Agricultural Machinery Company of the Month

Growing with you

costs, massively improve yields and thirdly, protect the environment at the same time. All machines are designed and manufactured on-site at the Melbourne site in East Riding, Yorkshire, using bespoke sheet metal and laser cutters by expert Design Engineers and an experienced and highly skilled production team. With an unparalleled reputation across the agricultural machinery sector, Sumo now has an extensive dealer network across the width and breadth of the UK and Ireland, the Baltic region, New Zealand and Australia.

Sumo UK is a market-leading designer and manufacturer of seeding and cultivating equipment. Officially established in 1996, Sumo has diversified over the years from an original fabricating company in the early 1990s to the present-day agricultural powerhouse.

With a primary focus on Conservation Agriculture, Sumo is helping farmers with their primary asset: soil, through its range of innovative farming machinery. The product range includes equipment for: deep and shallow tillage, drilling technology, grassland machinery and associated accessories.

The Trio Combination Cultivator is the oldest product in the entire range, expertly designed for deep tillage. It provides all-in-one functionality, working the entire soil contour from plough to mini-till and can be utilised as a drill with the seeder attachment and Single Disc Opener (SDO) accessories. Many original customers are still happily using the Trio, bought decades earlier, proving that Sumo machinery is built-to-last.

Sumo are intent on helping farmers lower input

We spoke to Charlotte Ellis, Sumo’s resident Marketing Manager, to find out more, “We design and build all our machinery on-site at our Yorkshire site and consider our product range to be hugely environmentally-centric. Looking after the soil is essential to farming agriculture and we want to work in harmony with nature. All our machinery is designed to work with all types of soil from loamy-textured, clay, slit to sandy, across the UK and around the globe.

“Our Direct Drill and DTS Strip-Till Technology is a perfect plough alternative for post-harvest stubble. The Direct Drill works on the zero-till premise – crop residue will become part of the soil profile, through the utilisation of the Direct Drill coulter. This enhances the overall health of soil microbes such as fungi and archaea and even the worms! The crop residue provides muchneeded cover for the soil, by trapping moisture and preparing the soil for young crops. This farming system massively reduces the cultivation stage, due to the now improved natural drainage, soil fertility and overall organic soil matter. This revolutionises soil qualitylowering expensive input costs, increasing the probability of soil quality for strong yields and even protecting the area from carbon loss.

“With the current focus on farming sustainably, the Direct Drill works in harmony with the soil, letting it replenish and at the same time, helping farmers protect and improve yields.

“Similarly, DTS Strip-Till

technology is at the forefront of conservation agriculture. Strip-tillage provides huge improvements in soil structure, drainage, aggregation and erosion, with earmarked tillage helping worm numbers increase, through increasing organic soil levels. The versatile DTS-strip-till coulter can support with seed bedding, drilling, fertilising and reconsolidation simultaneously.”

Interested farmers can contact their local Sumo dealer and request a demonstration and then place an order. Their order will then be built from scratch by the expert team at the Yorkshire site.

Furthermore, there is no need to worry about future servicing or repairs/maintenance as your local dealer will organise all of this for you. Sumo UK will be at the following forthcoming trade shows:

● Tillage Live – 14 September 2023, WH Corbett, Atherstone

● LAMMA 2024 – 17-18 January, NEC, Birmingham.

World-class thermal imaging cameras at The Engineering Design Show 2023

temperature? How can you see if a battery is overheating? Want to see how a bullet travels at high or slow speed? We can show you how with our advanced visible thermogram form technology, digitised with cutting-edge software processing,” explained Matthew.

The Engineering Design Show (EDS) at the Coventry Building Society Arena has been running since 2012 and is the only trade event exclusively dedicated to mechanical, electronics and embedded design. It is the business and networking calendar event for the engineering design sector.

Thermal Vision Research (TVR) is the UK distributor for Teledyne FLIR’S IR thermography camera range, designed for specialist R&D applications. The leading UK distributor partnered with the Aircraft Research Association (ARA), with its Teledyne FLIR T1K camera. ARA is now marketing the FLIR T1K wind tunnel concept design to engineering companies; as a viable blueprint for streamlined, greener aerodynamics, making future long-haul flights more sustainable.

Established in 2017, Thermal Vision Research (TVR) is the brainchild of Director Matthew Clavey and is based at Aztec West business park near Bristol, in South Gloucestershire.

“We have a state-ofthe-art thermal lab at this year’s Engineering Design Show in Coventry. The best way for engineers and designers to understand the true dynamic capacity of our technology is to see it in action. Our range of cameras can support many applications, from electronic component testing, EV battery testing to aircraft, defence or rail network research and many others.

“We are encouraging visitors to come and ask us anything – how do you test for heat or

Matthew Clavey with be at the two-day event with his Bristol-based team to demonstrate with FLIR cameras, computers and tripods and Business Development Managers from FLIR will be on hand to also answer questions.

“We will be showcasing the Teledyne FLIR infrared thermal camera range and introducing attendees to the new Teledyne FLIR Research Studio Professional Edition software.

“This latest release encompasses a Professional Edition with FLIR Research Studio Player-precision designed for R&D applications that are in need of sturdy data capture and analysis and an upgraded version of the FLIR Research Studio Standard Edition. Both versions offer a ‘Connect- ViewRecord- Analyse- Share' workflow, designed to seamlessly identify key thermal data, to make critical decisions.”

The issue of overheated batteries is a hot topic in the industry, especially with the recent push towards EV batteries and associated safety concerns. The Teledyne FLIR high-speed thermal camera reveals heat details through highspeed imaging, perfect for working on key EV battery safety issues. This camera provides more accurate results than previous thermocouples and general IR devices, pinpointing the exact location of shortcircuits and subsequent heat spreading. This is key information for battery design engineers, helping them navigate round potential damage scenarios. The high-speed camera offers unprecedented slow thermal imaging captures at high temperatures of over 700°C and provides comprehensive details of the thermal

management system, during the EV battery testing period.

