UNT Dallas College of Law has announced its participation in “Realize the Dream,” a global campaign by the Hon. Martin Luther King III and his family to promote building bridges and fostering understanding through volunteer and service activities. This campaign seeks to achieve 100 million documented hours of volunteer service by January 15, 2029, which would have been Dr. King’s 100th birthday.
Under the leadership and stewardship of Professor Cheryl Wattley, Dean Felecia Epps and UNT Dallas Interim President Warren von Eschenbach, PhD., UNT Dallas is the first law school to join this campaign and will be in the forefront of recruiting other universities,
law schools, attorneys, and professional organizations to also join this campaign. UNT and Paul Quinn College have already joined.
A strategy planning luncheon with Mr. King was held at the college and it was also an opportunity for students, faculty, and administrators from UNTD, Paul Quinn College, and community leaders to receive a history lesson, along with Mr. King’s vision and goals for the program.
According to Atty. and Profesor Wattley, because this is a multi-year project they are interested in identifying community leaders and organizations with a demonstrated commitment to volunteerism.

This week I will begin my series on President Donald Trump’s Executive Orders and what Americans need to know.
To begin, I am going to offer some background information on executive orders. I have never been a fan of any president, no matter the side of the aisle, using executive orders to dance around lawmakers to pass a piece of legislation.
EXECUTIVE ORDERS
Presidents use these orders to create various needed councils or commissions when they arrive in office. Executive orders can also be used to set policies on a wide scale for hiring and purchasing, as needed.
The only way to rescind or amend an executive order is by an act of Congress, a court order, or another executive order, which did happen on Jan. 20 when President Trump re-
scinded 78 of the executive orders Joe Biden had put in place during his time in office.
The rescinded orders ranged from topics as diverse as greenhouse gas emissions, oil drilling on federal land and the cost of prescription medications.
When Trump was inaugurated on Jan. 20, he signed 26 executive orders and two more a few days later, making his total at press time 28.
As a point of reference, during his last term he signed one executive order on his first day in office and 220 during his first administration.
Former President Joe Biden signed nine executive orders on his first day as President, but he did sign an additional 15 executive orders in his first week and 162 executive orders overall during his administration.
Former President Barack Obama signed two executive orders on the first day of this first term and zero on the first day of his second term. In all, Obama signed 276 executive orders during his eight years in office.
For former President George W. Bush, no executive orders were signed on his first day of either of his two terms, but overall, he did end up signing 291 executive orders during his eight years as President.
Trump’s signing of 26 executive orders was more than any previous U.S. president.
TRUMP’S SIGNINGS
While there are many Democrats who are certainly aghast at his busy pen, Trump is definitely keeping his campaign promises to those who voted for him and he began keeping those promises on day one.
I looked at the breakdown of the executive orders for topic relevance and saw he signed six executive orders relating to immigration, three relating to energy and environment, 14 relating to governmental changes, four relating to crime, and one relating to the economy.
Some of the high-profile orders Pres. Trump signed range from pardoning or commuting sentences for almost everyone who was convicted in the Jan.
6, 2021, incident in the U.S. Capitol.
As for the difference between a pardon and a commuted sentence, the latter is a form of clemency to reduce the punishment for a crime.
Trump also paused the TikTok ban on his first day, removed the United States from the World Health Organization and he took a very deep dive into the immigration situation in the United States.
A dive that will certainly impact the future of immigration in this country for years to come.

Much Love, Katrice Hardy!
When it was announced that The Dallas Morning News’ Executive Editor Katrice Hardy was taking another position, there were mixed emotions from people I talked with.
In a little over a month, while still calling Dallas home, she will assume the leadership, CEO position, at The Marshall Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit news organization that “seeks to create and sustain a sense of national urgency about the U.S. criminal justice system.”
I’m appreciative of Katrice’s service during her tenure at The News and look forward to working with her in this new position.
Actually, it’s exciting because The Marshall Project, named after the Hon. Thurgood Marshall, is doing some great work!
Now back in 2021 when the award-winning journalist came to Dallas, to say that Katrice was a breath of fresh air was a definite understatement.
She hit the ground running.
There were times when I got tired just hearing about the grueling schedule she dealt with while running a newsroom during a pandemic, fielding hundreds of invitations and requests monthly, building relationships in communities with valid issues and concerns, and taking care of her family.
And we can not forget self-care!
I told you she was smart, and she knows that she has to take care of herself in order to be of service and aid to others.
At Texas Metro News, together we were giving more of a voice to the voiceless and pooling our collective resources to benefit our communities.
Katrice has the receipts. She has the education, experience, temperament, spirit, ability, and heart.
Now she isn’t for the feint of heart,
fickle, lazy, unethical, excuse-filled, caught up in your feelings, everyone gets a trophy or the why do I have to get up off my butt and work types.
And God forbid those who ask “Why can’t I work from home” when so many are not really working because they lack work ethic!
Sadly, however, we’re dealing with an abundance of the aforementioned. But I digress!
Before her arrival, The News entered into a mutually beneficial relationship with Texas Metro News that focused on content-sharing, training, marketing, and several other areas.
Under the leadership of Publisher Grant Moise, we’ve collaborated on stories, conducted a virtual town hall meeting, trained interns, and even shared or introduced sources for stories, further diversifying coverage.
Katrice came in and wholeheartedly embraced the collaboration, and she didn’t have to-- she actually devoted her time to ensure a successful endeavor that has won praise and a national awarding.
It was easy to embrace her because she is smart, her journalistic skills and ethics are impeccable; she is spiritually grounded, and we share so many bonds that include being members of the National Association of Black Journalists and the International Women’s Forum.
We know that Katrice will be successful at The Marshall Project. She’s a rising star and she is leaving The News in a better place.
Katrice went and took The News places it had never been, she challenged her team and the community, and she showed respect for and interest in the readers.
Thanks, Katrice, may this next chapter in your life be equally rewarding for you and your family!
RESOLVED: QUIT PLAYIN’ History lesson leads to declaration

