A turbine pulls a stream of water through a tank equipped with a mesh (2) that filters out all solid waste.

From there, the flow is separated into two parts: Flow 1 : the turbine pumps away the clean water.

Flow 2: surface water, polluted with oil and hydrocarbons, is leaded into a hydrocarbon tank (3), where the hydrocarbons are stored floating on the water. They are transferred continuously on a tanker.

DUring the recovery, the transfer of hydrocarbons is continuous, which makes the recovered quantity unlimited.

3 -Working during any weather conditions : the floating arms functioning The self floating arms are connected to the boat by a rotating shaft, which enables them to ride the waves independently of the boat.

All of the surface pollutants trapped by the arms (1) are sucked up into the boat.

At a speed of 4 knots, the ECOCEANE boat can be followed by a tanker.

EFFICIENCY OPTIMISATION BY THE SWELL ABSORBER

By the combination of four phenomenon (amortisation of horizontal energy, dissipation of vertical energy, the absorption of the energy by the friction, smoothing the free surface by the acceleration) oil spill recovery arms patented by ECOCEANE operate as the absorbers of the swell.

4 - Separating the transfer from the recovery

We transfer only pure hydrocarbons.

Ships have, depending on their size, self-cleaning storage capacity. In case of a major spill, they can continuously transfer the recovered oil to tankers, which ensure the removal of oil, and allow a cleaning 24h/24.

Continuous transfer : The hydrocarbon tank functioning transferred hydrocarbons The pump floats in the water of the hydrocarbon tank with the pump suction placed in the hydrocarbons.

Once all the hydrocarbons in the tank have been transferred, the loss of level instantly stops the pump. The pump starts again once a new layer of hydrocarbons has been recovered.

Special case: If the recovered pollution is already emulsified by the environment, it cannot be transferred.

If the separator is filled with emulsion, it is isolated and heated by means of and a generator to separate the hydrocarbons from the water.

5 - Safety of passengers All our ocean-going vessels have the Oil Recovery Ship classification from Bureau VERITAS. The living areas are protected.

With the exception of the deployment of a transfer hose during the transfer on standby tankers, no external presence is required during the cleanup operations.

Lower the risk

For firefighting , the efficiency requirement has led to pool resources and create the first professional teams : «Firefighters».

This economic model is not really applicable in the field of oil recovery at sea.

Oil companies individually bear the risk generated by their activity, states suffer the ecological consequences of pollution. Does not satisfy either of the two parties.

Pooling cleaning equipment Increase of maritime and offshore drilling adds to coastal hazards, offshore risks. Effective protection involves the pooling of cleaning equipment.

This model is mostly required by the various heads of environmental protection department, and involves the creation of entities in charge of the protection and of fighting marine pollution.

Harbor Port and coastline maintenance

CATAGLOP Floating waste – both solid and liquid waste accumulates in ports, often in difficult to access areas.

CataglopÂŽ vessels work as surface vacuums. With their lateral fenders, they are able to operate between other vessels, along pontoons and docks.

They are built of aluminum, making them light and having a robust structure.

The vessels work at 4 to 5 knots in winds of up to Force 6/7, cleaning a surface area of 35 000 to 60 000 m²/hour. They can sweep up to 150 m3 of hydrocarbons per hour, without creating any emulsion, transferring the recovered hydrocarbons to tankers that follow the workboat.The rotation of those tankers allows the vessels to have unlimited recovery capacity.

In order to combat chemical spills, absorbents can be carried on board and spread on the pollution using the fire-fighting water cannon.

This warship can intervene at any time during its patrols to occasionally cleanup pollution in a contaminated area, while retaining its patrol ship capabilities.

Crisis management vessel hospital Boat 98m

Crisis Management & Intervention vessel, is the title of the thesis of engineers Brian Ardis, Lewis Brown, Guy Drori , Daniel O’Connor and Yiannis Raptodimos who studied in Strathclyde, Scotland update.

In this study, they imagine how operational crisis management vessels could be perfected. Analysing the needs and also the existing solutions on the market, they concluded that an OSRV would be appropriate to serve as a base for the various facilities, and particularly those related to dealing with oil spills. AnNexe « If nothing is done to fight a pollution at sea, the only way to stop it is a coastline ».

A - SEA DECONTAMINATION CONTEXT Actual limits of oil recovery at sea

1 Spreading of hydrocarbons Hydrocarbons that are lighter than water spread very rapidly on the surface.

It is essential to respond as quickly as possible.

2 Working speed When using sweeping arms and booms, the speed of vessels is limited to less than 1 knot.

At this speed, the vessel cannot move at more than force 3 of Beaufort scale.

It is essential to work at more than 3 knots.

3 emulsion Pumping the thin-layer of hydrocarbons in sea water with skimmers or pump’s, produces the movement which mixes the hydrocarbons with the water and creates a mayonnaise-like mixing commonly known as emulsion.

This emulsion (up to 75% water) increases the viscosity of the hydrocarbons.

This phenomenon does not allow direct storage on tankers. Storage of the hydrocarbons recovered in the form of emulsion can only be carried out if it is heated in special tanks in order to separate the hydrocarbons

from the water. Consequently the time that it takes to perform this operation determines the speed of the recovery of the hydrocarbons.

It is fundamental not to create emulsion during the collect process.

4 Discharge Hydrocarbons are generally stocked on board the oil recovery vessel. Despite the fact that the quantity of hydrocarbons, that is recovered during an oil spill, is very little or almost zero, all the same, oil recovery systems must be stopped during discharge.

B - existing means Sweeping arms:

FLOATING BOOMS: Used at sea (figure C) they behave in the same way as the sweeping arms and become ineffective at sea states above Force 3.

They are useful for special protection purposes such as deliveries, port entrances, coves, etc.

As an example, 250 linear meters of boom encircles 5000 m2 and does not resolve the problem of the hydrocarbons recovery.

The arms are positioned on both sides of a ship to thicken and collect the layers of hydrocarbons.

This technique requires the ship to operate at a speed of less than 1 knot and this means it is impossible to work in sea states higher than force 3. If the vessels operate faster, the hydrocarbons cannot be trapped between the arms.

In fact, (Figure A) the acceleration of the flow at the end of the arm creates a vortex venturi effect, which sucks up the hydrocarbons that have already been stored.

CHEMICAL DISPERSANTS: These products break down the hydrocarbon molecules and accelerate biodegradability. The pollution sinks in columns, but stays at the bottom of the sea in clouds.

At this time, we do not known about the long-term consequences for the environment using dispersants.

View from above: The water in front of the arms acts as a mass and deflected the flow toward the boundary of the arms, creating acceleration and a venture effect that deflected hydrocarbons outwardly of the arms.

OTHER SYSTEMS: Cutaway side: The hydrocarbons trapped between the arms are subject to a high pressure / negative pressure effect creating a flow, which sucks up them under the arms.

Mats, Brushes, Absorbents, Hydrophobic absorbent booms, etc. are usable in sheltered areas, for limited pollution.
