Patented AllRounder wheelsets for transport platforms

Losyco, expert for intra-logistics on rails, introduces patented AllRounder wheelsets, an easy-to-install solution for taking heavy loads around corners on the floor-level LOXrail system. Two rollers mounted at an angle can be rotated in opposite directions in order to realise effortless 90° turns at junction points. This enables rail layouts with linking and crisscrossing lines without the need for additional, highmaintenance shunting equipment. The time-saving and cost-efficient solution reduces the installation effort, even in halls with complex floor plans. Barriers like supporting pillars are simply avoided. The wheelset design ensures minimal friction due to the very small contact area between the rollers

and the guide rail. Thereby, even loads weighing several tons can be easily moved across the rails and around corners by hand. The new solution is also useful for re-routing transport platforms back to the start of the line. Fitted with four wheelsets, the new AllRounder transport platforms for flexible maneuvering carry payloads up to 10 tons on the LOXrail 25 system. LOSYCO will adapt them to customer requirements in terms of dimensions and track widths.

Union Industries Ramdoor helps Sonoco with efficiency improvements

Union Industries, the UK’s leading manufacturer of bespoke industrial doors, has helped Sonoco introduce more efficient operating procedures with the installation of its high speed Ramdoor.

It represents a first for the paper mill in Halifax, West Yorkshire, which recycles wastepaper and cardboard – converting it into a range of useful products.

With efficiency in mind, Union’s rugged Ramdoor replaced a slow and outdated roller shutter door, at the same time helping with the segregation of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Sited in a section of the warehouse leading to the waste yard, the newly installed Ramdoor has enabled Sonoco to increase the frequency of both large machinery and forklift traffic through this entranceway, in line with changes to their operating procedures.

Due to the large volumes of wastepaper processed, it is important that the Ramdoor seals quickly,

preventing the ingress of debris. A Class 5 wind resistance rating provides extra benefit – helping maintain operations during more challenging weather conditions.

Sonoco, a multi-billion-dollar global provider of consumer packaging, industrial products and packaging supply chain services, has been a customer of Union Industries for almost 30 years, having previously fitted four Matadoors.

This is the first Ramdoor to be installed at the site – features include a variable speed drive motor with frequency inverter for greater control, thick Ramhide door blade material with anti-static additive and a ‘Crash Out’ system which reduces the potential of bottom beam damage –helping to minimise downtime and repair costs.

continuously improve both our operational processes as well as our safety standards.”

The heavy-duty wind-bar system, combined with the extra-deep side-guides, provides added strength, and contributes to the Ramdoor’s ability to cope with high wind loads and pressures.

Paul Hindley, Engineering Manager at Sonoco, said, “The installation of the Ramdoor at our Halifax facility is a game changer. It allows for quicker, safer, and more efficient movement of our large machinery and vehicles. This has enabled us to introduce changes to our operational procedures, creating more efficiency. This upgrade is part of our commitment to

Rob Howe, Technical Sales Engineer at Union Industries, said, “We are delighted to continue our long-standing partnership with Sonoco by providing them with a flexible and highly effective solution.”

“The Ramdoor offers superior performance and durability, and in this instance has allowed Sonoco to ensure that this external entrance can cope with increasing traffic flows, effectively future-proofing its requirements and allowing for future growth.”

During this phase, Makestation’s experts work with their clients to analyse workflow, space utilisation, and operational bottlenecks.

Following the survey, the team moves into the Layout and Packing Station Design Consultation phase. Here, the knowledge gleaned from the survey informs an in-depth design process tailored specifically to the client’s needs. The team works closely with the client to devise a layout that optimises space, ergonomics, and workflow. This consultation is crucial, as each warehouse has unique requirements depending on the scale of operations, types of goods being packed, and the specific challenges of the space.

Loadhog’s versatile dolly max system

Returnable transport packaging (RTP) has moved on significantly since the emergence of that retail staple, the metal roll cage. Manufactured from durable plastic, Loadhog’s Dolly Max Rolling Container System delivers more versatility, a safer user experience, greater manoeuvrability and improved vehicle fill.

