DMN-WESTINGHOUSE rotary valves and diverter valves

Setting new standards for the dairy industry

Product quality, product safety. The guiding mantra in dairy production. That’s why the world’s leading dairy producers rely on the products and solutions developed by DMNWESTINGHOUSE. Our rotary valves and diverter valves offer the highest level of precision engineering, preventing bridging and possible contamination during conveying processes. At the same time, they guarantee unparalleled cleanability, drastically increasing product safety while reducing downtime for maintenance and repairs.

Taking up the challenges

Through years of experience and valuable partnerships, DMN-WESTINGHOUSE has gained a deep understanding of the global dairy industry and its challenges. We have earned the trust of an industry where hygiene, cleanability, and safety are paramount. In our R&D department, we leverage innovative technology, setting the dairy industry standard. In our factories, we control every step in the manufacturing of heavy-duty rotary valves and diverter valves.

Always compliant

Just like you, we strive for unparalleled quality and consistency. A commitment underscored by our compliance with current certifications, including USDA, EHEDG-ED Class II and ATEX. Whether it’s about infant formula, lactoferrin, (plant-based) milk powders, caseinates or probiotics, at DMNWESTINGHOUSE, we help you maintain the highest quality standards in dairy.

Heavy-duty, finest quality

Many producers of dairy products, ranging from baby formula to lactoferrin, rely on our renowned heavy-duty rotary valves. These valves come in two types and various sizes: the drop-through type (AL/AXL/AML) and the blow-

through type (BL/BXL/BXXL). They comfortably comply with the stringent hygiene standards the dairy industry needs to maintain. All product contact surfaces consist of food-grade material, polished to perfection. They are all radiused and polished to an astonishing 0,8 μm Ra (150 grit), and the rotor vanes have precisely chamfered edges preventing the build-up of conveyed dairy powders.

MZC-series: standard for safety, hygiene and cleanability Cleaning intervals will vary depending on which dry dairy substances are processed. To reduce cleaning time and resulting downtime, we developed the MZC rotary valves based on our AL— and BL-series. The MZC-I and MZC-II are equipped with supporting rails so the rotor and end cover can be removed. The MZC-II opens on two sides for unprecedented easy access and superior cleanability.

These valves facilitate premium process handling, raising the bar in cleanability, hygiene, and safety. The rotor body clearances are set automatically when the rotary valve is closed after cleaning.

Options for ultimate safety and reliability

Adding innovative solutions can take your dairy production to the next level.

We offer:

S Rotor Interference Detection (RID 3.0) is our third generation, detecting unwanted contact between the rotor and body or end covers. This prevents major damage and provides insight into product contamination. RID 3.0 offers 50 times more accurate resistance measurement than its predecessors.

S Shaft seal flow control boosts the reliability of our AL and BL heavy-duty rotary valve series even more. Precise flow control

prevents the build-up of powder residue on the shaft seals, minimising the risks of seal failure, contamination, leakage, damage and downtime.

S Rotary valves equipped with the Sanitary Air Seal (SAS) outboard bearing shaft seal minimise leak risks due to pressure changes inside the valve, thus maintaining the right airflow.

Cleaning-in-place (CIP)

For maintaining hygiene and preventing contamination, cleaning-in-place (CIP) is indispensable. CIP is about cleaning the interior of pipelines, valves, tanks and other equipment without the need for disassembly. In the dairy industries it’s a necessary, often automated method to maintain the highest levels of hygiene and prevent contamination.

Your perfect Niro replacement

Handling dry dairy solids is about maintaining the strictest standards and requirements 24/7. Are you currently operating Niro rotary valves needing replacement any time soon? Our NR347 rotary valves (NR = Niro replacement) match the outer dimensions of the Niro valves operating within your system, which means they are usually a perfect fit. The NR347 is based on our heavy-duty AL250 model and is made of stainless steel. Meeting all hygiene and safety standards, the NR347 will prove its value day in and day out.

