Editor´s letter Please, put your money in my cutting edge tech

ALTHOUGH THE HISTORY OF inventions seems to have reduced Spanish innovations to a fistful of things on a stick - from laziness? genius? a love for sticks? - it’s true that in our country, in a period in which nobody dares pronounce the word bonanza, the start up phenomenon has become more than a mere business #trendingtopic. You’ve heard it before; an investment fund without a poker hand to bet on, meets up with a youngster with a visionary idea. Boom! This love at first sight reaction will bring the former a great return for its investment and a reason to keep betting, and turn the latter into a twenty something CEO sat upon a multi-million dollar company. That’s how a lad in a T shirt and jeans ended up lecturing to a technological forum of the G8.

Taking into account the little interest shown by investors in our country in the technology sector – despite the growth in risk capital - not even the most optimistic of analyses could have predicted this phenomenon. What’s certain is that the tiny Spanish ‘Silicon Valley’ (without a valley, without silicon), is now a reality. Cloud computing, semantic technology, revolutionary apps, on line mobile telephony, a message service on the web…

The small great companies we are taking a look at in this issue have sprung up in a relatively short time; few of them are more than five years old. Most of their geniuses don’t wear suits, are still under thirty, and are already in the agendas of the major IT companies, with investors on the hunt for the next white whale.

The technological bubble of 2000, on one hand, and the few previous business models to go by on the other, have contributed to investor caution in this type of company. Combined with a lack of stable financing, this has made them vulnerable once again.

“Electric light illuminates just as well here as it does where it was invented”, was what (Bilbao-born philosopher) Unamuno added to the already existing epitaph “let them do the inventing!” that has cost us so much to eliminate from the collective memory. You were wrong about that, Don Miguel: light can illuminate in the same way in all parts. But, in the long term, knowing all about it will cost us less than ignoring it.

Aunque la historia de los inventos parece haber reducido las innovaciones patrias a un puñado de artilugios con palo -¿Pereza?, ¿genialidad?, ¿amor por los palos?- lo cierto es que en nuestro país, en una época en la que nadie se atreve a nombrar la palabra bonanza, el fenómeno startup se ha convertido en más que un #trendingtopic empresarial. Ya saben, fondo de inversiones sin mano con la que apostar se encuentra con joven con una idea visionaria. Boom. Este flechazo reportará al primero un gran retorno en su inversión y una razón para seguir apostando, y convertirá al segundo en un CEO de veintitantos sentado sobre una empresa multimillonaria. Así es cómo un chaval en camiseta y pantalones vaqueros acaba dando lecciones ante un foro tecnológico del G8.

Teniendo en cuenta el escaso interés de los inversores de nuestro país en el sector –pese al crecimiento del capital riesgo-, ni el más optimista de los análisis podría haber predicho este fenómeno. El pequeño ‘Silicon Valley’ español (sin valle, sin silicio), es ya toda una realidad. Programación “en la nube”, tecnología semántica, apps revolucionarias, telefonía móvil online, un servicio de notas sobre la web… Las pequeñas grandes compañías a las que nos acercamos en este número han nacido en un período relativamente corto, no muchas cumplen los cinco años. La mayoría de sus genios no viste con traje, no sobrepasan la treintena y ya están en las agendas de las grandes empresas de IT, con inversores a la caza de la nueva ballena blanca.

La burbuja tecnológica del año 2000, por un lado, y los escasos antecedentes de modelos de negocio por otro, han contribuido a la cautela inversionista en este tipo de compañías, lo que unido a la falta de financiación estable las vuelve vulnerables. “La luz eléctrica alumbra aquí tan bien como allí donde se inventó”, fue lo que añadió Unamuno al ya de por sí lapidario “¡Que inventen ellos!”, que tanto nos ha costado eliminar de la memoria colectiva.

En eso se equivocaba, Don Miguel: la luz podrá alumbrar igual en todas partes, pero a largo plazo, conocer todo sobre ella nos costará menos que ignorarlo.

Along the path that has led us to this issue has extended, from the network to the cities, a social movement [#spanishrevolution] without precedent, born from a feeling of indignation among anonymous citizens. The start-up companies that take centre stage on this cover are also, in their way, powerful hidden realities. They are born and grow from nothing and then, suddenly, one day they conquer the world.

Y las compañías startup que protagonizan esta portada también son, a su modo, potentes realidades ocultas. Nacen y crecen de la nada y de repente, un día, conquistan el mundo.

