My name is Caron Mcluckie, I am a 56-year-old mother of three children, Theo, 27, Emile, 20 and Esther, 18. We live in Stockport and for nearly 30 years I have worked as a mental health social worker. In January 2016, Emile had suffered a spinal cord stroke which had left him paralysed from the chest down. Emile has coped with this traumatic event; his resilience is astounding. Emile has no bladder or bowel function, and we must selfcatheterise to empty his bladder.

It soon became clear, once we got into our daily routine, that clothes did not fit him properly while he sat in the wheelchair. More importantly, even the

comfortable joggers that Emile likes to wear did not provide easy access to catheterise. After looking around the market I couldn’t find anything suitable, so I designed my own bespoke joggers with a unique opening to enable comfortable dressing and self catheterising. They are higher at the back to avoid sagging while sitting and transferring to ensure everything is covered! The joggers have a slim fit leg (which is fashionable presently) and we will also have a regular fit for people with more muscle mass on their legs, to ensure a better fit for different disabilities and all shapes and sizes.

Blink OMS was launched in 2011 to provide a simple, intuitive & affordable paperless system for independent opticians. Features include; Patient Recalls, Practice Diary, Clinical Data Recording, Dispensing and eGOS. Being completely web enabled, Blink OMS can be used on any device and from almost anywhere and so makes accessing your key practice information quick and easy.

The latest eGOS feature makes submitting your GOS forms smooth and (relatively) painless. Used by both high street and domiciliary opticians, the system

has so far been used to submit over 200,000 GOS forms to PCSE.

Now with over 150 users and prices ranging from just £50 to £145 per month, Blink OMS is fast becoming the first choice for practices new to electronic record keeping, as well as being a highly recommended option for independent opticians looking to migrate from outdated desktop solutions. Ask the Blink team about switching from your current provider.

have manufactured and distributed fall prevention and detection products for over 25 years. We specialise in products for one-to-one care, or small groups in a Care Home or Hospital. Our systems are robust, easy to set up and use, and have a proven track-record in helping to reduce falls, in domestic and professional care establishments.

How can they help reduce falls?

Many falls occur when a person at risk from falls leaves their bed or chair, particularly during the night. By detecting an exit from the bed or chair early a carer or guardian gains time to attend and help the person, usually preventing the fall.

What options are available?

Medpage supply a diverse range of equipment for detecting bed and chair exit. There are for example, simple bed alarms, chair alarms, or multiple use products for combining bed and chair monitoring, to allow the person to move from their bed to their chair. There are systems that use a cabled pressure mat sensor connected to an alarm controller, or pressure mat sensors with a self-contained alarm transmitter to signal a radio pager. Carer alarm notifications can be by a single or multiple user pager or alarm receiver, or an external alarm device. You can find out more at: www.easylinkuk.co.uk/ product/product-fall-detection

A small investment in care home furniture can lead

Rise and recline chairs enable residents to sit with their feet elevated and their backs reclined. This is extremely comfortable, plus a great position for circulation, joint pain and relaxation. To change position, just press a button; good news for pressure sore avoidance. The same applies when the resident is ready to leave the chair… tap a button to gently stand. Usually, care home staff are responsible for helping residents sit, get comfortable and stand. And let’s be realistic, this is demanding physical work. So not only do rise and recline chairs improve quality of life for the resident, they are immensely beneficial for staff too.

As for adjustable beds, it’s the same story. Residents may need to sleep at an elevated angle, or with their feet raised, depending on health needs. They may require help getting out of bed, and some adjustable beds do that too. Again, these are aspects of care that usually involve staff bending at awkward angles.

The impact of appropriate care home furniture can be measured in monetary terms; better health saves money. But more importantly, they can be assessed by the quality of life of residents and staff alike. The simplest changes can have far reaching consequences.

Life without boundaries

Alife without boundaries is now a very real possibility for many amputees with the new Freedom QUATTRO Knee by PROTEOR.

This latest Microprocessor Controlled Knee (MPK) from PROTEOR harnesses the power of Hyper Active Real Time Technology (H.A.R.T) Control Technology to track individual walking styles and respond to changes as fast an anatomical knee. It’s the first MPK to provide a distinctly personalised experience resulting in a custom gait which users describe as the ability to ‘walk like me’ but that’s not all this powerful MPK has to offer.

MPKs can have a significant effect on what is achievable for those that find using prosthetic limbs for higher impact activities like golf, cycling, and dancing, challenging. The Freedom QUATTRO offers 20 customisable, activity-specific modes; such modes allow the behaviour of the knee to be tailored based on individual needs whilst performing a given activity. The result is a knee that supports you to not only take part in but also enjoy your favourite activities. A great example of this is Golf Mode, which limits the amount your knee flexes while playing golf.