Our diverter valves: boosting efficiency and hygiene

Diverging and converging powders or granulates is a daily routine in dairy production. Safety, efficiency and maximum hygiene are key. That’s why our 2-TDV, 3-TDV, M-TDV, and GPD diverter valves are very much in demand.

S Our 2-TDV and 3-TDV diverter valves are designed for quick disassembly and streamlined distribution. The 2-TDV effortlessly handles two destinations, while the 3-TDV targets three.

S The M-TDV efficiently handles the pneumatic transport of powders or pellets, diverging and converging flows to multiple destinations. Available in different sizes, offering up to 14 ports.

S Our diverter valves are the perfect choice for systems needing regular, quick cleaning with minimal downtime.

Compressed Air, Uncompromised:

RENNER’s

Energy-Efficient Innovation Leads the Industry

In this issue of Best Practice, we would like to feature RENNER Kompressoren as the winner of our Product Innovation Award.

RENNER’s success lies in its innovative strength and uncompromising quality, consistently driven by customer-focused solutions and an outstanding price-performance ratio. Companies from all industries across many sectors including woodworking, metalworking, food processing, the automotive industry and many more have all relied on RENNER compressors for many years because its reliable, industry-best compressed air technology is the most energy-efficient, robust and cost-effective on the current market.

Quality made in Germany, RENNER was founded by Annette and Bernt Renner in 1994, and has grown to become a global compressor manufacturer using state-of-the-art production and design processes. These compressors from Güglingen, Germany, are used all over the world, and come available in more than 6,000 models.

We spoke to Matthew Dalton, Area Sales Manager UK North about what problems their products solve within the industry:

“Our products help to provide compressed air to multiple industries all over the globe. We also provide oil-free compressed air by way of our Oil-Free Compressors which can be used in industries from food packaging and universities right through to medical applications and surgery equipment. RENNER Kompressoren strive to be at the forefront of the market. Although we are a younger company in comparison to our competitors, we are very close to, if not better in some cases – both developmentally and performance wise.”

RENNER’s range of Oil-Free Compressors include some of its most successful products. Both their SCROLL compressors and their water-injected screw compressors are specifically designed for the highest demands for pure compressed air, delivering 100% safe, highly-efficient and reliable results.

When using the RENNER SCROLLline

compressors, the air is compressed completely via a rigid and a rotating scroll compression element resulting in a low pulsation compressed air flow. Take for example the new SL-NEO oil-free compressor series which acts a replacement to the previous SL-I and SL-S series.

Setting new standards in performance and ease of maintenance, the NEO series features an optimised design with accessible components and a quick-change motor mount for safe V-belt replacement. Furthermore, enhanced air cooling ensures reliability and extends system life. Each model adapts flexibly to your needs, offering quiet operation with optional sound insulation, space-saving design, and multiple tank options with an integrated pressure switch and sensor allowing for fast setup and adjustment. SCROLL models include a pre-filter grid and ball valve with pressure gauge for simple monitoring and safe maintenance.

“We are always looking to the future and this includes monitoring any potential changes in laws or procedures which may affect our products and/or our customers. We are always growing/adapting with the changes in the industry. High-Pressure compressors are becoming more in demand and RENNER have a wide range of high-pressure compressors to choose from starting from our 15bar standard screw compressors through to high-pressure booster compressors. RENNER also has a range of high-pressure compressors which do not require any pre-pressure compressor before which can produce FAD at 18-20bar. Our SCREW compressors boast standard pressures of 6 up to 15bar which are not too common in the industry. These compressors can be used for small laser projects at the high-pressure band and are becoming a very popular product for us,” added Matthew.

As well as oil-free and SCREW compressors, RENNER’s innovative product range also includes Control Systems, Piston Compressors, Compressed Air Treatment, Compressed Air Tanks/Hoses, and Consumption Analysis services. What’s so unique about RENNER is that they understand that one size doesn’t fit all. The team works extremely hard to

understand each client’s needs and the requirements of their specific industry when it comes to air compression. There is however one common theme throughout the range – energy efficiency!

