DO YOU KNOW YOUR EXPLOSION RISK?

No matter what you’re processing – chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, biomass, wood products – if it produces dusts or powders, there’s a high probability you have an explosion risk. All it takes to interrupt plant productivity is a combustible material, oxygen and an ignition source.

For more than six decades, IEP Technologies has provided the right explosion protection solution for every type of process application. From cyclones and dust collectors to milling equipment and dryers. We can design a protection system and surround you with 24/7 service and support. Protecting plant starts with knowing your explosion risk.

Explosion suppressor: eSUPPRESSOR™

The IEP Technologies eSUPPRESSOR™ is a high-rate discharge suppressor used for explosion suppression and isolation systems. Its electro-mechanical operation is unique to the industry, as no pyrotechnic devices are required for activation.

The eSUPPRESSOR™ has standard features that include pressure monitoring, lock out tag out capability and LED indication of device status. A key benefit is that all the safety functions are fully monitored, which is not possible for any device employing pyrotechnic actuators. The eSUPPRESSOR™ design & manufacture has SIL2 third party certification.

Spark Detection: Atexon® Passive Protection

The ‘Next Generation’ Atexon® Spark Detection and Extinguishing systems by IEP Technologies have recently received third party approval by Factory Mutual (FM), meeting the latest detailed requirement of FM3265:2020. For UK users the equipment is also certified to UKCA, UKEX and VDS certification is in the pipeline. The innovative Atexon® SD300-EX series spark detector is a world first being able to detect visible light (VIS), near infrared light (NIR) and infrared light (IR), with a 180° field of view. The benefit being it has the ability to see different ignition sources though material layers, even with dense material flow, with reduced hardware.

Typically, the most cost-effective explosion protection method in terms of hardware, install and maintenance is IEP Technologies’ passive protection devices. These include vents, flameless vents and isolation devices. Explosion relief panels are calculated to vent a deflagration, and in doing so prevent the rapid developing pressure. This reduces the chance of vessel rupture, and structural damage. Similarly flameless vents work by the same principle, allowing the heat and pressure dissipation but differ from a traditional vent by mitigating the flame from passing into the atmosphere outside the flame arrestor. This type of venting method has all the benefits of traditional venting but has the added benefit of reducing the chance of possible injuries to personnel. Vent sizing is based on several different factors, call us today to discuss your options.

Legal opinion on sustainability in company accounts

Social Value International (SVI) and Social Value UK (SVUK) held an inaugural roundtable on 21st March with business networks and legal and financial experts to discuss the implications of the legal opinion, commissioned by SVI, from leading barrister George Bompas KC. The participants at the event also learnt of the example of Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce where the directors have added a note to the accounts highlighting the impact of their contribution to climate change in their financial statements.

The new opinion reminds directors and auditors that they have a positive legal duty to apply themselves with proper care and diligence and must be aware of any

Aura and CarbonQuota announce partnership

Packaging sustainability consultancy Aura and carbon management data specialist

CarbonQuota recently announced a new, pioneering partnership designed to give brands and retailers a broader and more holistic view of sustainability in their packaging.

CarbonQuota’s carbon calculator will sit within Aura’s e-halo platform, allowing organisations to instantly calculate the carbon impact of their packaging as well as utilising e-halo’s existing recyclability functionality at the touch of a button, using live real-time data.

This will proactively enable clients to make more informed decisions across all elements of packaging sustainability and help them plan towards their corporate Net Zero targets – ensuring they choose the optimal materials and designs, and get it right first time.

The CarbonQuota calculator automates the process of calculating CO2e emissions, which can otherwise take life cycle analysis experts several weeks to determine. This provides brands and retailers with evidence and validation of their efforts towards continuous improvement and using more sustainable packaging options.

It will seamlessly integrate with e-halo, which tracks and analyses recyclability, tax liabilities, legislative compliance, and sustainability by country/state, as well as an extensive reporting suite, across the billions of combinations and configurations of packaging components available globally.

The addition of carbon reporting meets the needs of progressive clients as well as the mandatory obligations of the future.

possible impacts on the financial report flowing from sustainability-related issues. It explains – for the first time – the relationship of using the true and fair requirement in the context of sustainability issues, with accounting standards, to consider issues such as asset impairment and constructive obligations in relation to the business’ previous year’s activities.