WHEREAS in the year of our Lord, 1619, the first enslaved Africans were shipped to the English colony of Virginia amidst a brutal and dehumanizing caravan of human trafficking through the Middle Passage called the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, devaluing the lives of approximately 12 and one-half million African natives, and
WHEREAS in 1777, Vermont became the first state to abolish slavery, and after almost a century, the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1863 deemed that slavery was illegal throughout the nation, granting to Congress “the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation,” and WHEREAS in 1857, Justice Roger B. Toney, in his decision to deny the rights of personal freedom and dignity to the plaintiff Dred Scott, further noted, “ They had for more than a century before been regarded as beings of an inferior order and altogether unfit to associate with the white race, either in social or political relations; and so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect; and that the Negro might justly and lawfully be reduced to slavery for his benefit. He was bought and sold and treated as an ordinary article of merchandise and traffic whenever a profit could be made by it, and
WHEREAS by 1877, Jim Crow Laws began to spring up throughout the country, and according to the Jim Crow Museum website, “African Americans were relegated to the status of second-class citizens. Jim Crow represented the legitimization of anti-black racism. Many Christian ministers and theologians taught that white people were the Chosen people, black people were cursed to be servants, and God supported racial segregation,” and
WHEREAS the U.S. Supreme Court issued most of the pertinent laws that sought to “liberate” enslaved Africans with several rulings, which included Plessy v. Ferguson (1896), which said that segregation was unconstitutional, Brown v. Board (1954), saying that the segregation of
public schools violated the 14th Amendment, and Heart of Atlanta Motel Inc. v. United States which outlawed discrimination in public accommodations, and
WHEREAS the 1970s ushered in the concept and creation of Affirmative Action laws which produced opportunities for minorities and women to advance in public and private venues where they work and desire to do business which led to increasing workforce diversity, higher labor participation, innovation, and reducing wage gaps, and the largest economy in the known world, and
WHEREAS since 1980 and the Reagan Era, which unleashed the soft subterfuge of racist ideas and ideals that began in Philadelphia, Mississippi, which has taken a
darker tone under the racially tinged rhetoric of Pat Buchanon, Rush Limbaugh, The Tea Party, which led to Make America Great Again (MAGA 2.0)
WHEREAS on January 20, 2025, the twice elected, multiple-time convicted felon received the oath of office of Commander-in-Chief of what Poet Laureate Maya Angelou called these “yet to be United States of America” and begin immediately to dismember, dismantle and otherwise disable every civil right and benefit won to eradicate 400 years of cruelty, robbery and oppression.
THEREFORE Be It Resolved: Y’all need to Quit Playin!”

I can’t imagine how it felt to my ancestors standing nearly naked, having been stripped of their clothing, culture, identity, and dignity on the slave auction block in that South Carolina market back in the mid-1800s.
They had no voice in their forced participation in this vile and disgusting bidding war to see who would win the right to dehumanize them further.
The image of my forebears enduring this and other harsh indignities is why I will never allow anyone to place a price tag on my integrity and bid on the soul of my consciousness.
That’s why when I see Knee Grows, who I once admired for their strength and cultural loyalty, taking discounts
for the essence of their melanin-coated being, I’m equally saddened and disgusted.
They can rationalize their willingness to participate in the modern-day slave auction ritual and offer flimsy reasoning as to why they opted for mainstream recognition, tolerance over acceptance, and tainted dollars, but as the late pro baseball player Curt Floyd so eloquently opined: “A wellpaid slave is still a slave.”
I will never count anyone else’s pocket change nor judge them for what they do but please don’t straddle the fence or play hide and seek with your ethnicity and allegiance to our culture.
You can’t chase a bag when it’s convenient to your financial bottom line and then raise a fist in the air and proclaim your allegiance when they show you how Black you really are.
My list of disgust and disappointment with people who fit this mold grows lon-
ger each year. In a 2017 video making the rounds on the World Wide Web, Gangsta rapper Snoop Dogg is looking directly into the camera and issuing a direct threat to lambast anyone who dares perform for the current Racist in Chief.
Evidently, he offered a humanity discount and they met his price at the recent inauguration. This was after NBC had paraded him around the summer Olympics clowning for the cameras.
If you saw the video of all those at the inaugural ball who had bid on him, it was obvious they were unamused and uninterested with the product they purchased.
Rapper Nelly tried to feign a commitment to patriotism as he sold his soul, attributing it to his respect for the office.
I would’ve had more respect for him had he performed for actual soldiers than for a man who has often criticized military members.
My heartbreak and disappointment is not just for those who played Stepin’ Fetchit for the President.
I reserve some of the verbal castigation for the misstep of rapper Sexy Redd, whose MLK Day photo of her in an intimate pose with Dr. King was so shameful and inappropriate, it made me wonder what her price tag was. Who around her said this was a good idea and gave it a green light?
I’m a huge Public Enemy fan, but Flavor Flav is competing with Snoop in the clown for white folks category. There are others like Kanye, Stacey Dash, Candace Owens, and even the late Jim Brown, who’ve all operated under the famous quote, “I’m not Black, I’m OJ,” until America gave them their Knee Grow wakeup call.
I just don’t have a price.

