New VD800 Compact Vacuum Meters
For more than fifty years, Thyracont Vacuum Instruments GmbH has been at the forefront of intelligent vacuum measurement. This proud Made in Germany powerhouse has evolved to become a global leader in precisionengineered manufacturing in vacuum measurement and control solutions.
Established in 1970 by Dipl. Ing. Heinz Plöchinger, this first-class Basel II ranked company has continued to impress industry experts with the primary development and manufacturing of vacuum gauges. The Bavarian based company provides a wide range of accessories and software for system configuration, calibration management and data analysis to support its exclusive product range.

We asked Kristina Putz at Thyracont Vacuum Marketing to tell us more about the company, “We offer an innovative and extensive product range including vacuum gauges, vacuum sensors, vacuum transducers, vacuum meters, vacuum switches, and controllers as well as accessories and vacuum components. Our product families fulfil process requirements in a range of 2000 to 3e-11 mbar.”
“The applications for our vacuum instruments include areas like process industry, coating and drying, semiconductor and solar, analysis as well as research and development. Depending on the scope of tasks, we offer a wide range of sensor principles in various combinations such as piezo, Pirani, capacitive, cold cathode, and hot cathode, to meet the requirements of almost any industrial vacuum process.”
With a steadfast commitment to R&D innovation, the team of engineers continue to perfect the range of vacuum instruments. With a focus on digital connectivity, maintainability and individual settings, Thyracont Vacuum Instruments GmbH innovation remains synonymous with intelligent functionalities.
Since 1970, the company has built up an impressive distribution network, with customers now stretching around the globe and the new VD800 Compact Vacuum Meters have created a buzz across many industrial applications. Vacuum instruments play a pivotal role in scientific research and advanced technology and Thyracont handheld vacuum meters have set the industrial gold standard for precision and functionality. Driven by the industry’s requirements, the new VD800 models have gone further again to refine intuitive handling, menu operations and graphical display options.
The functionality of the VD800 series allows for measurement of absolute pressure from 2000 to 5e-5 mbar and relative pressure from –1,060 to +1,200mbar. The enhanced larger graphic display now features measurement pressure graphs in addition to minimum and maximum pressure with a 4+1 membrane keypad driving an intuitive menu-driven operation. Furthermore, the integrated data logger records multiple measurement series with RTC data. With sampling rates from 20ms to 60s the devices are suited for both recording highly dynamic pressure curves and long-term measurements. For ease of monitoring, the alarm functionality emits an optic or acoustic signal when approaching a threshold value, allowing for a streamlined user experience.
It is imperative that compact vacuum meters give direct read-outs of measured data and the VD800 series ensures this through a read-out of the measurements stored in the data logger via the USB-C interface or optional Bluetooth® LE for wireless data transfer. The Thyracont VacuGraph™ software allows users to save and analyse the data easily and subsequently start online measurements.
Thyracont Vacuum has always strived for optimised Smart Solutions and the VD800 series embodies intelligent energy management through a longer battery performance, so you can keep going performing multiple measurements. Through a standard power supply, the VD800 is charged quickly through the USB-C interface. That’s not all though: with ergonomics in mind, the new modular design allows for a seamless exchange of defective sensor heads by trained staff on-site and thereby drastically reducing downtime through maintenance
Vacuum meters are required in various applications. The VD800 vacuum meters can be connected to vacuum pumps or plants, linked to external Thyracont USB sensors or directly placed into vacuum chambers. With a focus on flexibility, the VD800 can be permanently installed in vacuum plants or in a mobile manner. The compact VD800 are perfect for service use, quality control and maintenance work or for leakage testing via rate of rise measurement.
The VD800 Compact Vacuum Meters are a result of meticulous in-house R&D innovation and as we enter Industry 5.0, Thyracont Vacuum is acutely aware of the importance of sustainability best practice. We asked Kristina Putz about how the company was promoting this, “The devices we develop make an important contribution to sustainable future technologies in industry and research. Renewable energy, electromobility and modern medical technology would be inconceivable without vacuum technology.”
“Many of our gauges have a modular design that makes it easy to replace contaminated or worn sensors. This not only reduces maintenance time and transport costs, but also extends the service life of the individual components. An approach also pursued by the European Commission as part of the European Green Deal.”
“In our research and development department, we are continuously optimising our processes to find sustainable alternatives such as air-source heat pumps and electric vehicles and to add positive ecological value to our products.”
