Dear Member,    

Conference 2013 Liz Bardolph Steps Down as President Coventry Website

This year’s conference was held in Manchester at The Renaissance Hotel, and we are pleased to say the feedback was overwhelmingly positive! Attendance The best yet with 180 members from all over the country and 10 non-members; 26 sponsors and 15 speakers, 9 of whom were nurses (yeah!). 257 bodies in total, so a worthy crowd. Venue The Renaissance Hotel was the best venue ever! It was great to all be in the same place throughout, the facilities were of a high standard, the customer service was faultless - all helping to make us feel welcome and comfortable and pretty relaxed. Programme This year’s programme was designed to take on board feedback from last year and requests for topics from membership over the last 12 months. More nurse speakers, more practical, more on complications and a second chance to hear Kate Hill and Lance Setterfield. It was great to give a platform for nurses comfortable on the podium and to encourage new faces to have a go. We didn’t quite get what we asked for from some of the presentations (this, we are told by other event organisers, is always a problem) Never the less, the content was all valuable CPD and the quality of speakers was good throughout. Stand out highlights for me were: Andrew Rankin and his video demonstration of hyalase in action (self injected test doses on his own arm- above and beyond or what??) But, this, more than any other lecture on how HA’s are broken down will stay in my mind! The NMC presentation to us on revalidation. This was a real milestone, as we have been trying to get the NMC to engage with us for years. Yasmin Becker conducted herself admirably and answered challenging questions posed by audience members without batting an eyelid. She also stayed on to speak on a one to one basis with members and told me she was leaving with a positive impression of us and welcomed further engagement with BACN. Hooray! The take home points were: This process will be gradual, portfolios will be submitted on-line and augmented with

appraisal and 360 degree feedback in line with GMC revalidation. They assure us that they recognise the challenges for self-employed nurses and will consult further with us to ensure no disadvantage. We will keep you all posted on any progress made. As individuals you are welcome to participate in the consultation - keep an eye on the NMC website for details and opportunities. Suzanne Armstrong ended the programme with an outstanding presentation on Psychological Impact of the treatments we provide, the peer reviewed evidence base was all there, but the videoed interview with a patient was extraordinarily moving and a wonderful reminder that what we do is far from trivial. Entertainment Always popular! 256 seated for dinner and ‘Born to be Blondie’. Leslie Dean can always be relied upon to go the extra mile - she dressed up in glam style with a fabulous blonde wig and rocked the dance floor! The Blondie Tribute exceeded our expectations and the floor was given a good pounding, one ‘can’t sit down to this one’ after another!

Regrets, we have a few….. Should have had finger food for lunch, you all wanted seating and that just ain’t possible and you would not have been able to tear yourselves away from friends and chat to visit our all-important sponsors! We had a session for ‘BACN Matters’ at the end of the day, albeit earlier than previous years. Many still left to catch the shops or catch the trains, plus we were all running out of Oomph. This was such a shame because we had some big thank you’s to say and a very big good-bye, both of which we needed to share with all. We are also quite sure we would have had a livelier discussion on a variety of topics had everyone not been so tired and ready for home.

Thank you… As we have done in previous years, we wished to present some ‘awards’ for outstanding contributions. Most of the intended recipients had already left or had not been able to attend. Never mind, they will be receiving a little something for the mantelpiece. Suzanne Armstrong and Michelle Irving For leading and driving the Competency working group. Probably our biggest achievement this year and would not have happened had we not had the constant crack of the whip and relentless deadlines to meet. Alice Danker Who has proved to be an outstanding and dedicated leader of the Yorks and Humberside group. Leslie Dean and Lisa Neimier (sharing) For always going above and beyond in supporting and motivating the members of The South West Region who have grown close under their leadership. Gill Hunt Probably our last Facebook award, but this one for making us laugh out loud on more than one occasion. Call it a BACN Comedienne of the Year award! Thanks for the laughs Gill. Big Thank yous to Kris and Liz, our super administrators who become Event Managers for a good 3 months of the year and do a mind blowing amount of work to organise the venue, speakers, delegates and sponsors and ensure it all runs smoothly on the day. Awesome team! Also must acknowledge the contribution from board members who have helped in designing the programme, chasing down speakers and sponsors etc. All about Team Work. This year you will have noticed the Conference ‘Here to help Team’ were wearing super Pink T-Shirts. Kris and Liz were assisted on the day by Cleo, Angela and Danny. The back-up team were charged with managing the mics at Q and A. Oh Boy, it was like that hammer the gofer game. Please keep your hands in the air until eye contact is made, if you want a word in edgeways, we really struggled to spot you and allow new voices to be heard. 2014 Go for it! The pink T-shirts will be back, and ready for you!

Liz Bardolph our President steps down. Liz has for over 10 years served first on The RCN Forum Committee and then on the BACN Board as President, all whilst undertaking a number of challenging courses: Mentoring at Greenwich, Expert Witness with Bond Solon (one of a very few nurses to undertake this qualification), the V300, Life Coaching and as if that weren’t enough, she is now doing a Masters in Medical Law and Ethics! She has sat on numerous Committees, including TYCT in the early days representing The RCN, and more recently, The British Academy of Cosmetic Practice. As President of The BACN she was instrumental in proposing and organising The BACN Bursary awards for nurses undertaking the V300, we were able to ring fence £10,000 and assist 15 members to pay for their course. She also participated in the Competencies Working Group back in 2005 and again in 2013.