The FLIR infrared cameras today offer up to 16 times the resolution of standard cameras used a decade ago and are fast becoming a standard thermal measurement tool across multiple test applications, alongside digital multimeters, oscilloscopes and voltage analysers. Infrared has proven advantages over thermocouples for electronic systems designers. They can identify ‘hot spots’ in electronic component testing instantly on electronic circuit boards and are hugely instrumental in helping design a circuit board’s thermal management system.

TVR are happy to come to businesses to demonstrate the camera capabilities on-site and offer camera hiring, lease and purchasing options.

Thermal Vision Research will be exhibiting at The Engineering Design Show at Coventry Building Society Arena from 12-13 October 2023 at Stand G74.

The Ei3030 Multi-Sensor, Aico’s latest innovation in home life safety

Introducing the latest addition to Aico’s technologically advanced 3000 Series, the Ei3030 Multi-Sensor Fire and Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm combines individual Optical, Heat and CO sensors, for the ultimate fire and CO response.

This device can be fitted in any room where both fire and CO protection is required (apart from a kitchen), meaning that coverage is provided with fewer alarms.

Its intelligent built-in dust compensation technology and mesh insect shield around the Optical sensor allows the Ei3030 to self-monitor minute changes in dust levels, recalibrating the alarms trigger point to reduce the risk of false alarms.

The device contains three proven and reliable sensors. The Thermistor Heat Sensor and high performance Optical Sensor work intelligently together but operate independently. An Electrochemical CO Sensor provides an accurate CO response which is translated into the alarms visual indicators that trigger according to which alarm is activated.

Aico’s Ei3030 utilises their easi-fit base, is mains powered, has a tamper proof

10 year rechargeable lithium cell backup, and is compatible with other Aico mains-powered units. The Ei3000MRF can be integrated for wireless interconnection and data extraction via the Ei1000G Gateway. The addition of Environmental Sensors would complete the HomeLINK Connected Home Solution for safer, healthier and more sustainable homes.

Michael Wright, Product Development Manager at Aico, comments, “The Ei3030 continues Aico’s pioneering development of Multi-Sensor Fire and CO alarms for domestic properties by offering both Multi-Sensor fire detection and CO detection from one alarm. This maximises coverage whilst making installation simpler and easier. The alarm sits alongside the Ei3028 Multi-Sensor Heat and CO alarm, meaning users can achieve combined fire and CO coverage for all areas of the home from our flagship 3000 Series.”

This device holds kitemarks for British Standards BS EN 14604:2005, BS 5446-2:2003 and BS EN 50291-1:2018.

Greenbuild

AQMesh is being used for industrial air pollution monitoring around the world because it brings together a range of features and services that have been tailored to the needs of construction, mining, petrochemical and other industrial applications.

The key benefit is just how much can be done with one small, compact, neat and easily-installed unit. Each ‘pod’ is fully customisable, allowing full flexibility of the measurements offered, from a single gas sensor to a ‘fully loaded’ air quality station, measuring six gases, four particulate matter fractions, noise and wind speed and direction. Built to order and fully tested in two weeks, pods can be specified to suit each project at build – or afterwards; requirements can change and it is helpful to be able to reconfigure existing equipment.

As well as long service life expected (all AQMesh pods are sold with a five year manufacturer’s warranty

Simple industrial pollution monitoring with AQMesh

and many have been in use for over ten years) the ability to reconfigure rather than repurchase makes AQMesh an environmentally friendly solution. Pods are tough, designed –and proven – to withstand extremes of temperature, high winds, torrential rain, snow, and are designed for the additional challenges from industrial sites with potentially complex emissions.

Wherever pods are installed, data from all channels are transmitted using any available phone network, repeating connections and storing data where the phone signal is very weak. This provides a complete solution, with readings securely accessed online or transferred to the client database. All data from all pods are completely owned by the user – not the manufacturer or service provider – and nobody else has access to the site’s pollution data.

From installation to output, the AQMesh system reduces time and risk on the ground. Pods are small

and can be held in one hand up a ladder, with only a single universal power cable, which can be connected to a smart solar pack or a direct power supply. Battery operation is another option, and no loggers or wiring are required for data transmission.

Mindful of the costs of local field support, pods require only a twoyear maintenance visit for sensor replacement. All other support can be carried out remotely, with proactive diagnostics for faults or data quality flagging. Sensors failing in the field are immediately detected remotely and a free replacement is sent to site if the sensor is in warranty. After over 10 years of experience monitoring in harsh climates and a range of applications, the AQMesh team is able to offer automated data QA, as well as unlimited customer service and support no matter where you are, how many pods you have or how long you’ve had them.

The team is keen to engage with existing and new customers to find solutions, honestly highlight relevant

limitations, and be as much part of the client team as the client would like. From a single pod rental to proactive management of a large network, AQMesh and the team can direct this best-in-class technology to provide real value. Measurement of multiple pollutants, at multiple locations, can provide much more powerful insight about what is going on in the air than modelling alone, and has the potential to inform site management.

So where to start? AQMesh offers a first step to address curiosity about local air pollution on or around any site, with full confidentiality. Fixed price packages include equipment use, connection and data access and interpretation of readings.

For more information about how the AQMesh team can help get you started on your monitoring journey, chat to us today.

Fastening & Solutions Manufacturing Company of the Month

Beyond fastening: Beyond

In this issue of Sustainability Today, we are delighted to select Beck as our Fastening & Solutions Manufacturing Company of the Month

The Ancient Chinese philosophers believed that the Earth and life force (qi) contained five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal and water. Wood and metal are considered highly incompatible elements, with metal often destroying beautiful carved, wooden furniture.