Many retailers are turning away from single-use packaging and looking to RTP to provide sustainable and cost-effective transport of goods between their distribution centres and stores. While pallet loads are usually stretch wrapped on automated wrappers and ship from the DC, returning goods from the stores requires time-consuming manual wrapping or boxing up. Roll cages have helped overcome the drawbacks of pallets and boxes in the supply chain but they have their own disadvantages, being notoriously difficult to handle and often featuring sharp metal touchpoints.

Launched in late 2023, the Dolly Max Rolling Container System from Loadhog takes the humble roll cage to a new level. This modular system features the Dolly Max wheeled deck, which can be used in conjunction with containers (for segregated products), a foldable sleeve (for bulk items/uglies) or – with the addition of a shelf – a combination of the two in a hybrid solution for mixed goods. The sleeve is fixed to the Dolly Max by two footoperated locks avoiding the need for staff to bend down to secure it in place.

The Dolly Max also features a drop-down door for easy access with picking in warehouses and replenishing at store level. With its mix-and-match design, this is the most versatile rolling container system on the market, giving users the flexibility to

adapt to the fluctuating nature of goods within their supply chain. Loads can be secured with Loadhog’s reusable Half Euro Pallet Lid, which features retractable straps and an integrated tensioning mechanism. Other accessories include a quickconnect pull handle, a sleeve tray for containers to be stacked on and a tow hitch to link dollies in a train for easy manoeuvrability around warehouses and stores.

Easy access, one touch brake

The lightweight Dolly Max is easy to manoeuvre and features an easy-access, one-touch brake that is more ergonomic than the simple castor brakes found on roll cages. The ease of brake application encourages use, enhancing safety for employees, and the innovative mechanism ensures the unit remains still even on a sloped tail lift. The Dolly Max system offers 20% more vehicle fill compared to standard roll cages, reducing carbon footprint. In addition, the embodied carbon of the recycled

polypropylene system is significantly less than that of roll cages manufactured from coated metals, securing further sustainability gains. Also, the tare weight and footprint of the Dolly Max system enable it to be utilised on all vehicle types, even smaller sprinter vans.

As well as avoiding the need for a forklift or pump truck, the system can also be attached to AGVs (automated guided vehicles) for easy manoeuvrability around the DC. The system has been designed for fast deconstruction to ensure efficient returns, with containers nesting, sleeves folding, and the Dolly Max frame featuring castor cups for stable stacking. The return ratio is typically 3/1. Loadhog also offers labelling, tracking and branding options for all elements of the system to safeguard both packaging assets and goods. Of course, branding enhances the in-store aesthetic, especially if the packaging doubles up as a product display unit.

The versatility of the Dolly Max has resulted in a recent order for 10,000 units, which will be used for nationwide distribution of automotive products. Having supplied RTP solutions to many highstreet brands – including Harvey Nichols, Pets at Home, Sky, TK Maxx and Dunelm – Loadhog has considerable expertise in meeting the logistics needs of today’s retailers.

LOXrail transport system for packaging machines

LOSYCO’s floorlevel LOXrail system is used in numerous industries for production logistics, machine feeding and material flow. In addition, LOSYCO also designs and installs applicationspecific solutions for precise positioning of systems and machining centers weighing several tons. The German intra-logistics specialist has recently installed threetrack LOXrail lines in three plants of the globally active Klingele Paper & Packaging Group. The transport platforms are geometrically adapted to the plant layouts. Designed for a payload of 5.2 tons, the platforms carry packaging machines, allowing for precise positioning at the transfer points for various product lines. Thanks to the low-friction rail profiles and wheelsets, the entire load can be moved by hand by just one person. However, LOSYCO has also equipped the system for one Klingele plant with an automatic underfloor drive

unit. Locking bolts cemented in the hall floor allow for secure fixation of the platforms in place. The floor-level rail system requires no additional safeguards. The transport platforms themselves also feature criss-cross rails for automatic alignment of the belt stations and bundling machines. In this way, packaging from 400mm to 1m in size can be fitted without time-consuming changeovers. The new system has enabled Klingele to significantly reduce setup times and workload and increase flexibility in the production process.