Pryor-Anderson to continue revitalization efforts in underserved neighborhoods

Before joining TREC CI, Pryor-Anderson most recently served as principal at Populace Community Strategy, a Tennessee-based consulting firm specializing in creative capital strategy, affordable housing and community engagement for real estate developers, municipalities, and nonprofit organizations.. Previously, she was executive director at the Tennessee Affordable Housing Coalition and director of strategic partnerships and engagement at The Housing Fund, where she helped establish Nashville’s first Community Land Trust (CLT) and deployed capital throughout the historic North Nashville community.
In addition, Pryor-Anderson has held roles as director of multicultur-
al and crisis public relations at VIDA Communications Group, as a realtor for the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and led diverse programming, social innovation, and social entrepreneurship work at Vanderbilt University’s Wond’ry Innovation Center.

Pryor-Anderson earned her master’s degree in secondary Spanish education from Christian Brothers University and dual bachelor’s degrees in Spanish from the University of Tennessee at Martin and journalism and public relations from the University of Memphis. She isa native-fluency Spanish speaker.

DeSoto PD vehicle pursuit leads to arrest
DESOTO – The DeSoto Police responded to a possible robbery near the 1300 block of E. Parkerville Road last Friday. An unknown caller had called 911 reporting an unknown male subject preparing to rob a local convenience store.
The caller said the subject was in the parking lot of the business when he placed a shotgun outside the driver side window and fired one round into the air.
The DeSoto PD Facebook page read, “Police arrived on scene within minutes and located the subject’s vehicle, a 2007 Chevy Suburban, near the gas pumps.”
The subject, Juan Pedro Olivares, a 49-year-old male from Dallas, who was
later arrested, fled the scene entering E. Parkerville Road with police close behind.
During the pursuit Olivares attempted to collide with several police vehicles before surrendering after he entered the City of Cedar Hill.
Olivares was charged with multiple felony grade offenses including Driving While Intoxicated 3rd or More, Unlawful Possession of Firearm by Felon, Evading in a Vehicle and Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant.
The DeSoto PD thanked the Cedar Hill Police Department for assisting during the incident and commended the citizen who reported the incident to police.

Selfish or selfless. Which are you?
Two women in Tyler Perry’s movie, The Family That Preys, were stark examples of serving their families and others to a fault. They overlooked themselves.
Alfre Woodard, one of my favorite actresses, played the
character Alice Evans who runs a modest diner in the movie. Kathy Bates, an equally talented thespian, plays wealthy socialite and corporate executive Charlotte Cartwright -- best friend of Woodard’s character Alice in an odd but genuine, long-term misfit friendship.
Subtle messages about life and how to live it are plentiful in the movie’s plot. In various settings, the two friends state lines that include:
“Life is short, Girl. Life is passing you by.”
“(Seems like) you’ve spent your entire life running this diner.”
“Are you living or are you existing?”
“Letting go brings peace of mind.”
“Enjoy life while you can.”
On a road trip, one friend remarks, “Seems like we’ve got enough pictures to remember a lifetime.” The other friend responds, “I hope so.”
While discussing the possibility of being an outstanding person versus a regular Joe,
Alfre’s character states matter-of-factly, “I’ve been regular all my life.”
Alfre’s character gives this advice to another character: “You cannot live your life on hurts from the past.”
But this message resonated most with me: Save some of yourself for yourself; do not give all of you away to others.
Thus, the movie’s powerful ending song -- I Hope You Dance, a Lee Ann Womack original, covered in the movie by the matchless songstress Gladys Knight – spoke volumes.
If you are selfish, you do not think so much about what others are feeling, thinking, or experiencing.
If you are selfless, you mainly think about the feelings and comfort of others. You put your own comfort and feelings on the back burner or do not allow them in the room at all.
I was just thinking... I wager that each of you can think of someone you know who is selfless – who always is serving others and neglecting
their own self-care.
In that classic advice example, when on an airplane in peril, they put the air mask on their child first out of motherly concern. They react without thinking first of the standard instructions that direct the parent to put the mask on their own face first. That way, the parent survives and remains in control and is able to care for the child throughout the peril. The lesson is that If the mother becomes disabled, there is no one available to care for the child.
Mother Teresa (1910-1997) is a classic example of a selfless caregiver. The late, revered Catholic nun, saint, and Nobel Peace prize winner could lead the pack among selfless do-gooders – no shade intended.
Other individuals come to mind. These include former President Jimmy Carter; nurses who cared for COVID-19 patients during the pandemic; and philanthropist and novelist MacKenzie Scott. Scott co-founded Amazon with her former husband