Whether frequency-controlled, equipped with a refrigeration dryer, mounted on a compressed air receiver, or configured as a complete station — every RENNER system is built with energy efficiency at its core.

“We have a very dedicated R&D team that reach out to our colleagues in the field for updates on up-and-coming products, what potential a certain product has, etc. They then take this information to create and promote new products. From top to bottom, the aim is to be successful and a well-respected company within our industry, something we are beginning to see the benefits of.

Over the next five years, we believe the expansion of compressor manufacturers direct in the UK market is inevitable. Having more acquisitions by compressor manufacturers will be interesting to follow as well as how the distributor market reacts. There will be/ already is an active industrial market for compressor distributors, working closely with manufacturers can be a risk for a distributor but can also be rewarding. The key is the trust and relationship between manufacturer and distributor – something that we here at RENNER pride ourselves on,” said Matthew.

RENNER’s exceptional commitment to engineering excellence, sustainability, and customer-focused design is something to be admired. The company’s philosophy of combining robust German engineering with responsive service and short lead times exemplifies the kind of forward-thinking innovation we aim to celebrate here at Best Practice.

The Role of Harmonic Reduction Chokes, Motor Chokes, and Sinewave Filters in HVAC Applications

Introduction

HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems are essential for indoor air quality and comfort in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. The UK HVAC market is thriving—in 2024, it was valued at USD 6.68 billion and is projected to reach USD 10.28 billion by 2030, according to Grand View Research. Urbanisation, climate concerns, and the push for energy efficiency drive this growth.

Modern HVAC systems increasingly use Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) to control fans and pumps. While effective, VSDs introduce electrical harmonics, voltage spikes, and electromagnetic interference (EMI), which can impact reliability and raise operating costs. To counteract these effects and comply with EMC standard EN 618003, external components like harmonic reduction chokes, motor chokes, and sinewave filters are essential.

sinewave filters, reduces these risks. Sinewave filters convert the VSD’s pulse-width modulated (PWM) output into a near-sinusoidal waveform, significantly lowering EMI and voltage

Benefits include:

S Extended motor lifespan due to reduced voltage peaks

S Lower bearing currents, minimising early failure

S Better EMC compliance through reduced

S Improved efficiency and reduced motor heat

S Lower acoustic noise, crucial in environments like hospitals and offices

Challenges with IP65/66 Drives

Harmonic Reduction Chokes for Efficiency and Compliance

VSDs generate harmonic currents that can overheat transformers, motors, cabling, and switchgear, and cause interference in nearby equipment. Harmonic reduction reactors—also known as line chokes— address this by smoothing the input current, lowering total harmonic distortion (THD), and aiding compliance with EMC regulations. This results in increased energy efficiency and reduced strain on electrical infrastructure.

Motor Chokes and Sinewave Filters for Reliability

The high-speed switching in VSDs can degrade motor insulation and cause premature failure. Installing motor chokes between the VSD and motor, or using

As HVAC systems move towards IP65/66-rated drives to suit dusty or moist environments, integration challenges arise. These robust drives often lack internal space for additional chokes, requiring external enclosures with adequate thermal management. HVAC installers must therefore use compact, high-IPrated chokes that can be directly mounted and maintain EMC compliance without sacrificing space or reliability.

Cable Length and EMC

Compliance

dV/dt stress and EMI, making compliance with EN 61800-3 more complex.

To address these issues:

Use sinewave filters to smooth voltage waveforms and reduce motor winding stress

Implement proper grounding for a lowimpedance earth

Apply line reactors to reduce transient voltage spikes across longer cables

Consider the use of unshielded cables if sinewave filters are employed, potentially cutting installation costs

Other Operational Issues

Installers must also deal with:

S Harmonic-induced inefficiency, addressed with line reactors

S EMI that can disrupt nearby electronics, reduced by chokes and filters

S Voltage reflections and high-frequency noise in long cable runs, managed with sinewave filters

S Motor noise, also mitigated by converting PWM signals to sinusoidal waveforms

Many VSDs are designed for motor cable runs under 5 meters, but HVAC systems often need much longer connections in large buildings. Long cable runs increase

Some manufacturers offer verified data on VSD and cable combinations, helping installers select compliant solutions quickly.