This Chinese philosophy extends to the building trade, where we are now seeing the effects of decades of metal nails in timber walls.

LIGNOLOC® is an exclusive, pioneering collated nail system from Beck made of renewable central European beech wood. It is the perfect sustainable alternative to metal nails across the timber construction industry. It is the world’s first ‘shootable wooden nail’ – designed to be shot directly into wood without pre-drilling, using the FASCO® LIGNOLOC® pneumatic nailer. LIGNOLOC® contains 66% less CO2 emissions compared to more traditional systems and is at the forefront of the circular economy.

Johannes Haas is a skilled forester and wanted to build his family home using LIGNOLOC® rather than metal nails. After years of working in the trade, he has seen the devastating impact of using metal nails in timber walls and concluded, “Metal and wood do not get on well with each other.”

He wanted to future-proof his family home with fully recyclable materials, so that later down the line, his grandchildren or great-grandchildren weren’t left with hazardous waste residues. He was highly impressed with the quality of the LIGNOLOC® nail system and would wholeheartedly recommend it to builders across the construction trade.

See the video featuring Johannes Haas here: www.linkedin.com/posts/beck-fastening_esfunktioniert-klares-fazit-zum-themaactivity-7087378036660068352-X3Pf?utm_ source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop

The LIGNOLOC® wooden nail system has been used for many projects yet and can be used for a wide variety of applications such as:

t Construction (timber frame construction, massive timber constructions (LCLT, CLT & NLT)

t Cladding: wooden exterior façades and interior wood cladding

t Flooring: OSB & real wood flooring

t Manufacturing: CNC applications

t Bespoke furniture and reclaimed wood designs

t Leisure: sauna designs to sailing boat features

t Funeral: wooden coffins

t Shipping & transportation: pallets and cratesLIGNOLOC® wooden nails and system packaging from Axxum has redefined sustainability with wooden boxes.

This year, BECK, and project partner KEHRATEC, presented a robot-assisted system for the fully or partially automated implementation of timber construction projects, particularly by preassembling completely glue-free and metal-free wall elements. Small and medium-sized timber construction companies and carpenters throughout Europe should be able to manufacture metal and glue-free mass timber wall elements themselves.

Beck was founded in 1904, by Karl Beck as a printing shop in Wildstein/Eger, in present-day Czech Republic. The family-owned company, now in its fourth generation, with Karl Beck’s greatgrandson Christian Beck as CEO, has grown to

become one of the world’s leading premium manufacturers of fastening systems and solutions and continues to drive the original pioneering idea forward.

The dynamic company is a multi-award-winning global powerhouse: with customers across more than 50 countries across the world and eight companies across six locations, including the company headquarters in Mauerkirchen, Upper Austria. Beck has won gold in The German Innovation Award (2022), first place in the ‘process’ category in The MaterialPREIS Award 2022, winner of The German Design Award in 2020 and many other awards.

The Beck brand goes ‘Beyond Fastening’ with its comprehensive range of products around the world such as:

t LIGNOLOC® – collated wooden nails- applicable to timber cladding, wooden furniture, exterior façades and production of cross-laminated timber/solid wood wall systems.

t FASCO® – extensive range of fasteners and tools: staples, pins, collated nails and pneumatic tools.

t SCRAIL® – highly innovative nail screw fasteners

t ET&F® – fastening systems for the light gauge steel construction sector. The special nails with ballistic points can perforate even the hardest substrates.

“Moving forward, we are delighted that we have now obtained the official ETA (European Technical Assessment) code approval for all our LIGNOLOC® wooden nails. This means that the products can be used throughout the EU in the building sector.

“We will be launching our ‘ETA nails with head’ (and ring shaft) in September (the underlying EAD is pending for citation in the Official Journal of EU/ OJEU). The ETA covers nails with diameter 4.7mm and a length range from 52 to 100mm. We plan to launch 78mm as the next length, alongside the existing available 58mm nails. Inch by inch, we are moving forward towards greener, cleaner and better construction.”

Beck was the first company in the world to receive the Circular Globe Label for Circular Economy from Quality Austria/Swiss SQS for its company-wide culture of recyclability through products such as LIGNOLOC®. General Manager and CEO, Christian Beck, was delighted with the sustainability impact and pledged to continue working in this direction, “As a pioneer in fastening technology, we are particularly pleased to be taking bold steps in the field of circular economy and serving as a benchmark in our industry in the field of sustainable management,” adds Michaela.

For plants without optical sorters, the same process stands, but with an alternative setup, collecting from a conveyor or screen, therefore enabling all waste operators to achieve a higher quality material stream.

quality material streams along with increased revenue from recovered recyclable materials while enabling the operator to meet their zero waste targets.

Flexible Plastic Packaging, or FPP, is a valuable resource that can be repurposed. It can also be an awkward contaminant to quality waste streams and recovering it can be a challenge.

Plastic flexible packaging or film is still a major consideration for waste management facilities and is present in most household waste streams. It has low value when compared with other major streams such as fibre, metals, or rigid plastics, but it still needs to be separated.

The Impact AirLift system has been designed to work in conjunction with optical separators which are

generally utilised to not only grade rigid polymer types, but increasingly to quality control fibre, OCC (old corrugated containers), and rigid plastic streams.

The AirLift system is a method of capturing the rejected materials as the optic targets them, sucking out the flexible packaging and film while the material is in flight. The collected film is pneumatically conveyed through ductwork and discharged in a central location for storage, baling or further

The Breteau Foundation

By working closely with optical separator suppliers, plant builders & MRF operators, Impact Air Systems have been able to optimise the separation efficiency and capture rates, maximising film collection rates, while minimising losses of major commodity stream such as fibre, OCC, and rigid plastics such as container, pots, tubs, and trays.

