Editor´s letter Fear of the unknown

THE POLITICAL METEOROLOGISTS ARE predicting a storm at the end of the summer. The peaceful social movements that took to the streets in May have not taken any holidays. Neither has the government nor the opposition. The climate of tension that is being chewed over is nothing like the sluggish diplomacy of previous summers. There are no official openings, nor photos on the beaches, no smiles or peaceful holidays. The Partido Popular (conservative party) and the Socialist Party are sharpening their weapons while they accept that the winner of the next elections will be left with the worst bit: an indignant social mass that seems to have awakened from an eternal dream.

Nobody knows what animated the fierce and spontaneous indignation, but their hunger doesn’t look as if it will be satisfied with crumbs. Either for the hardening of their ideologies, or for getting closer to the feelings on the street, the two large political formations in the country have started to take this collective slap on the wrist very seriously. The think tanks working for them are facing up to the unknown, a challenge in political marketing and communications without precedent. The manuals of public relations make no mention of how to deal with a crowd of dissonant voices.

Political timing is pressing. It is a case of all or nothing in which nobody knows the future, neither inside nor outside their parties. The wind of change is blowing while the time of Prime Minister Zapatero fades away (see page. 46), but nobody knows the direction of the wind. In a short space of time we have witnessed scandals, resignations, baton changes… a level of summer political activity to which few of us have been accustomed. Faced with the fear that the shadow of the protests will go on too long, the parties are starting the new test with a hand raised out above the balcony. Checking to see if the first drops are starting to fall.

El gobierno, la oposición; tampoco ellos. El clima de tensión que se masca en el ambiente no recuerda en nada a la perezosa diplomacia de veranos anteriores; no hay inauguraciones, ni hay fotos en las playas; no hay sonrisas ni pacíficas vacaciones. El Partido Popular y el Partido Socialista afilan sus armas mientras asumen que al ganador de las próximas elecciones le tocará bailar con la más fea: una masa social indignada que parece haber despertado de un sueño eterno.

Nadie sabe quién reanimó a la voraz y espontánea voz de la indignación, pero su hambre no parece saciarse con migajas.

Bien por endurecimiento de su ideología, bien por acercamiento al sentir de las calles, las dos grandes formaciones políticas del país han comenzado a tomarse muy en serio este tirón de orejas colectivo. Los thinktanks a su servicio se enfrentan a lo desconocido, un reto de marketing y comunicación política sin precedentes: en los manuales de relaciones públicas no se menciona cómo tratar a una muchedumbre de voces disonantes.

El timing político apremia. Es un todo o nada en el que nadie conoce el futuro, ni dentro ni fuera de su partido. Soplan aires de cambios mientras el tiempo del Presidente Zapatero se marchita (ver p. 46), pero se desconoce la dirección del viento.

En un corto espacio de tiempo hemos presenciado escándalos, dimisiones, cambios de batuta… una actividad política estival a la que pocos estábamos acostumbrados. Ante el temor de que la sombra de las protestas sea demasiado alargada, los partidos comienzan este nuevo ejercicio con una mano asomada al balcón. Sólo por si empiezan a caer las primeras gotas.

Each edition of Babylon has its own internal mythology. Nobody looks for it, it’s not invented by any editor, it’s simply there and appears

later. Our last technological cover of a child dressed as a little bird for Twitter symbolized illusion for the future, the initial impulse of life.

On the other hand, with the issue you now have in your hands the story has changed considerably. If it were to have a soundtrack, from the cover of this issue you would be hearing in the background a ballad by Johnny Cash.

Al final, parece que hacerse mayor resulta inevitable. Acabamos de cumplir 18 números, la mayoría de edad en la mayor parte del planeta, pero no sabemos si en el reino de las publicaciones impresas las edades funcionan, quizás, de otro modo. Cada edición de Babylon posee su propia mitología interna.

Nadie la busca, no la inventa ningún redactor, simplemente está ahí

y aparece después. En nuestra tecnológica portada anterior un niño disfrazado del pajarito de Twitter simbolizaba la ilusión por el futuro, el impulso inicial de la vida y, por el contrario, en el número que tienes ahora en tus manos el cuento ha cambiado bastante. Si tuviese banda sonora, en la cubierta de este número se escucharía de fondo una balada de Johnny Cash.

Babylon and the IMPULSA Generation ON 22 JUNE THE BABYLON Magazine team was invited by the Fundación Príncipe de Girona foundation to take part in the IMPULSA Forum 2011 held at the auditorium in the city of Girona. It’s an initiative that for two years has been connecting professionals with experience in dealing with restless youth, aimed at converting their emerging talent into real life projects. Presided over by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Asturias, the Forum attracted young entrepreneurs like Pau GarcíMilá (eyeOS) and blogger Adrián Latorre (El Androide Libre). Also present were global figures such as Carl J. Schramm, President and CEO of The Kauffman Foundation, the prestigious private US-based international institution that is dedicated to entrepreneurial innovation and economic growth; and Javier Monzón, an economist and president of Indra, the Spanish technology multinational dedicated to promoting innovation and talent. Various basic themes were discussed throughout the day, such as the importance of stimulating the dream of becoming an entrepreneur among the young and an education in entrepreneurship, highlighting how youth initiatives, if they succeed, can end up transforming society. All this, with the ultimate aim of supporting the new IMPULSA generation.

Walt & The Group In 1941, Walt Disney landed in Brazil to begin a journey through Latin America, accompanied by 18 of his closest co-workers.

It was wartime. The Nazi influence in the south of Latin America was starting to worry the United States. President Roosevelt, as José Miguel Vilar-Bou tells us in the report inside this issue, needed to counteract it. Why did the president encourage the cartoon genius to carry out the journey? In what way did it affect the Disney factory? In 2008, to recall that adventure, the documentary Walt y El Grupo was presented, an audiovisual jewel produced

by Disney that here in the Babylon team left us goggle-eyed on seeing it. The director, Ted Thomas is the son of Frank Thomas - one of those who have passed into history as Disney’s Nine Old Men, the pioneers of animated films at the company. Ted has also talked with us in this issue. PAGE 79.

The Catalan journalist offers in Live From his views of Bangkok, the city which is his operations base. He has been correspondent for the Spanish daily El Mundo in the Asia-Pacific region since 1998, and has covered conflicts from Afghanistan to Kashmir and East Timor, as well as the nuclear crisis at Fukushima in Japan. He was born in Madrid in 1958. A writer and lover of photography, in 2007 he participated in the anthology of tales called Parábola de los talentos. In 2010 he published his own first book of tales, Andar por el aire (Walking in air). At present he is a professor of creative writing at the Escuela de Escritores in Madrid. Time for entrepreneurs El tiempo de los emprendedores

N LIFE, AND IN BUSINESS, IT’S IMPORTANT to be aware of our own reference points and the values that we adhere to. In my case, having been born and brought up in the Pyrenees, I inured myself with the natural mind-set of those lands, of initiative, persistence and a capacity of unceasing adaptation in a changing environment, characteristics that flow on into a constant enthusiasm for doing something and a will to transform and improve my surroundings. From the first business deal that we carry out, we follow our ideas, visions and dreams. We see the fruits of our efforts, supporting ourselves with aspirations, a commitment to generate value and determination when taking on situations with a total openness and a readiness to do things in a different way.

Right now, that readiness to adapt to new proposals and to do things in a different way is more important than ever before. We are in a thrilling moment of transformation and global rebalancing that is without precedent. It is a worldwide process in which the different economic powers are repositioning, in which the features and the weight of the main sectors of economic activity are changing, and in which talent, creativity and innovation are increasingly being taken into account as the engines for creating wealth; but especially of a change in sensitivities and social and business commitments, to produce value for our environment.

This factor is going to be decisive and could and should change the principles of capitalism. A proposal -shared value- in which companies generate value, seeing the generation of value to society and their environment as a priority, not as an externality but as a source of added value that is brought in, that contributes to a positive spiral of business and social enrichment.

This evolution of the environment and of principles defines for us the scenario in which we are soon going to be living, and the enterprises and projects on which we ought to be working should be conscious of that reality. Being aware of it will oblige us to push and encourage new entrepreneurs into taking advantage of and promoting these changes of scene. A global scenario, lifted up by growing and yet to develop sectors, in knowledge and in talent, a scenario that lives facing up to society with a vision and attitude of integrated enrichment.

Definitively, a scenario in which we are supported by our most solid values and reference points; creating business initiatives and projects to make our dreams come true, and enriching our environment, one in which we can fight to see our dreams fulfilled.

N LA VIDA, Y EN LOS NEGOCIOS, es importante ser consciente de nuestras propias referencias y valores en los que nos basamos. En mi caso, el haber nacido y crecido en el Pirineo, me curtió con una actitud natural de esta tierra, de iniciativa, tesón y capacidad de adaptación constante a un entorno cambiante, unas características que desembocaron en un afán constante por emprender y voluntad de transformar y mejorar mi entorno. Desde el primer negocio que impulsamos, perseguimos nuestras ideas, visiones y sueños, y vimos el fruto de nuestro esfuerzo, apoyándonos en la ilusión, compromiso por generar valor y determinación a abordar las situaciones con una apertura total y predisposición a hacer las cosas de forma diferente.

Actualmente, esa predisposición a la adaptación, a nuevos planteamientos y a hacer las cosas de forma diferente, es más importante que nunca. Estamos en un apasionante momento de transformación y reequilibrios globales sin precedentes. Un proceso mundial, en el que las diferentes potencias económicas se están reposicionando; en el que se está cambiando la fisonomía y peso de los principales sectores de actividad económica; en el que el talento, creatividad e innovación son cada vez más tenidos en cuenta como motores de riqueza; pero especialmente un cambio de sensibilidad y compromiso social y empresarial por generar valor en su entorno.

Este factor va a ser determinante y puede y debe cambiar los principios del propio capitalismo. Un planteamiento (shared value) en el que las empresas generan valor, considerando la generación de valor a la sociedad y su entorno como una prioridad, no como externalidad, sino como una fuente de aportación de valor inducido, que contribuya a una espiral positiva de enriquecimiento empresarial y social.

Esta evolución del entorno y de principios nos define el escenario en el que vamos a vivir próximamente, y las empresas y proyectos en los que debemos trabajar deben tener presente esa realidad. Ser consciente de ello, nos obliga a impulsar y animar a los nuevos emprendedores a aprovechar e impulsar esos cambios de escenario. Un escenario global, apalancado en los sectores crecientes y por desarrollar, en el conocimiento y talento, un escenario que viva de cara a la sociedad con una visión y actitud de enriquecimiento integrado.

En definitiva, un escenario en el que apoyándonos en nuestros valores y referencias más sólidos, crear iniciativas y proyectos empresariales para hacer realidad nuestras ilusiones enriqueciendo nuestro entorno, un entorno en el que podemos luchar por ver convertidos nuestros sueños.

The 26 year-old flamenco dancer from Malaga has won the Premio Nacional de Danza 2011 that is awarded each year by the Ministry of Culture. The jury made special mention of “her contribution to the revival of flamenco art and her versatility and strength in interpreting it”.

A fiesta every day Summer fiestas in Spain are a bit like the legend that tells how two thousand years ago a squirrel could cross the Iberian Peninsula without touching the ground for even a moment, jumping from tree to tree. In the same way, if we set out to do it, in summer we could cross the country stopping at a different fiesta every day, in a different place. But there are more to see than the massive celebrations that capture the images on the news. Sanfermines in Pamplona, which kicks off the fiesta season every 7 July; la Tomatina in Buñol, the small town in Valencia province which is submerged the last Wednesday of August in a sea of cathartic tomatoes; the Feria de Málaga, the most international of the summer fairs in Andalucia; and the Descenso del Sella, in Asturias, where an impressive parallel fiesta scene has emerged from a sporting event (the canoe race down the river Sella). These we know well. But during these months, fiestas spring up naturally in every corner. The medieval fiestas of Galicia and Castilla; the celebrations of patron saints’ days in the small provincial capitals; the popular pilgrimages and open-air festivals of towns and villages, which reach their peak every 15 August. Summer in Spain is synonymous with fiesta, and life merges with them into a dream.

Las fiestas del verano español se parecen a la leyenda que cuenta cómo hace dos milenios una ardilla podía atravesar la Península sin pisar el suelo ni siquiera un instante, saltando entre los árboles. De la misma manera, si no los propusiéramos, en verano podríamos cruzar el país deteniéndonos cada día en una fiesta diferente, en un lugar distinto. Pero no sólo existen las masivas celebraciones que colapsan de imágenes los informativos. En España verano es sinónimo de fiesta, y la vida se confunde con ellas en un sueño.

Madrid has been an obvious inspiration for Antonio López, one of the contemporary Spanish artists who have dedicated the most works to the capital. The Museo Thyssen has organized a retrospective exhibition that demonstrate the unmistakably detailed style of the artist. This show, on its way to being a record, will remain open until 25 September.

Madrid ha supuesto una clara inspiración para Antonio López, uno de los artistas españoles contemporáneos que más obras han dedicado a la capital. El Museo Thyssen ha organizado una retrospectiva que muestran el inconfundible estilo detallista del autor. Esta exposición, que va camino de récord, permanecerá abierta hasta el próximo 25 de septiembre.

En Vivo Getafe 2011 brings together Rock, Metal, Punk, World Music and Hip Hop. From Rosendo, Sôber, The Offspring, Los Delinqüentes to Kiko Veneno, a total of 45 artists will be giving performances on 8, 9 and 10 September. It will be the second edition of this festival to be staged at the Getafe Open Air venue (in the city of Getafe, just south of Madrid) En Vivo Getafe 2011 reúne Rock, Metal, Punk, World Music y Hip Hop. Desde Rosendo, Sôber, The Offspring, Los Delinqüentes a Kiko Veneno, un total de 45 artistas ofrecerán sus actuaciones los días 8, 9 y 10 de septiembre. The exhibition Atesorar España (Treasures of Spain) brings one up close to scenes of our country in the 19th and 20th centuries.

It’s a selection of more than 300 images taken by Spanish and foreign photographers, today the property of the Hispanic Society of America. The display can be seen until November at the Bancaja cultural centres in Valencia and Alicante.

The popular flamenco song sung by the miners of Cartagena receives homage every summer at the Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas. THE RECENT DESIGNATION OF SPANISH COMICS as the lead players at the next Angouleme International Comics Festival (the most important of its kind in the world) is not just a historic milestone. The naming has also confirmed the very sweet moment the genre is experiencing. In 2012, the 16 leading Spanish artists will be meeting up in France.

To understand the Spanish comic scene, one has to seek out its origins in the comics that our parents and grandparents read. Strip cartoons that came from the brushes of the likes of Escobar and Ibáñez, the legendary father of Mortadelo and Filemón, who this year celebrates his 75th birthday. It was precisely these pioneers of the sixties who cartoonist Paco Roca paid tribute to in El invierno del dibujante (The winter of the cartoonist), the overall winner at the last Salón del Cómic held in Barcelona. Also presented there was La Huella de Lorca, (The footprint of Lorca) by Carlos Hernández, the first illustrated novel about the Andalusian poet. From those historic comics, there is one that has been on the lips of everybody recently: the classic stories of El Capitán Trueno (Captain Thunder), by Víctor Mora, that have now been captured in a film that will be given its premiere in October in 3D. There is another side of the coin. We have reached a very high level as far as creators are concerned, some of them admired right around the world - even making number one spots in the USA, such as Jesús Saiz, who was nominated for the Eisner Awards (the Oscars of the comic world). Yet the domestic industry is not at the same high level of creativity, even less so in the current situation.

The few launches and the small circulations today mean that many of the best authors are working for French and US publishing houses. Although Angouleme will surely turn the tables.

LA RECIENTE DESIGNACIÓN DEL CÓMIC español como principal protagonista del próximo Festival de Angulema (el encuentro internacional de cómic más importante del mundo) no es sólo un hito histórico. El nombramiento ha confirmado también el momento dulcísimo que vive el género. En 2012, se darán cita en Francia 16 de los artistas españoles más significativos.