Back to Perry’s movie The Family That Preys. In it, the self-care theme is strong.
And not to give away the plot -- in case you have not seen the movie -- there is a powerful scene at the end.
Alfre Woodard’s character is reviewing the ups and downs of the lives of her and her mis-matched friend. Alfre declares to a group of acquaintances:
”I have spent my entire life giving it away.” She says as she stares off into the distance. “I think I will keep the rest of it for me.”
Then she utters, in an almost unheard hum, the words
to the songwriters’ ballad, “And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance, I hope you dance. ...I hope you dance.”

Opal Lee, ‘grandmother of Juneteenth,’ has a message for President Donald Trump

Opal Lee did not vote for President Donald Trump, but the 98-year-old civil rights icon says she is ready to work with him.
In an open letter published Monday, Lee noted her successful fight to have Juneteenth recognized as a national holiday. She urged Trump to unite rather than divide the country he now leads.
“I have spent nearly a century working for human dignity and the simple right to enjoy the freedom of being an American,” wrote Lee, who lives in Fort Worth. “Lately, I’ve walked for miles in support of that freedom, not just for one, but for all.
“I’ve found that this promise of freedom is only as
strong as those who choose to uphold it. The question is: will you rise to the occasion or will you stand still as history passes you by?”
In an interview this month with The Dallas Morning News, Lee said she was disappointed by the election results and hopes former Vice President Kamala Harris runs again in four years.
Lee was a vocal supporter of Harris, joining her on the campaign trail and attending the Democratic National Convention last year in Chicago.
“Of course, I was let down because she didn’t win,” Lee said. “I went to her and said, ‘You’ve got to be ready in four years to do this all over again.’ She has to win next time. She can’t give it up.”
Lee said she remains hopeful she will see a woman pres-
ident in her lifetime.
“It’s about time,” she said.
Known as the “grandmother of Juneteenth,” Lee soared to national prominence in recent years. In 2016, Lee made her way from Fort Worth to Washington, D.C., walking 2½ miles in several cities along the way to represent the 2½ years it took for news of the Emancipation Proclamation to reach Galveston.
In 2021, then-President Joe Biden, with Lee at his side, signed into law a bill declaring Juneteenth a national holiday.
Lee said her work is far from over and the nation faces enormous challenges, including poverty, homelessness and inequitable education.
In her letter to Trump, she said she hopes he will pro-
vide an example for the nation.
“Division is the easy choice. Unity is the courageous one. It takes leaders like you to choose that path, even if it’s hard,” Lee wrote. “You have the power to teach us all what is possible when service replaces spectacle and humanity takes center stage. Let your legacy be one that lifts us, not one that weighs us down.
“The road to true freedom is long, but I’ve walked it my whole life,“ she wrote. ”Will you walk with me? Name the time and place, and I’ll meet you there.”

Big Mama Said: Show Me Your Friends, and I Will Tell You Who You Are
One of the most well-known Spanish proverbs says, “Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell you who you are.” Big Mama didn’t speak Spanish, but she understood the message. She often warned, “Baby, if you lay down with dogs, you’ll wake up with fleas.” Your circle reflects your character, your choices, and your values.
In today’s political landscape, this wisdom rings louder than ever. The recent presidential appointments under the current administration, including those with
questionable backgrounds, make us wonder about the company our leaders keep.
When individuals with histories of controversy or bias are elevated to positions of power, it forces us to ask: Do birds of a feather really flock together?
Then there are the pardons. These aren’t just slaps on the wrist; they’re get-out-of-jailfree cards handed to individuals convicted of some of the most egregious acts during the January 6th insurrection. Among them, a man convicted of murder—yes, murder.
Big Mama would call that “throwing stones and hiding your hand,” letting people escape accountability while ignoring the ripple effects on justice and democracy.
And let’s not forget the targeted elimination of sanctuary cities and spaces—places
that offer protection to some of the most vulnerable among us. Big Mama believed in protecting those who couldn’t protect themselves. She’d ask, “What kind of friend stands by and lets harm come to their neighbor?”
When we look at these actions as a collective, the picture becomes clear. The alliances we build and the
people we protect define our priorities and expose our principles. If leadership surrounds itself with chaos, lawlessness, and division, what does that say about who we are as a nation?
Big Mama’s wisdom isn’t limited to the dinner table. It’s a mirror to the values we hold—or fail to hold. So, as we move forward, let’s ask ourselves: Who are our friends, and what do they say about us?
As Big Mama would remind us of the incoming president’s famous line , “Stand back and stand by,” because she knew eventually, the truth always comes to light.