Impact’s AirLift ensures high

There has been particular interest in the UK and USA for the Impact AirLift, with 13 systems being installed in the USA throughout 2023 and 2024.

www.impactairsystems.com

The benefits of Impact’s AirLift solution include:

t Improves the quality of the material stream by effectively removing FPP

t Reduces maintenance of downstream machinery due to FPP blockages

t Potential to increase film and flexible packaging recovery to be used as a fuel source

t Significantly reduces manual sorting labour requirements and costs

t Significantly improves the performance of downstream processes by removing unwanted/tangling contaminants

t High material throughput capabilities

TheBreteau Foundation, a nonprofit organisation with a vision to provide access to quality education for all children, has teamed up with award-winning global independent animation studios ZAG and Mediawan Kids & Family to create an initiative aiming to inspire the next generation of ambassadors for change in the fight against plastic – Plastic Changemakers.

Created by educational and environmental experts and aligned to curricula, the FREE Plastic Changemakers Education Pack for teachers contains five modules for 7-11 year olds and seeks to equip children with a comprehensive knowledge about plastics and how individuals and communities can use it more responsibly. It is set out to address

the clear demand from teachers with a comprehensive Education Pack that contains a flexible set of ready-to-go lesson plans and activities designed to empower children to affect change.

The Breteau Foundation surveyed over 500 UK primary school teacher and found they have collectively spent £13 million of their own funds to provide pupils with environmental education. Teachers taking part in the study identified plastic pollution as being the most important subject to address when teaching children about the environment, followed by the climate crisis and sustainability.

The drainage experts Lanes Group have announced the launch of their fifth Unblocktober campaign. The campaign is calling on both individuals and businesses to take the Unblocktober pledge. The pledge asks the UK public to improve our drain health and reduce the impact that our waste is having on our climate and environment in the UK.

Unblocktober is a revolutionary month-long initiative that began in 2019 and is entirely driven by the British public. It takes place in October and aims to enhance the health of our drains, sewers, watercourses and seas. The

Jacob Larkin, spokesperson for Unblocktober, said, “Since our first campaign in 2019, we've seen signups to Unblocktober rise from 4,500 to over 66,000. We are incredibly proud of the efforts of the British public and businesses to tackle the climatic and ecological

LEGO designer’s appeal: Back me again on fatberg model

The designer at the centre of a campaign to persuade LEGO to make a new model featuring drainage engineers tackling a fatberg has told Lanes Group plc the Whitechapel fatberg was the main inspiration for his idea.

Wastewater operatives from Lanes, working for water company Thames Water, carried out most of the work to clear the giant fatberg in London’s East End in 2017.

The designer, who goes by the name of MOCingbird, revealed that after reading about the Whitechapel fatberg, which weighed over 130 tonnes, he set about creating a slightly smaller one – out of LEGO bricks.

MOCingbird acknowledges his inspiration for the proposed new LEGO model – and appeals for continued support for his idea – in a question and answer interview given to Lanes, the UK’s largest independent wastewater and drainage specialist.

He also reveals:

t Lanes was the first drainage company to write to LEGO supporting the model idea,

As the model – Sewer Heroes: Fighting the Fatberg – was not one of those selected for production by LEGO when considered by its panel of experts, MOCingbird is determined to put it forward again.

That will involve reaching the 10,000 vote target yet again, and he reveals he still needs thousands of votes.

Lanes Group Development Director, Richard Leigh, said, “We’re 100% behind this second push to have the model marketed by LEGO. It would be an excellent way to give consumers an insight into the challenges of keeping sewers flowing across the world, and how they can help drainage

“Now, however, is not the time to rest on our laurels. Unblocktober 2023 gives us the opportunity to build on the key wins of the last five years and continue to improve our drain health. Reducing the environmental impact of issues such as fatbergs and wet wipe usage is a key factor improving the overall health of our waterways. Sustainable farming

In a time of transformational change in our Agri-food system, never before have farmers been so keen to understand the sustainability credentials of their actions. Agrii, a UK agronomy provider, are leading the way in providing holistic advice, utilising new technologies and the best scientific evidence to improve on farm sustainability.

Recognising the demands for emission reductions, Agrii’s role is to help farmers understand how to adopt lower carbon practices while maintaining viability. Working with academia and manufacturers, they are working towards a net zero food supply chain.

It all starts with growing resilience, by focusing on soil health and helping farmers adopt management practices to maximise efficiency. An

improved soil supports a healthier plant, enhanced biodiversity, and increased carbon storage.

Secondary to appropriate soil management, inputs become an important consideration. An example being nitrogen fertilisers. With crucial importance for maintaining food security and reducing emissions, Agrii have been expanding their range of more efficient nutrition products. Their ‘greener’ range have a less intensive manufacturing process, and can help reduce nitrous oxide emissions by up to 61%.

Thissummer, UPL opened the doors of their brandnew Shray Hill research facility in Shropshire, revealing an incredible array of trials focused primarily on biological solutions.

Illustrating UPL’s commitment to more sustainable crop protection, 70% of the research at Shray Hill includes work on bio-pesticides, bio-stimulants and plant or soil health enhancers. They market these products under their Natural Plant Protection (NPP) brand. “UPL has been on a journey to be more sustainable over the last five years,” explains Gemma Nokes, UPL’s head of marketing for the UK and Ireland. “We started by creating OpenAg research sites like this one. Next, we developed the NPP brand to promote the biosolutions we bring to the market.

“The most successful products in our NPP portfolio are Iodus and Thiopron (sulphur), which are biofungicides. These are both registered fungicides, which is crucial because they have been fully

approved for disease control according to a weight of evidence we have demonstrated to the authorities.

“We do not see NPP replacing conventional chemistry. We want biological and chemical crop protection to work together in appropriate programmes. This will create a sustainable approach which maintains what we already have and develops exciting new solutions.”

