Help close the performance gap in your roof with Insulfix Track

SIMPLY SIMONBOX: IP66 Floor Box

We commissioned independent testing on PIR insulation frictionfitted between rafters and were stunned when we saw the result –the roof performed 179% WORSE than expected!

When the insulation boards were re-fitted using Insulfix Track the roof rig delivered the expected thermal performance.

Insulfix Track is designed to make the job of fitting insulation boards between rafters as quick, simple, and effective as possible. Track firmly fixes the insulation boards between rafters without the need for battens or cans of spray foam. It allows offcuts to be fitted –improving sustainability by using more of the expensive insulation rather than throwing it in the skip.

Airtightness, thermal imagery and HTC (Heat Transfer Coefficient) testing were carried out to determine the thermal performance of an insulated roof rig. HTC is being proposed as a method of testing the real-world performance of new and existing buildings in line with building regulations.

The full independent test report is available on our website. If you’d like to find out more about using Insulfix Track to lock in the thermal performance of your insulation, we’d love to hear from you.

Protek ESP Panels: A gamechanger for the Timber Build Sector

In the ever-evolving timber build sector, the introduction of Protek ESP Panels marks a significant advancement in material preservation and sustainability. Protek ESP (Edge Sealant Protection) Panels is designed to combat one of the most persistent issues in timber construction: water damage and delamination.

Water ingress is a major concern for plywood and other sheet materials used in construction. When water penetrates the edges of these materials, it can lead to swelling, warping, and ultimately, structural failure. Protek ESP Panels address this problem head-on by providing a robust sealant that protects the edges of plywood, OSB, MDF, and other sheet materials from moisture. This not only extends the lifespan of the materials but also enhances their structural integrity.

Additionally, the product has been rigorously tested and approved by BM TRADA, ensuring it meets high standards of performance and reliability.

The application process is straightforward, requiring only a brush or roller to apply the sealant to the edges of the panels. This ease of use makes it an attractive option for builders and contractors looking to improve

efficiency on-site. Furthermore, the sealant dries quickly, allowing for faster project completion times.

Protek ESP Panels is available in various colours, including a distinctive red that provides a clear visual indication of treated areas. This feature is particularly useful for building professionals and inspectors, ensuring compliance with waterresistance standards and regulations.

In conclusion, Protek ESP Panels represent a significant innovation in the timber build sector. By preventing water damage and delamination, they enhance the durability and longevity of timber materials, contributing to more sustainable and resilient construction practices. As the industry continues to prioritise sustainability, products like Protek ESP Panels will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of timber construction.

FIS launch best practice ‘walls as a system’ guide

The Finishes and Interiors Sector (FIS) has launched a new Best Practice Guide – Walls as a System – to help specifiers, designers, installers and building owners ensure compatibility of compliant test evidence across building components assembled into larger supersystems.

The guide addresses a critical issue in modern construction: the tendency to design and specify building components in isolation, without considering how they interact as part of larger systems. By introducing the concept of ‘Walls as a System,’ FIS is promoting a more holistic approach to building design and construction, ensuring interfaces, penetrations, glazing and doors have compatible and compliant test evidence.

Developed with input from technical experts and wider group of peer reviewers across the sector, including ASDMA, DHF, GIRI, GAI, GPDA and PFKG, this guide represents a collaborative effort to provide clear, relevant, and concise design guidance. It aligns with the RIBA Plan of Work and the Building

Safety Act Gateways for Higher Risk Buildings, emphasising early engagement with manufacturers and contractors.

You can download the Best Practice Guide – Walls as a System here: https://www. thefis.org/membership-hub/ publications/best-practiceguides/walls-as-a-system

Winter of 2024-25 tipped to be the biggest yet for heat pumps in commercial premises

With British Summer Time already becoming a distant memory in 2024, experts are predicting this could be the biggest winter yet for the installation of heat pumps in commercial premises.

Heat pumps have been at the forefront of the government’s campaign for the decarbonisation of UK homes, including a £7,500 grant on offer to homeowners in England and Wales as part of the Boiler Upgrade Scheme.

commercial heat pumps, expects that trend to continue.

CoSourced strengthens growth trajectory with head of innovation appointment

Specialist HVAC and Fire and Smoke Control sub-contractor, CoSourced Group, has appointed Ryan Handyside as Head of Innovation to lead on the company’s integration of new technologies across the group’s service lines (pictured).

But the need for decarbonisation in business premises, including the use of heat pumps, has generated less noise.