Conclusion

Chokes and sinewave filters are crucial for optimising HVAC system performance. They ensure energy efficiency, reduce wear on components, and help meet EMC regulations. As HVAC applications become more complex—with IP-rated drives and extended cable lengths—choosing the right filters and chokes becomes essential. Manufacturers must respond with compact, effective products that meet modern system demands.

FedEx announces switch from diesel to HVO to reduce linehaul emissions in UK

Federal Express Corporation, the world’s largest express transportation company, is now using biofuels in its linehaul trucks at three UK sites. Over 170 tractor-trailer trucks at locations in Parkhouse (80), Marston Gate (54), and Atherstone (38) will refuel with hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) under a two-year deal with Crown Oil, which will supply at least four million litres annually.

Switching to HVO delivers certified lifecycle carbon emissions savings of at least 80% compared to diesel. FedEx began

using 100% HVO in UK operations in October 2023, following trials in the UK and Netherlands. These pilots confirmed HVO as a preferred biofuel to support FedEx’s transition away from diesel across its European road network.

"The UK is the first country where we’re scaling HVO use, and we hope this marks a permanent shift," said James Richards, Senior Manager Road Network Operations UK. "With this agreement, our fleet will cover around 36,000 miles weekly on alternative fuel, advancing our 2040 carbon-neutral target."

In addition to trucks, 16 trailermoving tugs at the same sites will also begin using HVO. While some ground service equipment is now electric, HVO offers a viable diesel alternative where electrification isn’t yet feasible.

Live storage to manage stock efficiently

A combination of different types of storage can create a smooth flow through a warehouse to support the efficient fulfilment of stock.

Variable pick frequency of items has led to a mix of adjustable shelving for slower moving items, with Carton or Pallet Live Storage racking often chosen for fast-moving items. The advantages of having live storage for fast and mediummoving items include having storage and retrieval sides cleanly separated, which means goods can be stored undisturbed on one side and retrieved on the other side of the flow rack.

The goods run independently along a flow lane in the live storage racking due to an inclination of the roller conveyors, following the ‘First In, First Out’ (FIFO) principle.

Live storage presents a large number of products at the pick face within a minimal footprint, provides the flexibility to change pick slot sizes to meet changing needs, occupies minimal floor space and offers a high number of flexible picking slots which are adjustable in terms of size and location.

Picking efficiency can be further improved with complementary technologies such as Pick-by-Light for high picking speeds with low error rates. Pick-by-Voice systems allow order pickers to keep their hands free and concentrate undisturbed on picking. Companies that predominantly trade

large and bulky goods use Pick-byTerminal, where data is transmitted by radio to a terminal permanently installed on the industrial truck.

The range of storage types required to handle different pick frequencies is all available from BITO Storage Systems. Shelving, pallet racking, live flow storage and plastic containers are all part of the storage and picking solutions supplied by the team in Nuneaton.

Sub contract Lapping and Polishing Services

Lapping is widely used as a process for achieving high levels of surface quality and precision in industrial manufacturing.

There are many advantages of lapping. It is used to correct imperfections in shape and produces a close fit between the mating surfaces. As it doesn’t require the use of holding devices –such as a clamp, so no workpiece distortion occurs.

Lapping is extremely effective when surfaces that require absolute precision need to be produced and is the go-to method for achieving extreme flatness, parallelism, and surface finish as it goes far beyond any conventional machining methods. As the process is slow and controlled it enables the production of dimensions to achieve a very high degree of accuracy. As lapping can process a vast range of material types with minimal setup, it is also great for use on non-magnetic products and far outweighs grinding of non-ferrous materials.

Lapping is extremely accurate and is used across a wide variety of industries from aerospace to motorsport and nuclear. Lapping Services Ltd has been offering established sub