Revolutionary ultrafast mould-making system to be unveiled at world’s biggest 3D printing exhibition

Inventors of a revolutionary new highspeed mould-making technology, which uses a pin tool with 28,000 pins to create a mould in around twenty minutes, have announced they will be unveiling it to the world for the first time on November 19th at Formnext in Frankfurt, Germany.

The PolyMorphic 28k consists of the pin tool plus a forming machine into which the pin tool is inserted. A 3D CAD model of the mould to be formed is used to move the pins into position.

The positioning of the pins is accurate to within 0.1mm.

The product, designed by Fyous in Sheffield, England, has been under development for the last five years.

Once locked into position the pins can withstand six tonnes of pressure, making them perfect for use in vacuum forming, composite layup, composite bonding, workholding, and moulding polyurethane (PU) products.

This ‘PolyMorphicTM moulding’ process takes around twenty minutes, which is about fourteen times faster that 3D

printing for an equivalent sized part.

Critically, once the pin tool has been used it can be reinserted into the forming machine to create a new mould shape with zero waste. There is no need to store the mould, just the 3D CAD model.

This new technology is set to revolutionise the world of prototyping, customisable production and complex tool holding.

Packaging machine manufacturer Schubert defies market conditions

Despite the adverse market conditions in the mechanical engineering sector, Gerhard Schubert GmbH achieved remarkable growth in 2023. With an overall performance of 320 million euros and an increase in turnover of more than 9%, the German packaging machine manufacturer is proving to be extremely resilient. As part of its Mission Blue Sustainability Initiative, the company is now focusing even more strongly on the research and development of environmentally friendly packaging technologies. The largest investment in recent years has been the completion of the new building complex at its headquarters – a showcase project not only in terms of climate protection, but also in terms of workplace design.

Throw open doors to young talent

The Young People in Print team, a group of volunteers dedicated to inspiring the next generation of employees in the print industry, supported companies from across the UK to throw open their doors on 23 October 2024 to welcome visits from local schools and colleges.

Schubert is clearly maintaining its leading role in the packaging industry – with steady growth for the thirteenth year in a row, even under very difficult market conditions. The Schubert Group has also continued its growth trend with an estimated overall performance of 400 million euros. The Group

now has around 1,700 employees, of whom some 1,200 work for Gerhard Schubert GmbH in Crailsheim. Despite a shortage of skilled labour, the company succeeded in increasing its core workforce and, with the help of increased productivity, successfully processed 2023’s high order volume. Production and assembly capacities have also been fully utilised so far this year and the order books are full until 2025. This is an extremely favourable starting position for innovative product developments, especially as the budget for research and development in 2024 is once again the largest single budget, representing 9% of overall performance.

Visit: www.schubert.group

Paul Stead, Sales at ASL Group and YPIP volunteer, stated, “We’ve been running open houses with individual printers, helping them to attract students from local schools and colleges to visit and explore what the print industry can offer them. While this approach has been welcomed, it’s clear we need to do something on a far broader scale if we’re going to truly make an impact. International Print Day seems the logical day to say to the education and careers system in the UK that the print industry is seeking new talent, come on in and see what we have to offer!”

International Print Day marked its 10th anniversary in 2024. It is an annual celebration that brings together printing professionals from around the world to celebrate the art, science and innovation of print.

The YPIP team aimed to offer a nationwide experience, where printers and their supply chain companies – from OEMs to substrates, inks, adhesives and software businesses – run open houses, inviting local students to visit and see what the print industry is all about.

The YPIP team was committed to linking companies to their local career hub so they could get local schools and colleges on board and plan the numbers visiting directly. It also provided an agenda for the day and a PowerPoint deck to support companies if required.

The US Government has just issued a policy paper on plastics pollution

The US government has launched a new policy paper entitled ‘Mobilizing Federal Action on Plastic Pollution: Progress, Principles and Priorities’ in which the US government details the current challenge facing law makers.

The paper states, “Plastic production around the globe has doubled over the past two decades. Plastic waste has also doubled in that time, and is now found almost everywhere on our planet, from floating garbage patches in the Pacific Ocean to nearly every waterline, coastline, and shoreline, including beaches and riverbanks.”