Now, however, as increasing number of businesses announce Net Zero plans and climate road maps, scrutiny on whether they turn those plans into reality is growing – and with it an interest in heat pumps.

Craig Moreton, Controls and Heat Pump Systems Lead at Trane UK, a company which manufactures, sells and rents

He said, “We are seeing increased interest from businesses in heat pumps, especially in the rental market which allows them to try out heat pump systems without dipping into their capital expenditure budget.”

“Our view is that rental could be the key to encouraging businesses to decarbonise the heating of their premises and to overcome the myths and misconceptions that have been holding them back until now.”

TerraQuest and Planning Portal say new National Planning Policy Framework means local government and developers now face land finding challenge

TerraQuest, the operator of Planning Portal has welcomed the publication of the new National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF), while highlighting that local government and developers now face the practical challenge of identifying specific plots of land for development.

The revised NPPF is intended to support the government’s aim of delivering 1.5 million new homes –370,000 a year – over the current parliamentary term.

The publication of the new NPPF comes just a day after TerraQuest and Planning Portal published a white paper which argues that the single biggest constraint on new homes is the availability of land. Plotting the Future goes on to assess the factors that constrain land availability, from planning constraints, to infrastructure,

economic and market factors, as well as existing development, examining how recent government announcements have to a greater or less extent impacted these constraints.

The new NPPF implements the government’s ‘grey belt’ policy, requiring local government to review green belt allocations where needed to meet housing targets, while maintaining a brownfield-first approach.

TerraQuest’s whitepaper concludes that recent announcements are likely to reduce historic constraints on land availability somewhat. For developers and

local authorities charged with delivering the 1.5 million new homes the government is calling for, this means quickly identifying suitable land and making use of third-party land finding services, such as that offered by TerraQuest.

Drainage teams go deep underground to help keep hydropower flowing

Lanes Group plc has successfully used specialist cutting and drainage equipment to clear mineral deposits from pipes in the Dinorwig hydroelectric power station, located within Europe’s largest man-made cavern under a Welsh mountain. The work has helped restore vital drainage systems supporting this unique facility’s ability to meet electricity demand spikes.

National drainage contractor Lanes Group plc has used its specialist cutting equipment to clear pipes in a pumped storage power station located in Europe’s largest man-made cavern under a Welsh mountain.

The company’s drainage engineers drove its service vehicles, including a jet vac tanker, down a tunnel into Mt Elidir Fawr to carry out the work on drainage pipes at Dinorwig pumped storage hydroelectric power station.

Graf UK delivers a belter of a rainwater harvesting tank at historic cricket club

The installation of a Graf UK rainwater harvesting system at Chiswick Cricket Club has delivered a hat trick of firsts.

Initially, it was the first time that water consumption consultants Ecoprod had specified a Graf UK system. Secondly, it was the first time water management systems contractor Jamie Vacher had installed a rainwater harvesting system. And thirdly, the project is the first of its kind in Middlesex.

Chiswick Cricket Club was founded in West London in 1853 and has recently

undergone a major redevelopment in line with the English Cricket Board’s (ECB) emphasis on sustainability.

Part of this focus has been on increasing their facilities throughout the year without increasing the use of mains water, as well as thwarting the increasing occurrence of temporary use bans which mean that during hosepipe bans the club can only water its cricket square.

Through accessing the ECB’s County Grants Funding, Middlesex Cricket approved the grant contributing

towards the cost of Chiswick Cricket Club installing a rainwater harvesting system, which is believed to be the largest below-ground system in cricket in the country to date.

Chiswick CC will monitor its performance until the end of the summer to better understand how rainwater harvesting on this scale can benefit a cricket club, with the potential for the project to be used as a sustainability exemplar for the ECB.

The facility has six 300MW generators that can reach full power output in just 16 seconds to meet spikes in electricity demand.

First Hydro Company, which operates the power station, called in Lanes to clear calcite and silt that had built up in drainage pipes located in the main inlet valve gallery, where six giant valves feed water into turbines.

Minerals held in water that seeps out of the cavern’s rock walls have been deposited in channels and pipes running the 150m length of the main inlet valve gallery, greatly reducing their capacity.

Six enclosed clay pipes and six open channels, each up to 10 metres long and between 100mm and 150mm in diameter, had to be cleaned.

First building inspector competency certification scheme gains UKAS accreditation

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) has granted the UK’s first accreditation of a building inspector competency scheme. The accreditation has been awarded to the Building Safety Competency Foundation (BSCF) for its Building Control Inspector (BCI) competence certification scheme. UKAS carried out its assessment of the BCI competency certification scheme against the internationally recognised ISO/IEC 17024 standard (Conformity assessment: General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons).