Participants, including a former Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King, leading UK business networks, such as the British Chambers of Commerce, Federation of Small Businesses, and the Institute of Directors, who joined forces to explore the implications of the legal opinion on the ‘true and fair’ requirement for company

directors to include sustainability issues in their financial statements.

Said Mervyn King, the Former Governor of the Bank of England, highlighting the need for integrated reporting, “The financial and non-financial assets of a company are integrated 24/7 operationally. To report them in two silos is divorced from reality. The board should do an integrated report showing this integration in clear, concise, and understandable language.”

Achema 2024: Yes, chlorine!

Although chlorine is an integral part of industrial disinfection processes, handling the chemical is dangerous. In the worst-case scenario, incorrect dosing or direct contact with chlorine can cause damage to the lungs, eyes and skin.

The solution from Lutz-Jesco: MINICHLORGEN, an electrolysis system that manufactures sodium hypochlorite from harmless salt tablets and makes it available for disinfection processes. The system deployed in a range of contexts, including mobile waterworks in Ukrainian war zones, was on display at Achema 2024, the internationally leading trade fair of the process industry held in Frankfurt am Main between 10-14 June 2024.

MINICHLORGEN Skid I can be made ready for use in a short space of time. Lutz-Jesco supplies all the system

components including the electrolysis unit, salt dissolving container and chlorine tank – fully wired and mounted on a plastic frame. The system works in the following manner: The user places commercially available salt tablets in a 30kg container and switches the system on.

The system produces salt water with a salt content of between 2-3%. The water flows past titanium anodes and cathodes in a pipe. The electrolysis current causes chlorine gas and hydrogen gas to form at the electrodes. The subsequent reaction produces a sodium hypochlorite solution with a concentration of between 0.5-0.7%. The solution can then be fed by a dosing pump directly into the disinfection process via an injection nozzle – for example for treatment of drinking water.

Italy’s Globalpesca selects Dematic

Warehouse automation and software specialist Dematic has recently signed a contract with Globalpesca – a leading Italian provider of frozen foods and food services to the hotel, restaurant, and catering industries – to ensure operational efficiencies at a new low-temperature warehouse for frozen goods.

“Important factors in our decision process included knowing that Dematic has many years of experience developing automation solutions for the hospitality and catering industry and it has deep experience in the storage of food items at low temperatures,” explains Andrea Ruffoni, the supply chain director at Globalpesca, adding, “And when it comes to stacker cranes for pallets, we

were confident that Dematic was the right company to partner with.”

Headquartered northwest of Milan in Gravellona Toce, Italy’s Piedmont region, Globalpesca SpA is a familyowned business whose roots date back nearly 125 years.

Due to rapid growth in the hospitality and catering industry in Italy, food service companies must be able to manage higher order volumes and be prepared to continuously improve service levels. Globalpesca recognised that automation would support its operations by bringing improvements in two key areas: better planning and managing of its inbound product process and better handling in storage and restocking of its picking areas.

The Dematic solution is going to be installed in a new warehouse facility adjacent to Globalpesca's distribution centre in Gravellona Toce. The solution calls for a self-supporting structure designed to meet the load and temperature requirements of the warehouse, the second temperaturecontrolled warehouse adjacent to the distribution centre.

Charles Day Steels unveils revolutionary Laser Bevel Cutting technology!

Apioneer in metal profiling, Charles Day Steels, proudly announces the launch of their progressive 50-degree Laser Bevel Cutting machine.

This innovative addition to their extensive suite of laser cutting and profiling services promises to redefine efficiency and precision in metal fabrication.

One of the stand-out features of the new laser is its unparalleled versatility, enabling cuts at any angle up to 50 degrees from a 12kw laser power

source. Set to revolutionise the industry with its ability to eliminate the need for manual grinding and weld preparation, this investment serves as a powerful complement to their existing Waterjet Bevel capabilities.

The new machine boasts a large 6,510mm x 2,600mm bed, allowing for the rapid processing of substantial bevel parts up to 40mm thick. This advancement ensures a seamless transition from cutting to assembly, offering drastically reduced post-processing time and labour costs.

The ability to laser bevel cut offers two key benefits. First, it significantly cuts costs for downstream fabrication by providing parts that are already prepped for fabrication with weld preps. This eliminates the need for additional preparation, saving both time and money. Second, it efficiently handles parts that would otherwise require bevelling or countersinking through traditional machining methods, which are both expensive and time-consuming. By incorporating laser bevel cutting, the process becomes more streamlined and cost-effective. This is particularly effective when dealing with harder material such as wear and amour plate which carry with them the challenges of machining harder materials.