“Plastics are turning up in the stomachs of whales, birds, and other animals that ingest them. Communities near plastic production and processing facilities are confronted with toxic air emissions and chemical releases. Researchers are sounding alarm bells over the growing presence of microplastics in the human body and are concerned

that the ingestion of microplastics and exposure to plastics-related pollution are posing a growing risk to public health.”

The problem is clearly the plastic which gets out into the open environment, from which it cannot realistically be collected for recycling, composting, or anything else.

According to Michael Laurier, CEO of Symphony Environmental Technologies Plc, “The simplistic solution is to ban plastics, but plastic cannot and should not for the foreseeable future be banned, as it is in many cases the best material for the job.”

Base Structures create stunning new fabric façades for Printworks in Manchester

Base Structures is proud to announce our collaboration with Printworks and John Turner Construction on the groundbreaking redevelopment of Manchester’s iconic entertainment venue. This project features three distinct fabric schemes adorning both the internal & external elevations of the site.

The internal façade artwork, created by Manchester-based artist Alex Sylt, serves as a central public art piece within the venue. Utilising our large format fabric façade system and fabric printing expertise, we brought Sylt’s vision to life, adding a dynamic element to the venue's interior.

Working at this prominent city centre complex site posed challenges inside and out with restrictive pedestrian management which had to be managed with careful planning and limited access via the narrow surrounding streets. To overcome this, Base Structures engineered a steel frame on Dantzic Street, to install five large printed screens by hand. Also given the congested nature of the site and the intricacy of our works, careful co-ordination was essential, particularly while working alongside the digital ceiling installation.

removable and held with magnets, concealing all fixings. We were very happy to be able to develop an efficient system of work that resulted in a quality build, ready in time for the renovated Printworks grand opening.

Andy Traynor, Director at Base Structures and Head of Installations and Health & Safety, remarked, “We were delighted to be part of this artistic and iconic redevelopment of a prestigious city centre location. Embracing creativity, we have enjoyed being able to bring large format art to the public. This renovation project has created a truly unique immersive experience and destination attraction to boost the public engagement with the space.

Printworks boasts an impressive history, and was once the business premises of several news outlets. The site housed a printing press until the late 1980s, and through much of the 20th Century, was the largest newspaper printing house in Europe and overtime has become a popular venue for shops, bars, restaurants and events. Following this extensive renovation, it now features updated artistic façades and a new impressive digital ceiling, the largest in Europe.

The client required the internal artwork to be framed by a flashing surround with hidden fixings. We achieved this with innovative brackets and connections, incorporating fifteen speaker panels into a flush façade. These panels were designed to be

GasGrab®: The tool for lifting gas cylinders by hand

GasGrab® is a manual handling tool that’s proven to reduce the risk of injury when handling compressed gas cylinders. It fills an important gap in the risk assessment – how do you safely get the cylinder onto a trolley, or into its final position?

Gas cylinders are extremely awkward to handle without assistance. Common manual handling methods include: the ‘bear hug,’ ‘churning’ or even

dropping them to the floor and rolling them! All of these methods carry the potential to injure the operator and/or bystanders or cause an explosion, should they lose control of the cylinder and damage it.

Those using a GasGrab® however, have a much firmer grip on the cylinder and therefore, greater control over the operation. They can also lift using a naturally strong and ergonomic posture, putting less pressure on the back and joints and reducing the risk of injury. GasGrab® even enables team lifting, reducing the effort and risk even further.

GasGrab® was born from the welding industry, so that’s where we’ve traditionally focused our marketing. It’s become increasingly clear however, that the applications of packaged gases extend well beyond the field of metalworking alone. This must mean that there is a huge demand for GasGrab® in sectors that we’re simply not yet marketing to.

We decided that the time was right to go ahead and introduce GasGrab® to these new, untapped markets. To this end, Anticipate London 2024 was our first exhibition away from the metalworking industry. It made sense as a starting point, as it gave us the opportunity to interact with both health and safety and facilities professionals from an extremely wide range of sectors.

In fact, we were astonished to learn of a number of applications of compressed gases that we hadn’t yet even considered, such as in veterinary medicine, food preservation and scientific laboratories. Everyone that we spoke to at the exhibition was extremely complementary, so it’s very exciting to imagine where an expansion into these markets might lead.