Modes are easily controlled from the Freedom Innovations patient app. The app gives patients a degree of control over the device by allowing you to fine-tune it and keep your movement comfortable by

altering settings like resistance by up to 10%. Clinicians also have a specialised app – Gait Lab, allowing simple set up in clinic for both the prosthetist and patient, minimising time spent in clinic and giving you more time to do the things you love.

The Freedom QUATTRO also features key functionality like on-board keypad control allowing you to check battery status, manually switch activity modes or set and release flexion lock, IP67 water ingress certification, and a manual lock conveniently located in the app or via the knee keypad.

Jade, a patient who recently trialled the MPK said, “The QUATTRO knee has genuinely changed my life, I’ve never felt as normal as I did with it! Its capabilities were amazing, I even went back to the gym, which

DISABILITY MATTERS

Digital care management system streamlines patient care

Healthcare Matters recognises ingenious practices in healthcare systems and this month would like to award AutumnCare the Company of the Month Award for outstanding computerised care innovation.

AutumnCare is a revolutionary electronic care management system designed to eliminate time-consuming paperwork in residential and domiciliary care settings. Providing total integration between care planning, medication compliance management, risk reporting and family communication on one electronic platform allows for person-centred care and clinical governance.

Chris Sharman, Sales Manager AutumnCare explains the modus operandi, “We help care services improve their efficiency, strengthen compliance, and reinforce the delivery of best practice care, all through the implementation of innovative digital solutions. We are making many lives better.”

Before establishing AutumnCare, years of meticulous research looked at frontline care industry needs in conjunction with user-friendly electronic databases. Company founder and Executive Chairman Stuart Hope launched AutumnCare in 2002 to appreciative care companies across the UK.

Beverly Walton Care Home Manager from Whitehaven Rest Home noticed the difference to her care staff team immediately, “We changed to AutumnCare in January 2019 and there were so many positives. The team really listen to feedback, changes are made and we are involved in the development process.”

The AutumnCare Desktop records staff profiles, staff competency reviews and access to eLearning staff training portals. Staff can safely administer patient medication on the electronic medication administration record (eMAR) and restock at the touch of a button on AutumnCare Medicate. The Medication reporting system is fully complaint with The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) The public body of the Department of Health and Social Care. This effective

reporting device eliminates risks of missed medication incidences and allows for trained nurses to complete their rounds quicker.

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) the care regulatory body has reviewed AutumnCare’s electronic healthcare system and commented, “Care records were personalised and had been regularly reviewed to reflect people’s care needs. Care Plans contained information about people and their care needs.”

Person-centred planning is paramount to AutumnCare and the AutumnCare Desktop allows for comprehensive reporting from resident profiles and care plans. The AutumnCare Family system links to the AutumnCare desktop by allowing family members to sign care plans and runs a portal to post photos of residents to family members.

Internet outrage and hacking are everyday mitigated risks in electronic healthcare across the UK.

AutumnCare has offline functionality providing safe continued access in the event of an outrage allowing staff to focus on primary care needs of residents and patients. AutumnCare fully understands the risks posed by cyber-crime including data hacking and malicious malware. A dedicated team of IT experts conduct regular, robust data security testing to ensure the

smooth running of the systems and are available for user technical support.

AutumnCare is certified by The Cyber Essentials Scheme run by the National Cyber Security Centre.

The AutumnCare Desktop is also available as a mobile app. Nurses can quickly access the app from the point of care allowing for a streamlined care reporting system.

AutumnCare is a worthy recipient of our Company of the Month Award for its comprehensive electronic care management system designed by nurses for nurses. Chris Sharman explains why he thinks AutumnCare is the leading digital solution package in the elderly care sector, “We have the most comprehensive clinical document set on the market. Unrivalled by our competitors, this contains hundreds of forms, charts and assessments to capture detailed data on your residents. Embedded clinical best practice tools and prompts throughout the system ensure the delivery of the highest quality care at all times. We are also able to develop bespoke interfaces and custom-made forms and assessments.”

PRIVATE IMPLANT DENTISTRY COMPANY OF THE MONTH

Expertly teaching implantology to the dentists of tomorrow

Students can become an anonymous number in a welloiled machine. We offer personalised mentoring from industry experts to help students get the most out of their studies. Maria Negro is our wonderful dedicated postgraduate student support manager who supports our students’ wellbeing.”

Furthermore, clinicians have access to a three-day cadaver course on complex surgical implant procedures. Dr Martyn Cox recently completed the cadaver course and was astounded by the volume of content covered across three days, “We had access to sinus lifts and grafting and were able to successfully plant three implants in situ across two days!”