Successfully completing the BCI certification scheme is one of the three prescribed registration routes under the Building Safety Regulator’s (BSR) new Building Inspector Competency Framework (BICoF). The Building Safety Act 2022 makes BICoF registration mandatory for all classes of building inspector, working in both the public and private sectors, in all types of buildings across England and Wales.

Whilst the BICoF does not provide an exhaustive list of competency criteria, assessments under the BCI certification scheme include a review of the relevant qualifications, knowledge and experience academic/ technical qualifications, as appropriate to each inspector’s role. Continuous professional development is another important aspect, as building inspectors must be reassessed every four years in order to maintain their BICoF registration.

Highlighting the potential significance of this accreditation, Lorna Stimpson, CEO of BSCF said, “The BCI certification scheme rigorously evaluates the competence of building control professionals across all inspecting roles and specialisms. In addition to helping building inspectors meet mandatory BSR registration requirements, the BCI certification scheme aims to raise standards of technical competence throughout the industry.”

Aladdin EasyFit Isolator: Saving time and minimising downtime at Royal London Hospital

Keeping vital healthcare departments running smoothly requires innovative plumbing solutions, especially when it comes to maintenance and repairs. A recent project at the Royal London Hospital exemplifies how Aladdin EasyFit Isolators played a crucial role in minimising disruption during a critical equipment installation.

The challenge:

CSS Facilities, contracted to install a Da Vinci robotic arm washer within the hospital’s Clean Room, faced a significant challenge. Minimising downtime in this sterile environment was paramount. Traditionally, isolating hot and cold water supplies for such repairs would have necessitated shutting down the entire Clean Room, a logistical nightmare impacting sterilisation of vital hospital equipment.

The Aladdin EasyFit Solution: Determined to find a time-saving solution, CSS Facilities discovered Aladdin EasyFit Isolators. These innovative isolation valves offered a key advantage: the ability to isolate water

supplies without shutting down the entire system.

Benefits realised:

▲ Reduced downtime: Aladdin EasyFit Isolators allowed CSS Facilities to complete the installation without major shutdowns, saving valuable time and minimising disruption to hospital operations.

▲ Simplified installation: The valves’ ease of use – clamping directly onto live pressurised pipes (hot or cold) – eliminated the need for complex procedures like draining, pre-planning and complete shutdown.

▲ Reliable performance: Aladdin EasyFit Isolators are WRAS approved and come with a reassuring 10-year warranty.

Flexspeed: High volume dishwasher technology that adapts to staff capacity

Large scale conveyor dishwasher systems are designed to wash thousands of pieces, quickly and efficiently. However, their speed can cause stress if staff are over stretched. Now Winterhalter has introduced Flexspeed technology for its MT flight and rack conveyor systems. It adapts to how staff are operating, so that they don’t get stressed – and the machine keeps working as efficiently and cost effectively as possible.

The issue may be at the front of the machine, for example if loading slows down for some reason, which

Aladdin EasyFit Isolator allows new metering technology to overcome challenges for South West Water customers

South West Water (SWW) has announced a successful collaboration with Kier Group to improve the efficiency of water meter installations. This partnership has addressed a previous hurdle for some customers where there is no isolation, or the isolation valve has seized or failed.

The key to this success lies in the utilisation of Aladdin EasyFit Isolators. These innovative isolation valves act as a crucial tool for Kier Group’s metering team, allowing them to install meters in situations that would have previously resulted in a frustrating ‘unable to meter’ feedback for the customer.

Wendy Coomber, SWW Metering Manager at Kier Group said, “By implementing Aladdin EasyFit Isolator valves, Kier Group has expanded its capabilities to serve a wider range of SWW customers

and ensure they benefit from having a water meter.”

The use of water meters is crucial for both water conservation and accurate billing. By overcoming the stopcock obstacle, Kier Group and SWW are demonstrating their commitment to providing efficient and accessible metering solutions for all their customers.

The OTL Group toasts 40 years of success

can cause gaps between batches of dirty wash items. Or it could be at the end of the wash cycle, if staff aren’t able to keep up with unloading. In both cases, not only are the operators stressed but also the machine will not be operating efficiently, wasting energy and money. Flexspeed overcomes these problems.