Exhibiting at Anticipate London brought GasGrab® to

a much more diverse audience than we’ve ever had in the past. Through it, we gained valuable insight into where we can direct our marketing in the future. This will be extremely beneficial as we continue to grow our business and deliver our innovative product to exciting new industries.

Charles Day Steels unveils revolutionary Laser Bevel Cutting technology!

A pioneer in metal profiling, Charles Day Steels, proudly announces the launch of their progressive 50-degree Laser Bevel Cutting machine

This innovative addition to their extensive suite of laser cutting and profiling services promises to redefine efficiency and precision in metal fabrication.

One of the stand-out features of the new laser is its unparalleled versatility, enabling cuts at any angle up to 50 degrees from a 12kw laser power source. Set to revolutionise the industry with its ability to eliminate the need for manual grinding and weld preparation, this investment serves as a powerful complement to their existing Waterjet Bevel capabilities.

The new machine boasts a large 6,510mm x 2,600mm bed, allowing for the rapid processing of substantial bevel parts up to 40mm thick. This advancement ensures a seamless transition from cutting to assembly, offering drastically reduced postprocessing time and labour costs.

The ability to laser bevel cut offers two key benefits. First, it significantly cuts costs for downstream fabrication by providing parts that are already prepped for fabrication with weld preps. This eliminates the need for additional preparation, saving both time and money. Second, it efficiently handles parts that would otherwise require bevelling or countersinking through traditional machining methods, which are both expensive and time-consuming. By incorporating laser bevel cutting, the process becomes more streamlined and

cost-effective. This is particularly effective when dealing with harder material such as wear and amour plate which carry with them the challenges of machining harder materials.

Charlie Day, grandson of the Founder and Sales and Business Development Director at Charles Days, spoke about their latest investment, “With the launch of our new Laser Bevel Cutting technology, we are taking a significant step forward in our service capabilities by providing fabricationready parts in a single process. This addition means we can offer clients the very best value not just in our cutting service, but also through reduction downstream fabrication costs.”

Established in Sheffield, the city of steel, Charles Day continues to lead the way in profile-cutting innovation, leveraging over four decades of expertise and cutting-edge technology to serve their customers across various sectors, including construction, automotive, and aerospace, all with industry leading capacity and reliability.

Common Control Wiring Schemes for Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)

Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) are electronic devices used to control AC (alternating current) electric motors. They work by adjusting the frequency and voltage of the power supplied to the motor, which changes the motor’s speed, direction, and torque.

Most VFDs have screw terminals or pin headers labelled for both analog and digital input/output functions. Despite the prevalence of advanced network capabilities, many VFDs, particularly those used in smaller or remote settings, rely on digital input devices to drive their operation.

Typically, these digital inputs are generic and not dedicated to specific functions such as starting or stopping. However, you can assign functions to these signals by adjusting programmable parameters.

INDUS Engineering are the South’s leading providers of electrical engineering solutions. We specialise in a wide range of engineering services, including control panel manufacturing, special purpose machinery, and machine maintenance

Below, we explore some of the most common wiring control schemes for digital inputs.

What are the main types of VFD Control Wiring Schemes?

2-Wire Start-Stop Wiring

The two-wire circuit is the simplest wiring scheme for VFD control. It involves one signal to start a function and removing that signal to stop it. This is different from the three-wire start/stop latching functions, which we will discuss later.

There are two forms of two-wire functionality in a VFD: unidirectional and bi-directional. A single input can be used to drive the motor in either the forward or reverse direction, or two inputs can be used to choose between the two. These inputs are momentary, like a jog function, and are considered two-wire.

The basic wiring concept for 2-wire forward control involves connecting a single digital input

device to one of the digital inputs on the VFD, typically one of the first I/O terminals.

■ For 2-wire reverse control, the single digital device is wired to the same or another input, and the parameter values are set to select the direction of motion when the run command is given.

■ For bi-directional 2-wire control, two different digital input devices are used and wired to two digital inputs on the VFD, with the parameters controlling the method of operation and wire placement.