To drive the adoption of biological solutions by farmers, UPL’s UK country manager, Vaughn Stansfield, believes that their role is to provide a body of evidence that NPP can deliver the same value as conventional crop protection.

“Agronomists and farmers are always balancing risk and reward,” says Vaughn. “They need to have confidence that the data on our NPP products has been collected to a high standard. We must develop quality products that deliver a benefit in use.

“Take Iodus, for example. We launched it two years ago as a plant health elicitor to be applied at T0 in winter wheat fungicide programmes. It is an unconventional product used within a conventional framework so that farmers can understand it more easily. We have seen the adoption rate increase over the two years, and now agronomists and farmers have witnessed the product perform in a high disease-pressure year. We expect its use to increase significantly next spring.

“NPP is central to UPL’s strategy, illustrated by our investment in R&D in this area. Our target is for double-digit growth of biosolutions every year for the foreseeable future. If the industry is going to transition to a more sustainable footing, then this kind of ambition is required to rise to the challenge,” concludes Vaughn.

Neptune’s harvest: Sustainable biostimulants

Becoming a sustainable solutionist isn’t easy – especially as biostimulants seem to have this snake-oil reputation even after significant positive scientific data being published over recent years. Like us homosapien’s needing nutrition and vitamins – plants need regular supply of both macro and micronutrients to maximise their yield potential. Like us they can and do suffer stress over the seasonal growing period. So, what’s the solution?

Biostimulants

t Better root development

t Increased uptake

t Improved macro/micro availability

t Aids efficient N uptake

t Reduction of abiotic and biotic stress levels

Natures Crops International is a global supplier of specialty plant oils for food, supplements, cosmetics and pet industries. Using seeds grown on contract with UK farmers, they offer high margin buy-back contracts for low input, regeneratively suitable break crop species such as Ahiflower® and Meadowfoam.

As the richest known non-GM plant-based Omega 3,6,9 fatty acid source, Ahiflower has a number of expanding markets in the food, supplement, cosmetic and pet arenas. As a replacement for fish oils, the demand is increasing annually. Ahiflower is an excellent rotational break crop, and could replace OSR, linseed, beans, sugar beet, etc, in the crop rotation.

Meadowfoam is an attractive winter

sown annual plant, the seeds of which produce an oil valuable in cosmetics for its excellent moisturising, UV protection and stability properties. The seeds of Meadowfoam contain around 25-30% oil. Natures Crops International have exclusive rights to a number of high yielding Meadowfoam varieties.

Contracts are only available to meet known orders, at a fixed price not linked to external market or commodity crop sources. Contact Simon Meakin at: smeakin@naturescrops.com if interested in becoming a grower for Ahiflower or Meadowfoam.

Often confusing and often left out –understanding the plant’s requirements is a start. Then it’s a case of adding in sustainable biostimulants translocators to help enhance and improve leaf uptake. Active liquid foliar applied micronutrients and biostimulants (beneficial translocators/ enhancers) are 90% soluble translocating very quickly and easily into the plant. Which means any products tank mixed with the above will result in a quicker more efficient uptake.

The addition of seaweed, humic, fulvic acid and lignin (the biostimulant bit) do bring greater results to the table with:

Biostimulants can be summed up as metabolic enhancers, containing active plant growth substances such as auxins and cytokinins which are beneficial to the plant’s development mainly derived from the sustainable seaweed source. Add in nutrients and hey presto…

Biostimulants (plant health enhancers) have the market potential to grow considerable bigger than the current pesticide supply industry.

May well do – with all the interest in regeneration agriculture, carbon footprints, less fertiliser usage recent legislation and sustainable farming, biostimulants may at last loose that negative snake oil image they now don’t deserve and be redefined as what they really are a sustainable Neptune harvest.

Solar thermal: Reducing energy demands to cut carbon & costs

Capable of offsetting typically around 30% of the energy demands for water heating, solar thermal systems are ideal for organisations which rely on large amounts of domestic hot water (DHW).

Modular, high-performance flat plate collectors with integrated solar fluid (glycol) drain back are by far the most efficient way to heat water with solar energy. The solar fluid transfers solar energy as heat to the collector’s meander absorber to system water via an indirect cylinder. Drain back prevents overheating damage and increases

a system’s lifespan. Together this offers a smaller footprint compared to equivalent solar photovoltaics (PV) for DHW. A typical 4 kW PV system requires approximately 16 panels covering 25m2 of roof to match just three flat plate collectors covering just 6.6m2 roof area. This makes solar thermal a prime choice when roof or façade space is limited.

For existing buildings with gasfired water heating solar thermal is employed as a system pre-heat, reducing demands for gas to actively cutting carbon emissions from the buildings. Commercial new build and refurbishment however are either mandated or opting to shift to direct electric which remains substantially more expensive to operate than gas – currently by a factor of 3.8. This has driven interest in hybrid approaches which harnesses solar thermal preheat. Necessary after heat is simply secured

with a packaged Adveco FUSION E electric water heating system combining an electric boiler and cylinder.

The hybrid approach can be further extended with the inclusion of air source heat pumps (ASHP) to provide the initial pre-heat for the system. Operating at lower temperatures with the cold feed maximises the efficiency of the heat pump, reducing electrical operating costs and raising working flow temperatures from 10°C to 40°C. This is not hot enough for commercial applications, so the pre-heated water is then passed to the mid-solar thermal system to boost the working flow temperatures to at least 50°C. Although not operating at maximum potential, there is enough advantage gained from solar thermal to warrant the additional system complexity and capital investment.

During summer months it is possible for the ASHP and solar thermal system to deliver the necessary 60°C working flows. But to ensure safe, consistent, and necessary high operational temperatures, the water is passed to the FUSION electric water heater. Here final consistent water temperatures of

up to 65°C are assured year-round.