A Taste of Spain 2011 For the third consecutive year the Babylon Magazine team will be taking part in the sixth edition of A Taste of Spain. The most important Spanish cultural event of the year in the United Kingdom, it is organized by the Spanish Tourism Office in London. Throughout the day one of the city centre’s busiest arteries, Regent Street, will be closed to traffic to give way to a range of stands from different Spanish regions and provinces as they show off their culture to the more than half a million visitors who usually pass along Regent Street on the day. If on previous editions Babylon brought a touch of cultural, alternative and different colour to the event, with shows of urban art, table football championships and live street theatre, this year it will be bringing to London for the first time the Seville DJs Los Rumbers, maestros in the mixing of the purest samples del flamenco with styles as varied as soul, funk and hip-hop. What’s more, all those who visit the stand of Tourspain will be presented with a copy of the #17 issue of Babylon Magazine.

We are one Forty years defending the rights of indigenous peoples speaks for the commitment of Survival, an organization that works throughout the world to improve the difficult situation of these ‘unconquerable’ peoples. To celebrate their anniversary, the organization has edited the book Somos uno (We are one), a work that gives a voice to those who don’t normally have one. The book contains emotional declarations from the indigenous people themselves, essays from leading figures such as Noam Chomsky and Eduardo Galeano, and beautiful photos by master photographers such as Sebastião Salgado and Steve McCurry, among others. A work that demonstrates the beauty and riches of these people, at the same time as criticizing the economic interests that are destroying them. PAGE 79.

Actress and singer Julia de Castro turned journalist to go up to the apartment of Núria Espert. She studied dramatic art at The Royal School of Dramatic Art (R.E.S.A.D) and is the soul of De la Puríssima, the group that has reinvented the couplé genre in the 21st century.

Following an extensive career in various areas of the national media, he began his international career as correspondent in Berlin for RNE radio. He covered the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and since 2006 has been correspondent for RNE in Jerusalem, from where he writes the Live From in this issue.

After finishing her studies at the ArteDiez school she founded a small graphic design and illustration studio in Madrid.

At the moment she participates in various advertising campaigns and publishes illustrated books. In the Bestiario section of this issue, she illustrates Diplomat, a story about the writer Juan Carlos Márquez.

Journalist, writer and an old acquaintance of Babylon. He has lived in Italy, Belgium, Serbia and the UK, and is author of the novels Los navegantes and Alarido de Dios, as well as the books of short stories La quietud que precede and Cuentos inhumanos. In this issue he presents us with his polyhedric vision of the indigenous peoples of Latin America.

m no expert in new technology, but even if in the future they create versions of digital comics on a massive scale I believe that the paper ones will not disappear completely. Illustrated novels and comics on paper will keep on being edited, and the publishing houses and printers will continue to function in the same way as in the past, with the added proviso that they will now co-exist with the new electronic form. But no computer or other device will, for the moment, kill off the paper book.

I recognize that Spanish authors, my contemporaries, I like a lot. I have learnt endless things from their works, and not only from those of the greats. From Martín Romero, for example, an author who has still not been published – precisely this year, they are editing his first work – I have learnt a lot. And from Álvaro Ortiz, a man from the Aragon region who has only published two albums. Within the circle of hallowed authors, those with an extensive career already behind them, I love Paco Roca, the work of Bartolomé Seguí and the scripts of Hernández Cava. I also like Miguel Gallardo and David Rubín, who has just published El Héroe. In general, I enjoy a wide variety of styles, and the lat few years have confirmed to me pleasingly that the Spanish comic has an exhaustive spectrum of genres. We only have to look around us to realize that Spanish authors are not alike, that all of them have something to offer. What is happening on the national comic scene, with both authors and works, is fantastic.

I have never understood what use are prizes, nor to where they will take me, but to become an upcoming author – that label – has helped people get to know of me. I suppose each title has a precise moment in the career of an author. With my first book, La Guerra del Profesor Bertenev, (Professor Bertenev’s War), I wanted to tell a story of adventures and action, and at the end what came out of me was an intimate and profound character. In Café Budapest my curiosity pushed me to produce an album concentrated on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict: how it began, how it emerged and what it was that happened in that part of the world. On the other hand, my latest book is an illustrated biography of James Joyce, because I have always been attracted by his perspective on life, that look according to which the smallest and most common things in life are, at the same time, the extraordinary things in life. This original and picturesque vision contrasted with all I had done before; it attracted me. Although deep down, perhaps I’m a selfish person and I use the books I illustrate to develop myself as an author.

o soy un experto en nuevas tecnologías, pero si en un futuro se creasen masivamente versiones de cómics digitales, creo que de todas formas el papel no desaparecería por completo. Se seguirían editando novelas gráficas y cómics en papel, y las editoriales y las imprentas continuarían funcionando de la misma manera, como en el pasado, con el añadido de que convivirían, ahora, con la nueva vía electrónica. Pero ningún ordenador o dispositivo matará, de momento, al libro de papel.