3-Wire Start-Stop Wiring

The 3-wire control scheme is similar to the 2-wire scheme, but slightly more complex. This scheme is derived from a common circuit known as ‘latching’ or ‘seal-in,’ in addition to 3-wire. Both start and stop buttons are provided for convenient latching control, with the signals not needing to be sustained like in 2-wire.

Drainage teams underground

National drainage contractor Lanes Group plc has used its specialist cutting equipment to clear pipes in a power station located in Europe’s largest man-made cavern under a Welsh mountain.

The company’s drainage engineers drove its service vehicles, including a jet vac tanker, down a tunnel into Mt Elidir Fawr to carry out the work on drainage pipes at Dinorwig hydroelectric power station. The facility, the largest scheme of its kind in Europe, has six 300 megawatt generators that can reach full power output in just 16 seconds to meet spikes in electricity demand.

First Hydro Company, which operates the power station, called in Lanes to clear calcite and

silt that had built up in drainage pipes located in the main inlet valve gallery, where six giant valves feed water into turbines.

Amy Pritchett, Engineering Geologist for First Hydro, said, “The calcite deposits, in particular, was beginning to compromise the gallery’s

drainage system, so the work Lanes has done for us has been very important. Conventional methods of clearing the pipes, such as pressure washing and rodding, didn’t work, so we needed the specialist equipment and skills Lanes has to provide an effective solution.”

Minerals held in water that seeps out of the cavern’s rock walls have been deposited in channels and pipes running the 150m length of the main inlet valve gallery, greatly reducing their capacity. Six enclosed clay pipes and six open channels, each up to 10 metres long and between 100mm and 150mm in diameter, had to be cleaned.

Advances in water jetting

The first WJA Trade Show in September 2024 provided a strong focus on key issues in the water jetting industry, including health & safety, training & innovations like robotic systems. The first water jetting exhibition of its kind held by the Water Jetting Association took place at the StoneX Stadium, North West London, on 12th September 2024.

The free event had a strong international flavour with businesses from across Europe joining British exhibitors to showcase latest technologies and applications. WJA experts and exhibitors also gave talks during the one-day event, which followed the WJA annual general meeting being held on Wednesday 11 September.

Visitors to the event came from industrial sectors that rely on water jetting applications, including drainage and water utilities, industrial cleaning, construction, maritime engineering and petrochemicals processing. WJA Director, Leanne Smith, said, “We’re very

pleased to have attracted such an exciting range of exhibitors to WJA Trade Show 2024. We made it a free event because we wanted as many people from across the sectors that use water jetting to join us in shaping the future of our industry.”

Water jetting contractors, equipment manufacturers, hire specialists, PPE suppliers, and training providers were among the wide range of exhibitors putting on the water jetting show of the year.

Information about key developments in WJA support for the water jetting industry, including updates to the Red Code of Practice for drain and sewer jetting, and the launch, in 2024, of the new Pressure Washer Code of Practice, known as the Purple Code, were also available.

Graf UK delivers a belter of a rainwater harvesting tank at historic cricket club

The installation of a Graf UK rainwater harvesting system at Chiswick Cricket Club has delivered a hat trick of firsts.

Initially, it was the first time that water consumption consultants Ecoprod had specified a Graf UK system. Secondly, it was the first time water management systems contractor Jamie Vacher had installed a rainwater harvesting system. And thirdly, the project is the first of its kind in Middlesex.

Chiswick Cricket Club was founded in West London in 1853 and has recently undergone a major redevelopment in line with the English Cricket Board’s (ECB) emphasis on sustainability.

Part of this focus has been on increasing their facilities throughout the year without increasing the use of mains

water, as well as thwarting the increasing occurrence of temporary use bans which mean that during hosepipe bans the club can only water its cricket square.

Through accessing the ECB’s County Grants Funding, Middlesex Cricket approved the grant contributing towards the cost of Chiswick Cricket Club installing a rainwater harvesting system, which is believed to be the largest belowground system in cricket in the country to date.

Chiswick CC will monitor its performance until the end of the summer to better understand how rainwater harvesting on this scale can benefit a cricket club, with the potential for the project to be used as a sustainability exemplar for the ECB.