Para entender nuestro cómic, hay que buscar sus orígenes en aquéllos tebeos que nuestros padres y abuelos leyeron. Historietas que salieron de pinceles como el de Escobar o Ibáñez, al mítico padre de Mortadelo y Filemón, que este año celebra su 75 aniversario.

Precisamente a los pioneros de los años 60 es a quien rinde homenaje el dibujante Paco Roca en El invierno del dibujante, triunfadora absoluta en el último Salón del Cómic de Barcelona, donde también se presentó La Huella de Lorca, de Carlos Hernández, la primera novela gráfica sobre el poeta andaluz. De aquéllos históricos tebeos, hay uno que está en boca de todos últimamente: las clásicas historias de El Capitán Trueno, de Víctor Mora, ya se han plasmado en una película que se estrenará en octubre en 3D. La otra cara de la moneda también existe. Si bien nos encontramos con un nivel enorme en el ámbito de los creadores, algunos admirados en todo el mundo -siendo incluso números 1 en EEUU, como Jesús Saiz, nominado a los Premios Eisner (los Oscar del cómic)- la industria nacional no está a la altura del nivel creativo, aún menos en el contexto actual. Los pocos lanzamientos y las tiradas pequeñas de hoy en día provocan que muchos de los mejores autores trabajen para editoriales francesas o norteamericanas. Aunque seguro que Angulema le da la vuelta a la tortilla.

There was a period in Spain when publishers of comics tried everything to raise the cultural level of the world of the strip cartoon. The newsagent’s stand was abandoned in favour of specialist booksellers and they stopped publishing magazines that sold in many thousands. The people who read them suddenly stopped buying them, creating a massive generation gap. There was no continuity. The readers of old could have been those who would now be buying illustrated novels and adult comics.

Today, there are few really international Spanish authors.

There are many who work with French, British and (ever more) US publishing groups, but the numbers of authors who are famous can be counted on the fingers of one hand right now: Carlos Pacheco, Miguelanxo Prado, Max, Carlos Giménez and also, surely, Juanjo Guarnido.

En España, hubo una época en la que los editores de cómic trataron por todos los medios de elevar el nivel cultural del mundo de la historieta. Así se abandonó el kiosco por las librerías especializadas y se dejó de publicar aquellas revistas que se vendían a decenas de miles. La gente que las leía dejó, de repente, de poder comprarlas, creándose un hueco generacional tremendo. No hubo un continuo.

Estos lectores de antaño podrían haber sido los que ahora estuviesen comprando novelas gráficas y cómics de adulto.

Hoy en día, los autores españoles realmente internacionales también son pocos. Son muchos los que colaboran con editoriales francesas, inglesas y americanas (cada vez más), pero los autores con renombre se pueden contar con los dedos de una mano ahora mismo: Carlos Pacheco, Miguelanxo Prado, Max, Carlos Giménez y, seguramente, también Juanjo Guarnido.

WHILE THE HIPPIE MOVEMENT of the sixties shook up the values of U.S society, Spain was hermetically sealed from the outside. It had been a long time since any fresh air got in, but something new was stirring on the beaches. Stories about youngsters in California who slid across the waves on boards of wood pushed a few to imitate them, using their own homemade boards. The adrenaline and the sensation of freedom they experienced on descending from the crest of a wave were the first steps towards the growth of surfing on the coasts of Spain.

Sport, or a way of life: since then surfing has not stopped growing. And Spain has some of the best beaches for doing it in Europe. The Cantabrian Sea is an unquenchable source of good waves, coveted by surfers from right around the world.

Mundaka, in Vizcaya province, regarded as having the best wave in Europe, is certainly the most international. But there are many other spots in the Cantabrian, the Mediterranean and the Atlantic –especially in the Canary Islands- that each year welcome the heavyweights of surfing. It is on these beaches where surfers like Aritz Aranburu, the first Spanish man to be ranked among the top 45 in the world, Hodei Collazo, Gony Zubizarreta, Pablo Gutiérrez and Mario Azurza, learnt their trade. Their names are well known on the circuit.

The growing following that has been forged around surfing has also created an alternative market. Each year the many schools that have been emerging teach thousands of people to stand up on a board and enjoy the values of freedom, fun and communion with nature that in their day so excited the original surfers.

MIENTRAS EL MOVIMIENTO HIPPIE, en los 60, descomponía los valores de la sociedad norteamericana, en España, cerrada herméticamente al exterior, hacía mucho tiempo que no entraba aire fresco. Pero algo nuevo se empezó a gestar en sus playas. Los rumores sobre los jóvenes que en California se deslizaban sobre las olas con tablas de madera, empujaron a unos pocos a imitarlos con soportes construidos por ellos mismos. La adrenalina y la sensación de libertad que experimentaron al descender la cresta de una ola, fueron el primer paso para el crecimiento del surf en la costa española.

Deporte o forma de vida, desde entonces el surf no ha dejado de extenderse. España cuenta con algunas de las mejores playas para practicarlo en Europa. El mar Cantábrico es una fuente inagotable de buenas olas, codiciadas por surfistas de todo el mundo. Mundaka, en Vizcaya, considerada la mejor ola de Europa, es seguramente la más internacional. Pero muchos otros spots del Cantábrico, el Mediterráneo y el Atlántico -sobre todo en las islas Canarias- acogen cada año a los pesos pesados del surf. Y es en estas playas donde también se han formado surfers como Aritz Aranburu, primer español en colarse entre los 45 mejores del mundo; Hodei Collazo, Gony Zubizarreta, Pablo Gutiérrez o Mario Azurza, nombres de sobra conocidos en el circuito.

La creciente afición ha fraguado en torno al surf, además, un mercado alternativo. Las numerosas escuelas que han ido surgiendo enseñan cada año a miles de personas a ponerse de pie sobre una tabla y disfrutar de los valores de libertad, diversión y comunión con la naturaleza que apasionaron, en su día, a los precursores del surf.

BM: What is the best wave that you have surfed, and your favourite spot?

MM: For a spot, I’d go with the Los Locos (the madmen’s) beach in Cantabria, the place where I learnt to catch waves and where I’ve enjoyed and continue to enjoy great times. And one of my best waves was in Fuerteventura, in the Canary Islands.

BM: What is a session of perfect waves for you?

MM: With my own group of people, a good ambience and waves of a metre and a half; and with a light wind against you and good tubes. And if there is a photographer on the shore capturing that moment then it becomes unbeatable.

BM: Is there really a boom in surfing in Spain?

MM: It’s moving on from being a hobby to being a duty and a training method for many. People are taking it more seriously. Now the children who are starting out are being taught to go into the water to train and to compete.

BM: Cuál es la mejor ola que has surfeado y tu spot favorito?

MM: Como spot, me quedo con la playa de Los Locos, en Cantabria, donde he aprendido a coger olas y he pasado y sigo pasando muy buenos momentos. Y una de mis mejores olas ha sido en Fuerteventura, en Canarias.

BM: ¿Cómo es para ti una sesión de olas perfecta?

MM: Con mi gente, buen ambiente y olas de metro y medio. Con un vientito suave en contra y buenos tubos. Y si hay un fotógrafo en la orilla perpetuando el momento ya sería inmejorable.

BM: ¿Existe verdaderamente un auge del surf en España?

MM: Está pasando de ser una afición a ser una obligación o entrenamiento para muchos. La gente se lo está tomando más en serio. Ahora a los niños que ������ empiezan se les educa para que entren al agua a entrenar, a competir.

IT’S NOT EASY TO MAKE A MARK in London, to remain visible in a metropolis so permeable and transitory, one accustomed to spinning out fashions and booms. But Spanish culture has achieved it. It’s got embedded in the genetic code of the British capital, especially over the last five years.

We’ve already been in on the expansion in the city of the full alphabet of Spanish clothes’ brands, and now it’s not strange for us to see on the facade of the Tate Modern a poster announcing the exhibition of an artist from the homeland. The most important gallery of modern art in the United Kingdom is a good barometer of trends, and in the last five years has presented significant retrospective exhibitions of the works of Salvador Dalí (2007), Juan Muñoz (2008) and Miró (2011).

It also hosts Desnudo, hojas verdes y busto, (Nude, green leaves and bust) the most expensive painting by Picasso, a painter to whom Tate Britain is scheduled to dedicate an exhibition that will highlight his ties with the United Kingdom.

As a response to this success, the Spanish Film Festival has doubled its number of editions. Another indicator of the growing Spanish influence is the continual growth each year of the veteran events, A Taste of Spain and Flamenco Festival, and the more recent Spain Now. Meanwhile, in the world of music, a new phenomenon is taking place. Filling London theatres with flamenco shows is nothing new, but what is new is the growing number of concerts for other types of groups. Every day more names are being added to the list: Amaral, Celtas Cortos, Fito, Hombres G., La Mala Rodríguez, Los Delinqüentes, Love of Lesbian, Pereza, Rosendo, Violadores del Verso... We’ll be keeping an eye on them.

NO ES SENCILLO INFLUIR sobre Londres, permanecer visible en una metrópoli tan permeable y transitoria, acostumbrada a centrifugar modas y booms. La cultura española lo ha logrado. Se ha incrustado en el código genético de la capital británica, sobre todo en el último lustro.

Ya hemos asistido a la expansión en la ciudad del abecedario completo de las marcas de ropa españolas, y ahora tampoco nos parece extraño ver en las fachadas de la Tate Modern un cartel anunciando la exposición de un artista patrio. La galería de arte moderno más importante de Reino Unido es un buen termómetro de tendencias, y en los últimos cinco años allí se han presentado retrospectivas relevantes de Salvador Dalí (2007), Juan Muñoz (2008) y Miró (2011). También alberga Desnudo, hojas verdes y busto, el cuadro más caro de Picasso, pintor al que la Tate Britain tiene previsto dedicar una exposición en la que se mostrarán precisamente sus vínculos con Reino Unido.

En respuesta al éxito, el Spanish Film Festival ha duplicado sus ediciones; y otro indicador de la creciente influencia española es la renovación de la magnitud, cada año, de los veteranos A Taste of Spain y Flamenco Festival y el más reciente Spain Now. Aunque en el mundo de la música se está produciendo un fenómeno nuevo. Que el flamenco llenase los teatros londinenses no era nuevo, pero sí la multiplicación de los conciertos de otro tipo de grupos. Cada día se añaden más nombres a la lista: Amaral, Celtas Cortos, Fito, Hombres G., La Mala Rodríguez, Los Delinqüentes, Love of Lesbian, Pereza, Rosendo, Violadores del Verso... Estaremos atentos.

Despite the distance, it seems like Spain has found enough channels to make its mark in New York, an essential focus point for measuring the international pulse of the cultural output of the country. If summer bids farewell leaving a sweet taste of Spain in the city -Don Quijote at the American Ballet Theater; sculptor Jaume Penchas at Madison Square Park; Jarabe de Palo in Central Park; Picasso at the MOMA; La Alhambra at the botanical gardens) – fall is also going to be full of ideas. In September, Custo will be disembarking on the island of Manhattan to present his new collections at the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. This edition will be the fifteenth that he has participated in. In the world of sport, Nadal will be returning to the US Open to try and retain the trophy he won last year; and in art the season will begin with the multimedia exhibition Jóvenes Creadores Casa Pintada (literally Young Creators Painted House) at the Gabarrón Foundation, with the impressive works of two talents in the making, Nono García and Ramón González.

A pesar de la distancia, parece que España ha encontrado canales suficientes para calar en Nueva York, un foco imprescindible para medir el pulso internacional de la producción cultural de un país. Si el verano se marcha dejando un dulce gusto español en la ciudad -Don Quijote en el American Ballet Theater; el escultor Jaume Penchas en Madison Square Park; Jarabe de Palo en Central Park; Picasso en el MOMA; La Alhambra en el Jardín Botánico), el otoño se presenta cargado de propuestas.

Francis Bacon A COMPUTER AS ONE OF THE MAIN working tools and constantly used for calculations and algorithms. The result?

The poetic, sculptural, audiovisual and installation work of Elena Asins, one of the pioneers in computer assisted art in Spain. Her career, which got under way in the sixties, can be admired at present at the Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía.

The exhibition Elena Asins: Fragmentos de la memoria, which will remain on show at the art gallery in Madrid until 31 October, runs from her early works to some of her latest. “Perfection, order and discipline in the work, and not following fashions but your own language” are her way of doing art, she says. These concepts are precisely those that have led her to become the innovative, distinctive and admired artist that she is today. However, she puts passion before recognition: “I don’t go looking for honours but the truth in my own way of doing things”. Elena Asins talks to Babylon Magazine about her own particular way of conceiving art.

UN ORDENADOR COMO UNA DE LAS PRINCIPALES herramientas de trabajo y el empleo constante de cálculos y algoritmos. ¿El resultado? La obra poética, escultórica, pictórica, audiovisual y de instalación de Elena Asins, una de las pioneras en el arte asistido por ordenador en España. Su trayectoria, que arranca en los años 60, se puede admirar estos meses en el Museo Centro de Arte Reina Sofía. La exposición Elena Asins. Fragmentos de la memoria, que permanecerá en el museo madrileño hasta el próximo 31 de octubre, abarca desde sus primeras obras hasta sus trabajos más actuales. “La perfección, el orden, la disciplina dentro del trabajo y el no atenerte a las modas sino seguir tu propio lenguaje”, dice, son su forma de hacer arte. Estos conceptos son precisamente los que le han llevado a ser la innovadora, diferente y admirada artista que hoy es. Sin embargo, ella antepone la pasión por lo que hace a los reconocimientos: “no voy buscando honores sino la verdad en mi propio hacer”. Elena Asins habla con Babylon Magazine sobre su singular forma de concebir el arte.

BABYLON MAGAZINE.: You are a pioneer in creating works of art with the assistance of computer technology.

How has this way of working evolved?

ELENA ASINS: Before you could programme, you first had to learn the IT languages. Now it’s all done for you. At Columbia University I had to learn Artificial Intelligence for programming my works, as well as studying the Fortran and Pascal languages.

Now, all this has been cut out. You learn four commands. IT is more popular and within the reach of everyone.

BM: From the start you were Interested in mathematics combined with art. Wasn’t that a bit strange in the Spain of the ‘60s?

EA: I have always worked with grants. On one occasion a panel got together and asked me: ‘Why does a painter want a computer?’ Do you see the ignorance of those times? They couldn’t conceive that art could be produced through a computer. And when I returned to Spain, with a PC, the architects said to me; ‘You draw with this?’ Art is compatible with mathematics because mathematics is in everything. The universe is mathematical.

BM: You have gone as far as saying that you are trying to create a perfect world.

EA: Yes, as is the mathematical world, although it then should be applicable. In the same way I conceive that my work can be applied to urban planning, let’s suppose, for building a house. However, when it comes to creating I am not intending to make an everyday thing. It’s putting myself into my pure creative world. My work has as its concepts perfection, order, discipline within the work, of not following fashions but your own language until you create your own way of understanding the world and of transmitting this.

BM: Does the random have a place in your work?

EA: No, I’m completely useless when it comes to improvising. I have to think a lot about a work, to do a pile of numbers beforehand, during the preparation phase.

BM: From your work, what stands out is that you have always lived on the margins of fashion. Have you ever felt that you weren’t understood?

EA: They didn’t criticize me because people aren’t stupid. They admired the fact that I didn’t follow fashion precisely, and I was envied for that. But the truth is that it’s cost me a lot not to do it, because you don’t sell, you are not in the news, in all those things that make the artist stand out. You feel a bit marginalized, but I appreciate it because I need a lot of concentration and silence for my work, and I have a great love of solitude. So, I have not suffered because of that. Totally the opposite, it was what I needed.

BM: When you were awarded the gold medal for merit at the Fine Arts’ ceremony in 2006, did you feel you’d entered the Olympus of Spanish artists?