To date, Adveco has designed and supports more than 800 live solar thermal systems across the UK and such hybrid approaches are unavoidable if commercial projects seek a sensible, practical, and cost-effective path to lowcarbon hot water.

Flexible working is really here to stay: what now for businesses?

There’s nothing revolutionary in the statement “flexible working is here to stay”. Over the past few years, hybrid and home working have metamorphosed from quietly growing trends to major facets of Britain’s business life.

Despite the familiarity now inherent in the term ‘hybrid’, Britain’s flexible working culture is still solidifying its identity, and last month, the Flexible Working Bill 2023 was passed through Royal Assent. As this bill makes it harder for employers to ignore the rise in popularity of hybrid and remote working, how can businesses make the most out of this new way of working?

While there’s no doubt that the UK

workforce has embraced flexible working, what’s clear is that this flexibility does not eliminate the importance of in-person collaboration. Indeed, 85% of UK workers say they want to pursue a hybrid workstyle. Companies should capitalise on this continued call for collaboration by encouraging their team back together, on a flexible basis.

This is where serviced, flexible offices come in. Providing regular social events and offering a serviced workspace, where employees have access to on-site facilities such as gyms and cafés, can all help to earn the commute, making flexible offices such as those provided by Office Space in Town the ideal locum for businesses hoping to retain a sense of community. Central office locations, comfortable break-out spaces, and up-to-date amenities combine to promote the collaboration that employees continue to crave, even at a time of flexible working.

UNISIG makes significant investment in plant technology and equipment

UNISIG, a global manufacturer of deep hole drilling machines, has invested $1.5 million in state-of-the-art technology and equipment for the company’s newly constructed 5,000-square-foot fabrication department.

The expansion supports the company’s strategy to develop in-house, design-tofinish production of high-quality sheet metal components used in UNISIG’s product line. By producing many of its parts in-house, the company can preserve and maintain the quality and quantity of its components while optimising the mix of parts that are made internally versus those that are outsourced for production.

The investment includes the installation of fibre laser cutting equipment, and a 242-ton capacity press brake with a 7-axis programmable back gage, all of which utilises 3D programming and simulation software. The software and training for the company’s workforce were part of the investment, along with the hiring of additional personnel.

The company’s new fabrication capabilities will also serve as an inspiration and catalyst for ongoing development and advances in machine design that will have an immediate impact on the value UNISIG brings to its customers now and in the future, said UNISIG CEO, Anthony Fettig.

“The most exciting part of this investment from my view is the opportunity to fundamentally

change how we think about the design of fabricated components. Our engineers will be inspired by the manufacturing innovations generated by the precision fabrication team and what we can do with these state-of-the-art production capabilities,” Fettig said.

UNISIG’s fabrication enhancements also include MIG and TIG welding with advanced digital process control and weld boom with power assist. A modular fixture system provides precision component setup from 3D models, while a vertical pallet system stores raw sheet material. To assist department personnel, vacuum sheet lifting equipment and updated bridge crane controls make for easy material handling.

Further information on all machines and the complete UNISIG machine programme is available at: www.unisig.com or follow the company on LinkedIn and Twitter (@UNISIG). You will also meet us at the EMO 2023 show in Hannover, Germany, from 18th-23rd September.

BVC IV62 Cordless Industrial Vacuum: Eliminate trailing cables

Until recently a cordless or battery powered Industrial Vacuum Cleaner has either meant a low-powered hand held or back-pack unit or a heavy and clumsy machine with several heavy on-board ‘leisure’ batteries that take a long time to charge, and still may not have enough performance to be wholly satisfactory.

Quirepace have re-invented the battery powered Industrial Vacuum Cleaner by combining the well proven mid-range BVC IV60 with Honda’s revolutionary new eGX battery powered engine. The BVC IV60 is usually a 1-2kW electrically powered unit utilising the extremely robust BVC YP series multistage exhauster unit.

The Honda eGX electric engine is designed to replace petrol engines in the 2.5hp class and provides more than adequate power to run the BVC YP3 exhauster unit at full design speed. This new machine is designated BVC IV62.

The Honda eGX variable speed drive allows the operator to set the run-speed for the optimum performance for the job in hand. At full power

the IV62 eGX has a runtime of 30 minutes, and at slower speed this can be extended to over 2.5 hours. The eGX fast charger provides 80% charge in 1 hour and 100% charge in 1.5 hours, making continuous running possible with spare batteries.

The BVC IV62 as standard is provided with the 3-stage filtration dry product tank consisting of a paper sack collection, microfibre main filter and 3rd stage HEPA filter. This configuration is suitable for most dry-product collection applications, and the unit may be configured as both M-Class and H-Class rated units.

Optionally, different collection tanks can be specified for applications that require, for example, a wet collection tank, or are better suited to a droptank rather than paper-sack collection. As is usual with BVC Industrial Vacuum Cleaners there are a vast range of tool and hose options. IV62 is configured to use either 51mm or 38mm hose and tool sets depending on the application and the nature of the product to be cleaned.

The BVC IV62 eGX makes it possible to clean up the industrial workplace without the hassle and hazard of trailing cables. Instantly available power combined with a large collection volume means that it has never been easier to maintain the cleanliness of the workplace, and of course, enhance the health and safety of the environment for the benefit of all.

The BVC IV62 eGX is also ideally suited for use with high-level cleaning equipment. To coincide with the introduction of the BVC IV62 eGX, Quirepace are simultaneously introducing a range of carbon fibre high level cleaning poles configured for use with BVC Industrial Vacuum Cleaners. The pole sets

and tools allow high-level cleaning up to 13m from the ground. Again, the ability to carry out cleaning operations without the risks associated with trailing power cables is a significant benefit to safe operation in the busy industrial environment.

