Multimodal Show Review – Top Exhibitors

Industry debates the ever-changing UK/EU customs requirements at Multimodal 2024

Multimodal 2024 has seen a record number of visitors through the door at this year's event, running from 11th-13th June 2024. With queues forming ahead of the doors opening on the second day of the exhibition, many made the most of the fantastic transport links into Birmingham’s NEC.

Those attending were treated to in-depth sessions demystifying the upcoming changes to UK-EU customs regulations, an issue that has been at the forefront since Brexit in 2020. However, with the introduction of the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), UK businesses face additional complexities and are navigating uncharted waters.

Michael Boulanger and Anne Samson from RM Boulanger provided a deeper understanding of CBAM, and how UK exporters can transform what could be seen as potential barriers into avenues of opportunities. The new policy introduces rules on imports of certain products with a high carbon intensity. Those products need to report the greenhouse gas emissions embedded in their imports.

The focus of talks also shifted to rail, following the government’s recent target setting aimed at growing rail freight up to 75% by 2050. A group panel moderated by Maggie Simpson OBE, Director General for Rail Freight Group, discussed the challenges and opportunities achieving the target will present.

The expert panel from the Rail Freight Group, Logistics UK, Associated British Ports, Freightliner, Solent Stevedores and DP World, were on hand to offer a range of perspectives. The industry must address the capacity and capabilities to achieve such challenging targets.

Over 140 speakers will have taken to the stage over the three-day event, spanning

esteemed organisations including Unipart, Boohoo, Kingfisher PLC, Europa Worldwide Group, Howard Tenens Logistics, Freightliner Group Ltd, Kuehne+Nagel Ltd, CEMEX UK and Amazon.

Event Director Robert Jervis commented on this year’s speaker line-up, “This year’s event has seen so many fantastic sessions, covering a wide range of industry topics. No stone has been left unturned when considering sustainability, technology and customs requirements. The future is bright for the logistics industry, and this event continues to be a fantastic moment for those across the full supply chain to connect and network.”

On Thursday 13th June, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal will be visiting the show in her capacity as Patron of Transaid, the international development charity founded by Save

the Children, The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), and HRH The Princess Royal.

This is our pick of the best exhibitors from this year’s show, listed here in alphabetical order: ACP Global Forwarding, Clarksons Port Services, Cocoon FMS, Conex Systems, DeliveryApp, Institute of Couriers, Kerry Logisitics, Logicom Hub, Logopak International & Mildelf. Further details can be found on the next eight pages and a half.

Institute of Couriers, IOC: Key worker status delivering a growing number of items to doors across the UK

The Stakeholder to Govt for express logistics, IOC representing final mile to door, a body of fellows and members of the UK brands in delivery to door. A body delivering code of values, facilitating best practice, learning and education to fleet and sortation. The Institute hosts the National Courier Awards., Oct 22nd, the gala event will recognise the best of best delivery of parcels and mail to the door in the UK. Key worker status was awarded to express final mile operatives from mail, parcel and food delivery during COVID. Numbers to door accelerated in a shift from High street retail to home delivery and exceed 60 billion items a year.

using gloves provided by Master glover, took a red-hot branding iron in hand and tax-marked the courier bike for the conduct of trade in the City of London.

Institute of Couriers is the govt stakeholder organisation; it is the voice for the Express delivery and courier sector and is working towards a chartership application with the Privy Council. Providing a focus of knowledge and communication to the sector. Hosting four heads of industry events each year, the National Courier Awards in October and the fellows gowning in Feb. Big agenda items include road safety, security theft and threat, education and clean air for final mile, last mile delivery.

Three hundred thousand words a year sent to fellows in a ‘week ahead.’ Sunday email briefing, supported by further urgent news shots regarding items such as major road closure, alerts including JSS, IR35 & Taylor answers on modern workforce status. There is a busy news web with knowledge bubble posts for current affairs in sector to code of conduct. At the front line, IOC have built a working vehicle gallery with images of over a thousand express delivery vans.

Recently, the IOC delivered Final Mile in a Five Hundred year transport tradition for the City of London.

“An Iconic Courier motorcycle delivery to final mile at Guildhall Livery Cartmarking ceremony, courier brand taxed for trade. It’s not a final mile without a delivery!”

IOC parcel to Lord Mayor with Puffin memory!

“To this day the identity of the Puffin walker remains a mystery.”

Golden helmet for Alderman Alison Gowman

Iconic City of London courier motorcycle in the historic freight vehicle parade across Guildhall Yard, final mile with half a million items delivered across one hundred and thirty thousand City miles. Almost half a decade of history for half a millennium of transport ceremony, with five hundred guests celebrating transport in the Square Mile.

IOC chairman Carl Lomas rode the 1976 series one Honda CX500 courier bike dressed in the brands of the eighty’s same day delivery companies - Pony Express, Delta, Security Despatch, Mercury and GLH. Lomas was not alone; he was escorted by IOC hon fellow and City of London Alderman Alison Gowman CBE who wore a glittering golden open face motorcycle helmet for the City occasion.

A vehicle ambassador for our sector, the courier bike was recognised for delivery of freight by the Worshipful Livery of Carmen, Master Carman David Pugsley and the Lord Mayor Michael Minelli, the Lord Mayor,

Alderman Alison Gowman comments, “The City of London relies on good deliveries and so with the Lord Mayor's theme of ‘Connect to Prosper’ the courier industry is key. Tremendous to take part and celebrate the success of the final mile express sector on such an iconic motorcycle.”

It’s not a proper final mile without a delivery. The IOC had a package at Cartmarking for the Lord Mayor, delivering a silver-framed photograph, it delivered a memory of the IOC presentation of a Puffin bird to the Lord Mayor from last year’s November parade by the IOC clean air delivery float in the Lord Mayor’s Show.

IOC CEO, Dr Tracey Worth explains, “The Lord Mayor's favourite bird is a Puffin, it adorns his coat of arms. In recognition of this, the IOC operator brand leaders all waved Puffin hand puppets to the Lord Mayor at Mansion House and added to that a life-size Puffin walker to deliver a very special hand puffin glove to the Lord Mayor in a perfect final mile special. To this day the identity of the life-size Puffin walker remains a mystery, the best-kept secret in final mile. Was it you?”

The transport livery of Carmen’s Cartmarking is believed to be the oldest vehicle taxation for trade in the world; five hundred years ago, oak carts moving goods from the Thames Wharfes to the city had to enter Guildhall Yard each year, they were brand marked with a year registration making them legal to work in the City. Today is ceremonial, an oak branding board is attached to trade vehicles to be branded by the Lord Mayor, he places a hot iron to mark a letter of the alphabet for the tax year. The brand mark is valid for one year to ply transport trade in the City of London.

Lomas explains the iconic courier motorcycle, “By modern motorbike standards, the bike is big, heavy and scary to ride! But iconic for our sector, a bit of living history, almost fifty years old. The water-cooled, shaft-driven V-twin had an enviable record for reliability. Today I am focused on the cobbled yard ahead. Sand on the cobbles of Guildhall Yard helps the horse freight entries but runs a little scary on two wheels!”

Research by the Institute includes, mapping the delivery to door sector, the triangle diagram of trunked and none trunked networks projecting 60 billion items delivered in 2024. Research on where express sector fits within supply?’ ‘Is the new e-retail explosion really a client chain?’ ‘Would consolidation solve final mile clean air & congestion?’ Latest research, an academic paper in review, ‘how do people value delivery speed in e-retail?’ A five year longitudinal study of consumer value of time in final mile.

What is a worker status in Express ‘Taylor,’ IoC was proud to see over fifty thousand final mile individuals represented to respond to the 2017 May deadline with a detailed explanation of how the sector engages its workforce. Courier is not Gig! An IOC values document, code of conduct and practice followed from that work, The IOC pledge, ‘Doing the right thing in express’ From that, a campaign of values for safety in delivery at the door.

Recent reports from the three national logistics trade shows, IWLEX, CV, Multimodal and the largest transport conference in Europe, Microlise can all be found on the IoC web. IoC works with DfT, DEFRA, DVSA and regions including TFWM, TfGM, Leeds and TfL with their LoCITY programme for alternative fuel final mile solutions. Lobbying for cargo cycle parking and owner driver scrappage schemes to low emission vehicles in clean air zones.

IOC facilitates the Trailblazer employer group for Express qualifications with DfE, IFA, mapping qualifications of delivery operative and sortation at level two, all the way to Express manager degree apprenticeship at level six. IOC have worked with operators to create gold standard delivery material in workbook formats for courses funded by levy. IOC are acting as the EQA expert advisors for those qualifications. IOC is aligned with DWP & JCP for next generation workforce recruitment including sector work academy programmes. Focused on equal opportunity for all, IOC CEO Dr Tracey Worth chairs the DfT, STAT Diversity and inclusion group. The focus charity for IOC is Transaid.

e-commerce boom: One-stop shop for pallet groupage service

ACP Global Forwarding is a leading freight forwarding company, offering comprehensive solutions in road transport, contract logistics, consulting, e-commerce solutions, all with a difference: it has its own customs agency.