EA: I am happy when I am working although, obviously, it made me happy when they gave me the medal. But it’s not that that makes me happy but my work itself. I don’t go looking for honours; I look for the truth in my own existence and in my own way of doing things.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: Usted es pionera en crear obras de arte con el apoyo de la informática. ¿Cómo ha evolucionado esta metodología de trabajo?

ELENA ASINS: Antes programabas, lo primero era aprender los lenguajes informáticos, y ahora te lo dan todo hecho. En la Columbia University tuve que aprender Artificial Intelligence para programar mis obras, así como estudiar los lenguajes Fortran y Pascal. Ahora todo eso se ha eliminado, se aprenden cuatro comandos, la informática es más popular y está al alcance de todos.

BM: Desde sus inicios, se interesó por las matemáticas en combinación con el arte. ¿No era algo raro en la España de los 60?

EA: Yo siempre he estado con becas. Una vez, un jurado se reunió y me dijeron: ‘¿Para qué quiere una pintora un ordenador?’. ¿Comprendes la ignorancia de la época? No podían concebir que el arte pudiera producirse por ordenador. Y cuando volví a España, con un ordenador personal, los arquitectos me decían: ‘¿Con esto dibujas?’. El arte es compatible con las matemáticas porque las matemáticas están en todo.

El universo es matemático.

BM: Ha llegado a afirmar que trata de crear un mundo perfecto.

EA: Sí, como lo es el mundo matemático, aunque luego sea aplicable. De la misma manera concibo que mi obra pueda aplicarse al urbanismo, supongamos, para hacer una casa. No obstante, a la hora de crear no tengo la intención de hacer una cosa cotidiana. Es meterme en mi mundo creativo puro. Mi obra tiene como conceptos la perfección, el orden, la disciplina dentro del trabajo, el no atenerte a las modas sino seguir tu propio lenguaje hasta que crees una forma propia de entender el mundo y de transmitirlo.

BM: ¿Lo aleatorio tiene cabida en su obra?

EA: No, para improvisar soy completamente nula, tengo que pensar muchísimo una obra, hacer montón de números antes durante la fase de preparación.

BM: De su obra resalta que ha vivido siempre al margen de la moda. ¿Ha sentido alguna vez que no le entendían?

EA: No me criticaban porque la gente no es tonta.

Admiraban que yo precisamente no siguiera la moda y me envidiaban por eso. Pero es verdad que me ha costado muy caro no hacerlo porque no vendes, no estás en el campo de noticias, en todas estas cosas que hacen que el artista brille. Te sientes un poco marginada pero lo agradezco porque yo necesito mucha concentración y silencio para mi trabajo y amo mucho mi soledad. Entonces no he sufrido por eso, todo lo contrario, era lo que necesitaba.

BM: Cuando le dieron la medalla de las Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes en 2006, ¿se sintió dentro del Olimpo de los artistas españoles?

EA: Yo soy feliz cuando estoy trabajando aunque, claro, me dio alegría cuando me dieron la medalla. Pero no es eso lo que me hace feliz sino mi propio trabajo.

No voy buscando honores, voy buscando verdad en mi propia existencia y en mi propio hacer.

Cybernetics artists in Spain

Elena Asins is not the only one who has used this technique in the application of cybernetics to artistic processes. Many other artists, along with those the woman from Madrid has worked with, make up the team who originated computer assisted art in Spain. José Luis Alexanco, worried to start with by the “problem of movement and transformation” in art, changed the direction of his research towards a language that put him in contact with the calculator. In the sixties, Alexanco was the only one who, doing his own programming, managed a pictorial and sculptural work that still functions as such. For her part, the work of Soledad Sevilla, which falls into the framework of geometric abstraction, is characterized by the analysis and development of geometric structures on a plane. This painter from Valencia saw her work as being influenced by Manuel Barbadillo, whose own works fall into the concept of “module”. In this way, it makes room for paintings that are extremely rigorous and symmetrical.

Elena Asins no es la única que ha utilizado esta técnica en la aplicación de la cibernética a los procesos artísticos. Otros muchos artistas, junto a los que ha trabajado la madrileña, componen el elenco del origen del arte asistido por ordenador en España. José Luis Alexanco, preocupado en sus inicios por el “problema del movimiento y la transformación” en el arte, viró su investigación hacia una lenguaje que le ponía en contacto con la calculadora. En los 60, Alexanco fue el único que, programando él mismo consiguió una obra pictórica y escultórica que sigue funcionando como tal. Por su parte, la obra de Soledad Sevilla, enmarcada dentro de la abstracción geométrica, está caracterizada por el análisis y desarrollo de estructuras geométricas sobre un plano.

Esta pintora valenciana vio su obra influenciada por Manuel Barbadillo, cuyos trabajos descansan sobre el concepto del “módulo”. Así, da lugar a pinturas extremadamente rigurosas y simétricas.

Proud of national cinema

by Bárbara González “There’s talent, and a lot of it.”

With these words Enrique González Macho supports Spanish cinema, which is little valued, he says, by film watchers from our own country.

Perhaps because no one is a prophet in his or her own land, “we are critical of and cruel with our own,” he says. The new president of the Spanish Academy of Cinema is in the middle of taking over control at the institution. He says he has been surprised by the “frenetic activity.”

This new stage looks as if it will follow a similar path, given that “there are many things that are fine and it’s not a case of changing them.”

González Macho aims to unite all the sectors -production, distribution and ancillary companies, among others-, because “we are in the same boat and we have to row in the same direction”. The ‘controversial’ legacy of his predecessor in the job, Álex de la Iglesia, weighs and generates intrigue as to how to channel among producers, distributors and film exhibitors the much argued subject of author’s rights on the web. Asked the obvious question, he insists on differentiating the web surfer from those who “feather their own nests from the work of the rest: the pirates.” “We are in favour of content being available on the Internet, of the best quality possible, and at affordable prices, but it must be legal and respect the rights of the author.” Proud of Spanish products, he praises directors and actors. However, he knows it is a hard profession as “there are many who are called forward but few who are chosen.” Defender of film as both culture and entertainment, he underlines its function as a generator of emotions and points out that its goal is to get “the public to have a good time: if it’s a drama, for them to cry a lot and if it’s a comedy to laugh a lot.”

“Talento hay, y mucho”. Con estas palabras apoya Enrique González Macho el cine español, poco valorado, dice, por los propios espectadores de nuestro país. Quizá por lo de que nadie es profeta en su tierra, asegura que “somos críticos y crueles con lo nuestro”. El nuevo presidente de la Academia de Cine se encuentra en pleno despegue al volante de la institución. De ella le ha sorprendido “su frenética actividad”. En esta nueva etapa, que se perfila continuista ya que “hay muchas cosas que están bien y no se trata de cambiarlas”, González Macho pretende reunir a todos los sectores -producción, distribución o empresas auxiliares, entre otras entidades- porque “vamos en el mismo barco y tenemos que remar en el mismo sentido”. El `polémico’ legado de su predecesor en el cargo, Álex de la Iglesia, pesa y genera intriga acerca de cómo encauza el productor, distribuidor y exhibidor de cine el discutido tema de los derechos de autor en la Red. Ante la obligada pregunta, insiste en diferenciar al internauta del que “se lucra con el trabajo de los demás: el pirata”. “Estamos a favor de que haya contenidos en Internet, de la mejor calidad posible y a precios asequibles, pero que sean legales y respeten los derechos de autor”. Orgulloso del producto nacional, alaba los directores y actores españoles. Sin embargo, sabe que es una profesión dura ya que “son muchos los llamados y pocos los elegidos”.

Defensor del cine como cultura y entretenimiento, hace hincapié en su función como generador de emociones y apunta que “se trata de que el público lo pase bien: si es un drama, que llore mucho y si es una comedia, que ría mucho”.

New culinary concepts and the work of emerging artists, promoted by Spain Now, will together take on this new stage for Spanish cooking and culture. Nacho Manzano, the prestigious Spanish chef awarded two stars by Michelin, continues to head up this enterprising project.

Ibérica continúa su imparable carrera con la apertura, a principios de noviembre, de su próximo restaurante en Canary Wharf. Novedosos conceptos culinarios y artistas emergentes, promovidos por Spain Now, afrontarán juntos esta nueva etapa de la cocina española. Nacho Manzano, prestigioso chef español galardonado con dos estrellas Michelin, seguirá a la cabeza de este emprendedor proyecto.

En febrero, el evento culinario más exitoso de la ciudad, junto con Madrid Fusión, regresó por cuarta vez a la capital española. Su concepto se basa en la democratización de los precios en los mejores restaurantes de cada ciudad. La próxima parada: Nueva York, en noviembre.

Telepizza keeps growing in Latin America

n February the most successful culinary event in the city, along with Madrid Fusión, returned for the fourth time to the Spanish capital.

The concept is based on offering affordable prices for selective taster menus. Next stop will be New York, in November, where Madrid City Hall will be taking part, bringing along the best of the capital’s traditional and avant garde gastronomy.

he Spanish multinational Telepizza is continuing with its expansion plans in Latin America. After having established itself in Colombia and Chile, the chain has just taken a new step forward in the market by setting up in Peru. The pizza company now has more than 580 outlets abroad, in Andorra, China, The United Arab Emirates, Poland and Portugal, as well as in the previously mentioned Latin American countries.

Después de haberse establecido en Colombia y Chile, la cadena acaba de dar un nuevo paso al frente en el mercado iniciando su actividad en Perú. With the new denomination - Marca de Calidad Cocina Castilla y León – it will recognize restaurants and bakers’ shops that meet minimum requirements such as the menu including 60% of its dishes made from products from the region or 70% in the case of wines.

Summer cuisine

In summer it’s not obligatory to change heavy dishes for lighter ones. Although restaurants adapt their cuisine in tune with the food products available and the time of year, one’s diet doesn’t have to vary that much in summer, as long as one keeps to healthy eating.

Climate influences cooking.

For example, with my Andalucian colleague Dani García I have many gastronómic affinities and important links. But it’s true that the basis of his cooking is for summer and ours (in the north) is more for winter.

Spain, along with Brazil, Peru and the Asian countries are among those in the world with the greatest depth and variety of gastronomy. We are fortunate.

Now, even us cooks get called up to do interviews. This, along with many other things, we owe in great part to Ferran Adrià.

En verano no hay que cambiar forzosamente los platos pesados por otros más ligeros. Aunque los restaurantes adaptan su cocina en función del producto disponible y la época del año, una dieta no tiene por qué variar demasiado en verano siempre que se haya llevado una alimentación sana.

El clima influye en la cocina. Por ejemplo, con mi colega andaluz Dani García tengo muchas afinidades gastronómicas y puntos de conexión importantes, pero es cierto que la base de su cocina es de verano y la nuestra es más de invierno.

España, junto con Brasil, Perú y los países asiáticos, es uno de los países del mundo con mayor profundidad y variedad gastronómica. Somos afortunados por tener tantas oportunidades de conocer productos.

Ahora a los cocineros incluso se les llama para hacer entrevistas. Eso, en otras muchas cosas, también se lo debemos en gran parte a Ferran Adrià.

SINCE JUNE MILLIONS of people have been typing this word into Google to get an answer. Not surprising when you take into account that this mysterious word doesn’t even appear in the dictionary of the Spanish Royal Academy (RAE). It means “island of the blue salamanders” and refers to the proper name of a state in Mexico. Now it has also just become the most attractive word in the Spanish language, at least according to the 33,000 Internet users who voted to celebrate Día E (E Day – billed as the fiesta for all of those who speak Spanish). It was the favourite among those proposed by some 30 personalities. They came from poets like Antonio Gamoneda, who put forward the word Tú (you); to sports personalities such as Diego Forlán and Pau Gasol, who chose Solidaridad (Solidarity) and Belleza (Beauty), respectively. In the end the winning word was proposed by the actor Gael García Bernal, ahead of sueño (dream), from Luis Rojas Marcos, gracias (thanks), from Raphael, and libertad (liberty) from Mario Vargas Llosa, (who also chose what was the preferred word of Goya). As to be expected, many good-sounding candidates never made it into the contest. Probably as many as there are people.

Archipiélago (archipelago) was the favourite word of Nicaragua’s Rubén Darío; and another poet, Luis Cernuda, felt a special attraction for Andaluz (the adjective for Andalucia.) For his part, writer Julio Cortázar thought that words, on the strength of being continually repeated and badly used, “end up being exhausted”, which is why he decided to invent them. At first sight the beauty of the Spanish language looks to be too large to embrace. Perhaps that’s why Pablo Neruda decided to love them all equally: “They are so beautiful that I want to put them all in my poem”.

¿QUERÉTARO? MILLONES DE PERSONAS han tecleado desde junio esta palabra en Google para obtener una respuesta. Nada extraño teniendo en cuenta que este misterioso vocablo ni siquiera aparece en el diccionario de la Real Academia Española (RAE). Significa “isla de las salamandras azules” y se trata del nombre propio de un estado mexicano, pero se acaba de convertir también en la palabra más hermosa del español. Al menos según los 33.000 internautas que votaron -en conmemoración del Día E- su palabra favorita entre las propuestas de una treintena de personalidades. Desde poetas como Antonio Gamoneda, que propuso la palabra Tú; hasta personajes del mundo del deporte como Diego Forlán o Pau Gasol, que eligieron Solidaridad y Belleza, respectivamente. ZL Zapatero Leaves Nearly eight years after coming to power as the acclaimed new leader of the left, the prime minister now faces, visibly withering, the autumn of his mandate.

The decor is part of the scene.

Against a grey wall, without much in the way of decoration, the workmen at La Moncloa (the Spanish premier’s official residence) set up a large table; a dark base in tune with the current economic situation. Around the large black table sit the most successful businessmen in Spain, called together urgently by the man who arrived in the post of prime minister promising the country’s youth that he would not fail them and that power would not change him.

In front of dozens of photographers and television cameras, Zapatero had a defeated look, with bags under his eyes. It was not only because of the poll ratings of his management of a severe crisis, but also for the confirmation that even among the rank and file of his party, the PSOE (Socialists), they were starting to look beyond him, as if they were looking at the traitor in the team. Flanked by the two heavyweights in his government, the now candidate to succeed him as premier, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, and the Minister of Economy, Elena Salgado, he tried to face up to the questions about new adjustments to fix a situation that has left five million people unemployed on the country’s streets. Zapatero tried hard to cover up his exhaustion after seven years of power that is now fading away.

“He had the look of an anguished person, the stamp of someone who has decided to put his destiny in the hands of those who never helped him. He is living an agonizing and very hard time,” says an historic Socialist militant from the city of Leon who has known the still prime minister of Spain since his days of studying law. “He doesn’t surrender easily in the face of adversity, and he’s not lying when he calls for collaboration from all the employers and unions, and especially from a (main)

Or perhaps it was one thing to fly in the face of Emperor Bush, withdrawing Spanish troops from Iraq, and of Pope John Paul II, by pushing for gay marriages, but quite another to stand up to the IMF and the risk of international intervention in the national economy. A few weeks back, in an eloquent analysis, the former Director General of International Information to the premier (between 2004 and 2006), Javier Valenzuela, pointed to Zapatero as only “liking to be photographed in the company of businessmen and bankers, and opening up a gap in the meetings of conservative politicians and international financial predators like DSK (Dominique Strauss-Kahn)”.

Flanqueado por sus dos pesos pesados del Gobierno, el hoy candidato a sucederle al frente del Ejecutivo, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, y la ministra de Economía, Elena Salgado, trataba de encarar las preguntas sobre nuevos ajustes contra una situación que ha dejado cinco millones de parados por las calles del país. Zapatero se esforzaba por maquillar su agotamiento tras siete años en un poder que ahora se marchita.

