets with VeloBlade Nexus 2516 from Soyang

The sign and display business only installed the new VeloBlade Nexus 2516 in early January but has already seen a marked improvement in production.

Signage and display specialist Signs & Labels Hereford has invested in a new VeloBlade Nexus 2516 from Soyang Hardware Ltd., revealing how it plans to use the machine to expand its business into new and profitable markets.

Based just outside Hereford town centre, Signs & Labels Hereford is a family-run business that has been serving the market for more than 23 years. Offering signage, print and vehicle graphics, the company is led by Director Ross Hughes, whose father and sister also work within the business.

With the company having experienced an increase in demand for its services, it opted to upgrade its cutting equipment. Signs & Labels Hereford had been running the same cutter for 16 years, but as this required manual operation, the company sought out a machine with faster running speeds and automation features.

After researching the market, Signs & Labels Hereford quickly identified Vivid Laminating Technologies’ VeloBlade Nexus 2516 as the ideal solution. Distributed by Soyang Hardware Ltd in the UK and Ireland, the VeloBlade Nexus 2516 is a wide-format digital die cutter with a bed size of 2,500mm x 1,600mm.

“I had seen the machine a lot on LinkedIn and always thought it looked like the ideal piece of kit for our business,” Ross Hughes said. “Once I started looking and spoke to Vivid’s Lewis Evans, the price point for the specification stood out from other machines and further solidified my interest in the machine.”

“After speaking to Lewis during an online demo and at the showroom, I was really impressed by the customer service

and attention to detail in making everything as straightforward as possible for their customers. We placed the order within days of seeing the machine at the showroom.”

Signs & Labels Hereford purchased the machine in December, and it was installed at the company’s Hereford site in early January. Ross Hughes said despite the cutter having only been in place a short time, the business has already seen a significant improvement in production.

“The VeloBlade is already making production faster,” Ross Hughes said. “The automation of barcode reading means there are fewer touch points. Also, as it is so simple to use, we have been able to train up numerous members of staff on the machine; we don’t have to wait for specific team members to become available to operate it.”

Looking ahead, Ross Hughes is confident that the new VeloBlade will allow Signs & Labels Hereford to expand its offering and move into new markets, picking out bespoke packaging as one area of interest.

“I think the machine will impact us immensely,” Ross Hughes said. “It will allow us to keep up with and surpass the ever-demanding issue of lead times and take us onto the next level regarding speed and quality.”

“It gives us more scope to take on more of our current work as well as looking at expanding into other markets.”

PSG Biotech’s Quattroflow launches a new single-use micropump, the QB2-SD

PSG Dover has combined all of its premier intellectual property for the biopharma market under one umbrella, ‘PSG Biotech,’ to provide a comprehensive portfolio of innovative products that is delighting the industry with cutting-edge flowcontrol solutions from development to commercial scale. Back in June 2023, we announced our product integration with PSG Biotech’s well-established biopharma pump brand, Quattroflow, to develop our Quantex single-use microdosing technology for the biopharma market.

Quattroflow’s heart-mimicking, low shear, low pulsation, high turndown four-piston diaphragm pumps are the market-leading pump technology used in over 50 countries worldwide, for the gentle transfer of delicate biologics in many downstream applications including Tangential Flow Filtration (TFF) and Chromatography With this deep understanding of the global market, regulations and technical manufacturing requirements, the expert Quattroflow team at PSG Biotech know what it takes to develop the Quantex Microdosing pump into a biopharma certified, market-ready product.

We’re now delighted to report that this integration with our sister PSG Dover brand, Quattroflow has successfully progressed with the launch of the first of a brand new line of ‘QB’ pumps based on our Quantex single-use rotary pump technology. The brand-new QB2-SD pump sits within PSG Biotech Quattroflow’s portfolio of flow control solutions for the biopharma industry.