Established in 1993, this Warshaw based company has expertise spanning back over thirty years. In 2003, it was incorporated into the DPD Group and benefits from membership of the Polish Chamber of Forwarding and Logistics and affiliation with the British Polish Chamber of Commerce (BPCC).

The largest service is domestic and international groupage road service, offering groupage transport (one to six pallets) on regular lines across 30 countries in Europe, including the UK. The recent boom in e-commerce has expedited deliveries to Amazon Fulfilment centres in Doncaster and Coventry, with ACP Global Forwarding at the forefront of this.

Marcel Piątkowski: Head of Sales from ACP Global Forwarding exhibited at Multimodal 2024 from 11th-13th June at the NEC Birmingham. He was part of an esteemed group of trade professionals interviewed for a ‘Meet the Experts’ video series at the threeday event. In the interview, Marcel spoke candidly about navigating postBrexit customs and pinpointed how ACP Global Forwarding is providing bespoke solutions for British-based customers.

“We provide a one-stop-shop for British customers and unlike other freight forwarding companies, continued our freight forwarding services in the aftermath of Brexit. It’s important that we are a trusted partner and a large part of that has been our forensic understanding of the finer intricacies of custom regulations. We can advise on all low to high volume parcels for consignees from Europe to the UK and vice versa – this is in addition

to our expertise in managing high volume Amazon shipments to fulfilment centres in the UK with ‘timesensitive’ delivery windows.”

“British entrepreneurs or company owners don’t need to open directly in Poland for example, they can register VAT as a VAT payee, acquire a European number and then seamlessly make shipments as one declaration/ load each time, which can be more cost-effective.”

ACP Global Forwarding runs a ‘tight ship’ – as we say in the UK. Whilst many of the Mediterranean companies take extended holidays during the hotter months, this Warshaw powerhouse has continued running services as usual. For example, wine shipments have been arriving, without delay from Italian vineyards to bespoke wineries across the UK and all this with increased holiday road traffic.

Here at Business & Industry Today, we have been so impressed with the professionalism and expertise displayed by ACP Global Forwarding that we have awarded them as one of our Top Exhibitors at Multimodal 2024 and look forward to seeing what their next move will be.

Logopak: Trusted partner in print & apply labelling solutions

As the pioneering European manufacturer of print & apply labelling technology, Logopak delivers precision-engineered solutions designed to meet the rigorous demands of modern industry. Manufactured at its cutting-edge facility in Hartenholm, Germany, Logopak machines are renowned for their exceptional durability, reliability, and performance.

For over 40 years, industry leaders across the food & beverage sector have relied on Logopak for mission-critical labelling equipment that ensures seamless production and compliance. Logopak’s expertise extends to various industries, including eCommerce, warehousing, 3PL, 4PL, logistics, paper & cardboard, OEM integration, and bespoke solutions. By choosing Logopak, businesses benefit from innovative technology and a commitment to operational excellence.

Logopak, the inventor of the first print-andapply labelling system in 1978, offers trusted quality and security. With UK-based parts and a skilled engineering network, most sites are reachable within three hours for same-day repairs.

Logopak provides tailored labelling solutions for supply chain and logistics sectors, ensuring efficient product identification with GS1-

compliant barcodes and RFID-enabled options for enhanced tracking.

The last 18 months has seen a rapid increase in consumer purchasing in the eCommerce sector. Any product entering the distribution/logistics supply chain requires identification in the form of a barcode shipping label.

As specialists in automated bagging machine solutions and automated carton labelling solutions, this automated process removes the requirement for manual interaction, by automatically scanning the product for its ID, creating a ‘look up’ for the customer order, downloading the carrier label via an API call and finally automatically packages/labels the finished order.

Logopak have worked closely with their partners ADPAK and BVM over the last decade to develop a fully integrated eCommerce auto-bagging and labelling solution to meet the demands of some of the UK’s largest online and high street retailers. The Comtex and Compacta ranges provide varied solutions for both dispatch and returns for online retailers.

Both options integrate fully with Logopak hardware and software, enabling automated packaging slip insertion and dispatch carrier labelling.

The Comtex allows secure, customised bags for single or multiple products, dispatching 900-1,500 packs per hour. It reduces manual effort, waste, and increases profitability by allowing products to be returned in original quality packaging.

The Compacta offers a lower-cost alternative with similar benefits. While the Comtex creates custom-sized bags, the Compacta uses a standard-width bag with an optimised length.

Dematerialised customs, a digital transformation workshop now in UK and Ireland

Partner to Key Accounts and SMEs in all sectors of activity, CONEX develops and markets a range of collaborative tools for the management of customs and security declarations.

Its customers, importing/exporting companies, carriers and registered customs representatives, use its solutions and services to optimise and secure the entry, processing and electronic exchange of declarations for all their international movements of goods.

Recent developments in the AIS, AES, CDS, NCTS5, GVMS, PBN, S&S GB, PNTS and ICS2 customs clearance systems and procedures have created an environment conducive to innovation at CONEX. Its software suite for processing customs declarations has been evolving according to new declarative standards. Its CUSTOMS via conex™ and SAFE via conex™ solutions generate AIS, AES, CDS customs and ICS security declarations respectively, secure information flows and ensure electronic exchanges with British and European customs administrations.

The company goes further and has turned towards artificial intelligence and blockchain to offer customs operators productivity gains and enhanced security for data entry and processing.

Safeguarding the financial implications of goods classification

TARIFF via conex™ is a database that watches over companies’ customs compliance. It is a real compendium of functionalities to help determine

goods commodity codes. Its strength lies in its powerful smart search engine, which assists and accompanies declarants in a relevant way: it compares the common vocabulary with that of the customs tariff, sorts the data, offers classification suggestions, manages relevant filters, refines and considerably reduces the tree structure of customs information to get to the essentials.

Processing with greater visibility and rapidity

In the ever-evolving context of customs process digitisation towards zero paper, CONEX offers its customers a solution for organising and securing their exchanges with their customers, partners, suppliers and employees. ZEN via conex™, the collaborative workplace and dematerialised archiving platform, centralises, tracks and logs data flows, documents and exchanges of instructions. ZEN intelligently organises all data flows, enabling the operator to follow the lifeline of his/her work file, from its pre-declaration, through the declarative phase and onto archiving. The platform centralises documents and information which, until now, arrived by a variety of methods depending on everyone’s habits: email, telephone, drive... ZEN via conex™ is based on blockchain technology. All exchanges are tracked and protected by their digital fingerprint and a timestamp; the data is therefore unalterable.

Supporting customs services in document digitalisation CONEX does not stop there when it comes to offering customs operators more comfort and performance in customs procedure management. The launch of its OCR module, OCR via conex™ which, thanks to artificial intelligence, identifies in documents useful data for customs declarations, digitises, analyses and formats them for direct integration into the CONEX customs clearance solution, precisely where declarants need them. By developing this new application in its customs software suite, CONEX saves operators the time-consuming and tedious work of manual data input. By reducing this task upstream, the CONEX platform allows declarants to make considerable gains in work productivity, safety and comfort.

CONEX supports customs operators in customs procedure management with the guarantee of providing applications that comply with regulations and of benefiting from additional innovative and facilitative tools.

CASE STUDY: Armac Martin’s Sustainable Manufacturing Transformation

Since 1929, Armac Martin has been a pioneer in crafting design-led luxury brass hardware and accessories.

Founded by Harold McGrail as a local brass foundry, the company has evolved into a fourth-generation family business, renowned globally for its commitment to exceptional design and craftsmanship. With a portfolio spanning brass hardware, shelf brackets, mirrors, and more, Armac Martin is celebrated for its heritage, innovation, and dedication to using the finest materials.

Challenges:

Armac Martin heavily relies on compressed air for CNC machining, but their existing system operated at full capacity constantly, leading to unnecessary energy expenditure.

The need for change

Armac Martin has been driving to make their manufacturing operations more sustainable for a number of

years as part of their sustainability strategy to achieve net zero by 2041, and after completing some energy monitoring, realised their compressed air supply was a significant energy drain.

Ambitious targets and objectives

Armac Martin’s main objective is to reduce manufacturing energy consumption whilst utilising a solution that will give them the capability to expand their compressed air usage on new equipment in the future when needed.