“Era la imagen de una persona angustiada, la estampa de alguien que decide poner su destino en manos de quienes nunca le ayudaron. Vive un momento agónico y muy duro”, afirma un histórico militante socialista leonés que conoce bien al todavía presidente del Gobierno de España desde su época de estudiante de Derecho. “No se rinde con facilidad ante las adversidades y no miente cuando pide colaboración a todos los agentes sociales, especialmente al partido de la oposición que no está jugando limpio”, añade antes de declinar revelar su nombre. Pero el noqueado Zapatero, como le llamó el diario francés Le Monde en un reciente editorial, no ha conseguido revitalizar el sistema financiero español.

Hace unas semanas, en un elocuente análisis, el ex Director General de Información Internacional del Presidente entre 2004 y 2006, Javier Valenzuela, señalaba que a Zapatero sólo le “gusta fotografiarse en compañía de empresarios y banqueros, y abrirse un hueco en reuniones de políticos conservadores y financieros rapaces internacionales como DSK (Dominique Strauss-Kahn)”.

El “tiempo” al que se refiere no son las próximas elecciones generales que José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero adelantará al 20 de noviembre. Ni siquiera su referéndum del 15 de octubre. Su tiempo es un término que usan para hablar del “cambio real” de un sistema electoral y un sistema económico que para ellos es absolutamente irreal e injusto. Ellos representan ahora algo más que una advertencia que los políticos en ambos extremos no parecen haber captado en el rush final de esta legislatura. Ahora preparan un otoño caliente. Para el 15 de octubre hay programado un referéndum nacional sobre cuestiones como un modelo económico sostenible, una ley electoral más representativa que la actualmente en vigor, y una mayor participación ciudadana en el diseño de políticas hasta ahora reservadas a expertos sin rostro. “La idea es revelar el sentir de una parte importante de la sociedad sobre asuntos que consideramos necesario modificar y, de paso, mostrar que montar una consulta ni es caro ni complejo”, asegura uno de los organizadores.

I T’S IMPOSSIBLE TO UNDERSTAND Spanish cinema over the last two decades without the figure of Javier Fesser (born Madrid, 1964). Now, after the hangover of the media frenzy over Camino (you know the one, various Goya awards, big box office and controversial), the Madrid scriptwriter and director can breath easier. We found him working on his next project, a new version of Mortadelo y Filemón, a franchise from Spanish artist Francisco Ibáñez that he previously gave life to in 2003. In between came his incursion into literature with Los días de colores, (The Days of Colours), a novel that he gave his name to along with fellow scriptwriter Claro García, inspired by the actual story of Camino. And all this without putting aside the production of commercials, the starting point of his cinema career and a media in which he has also managed to leave his mark. He managed to find a space in his diary for the photo session, while the interview was carried out a few days later via email, courtesy of modern times. At least he didn’t take long in replying.

"TO MAKE A SERIES? Of course.

I like to do a lot of things… (he’s also learning to cook and to sail, not just filming). A TV series is a very attractive format but the tyranny of an immediate audience not so. What’s more I get very nervous when on the plan that you have worked on so carefully down to the smallest detail appears the overprinting of a promotion for beer or holidays in the Caribbean.

I also take the commercial breaks badly, and that’s from somebody who likes good ads."

"I LOVE TO THINK that all that I do has details with which people can recognize me. I suppose it’s the result of not having tried to copy anybody, of not seeking originality for originality’s sake, and for having chosen to make my own mistakes. I’m very grateful for my self-taught training which has consisted, neither more nor less, in having picked up on all the interesting things already done by others and having mixed and connected them in my own way."

"I’M MORE INTERESTED in recycling than creating from scratch.

I see imagination as the capacity to connect things that beforehand have nothing to do with each other, more than the art of inventing everything. Tinto), for example, was a SEAT 600 in miniature and the extraterrestrials detector, a coffee pot fixed to a light meter from the 1950s."

Ahora, tras la resaca mediática de Camino (ya saben, varios Goyas, taquillazo y polémica), el guionista y realizador madrileño respira tranquilo. Le pillamos trabajando en su siguiente proyecto, una nueva entrega de Mortadelo y Filemón, franquicia del dibujante español Francisco Ibáñez que ya revitalizó en 2003. Entre medias, su incursión en la literatura con Los días de colores, novela que firma junto al también guionista Claro García, inspirada por la propia historia de Camino. Y todo eso sin dejar de lado la realización publicitaria, punto de partida de su carrera cinematográfica y soporte donde también ha logrado dejar su huella. Consigue hacer un hueco en su agenda para la sesión de fotos; la entrevista se hace días más tarde por email, bondades de los tiempos modernos. Al menos, tarda poco en contestar. "¿HACER SERIES? Claro que sí.

Me apetece hacer tantas cosas… (también aprender a cocinar y a navegar, no solo rodar). La serie televisiva es un formato muy atractivo pero la dictadura de la audiencia inmediata no. Además me pongo muy nervioso cuando sobre un plano que te has currado con mimo hasta el último detalle aparece una sobreimpresión con una promoción de cerveza o de viajes al Caribe. También

lo de los cortes publicitarios lo llevo mal, y mira que los anuncios buenos me gustan”.

Supongo que es la consecuencia de no haber pretendido copiar a nadie, de no buscar la originalidad por la originalidad y de haber elegido equivocarme yo solito. W ITH CAMINO THEY CHANGED the rules of the game. It was clear that Fesser also knew how to make serious films. And how.

The film collected innumerable awards, was hailed as the major winner at the Premios Goya awards in 2009 and became one of those rare jewels that one stumbles open once in a lifetime.

The story shook a radical sector of the church in their seats and showed to the world the chilling limits of religion. Opus Dei and the family of Alexia GonzálezBarros (the girl who inspired the story) charged in against the film and against Javier, who grew tired of telling in dozens of interviews that the story related the adventures of a girl who for the first and last time faced up to the two most ineffable times of life, love and death. What’s clear is that not everybody got the message.

"I FILMED CAMINO when I considered that I was mature enough to make full use of such a powerful and inspiring story.

All films are difficult to make and this one had a style on which I’d worked little. But that was one of the main incentives. Also, seeing the story so precisely and clearly helped me quite a lot in taking the 250 decisions a day that one has to when making a full-length film."

"I HAVE ESTABLISHED something: when you touch on the subject of religion, the faith, or you mention God, it seems that you need a special license.

In Camino, for example, there’s the description of an unforgivable cloud of medical negligence. Yet still there’s been no professional from the field of medicine who has interpreted that as being an insult to all the doctors and nurses of the world. However, when a character as well as being disagreeable is a priest, it’s taken for granted that the author – a recalcitrant atheist, without doubt – is slagging off God and all those who believe in him. The reality is that Camino pleased many normal believers and caused discomfort to the fanatics who occupy opulent offices in the Vatican and on the boards of some big banks. Strangely, it’s the latter who best understood it. Basically, it’s a story that absolves God of all the barbarities and senseless things that Opus Dei or any other extremist religious sect want to attribute to him with impunity."

"WRITING ON YOUR OWN is hard. It is a long process, full of doubts that are difficult for one to resolve if one is not stuck in the mire of the script right up to your waist. But there are stories that, as happened to me with Camino, require this intimacy. When the foundations of a story are based more on humour it’s a good idea to have a partner. And a good one at that. With Guillermo [his brother, writter and journalist] it’s always been pleasant and the stories I have written with him have always gained a lot for that.

I believe humour is a natural form of expression in my family. It’s the means, not the end."

"WHAT NEED IS THERE for a ranking? In every era there have been unique directors, how ever many there are. The reality is that our generation would be nothing without the talent of the previous ones. I like to think that those to come will also learn something from our films. I got to know Jacques Tati through the films of Jean Pierre Jeunet."

F UE CAMINO LA QUE ABRIÓ los ojos al cine español. Era obvio que Fesser también sabía hacer películas serias. Y de qué forma.

La cinta cosechó innumerables premios, se coronó como la gran triunfadora de los Premios Goya de 2009 y se convirtió en una de esas raras joyas con las que te topas una vez en la vida. La historia revolvió de su asiento a un sector radical de la Iglesia y mostró al mundo los escalofriantes límites de la religión. El Opus Dei y la propia familia de Alexia González-Barros (la niña que inspiró la historia) cargaron contra la película y contra Javier, que se hartó de decir en decenas de entrevistas que su historia contaba la aventura de una niña que se enfrente por primera y última vez a las dos estaciones más inefables de la vida, el amor y la muerte. Está claro que no todos pillaron el mensaje.

"RODÉ CAMINO cuando consideré

que tenía la madurez necesaria para no desaprovechar una historia tan poderosa y tan inspiradora. Todas las películas son difíciles de rodar y ésta tenía un tono en el que yo me había manejado poco. Pero eso era uno de los principales alicientes. También el tener la historia tan nítidamente clara me ayudó bastante a tomar las 250 decisiones diarias que uno ha de tomar cuando rueda un largometraje”.

"HE CONSTATADO ALGO: cuando

tocas el tema de la religión, la fe o mencionas a Dios, parece que necesitas un permiso especial.

En Camino se describe, por ejemplo, un cúmulo imperdonable de negligencias médicas y todavía no ha surgido el profesional de la medicina que haya interpretado eso como un insulto a todos los médicos y enfermeras del mundo. Sin embargo, cuando un personaje además de antipático es sacerdote, ya se da por hecho que el autor, ateo recalcitrante sin duda, está poniendo a caer de un burro a Dios y a todos los que en él creen. La realidad es que Camino agradó mucho a los creyentes de a pie e incomodó a los fanáticos que ocupan opulentos despachos en el Vaticano y en los consejos de administración de algunos grandes bancos.

Curiosamente éstos segundos son los que mejor la entendieron. En el fondo, es una historia que exculpa a Dios de toda la barbaridad y el sin sentido que el Opus Dei o cualquier secta de extremismo religioso quieren impunemente atribuirle”.

"ESCRIBIR EN SOLEDAD es duro.

Es un proceso largo y lleno de dudas que difícilmente te puede resolver quien no esté metido en el fango del guión hasta la cintura. Pero hay historias que, como me ocurrió en Camino, requieren esa intimidad. Cuando las historias basan más sus cimientos en el humor es muy recomendable estar acompañado. Bien acompañado, incluso. Con Guillermo siempre ha sido placentero y las historias que he escrito junto a él lo han agradecido muchísimo.

Creo que el humor es una forma natural de expresión en mi familia. Es el medio, no el fin”. " ¿QUÉ NECESIDAD HAY de establecer un ranking? En todas las épocas ha habido directores irrepetibles, da igual la cantidad. La realidad es que nuestra generación no sería nada sin el talento de las anteriores y me gusta pensar que las que están por venir algo aprenderán también de nuestras películas. Yo conocí a Jacques Tati a través de las películas de Jean Pierre Jeunet”.

C APABLE OF TURNING HIS debut film El Milagro de P. Tinto, (The Miracle of P. Tinto) into a cult movie; and of filming a short for UNICEF depicting the reality facing Senegalese girls and being nominated for an Oscar, I don’t believe Fesser has ever been bored in his life. His own surrealist imagination is peopled by sassy Martians, an eternal and unbreakable gas cylinder, a private investigator of electrical household appliances. A universe of pop-folklore sub-culture that many call the Fesser style. The hyperactive filmmaker has accepted the challenge and has established himself as one of those storytellers it is best not to lose track of.

If Hollywood has J.J. Abrams and France Jean Pierre Jeunet, we have our Mr Petinto. I mean to say, Fesser.

"I LIKE ANY FILM that doesn’t take the spectator to be an imbecile. And I am especially pleased by those that don’t try to shock me. And, above all, I love those of the Coens and all those that come from the Pixar Factory.

From time to time I come across a film capable of thrilling me.

Toy Story 3 was the last one."

"LITERATURE ALLOWS US to abandon the mathematical tyranny of the pace of filming.

The reader not only doesn’t look

at his watch every half an hour as the spectator does, he also enjoys being taken off at a tangent. Because it is precisely the “branching out” in the Camino that have fed the novel with emotion. All that was small in the film, anecdotal or tangential, now gains prominence for developing in depth that parallel universe in the Camino that is very similar to our own yet, little by little, seems like pure science fiction."

"FILM IS MORE UNIVERSAL the more local it is. I’m sure about that. When an author talks about what he knows about deeply, it usually results in a work in which that knowledge can be shared in an attractive way. Thanks to films I have been able to put myself in the shoes of a desperate Iraqi mother, of a violent adolescent from Guatemala, of a political prisoner in Angola and a misunderstood gay cowboy in deepest America. On the other hand, when a film is created for an international audience, to be sold in all markets, it’s not easy for it to go beyond the level of entertainment."

"COMICS HAVE BEEN a magnificent school for telling stories with pictures for many generations of Spaniards. And they have also been a very intelligent and always humorous portrait of our virtues and miseries."

Su peculiar imaginario surrealista está poblado por marcianos caraduras, una bombona de butano eterna e irrompible, un investigador privado de electrodomésticos… un universo de subcultura popcañí que muchos llaman estilo Fesser. El hiperactivo cineasta ha aceptado el reto y se erige como uno de esos fabuladores a los que es mejor no perder la pista. Si Hollywood tiene a J.J. Abrams y Francia a Jean Pierre Jeunet, nosotros tenemos al señor Petinto. Digo, Fesser.

Todo aquello que en la película era pequeño, anecdótico o tangencial, cobra ahora protagonismo para desarrollar en profundidad ese universo paralelo de Camino que es muy parecido al nuestro pero que, por momentos, parece pura ciencia ficción”.

ID ATLANTIS REALLY EXIST? And if so, where was it? To reply to these two questions would, without any doubt, explain one of the greatest enigmas of history. And there have been plenty of theories drawn up since the middle of the 19th century, when finding the mythical lost civilization spoken about by Plato in his works Timaeus and Critias almost became an obsession for various archaeologists and adventurers. They range from those that believed blindly in its existence and situated it on the Greek island of Santorini, to those who sustain that what Plato said was nothing more than a legend, a story created by the philosopher with didactic intentions, which is why he didn’t bother himself in giving it any geographical location, passing over one considered to be “proved,” that the people of Atlantis abandoned our planet in search of better worlds and mentions the high Andean plateau of Bolivia as the most probable site for the continent that disappeared.

Nobody knows how much could be true, scientifically speaking, in the different hypotheses that have been put forward, although the general feeling among experts is one of total scepticism. Until now mankind knows only one thing for certain: the mention of Atlantis by Plato.

At the moment, it’s in the south of Spain, and more precisely in the Doñana national park, where all those who in one way or another have shown interest in the search for Atlantis have set their sights. It’s there where

a professor from the University of Hartford (Connecticut), Richard Freund, using as a base hypotheses from the works of various authors, (and especially that of the German Reiner Kühne) maintains that he has found proof to conclude that this is where Atlantis is.

THE RESEARCH An international team of researchers led

by Freund, which has the backing of the National Geographic Channel, has for some time been carrying out fieldwork, trying to determine what would be the exact position of the remains of the city of Atlantis, a city that they claim is to be found buried beneath the salt marshes of Doñana. To carry out

their work they have been able to count on the latest technologies available, including photographs taken from satellites, radars capable of penetrating down into the subsoil, digital cartography, archaeological explorations, aerial photos taken from different altitudes, extractions of geological samples and underwater drilling and archaeology.

The results of their work have been seen in a documentary from the National Geographic Channel. This tells in detail the procedures that have been followed and how these have led them to identify a circular structure composed of a series of concentric rings that correspond exactly with what was written by Plato about the shape in which Atlantis was designed.

XISTIÓ REALMENTE LA ATLÁNTIDA? Y si así fue, ¿dónde estaba situada? Responder a estas dos preguntas supondría desvelar uno de los mayores enigmas de la Historia, sin duda alguna. Y no son pocas las teorías elaboradas al respecto desde mediados del siglo XIX, cuando encontrar la mítica civilización perdida de la que hablara Platón en sus Timeo y Critias se convirtiera en casi una obsesión para arqueólogos y aventureros varios: desde aquella que cree ciegamente en su existencia y la sitúa en la isla griega de Santorini, hasta la que sostiene que lo relatado por Platón no es más que un mito, una historia creada por el filósofo con intenciones didácticas, y que no se molesta por tanto en dar ubicación geográfica alguna, pasando por la que considera “probado” que los atlantes abandonaron nuestro planeta en busca de mundos mejores y menciona el altiplano boliviano como emplazamiento más probable del continente desaparecido…

Nadie sabe cuánto puede haber de cierto, científicamente hablando, en las diferentes hipótesis planteadas por unos y por otros, aunque el sentir generalizado entre los expertos es de total escepticismo.