Reconozco que los autores españoles, mis contemporáneos, me gustan mucho. He aprendido infinidad de cosas a través de sus obras, aunque no sólo las de los grandes. De Martín Romero, por ejemplo, un autor que aún no ha publicado -precisamente este año se editará su ópera prima- he aprendido mucho. O de Álvaro Ortiz, un aragonés que apenas ha publicado dos álbumes. Dentro del círculo los autores consagrados, con una trayectoria dilatada a sus espaldas, me encanta Paco Roca, el trabajo de Bartolomé Seguí y los guiones de Hernández Cava. También me gustan Miguel Gallardo y David Rubín, que acaba de publicar El Héroe. En general, disfruto con una gran diversidad de estilos, y en los últimos años estoy comprobando gratamente que el cómic español posee un exhaustivo abanico de géneros. Sólo tenemos que mirar a nuestro alrededor para darnos cuenta de que los autores españoles no se parecen unos a otros, que todos tienen algo que ofrecer. Lo que está ocurriendo en el panorama del cómic nacional, en cuanto a autores y obras, es fantástico.

Nunca he sabido para qué sirven los premios ni hacia dónde me llevarían, pero convertirme en autor revelación -esa etiqueta- me ha ayudado a que la gente me conozca. Supongo que en la carrera de un autor cada título tiene su momento preciso. En mi primer libro, La Guerra del Profesor Bertenev, quería contar una historia de aventuras y acción, y al final me salió un personaje intimista y profundo. En Café Budapest mi curiosidad me empujó a hacer un álbum centrado en el conflicto palestino-israelí: cómo empezó, por qué surgió y qué fue lo que ocurrió en esa parte del mundo. En cambio, mi último libro es una biografía dibujada de James Joyce porque siempre me ha llamado la atención su perspectiva de la vida, esa mirada según la cual las cosas más pequeñas y vulgares de la vida son, al mismo tiempo, las cosas extraordinarias de la vida. Esta visión tan original y pintoresca, que contrastaba con todo lo que yo había hecho antes, me atraía. Aunque en el fondo, tal vez soy egoísta y utilizo los libros que dibujo para evolucionar como autor.

The night in The Sun “Us the unemployed, the poorly paid, the subcontracted, the precarious, the young… we want change and a dignified future”. Simple and direct, such was their declaration of intent.

The complicated economic situation, unemployment, political corruption and the two party system that springs from the current electoral process, forced thousands of indignant citizens from all around the country into the streets on Sunday, 15 May. Following the demo in Madrid, a small part of the movement decided to set up camp in the Puerta del Sol (The Sun Gate) plaza to continue with their peaceful protest. Something new started to incubate in Sol. Without having been planned, it turned into the epicentre of a movement whose waves have expanded around the world.

Assemblies, commissions, proposals and actions have emerged in the plazas of many Spanish and European cities. With the aim of expanding the assemblies to the districts, and following on from the multitudinous demos in France and Greece, it looks like the Movimiento 15M, without knowing still exactly which way it is going, keeps on sailing.

La complicada situación económica, el desempleo, la corrupción política o el bipartidismo fruto del sistema electoral actual, empujaron a miles de ciudadanos indignados de todo el país a salir a la calle el domingo quince de mayo.

Tras la manifestación de Madrid, una pequeña representación del movimiento decidió acampar en la plaza de la Puerta del Sol y continuar pacíficamente con la protesta. Algo nuevo se empezó a gestar en Sol; sin haberlo planeado, se convirtió en el epicentro de un movimiento cuyas ondas se han expandido por todo el mundo. Asambleas, comisiones, propuestas y acciones han surgido en las plazas de muchas ciudades españolas y europeas. Con el objetivo de expandir las asambleas desde las plazas a los barrios, y tras las manifestaciones multitudinarias de Francia y Grecia, parece que el Movimiento 15M, sin conocer aún su rumbo exacto, sigue navegando.