Focus on the things that matter most

Reducing energy consumption was their primary driver and the solution recommended and adopted allows for variable compressed air. Armac Martin’s previous compressed air system ran at full capacity all of the time, whereas the solution they have can reduce the power needed by only supplying what is required.

Solution:

Collaborating with FPS Compressors and Compressed Air Systems UK –Birmingham, Armac Martin opted for a new system capable of variable compressed air supply, identified through data logging and energy audit exercises. This approach aligned with their sustainability goals by reducing power consumption.

Implementation:

The transition to the new compressed air system was seamless, with comprehensive training ensuring proficiency in operation.

Results:

Post-installation, Armac Martin achieved significant improvements in energy efficiency without disrupting manufacturing operations. Key highlights include:

● Reduced manufacturing energy consumption.

● Smooth operation without downtime.

● Compressed Air Systems UK – Birmingham are experts in first class compressed air installations.

Compressed air – a vital utility

Compressed air is critical to their manufacturing operations. In particular, high-quality air is an absolute must for modern CNC machining centres.

Identifying solutions by consulting the experts

The system was monitored using state of the art instruments and analysed over the working weeks. The data logging itself was incredibly easy, and the data and recommended solution were very clearly explained to them.

Working with good partners

Armac Martin’s experience with FPS Compressors and with their long-established distributor Compressed Air Systems UK in Birmingham was excellent; everyone spoken to was incredibly knowledgeable and recommended a great solution. The install was straightforward, and the training was great.

Situated in an elevated position with stunning views across Guildford and adjacent to an arboretum, Onslow Recreation Ground is a popular destination for both nature lovers and families. The playground, featuring a range of exciting equipment made from industrial-looking steel and timber, required a robust new fence to enhance its visual appeal while ensuring the safety of its young visitors.

Overcoming challenges with innovation The primary challenge was to create a playful and engaging environment that meets rigorous safety standards. The new fencing solution had to withstand outdoor elements and high-traffic usage while providing a secure boundary to protect children from wandering off,

keep dogs out, and be strong and durable enough to withstand climbing by older children.

Jacksons Fencing installed their RoSPAapproved Metal Playtime® playground fencing, meeting both functional and aesthetic needs. Standing at one metre tall, the fence features a flat top, with rounded edges and smooth surfaces, which minimise injury risk. The individual pales were powder coated in a variety of colours after being hot dip galvanised, resulting in an eye-catching and durable design.

teams, ensuring that the highest standards of repair and maintenance applications are upheld.

Centrifugal Pump Repair: A Case Study Pumps that are used to transfer fluids contain abrasive substances and can experience significant levels of erosion, especially in areas with high flow velocities.

Belzona UK was contacted to assist in the repair of a centrifugal pump in the petrochemical industry. The pump had been coated with a glass flake system and had been in service for several years, operating in dirty water. The glass flake had broken down and failed, which allowed for erosion to occur within the casing.

Facing prohibitive costs and lengthy delays, the customer decided to invest in Belzona UK’s polymeric repair and protection solution. The asset owner agreed to deliver the pump to Belzona UK’s purpose-built application facility for a speedy repair solution.

The dedicated application team prepared the surface to a profile of 75Μm and a surface cleanliness of SA

21/2. The eroded surface areas were identified and Belzona 1311 (Ceramic R-Metal) a solvent-free, metal repair composite was applied to rebuild the damaged substrate.

To protect the volute casing from abrasive substances, the ceramic filled epoxy coating, Belzona 1321 (Ceramic S-Metal) was applied, offering excellent long-term protection from erosion and corrosion damage.

Fully restored, the pump was reinstated to full working capacity with the benefit of increased protection and a saving on replacing the asset.

Belzona UK offers solutions for vital assets within many industries. From pipework to concrete and rubber repairs, Belzona UK helps to maintain industries not only from a cost perspective, but also from an ecological standpoint, reducing the carbon footprint by repairing rather than replacing vital assets.

Nearly half (42%) of SMEs in England don’t know that upcoming Simpler Recycling legislation will impact their business, according to a new survey from waste management experts Biffa

SMEs will face extra challenges from the scheme compared to corporate businesses – like finding space for new bins, separating all recycling into material type and training staff – compounded by the risk of a fine if not implemented. For many, it will be the first time doing so.

That said, 58% of English SMEs do believe Simpler Recycling will affect their business. When it comes to wider UK policies, affected SMEs anticipate Extended Producer Responsibility (53%), Digital Waste Tracking (52%) and the existing Plastic Packaging Tax (51%) having the greatest impact.

It comes as SMEs report sustainability being a greater business priority in 2024 compared to last year – the third highest (36%) following cost efficiency (45%) and revenue growth (39%). When Biffa issued a similar survey in 2023, sustainability was the lowest priority for small businesses

What’s more, four in five (80%) see waste

management and recycling as important to sustainability, with three in 10 (29%) saying the two are ‘very important.’

They prevalently measure and report on the reduction of general waste (67%) in their efforts to be more sustainable – a significant rise on 39% last year.

Flood & Coast 2024: Review

Flood & Coast 2024 brought together the brightest minds under one roof for three days to examine emergency climate crisis issues from flooding to coastal erosion.

The attendance for Flood & Coast 2023 was almost 2,000 visitors, which was 30% up form 2022 but 2024 went further with 2,390 registrants, showing the pressing urgency of these issues. The three main issues from 2023 continued to dominate this year’s event:

t Flooding & coastal erosion risk management in changing climates

t Nature-based solutions

t Surface water management

The biggest players from the flood and coastal erosion risk management (FCERM) sector met at the event from the 4th-6th June 2024 at Telford International Centre to share stories, showcase innovations and inspire ideas for the future.

One of the hottest topics was Nature-Based Solutions – also named Natural Flood Managment (NFM), which involves using ‘natural techniques’ to reduce or control flood areas. In more scientific terms, this means methods to mimic the natural functions of rivers, floodplains and the wider catchment to store water, slow the rate and help reduce flooding further downstream. This includes river and floodplain restoration such as removing barriers like embankments, or building ponds or wetlands –essentially giving water a defined place to go.

Tree Planting is another approach – with trees helping absorb rainwater through the tree root system and regulating streamflow by intercepting rainfall - thus reducing surface runoff.

Moorland Restoration sets to reverse erosion due to overgrazing by livestock, pollution and draining land for

agriculture by planting heather brash, grasses and types of moss to reduce CO2 in the atmosphere. Furthermore, restored moorland helps the growth of vegetation, prevents erosion and supports the local ecosystem’s fight against heavy rainfall.

The conference session on ‘What Nature-Based Solutions Do for Us’ at Flood & Coast 2024 was one of the most well attended, thus demonstrating its appeal to many attendees from multiple sectors including NGOs, local government, flood risk and water management and infrastructure and utility management. The session was led by expert keynote speakers: Lia Moutselou, Senior Policy Lead at Consumer Council for Water (CCW) and Mark Lloyd, Chief Executive at The Rivers Trust.

The Top Exhibitor for Sustainability Today was Mackley on Stand G11: a collaborative contractor delivering river, coastal, water and complex infrastructure to build a sustainable future.

The company was established back in 1927 and in 2014 became a member of the Van Oord Group after acquisition by Van Oord UK Ltd. Working at the coalface, Mackley specialises in civil engineering projects in the following areas: coastal, fluvial, waste, water, ports, harbours, energy and infrastructure projects for both central and local government, utility companies and private clients. With a flair for innovation, Mackley likes to get stuck into complex projects such as a recent one with The Environment Agency on the River Medway. Working as a contractor, Mackley installed a brand-new footbridge (16M in length) over the river made from fibre-reinforced polymer recycled from old fishing nets. This exciting new material technology was installed in Kent at Twyford

Marina, with tandem side ramps laid using a block system that negates the need for reinforced concrete walls and without mortar. The lighter weight of the bridge due to the materials used reduces the supporting foundation size, thus massively lowering the carbon footprint.

With an impressive portfolio of completed projects under its belt, this talented contractor has built-up an impressive network of partners, for example, it is the first responder for flood incidents across the South East for The Environment Agency and other Local Authorities. The fleet of plant and highly skilled staff respond on a 24/7 basis by assessing the flood damage and then implementing immediate repair work, day or night.

Another high-profile project was partnering on the award-winning Ventnor Eastern Esplanade Sea Defence Project. This mammoth undertaking involved next-level sea defences to protect homes and businesses in the area: huge ‘king posts’ in the foreshore, with expert backfilling and concrete capping to encase the aging sheet piles.

Mackley is definitely one to watch: since 1927, it has been helping protect communities around the UK from the devastating impact of climate change, whilst protecting biodiversity and water security. Mackley has equally impressive partnerships with the local students at Brighton College and prioritises championing women across the FCERM industry. This was another highlight of Flood & Coast 2024 with a large ‘Women in FCERM Networking Event’ focused on ‘Investing in Women: accelerating progress’ – which was well attended and included speakers sharing their own experiences and challenges faced in the industry.