Hasta el momento el hombre sólo tiene una certeza: la mención de la Atlántida por parte de Platón.

En la actualidad, es en el sur de España y más concretamente en el Parque Na-

LA INVESTIGACIÓN Un equipo internacional de investigadores dirigido por el propio Freund y que ha contado con el respaldo de National Geographic Channel lleva tiempo realizando un trabajo de campo tratando de determinar la que sería la posición exacta de los restos de la ciudad de la Atlántida que, según defienden, se halla enterrada bajo las marismas de Doñana. Han podido contar para llevar a cabo su trabajo con las tecnologías más avanzadas de las que han podido disponer, incluyendo fotografías obtenidas de satélites, radares capaces de penetrar hasta el subsuelo, cartografía digital, prospecciones arqueológicas, fotografías aéreas desde diferentes alturas, extracciones de muestras geológicas y de perforación y arqueología submarina.

Algunos habitantes habrían podido buscar refugio en tierra firme, según la teoría de este equipo de científicos, y construir una ciudad de semejante estructura a la arrasada por las fuerzas de la naturaleza que sería la ahora descubierta bajo las marismas de Doñana… En palabras del propio profesor Freund, el lugar identificado en pleno Parque Nacional, accesible solamente durante un mes durante el verano, “es el mejor candidato posible nunca descubierto con la mayor cantidad de evidencias a su favor” en comparación a otras localizaciones sucesivamente propuestas como las definitivas a lo largo y ancho del mundo.

Luis Alfonso Gámez, periodista especialista en ciencia del diario bilbaíno El Correo Vasco y escéptico convencido, considera posible la existencia de restos en el área del Parque de la que se habla pero contradice la teoría del profesor Freund al asegurar que estos restos no llegaron a pertenecer al mito de la Atlántida. “No es que no haya nada en la marisma de Doñana, puede haber algo, pero desde luego no es la Atlántida, porque encontrar la Atlántida sería como encontrar el país de Nunca Jamás, o Kriptón o el país de Oz. Todo esto son inventos humanos, leyendas maravillosas, muy bonitas. De la Atlántida lle-

El resultado de su trabajo ha podido verse en un documental del propio Nacional Geographic Channel en el que se relata con detalle el procedimiento seguido y cómo éste les condujo a identificar una estructura circular compuesta por una serie de anillos concéntricos que concuerda exactamente con lo escrito por Platón en cuanto a la forma en que estaba diseñada la Atlántida. En el documental se explica también que la causa de su destrucción y desaparición pudo ser un brutal tsunami que avanzó casi cien kilómetros tierra adentro.

HE DOCUMENTARY ALSO EXPLAINS that the cause of its destruction and disappearance could have been a brutal tsunami that flooded almost 100 kilometres inland. Some inhabitants would have been able to seek refuge on terra firma, according to the theory of this team of scientists, and build a city of similar structure to the one leveled by the forces of nature, that would be the one now discovered under the salt marshes of Doñana… In the words of Professor Freund, the spot identified in the interior of the national park, accessible only for a month in summer, “is the best possible candidate ever discovered, with the greatest quantity of evidence in support of it” when compared with other locations that have been successively put forward as the definitive ones the length and breadth of the world.

Luis Alfonso Gámez, a journalist who specializes in science at the Bilbao daily El Correo Vasco and a convinced sceptic, considers it possible that there are remains in the area of the park that is being talked about. But he contradicts the theory of Professor Freund, maintaining that the remains are not part of the legend of Atlantis. “It is not a case of there being nothing in the salt marshes of Doñana.

There could be something, but for certain it’s not Atlantis, because finding Atlantis would be like finding Never Never Land, or Krypton, or the Land of Oz. All these are human inventions, marvelous legends, and very nice. People have

been speaking of Atlantis for 2,500 years, and on top of that there are no religions behind the myth, no church behind it all. The legend is very powerful, but in the end it’s nothing more than that, a myth. In the era in which Plato set the story there was no civilization in the world, not in the Mediterranean or in any other place.

What there were were hunters-gatherers. There were no domesticated animals, no agriculture”, he says, convinced, he who is also a consulting member of the Committee for Sceptical Research (CSI).

Both Timaeus and Critias form part of what are considered to be authentic Plato dialogues. It is believed they could have been compiled in the period between 366 and 360 BC. Or, what amounts to the same, between the two voyages that the author made to the island of Sicily. Athens lost much of its power in this era, burdened as it was by the consequences of the Peloponnesian War. That power had displaced towards the old Greek trading colonies of Italy and Sicily, although fortunately for the citizens of Athens their well won cultural prestige remained intact (Plato and Aristotle lived in this Athens that was politically on the way down).

It’s important to take this piece of information into account when it comes to evaluating how much could be true in what was told by Plato about Atlantis, whose legend is only outlined in Timaeus. The main purpose of it was to extol Athens, which, unlike other cities more or less near it, had resisted an assault from the ships of the powerful civilization of Atlantis.

ideal society should be, perfectly structured and one in which order and justice prevail. It also refers to the site of the island, to the extension of its domains. To the already mentioned Athenian victory over Atlantis and, of course, the way in which such a powerful civilization disappeared under the sea.

THE CITY OF ATLANTIS Solon, who made a long journey around Egypt, received all the information – which he later shared with Dropidas- from some priests who explained to him that the history of the legendary civilization dated back to the beginning of time when the gods reigned over the Earth and divided the world so that each of them governed their own dominions.

Poseidon, the god of the sea, received the island that he called Atlantis. He chose a mortal woman, Clito, and started a dynasty of kings who governed for centuries. They had five pairs of twins and each of them was given a kingdom. The eldest of them, Atlas, was given the city that carried his name and that would have power over the other nine. In this way, he was told, was founded the city of Atlantis, within the continent that carried his name.

Atlantis had plenty of resources: water, all types of minerals, especially orichalcum, or mountain copper, more highly valued than gold by the Atlanteans and used for different religious practices. Great forests provided them with huge quantities of wood and all types of animals and vegetables. Such natural riches allowed the Atlanteans to build a splen-

ANTO EL TIMEO COMO EL CRITIAS forman parte de los diálogos platónicos considerados auténticos, y se cree que pudieron ser compilados en un periodo comprendido entre los años 366 y 360 a. C. O lo que es lo mismo, entre los dos viajes que su autor realizase a la isla de Sicilia. Atenas había perdido en esa época gran parte de su poder, lastrada por las consecuencias de la Guerra del Peloponeso, y ese poder se había ido desplazando hacia las antiguas colonias comerciales griegas de Italia y Sicilia, aunque por fortuna para los ciudadanos atenienses su bien ganado prestigio cultural permaneció intacto (Platón y Aristóteles vivieron en esa Atenas venida políticamente a menos).

Es importante tener este dato en cuenta a la hora de valorar cuánto puede haber de cierto en lo relatado por Platón acerca de la Atlántida, cuyo mito es únicamente esbozado en el Timeo, y cuyo propósito principal era el de ensalzar a la Atenas que, al contrario que otras ciudades más o menos próximas, había resistido el asalto de las naves de la poderosa civilización atlante. Platón pone el relato en boca de Critias, quien utilizando la información que le facilitara Drópidas -bisabuelo de Platónque a su vez había escuchado la historia de boca de Solón, que la había recibido supuestamente de unos sacerdotes egipcios de la ciudad de Sais, habla de la Atlántida

LA CIUDAD DE ATLÁNTIDA Solón, que realizó un largo viaje por Egipto, recibió toda la información -que más tarde compartió con Drópidas- de unos sacerdotes que fueron quienes le explicaron que la historia de la mítica civilización se remontaba al principio de los tiempos, cuando los dioses reinaban sobre la tierra y se dividieron el mundo para que cada uno de ellos gobernase sus dominios. Poseidón, el dios del mar, recibió la isla que llamó Atlántida, eligió a una mujer mortal, Clito, y comenzó una dinastía de reyes que gobernarían durante siglos. Tuvieron cinco pares de gemelos y a cada uno le dio un reino. Al mayor de ellos, Atlas le dio la ciudad que llevaba su nombre y que tendría poder sobre las otras nueve. Así, le contaron, se fundó la ciudad de Atlántida, dentro del continente que llevaba su mismo nombre.

La Atlántida tenía recursos en abundancia: agua, toda clase de minerales, destacando el oricalco o cobre de montaña, más valorado que el oro por los atlantes y

utilizado para distintas prácticas religiosas, grandes bosques que proporcionaban madera en ingentes cantidades y toda clase de animales y vegetales. Semejantes riquezas naturales permitieron a los atlantes la construcción de una espléndida acrópolis repleta de edificios notables entre los que destacaban un palacio real y un templo dedicado a Poseidón.

Construyeron también un gran canal para comunicar la costa con el anillo de agua exterior que rodeaba la metrópolis, y otro menor y cubierto para conectar éste anillo exterior con la ciudadela. Una sucesión de torres y puertas permitía que nada escapara a los ojos de quienes se encargaban de la vigilancia de todo el perímetro.

El diálogo inacabado Critias, concebido probablemente como continuación del Timeo, amplía los datos anteriormente expuestos, todos ellos facilitados por Solón, acerca de aquella guerra acaecida 8000 años antes entre Atenas y la Atlántida. El texto se centra en esta continuación en la historia, geografía y gobierno de la Atlántida, quedando interrumpido en el preciso momento en que los dioses, indignados por el comportamiento inmoral de los habitantes del imperio atlante, se disponen a castigarlos de un modo atroz, con el hundimiento de la isla principal, provocando su completa desaparición de la faz de la tierra.

ries there were many who, in the ancient world, gave credit to what Plato said. In this way, Strabo, Posidonius, Pliny the Elder and Plutarch took Plato’s narration as the truth, contributing with their own opinions and writings in enlarging the legend…So, will the remains of the old civilization of Atlantis be so near to us?

Have those that are really searching for it hit it this time? The investigations by Freund’s team have been harshly criticized by different sectors of the scientific community. Historians and archaeologists are sceptical and still consider the accounts of Plato to be a legend that emerged from the imagination of the Greek teacher and were used by him as an excuse or example to explain his ideal model for society. They maintain that the work carried out in Doñana lacks credibility from the historical-literary, geological, paleogeographic and archaeological points of view.

CHAIN OF TOWERS AND GATES meant that nothing escaped the eyes of those in charge of monitoring the entire perimeter.

The unfinished dialogue of Critias, probably envisaged as a continuation of Timaeus, expands on the previous data, all of which was provided by Solon, about the war that occurred 8,000 years before between Athens and Atlantis. The text centres on this continuation of the history, geography and government of Atlantis, interrupted at the precise moment at which the gods, indignant about the immoral behaviour of the inhabitants of the empire of Atlantis, decide to castigate them in an atrocious way; the sinking of the main island, bringing about its total disappearance from the face of the earth.

For the great majority of the thinkers of the ancient world both texts were true to life narrations, remnants and notes of a story based on real events.

Manuel Pimentel, a former politician who was Minister of Labour, now a businessman and successful writer, thinks that if there really had been an Atlantis, “we would be talking of an advanced civilization in comparison with its contemporaries, which would signify that there were civilizations using metals before they were believed to have done so”.

notes about absolutely everything. There is nothing, not even a reference to Atlantis, and that is because it existed only in Plato’s head”.

In spite of all this, there are thousands of enthusiasts who are convinced that sooner or later man will come across the lost continent.

Pimentel says that “any rigorous archaeological investigation looks good to me, and if they apply science to carr y it out, then better still. What happens in Spain is that we have a feeling of shame. To think that Atlantis could be here makes us ashamed and it seems to us that it is not serious enough for science to take notice of it.

I, nevertheless, believe that it’s good to investigate all things with scientific methodology. There are many reasons for thinking that the most realistic possibility of the many that have been considered, and the one most adapted to the texts of Plato, is in the south of Andalucia. That is not only because it’s a little beyond the Pillars of Hercules, but also for the example of the abundance of metal, of orichalcum, which could be the copper or the bronze that are so common in the Sierra Morena mountains. Who knows whether this search will be the successful one, and whether from here on we can say at last that it was not just a myth in Plato’s head, and that we now know where Atlantis was.

Manuel Pimentel, ex político que fuera ministro de trabajo y empresario y escritor de éxito en la actualidad, considera que de haber existido realmente la Atlántida, “estaríamos hablando de una civilización avanzada en comparación a sus contemporáneas, lo que significaría que hubo civilizaciones que emplearon el metal antes de lo que se creía”.

A lo largo de los siglos posteriores fueron muchos quienes, en el mundo antiguo, dieron crédito a lo relatado por Platón. Así, Estrabón, Posidonio, Plinio el viejo o Plutarco tomaron la narración platónica como verdadera, contribuyendo con sus propias opiniones y escritos a engrandecer la leyenda… ¿Estarán, pues, los restos de la vieja civilización atlante tan cerca de nosotros? ¿Habrán dado esta vez quienes la buscan realmente con ella?

La investigación del equipo de Freund ha sido duramente criticada desde distintos sectores de la comunidad científica; historiadores y arqueólogos se muestran escépticos y no dejan de considerar la narración platónica una leyenda, surgida de la imaginación del maestro griego y utilizada por él como excusa o ejemplo para

quier investigación arqueológica rigurosa me parece muy bien, y si se aplica la ciencia para llevarla a cabo pues todavía mejor. En España lo que pasa es que tenemos un sentimiento vergonzante, y pensar que la Atlántida pueda estar aquí nos da vergüenza y nos parece que no es algo lo suficientemente serio como para que la ciencia pueda ocuparse de ello.

Yo sin embargo creo que con el método científico es bueno que se investigue todo. Hay muchísimos motivos para pensar que la posibilidad más realista y más adaptada a los textos de Platón, de cuantas se han barajado, es la del sur de Andalucía, no solamente porque esté un poco mas allá de las columnas de Hércules, sino también, por ejemplo, por la abundancia del metal, del oricalco, que

pudo ser el cobre o el bronce tan presentes en Sierra Morena. ¿Puede estar la Atlántida en Doñana?. La magia de la arqueología puede hacerlo todo posible”.

Quién sabe si no será esta búsqueda la buena, y de aquí a algún tiempo podremos al fin decir que el mito no existió solamente en la cabeza de Platón, y que ya sabemos dónde estaba la Atlántida.

T HE SIMULATED REALITY that Tania Blanco (born in Valencia, 1978) pushes us towards is a mirrorthat reflects her. The artist from Valencia has created an aseptic universe where nothing is what it seems to be.

Populated by a disquieting technical imagination, it embraces a fierce proximity to hyper-reality that science and an abusive, increasingly technical world have helped to create. “It’s something that disturbs me and that draws us ever closer to a sort of dystopía. As a consequence I have a love - hate relationship with the medical scientific ecosystem.

That emotional ambiguity has ended up flowering in a large number of works, that also keep on growing organically, sometimes in a more controlled way and at other times escaping from my control. I like the relationship with the unexpected, as well as building up networks of new connections between the works.” Painter, sculptor, photographer, an installations artist… interdisciplinarity is one of the characteristics of the unclassifiable work of this woman from Valencia and her identity mark, as happens with many contemporary artists. “I feel comfortable with all facets. It’s difficult for me to take on a project without thinking beforehand about the orchestration of the elements in the space.

However, I have to admit that painting is my main tool of expression and for giving battle, and it is present in one way or another in nearly everything, as much in the installations as with objects or with photography. I believe that if there is something that characterizes contemporary art it is precisely those blurred borders when you are referring to disciplines”.