Spirit Airlines bans passengers from flying with offensive tattoos, clothing

Budget carrier Spirit Airlines quietly updated its contract of carriage Wednesday to include a more thorough dress code — which caught at least some unsuspecting travelers unawares.
The new section says that flyers will not be allowed to board or may be removed from an aircraft if they are, “barefoot or inadequately clothed,” and includes a list of examples of what could be deemed inappropriate.
The list includes see-through clothing, being inadequately covered, and exposed breasts, buttocks, or other private parts. It suggests the “no shoes, no shirt, no service” clothing policies often found at restaurants are increasingly being applied on planes, too.
The dress code also includes those, “whose clothing or article, in-
cluding body art, is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature.”
A previous version of Spirit’s contract of carriage, updated in Nov. 2022, simply referenced a person who, “is barefoot or inadequately clothed, or whose clothing is lewd, obscene, or offensive in nature.”
The update comes a week after a passenger told The San Antonio Ex-
press-News he was removed from a Spirit flight to San Antonio for wearing a hoodie emblazoned with a variation of the “F”-word.
Flight attendants reportedly asked him to take it off as it displayed “obscene language,” before removing him from the plane.
Do all carriers have dress codes?
Every airline has a contract of carriage, a legally binding document that flyers agree to abide by while doing business with the airline.
These contracts contain language addressing passenger dress, though some are vague’s and very few travelers actually take the time to read them.
Dalles-based Southwest’s, for example, says it can refuse passengers who are, “Engaging in lewd, obscene, or patently offensive behavior, including wearing clothes that are lewd, obscene, or patently offensive.”
It also contains a provision against
being barefoot.

The vagueness of the language used by many airlines has led to viral incidents similar to last week’s on Spirit.
Dress code infractions have happened to a number of women, wearing everything from athleisure sets to bralettes. It’s prompted critics to decry these codes’ disproportionate effect on women.
Bringing a jacket or an extra T-shirt or clothing item — and complying with flight attendant instructions — can help ensure flyers make it to their destination, without provocative clothing getting in the way.

Talent shines at Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center

It was the 7th annual open model talent call Saturday at the Mark Cuban Heroes Basketball Center, where candidates from all walks of life gathered for a chance to showcase their talents and potentially join the J3 Productions agency, founded by Willie Johnson III.
Since its inception in 2018, J3 Productions has helped launch the careers of many aspiring talents, and Johnson
shared how fulfilling it is to assist in their journey.
“I feel amazing because I’ve helped launch the careers of so many people. They would tell me, ‘Hey, I’m trying to get signed, I’m trying to do this, and the agencies, you know, they aren’t listening, they’re telling me no.’ So it’s been great because I’ve been able to launch careers of several hundred models,” said Willie Johnson III, founder of J3 Productions.
The event allowed participants to perform in front of an audience of judges and
other candidates from diverse backgrounds, all aiming to make their mark in the industry.
One standout performer at the event was 22-year-old Michael Chioma from Nigeria. Despite feeling nervous at times, Chioma embraced the experience with confidence and saw it as a step closer to his dreams.
When asked how he felt
participating in the event, he said, “It was great. Nervous a little bit towards the end, but it was great just pursuing my training.”
Reflecting on his ultimate aspirations, Chioma said, “Modeling, styling, just being a creative in all. New York Fashion Week, Paris Fashion Week—more and more, I’m reaching for the stars. That’s all you can do right now.”

Vogel expands mission with State-of-the-Art Childcare Facility at The Shops at RedBird

Dallas-based nonprofit Vogel has taken a major step in its mission to support children and families overcoming homelessness and poverty with the opening of its new 15,000-square-foot childcare facility at The Shops at RedBird in Southern Dallas County.
The facility, named the Rita Sue and Alan Gold Child and Family Center in honor of the Golds’ long-time support, was unveiled during a ribbon-cutting ceremony this week, where there was also the presentation of a $106,500 donation to the Vogel Foundation by Paul Driscoll, partner and chairman of Hill & Wilkinson; underscoring the organization’s commitment to serving Dallas families.
Vogel President and CEO Karen Hughes, who has been with Vogel for more than 14 years, expressed her excitement about the new center and its significance to the community.
“I’m most excited that it’s stateof-the-art and beautiful,” Hughes said. “We didn’t just make another childcare center—we made it state-of-the-art for the community, from the playground to the inside. It’s beautiful.”
The Rita Sue and Alan Gold Child and Family Center features a stylish exterior with a modern design. A welcoming corridor creates a safe space for children and parents, leading to the educational area.
There is also an outdoor playground and green space to encourage children’s play and development. Additionally, the facility includes a state-of-theart, action-based learning lab where kids can engage in lessons through movement and reinforce them through repetition.