Developments achieved include some vital material changes to the QB2-SD which mean that it can be gamma irradiated at 50kGy and materials meet USP <88> Class VI regulations. Rigorous tests have been

carried out and the QB2-SD is now certified for the following standard biopharma regulations:

■ Particulate Testing (Sub-visible testing per USP 788)

■ Microbial Ingress

■ Endotoxin (USP 85)

■ Bioburden (ISO 11737-1)

The QB2-SD brings the PSG Biotech Quattroflow offering into new areas within the biopharma process: whereas the four-piston diaphragm pump range is popular in downstream/larger-scale manufacture, the single-use QB2-SD pump microdoses for very low flow applications – more appropriate in cell & gene therapy, laboratories or small-scale upstream and downstream applications. Plastics & Rubber

Meeting the challenges

Hertfordshire based engineering company Magog Industries continue to develop it’s range of bimetallic alloy hardened grades and coatings, working closely with established UK and European based coating specialists. Plastics recycling is growing within the industry with many moulders increasingly recycling in-house.

However, where recycled material needs to be bought in, problems can arise where material contain abrasive elements that pose a challenge in processing. For example, added fibres used to reinforce the moulded product can now be as high as 50%. Certain PE and some grades of biodegradable polymers such as PVOH (Polyvinyl Alcohol) can attack the screw surface over time.

Screw designs are configured to maximise performance from

single start compression to a range of mixing elements for optimised distributive and dispersive mixing. The company also advise and offer design configuration for complex parallel and conical twin extruder screws.

Manufactured from high quality metals including EN 41B Steel provides hard wearing properties but also allows refurbishment of hard welded flights at a later date.

Depending on material type, surface treatments are on offer to include ceramic, chrome, Hastelloy, Armoloy and Tungsten Carbide (HVOF) in addition to Nitride and bi-metallic hardened.

The results confirm the team’s dedication to the company’s commitment of operating best practices in all manufacturing processes whilst delivering quality products you can depend on.

What drives the cost of a circuit board? And how do those factors in turn impact the sustainability?

Whether your role is managerial, commercial or technical there is a good chance that you have an interest in ensuring that the printed circuit boards you are designing, purchasing and/or assembling are as efficient as they can be in terms of achieving the lowest total cost, sustainably, without compromising functionality or reliability of the end product.

The majority of the cost – 80-90% is built into the product in the early stages of the design phase – before either the PCB supplier of EMS company has sight of the design. We have also found that many of the cost drivers directly impact all aspects

in producing and delivering a more sustainable product. In our Sustainability Impact meter you can see the effects for each cost driver.

NCAB has divided the cost drivers into two categories, the ‘hard costs’ and the ‘soft costs.’ The hard costs drivers are covering aspects that relate to the physical printed circuit board itself. Examples being copper weights and build complexity. In these cases the impacts on sustainability are more tangible. The soft cost drivers are those elements tear bless considered can eat to delays in engineering, lost time and mis-specified demands that only serve to either achieve the desired quality or long-term reliability – this is not sustainable PCB production in our eyes. Many times these factors are a little less quantifiable, but can certainly have just as much of an impact on cost and sustainability.

Embarking on a Green Journey

Oliver Kent, Product Marketing Manager and Chair of Atlas Copco’s Green Journey Committee, explains how it will support the Group’s climate ambitions

Atlas Copco Compressors UK has embarked upon a Green Journey to support Atlas Copco Group’s global strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the entire value chain. This includes making further reductions in the energy consumed in its own operations, such as manufacturing sites, offices, and vehicles, as well as reducing emissions during the use of its products by supplying more energy efficient solutions to customers.

The Green Journey initiative has been structured to include employees all across Atlas Copco Compressors UK who have volunteered to help define, shape and enact the company’s Green Journey. These employees are tasked with developing and promoting a range of activities and policies that the wider company can follow to reduce its carbon footprint. The initiatives must be lasting, with tangible benefits, and able to be woven seamlessly into the working life.

Industry itself has to help in reducing the global energy demand and make more efficient use of the energy that it consumes. Atlas Copco can contribute to reducing industry’s electricity consumption by continuing to develop energy efficient products used by all industrial sectors.

At current rates, greenhouse gas emissions are predicted to increase average global temperatures by 4–6°C by the end of this century, resulting in unmanageable climate change. To avoid this outcome more has to be done and at a much faster rate.

When a company sets Science-Based targets it is a commitment to ensure the company’s emissions are in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change reached in 2015. Setting high climate ambitions at a company level will help governments achieve their targets.