Her artistic discourse becomes a stratagem that is more exact than reality itself. Beneath a coat of apparent truth hides a whole hyperrealist declaration of principles. “At a technical level I don’t reach an absolute verisimilitude, and I’m not looking for it; many resources and ‘tricks’ are of value to me as far as formal representation goes. At a certain distance it may appear thorough and detailed, but close up one can appreciate the total simplification of the forms, great masses of colour with suave corruptions and some details that end up defining shape and volume.

Reality is full of irregularities, stains, imperfections, and chromatic nuances… In my works I deliberately omit the physical texture of reality. This asepticism leads conceptually towards the same themes that I am trying for in my images, and I am always looking for a form and content that go hand in hand”. So, does the dream of technology produce monsters? “I have many doubts about scientífic and tecnological development. And that uneasiness is the starting point for elaborating new conceptual and formal ideas.

A REALIDAD SIMULADA a la que nos empuja Tania Blanco (Valencia, 1978) es un espejo que se refleja a sí mismo. La artista valenciana ha creado un aséptico universo donde nada es lo que parece. Poblado por un inquietante imaginario técnico, abraza una feroz aproximación a la hiperrealidad que la ciencia y la tecnificación abusiva del mundo han contribuido a crear. “Es algo que me inquieta y que nos acerca cada vez más a una especie de distopía Orwelliana. Como consecuencia siento una atracción-rechazo hacia el ecosistema médico-científico.

Esa ambigüedad emocional ha acabado por aflorar en un gran número de trabajos, que van creciendo orgánicamente también, a veces de una forma más controlada y otras veces escapando a mi control. Me gusta la relación con lo inesperado así como construir redes de nuevas conexiones entre las obras”. Pintora, escultora, fotógrafa, artista de instalaciones… la interdisciplinariedad es una de las características de la inclasificable obra de la valenciana y una seña de identidad, como ocurre con muchos artistas contemporáneos. “Me siento cómoda en con todas las facetas. Me resulta difícil abordar un proyecto sin pensar previamente en la orquestación de los elementos en el espacio, aunque sí he de admitir que la pintura es mi herramienta principal de expresión y batalla, y está presente de un modo u otro prácticamente en todo, tanto en las instalaciones, como en los objetos o en la fotografía. Creo que si algo caracteriza al arte contemporáneo es precisamente esas fronteras desdibujadas en cuanto a disciplinas se refiere”.

Su discurso artístico se convierte en un artificio más cierto que la propia realidad. Bajo una capa de aparente verdad, se esconde toda una hiperrealista declaración de principios. “A nivel técnico no logro una verosimilitud absoluta, y tampoco la busco; me valgo de muchos recursos y ‘trampas’ en cuanto a representación formal se refiere. A cierta distancia puede aparentar minuciosa y detallada, pero de cerca se aprecia la simplificación total de la forma, grandes masas de color con suaves degradados y algunas detalles que acaban definiendo forma y volumen. La realidad está llena de irregularidades, manchas, imperfecciones, matices cromáticos… en mis obras omito deliberadamente la textura física de la realidad. Esta asepsia conduce conceptualmente hacia los mismos temas que trato en las imágenes y siempre busco que forma y contenido vayan de la mano”. Entonces, ¿el sueño de la tecnología produce monstruos? “Tengo muchas dudas con respecto al desarrollo científico y tecnológico, y esa inquietud es precisamente el punto de arranque para elaborar nuevos planteamientos conceptuales y formales.

I BELIEVE THE GROWTH OF TECHNOLOGY in society brings with it many transformations in social blueprints, that it has altered and established new values and radicalized a crude materialism. On one hand technology makes life easier for us, but it also has a more sinister side…and that is I think that now more than ever technology is a tool for controlling people. If it is a source of knowledge, it is also a powerful weapon with which reality loses all value. I think that scientific and technological development are used by the powers that be, and that the people, under the delusion of advance and common good, are alienated and mediatized, with their perceptions distorted and their capability for critical thought impeded by the apples from the garden of Eden.”

In her series Cell Limbo, Tania brings into practice – making use of the same resources of technology -, her own vision of reality. She recreates imaginary cellular universes with an impactful halo of likelihood, the simulation of the simulation. “Cell Limbo is a photographic series carried out with a very rudimentary technique. In 2008 I started to seek out materials that would allow me to recreate science fiction with a simple 18-42mm lens. Using as a base the observation of minimal and complex structures of a microscope, I reinterpret those codes using a dimension physically visible to the naked eye, without the need for magnifying lenses.

The objective was to recreate unreal microscopic scenes that in reality belong to the land of the real and perceptible to the naked eye without any magnifying lens. Retouching the resulting image would be unnecessary and a contradiction.

It’s strange, but in my photographic work I look to recreate an environment that appears to be fantastic and almost science fiction from a genuine set up, one that is ‘real’. Yet in my painting the reality is always ‘artificial’”.

The sense of beauty and surgical precision that her work gives off shouldn’t be allowed to fool us: the cave of Plato that it passes for has infinite representations. As Baudrillard remarked, talking of simulacra, and later Umberto Eco with their false reality, we run the risk of seeing the simulation of an idea as being something more real than the idea itself.

“I like the formal sharpness and polysemic capability of the images. With the simple action of working on a composition of one or more objects, choosing a concrete fragment or angle of an object, isolating it in an “empty” space, and associating it with another element…one is already generating many questions. I think I tend to construct compositions from fast reading, and that the realism in your representation makes people identify easily with the objects that are represented. However, it is when the different works are spread around the space that the dialogue between them becomes structured, composing a conceptual and complex framework that is far more open to different interpretations”.

Welcome, then, to the simulacra of Tania Blanco.

A TECNIFICACIÓN DE LA SOCIEDAD creo que conlleva muchas transformaciones en el plano social, ha alterado y asentado nuevos valores y radicalizado un crudo materialismo. Por un lado la tecnología nos hace la vida más fácil, pero tiene un lado más siniestro…y es que creo que ahora más que nunca la tecnología es una herramienta de control de la población. Si bien es una fuente de conocimiento también es un arma poderosa en la que la realidad pierde todo su valor. El desarrollo científico y tecnológico creo que está al servicio de los poderes fácticos, y la población, bajo el engaño del avance y del bienestar, es alienada y mediatizada, distorsionando su percepción e impidiendo su capacidad de pensamiento crítico a través de sus manzanas del paraíso”.

En su serie Cell Limbo, Tania lleva a la práctica -valiéndose de los mismos recursos que la tecnología-, su peculiar visión de la realidad. Recrea universos celulares imaginarios con un impactante halo de verosimilitud; el simulacro del simulacro. “Cell Limbo es una serie fotográfica hecha con una técnica muy rudimentaria. En el 2008, empecé a buscar materiales que me permitieran recrear ficciones-científicas con un sencillo objetivo de 18-42mm. Basándome en la observación de las estructuras mínimas y complejas de lo microscópico, reinterpreté esos códigos con una dimensión físicamente visible a simple vista, sin necesidad de lentes de aumento. El objetivo era recrear escenas irreales microscópicas que en realidad pertenecen al terreno de lo real y perceptible a simple vista. Retocar la imagen resultante sería innecesario y un contrasentido. Es curioso, pero en mi obra fotográfica busco recrear un entorno que aparenta fantástico y casi de ciencia ficción a partir de un montaje verídico, ‘real’, y sin embargo en mi obra pictórica la realidad siempre es ‘artificial’”.

La pulcritud y precisión quirúrgica que desprende su trabajo no debe llevarnos a engaño: la caverna de Platón a la que nos hace pasar tiene infinitas representaciones. Como ya advirtió Baudrillard hablando de simulación o posteriormente Umberto Eco con su falsedad auténtica, corremos el riesgo de considerar al simulacro de una idea en algo más real que la propia idea. “Me gusta la nitidez formal y la capacidad polisémica de las imágenes. Con el sencillo hecho de trabajar sobre la composición de un/os objeto/s, elegir un fragmento o un ángulo concreto de un objeto, aislarlo sobre un espacio “vacío”, o asociarlo a otro elemento…ya se genera muchas preguntas. Creo que tiendo a construir composiciones de lectura rápida, y el realismo en su representación hace que se identifiquen fácilmente los objetos representados. Sin embargo, cuando las distintas obras son distribuidas en el espacio es cuando el diálogo entre ellas se estructura, componiendo un entramado conceptual complejo y mucho más abierto a distintas interpretaciones”. Spanish Eureka!

Thirty five million years might seem a lot, but in astronomical terms they are hardly anything.

That is the age of BD+20 1790 b, the youngest planet known so far. A team of researchers from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), led by María Magdalena Hernán, was analyzing the radial speed of a star from the constellation of Gemini when, by chance, they discovered this adolescent planet. Technically, it’s what’s known as a Hot Jupiter, a gassy giant keeping very close orbit with its star. It will allow the analysis of a planetary age that has never been studied before.

Modesto Cubillas was a humble hunter from the region of Cantabria. One day, while walking in the country, his dog diappeared among some crevices. On trying to reach him Modesto discovered the entrance to a huge cave. He spoke about his find to Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, a paleontology enthusiast from the area. On his first visit he didn’t see much of importance in the grotto.

But when he returned with María, his nine year old daughter, the little girl found a series of impressive drawings on the walls. Without knowing it he had found the Sistine Chapel of cave art, the paintings of Altamira.

Treinta y cinco millones de años pueden parecer muchos, pero en términos astronómicos no son apenas nada. Ésa es la edad de BD+20 1790 b, el planeta extrasolar más joven que se conoce hasta el momento. Un equipo de investigadores de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM) dirigido por María Magdalena Hernán, estaba analizando la velocidad radial de una estrella de la constelación de Géminis cuando, por casualidad, descubrió este planeta adolescente.

Técnicamente, se trata un Júpiter Caliente -gigante de gas muy cercano a su estrellaque permitirá el análisis de un rango de edad planetario que nunca había podido estudiarse.

Modesto Cubillas era un humilde cazador cántabro. Un día, paseando por el campo, su perro se perdió entre unas grietas, y al tratar de alcanzarlo Modesto descubrió la entrada a una gran cueva. Le contó su hallazgo a Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola, un aficionado a la paleontología de la zona. Tras su primera visita, éste no le dio mayor importancia a la gruta. Pero cuando regresó con María, su hija de 9 años, la pequeña descubrió una serie de impresionantes dibujos en las paredes. Sin saberlo, había encontrado la Capilla Sixtina del arte rupestre, las pinturas de Altamira.

After several weeks of an agonizingly long journey, from the top of the mast on La Pinta was heard suddenly the awaited warning cry: Land ahoy! It was 1492, the 12th of October.

Christopher Columbus thought he’d arrived at last on the east coast of India. He had set sail from Spain with the aim of discovering new trade routes, and he would die without knowing that the lands he and his crew set foot upon were those of a new continent. The discovery of the Americas, regarded as one of the most important benchmarks in world history, was by mistake. He wasn’t alone, but the later chronicles of pillage are another story.

José Toledo had to video the wedding of Karina, the daughter of some friends of his.

While he was casually testing the camera in the living room of their house he discovered that the infrared rays from the remote control of the television caused interference on the images he recorded. As the owner of a cinema, it occurred to him that the phenomenon could be used as an efficient means of combating piracy, stopping them from illegally copying films. No sooner said than done. José installed some infrared emitters behind the screen in his cinema and patented the Karina Anticopia system, for which the industry in general has shown little enthusiasm.

Tras varias semanas de agónica y larga travesía, en lo alto del mástil de La Pinta se escuchó de repente el aviso esperado: ¡Tierra a la vista! Era 1492, 12 de octubre. Cristóbal Colón creía haber llegando, por fin, a la costa oriental de la India. Había zarpado desde España con la intención de descubrir nuevas rutas comerciales, y aún moriría sin saber que las tierras que había pisado con su tripulación eran las de un nuevo continente. El descubrimiento de América, considerado como uno de los hitos más importantes de la historia universal, fue por error. No fue el único, pero la crónica posterior del expolio es otra historia.

José Toledo tenía que grabar en vídeo la boda de Karina, la hija de unos amigos. Mientras probaba despreocupadamente la cámara en el salón de su casa, descubrió que los rayos infrarrojos del mando del televisor producían interferencias en la imagen grabada. Como era propietario de un cine, se le ocurrió que aquel fenómeno podría convertirse en una eficaz arma contra la piratería, impidiendo la grabación ilegal de las películas. Dicho y hecho. José instaló unos emisores infrarrojos tras la pantalla de su cine y patentó el sistema Karina Anticopia, por el que la industria, en general, ha mostrado un mínimo entusiasmo.

W W ALT DISNEY LANDED IN BRAZIL in 1941. He was accompanied by 18 of his work colleagues: artists, musicians and script writers. For 10 weeks they toured South America, hunting for landscapes, characters, colours and sounds. The adventure was not an innocent one. War was devastating Europe, and the U.S was on the side of the Allies. Nazi propaganda worked efficiently in Latin America.

The United States ought to do something, and President Roosevelt decided that Donald Duck was the perfect antidote to the propaganda of Goebbels. The result of this journey was two cartoon films nominated for Oscars and an artistic treasure trove in the form of sketches, notes, musical scores and Latino inspired characters.

In the spring of 1941, the attack on Pearl Harbor was yet to come, but the U.S entry into the war was reckoned to be imminent. Latin America had come off badly in the stock market crash of ‘29. “Faced with social instability and the advance of communism, repressive governments emerged that tried to rule in a climate of violence. The Latin American countries were polarized between sympathizers of the Allies and the Nazis”, explains Guillermo Pariente, administrator of the blog 2GM (2gmblog.blogspot.com) dedicated to the Second World War. In 1942, at a conference in Río de Janeiro, the foreign ministers of the Latin American countries declared themselves to be against the demands of the U.S. to break off relations with the Axis powers.

Finally, although some took longer than others, all of them united with the Allies.

The Nazi propaganda devised by Goebbels had extended its tentacles through Latin America ever since the start of the conflict. Guillermo Pariente explains that the Nazis poured out magazines, books , radio programmes and films to influence the Latin American countries. “Berlín transferred a very large amount of money to Buenos Aires for propaganda”, he explains.

That was not the only way that the Germans tried to spread their influence in the Americas: the beautiful actress and Nazi agent, Hilda Krüger, who for a while was Goebbels’ lover, as well as making several films in Mexico managed to seduce two members of the administration and pass on confidential information to Berlín. Hitler was interested in Mexican petroleum and his captivating agent worked efficiently for him, winning the love of the Under Secretary at the Treasury, Ramón Beteta, and the Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior, Miguel Alemán.

The good neighbour

To counter the Nazi attempts to influence in South America, the U.S Department of State launched a “policy of being good neighbours”.

Actors such as Errol Flynn, Tyrone Power, Lana Turner and Ava Gardner, and film makers like John Ford and Orson Welles were sent on tours to Latin America.

The Chilean journalist, Jaime Huerta, explains that it was Nelson Rockefeller, the Coordinator at the Office of Inter-American Affairs, who proposed that Walt Disney should play a part in the campaign.

The U.S Government pledged itself to financing four films “in support of being good neighbours and cultural interchange”.

Walt Disney accepted, but he didn’t limit himself to high fives: on his return from Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Bolivia, he brought with him cases full of artistic material that would give rise to two films: Hello Friends (1943) and The Three Caballeros (1944).

That art at the service of propaganda is still art is demonstrated by the impressive drawings that Walt’s men produced during those weeks.

In the documentary, South of the Border (1942), Disney said: “The visit resulted in a better understanding of

the art, music, folklore and humour of our Latin American friends, and in rich material and a source of inspiration for future cartoon stories”.

The documentary Walt y el Grupo (Walt & the Group, 2008) shows the journey in all its depth. Its director, Ted Thomas, told Babylon: “The journey to the Latin American countries and the films they made as a result of it saved the Disney studios.

The Second World War, financial problems and confrontations involving labour arguments between art-

ists, all of them together could have forced Disney to close down. The Latin American experience revived him artistically. Many of the friendships that came out of the trip lasted for the rest of his life.”