This is our pick of the best exhibitors from this year’s event, listed here in alphabetical order: JT Mackley & Co Ltd. Further details can be found on this page and the next.

ECI for Sustainability

As a civil engineering contractor operating since 1927, we have witnessed enormous changes affecting our industry throughout the centuries. Methods, technologies and health & safety are among the many radical progressions, but one most notable is the increasing necessity to develop sustainable civil engineering, construction techniques and solutions to meet some of the major challenges of the 21st Century.

The majority of Mackley’s work on rivers and coastlines unfortunately gives us a front row seat to the impacts of climate change. Many of our own ‘lifer’ staff working these waterways and beaches throughout their professional lives have seen first-hand the increasing erosion, frequent extreme weather events, biodiversity loss, dropping beach levels and control structures under pressure.

While there is an immediate environmental need to improve, clients and project promoters are now also approaching schemes with broader goals. Engaging with wider groups and improving communication with stakeholders, community groups, public forums etc. helps clients embed sustainability into projects from the start. Plans don’t just tick the original box of constructing X or repairing Y, but they’re sympathetic to the needs of the people and wildlife living within the area – it’s not just a flood bund, it’s a picturesque public riverside walk with wildlife habitat enhancements.

The foundations of sustainable infrastructure have to be incorporated from the start and we are increasingly helping clients through ECI (Early Contractor Involvement) to support the development of early designs. We explore options like natural flood defences, sustainably sourced and low impact materials and advise on buildability, materials, plant, design and innovation. We can then

present a choice of solutions that provide ecological, commercial, community and ecological benefits early enough for them to be incorporated and budgeted. Events like Flood & Coast provide the opportunities to not only showcase our services, but gather new information on innovative, exciting methods and products continually in development to aid our ECI.

Examples of ‘greening the grey’ can include small features like rock gouging, groyne roping, timber troughs and broom heads to encourage marine life, to our larger biodiversity enhancements such as a 2.5km specially textured sea wall to increase colonisation by marine organisms. Transforming the wall into a valuable habit simultaneously protects the concrete from the sun and sea and also extends the life of the wall. This enhancement adds significant value to the wall’s main purpose as a flood defence but also creates an attractive shoreline walk.

Wi.Tec-Sensorik: The gas measurement company

Wastewater treatment plants emit large quantities of greenhouse gases such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). These gases must therefore be measured as part of process optimisation. Wi.Tec has developed an NDIR-based measuring system (INFRA.sens®) specifically for this application, with which these gases can be measured very accurately in the ppm range. In addition to N2O and CH4, the INFRA.sens® can also measure CO2 simultaneously. The oxygen measurement (0-25Vol.%) is carried out with a digital electrochemical oxygen sensor (O2.sensD). The compact design can therefore be very easily integrated into the control electronics for these wastewater treatment plants. The long-term stability and reliability of this measuring system have been successfully documented in a wide range of applications.

Small, adsorbent ‘fins’ collect humidity rather than swim through water

Clean, safe water is a limited resource and access to it depends on local bodies of water. But even dry regions have some water vapor in the air. To harvest small amounts of humidity, researchers in ACS Energy Letters have developed a compact device with absorbent-coated fins that first trap moisture and then generate potable water when heated. They say the prototype could help meet growing demands for water, especially in arid locations.

Earth’s atmosphere holds trillions of liters of fresh water as vapor, but it’s challenging to collect this colorless, transparent and dilute gas. Previously, researchers developed systems that trap dew or fog, pooling the liquid into containers. But in dry

areas that don’t have much dew, special materials like temperatureresponsive hydrogels, metal-organic frameworks or zeolites (crystalline aluminosilicates) may help pull small amounts of moisture from the air and release the water when heated. However, for these absorbents to be practical for real-world use, they need to be incorporated into compact and portable devices with a waste heat source, such as applications that run at high temperatures or systems that emit heat as a by-product. Therefore, Xiangyu Li, Bachir El Fil and colleagues developed a humidity harvester that could fit those specifications.

The work identifies a key opportunity for rapid moisture capture and water harvesting from dry air,

multiple times per day. With further development, this system could be integrated into existing infrastructures that produce waste heat, such as buildings or transportation vehicles, to provide a costeffective option for generating potable water in arid regions, the researchers say.

The paper’s abstract will be available on June 26th at 8am. Eastern time here: http://pubs.acs.org/doi/ abs/10.1021/acsenergylett.4c01061

Detect leaking refrigerant – air conditioning gas

As summers continue to break records, installation of air-conditioning is becoming an essential part of today’s new & existing buildings.

New buildings should be using sustainable technologies and materials and to help achieve this, Aquilar have recently launched a revolutionary new refrigerant gas sensor to help project designers and engineers achieve a more sustainable and safer environment.

New and existing installations of airconditioning & heat pump systems can never be guaranteed leak free. Aquilar’s new generation of refrigerant gas detectors can be installed in commercial and residential buildings, such as hotels, apartments, hospital rooms and offices. They effectively and efficiently detect refrigerant gas leaks within an occupied space, safeguarding people and preventing potential harm to the environment. Suitable for stand-alone use or sensors can be networked together in larger buildings for central monitoring.

This new sensor technology is based on Molecular Property Spectrometry, which

offers a 15-year sensor head lifespan (compared to the 5-year maximum of semiconductor technology) and requires no calibration during this time. These sensors are also immune to false alarms from other non-target gases such as hairspray or deodorant used in hotel rooms and apartments.

The benefits of installing a fixed refrigerant gas leak detection system are clear. Reduces cost of ownership, reduces environmental impact and reduces potential harm to occupants.

Businesses are advised to carry out regular Legionella testing as cases rise in the UK

What is Legionnaires’ disease and how does it affect businesses?

Legionella is the waterborne bacteria that leads to Legionnaires’ disease, a form of pneumonia. While the disease can affect people of all ages, Legionnaires’ is especially fatal to people who are elderly, ill or have a compromised immune system.

While the bacteria is known to live in hot water sources such as hot tubs and saunas, within a business it can be found within water tanks, plumbing systems, cooling towers and air conditioning units and thrives in temperatures between 2045°C or stagnant water systems.

As we enter spring, it becomes increasingly important to test for Legionella in your air conditioning system. The reason being that if your air conditioning unit has not been used

for a period of time, there is likely to be stagnant water in the system, which becomes a breeding ground for bacteria as it provides the correct temperature for the bacteria to grow and proliferate.

How can you catch the disease while in the workplace?

People catch Legionnaires' disease by inhaling droplets of water in the air, which contain the bacteria. Therefore, rather than physically drinking water containing legionella bacteria, people will become infected with the disease through breathing it in. Therefore, you should be careful around anything that could create a water mist.

It should be noted however that the disease is not contagious and cannot spread directly from person to person. However, while people with weakened immune systems are at more risk, anyone can catch the disease.

Head to Direct365 to find more information about the legionella risk assessment services on offer.

Kanthal and Danieli announce strategic partnership to develop and industrialise full-scale electric process gas heaters for DRI

Kanthal, a world leader in electric industrial heating technology, and Danieli, a major global supplier of turnkey plants and equipment for the iron – and steel industry, have announced a strategic partnership to jointly scale up Kanthal’s demonstrated electric process gas direct-heating solution, Prothal® DH, to full industrial scale. By installing Prothal® DH in Energiron hydrogen-ready DRI plants, fully green DRI production will be achieved. Furthermore, the introduction of Prothal® DH technology in blast furnace operation will reduce CO2 emissions in ironmaking.

Global megatrends are driving the demand for decarbonisation of the industry and as one of the world’s largest emitters of CO2, representing 7% of global total emissions, the iron and steel industry is in the spotlight. Several

plants

projects, mainly in Europe, are developing solutions such as hydrogen-based direct reduced iron processes (H2-DRI) with the aim to remove CO2 emissions, enabling production of green steel.

Under the name Prothal® DH, Kanthal has developed a direct heated electric solution for high-temperature process gas heating – one important step towards enabling zero-emission DRI plants. The solution has been tested and verified in pilot scale and with this partnership, Kanthal and Danieli aims to further develop this technology to full scale, which means up to 100’s of megawatts. The ambition is to have a solution ready for commercialisation in 2027.

The heating solution will be developed for hydrogen, natural gas and combinations, thereby enabling retrofitting of existing DRI plants.

DO YOU KNOW YOUR EXPLOSION RISK?

No matter what you're processing – chemicals, food, pharmaceuticals, biomass, wood products – if it produces dusts or powders, there's a high probability you have an explosion risk. All it takes to interrupt plant productivity is a combustible material, oxygen and an ignition source.