Charlie Day, grandson of the Founder and Sales and Business Development Director at Charles Days, spoke about their latest investment, “With the launch of our new Laser Bevel Cutting

technology, we are taking a significant step forward in our service capabilities by providing fabrication-ready parts in a single process. This addition means we can offer clients the very best value not just in our cutting service, but also through reduction downstream fabrication costs.”

Established in Sheffield, the city of steel, Charles Day continues to lead the way in profile-cutting innovation, leveraging over four decades of expertise and cutting-edge technology to serve their customers across various sectors, including construction, automotive, and aerospace, all with industry leading capacity and reliability.

For more information regarding Laser Bevel Cutting and Charles Day’s services, or to request your free bevel sample, please get in touch with their team today.

Creatives shun AI as cheating, says new research

Creatives are continuing to play it safe when it comes to using AI and avoiding it in the belief that it’s a ‘creative cheat’, according to new research from Designit, the Wiproowned global experience innovation consultancy.

Some 84% of creatives see AI as merely a helpful assistant, and a significant minority believe strongly that using AI as part of the creative process amounts to cheating.

The findings come from a Designit poll that canvassed

1,200 creatives, including leading industrial, product and UX designers, on their feelings about using AI as part of their creative processes.

Qualitative feedback included one respondent likening AI to ‘an enthusiastic junior prospect with exceptional math skills’.

Another respondent commented that the use of AI was inevitable but likely to be abused in the creative sector in the same way ‘as steroids are to the fitness industry’.

AI-based waste and ESG data solution launched by Resordinate

Serial climate-tech entrepreneur Dr Michael Groves has launched Resordinate, a cutting-edge data service that helps large organisations unlock value, insights and auditability in their operational waste streams and management contracts. Resordinate has grown out of his experience founding and building Topolytics, a pioneering waste data analytics business.

Groves said, “Resordinate builds on experience and knowhow, responding to the rapidly growing corporate demand for scalable and sophisticated ESG data collection and analysis. We overcome the challenge of processing and analysing large volumes of complex and messy data from waste contractors and other sources.”

Resordinate enables sustainability and reporting teams in large enterprises to create live, actionable and auditable data on operational waste streams and secondary raw materials. This is a growing challenge for

corporations that have identified waste and circularity as material issues, particularly now with enhanced scrutiny via sustainability-linked loans and ESG reporting frameworks such as the CSRD. In all cases, the quality and auditability of data is crucial – which is where Resordinate comes in. Its data pipeline service brings confidence to sustainability reporting and the measurement of performance against waste, resource use and carbon targets.

Groves added, “Traditionally businesses have had to rely on one-off, manual data analyses of waste streams which is time intensive and expensive. Resordinate is built around the idea that to turn waste into a resource, an organisation needs to monitor this material as it is generated and flowing through and out of operations. Resordinate manages the process of delivering high quality insights in a cost efficient and scalable manner.”

Recycleye wins FANUC award

FANUC UK has underlined its commitment to AIpowered robotic waste picking company Recycleye by extending its exclusive UK deal with the tech innovator, as well as internationally recognising its achievements at the FANUC Global Partner Awards. The event, which took place in Japan in November 2023, saw Recycleye win one of seven Global Partner Awards for Innovation. In further evidence of FANUC’s faith in Recycleye’s technology, the two companies have recently extended their exclusivity agreement, meaning that Recycleye remains the only UK company that FANUC UK supply to for recycling applications. Recycleye will also continue to benefit from a commercial and technical partnership with FANUC throughout its current phase of growth and development.

revolutionise the waste sector by automating the detection and sorting of mixed recyclables. FANUC has been instrumental to the company’s rapid success since day one, working closely as a strategic partner to de-risk Recycleye’s offering to the market.

Founded in London in 2019 with just four members of staff, Recycleye now employs over 50 people and is the European leader in AI/robotic waste picking technology. It has an installed base of more than 25 systems across the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain and Germany, where its technology is helping to

Combining its proprietary AI vision technology with FANUC 6-axis LR Mate robots, the Recycleye Robotics system increases sorting accuracy by up to 12% and improves line output by up to 10%, helping waste operators to boost their bottom line and providing a solution to ongoing labour shortages in the waste management industry. At the FANUC Global Partner Awards ceremony, the company was praised for its commitment to innovation, moving from a start-up business to a recognised leader in AI waste sortation in just four years. The judging panel also praised the ability of the Recycleye system to be rapidly retrofitted into existing waste facilities.