Thomas underlines the influence that the journey had on Disney’s artists: “In the case of Mary Blair, her style changed completely. She found her own voice in Latin America. And this had a very fundamental influence on films like Alice in Wonderland”.

Durante diez semanas recorrieron Sudamérica a la caza de paisajes, personajes, colores, sonidos. La aventura no era inocente: la guerra asolaba Europa, EE.UU. se posicionaba con el bando aliado, la propaganda nazi trabajaba con eficiencia en el continente latinoamericano. Estados Unidos debía hacer algo, y el presidente Roosevelt decidió que el pato Donald era el antídoto perfecto contra la propaganda de Goebbles.

El resultado de este viaje fueron dos películas animadas nominadas a los Oscar y un tesoro artístico en forma de bocetos, notas, partituras y personajes de inspiración latina.

La propaganda nazi ideada Goebbles había extendido sus tentáculos por Latinoamérica desde el inicio de la contienda. Guillermo Pariente explica que los nazis se sirvieron de revistas, libros, radios y películas para influir en los países latinos. “Berlín transfería a Buenos Aires gran cantidad de dinero para propaganda”, explica. Ése no fue el único medio por el que los alemanes trataron de influir en América: la bella actriz y agente nazi Hilda Krüger, durante un tiempo amante de Goebbels, logró, además de rodar varias películas en México, seducir a dos miembros de la administración y pasar información confidencial a Berlín. Hitler estaba interesado en el petróleo mexicano y su cautivadora agente trabajó eficientemente para él enamorando al subsecretario de Hacienda Ramón Beteta y al secretario de Gobernación Miguel Alemán.

En el documental vemos a un Walt Disney pletórico a sus 39 años. Sus artistas trabajan a todo ritmo en las habitaciones de un hotel de Río de Janeiro convertidas en estudio. Dibujaban, escribían, llenaban partituras. También recibían allí a otros artistas brasileños.

Los hombres de Walt, a quienes se bautizó como El Grupo, recorrieron las calles de Río captando su esencia para meterla en sus cuadernos. Dibujaron bellísimas acuarelas de la bahía, del monte Pan de Azúcar. Pasaron horas en los clubes nocturnos, escuchando

En cuanto a Saludos Amigos, “fue hecha con prisas y en condiciones muy difíciles. Y aun así es una obra viva y honesta. La siguiente película resultado del viaje, Los tres caballeros, es técnicamente superior e introduce efectos como la combinación de animación y personajes

samba, viendo bailar a los negros.

Exploraron el jardín botánico llenando libretas con bocetos de plantas exóticas: orquídeas silvestres, nenúfares gigantes del Amazonas.

Según Disney, el zoo les proporcionó “gran cantidad de material y colorido, en especial los flamencos, los osos hormigueros y los tapires”.

En el cortometraje Acuarela de Brasil, uno de los cuatro que componen Saludos amigos, vemos todos estos lugares convertidos en dibujo animado.

A Disney no se le escapó el potencial cómico del armadillo: “Con su pesada armadura y su dulce expresión fue todo un hallazgo. Un camarada ideal para Pluto”. Y así lo vemos en el cortometraje que el famoso perro coprotagonizó con esta criatura en 1943.

AA S FOR HELLO, FRIENDS, “it was made quickly and in very difficult conditions. Even so it’s a living and very honest piece of work. The second film that came out of the trip, The three caballeros, is technically better and introduces effects like the combination of animation and real people. This was applied better in later films such as Mary Poppins. The influence of the trip to Latin America lasted for at least two decades”.

I In the documentary we see a 39 year old Walt Disney on top form. His artists worked at full steam in the rooms of a hotel in Río de Janeiro converted into a studio.

They drew, wrote and filled musical scores. They also received Brazilian artists there.

Walt’s men, who were known as El Grupo (the Group), walked the streets of Río capturing its essence to put it in their notebooks.

They painted beautiful water colours of the bay, and of Sugar Loaf Mountain. They spent hours in night clubs listening to samba, watching the Afro-American people dance. They explored the botanical gardens, filling notebooks with sketches of exotic plants: wild orchids and giant lilies from the Amazon basin.

According to Disney, the zoo provided them with a “great amount of material and colour, especially the flamingoes, the ant eaters and the tapirs”.

In the short, Watercolor of Brazil, one of the four that make up Hello Friends, we can see all these places converted into cartoons.

Disney didn’t miss out on the comic potential of the armadillo:

“With its heavy armour and its sweet expression it was some find, an ideal buddy for Pluto”. And that is how we see him in the short that the beast co-starred in with the famous hound in 1943.

But if there is someone who personifies the deep mark that Brazil left on El Grupo, it is José Carioca. In Hello Friends we see the birth of this character, an elegant and friendly parrot who shows Donald Duck around the streets and cafés of a Rio de Janeiro recreated with impressive vividness. The scene in which Donald offers his hand to his new friend and the latter, on recognizing the famous duck responds with a huge hug, reflects the warmth which Disney felt he was shown in Brazil. In some places the schools were closed to celebrate his arrival.

But in South of the Border we also look in on the interminable parade of the Brazilian Army on Independence Day. As the narrator says: “Brazil has not been left behind in this world at war, but is a country prepared for any contingency”. Also, on his arrival in Montevideo, Disney highlights the “great naval battle” that ended with the destruction of the German cruiser, the Admiral Graf Spee.

Disney’s journey was not a story of cartoons. Its aim was to win friends for a war.

Disney Gaucho

Walt Disney’s El Grupo lived some intense experiences in Argentina and Chile that were later turned into cartoons.

The newscast Sucesos argentinos (Argentinean events) of the era picked up on the event: a smiling Disney drinking mate (tea) and dressed as a cowboy. He exchanged mutual characters with Argentinean artists such as Ramón Columba.

In the museum of the caricaturist Severo Vaccaro in Buenos Aires they have some of those drawings.

In Hello Friends we sense to what point the Disney characters acted as his alter ego: we see Goofy dressed as a cowboy, drinking mate and enjoying a barbecue.

“Fantastic!”, he says on trying a filet steak.

On the prairie, the artists took part in the breaking in of wild

horses. They decided to turn it into a drawing full of strength and poetry. And they achieved it brilliantly in the sequence of Hello Friends in which Goofy tries to gallop on his horse.

Flying over the Andes

El Grupo flew on afterwards in a small plane to Santiago in Chile.

Crossing the skies of the Andes was for them a dangerous and memorable experience. The artists didn’t put down their pencils during the flight.

ney was a committed patriot and a fervent anti-Communist. During the Second World War he got involved in the struggle with propaganda shorts like Der Fuehrer’s Face and Ducktators.

It was precisely there, up in the air, where the plane Pedro was born, another of the characters in Hello Friends. Pedro is a baby aircraft that has to cross the Andes, carrying the mail from Argentina to Chile, exactly the same route as taken by his creators. In the film we

see the same landscapes that they saw, including the 7,000 metres of Aconcagua, which in the cartoons appears as a frightening and furious mountain. This cartoon was made 70 years ago, but a modern viewer still holds his breath when Pedro fights to keep aloft between the mountains. Is that what his creators felt during their journey?

Journalist Jaime Huerta explains that during his five days in Chile Disney and El Grupo interviewed the leading artists in the country. Several of them they visited in their studios.

The short of Hello Friends, in which Pedro the plane starred, gives a nod to one of them: when in the film the little hero hands over the mail, we discover that it consists of a single letter addressed to Jorge Délano, director of the magazine Topaze and Disney’s host in Santiago.

Disney and his collaborators, with their immense talent, knew how to pan gold from their latin opportunity. When in Hello Friends Donald Duck suffers altitude sickness at Lake Titicaca, we know that is what happened to the artists. When Goofy sits down to admire the super clear firmament above the prairies, we know that is how they lived it. “We are carrying out an investigation as entertaining as it is instructive”, said Walt Disney himself.

Disney, in 1941, was a young man, full of energy. The success of The Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo and Fantasia was still resounding. However, the death of his father caught him out on the journey. And around that time there was also a strike at his studios that affected him profoundly.

With the years, Walt Disney turned into a control freak.

But theDisney of 1941 shone.

He was still capable of dressing up as a cowboy and doing the dances of the prairies. He was a creative sponge at the peak of his splendour. He knew how to turn a journey committed to propaganda into an artistic experience that is still remembered in the museums and archives of Latin America.

En Saludos amigos vemos el nacimiento de este personaje, un elegante y simpático papagayo que le descubre al pato Donald las calles y cafés de un Río de Janeiro recreado con impresionante vividez. La escena en que Donald le ofrece la mano a su nuevo amigo y éste, al reconocer al famoso pato le responde con un fuerte abrazo, refleja el calor con que Disney se sintió recibido en Brasil: en algunos lugares las escuelas cerraron para celebrar su llegada.

Pero en South of the Border asistimos también al interminable desfile del ejército brasileño en el Día de la Independencia.

Dice el narrador: “Brasil no se ha quedado atrás en este mundo en guerra, sino que es un país preparado para cualquier contingencia”. También, a su llegada a Montevideo, Disney destaca “la gran batalla naval” que acabó con la destrucción del buque alemán Admiral Graf Spee.

El viaje de Disney no era un cuento de dibujos animados. Su fin era granjearse amigos en tiempo de guerra.

Disney Gaucho

El Grupo de Walt Disney vivió intensas experiencias en Argentina y Chile que después se convirtieron en dibujos animados.

El noticiero Sucesos argentinos de la época recoge el acontecimiento: un sonriente Disney bebe mate y se viste de gaucho.

Intercambia mutuas caricaturas con dibujantes argentinos

como Ramón Columba. En el museo de la caricatura Severo Vaccaro de Buenos Aires se conservan algunos de aquellos dibujos.

En Saludos amigos intuimos hasta qué punto los personajes de Disney ejercían de álter ego suyo: vemos a Goofy vistiéndose de gaucho, bebiendo mate y disfrutando de una parrillada. “¡Macanudo!”, dice al probar un filete.

En la pampa los dibujantes asistieron a una doma de caballos salvajes. Decidieron convertir en dibujo aquella escena llena de fuerza y poesía. Y lo lograron brillantemente en la secuencia de Saludos amigos en que Goofy trata de cabalgar a su caballo.

Volando sobre los andes

El Grupo voló después a Santiago de Chile en un pequeño avión. Atravesar el cielo de los Andes fue para ellos una experiencia peligrosa y memorable.

Durante el vuelo los dibujantes no soltaron el lápiz.

Precisamente fue allí, en el aire, donde nació el avión Pedrito, otro de los protagonistas de Saludos amigos. Pedrito es un niño avión que debe atravesar los Andes llevando el correo de Argentina a Chile, exactamente el mismo trayecto que hicieron sus creadores. En la película vemos los mismos paisajes que vieron ellos, incluyendo los 7.000 metros del Aconcagua, que en los dibujos animados aparece como una montaña temible y furibunda. Este cartoon fue hecho hace setenta años, pero el espectador actual sigue conteniendo la respiración cuando Pedrito lucha por no sucumbir entre las montañas. ¿Es eso lo que sintieron sus creadores durante el viaje?

El periodista Jaime Huerta explica que, en sus cinco días en Chile, Disney y el Grupo se entrevistaron con los principales dibujantes del país. A varios los visitaron en sus estudios. El cortometraje de Saludos amigos protagonizado por el avión Pedrito tiene un guiño amistoso para uno de ellos: cuando en la película el

Cuando en Saludos amigos el pato Donald sufre el mal de alturas en el lago Titicaca, sabemos que así les sucedió a los dibujantes. Cuando Goofy se sienta a admirar el clarísimo firmamento de la pampa, sabemos que así lo vivieron ellos. “Estábamos llevando a cabo una investigación tan

entretenida como instructiva”, dijo el propio Walt Disney.

El Disney de 1941 era un hombre joven, lleno de energía. Todavía resonaba el éxito de Los siete enanitos, Dumbo y Fantasía. La muerte de su padre, sin embargo, le sorprendió en el viaje. Y en esa época se produjo también una huelga en sus estudios que le afectó profundamente.

Dicen que con los años, Walt Disney se convirtió en un hombre obsesionado con el control.

Pero el Disney de 1941 brillaba.

Era capaz de vestirse de gaucho y de bailar las danzas de la pampa.

Era una esponja creativa en su máximo esplendor. Supo convertir un viaje de convencido propagandismo en una experiencia artística que todavía se recuerda en los museos y archivos de Latinoamérica.

HAT HAPPENED TO CURRO, THE LEGENDARY SPANISH CHARACTER (and tag line) from the Halcón Viajes (travel agency) ads who set off for the Caribbean, sowing envy among all his mates at the office? These days we would probably find him in Asia. The days are now behind us, although not too far, when the average Spanish tourist cast aside holidays at home for the first time to seek adventure in Santo Domingo. What he or she does now is head off for the East: to the temples of Angkor instead of Machu Picchu, a visit to the Great Wall rather than walks around Central Park, the stag or hen party in Bangkok and not in Las Vegas.

Asia has never been so fashionable, and Hollywood seems to have taken notice. The comedy, The Hangover, the great commercial success of 2009 after pulling in 500 million dollars around the world, has just premiered its second instalment, transferring the rave – and the headaches – of its main characters to the Thai capital. "Sometimes, to make a film about chaos, you have to go to the chaos”, the director, Todd Philipps, said about the shooting of the film.

The locals haven’t complained about his description, which isn’t to say that they like it. They say it’s good to be talked about, even if it’s bad, but the Thais are asking whether the time has come to rid Bangkok of the decadent image it’s been dragging around since the 1980s. Just mention the city and the visitor thinks of sex tourism, begging elephants, insufferable traffic and bothersome peddlers of wooden Buddhas. Perhaps because of that, many Spanish people only set foot in the city long enough to jump on to one of the paradise islands that Thailand offers, or to continue on cultural visits to Vietnam, Cambodia and Burma.

Those people miss out. Bangkok has undergone a transformation in the last few years to become one of the best places in combining tradition and modernity, East and West, the latest futuristic restaurant on the roof terrace of a skyscraper and noodles downstairs on the street, markets from another era and shopping malls from this one. And, why not say it, a night life that does not do justice to its soubriquet. The City of Angels is tolerant, open and enjoyable. It’s also cheap. In no other part of the world can you eat better for less. In few do they smile at you in exchange for so little.

The trick, as always, in visiting the city is to leave at home the tourist that we all carry inside us, and which at times means we travel without having set off. We will discover that the elevated railway and the metro have made the street traffic better, that for each erotic district there are another thousand with much more to offer, that behind the Buddha that we like to take home as a souvenir there is a more paused way of facing up to life. And that you can pass through Bangkok, even stay there for a few days, without leaving with a hangover.

QUÉ FUE DE CURRO, AQUEL MÍTICO PERSONAJE de los anuncio de Halcón Viajes que se marchaba al Caribe, dando envidia a sus compañeros de oficina? Es probable que estos días lo encontremos en Asia. Atrás han quedado los tiempos, no tan lejanos, en que el turista medio español dejaba por primera vez las vacaciones domésticas para buscar una aventura en Santo Domingo. Lo que se lleva estos días es poner rumbo al Este: los templos de Angkor en lugar de Machu Picchu, una visita a la Gran Muralla más que los paseos por Central Park, la despedida de soltero en Bangkok y no en Las Vegas.

Asia nunca ha estado más de moda y Hollywood parece haberse dado cuenta. La comedia The Hangover, el gran éxito comercial de 2009 tras recaudar 500 millones de dólares en todo el mundo, acaba de estrenar su segunda parte trasladando la juerga -y el dolor de cabeza- de sus protagonistas a la capital tailandesa. "En ocasiones, para hacer una película sobre el caos, tienes que ir al caos”, ha dicho sobre el rodaje el director del film, Todd Philipps.