For more than six decades, IEP Technologies has provided the right explosion protection solution for every type of process application. From cyclones and dust collectors to milling equipment and dryers. We can design a protection system and surround you with 24/7 service and support. Protecting plant starts with knowing your explosion risk.

Explosion suppressor: eSUPPRESSOR™

The IEP Technologies eSUPPRESSOR™ is a high-rate discharge suppressor used for explosion suppression and isolation systems. Its electro-mechanical operation is unique to the industry, as no pyrotechnic devices are required for activation.

The eSUPPRESSOR™ has standard features that include pressure monitoring, lock out tag out capability and LED indication of device status. A key benefit is that all the safety functions are fully monitored, which is not possible for any device employing pyrotechnic actuators. The eSUPPRESSOR™ design & manufacture has SIL2 third party certification.

Spark Detection: Atexon®

The ‘Next Generation’ Atexon® Spark Detection and Extinguishing systems by IEP Technologies have recently received third party approval by Factory Mutual (FM), meeting the latest detailed requirement of FM3265:2020. For UK users the equipment is also certified to UKCA, UKEX and VDS certification is in the pipeline. The innovative Atexon® SD300-EX series spark detector is a world first being able to detect visible light (VIS), near infrared light (NIR) and infrared light (IR), with a 180° field of view. The benefit being it has the ability to see different ignition sources though material layers, even with dense material flow, with reduced hardware.

Passive Protection Devices:

Typically, the most cost-effective explosion protection method in terms of hardware, install and maintenance is IEP Technologies’ passive protection devices. These include vents, flameless vents and isolation devices. Explosion relief panels are calculated to vent a deflagration, and in doing so prevent the rapid developing pressure. This reduces the chance of vessel rupture, and structural damage. Similarly flameless vents work by the same principle, allowing the heat and pressure dissipation but differ from a traditional vent by mitigating the flame from passing into the atmosphere outside the flame arrestor. This type of venting method has all the benefits of traditional venting but has the added benefit of reducing the chance of possible injuries to personnel. Vent sizing is based on several different factors, call us today to discuss your options.

TVR: Masters of thermal vision

Thermal Vision Research (TVR) is the UK premier distributor for Teledyne FLIR’s IR thermography camera range, designed for specialist R&D applications.

Established in 2017 by Director Matthew Clavey, TVR is based at Aztec West Business Park near Bristol, in South Gloucestershire.

At last year’s Engineering Design Show (EDS): Held at the Coventry Building Society Arena from 12th-13th October, TVR featured at the show with Teledyne FLIR Business Development Managers.

The team showcased a state-of-the-art thermal lab, with a wide range of products including:

● The RS Platform: Capable of seeing images in kilometres – perfect for military and defence operations

● Microscope cameras: With images of two microns per pixel.

● Premiere Uncooled A700 camera: 640x480 (60 Hertz) – with research studio – great sensitivity and perfect for university research and entry-level industrial applications.

● The ‘King of Cameras’: The cooled HD 1280x1024 sensor, able to run at 180 Hertz, to 3kHz. Produces fine detail, down to 0.02 degrees.

The EDS show was a resounding hit, with stand fever pitch around the thermal selfies! Visitors were astounded by the high resolution and magnification capabilities of the Teledyne FLIR camera range.

We caught up with Matthew post-EDS show to find out how things have progressed, “We are excited to be showcasing the all-new FLIR’s 80-degree wide angled lens. It has full compatibility with A400/500/700 science range and is available now from our website.”

“That’s not all! We ran our first FLIR RS6780 advanced sensor showing during November. The RS6780 has a three-position motorised filter wheel, with premium quality thermal images across long-range and tracking. It is optimally-designed for researchers as a radiometric camera system, due to the calibration for temperature and radiance measurements. Our demonstration showed the optional extender lens up to 750mm, allowing tracking up to 30km away in the distance: perfect for defence operations, wind turbine monitoring, rocket launch monitoring through to wildlife research around the world!”

The R&D capabilities of FLIR thermal cameras are limitless, offering razor-sharp images and measurements, perfect for many applications from defence, military, renewable energy monitoring, battery testing, research, through to cutting-edge wildlife conservation monitoring.

Thermal Vision Research is well known for its outstanding research collaboration with The Aircraft Research Association (ARA): a dedicated UK aerodynamic research institute. This specific mission was to test the hybrid laminar flow control hypothesis. TVR loaned its Teledyne FLIR T1K to locate accurate temperature changes in the high-speed transonic wind tunnel, with speeds up to Mach 1.4 (1,000mph.) As a result of the air turbulence generated from the high speeds, the precise point of transition for airflow changes by less than 1.

The Teledyne FLIR T1K provides an accurate visualisation of the airflow in-situ, without adversely affecting the aerodynamic variable. These meticulous point of transition results allowed the Aircraft Research

Association (ARA) to prove the hybrid laminar flow control hypothesis, within controlled test conditions.

The ARA are now at the incredible, early stages of marketing the pioneering FLIR T1K wind tunnel concept design to engineering companies, as a blueprint towards long-haul sustainable flights.

A second collaboration involved working with Northern Rail, through the ingenious trialling of an ‘intelligence train,’ installed with a FLIR A6750sc cooled thermal camera. The camera works with acoustic monitors, G-shock Bogie, AI camera, radar dome, LIDAR horizon-scanning cameras and precision-driven 180° thermal imaging software, providing precision-driven accuracy on railway track infrastructure problems. The camera captures clear, sharp images in transit, even at high-speeds: the pixels generated in sub-one milliseconds of track sections and full-frames of 125Hz. The cooled camera tracks up to 100 metres ahead on the tracks and automatically uploads detailed track date to a SMART-cloud platform, which can then be accessed by Northern Rail remotely.

Matthew explained the advantages of using the FLIR A6750sc in this manner, “It allows the train company to keep the track open for regular train services, saving costly downtime and thermal imagining target precise areas for track maintenance, earmarking for strategic future engineering maintenance.”

With the recent surge towards battery-electric cars across the UK, especially with the planned 2035 petrol and diesel ban, many businesses and households are considering the shift towards electric vehicles. One ongoing concern though is the safety around EV Batteries, with some high-profile media attention on cargo ship fires recently.

The Teledyne FLIR high-speed thermal camera offers accurate EV test safety reassurance, with more accurate high-speed imaging results than previous thermocouples and general IR devices, pinpointing the exact location of short-circuits and heat spreading.

The high-speed camera gives slow, thermal imaging captures at high temperatures of over 3,000°C and provide details of the thermal management system, during the EV battery testing period.

TVR are happy to visit businesses on-site to demonstrate camera range capabilities and offer camera hiring, lease and purchasing options.

TVR are set to repeat last year’s successful show for this year’s event. On the 9th-10th October 2024, TVR will be attending the Engineering Design Show at Coventry Building Society Arena. They will be located at Stand: G74.

Beat carbon emissions with diesel-free refrigeration

In this issue of Business & Industry Today, we are delighted to showcase Hultsteins UK as our Diesel-Free Refrigeration Manufacturing Company of the Month.

The UK transport sector has been under pressure to decarbonise fleets, with are responsible for 27% of this country’s total greenhouse gas emissions, with all new petrol or diesel powered HGV’s weighing up to 26 tonnes due to be banned in 2035, followed by heavier new petrol or diesel HGVs in 2040.

Whilst the whole industry is grappling to get its head around the financial implications of transition, as part of a wider discussion on alternative fuel infrastructure, Hultsteins have already been building diesel-free refrigeration units for decades.

Spotlight on Hultsteins

Filip Hultstein started the Swedish company back in 1944 and launched the industry’s first hydraulic refrigeration unit in 1962. In 2014, the Holtback Group acquired Hultsteins, followed by the acquisition of UK Company Cold Connect in 2019 to form Hultsteins UK. Based in Biggleswade in Bedfordshire – the UK subsidiary benefits from nearby transport links such as the major intersecting A1 – connecting London to Edinburgh. This leading hydraulic transport refrigeration

manufacturer offers market-leading solutions for reducing carbon, diesel particulate matter, noise and NOx emissions through its Ecofridge and Ecogen hydraulic drive units.

Renowned for low-operation and maintenance costs, exceptional reliability and a long working life, these systems and generators are the ‘products of choice’ for transport operators across the country.

Case study: Reynolds

Reynolds have fitted on-board Ecogen generators for the last 3 years to reduce carbon diesel usage from their temperature-controlled trailer fleet. This was motivated by the company’s commitment to reducing their impact upon the environment. Steve White, Head of National fleet for Reynolds says we have been significantly reducing carbon and diesel through implementing the Ecogen hydraulically driven Ecogen system within our fleet of tractor units.