The poll findings from practising creatives chimes with those from a smaller student survey carried out as part of Designit’s recent AI residency at the School of Visual Arts which revealed that future designers see a reliance on AI as cheating.

Miguel Sabel, global head of strategy and sustainability at Designit, said, “For many designers and creatives, the job is part and parcel of their wider identity, so the suspicion towards AI that our poll revealed is understandable. The current conversations around which elements of the creative profession are likely to be automated by AI exacerbate the tendency to keep AI at arm’s length from the creative and use it only for safer, admin tasks.”

Pickering Electronics’ latest high power reed relays

Leading manufacturer of high performance reed relays, Pickering Electronics showcased its comprehensive range of reed relays for semiconductor test – including its latest high-power reed relays, Series 144 – on the company’s booth at the Korea Test Conference 2024, taking place Tuesday July 2nd, on the third floor of The-K Hotel in Yangjae-dong, Seoul, Korea.

Hosted annually by the Institute of Semiconductor Test of Korea, this 25th Korea Test Conference provides a platform for experts from academia, research institutes, and industry to exchange research results and technology. The conference focuses on the testing and application of semiconductors, both memory and non-memory, aiming to strengthen competitiveness and revitalise the domestic semiconductor testing industry.

Semiconductor testing methods include DC parametric testing (at various levels of current and voltage) and AC parametric testing (at different frequencies) – both to ensure the device meets the required specifications – and functional testing to ensure that it operates as intended. This means the ATE must be capable of applying a variety of test conditions. However, since the probe station may have only a few probes (two is fairly standard), the ATE must be able to switch between multiple test conditions and channel the test results into the appropriate signal conditioning circuitry – which is where reed relays, as controllable switching devices, prove invaluable.

Drivetech launches driver training course to boost minibus safety

Drivetech, part of The AA, is on a mission to improve safety while traveling by minibus with the launch of its latest dedicated driver training course. Minibus Safe Drive has been specifically designed to support minibus drivers with the unique range of skills required, as well as improve driver and passenger wellbeing.

With minibuses in frequent use across the UK by businesses, local authorities, and education providers (for much relied on transport for employees, communities and pupils), safety on the road remains a top priority.

Yet, those behind the wheel of a minibus find themselves requiring a unique set of skills, and often receive little or no training. Drivetech’s latest course targets this skills gap in training and enables organisations to fulfil their duty of care to drivers and passengers.

From specific operation of the vehicle, through to how to react in an emergency, rules of the road and dealing with vulnerable passengers, the driver training specialist’s course provides a holistic look at minibus driving. Importantly, it acknowledges the high level of responsibility minibus drivers face and the duty of care they have under health and safety regulations to ensure the minibus is fit for purpose and operated safely.

As well as completing sufficient driver training, it’s important to review licence and insurance suitability for driving minibuses.

Anyone driving a minibus needs to check their licence category is in line with the purpose for which they are driving, who the driving is taking place for and the date which they passed their driving test. In addition, businesses, schools and local authorities should check their insurance policies provide the right cover.

76 Additive invests in latest HP MultiJet Fusion 5620

The5620 is the very latest MultiJet Fusion (MJF) printer from HP, installed at 76 Additive’s new headquarters in Cambridgeshire, an investment made possible by the huge increase in demand that 76 Additive has experienced in the past 18 months.

Rob Johnson, founder of 76 Additive, says, “We’re all about production of end use parts using industrial 3D printing technology. We step in when our clients require the capacity, surface finish, repeatability and lower costs that their in-house printers cannot achieve. MJF was developed from the very beginning as an end use production technology, our clients are regularly amazed at what is possible.”

Reflecting on the 3D printing industry, Rob says, “Unfortunately the 3D printing industry, particularly the printer manufacturers, has a bad name for overselling itself, which is a shame because it blinds potential customers to the real benefits. Whether our clients are experienced in 3D printing or new to it, they deal directly with technicians and designers that understand the technology and will give them an honest appraisal of whether it is correct for their requirements. We have clients