Hughes emphasized the unique nature of their mission: “Homelessness has changed, and the way we address homelessness has changed. But the thing that hasn’t changed is the mission that the children of homeless families are the core of what we do, and it is unique across the country.”
The goal, she said is to break the cycle of child homelessness, ensuring that “a child will not be homeless when they become adults.”
Dallas Mayor Pro Tem Tennell Atkins expressed his support for the facility at Red Bird, saying, “It’s great to have something here for the kids and the future of Dallas. The opportunity for parents to bring their child to this type of facility is something we should have had many years ago, but it’s wonderful to have it in this part of town.”
He also highlighted the
importance of the bond that forms between parents and children at the facility, “It’s a bond where a parent can come and see their baby, where they are creating a connection.”
Atkins explained that the facility’s opening was made possible through a new market tax credit, with Peter Brosky and a partnership that provided free rent at Red Bird Mall to help establish the foundation.
Terrence Maiden, Chief Executive Officer for Russell Glen and partner in the redevelopment project at The Shops at RedBird spoke about the ongoing transformation in the area.
He highlighted the importance of Vogel’s involvement, “This is a great event, you know, to have Vogel here.”
Maiden emphasized the role of quality services in the community, recognizing the impact of Vogel’s presence.
“This community is in need of quality out here, and thinking about the workforce that’s located here in southern Dallas and the Redbird area. Having an asset like Vogel here is going to go a long way.”
A father, Maiden understands the personal importance of a safe
environment for children.
He shared, “When you think about having a place that’s safe and welcoming as a parent who’s working... It helps alleviate a lot of stress, especially if you work here. You can walk right downstairs and check on your child. I think that’s a huge benefit for people that have been working here.”
The director of the Vogel Redbird facility, Tamyra Belo, has witnessed the positive impact on families firsthand. Currently, the center serves nine children, with parents facing various challenges like job-seeking and housing transitions.
“Parents are enjoying what’s going on here; the community is very welcoming,”said Belo, adding that the facility provides a safe space for children,while also giving parents peace of mind.
Her leadership has fostered a supportive environment where staff feels valued and heard. She leads by example, with a focus on empathy, and encourages staff to share their own experiences in their roles.
As a mother, she said she feels deeply responsible for the wellbeing of the children, treating them as her own.
Belo also emphasized the importance of community, “To have the parents come in and intermingle and be involved with parent engagement, to blend in and socialize with one another based on who they are.”
The opening of the Rita Sue and Alan Gold Child and Family Center marks a significant milestone for Vogel in its ongoing mission to support families in need.
As the community continues to grow, Vogel remains committed to breaking the cycle of homelessness and creating brighter futures for children and families across Dallas and beyond.

TikTok ban serious overstep by US

While not all readers might be into social media apps, and double true for TikTok because it is (narrative inserted here) “owned by China” I want to clear up this China rumor that mainstream media has pounded into the heads of many Americans. Fortunately, two attorneys spoke to the Supreme Court last week on behalf of TikTok/ByteDance and the plaintiffs opposing the TikTok ban and cleared this misinformation up for SCOTUS.
The ban was set for January 19, 2025.
Just one day before the inauguration.
I know I have heard the “China” narrative ad nauseam, to the point I stopped trying to explain.
However, the above-mentioned attorneys gave an elementary explanation in their press conference about how ridiculous the ban is, so read below and be your own judge if you think TikTok is “owned” by China.
After that, decide if you think it is a clever idea for the US government to determine it is okay to take away any form of free speech in this country.
Americans hired these “politicians,” not to babysit, but to do the job they were voted into office to do. That was NOT to take away America’s free speech.
We tell the government how to run the show based on the Constitution, they do not tell us. Yet somehow, Americans have become prisoners by their own employees (i.e., Senate and the House) and these
three-letter agencies no longer do their job implementing laws, instead making laws up that sometimes work against the people.
If Americans are old enough to work, pay taxes, go to war, and be killed for this country, then said Americans should be able to say what they want without censorship.
And this is a bipartisan issue so you cannot swing left or right for the blame on this one. There were votes on both sides of the aisle to push this agenda through.
The nerve of these politicians to take our freedom of speech away because people are uncovering the truth and lies. Effectively the gig is up and the lobbyists and politicians know it.
Maybe through TikTok, maybe through research or other social media platforms or even alternative news sources, we have discovered what the government has been up to while Americans were sleeping; US patents manipulating weather or projects like MK Ultra https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/ what-we-know-about-ciasmidcentury-mind-controlproject-180962836/ or Project Paperclip https://www.historynewsnetwork.org/article/ the-horrible-secrets-of-operation-paperclip-an-int - it is not pretty what Americans have been discovering and speaking out about. To that end many believe that is why the government sees this free speech platform as a threat.
Okay fine, you don’t like TikTok, but do you like your free speech?
It has been reported TikTok has contributed over $32B to the US economy while supporting 5M small businesses and 2M creators. One TikTok
business owner said it will cost Americans $1.3B in the first month if the app is banned and it supports over 200,000 jobs.
Overall, the reason TikTok is being challenged is supposedly “National Security.”
If National Security is at such risk why are other apps like Temu still allowed?
Who are these people in Washington D.C. who think they have a right to destroy the Constitution while they sit on top of their “ban” wagon.
In the press conference after the SCOTUS appearance last week attorney Noel Francisco spoke representing TikTok Incorporated and parent company ByteDance Limited.
He said, “The justices are extremely engaged and they fully understand the importance of this case not only for the American citizens but for first amendment law and the rights for everybody.”
He pointed out TikTok is a US company and is incorporated in the State of California with thousands of employees based in the United States.
Francisco said, “The government does not dispute it is a Bonafide subsidiary operated in the United States in accordance with all applicable American corporate law.”
He also pointed out ByteDance Limited is a private holding company registered in the Cayman Islands and is not owned by China and “no arm of the Chinese government has an arm directly or indirectly in TikTok Incorporated or ByteDance,” he explained.
He said, “ByteDance is 58% owned by global institutional investors including very large American institutional investors, it is 21% owned by its employees, many who are Americans in the United States and
it is 21% owned by one of its founders who is a Chinese national living in Singapore.”
TikTok Incorporated, he said, “Exercises independent judgement with respect to the algorithm in the United States. The code for the algorithm is brought into the United States and stored on servers located in Virginia.
“There it is converted into executable code that is modified, customized, and trained pursuant to moderation policies and implemented in the United States. So, when TikTok Incorporated implements the recommendation in the United States that is very much TikTok Incorporated speech and the speech of a US entity speaking in the United States.”
Francisco also pointed out the intellectual property is not owned by the Chinese government. It is owned by ByteDance Limited, which is a global entity and a company incorporated in the Cayman Islands and has subsidiaries throughout the world.
“The US government concedes that it has no evidence that China has ever attempted to date to control the US TikTok platform,” Francisco stressed. “It concedes that China has not attempted to censor content on the platform, it concedes that China has not attempted to misappropriate user data in the United States.”
All who can see clearly can see this ban puts America’s first amendment rights at stake.