BVC equipment (the original British Vacuum Cleaners) are manufactured by Quirepace in Fareham, Hampshire. UK Manufacture means that spares and support are readily available, and, as usual, BVC UK manufactured machines and components have a 5 year parts warranty. The IV62 eGX has been tested and approved by Honda. The eGX engine and battery, while not directly covered by the BVC extended guarantee are directly warrantied by Honda under their global warranty and service-centre scheme. In the UK this provides a 3 year warranty on engines and 2 year warranty on batteries and chargers.

Why are emergency safety showers important?

In workplaces where employees are exposed to hazardous substances, ensuring their safety becomes paramount. Accidental spills & chemical splashes can occur, putting workers at risk of serious injuries or even lifethreatening situations. To mitigate these risks, emergency safety showers play a vital role in preventing further harm and reducing the severity of injuries.

Key features & functionality:

1. Quick Activation – Safety showers are designed for immediate activation to minimise the exposure time to hazardous substances. In an emergency, every second counts, and a prompt response can significantly reduce the impact on the affected individual.

2. Full-Body Coverage – These showers are designed to deliver a wide, coneshaped spray pattern, covering the entire body. This ensures thorough rinsing & decontamination, regardless of the extent of the exposure.

3. Easy Accessibility – Safety showers should be strategically located in areas where the risk of exposure is high. They should be easily accessible, clearly marked, and free from any obstructions to ensure employees can reach them swiftly in

case of an emergency.

4. Adequate Water Supply – Safety showers require a continuous supply of clean water to operate effectively. The water should be maintained at a tepid water temperature to prevent any further discomfort or injury to the affected person.

5. Eye/Face Wash Stations – In addition to safety showers, many safety showers are equipped with eye and face wash stations. These features provide immediate irrigation to the eyes and face, helping to flush out hazardous substances and alleviate potential eye injuries.

Providing solutions for your measurement applications

Interface Force is an internationally recognised brand and decades of experience have gone into making Interface manufactured load cells the benchmark for thousands of users around the world, and Interface Force Measurements was established in 1996 by Neil Johnstone.

Based in Crowthorn, Berkshire, Interface Force

distributes to the whole of the UK & Ireland, but also overseas, especially into Turkey, Greece and the Middle East. The company is a primary distributor for Load Cells manufactured by Arizona-based Interface Inc, and it also supplies their Torque Transducers, associated electronics, multi-access Load Cells and the XSensor Pressure Mapping systems.

The global Interface Inc. is represented by a large network of distributors outside of the US, and they have requested products that are designed and manufactured in metric, with the precision and accuracy of all Interface products. These products are designed for an international buyer and user, and all specifications are in metric specs, a global standard for force measurement products.

Interface Force work mainly with aerospace, automotive, and motorsport companies, and Business Development Manager, Tony Rokins, told us, “We work closely with companies which are undertaking research into product

development, and so this includes universities and also medical companies who need load cells for weighing saline bags – we have a very wide and varied client portfolio.”

In this crowded industry, Interface load cells and torque sensors have a hard-won reputation for

BAIT is sponsored by European Springs & Pressings – see them on page 8 20 Test, Measurement & Laboratory

force or torque

reliable, accurate and repeatable test results. The range of pressure sensors and pressure mapping systems from industry leaders GP50 & XSensor back this reputation.

Tony continued, “With regards to force measurement, our load cells are preferred by aerospace companies because they are highly accurate, and the results are very repeatable. Also, the devices themselves are extremely reliable and so they are looked on very favourably by both automotive and aerospace manufacturers in particular.”

Interface Force is currently re-launching its XSensor High Speed Pressure Mapping System – the company offers a range of pressure mapping systems that can be applied to anything from impact testing to pressure testing tires, runways, beds, seats and much more. The XSensor system is the first system design to allow product designers and safety testing engineers to see, record and evaluate the distribution of force from highspeed impacts on safety equipment such as helmets and body armour.

The system is particularly popular with automotive and aerospace seating manufacturers as evaluating the performance of helmets and other protective equipment designed to prevent injury requires detailed understanding of the pressure distribution on the body surface during dynamic impacts. Xsensor’s high speed HS Impact system combined with the thin conformable sensors allows customers to accurately measure

those pressures and evaluate how different design configurations affect pressure distribution on impact.

In addition to this, the system is also used by manufacturers of office seating, companies that develop seating for the home, and bed manufacturers.

In spite of its success in the industry, Interface Force is very much looking to future development. Tony informed us, “We are building new Applications which are based around renewable energy, and we are also developing Cloud-based, Wifi and Bluetooth data acquisitions by making our devices wireless. This would mean customers being able to collect data from anywhere in the world via an App.”

This ever-growing comprehensive range of indicators, signal amplifiers, data loggers and wireless transmitters has been designed to complement the extensive range of load cells, torque transducers and pressure sensors, and the range has developed to ensure that customers have access to the most accurate, up-to-date, and costeffective devices available.

Another new development is in the Airport environment, where Interface Force have begun to provide wireless monitoring of equipment on, for example, luggage carousels, and this product among many others have helped Interface Force to have a very successful past 12 months especially.

Interface Force’s product reliability is second to none and all of its product lines have to match this standard before ever being recommended to customers. Interface is the world’s trusted leader in technology, design and manufacturing of force measurement solutions. Its clients include a ‘who’s who’ of so many industries, and the company’s engineers around the world are empowered to create high-level tools and solutions that deliver consistent, high-quality performance.

Enhanced productivity with highperformance error diagnosis

Schmersal launches new version of the SD Gateway

The Schmersal Group is about to launch a new version of the SD Gateway for its SD bus. Users will be able to take advantage of the improved fault diagnostics offered by the new SDG Fieldbus Gateway. This in turn will help to increase machine and plant productivity by minimising downtime and simplifying commissioning and maintenance. The device is also user friendly and easy to install.