Los locales no han protestado la descripción, lo que no quiere decir que les guste. Dicen que es bueno que hablen de uno, aunque sea mal, pero los tailandeses se preguntan si no ha llegado la hora de despojar a Bangkok de la imagen decadente que arrastra desde los años 80. Es nombrar la ciudad y el visitante piensa en turismo sexual, elefantes mendigos, tráfico insufrible y pesados vendedores de budas de madera. Quizá por eso muchos españoles sólo ponen el pie en la ciudad lo justo para dar el salto a alguna de las islas paradisiacas que ofrece Tailandia o continuar en viajes culturales a Vietnam, Camboya o Birmania.

Ellos se lo pierden. Bangkok se ha transformado en los últimos años en uno de los lugares que mejor combinan tradición y modernidad, Oriente y Occidente, el último restaurante futurista en la azotea de un rascacielos y los tallarines a pie de calle, mercados de otra época y centros comerciales de ésta y, por qué no decirlo, una vida nocturna que no hace justicia a su apodo. La Ciudad de los Ángeles es tolerante, abierta y divertida. También barata: en ninguna parte del mundo se come mejor por menos.

En pocos te sonríen a cambio de tan poco.

El truco, como siempre, es visitar la ciudad dejando en casa al turista que todos llevamos dentro y que a menudo hace que viajemos sin haber partido. Descubriremos que el tren elevado y el metro han mejorado el tráfico, que por cada barrio erótico hay otros mil con mucho más que ofrecer, que detrás del Buda que nos gustaría llevarnos de recuerdo hay una forma más pausada de enfrentarse a la vida y que se puede pasar por Bangkok, e incluso quedarse unos días, sin marcharse con resaca.

The corner of any street. A man lies on the ground, propped up against a tree. He is dead. The killer can be found at his side, surrounded by an impassioned crowd. A police officer emerges from among the people and takes charge of the situation.

—Are you responsible for his death? — he asks a man with bloody hands.

—Responsible for his death? Of course not! — says the killer.

—Your hands give you away — replies the police officer —. And that knife?

—The knife? Yes. It’s mine. I thrust it through his chest, and as luck would have it didn’t hit the ribs.

—So what’s the decision, then!

—But… Responsible? Never. I’ve only brought forward his destiny. And if not, take a look at him. He is still

warm and they can steal him away.

The police officer approaches the dead man and checks his temperature.

—How do you feel? — he asks him.

—I don’t know… A bit bored — replies the dead man.

—Can we do anything for you?

—Now? When I don’t need it? Where were you while I was dying of hunger?

—I suppose at home, or in a bar, having a pre-lunch drink — says the forensics expert, who has just arrived

on the scene.

—I don’t have a home. Nor money. Help arrives late, now that I am already dead.

The man from forensics recognizes straight away that he is a man without ambition, without power or riches. And being so, nobody can be blamed.

—Who has been so spot on? — asks the forensics man?

—I killed him — says the killer.

—Many thanks for your contribution. You can go now. And please, don’t forget your knife.

The killer pulls the knife out of the dead man, cleans it with a handkerchief that is already stained with red and says goodbye to everyone. The crowd that surrounds them applauds enthusiastically. The glassy eyes of the dead man turn moist.

—I too want to thank you — he says to the killer.

Satisfied that this is the end, the dead man clasps the hand of his killer.

Esquina de una calle cualquiera. Un hombre yace en el suelo, apoyado contra un árbol. Está muerto. A su lado se encuentra el asesino, rodeado por una muchedumbre exaltada. Entre la gente aparece un policía que se hace cargo de la situación.

—¿Es usted el responsable de su muerte? —le pregunta a un hombre con las manos ensangrentadas.

—¿Responsable de su muerte? ¡Claro que no! — dice el asesino.

—Sus manos le delatan —contesta el policía—. ¿Y esa navaja?

—¿La navaja? Sí. Es la mía. Yo le atravesé el pecho, con suerte de no topar con las costillas.

—¡En qué quedamos, entonces!

—Pero… ¿Responsable? Nunca. Sólo he adelantado su destino. Y si no, fíjense en él. Todavía está

caliente y pueden sonsacarle.

El policía se acerca al muerto y comprueba su temperatura.

—¿Qué tal se encuentra? —le interroga.

—No lo sé… Un poco aburrido —contesta el muerto.

—¿Podemos hacer algo por usted?

—¿Ahora? ¿Cuando no lo necesito? ¿Dónde estaban mientras me moría de hambre?

—Supongo que en casa, o en el bar, tomando el aperitivo —dice el forense, recién incorporado a la

escena.

—Yo no tengo casa. Ni dinero. La ayuda llega tarde, ahora que ya estoy muerto.

El forense reconoce enseguida a un hombre sin ambiciones, sin poder ni riquezas. Y siendo así, no se puede castigar a nadie.

—¿Quién ha sido tan certero? —pregunta el forense.

—Yo le he matado —dice el asesino.

—Muchas gracias por su contribución. Ya puede marcharse. Y, por favor, no se olvide de la navaja.

El asesino desclava la navaja del muerto, la limpia con su pañuelo ya teñido de rojo y se despide de todos. La muchedumbre que les rodea aplaude entusiasmada. Al muerto se le empapan sus ojos vidriosos.

—Yo también quiero darle las gracias —dice al asesino.

El muerto, satisfecho de que este sea el final, estrecha con fuerza la mano de su asesino.

ANESA ROMERO IS NOW on holiday; she won’t be filming again until September. The series she is currently working on La que se avecina (What’s coming near - Tele 5), has said goodbye to her but only temporarily after achieving a much sought after prime time slot with the last episode in the programme’s fifth season. “Right now we are at our best and within a few months we’ll be back again in force”, says the beauty from Alicante, while our stylist prepares her for the first change of the session. To get away from the dryness of the summer heat in the Spanish capital, some of the photos are being taken at the glamorous rooftop pool of a central hotel. Vanesa is comfortable in front of the cameras and poses, turning her back to the historic Madrid de los Austrias district and with no sign of nervousness in front of the watchful gaze of hotel guests who from first thing in the morning are toasting themselves in the sun. “When you are a model you are acting, posing and adapting your movements to the clothes you are wearing. At the end of the day, you are interpreting a role”, replies Vanesa when we ask her about her time on the catwalk. Before moving on to the small screen as a presenter of programmes as varied as Los 40 principales, which looks at the hits on the current Spanish music scene, to Noche de impacto, where she looked through the most spectacular home videos on the television, the exuberant actress worked as a professional model. She was elected Miss Alicante in 1998 and later went on to compete for a Miss Spain title. Her beauty didn’t go unnoticed by the television producers, and her life went through a 180º turn when she started out as a presenter. All the time you get more noticed, and not just for being a ‘pretty face’. “The pretty ones always tend to get more criticism, judged on whether they do something well or badly at any moment.

When I started in fashion, I realized that it got a bit small for me, my spirit demanded something more”, says Vanesa as she recalls her early days on the small screen after leaving the catwalks, and looks back on the road that led her to the series that really made her name, Aquí no hay quien viva.

The series that was broadcast by Antena 3 for three years (from 2003 to 2006) was one of the most watched in the history of Spanish television. As the new seasons grew nearer, rival channels were aware of its unstoppable success and followed its progress closely. Finally Tele 5 stuck out its chest, took the initiative and bought the programme to give it a breath of fresh air. They kept the essence and part of the cast of actors, but gave it a new name, La que se avecina. It’s in this latest series where Vanesa plays the role of Raquel, a girl looking for the love of her life and who shares an apartment with her cousin. It is in this apartment block where all the action takes place. The actress admits to us that, like Raquel, she is also “very romantic and perfectionist”, the difference being that “I’ve already found love”. Her other half is Alberto Caballero, director of the series she works on, who for sure will have taken much notice of the personality of his promised one in creating and developing her TV persona. Alberto is also creator of the original Aquí no hay quien viva, a series with which he’ll soon be travelling to Los Angeles to supervise its adaptation in the US. “It’s the first time that a US channel, in this case ABC, has bought a Spanish series. Alberto is going to be supervising its adaptation and I’ll be going to California with him to carry out various casting sessions that my agent, William Morris, has arranged for me.” To the expected question of whether it is her great goal, going to the Mecca of film, Vanesa says that it doesn’t “make me feel anxious in any way. I’ll sign up for anything that involves learning and growing. I have my own life in Spain, and if the adventure doesn’t turn out right it doesn’t matter.” She looks content, and she has reason to. The first films in which she has a major role -9 meses (9 months) and the made for TV film Entre dos reinos (Between two realms)- have just been released and she’s at the best moment in her career so far: “Right now I really adore my profession, and I believe I am where I am because I’ve earned it. Isn’t that so?” You can judge yourselves. We don’t doubt it.

Huyendo de la sequedad del calor estival de la capital española, parte de las fotos se realizan en la glamurosa piscina situada en la azotea de un céntrico hotel. Vanesa se encuentra cómoda delante de las cámaras y posa, dando la espalda al Madrid de los Austrias y sin timidez alguna, ante la atenta mirada de los huéspedes que desde primera hora se tostan al sol. “Cuando eres modelo estás actuando, posas y adaptas tus movimientos a la vestimenta, en el fondo no dejas de interpretar un papel”, responde Vanesa cuando le preguntamos por sus tablas como modelo. Antes de pasar a la pequeña pantalla como presentadora de programas tan dispares como Los 40 principales, donde listaba los éxitos de la música española del momento, o Noche de impacto, dando paso a los videos caseros más espectaculares de la televisión, la exuberante actriz trabajaba como modelo profesional. Llegó a ser Miss Alicante en 1998 y posteriormente se presentó a un certamen de Miss España. La serie que se emitió en Antena 3 durante tres años (desde 2003 hasta 2006) ha sido una de las más vistas en la historia de la televisión española. Conforme avanzaban las temporadas, las cadenas competidoras eran conscientes de su imparable éxito y le seguían la pista de cerca hasta que Tele 5 sacó pecho, tomó la iniciativa y la compró para darle otro aire; manteniendo la misma esencia y parte del elenco de actores pero con distinto nombre, La que se avecina. Es en esta última donde Vanesa interpreta el papel de Raquel, una chica en busca del amor de su vida y que comparte con su prima un piso ubicado en una comunidad de vecinos donde se desarrolla toda la trama. La actriz nos confiesa que al igual que Raquel ella también es “muy romántica y perfeccionista”, con la diferencia de que ella, Vanesa, ya ha encontrado a su amor. Esa media naranja es Alberto Caballero, director de la serie en la que trabaja, quien seguro habrá tomado buena nota de la personalidad de su prometida para crear y desarrollar su personaje.

Alberto es, además, creador de Aquí no hay quien viva, serie por la que dentro de poco tiene que viajar a Los Ángeles para supervisar su adaptación americana.

“Es la primera vez que una cadena estadounidense, en este caso ABC, compra una serie española. Alberto va a estar supervisando su adaptación y me voy a California con él para hacer varios castings que me ha conseguido mi agente William Morris”. Ante la pregunta obligada de que si es su gran meta llegar a la meca del cine, Vanesa afirma que no le crea "ningún tipo de ansiedad, todo lo que sea aprender y crecer, me apunto. En España tengo mi vida, y si la aventura sale mal no pasa nada”. Se le ve contenta, y no es para menos, ya que además acaban de estrenarse sus primeras películas en los que tiene papeles como actriz protagonista - 9 meses y el telefilme Entre dos reinos- y está en el mejor momento de su carrera: “Ahora adoro realmente mi profesión y creo que estoy donde estoy porque me lo he ganado. ¿O no?”. Juzguen ustedes, nosotros no lo dudamos.

One idea can help to save the Planet Una idea puede ayudar a salvar el Planeta

ur Plant-for-the-Planet children initiative started in Januar y 2007 when I needed to prepare a school report about the Climate Crisis. After reading about Wangari Maathai, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate who planted 30 million trees across Africa in 30 years, I was inspired to finish my speech with the words: "Let us plant one million trees in each country of the world!" My teacher encouraged me to give my speech to other classes, and after that our Principle sent me to other schools in the city. This is how our Plant-for-the-Planet Initiative started and the first tree was planted in March. A year later we gave our first press conference and 500 different media sources reported it. Furthermore, children have already planted about 4 million trees and more than 4,643 children have been educated as Climate Justice Ambassadors.

When you think of what effect we had on society you feel the need to keep going. So it is that we have decided to think of a plan which summarised our aims in a few points. On 1 July 2010, we children handed over our '3-Point-Plan' to 133 embassies in Berlin.

Imagine that we the children were government leaders, and had to face the big decisions at the next climate summit, we would say this. Firstly, we need to get carbon to be shipped to the museum. Because there is the technology to reduce CO2 emissions to zero by 2050. Secondly we would talk about climate justice. Here we present a solution to stop the predicated global warming by reducing CO2 emissions to 600 billion tonnes before 2050. To do so, ever yone in the World should produce a maximum of 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per year. It is important to state that if 500 million trees were planted ever y year an additional 5 million tonnes of CO2 could be removed from the atmosphere.

The equation is as follows: If ever y person were to plant as many trees as the number of years they had been alive, then almost 500 billion trees could be planted and the emissions would be reduced.

These intentions have implied our goals for the future. By 2020 we children want to have empowered one million children to become active for their future, in 20,000 academies worldwide. We also want to start thousands of local clubs in all countries around the world. Another goal is to plant a trillion trees.

If we can reach that goal as a world family, we should definitely have a better future and ever yone would then know about the importance of climate justice.

uestra iniciativa infantil Plant-for-the-Planet surgió en enero de 2007 cuando tuve que preparar un trabajo para el colegio sobre el Cambio Climático. Después de leer sobre Wangari Maathai, Premio Nobel de la Paz, que había plantado 30 millones de árboles en África durante 30 años, me sentí inspirado para terminar mi discurso con estas palabras: ¡Plantemos un millón de árboles en cada país del mundo! Mi profesor me animó a que repitiera el discurso en otras clases y después nuestro director me mandó a otras escuelas de la ciudad. Así arrancó este proyecto que nos llevó a plantar el primer árbol en marzo de aquel año. Doce meses después, ofrecimos una rueda de prensa a la que asistieron más de 500 medios. Poco después, muchos niños ya habían plantado más de 4 millones de árboles; de hecho, a día de hoy más de 4.643 ya han sido formados como Embajadores de la Justicia para el Clima.

Cuando piensas en la repercusión social que estamos obteniendo, sientes la necesidad de seguir adelante. Por eso hemos preparado un plan que resume nuestros objetivos en unos cuantos puntos.

El 1 de julio de 2010, entregamos nuestro proyecto a 133 embajadas de Berlín. Imaginaos que nosotros, los niños, fuéramos líderes gubernamentales y tuviéramos que enfrentarnos a grandes decisiones, en la próxima cumbre por el clima diríamos lo siguiente. Primero, propondríamos mandar el carbono a los museos para que en 2050 las emisiones de CO2 pudieran reducirse a cero. En segundo lugar, hablaríamos de la justicia para el clima. Nosotros planteamos una posible solución al calentamiento global: Reducir la emisión de CO2 a 600 billones de toneladas antes del año 2050. Para lograrlo, cada habitante del mundo debería producir como máximo 1,5 toneladas de CO2 por año. Si cada año se plantasen 500 millones de árboles tendríamos 5 millones de toneladas menos de CO2. La fórmula es la siguiente: Si todas las personas plantaran tantos árboles como años de sus vidas les quedan por vivir se podrían levantar 500 billones de árboles y las emsiones serían reducidas.

Estas intenciones llevan implícitos nuestros objetivos para el futuro. En 2020, a nosotros los niños nos gustaría haber impulsado a un millón de niños más a convertirse en participantes activos de su futuro, instalando 20.000 escuelas por el mundo. También queremos promover miles de clubs locales en todos los continentes, y otra de nuestras aspiraciones es plantar un trillón de árboles. Si conseguimos alcanzar todos estos objetivos tendremos un futuro mejor y todos comprenderemos así la importancia de la justicia para el clima.