Powerful benefits

The statistics speak for themselves: the Ecogen and Ecofridge products are estimated to offer a 70-80% saving on diesel costs, 70-80% carbon saving, 98% diesel particulate matter emissions saving, two and a half times saving on nitrogen oxides (NOx), reduced noise pollution, handy retrofitting to all Scania, Volvo and Renault tractors and reduced service costs, with only one service needed per year.

“One diesel-powered fridge unit can emit the same DPM (diesel particulate matter) as around 1,000 Euro 6 cars, which given the WHO’s concern about carcinogenic diesel fumes is a call to arms. We have been at the forefront of diesel-free refrigeration units for decades, with a concerted focus on reducing carbon, cost, noise and improving air quality.”

“We have recently partnered with Addvolt and Courage Technologies to enhance our green energy solutions. We now have a smorgasbord of products that can help operators meet their sustainability goals.”

“Addvolt based in Portugal, design and manufacture an extensive range of Powerpacks and Power Units

(ePTO) to fridge operators, helping vehicles become more sustainable by reducing diesel usage, carbon, particulate emissions and noise levels. This is a dream partnership for cold chain transporters: Hultsteins’ systems can now be combined with a cutting-edge Addvolt PIEK-compliant plug-in hybrid powerpack for 100% electrically powered refrigeration units for longdistance deliveries.”

“Courage Technologies based in Spain, design and manufacture a wide range of self-sufficient zero emission fully electric fridges. Courage electric fridges are quiet when running and can be fitted to BEV (battery electric vehicles) or ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles up to 32M3 in body size. They are ideally suited for BEV as they do not diminish the range of the vehicle’s battery because they use their own lithium batteries. This maximises the vehicle’s operating range.”

“Any interested parties can see demonstrations in Biggleswade of a Courage CT5 MT dual temperature fridge with its own 20.5kW battery built inside the fridge unit. Along with an Addvolt powerpack running a trailer fridge.”

“Looking to the future, we are planning on expanding our sustainable E-Hot Box partnership with Marvtech: manufacturers of standard and customised hot boxes for tippers, towable, demountable and static applications.” outlined Graham Usher, Managing Director: Hultsteins UK.

Excellence in supply chain

We are delighted to showcase Ziegler UK as our Freight Forwarding Service Company of the Month.

The recent wedding of Indian couple Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant was the star-studded celebrity wedding of the year.

As with all large-scale global events, the meticulous behind-the-scenes preparations were months in the making. Ziegler UK was entrusted for the shipment and delivery of the beverages aboard the Celebrity Ascent Mediterranean cruise ship, with 800 highprofile guests including Mark Zuckerberg and Ivanka Trump. An incredible eight pallets with a total weight of over 4 tonnes, worth in the region of £800,000 were carefully loaded onto bullet vans in London, then seamlessly delivered to the Port of Civitavecchia in Italy for delivery onboard the Celebrity Ascent. This ‘white glove’ undertaking took months of careful planning, with due diligence of precise timings, demonstrating Ziegler’s trustworthy expertise.

Heritage of expertise

The Ziegler Group was originally established in 1908 in Brussels, Belgium by Arthur Joseph Ziegler as a transport and logistics company, with an international outlook. The Group has grown exponentially over the last 116 years and now has 154 branches in 15 countries, with a further collaboration with partner companies in 80 countries.

The Group employs a ‘Think Global: Act Local’ policy within its customer-centric approach across freight via air, ocean, road, rail and inland waterway along with logistics, customs clearance, e-commerce and other value-added services.

Spotlight on Ziegler UK

In 2009, Ziegler UK Limited was launched and now has 15 offices and 300 staff across the country. In February this year, the head office relocated into a circa 500,000 sq. ft. super hub at London Gateway. This state-of-the-art facility includes a 365,000 sq. ft. warehouse and 55,000 pallet racking spaces. More recently, work was completed on the new 24,000 sq. ft., two-tier mezzanine floor facilitating a wide range of value-added services including fulfilment and labelling, case picking and packing, bulk order handling, more dedicated e-commerce operations and cross-docking capabilities in B2B and customised order handling in B2C services. Overall, this expanded space gives the UK division room to grow, supporting a determination to elevate the Ziegler brand further.

“Our customer base is spread across industries including chemical, healthcare, cosmetic, events, FMCG, sports & leisure, wine & spirits and we have considerable industry-specific knowledge across each of these sectors. Our biggest operations are across air, ocean and road freight as well as logistics, storage and fulfilment, with some demand for rail freight. We can also offer bullet van services for short lead time deliveries and premium handling for high-value or sensitive items through our Special Request ‘white glove’ service. Through our extended warehouse expansion, we can now offer freight forwarding to larger companies. Our new facility at London Gateway is a port within the wider Port of London, on the north bank of the River Thames in Thurrock, Essex, providing a strategic location for ocean freight shipments and warehouse storage.” explains Managing Director: Lee Marshall.

Supply chain disruptions: how Ziegler UK is providing primary warehouse storage solutions

The ongoing conflict in the Rea Sea has caused severe disruption across the whole supply chain, with escalating prices and delayed shipments. With large annual calendar events such as Black Friday and Christmas, businesses are now planning shipments much earlier in the year to avoid these shipping delays. Ziegler’s new warehouse facility offers ample warehouse space for these early shipments at the port point of entry, allowing businesses some breathing space for inventories, between peak retail seasons.

Personalised customer service

Automated tracking notifications have quickly become the norm for businesses around the world and offers a convenient update at the touch of a button.

“Ziegler UK is a family-run business and we embrace our people, customers and technological innovations. Many of our customers opt for automated notifications, which offer a quick and easy update during the busy working day. Others like to be informed by email or phone and we offer that personal connection through our in-house customer care team. It can be frustrating when shipments are delayed unexpectedly and we ensure that all our customers are notified as soon as possible.”

Driving sustainability

The Ziegler Group has long been concerned with environmental protection across the entire transport chain, aligned with the tenets of the United Nations Global Compact. Our fleet of low-emission trucks offer regular and frequent departures between all European countries and all truck drivers participate in Eco-Driving training to optimise cost-effective and sustainable road freight transport across the continent.

“Ziegler Group’s Brussels headquarters collects and reuses rainwater and uses heat exchangers from the Brussels Maritime Canal to provide both thermal heating and air conditioning. Our new UK warehouse has solar panels installed and uses SMART movementactivation to activate LED lighting for reduced energy consumption.”

Review –

Axiom GB Ltd and IWLEX 24

Axiom are leaders in the complete solutions for warehousing, ecommerce, 3pl and general fulfilment applications. Established in 1999, Axiom, has experience in delivering successful installations in the UK and around the world. Axiom’s philosophy is to provide total solutions embracing mechanical, and software engineering tailored to meet specific client criteria. A key differential in the approach of Axiom, is that many component designs are own intellectual property.

Sortation Systems

These systems allow single streams of packages to be separated to individual delivery routes or couriers. Whether for 3pl despatch or cross-docking applications, also widely used in D2C applications.

Axiom are the only UK manufacturer of Sliding Shoe Sorters. Compact design with single or double-sided sortation possible, high numbers of diverts can be accommodated. The Sliding Shoe Sorter is an industry leading design for efficient sorting of a wide range of products from a small Jiffy to a large parcel on the same system.

Conveyors

All Axiom supplied conveyors are built to our own designs. The conveyors are designed around a common bespoke aluminium profile side sections married to fabricated legs. This offers commonality of components, even for mixed conveyor applications.

A speciality of Axiom are ZLP conveyors. These shorter sections within a conveyor each with an individual

24VDC drive roller & sensor. The high torque drives allowing frequent stop/start applications, even when loaded with product. The ZLP allows high density buffering of product without back-pressure. Sequential operation allows smooth transport of the product and high throughputs

The belt conveyors feature either an end or centre drive mounting, all with an underslung belt tensioning mechanism. This enables large installations of multiple conveyors to be installed to fixed positions.

Speciality sections such as merges, multi-band (MBC), bends, and gravity roller conveyors can complete the application.

Pick & Pack Systems

The ability to associate customer orders with picked items is critical in a time sensitive industry. Customers expect next-day delivery as standard; even same-day.

Axiom Pick & Pack systems allow picked products to be automatically associated with customer order data, with the addition of a delivery note printing complete with automated environmentally aware packaging. This allows high-levels of right first-time customer fulfilment.

Aftersales

Axiom can supply a range of aftersales contracts, including remote support and diagnostics, line monitoring and comprehensive spart parts packages. Each tailored to aid and to compliment the customers capabilities.

Let’s talk…

We’d love to help you solve your materials handling challenges.