Electronic safety sensors and interlocks with SD interface can transmit comprehensive status and diagnostic data to a higherlevel machine control system. Data from the serially connected switchgear is sent via the SD bus to the SDG fieldbus gateway and then passed on via the fieldbus to the machine control unit – enabling the forwarding of error messages such as overtemperature warnings, faulty actuator warnings and invalid actuator combination messages.

The diagnostic information is transmitted separately from safety signals. Warning notifications enable controlled process shutdown and targeted maintenance so as to prevent process interruptions.

The new variant of the SD Gateway also offers a web server and has a microSD memory card and thus offers the following features:

● Event logs can be evaluated in real time via the web interface.

● Complete diagnostic data from all safety switchgear devices are displayed in plain text in the browser window.

● Devices, such as interlocks and control panels, can be controlled directly via the web interface.

● The microSD card allows event logs to be exported for evaluation and long-term storage.

● The configuration of the series connection is stored on the microSD card to enable seamless device replacement in case of error.

In the near future, Schmersal will further expand the functionalities of the SDG fieldbus gateway so that the data of the connected safety switchgear can be transmitted not only via EtherCAT, but also via the common fieldbus protocols PROFINET, EtherNet/IP and Modbus. In addition, networking options will be expanded through connection to IO-Link and OPC UA communication systems.

An additional and significant benefit of the SD bus system is being retained in the new Gateway: by connecting sensors and interlocks with the SD bus in series (an SD Gateway can communicate with up to 31 safety switchgear devices), this safety solution enables extremely lean wiring and reduces costs without sacrificing Performance Level (series connection for applications up to PL e). Setup and commissioning of an SD installation have been designed to be as convenient and straightforward as possible and all devices receive addresses from the Gateway automatically.

The best available technique that is revolutionising breather valve testing

of ownership and protect the environment better than the false economy of buying cheap equipment. Located in Cornwall, Assentech also has two satellite offices based in Gloucestershire and Yorkshire. The level of specialist expertise and comprehensive service comes completely unrivalled and reflects the quality and reliability of its team members who are committed to providing clients with a unique set of benefits to which they cannot find elsewhere.

Assentech was incorporated by Ewart Cox in 2008, who has 25 years’ industry experience, with the main aim of supplying quality equipment as well as providing technical advice and maintenance support for tank storage, fluid transfer and process safety applications.

Currently, Assentech supplies products from quality manufacturers located across the Globe. Always focused on delivering quality solutions with focus on the environment, site safety, operating efficiency to protect assets, improved profitability, safeguarding stakeholder confidence and evidence compliance.

’Buying once, buying well’ is a familiar phrase with Assentech customers who are encouraged to evaluate their product selection by understanding the technical specifications of well designed, quality products and not base their purchase decisions solely on price.

Assentech firmly believes that quality products have lower cost

“Assentech’s core strength is our comprehensive understanding of breather valve functionality, compliance and comparative knowledge of the breather valve marketplace, providing our customers with a unique and supportive overview to help guide decision makers.”

“We are extremely proud to be certified by a UKAS accredited company to ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001. Our enviable reputation is the outcome of our core strengths which are to provide specialist engineering services, environmental solutions and safety equipment for process industries dealing with flammable, hazardous or corrosive substances.”

“Our main objective is to help clients achieve regulatory compliance, reduce emissions and optimise their production processes,” stated Debbie Pearce, Director.

Assentech Management is also represented on two International Standards Committees, with Ewart Cox currently writing an environmental annexe for API2000.

In recent news, Assentech has just launched its new innovation: Vent-Less. A ground-breaking technology that is automated with AI and algorithms. The Vent-Less AI technology has automated 2-minute testing, aligned to the test protocol

of API2000 International Standard. Both vacuum and pressure ports are tested. An instantaneous, traceable and irrefutable API2000 Test Report is generated which includes verified flow curve, set point and leak rate as well as QR code labelling to simplify asset management and retrieval of test data.

A huge risk to any tank storage facility is through the breather valves that are installed on a tank. A breather valve or also known as a PVRV (Pressure and Vacuum Relief Valve) is a valve that protects tanks and vessels from overpressure and vacuum conditions. It opens when the internal pressure exceeds a set point, allowing excess pressure to escape, and opens again when the internal pressure drops below atmospheric pressure to prevent collapse. It’s widely used in various industries to maintain safety and prevent equipment damage or product loss.

With the focus on the environment, Assentech has spent 8 years of R&D to develop Vent-Less which is designed to check functionality, sealing and performance of individual breather valves on both vacuum and pressure ports.

“Vent-Less will provide a full leak and functionality test in less than two minutes as well as irrefutable results. The technology is revolutionising tank storage facilities and is unique to the world providing a best available technique to quantify, monitor and reduce emissions for environmental reporting, ESG metrics and providing valuable data for net zero analytics,” said

Debbie. You can find out more here: www.assentech.co.uk/ automatic-mobile-smart-testbench-for-breather-valves-pvrv-prvvrv-improve-efficiency-and-reduceemissions/

Vent-Less was recently used by a customer from an anaerobic digestion waste to energy facility who was looking for ways to defend pending enforcement by the Environment Agency for emissions violation. After Assentech measured the methane leak rate of the vents they removed and replaced, the results were outstanding. The reduction in valve leak rate dropped from 90cfh (cubic feet per hour) to 0.08cfh at 90% of set point. Saving the equivalent of 200 double decker buses of leaked emissions to 0.2 of one bus. IPCC calculations this reduction represents a reduction in environmental impact cost from £62,000 to £57 per valve per annum. Vent-Less is a key instrument in Leak Detection And Repair (LDAR) planning for compliance with the Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) because it is the only technology available to quantify the volume of leakage from a valve.

In support of this innovation, Assentech has also launched a free to use environmental methane leakage calculator on its website which provides clarity on both the environmental and financial costs to leakage.