Healthcare Matters is always looking to showcase companies exceeding expectations and this month is no different. We are delighted to honour VSSAcademy with our Company of the Month Award for services in private implant dentistry.

VSSAcademy provides a pathway of implant training for registered private dentists practicing across the UK. Established in 2002 by renowned oral surgeon Dr Fadi Barrak, the Academy is now based across Coventry, Birmingham, Glasgow and London. Dr Fadi Barrak is a Fellow of the International Team for Implantology (ITI) and Senior Lecturer at The University of Lancashire. As course lead for the MSc Clinical Implantology and the Certificate in Implant Dentistry, he is responsible for the cutting-edge curriculum content. The MSc comes so highly recommended that places fill up quickly, Alan Goldie Managing Director confirms, “Our courses offer comprehensive up-to-date training in implant dentistry. We recommend early bird 2023 applications now as our intake is filling up quickly!”

The MSc runs across two academic years on a part-time basis allowing registered dentists to balance

clinic work with further studying. Hybrid learning is offered throughout the UK and Ireland with a fully blended learning curriculum.

With expert supervised teaching and clinical patient surgeries, dentists leave the course with an MSc in Clinical Implantology from UCLan. The MSc has received rave reviews from previous students like Ashish Pandit, “The course has great faculty members and I had heard great reviews from other professional colleagues. The part-time nature of the course allowed me to navigate clinical practice with further specialised knowledge of implants.”

VSSAcademy provides the knowledge modules from hand-picked faculty associates and UCLan partners with the latest clinical trial research and academic journal reviews to inspire dissertation choices. It is the perfect professional collaboration and with the personal touch that VSSAcademy offers students are well looked after. Alan Goldie explains why pastoral care is so important to the students, “We want to create a lifelong connection with our Postgraduate students. Universities are often blindsided by their own business philosophies.

Undergraduate dentistry pupils have now been given the exclusive opportunity to study a short course on Medicine for the Dental Professional usually only reserved for second year MSc students. It is this ability to think outside the box by offering bespoke courses that has afforded VSSAcademy an excellent dynamic reputation within the industry. The nature of implant surgery requires access to human tissue and students are lucky enough to have access to a specialist unit at University of Warwickshire & Coventry to learn and practice surgical skills in a safe environment.

This clinical access ensures that VSSAcademy is at the forefront of medical and digital changes in implant surgery providing students with the latest vanguard technology.

Dentists that have been restoring implants for years often come on the cadaver course and are inspired by complex case placing. The course gave Dr Nicola Ritchie a new ‘thirst for knowledge.’

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is essential in dentistry to enable dentist professionals to offer a full range of surgical expertise and VSSAcademy offers a leading certified pathway for the dentists of the future.

Nutritional iron deficiency

The world’s soils (UK included) are very low in minerals. There is a direct link between soil health and human health, starting with the nutritional value of crops and “In the last ten years there has been a decrease in iron concentrations in green leafy vegetables by 43%” according to Dr Zoue Lloyd-Wright BA. (Hons)., BSc (Hons), Ph.D. Further studies show absorption of iron supplements in healthy individuals as low as 37%, and many consumers report unwanted side effects. This can be due to the condition of the iron atom as well as other variables such as gastric acid production.

Centred Solutions

Agrowing number of community pharmacies are turning to hub and spoke models for repeat prescription dispensing.

Centred Solutions, experts in hub and spoke technology, has seen significant growth in the uptake of the model over the last 12 months with pharmacies investing in automation and becoming early adopters ahead of proposed legislation changes.

Managing Director, Paul O’Hanlon, said Paydens Pharmacy, Medipharmacy and Pearl Chemist were among the first to start using variations of the FLOWRx Hub automated solution in centralised dispensing facilities where medication is dispensed for pharmacy spokes. Benefits of this central fill model include freeing up time in store for face-to-face patient care, reducing the risk of human error in the medication dispensing process, significant cost savings coupled with the ability to grow revenue.

Other pharmacies using FLOWRx Hub include Lalys Pharmacy, Peak Pharmacy, Sigcare, AR Pharmacy and Lo’s Pharmacy.

“The beauty of our solution is it is scalable so customers can implement it in stages at a relatively low cost. Taking the first step on the journey is enough to impact and grow your business, freeing up capital to then invest in the next level of automation. There are options our there for everyone, that will allow pharmacy to operate more efficiently,” explained Mr O’Hanlon. Find out more: www.centredsolutions.co.uk or enquiries@centredsolutions.co.uk.