such an important speech platform because, as the government effectively concedes its brief, it is afraid the content that could come out on that platform might be dangerous. We do not normally think of speech as dangerous and the Supreme Court said speech is not dangerous and you do not shut down a speech platform because you are worried about speech being dangerous, that the whole point of the first amendment. That we engage ideas with ideas and we let truth come out and that the fundamental problem with this act, it does not reflect trust the first amendment places in the American people.”
Attorney Jeff Fisher who represents the TikTok creators the case summed it up, “The government has never threatened to shut down speech a platform because of the ideas being expressed.”
Another person pointed out TikTok is part of a Trust, which means a US ban is a violation 18 USC 241-242 in that “Americans and the remain20% is owned by the company’s founder who is a private individual and not part of state or government entity.”
Someone pointed out the TikTok CEO Shou Xi Chew got start as an intern at Facebook and the Zucky just canstand Chew’s app is doing better that his Meta mess. I not know about that, but I know Zucky seemed to have rolled over to tell members congress all about how “people from the Biden administration would call up team” and basically ask Meta to censor Covid content.
Zuckerberg said the emails published highlighting the bullying, and now he is trying
to play good cop way too late in the game as he sings a different tune about “working with President Trump to push back on governments around the world going after American companies and pushing to censor more.”
Most TikTok folks are not going back to Meta, they are going to Red Note (and that one is owned by China).
Another question is why is the government banning TikTok over “spy concerns’ yet drones that are still not been identified are daily being seen all over the US (Dallas now included) and the government is not the least bit interested in figuring out that national security issue.
Another scratch my head moment, they want to ban TikTok over national security but the government has allowed as of 2024 Chinese investors/businesses to buy 383,935 acres in the US.
The government does not want Americans talking because we realize we have more in common than not and we might start pointing the finger at the politicians who have gained revenue at the cost of American dissension.
One final thought, according to Newsweek, there are eight countries in the world with some form of ban on TikTok in place that includes Afghanistan, and Iran.
How many of you are comfortable waking up on January 20 and being on the short list of countries with these two I just named, since we know the governments in those countries do not allow free speech?

Staying healthy all season long: Tips for combatting respiratory viruses
DALLAS – Winter roared this month, bringing along snow, cold weather and a higher likelihood of catching a respiratory virus. Whether it’s a common cold, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) or the flu, there are plenty of germs floating around. However, there are steps you can take to keep yourself and your loved ones healthy all season long.
“Flu season doesn’t really peak until the middle of February, and we don’t typically see a decline in cases until March, so there are still several months of flu season ahead of us. However, the flu shot is close to 90% effective and the best way to stay healthy and avoid severe illness or hospitalization this year,” said Joseph Chang, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Parkland Health.
With flu season carrying well into spring, there is still time to get vaccinated, as Texas often sees the highest volume of flu activity in February, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The flu vaccine is recommended annually for anyone 6 months and older, including pregnant women.
“The flu isn’t just a common cold; often, it can cause serious complications, including pneumonia, asthma attacks and even death,” said Cesar Termulo, MD, Associate Medical Director for Parkland’s network of Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) health centers. “Young children are especially at risk for severe illness, including high fevers that can trigger seizures. Last year, over 200 children died from the flu, so it’s more than just a runny nose and cough.”