Floorcare solutions for every part of your facility

Tennant Company is one of the world’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of industrial and robotic cleaning machines. Having had a successful exhibition at IWLEX 2024, Tennant UK Marketing Manager

Daniel Cross discusses the benefits of having Tennant as your cleaning machine supplier.

Daniel says, “A lot of businesses struggle to find the right cleaning machines for their warehouse, manufacturing or logistics facility, which is why Tennant offer a bespoke process of advice and on-site demonstrations to help customers understand their own needs better and help them find the right machine for their business environment, and this was something we were able to do on the stand at IWLEX as well as showcase some of our latest industrial cleaning machines.”

Tennant are in a unique position to meet customers’ needs since the company can

offer innovative cleaning machines in every category, from Vacuum Cleaners to SweeperScrubbers, and with an impressive 150-year history, the company also has one of the UK’s largest directly-employed service teams working with customers nationwide.

Every space is different, from warehouse flooring to new-build facilities, office and carpeted areas within the same space and external areas, which is where the benefit of working with Tennant comes to light.

Keeping all these spaces clean and safe requires a wide range of specialised industrial cleaning machines. A manufacturing operation where dust, debris, pallet splinters, packaging waste, and oil spills can occur should have an arsenal of large scrubber-dryers, scrubber sweepers, vacuums, sweepers, and mini scrubber dryers at their disposal to ensure every space is clean and inviting.

Daniel continues, “Many of our customers within the industrial sector are focused on the job at hand, and quite rightly so, and in many cases that means they are largely unaware of the type of cleaning machine would be best for their own facility. For example, larger industrial areas where a pre-sweep with a manual brush is not feasible, the Tennant range of Cylindrical Sweepers would be the right choice, and by coming and speaking with us directly at the show, we can offer this advice and show them the machine in person.”

“We were also able to put on a live demonstration of our T16AMR, which we are still boasting about because it’s the world’s first robotic scrubber dryer designed for warehouses and larger industrial facilities.”

Innovative fire alarm system helps save life of resident in serious house fire

An interlinked fire alarm system recently played a vital role in saving the life of a tenant living in a social housing property in Scotland.

Neighbours were alerted to the fire in Mayfield, Dalkeith, when home safety specialist Aico’s Multi-Sensor Alarm was activated and began to sound. While the resident was initially unable to respond, neighbours who heard the alarms through the wall were able to wake them so they could get to safety.

The fire started in the main bedroom of the property, which is owned by Melville Housing Association, whilst the occupant slept downstairs.

The flames moved quickly through to the upstairs hallway and activated alarms, which were interlinked and located throughout the property.

Thanks to the AudioLINK+ function of the Aico 3000 Series alarms, the landlord was able to review the data following the incident, which showed a peak temperature within the home of 102C, with carbon monoxide levels of 450ppm (parts per million) – nine times over the safe limit.

David Todd, Property Manager for Melville Housing Association, said, “After speaking with the fire service, neighbours and the tenants of the property, it’s clear that the smoke and heat detection is very likely to have saved the occupant’s life. The fire started in the upstairs of the property with all alarms sounding due

to being interlinked. The occupant, who has complex needs, was unable to recognise the dangers, however, neighbours alerted him by banging on the door and signalling through the window. Thankfully, the occupant was ushered away to safety and is now fine. The neighbours were alerted due to the noise from the alarms themselves.”

“With us being able to take readings off the smoke alarms, which showed temperatures of over 100C and carbon monoxide being nine times the safe limit, it left us in no doubt that the alarms were working, did their job, and played a significant part in keeping everyone safe. The law on fire alarms means all Scottish homes need to have interlinked alarms, which this incident has proved is very important.”

Neal Hooper, Managing Director at Aico, said, “Lives were saved, which is the most important thing. This really brings home the importance of life safety and of having things in your home

which give you peace of mind every time you go to bed.”

“If the alarms had not alerted the neighbours and, ultimately, the tenants, a tragedy would surely have occurred. Instead, everyone was evacuated from the property and did not come to any lasting harm. Fire and carbon monoxide alarms are critical life safety devices, and this example, along with many others, is testament to the hard work and dedication we give to our products to ensure they perform as expected when they are needed. Too often people will wait until there is increased legislation and regulation before they are forced into taking life safety seriously. We do need better and clear legislation, but at the same time there are relatively inexpensive options which can be fitted to give you peace of mind.”

All Aico alarms are manufactured in-house at their factory in Shannon, Ireland, and each alarm is individually tested multiple times before it leaves the factory to ensure high quality functionality and quick responses.

“This incident illustrates the importance of everyone having functional, compliant smoke alarm and CO systems in their home. People often think nothing like this will happen to them, but it can, and it’s important to stress to regularly test all of their alarms to make sure they’re working and to check their expiry date,” Neal added.

Melville Housing Association has been working with Aico for a number of years and about 95% of alarms in its properties have been supplied by the manufacturer.

“Aico facilitates a number of roundtable events with housing associations which are very well received and where we are able to share important knowledge about fire safety including smoke alarms and fire doors,” David added.

When installed in the roof, the world’s first LAMILUX Sunsation® reveals the advantages of the innovative gelcoat technology with 20 times better UV resistance than the gelcoats currently available on the market. LAMILUX Composites also enables translucent roofs for daylight intake during loading and unloading.

In the case of buses, LAMILUX demonstrates its flair for design: LAMIfoamtex with its soft-touch surface, Composite Floor, which resembles laminate flooring, and LAMIGraph, for interior cladding, are the proven materials of choice here. The manufacturer also presents a robust and durable material, LAMILUX Woven Roving X-treme, for use on roofs and sidewalls. LAMILUX AntiSlip non-slip flooring, which is also available as a visually attractive LAMILUX Anti Slip Style variant, once again scores points in the luggage compartment.

Focus on lightweight construction, sustainability, robustness, function and hygiene

Installed in a wide range of vehicle types, LAMILUX Composites saves a considerable amount of weight while still producing extremely robust superstructures. In sandwich or prefabricated constructions, this composite material sustainably reduces the fuel consumption of the vehicles. High strength and stability create robust constructions that ensure that heavy mechanical stress in daily traffic leaves less traces on the composite materials.

The high damage tolerance also leads to a longer value retention of the vehicle, lower repair costs and easier repair and maintenance. Special materials with additional benefits, such as the non-slip LAMILUX AntiSlip or LAMILUX AntiBac with antibacterial nanosilver surface, round off the product portfolio.

CheckedSafe has reached an agreement with Pendle Borough Council where the Council have mandated the use of its CheckedSafe App

As of now, all Private Hire and Hackney Carriage vehicles licensed in the borough of Pendle must perform a daily walkaround check using the CheckedSafe system. This requirement, which is a condition of their licence, aims to raise vehicle standards. It is also reinforced with sanctions for those who fail to complete the checks or do so inadequately.

The significance of this change cannot be overstated. CheckedSafe has long advocated for daily pre-use walkaround checks for all such vehicles, and Pendle Council has now made a bold decision by making it mandatory. CheckedSafe now expect other local authorities to observe this closely and, hopefully, adopt similar measures.

Darran Harris, Solicitor and Director at CheckedSafe said, “This new agreement has been nearly two years in development, having been first contacted in November 2022 by the Council. It has taken some time, but we have finally got to the position where we are working with a local council to improve road safety. Pendle Borough Council deserve a lot of credit for being the first council to mandate daily checks backed up with sanctions for all of their licensed vehicles, and we hope this safety evolution inspires other councils to follow suit.”

In other news, CheckedSafe, is gearing up to announce the launch of its new GB Domestic Hours App. “We believe that we are the first company in the UK to do this. It's a highly complex area but also very exciting and again a huge industry game changer. Most companies still record data on paper in the W20 books so the move to digital is a huge leap forward,” stated Gary Hawthorne, Founder and Director.

Designed specifically for drivers of goods vehicles operating under GB Domestic Regulations, this innovative tool ensures that operators remain compliant with the legal requirements for managing drivers’ hours and breaks.

With the new software, employers can effortlessly track drivers' hours, manage fatigue, and eliminate the need for paper records. This ensures full compliance with the Drivers’ Hours Legislation and the Working Time Directive. For just £1.00 per user, per week, the system integrates seamlessly into CheckedSafe's award-winning Fleet Management platform or functions as a standalone solution.

Finally, CheckedSafe also launched its Driver Licencing Checking service last year and had its first audit this year.

“The auditors told us that we are the only company offering remote licence checking, wherein we read the data on the driving licence by taking a picture of it and parsing the data. This makes the whole process fully remote,” said Gary.

This innovative service is designed to provide businesses with a cost-effective, user-friendly solution for conducting remote driver licence checks, ensuring compliance with DVLA regulations.