Science-based targets focus on greenhouse gas emissions reduction. They are based on the ‘carbon budget’ – the

emissions permitted that will keep temperature increases within the limits. These endeavours work to limit the average global temperature increase to well below 2°C and pursue efforts to limit temperature increases to no more than 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

To give a true picture of their contribution, science-based targets are validated by the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) which assesses and approves companies’ targets in line with its strict performance criteria.

Fully committed to being part of the solution for a better tomorrow, the Atlas Copco Group has set itself sciencebased targets that will contribute towards achieving a low-carbon society.

One of its approved science-based targets has been established that aims to reduce the emissions from the company’s direct operations by 46% by the year 2030, when compared to a 2019 baseline.

Another approved target is to reduce the carbon impact of products in use by 28% by the year 2030, when compared to the 2019 base level of emissions.

Finally, there are additional requirements to reduce water usage, achieve a 100% rate of waste recycling or re-use, and increase the number of sub-suppliers who operate with an approved Environmental Management System in place.

The main benefit of these targets is that they inspire new ways of thinking, new initiatives and the actions needed for positive change.

The considerable number of companies that have committed to setting science based targets shows a groundswell in climate ambition and brings with it more confidence about being on track to prevent the worst effects of climate change. Across industry, companies report that adopting a science based target boosts

profitability, improves investor confidence, drives innovation, reduces regulatory uncertainty, and strengthens brand reputation.

Atlas Copco challenges itself to develop and deliver even more energy-saving solutions for its customers and to apply its solutions within more ‘green applications,’ as defined by the EU taxonomy. These applications facilitate the transition to a low-carbon society or help protect the environment.

Some typical examples of a green application that might use Atlas Copco compressed air, industrial gas or process cooling products are the biogas industry that collects fuel gas from decaying organic matter; recycling plants that can repurpose waste material into a usable form; and companies that process hazardous materials.

In a production environment, going greener is all about energy efficiency. For example, conducting a non-intrusive energy audit to measure the efficiency of an existing compressed air installation, involving the use of a data logger such as Atlas Copco Compressors’ AIRchitect, can deliver energy savings within a compressed air installation.

Most industrial compressed air applications experience a fluctuating air demand. By replacing a fixed-speed unit with a variable speed drive (VSD) compressor that matches output to user demand will realise considerable energy savings overall.

Compressors generate heat that is allowed to dissipate as quickly as possible to keep the ambient temperature down. But instead of letting it go to waste, installing a heat recovery system, such as Atlas Copco Compressors’ ER control unit, will recover and re-use up to 90% of the energy required to run a compressor.

Achieving laboratory precision in portable turbidity measurement

The everyday challenges of turbidity measurement, such as inaccuracies due to stray light, complicated handling, and time-consuming calibration, are eliminated with the Lovibond® TB350. The TB350 is the most advanced portable turbidimeter on the market with unprecedented measuring range and unsurpassed accuracy.

Multipath 90° BLAC® is a patented sensor technology, making the TB350 the most versatile turbidimeter combining laboratory accuracy in a portable instrument. This technology ensures the highest accuracy is guaranteed in the lower turbidity range from 0.01NTU and maintains the outstanding precision level in the highest turbidity range up to 4,000NTU.

The recently developed optical system works with two ingeniously arranged 90° detectors and thus ensures a purely nephelometric measuring principle. During the turbidity measurement, two different path lengths of the incident light beam through the sample are cleverly exploited. Various particle sizes and shapes are detected with the highest measurement accuracy even where the particle size distribution deviates from the calibration standard.

The novel BLAC® technology stands for Backscattered Light Absorbing Cavity. The light-absorbing trap almost eliminates unwanted stray light and provides extremely accurate results for low turbidity down to 0.01NTU.

The sensor technology was specifically designed by a team of world-renowned turbidity experts to solve common user problems in turbidity measurement. With intuitive colour touch screen and straightforward data management protocols ensure easy handling. A customised measuring mode for fast-settling particles, the ‘Fast Settling Mode,’ complements the outstanding instrument performance increasing the accuracy of the turbidity reading for large and heavy particles from 20NTU, but especially in the high measuring range of up to 4,000NTU.

The TB350 makes calibration and verification procedures, which are otherwise quite complicated in turbidity measurement, easier than ever before. Formazin-based T-CAL® primary solutions are safely sealed in airtight vials and can be used immediately.