Having served her four year term with BACN she quite rightly wishes to focus on her clinical work, her Masters and her work as an expert Witness. We will be nominating Liz for Honorary Membership which she richly deserves having been a supremely professional and highly respected ambassador for Nurses in Aesthetics all these years and no doubt for years to come! Liz has assured us she will continue to support the BACN and be an active member. We expect loads of Legal and professional advice Liz! The position of President will remain empty whilst we consider the qualities and responsibilities required of the person needed to succeed Liz and meet the challenges of the next four years. It is worth noting that myself, Sharon Bennett, Lou Sommereux and Sharron Brown have also served four years and there will be a membership vote to determine whether or not you want us for a second term.

Also, we hope new blood will come forward for board positions that remain vacant, please contact admin@cosmeticnurses.org for more information if you are interested in joining the board. We are in the process of preparing our Strategic plan for 2014 in preparation for this year’s on-line AGM.

Position Statement Re: Coventry University Foundation in Aesthetic Practice Diploma It appears some confusion has arisen and rumors are circulating regarding the exact nature of the relationship between the BACN and Coventry University in the development and delivery of the Foundation in Aesthetic Practice Diploma and the subsequent withdrawal of the BACN members from involvement. This statement is intended to clarify the situation for those BACN members who have enrolled on the above course as to the extent and nature of BACN’s involvement in and subsequent withdrawal from this course. Coventry University sought the assistance and guidance of the BACN in setting up an accredited course for recognized professionals working within the Aesthetic Specialty. The role of the BACN was to assist the University to define the scope and develop the contents of the module, providing guidance and expertise in these matters. With this purpose a working group was established consisting of BACN members Emma Davies, Lou Sommereux, Annie Cartwright and Rosie Cooper who had established the initial link with the University, based on her positive experience of studying at Coventry. Assistance with marketing the course (advertising) was requested by the University and the BACN agreed to publicize the course to its members. During the module development the subject of admission criteria was raised and BACN members of the working group strongly objected to the idea that the course may be open access. It was clearly stated at the time that it would only be acceptable to the BACN working party that recognized professionals, namely nurses, doctors and dentists would be admitted on to the course. The working group received documentation (MIDS) for both proposed modules that detailed the structure and admission criteria for the course via email. These were draft documents and no final version was ever received. Part of the opening paragraph of both documents stated:

“Aesthetics is a distinct and specialized area of practice for medical professionals that build on the core principles, standards and competencies associated with registered health professionals in the UK. “ At the final faculty meeting and still with only draft versions of the MIDs, it was announced that the University Board had decided the course would be open access, this position was non-negotiable, and that beauty therapists and paramedics had enrolled. The following points were made on behalf of BACN by the working party in this meeting to the entire faculty:

The meeting became extremely tense and every attempt at further discussion was shut down. Under the circumstances Emma Davies and Lou Sommereux decided they could no longer continue as the situation would compromise the reputation and credibility of the BACN but still offered to discuss this further and still teach their allocated sessions. They were requested to leave all documentation behind and left the meeting. Rosie Cooper and Annie Cartwright were then asked for their views. Following a brief discussion Annie Cartwright also left the meeting, leaving documentation issued by the University relating to the course behind. The following day the University announced via email that they had changed the open access policy to restricted access (Well done BACN Nurses!) and those who had left the meeting were informed that their teaching slots had been reallocated. Members of the BACN working party felt they were put in an untenable situation and with regret felt that withdrawing from the course to be the only option in view of being told at the faculty meeting that the open access policy was ”non-negotiable”. BACN Members enrolling that day made their position clear to The University and access has subsequently been restricted. The BACN remains supportive of initiatives to develop formal courses and qualifications for suitable qualified health professionals and in that spirit, we wish Coventry and those nurses enrolled, success in establishing what should prove to be a credible qualification of knowledge and experience.

Sponsored Regional Workshops The following workshops are currently being offered:

Skin Rejuvenation and Scar Repair – Skin-needling treatments and new electrical medical devices Company: Aestheticare/Ferndale Pharmaceuticals

Micro-medical skin-needling involves the production of thousands of controlled micro-medical skin-needle columns in the dermis, whilst leaving the epidermis intact. This stimulates a wound healing repair and regeneration mechanism that results in dermal regeneration, normalised collagen formation and increased angiogenesis. The effectiveness and excellent safety profile of the treatments have resulted in the technique rapidly becoming established in Europe and Asia as a front-line medical aesthetic treatment for acne scars, texture, tone, line, wrinkle and laxity improvement in ageing and photodamaged skin, and stretch marks. We will discuss the development of micro-medical skin-needling and its mechanism of action, and review micromedical skin-needling’s therapeutic role in the treatment of acne scars, ageing skin and stretch marks, including evidence-based protocols and outcomes. We will then review the latest developments in skin-needling, including the introduction of a new electronic microneedling system for skin rejuvenation and scar repair, and the increased level of intensity, control and comfort that it provides.

Website The Website, in all its bright and shiny glory is now LIVE! Hooray! Click the ‘remember me’ box for easy, speedy login and have a good explore. Check out News, Forum, ‘My Region’ and Resources, lots of new stuff! We say goodbye to BACN Facebook which has been a temporary measure whilst waiting for the website forum. Rather like a compelling soap, we have loved it and loathed it, now it’s time to keep the professional discussions on the forum which will be searchable for important threads- the main failing of Facebook. This new forum offers lots of great features. You can subscribe to email notifications and we will be moderating here (not Facebook) from now on. Have a play with it to get the hang of all the functions, this will have credibility as a professional peer group for CPD, which Facebook, sadly, does not, so onwards and upwards…. There will be a spate of important Newsflashes to come, be sure to catch them.

Kind Regards,

Emma Davies BACN Chair