The new service integrates seamlessly into CheckedSafe’s award-winning Fleet Management platform but can also function as a stand-alone solution. With Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology boasting over 95% accuracy, businesses can conduct remote licence checks for just £1.60 per check. The service is particularly beneficial for companies with dispersed workforces, streamlining the fleet management process while maintaining legal compliance.

Some of its key features include:

● Remote Licence Verification: Conduct checks from anywhere with a direct link to the DVLA ADD service.

● Custom Alerts: Set up personalised data points and alerts to stay informed about your drivers.

● Risk Evaluation: Easily identify at-risk drivers,

ensuring your fleet operates safely.

● Pay-As-You-Go: Add the service based on the risk assessment of your drivers.

A few Comprehensive Checks will also be carried out to ensure that your driver details are correct and that they have the correct licence for their role. CheckedSafe will check all previous driver offences have been identified including offences such as speeding and drink driving. They will also check that the number of points stated on the driver’s licence are correct as well as check the drivers Tachograph Card and CPC Expiry dates as part of the inclusive cost.

This new service not only simplifies licence checks but also provides peace of mind, ensuring that all drivers in your fleet have the correct credentials to legally operate their vehicles. By integrating this feature into a single app, CheckedSafe continues to enhance the safety and efficiency of fleet management.

CheckedSafe invites other local authorities to learn more about how its services can enhance safety and compliance for licensed taxi drivers.

TIMCON warn of supply chain cost pressures

The Timber Packaging & Pallet Confederation (TIMCON) has warned pallet manufacturers are facing significant increases in the cost of raw material costs passed onto them, pushing prices up for uses – in spite of a currently depressed market.

The organisation, which represents pallet manufacturers and repairers in the UK and Ireland, has advised of several variables, which are causing these increases – none of them related to demand. These include:

● A depressed construction industry - particularly in the housing building sector – which has seen sawmills cutting back on production and subsequently labour.

● Increased prices charged by Scandinavian mills to counter the previous year’s poor trading.

● Issues with the availability of EU logs due to recent increased felling volumes to combat bark beetle outbreak.

● Lower volumes of Canadian timber as the result of forest fires last year and this, which has had a knock-on effect on supplies from the US.

TIMCON Secretary General Stuart Hex said, “TIMCON’s members have reported significant hikes in the price of pallet wood over recent months. The recently published pallet timber index for Q2 shows a further increase of 4.4% for homegrown wood, following on from the 0.3% reported in Q1 – this is the first time we have seen two successive quarters of increase since

Q2 2021 and Q3 2021. We have also seen an 6.5% increase in imported timber from the Baltics, the first reported increase since Q3 2021.

“Since December the UK index has reported a total increase of 4.2%. While this is significantly lower than the 20.1% reported in the German HPE index over the same period, the UK monthly index is clearly showing that prices are continuing to rise in the UK.”

Hex added that, with the UK second only to China as a wood fibre importer, “TIMCON applauds the work that

CONFOR is doing to push for increased tree planting.”

“With some predictions suggesting the country won’t see a recovery in the house building sector until 2025, we hope the newly elected government will introduce measures to stimulate an uplift sooner rather than later,” said Hex.

Soyang to demonstrate its media and hardware options at The Print Show

Soyang Europe will be demonstrating both its media and hardware offerings on its stand at The Print Show this September.

Last year, the company acquired Josero, bringing hardware under the Soyang brand as Soyang Hardware. As a result, the company is able to demonstrate its own media on the hardware it supplies.

Soyang will be showcasing a range of materials for UV, solvent, ecosolvent, and dye-sublimation. The company also offer environmental solutions such as textiles made from recycled yarn and PVC-free banner materials.

Andrew Simmons, sales director of Soyang Media, comments, “We chose to exhibit at The Print Show because we’ve got such a vast range of media and hardware options. We want to be seen to be supporting the industry and we want to show everyone what we have to offer.”

“The big push will be on the sustainability side of the media, so we have textiles made

from recycled yarns and we have PVC-free banner materials which are becoming more and more popular. It’s certainly a growth area in the industry and is something we’ll keep developing moving forward.”

On the hardware side, Soyang Hardware will be showcasing Mimaki’s latest direct-to-film printer, the TxF300-75 along with a shaker unit. Designs will be pressed on the stand using a heat press to demonstrate the full end-to-end process.

Other products will also be demonstrated such

as bottle openers, showing the vast range of applications possible.

Also on show will be UV roll-to-roll and solvent roll-to-roll machines as well as a Bubblefree flatbed application table of which Soyang is the exclusive UK distributor for.

Sarah Fenna, sales director of Soyang Hardware, adds, “We’re really looking forward to being at The Print Show this year. It’s going to be great to be back at the NEC and we have some new products to show everybody!”

“The Print Show is a great opportunity for us to reach a wide range of customers, with it being a local show. So therefore we’ve chosen to bring a mixture of machines along which will hopefully suit everyone’s requirements.”

You can find the team on Stand E01.

Hydro Aluminium UK Ltd demonstrates its commitment to elevating health and safety standards

Hydro Aluminium UK Ltd, a subsidiary of the global aluminium and renewable energy company Norsk Hydro, has demonstrated its commitment to elevating health and safety standards by entering the UK’s leading health and safety awards scheme and scooping two accolades from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Hydro Aluminium UK Ltd was awarded both a Gold Achievement Award and a Best New Entry Award (UK) at this year’s RoSPA Awards for its strong commitment to health and safety. It was awarded the accolade after it took a thorough approach to clearly explaining and demonstrating its health and safety management system in action during the past year.

Bluewater responds to alarming new research on tap water quality

Bluewater, a global leader in water purification and beverage solutions, is calling for immediate action in response to urgent new research that has raised significant concerns about health risks associated with fluoridation of tap water and microplastic contamination to safeguard public health.

The studies reveal links between tap water fluoridation and lower IQ levels in children. They also show growing levels of microplastics in human brains, spotlighting the pressing need for safe drinking water solutions.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has shared a report analysing previously published research that concluded fluoride in drinking water at twice the recommended limit may be linked with lower IQ in children. Various research studies suggested that exposure to elevated fluoride levels, particularly during critical periods of brain development, could correlate with decreased IQ scores.

Low levels of fluoride have been added to drinking water for decades in countries such as the USA, UK, and

Ireland as part of efforts to strengthen teeth and reduce cavities, but the practice is rare in most of continental Europe due to perceived health risks.

The preprint science paper – published by the U.S. National Library of Medicine – reported that the amounts of microplastics found in brain samples and other organs have increased significantly since a similar study in 2016. Microplastics, often derived from the breakdown of plastic products, have been shown to infiltrate water sources and ultimately enter the human body, underscoring the growing urgency for cleaner water solutions.

Pune manufacturing plant scoops top fallprevention accolade

inspirational impact within health and safety at the organisation.

Sponsored by EcoOnline, a leading provider of EHSQ software solutions, RoSPA’s Best New Entry Award recognises outstanding submissions made by organisations entering the RoSPA Awards for the very first time.

The RoSPA Health and Safety Awards is one of the largest occupational health and safety awards programme in the world. Now in its 68th year, the Awards have almost 2,000 entries annually, covering nearly 60 countries and reaching millions of employees. The programme recognises an organisation’s commitment to continuous improvement in the prevention of accidents and ill health at work by looking at entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including practices such as leadership and workforce involvement.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has crowned the winner of its Fall Prevention Trophy following a virtual event this week that saw three shortlisted companies go head-to-head for the industry accolade.

L’Oréal Pune, based in India, were awarded the top trophy following a vote by event attendees, comprised of award winners from the RoSPA 2024 awards scheme. The other two shortlisted companies were support services company Compass Group Healthcare sector, and engineering firm Jacobs Field Services – who were both commended.

RoSPA’s Fall Prevention Trophy seeks to draw on best practice and showcase innovation around fall prevention, both by selecting a high-performer as the overall trophy winner, and also sharing advice and learning on the subject with the wider awards community as part of the selection process.

L'Oréal Pune’s three-step initiative saw a communication campaign that saw all its workforce take RoSPA’s Fall Fighter course, the formation of an exemplary risk assessment strategy and the successful implementation of L’Oréal’s Safe@Work-Safe@Home programme.

The programme, which seeks to take the lessons learned from occupational health and safety into homes and communities, was rolled out to over 2,500 people on the Pune area, including orphanages and assisted living centres.

L’oreal Pune’s main objectives included site surveys of old age homes and identification of STF improvement opportunities, inspections by in-house tech experts and a steady commitment to the Fall Fighters programme.

This holistic approach was especially for combatting the high rate of slips, trips and falls (STP) within the over 65-age bracket, whereby Pune factory workers pledged themselves ‘Fall Fighters’ (a RoSPA-developed slips, trips and fallsprevention course).