ExPD: Barcode tracking, data capture and collection systems

ExPD showcased their MICS system at this year’s Pharmacy show. This is typically used in unmanned pharmacies for controlling medical stock and prescribing to patients. The system allows for an accurate track of meds providing visibility of stock levels, reorder state, use by dates, recalled items etc. The system directly accesses the DM&D database for consistent NHS product info and uses GTIN barcode scanning to ensure accurate data recording.

Additionally, ExPD demonstrated integration to smart cupboards/ lockers to provide ease of access to meds and the removal of manual keys and locks. Secure access to the cupboards is granted by the

MICS system to dispense medicines where set criteria is met.

Some of the benefits of using MICS include:

: Reduced reportable clinical incidents

: Increased speed and accuracy when issuing meds

: Gain complete visibility and

HEALTHCARE WATER PRODUCTS COMPANY OF THE MONTH

A safe and energy efficient drinking solution for mental healthcare

Healthcare Matters would like to award Hotspot Titanium our Company of the Month Award for its innovative solutions in healthcare water products.

Hotspot Titanium evolved from Inventum: A Dutch company primarily interested in innovative ventilator heaters and water appliances. With its headquarters still based in The Netherlands supporting mainland Europe there is now a corresponding sales office in Sheffield supporting UK customers. Jerremy de Jongh, Marketing Manager elaborates further, “We have fifty years of specialised filtered drinking water experience. Hotspot Titanium develops, manufactures, and

distributes high-quality conditioned water taps, heaters and chillers for various target groups. We aim to offer our customers an energy efficient way to stay hydrated. For each sector: healthcare, workplace and domestic residential, we have developed a unique range of products. Depending on the type, our products deliver a combination of boiling, chilled and ambient water. We also provide customer service and with warehouses in both the Netherlands and the UK, we can deliver quickly.”

Hotspot Titanium has developed a ground-breaking product: Qura for the healthcare sector in mind. The Qura range offers instant filtered chilled water and hot controlled water from titanium tanks for residents and staff of residential care and mental health homes. The tanks are water regulations advisory scheme (WRAS) certified offering assurance and peace of mind. With a two-button colour coded halo interface the operations are user-friendly for all residents. With Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards in mind the water temperature can be pre-programmed using smart electrics from android apps or iOS-remotely.

Titanium is one of the strongest, non-corrosive materials and is resistant to limescale residue offering integrated protection against microbial contamination. This mineral stabilisation technology uses solenoid valves to safeguard against the risk of contamination. With five filtration levels in a single filter cartridge and seven bypass levels, the Qura water filtration is exceptionally high quality. The filters are easily replaced which don’t necessitate the main water supply being turned out, for ease and convenience of larger residential care homes. The Qura chiller can offer upwards of 30% savings on electricity costs, which is advantageous during the current energy crisis, allowing care homes to save money on other aspects such as wellbeing activities for the residents.

One of the biggest problems in care homes is dehydration amongst residents due to memory loss or other health

conditions. The chillers can produce between 95-300 glasses of chilled water per hour perfect for usage during meal times negating worries of dehydration. The chillers have been ergonomically designed with health and safety in mind and there are no sharp edges, allowing for reduced ligature.

With a 20-year warranty offered on the Qura range and priority call-outs that are guaranteed to all care homes, the product offers peace of mind for all managers and staff.

The Hotspot Titanium team will be showcasing its product range, including the new Qura bowl: an indestructible sink and tap at this year’s Design in Mental Health Show from the 7th-8th June at the Coventry Building Society Arena.

With production taking place in the Netherlands, the company is able to monitor its CO2 footprint and ensure that they provide the lowest possible CO2 emissions.

A new development for the company, Goelst’s latest offering is the G-Motion electric curtain track system.

“This features a technically advanced motor design to suit almost any application – it’s been received very well so far,” Mark explained.

G-Motion’s modular design means the system has an outstanding set of standard functionalities, including self-setting end positions, curtain protection systems, numerous switching modes and speed options, tandem motor systems, and a variety of input voltages. Notably, through the variety of protocols G-Motion contains, it is easily integrated with home automation systems. 2022 has been a very positive year for Goelst, with the completion of a number of interesting and technically challenging projects and participation at trade events. We asked Mark about how the last 12 months has

been for the company. “It has been a very positive year! In what is still an extremely uncertain market, we have exceeded our expectations yet again.” Mark continued, “The G-motion programme has been complete for over 12 months, but due to cancellations over the last two years, 2022 was the first opportunity we have had to introduce the product to the trade at an exhibition, and the general reaction was extremely positive.”

Speaking once more with Mark about how the company feels about receiving our Industry Excellence Award, he told us that he feels, “We’re honoured! It’s amazing to be recognised for the products and services we offer and I feel immensely proud of the company and staff – It’s a real team effort at Goelst, we are nothing without the dedication and support of our staff.”