Along with getting vaccinated, there are plenty of other precautions you can take to stay well this winter. “The biggest thing you can do to stay healthy is to get your flu shot, but it’s also important to make sure you’re staying hydrated, eating good nutrition, avoiding large gatherings and people who are sick, and of course practicing consistent handwashing,” Dr. Termulo said.
For protection against severe RSV, vaccines are available to adults 60 and older, as well as pregnant women between 3236 weeks gestation to protect their infants after birth. Additionally, infants born to mothers who did not receive a maternal RSV vaccine are eligible for a monoclonal antibody injection that protects against the virus.

South Carolina, Staley Ink Historic Contract Extension
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The University of South Carolina Board of Trustees approved today a contract extension for women’s basketball head coach Dawn Staley that will go through the 2029-30 season and make her the highest paid college women’s basketball coach in the history of the sport.
“Dawn Staley is a once-in-a-generation coach who has made a tremendous impact on the University of South Carolina,” said Athletics Director Jeremiah Donati. “She has elevated the sport of women’s basketball on the national level and here on campus and I am excited that she will be representing our University for many years to come.”
The contract, which began immediately following Board approval, starts with an annual salary of $4 million, includes a $500,00 signing bonus and an annual $250,000 escalator, making the total value approximately $25.25 million.
“I’m proud to represent the University of South Carolina and of its investment in women’s basketball,” Staley said. “What we’ve been able to accomplish on the court is a testament to what can happen when you bring together the right people from a team perspective but also have the right commitment from the University, the Athletics Department and the community to providing that team with everything it needs to be successful. I appreciate every person who has been part of our journey –player, staff member, University President and leadership, Board of Trustee member, athletics director, athletics department employee and fan. I look forward to continuing to be an example of how an investment in women’s basketball is one that will pay off for everyone.”
Since taking the reins of the
program in May 2008, Staley has made South Carolina into a perennial national power.
The Gamecocks are one of five programs to have at least three NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championships, and they are one of two programs to have put together multiple 40-game win streaks. Staley has led South Carolina to six of the last nine NCAA Final Fours, including each of the last four. Their current 107 consecutive weeks in the top 10 of the AP Poll is the longest active streak and the 11th longest streak in the history of that poll. The Gamecocks’ 86 AP No. 1 rankings, all coming under Staley, are the third-most by a program in that poll’s history as well.
Staley’s teams have been the benchmark in the SEC over the last decade, amassing eight regular-season titles since 2013-14 and finishing no lower than second in that time. Since that season, the Gamecocks have a 165-15 record in league action, including an 81-3 mark since 2019-20. South Carolina’s current 52-game SEC regular-season win streak is the league record and is the seventhx longest conference win streak in NCAA history. Earlier this season, Staley became the second-fastest coach to reach
200 SEC regular-season victories, and her .787 SEC winning percentage (203-55) is second only to the legendary Pat Summitt. In Staley’s tenure, the Gamecocks have also had a lock on the SEC Tournament, winning eight titles since claiming their first in 2015. They became the first program in league history to win four consecutive tournaments, claiming the crowns 2015-18. Under Staley’s tutelage, 11 Gamecocks have amassed 27 All-America honors, including two National Players of the Year in A’ja Wilson (2018) and Aliyah Boston (2022), who also became the program’s first National Defensive Player of the Year, CoSIDA Academic All-America Teammate of the Year and Honda Cup Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Three Gamecocks have earned SEC Player of the Year honors a combined seven times, and 22 have picked up All-SEC honors at least once, including 16 firstteam selections.
After a Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame career as a player, which included five WNBA All-Star appearances and three Olympic gold medals, Staley has proven she can prepare young talent for the next level. She has seen 14 Gamecocks taken in the WNBA Draft in
the last nine seasons, including a pair of No. 1 overall picks in Wilson (2018) and Boston (2022). Three of those 14 picks earned WNBA Rookie of the Year honors and three others made their WNBA All-Rookie Teams.
Staley is a five-time National Coach of the Year. Her 2020 unanimous selection made her the first former Naismith Player of the Year to earn the Naismith Coach of the Year award, and she became the first men’s or women’s coach to claim the award in three straight seasons 2022-24. She is a seven-time SEC Coach of the Year, narrowly trailing Summitt’s SEC-record eight selections.
Off the court, Staley has made South Carolina women’s basketball a community event with Gamecock fans leading the NCAA in average attendance for the last 10 seasons. The program sold out of season tickets for the first time in program history with 13,152 sold this season, putting the Gamecocks in line for an historic 11th-consecutive season atop the national attendance rankings.
Also a force in USA Basketball, Staley was named head coach of the U.S. Women’s National Team in May 2017 and led the team to its record-tying seventh-straight Olympic gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Games. She was on the sideline as a head or assistant coach or on the court as a player for six of those seven gold medals. As a head coach, Staley has been named USA Basketball National Coach of the Year twice (2018, 2015) and helped the U.S. to 11 international gold medals. For her contributions to international basketball, Staley will be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2025.
