Dear Member, I hope you have all had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year and are all geared up for a busy and exciting 2014! As an Association, we are preparing for the Government response to Keogh, ready to hit the ground running when they publish. We anticipate lots of work on Standards, Education and revalidation for nurses in Independent Practice. Our Strategic Plan for the next three years will be our most detailed and constructive yet, it will not be published until the Spring because we need to know how the Government is responding to Keogh and we will also be informed by our membership survey. We have recently completed the survey. Cosmetic Nurses cannot afford to be complacent at this point and we are grateful for the support of members to maintain a strong position at the political table going forward. A big thank you to all those members who have completed the survey – You can view the results here. NMC Revalidation On the 6th January, until July 2014 the NMC will be conducting a public consultation on revalidation. You may engage in the consultation by completing an online survey. http://www.nmc-uk.org/Nurses-and-midwives/Revalidation/ Of course the BACN as an organisation will be engaging with the process to ensure that the challenges faced by nurses in aesthetics will be addressed so that our route to revalidation is as clear and smooth as for our NHS peers. Flash Survey 'Teen Tox' The recent Mail on Sunday article about nurses and doctors treating a 17 year old has caused some controversy. We are interested in your response and will agree BACN guidelines based on our survey.

CRC Press now offer a 20% discount for BACN members on ALL publications on their website.

Facebook versus Forum We know some members miss the sense of connection that Facebook provided and recognise the forum isn’t as cuddly, but for BACN as a professional organisation Facebook was only ever intended as a temporary solution as we awaited the launch of our website. Facebook is clearly a social network and not appropriate for professional debate and discussion. Whilst members may choose to engage with each other via Facebook, there are no plans for the BACN to act as host to a Facebook group again. Unlike Facebook, the website forum will retain threads for referenceon Facebook they were lost and repeated again and again. On the forum, we have a record of the numbers who have viewed a post even when no one replies and over time a useful resource will develop. Like Facebook, you are able to gain instant access by clicking ‘remember me’ and saving on your computer, tablet, or phone, as a favourite and you can also receive email notifications of posts. We too miss the friendly, informal banter we had on Facebook, what we do not miss is the bullying or the abuses or the constant firefighting moderators had to undertake on a daily basis, all of which reflected badly on our group as whole, spoiled by a small minority. We call upon you to continue to support the Forum and are optimistic it will become the informative and supportive resource we all need and expect.

AGM Our annual accounts and Treasurers report have been posted on the website for the year 2012/13. Our membership peaked in 2012 at 600. Now the website is up and running we are able to closely monitor and audit membership lapses and renewals and will be in a position to report in more detail next year. Membership currently stands at 497, we await the results of the membership survey to help guide us in measures we might take to constructively grow membership and this will form part of our strategic plan. Liz Bardolph stepped down as President in October, having served a four year term, we wish to nominate her as an honorary member in recognition of her work and support. We are currently considering the qualities and experience that would best serve our work and are compiling a list of suitable candidates we can approach. We are unlikely to appoint a President until we achieve Charitable Status for our public facing services which we are considering as part of our strategic plan. We have three vacancies on the Board. Julie Brackenbury has bravely volunteered to take a position. As per our constitution, Julie will begin a probationary period of 3 months, to give her a better insight into the role, before formally committing. We are grateful to Julie for stepping up and all the Board look forward to working with her. We welcome any further nominations and are exploring the option to open board positions to non-members with expertise of use to us, such as financial, legal, political etc. In May 2013 we introduced the option to pay the annual membership subscription in monthly instalments. Unfortunately, there have been a significant number of failed payments for various reasons and this has proved to put an untenable administrative burden on Kris, chasing and monitoring debt. For this reason, sadly, we will henceforward no longer be providing this payment option to new or renewing members. Those members who are reliably paying monthly will not be affected. If you are having problems with payments or have received notifications from us, please do get in touch to resolve. We have received no agenda items from membership, there remains a deficit of board members and we continue to await the Government on Keogh and our membership survey, our strategic plan cannot be published yet; I suggest there is no vote for the time being. The Board members who have completed a four year term and are willing to continue for a second term will do so if there are no objections. When we have completed our strategic plan, we will propose further agenda items and formally elect any new board members.

Sponsored Regional Workshops The following workshops are currently being offered: Skin Rejuvenation and Scar Repair – Skin-needling treatments and new electrical medical devices Company: Aestheticare/Ferndale Pharmaceuticals Micro-medical skin-needling involves the production of thousands of controlled micro-medical skin-needle columns in the dermis, whilst leaving the epidermis intact. This stimulates a wound healing repair and regeneration mechanism that results in dermal regeneration, normalised collagen formation and increased angiogenesis. The effectiveness and excellent safety profile of the treatments have resulted in the technique rapidly becoming established in Europe and Asia as a front-line medical aesthetic treatment for acne scars, texture, tone, line, wrinkle and laxity improvement in ageing and photodamaged skin, and stretch marks. We will discuss the development of micro-medical skin-needling and its mechanism of action, and review micromedical skin-needling’s therapeutic role in the treatment of acne scars, ageing skin and stretch marks, including evidence-based protocols and outcomes. We will then review the latest developments in skin-needling, including the introduction of a new electronic microneedling system for skin rejuvenation and scar repair, and the increased level of intensity, control and comfort that it provides. Regenlite - Effective Acne, Skin Rejuvenation and Vascular treatments. Company: Chromogenix. Regenlite is a medical laser using SmartPulse ™ technology. Regenlite has been engineered to supply exactly the right amount of light energy to the vessels at exactly the right time, taking them to the brink of damage and maximising collagen stimulation without causing long-term impairment. The laser offers swift and effective treatments with no need for cooling or anaesthesia and little or no visible after-effects, allowing the patient to resume their normal routine quickly. The effectiveness of the Regenlite treatment has been evaluated using biochemical analysis, electron microscopy histology, ultrasound imaging and clinical studies and has been described in Lancet publications in TGFβ research papers. i-LipoXcell The Most Advanced Fat Reduction and Body Shaping System. Company: Chromogenex i-Lipoxcell incorporates four technologies for intelligent body fat analysis and measurement, dual wave length laser diode, IR Vacuum massage and Multi-polar Radio Frequency. i-Lipoxcell incorporates both visible red and Infra-red laser for bio-stimulation of metabolic pathways resulting in the release of fatty acids and glycerol, shrinking fat cells. Results are seen immediately. Treatment is safe and comfortable and can target specific stubborn pockets of fat as well as reshaping the body.