In the loading zone, the Flexspeed front mode detects gaps between racks or, in the case of a flight type system, empty spots on the conveyor. Flexspeed gradually reduces the conveyor belt speed until the gaps are gone so that the machine is fully utilised, with no loss of capacity. Smaller gaps optimise performance, thus reducing costs, and give better rinse and drying results. They also lead to less waiting time in the removal area.

An Aberdeenshire company which exports its world-beating products across the globe is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

The OTL Group’s interests are diverse spanning offshore cleaning, firefighting foams, foam testing and infection control products. Since opening for business in 1984, it has grown to encompass four divisions, over 200 products and almost 30 staff.

Managing Director David Evans explained, “Right from the start, we have always been about four things – great products, being as environmentally sustainable as possible, great people and great customer service.”

“In the early days, we worked from small facilities in Torry, Aberdeen, before expanding into our purpose-built facilities at Gourdon. We now have our offices, warehouses, workshops, lab and testing facilities and we’re actively exploring how we can expand the site to facilitate further growth.”

“We started out with our Sobo range of rigwash and industrial oil degreasers and

then expanded into firefighting foams which are used to suppress fires offshore and in high-risk sites like chemical plants, as well as in the marine and aviation sectors. We’re known for developing highly effective, specialist products.”

The group’s infection control business, Bio Technics, is headed up by David’s daughter Hannah. She commented, “Bio Technics export about two thirds of our products around the world. We manufacture our patented Endurocide Antimicrobial Plus disposable hospital curtains for use in hospitals as well as a range of alcohol-free hand sanitisers, wipes, and surface cleaners right here in Gourdon.”

‘Help us promote construction as career for women’ plea to educators

A leading Midlands housebuilder is calling for more to be done to encourage girls and women to consider a career in construction as a new mentoring scheme gets under way.

Sophie Horgan, director of Horgan Homes, said schools, colleges and the industry needed to change the narrative around construction to increase the number of females in the industry and avoid a huge waste of potential talent.

Sophie is one of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ female leaders in construction, spearheading the I Am A Housebuilder campaign launched by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for SME housebuilders. The campaign sees women wanting to go into construction matched with female mentors.

She said, “By far the biggest problem we have in recruiting women is that so many are still not aware that

construction is a career path that is open to them. It is still assumed that building is something that boys do, and we really need everyone to work together to change that.”

The mentorship programme is sponsored by Saint-Gobain Interior Solutions. It has been open to women aged 21 or older who are entitled to work in the UK and who have at least four years’ experience and/ or qualifications in construction or housebuilding.

GTEC brings portable renewables training to the Isle of Man

GTEC, part of the United Living Group, has been working with Construction Isle of Man and the Manx government on an exciting project to bring MCS accredited renewables training to the Isle of Man (IOM). Prior to GTEC’s involvement, there was no provision for this on the island.

GTEC identified the lack of training for installers looking to make the move into renewables. This, coupled with IOM’s ambitious Net Zero targets, gave GTEC the perfect opportunity to bring its industry-leading courses direct to the IOM, saving heating engineers the trouble and expense of leaving the island to up-skill.

In its Climate Change Plan, the IOM government has committed to

reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 and has set two challenging interim targets: a 35% reduction by 2030 and a 45% reduction by 2035. They aim to decarbonise the island’s electricity supply by 2030 and to generate an extra 30 megawatts of renewable electricity locally by 2026. The call for renewables, therefore, is great.

DHF advises on the important role of Environmental Product Declarations

Tamworth-based trade association, Door & Hardware Federation (DHF) is once again stressing the importance of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD). An EPD is an independently verified and registered document that communicates transparent and comparable information about the life-cycle environmental impact of products. In summary, it measures the environmental ‘footprint’ of a product.

EPD demonstrate the results of a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), detailing ‘cradle to grave’ environmental impact of all processes involved with the manufacture of a product. This can include extraction and processing of raw materials, transport, all elements of the manufacturing process, dismantling and waste disposal.

Back in June 2017, DHF was widely considered ‘ahead of the game’ in launching 14 generic EPD (in collaboration with ARGE) – locks, door and window handles, hinges (single axis), lock cylinders, sliding door gear, window fittings, door closers, panic exit devices, shutter hardware, letter boxes, padlocks,

glass door gear, electromechanical hardware, and push button locks – and since then, the federation has been educating and informing its members about the role and growing importance of EPD in the sustainability process; a complicated subject, DHF has been plugging the ‘information gap.’ This has effectively enabled members of the Building Hardware Group to meet changing market conditions.

Currently, the UK has set a target to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