APPARENTLY HE HAD HIS tickets booked and was ready to go, but an acutely ill Ernest Hemingway never made it to Pamplona. He committed suicide just three days before the chupinazo firework display that heralded the beginning of his favourite fiesta. That was 50 years ago this year, and to mark the anniversar y of his death the region of Navarra is planning a special tribute to the Nobel Literature Prize winner at the San Fermin festival in July. The Sun Also Rises (Fiesta), the stor y of a group of expats in the early 1920s on their way to expereience the highlight of the regional capital’s fiesta, the running of the bulls, made Hemingway's name as a novelist. It also helped create the image of San Fermin as the ‘fiesta of fiestas’ and put Pamplona firmly on the tourist map. How the anniversar y will be celebrated is yet to be decided. But Navarra’s director general of tourism, Carlos Arce, promises they will be repaying the man “who made us known internationally.” Carlos has also run with the bulls.“You have to know what you are doing, to know where to put yourself” is his advice to aspiring runners. Whether you go for San Fermin, or prefer a quieter time, there are plenty of Hemingway haunts to see, among them his favourite La Perla Hotel and the Café Iruña. A signposted trail will also take you to places such as the river where he used to chill out fishing.

Ocurrió hace 50 años, y para conmemorar el aniversario de su muerte la región de Navarra está planeando un homenaje especial al Nobel de Literatura de cara a la festividad de este año, el próximo mes de julio. Fiesta, la novela que narra el camino de un grupo de expatriados, al comienzo de los años 20, para vivir los eventos más destacados de los Sanfermines de Pamplona -los encierros y corridas de toros- dio a conocer a Hemingway como autor en todo el mundo. También contribuyó a crear la imagen de San Fermín como ‘la fiesta de las fiestas’; Pamplona se situó definitivamente en los mapas turísticos. Los detalles del contenido del aniversario están aún por decidir, pero el director general de turismo de Navarra, Carlos Arce, promete que van a devolver la moneda al hombre que “nos hizo conocidos por todo el mundo.” Carlos también ha corrido con los toros en Pamplona. “Hay que saber qué haces, dónde te metes”, es su consejo para aquellos que aspiran a correr un encierro en San Fermín. Pero para los que prefieran un viaje más tranquilo, se pueden visitar muchos de los lugares predilectos de Hemingway. Entre ellos su hotel favorito, La Perla; o El Café Iruña. Un camino señalizado llevará al visitante a sitios especiales, como el río donde el escritor solía ir a relajarse pescando.

For lovers of electronic sounds, Sónar offers a very broad spectrum of possibilities. A mix of music and multimedia art, it’s a world class avant garde event. The city of Barcelona becomes the world epicentre of electronic music, with the presence of the best known DJs and creators of the moment.

But there’s also room for emerging and innovative artists.

The most multicultural festival within our frontiers is celebrating a birthday. Pirineo-Sur has reached its 20th edition, a meeting of continents, cultures and sounds that has hosted throughout its history musicians from right around the world. This year the theme is Iberian tribes and pays homage to the Iberian Peninsula. As always, variety is the main characteristic that defines the festival.

Regarded as one of the leading reggae festivals in the world, Rototom Sunsplash returns for another year with the best of Jamaican sounds. After leaving its usual base in Italy last summer, reggae has now set up home in Benicàssim. This year it will delight all lovers of this kind of music. What better way to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Bob Marley than dancing to reggae on the beach?

BM: What differences do you find in producing in Spain and the USA? JP: Here, the same sort of money doesn’t move around music. Spanish studios have got up to date, but electronic music hasn’t made its mark because with very little material you can do it in your own home.

BM: What are the styles that influence you?

JP: I have always liked AfroAmerican music. In the moment that styles of music start extending around the world they awaken sentiments beyond races. Every one interprets what they feel, and from there on it’s the game of supply and demand.

BM: Which artists from the past and from the present would you like to produce?

JP: Busta Rhymes, Duquende and Lady Gaga. Also Miles Davis, and with Bob Marley I’d give him some heavy rhythm with a dance hall style and add in some bits of Barry White.

BM: ¿Qué diferencias encuentras en la forma de producir en España y EEUU? JP: Aquí no se mueve el mismo dinero alrededor de la música. Los estudios españoles se han puesto al día, pero la música electrónica no encuentra una frontera en eso, porque con muy poco material puedes hacerlo en tu casa.

BM: ¿Qué estilos te influencian?

JP: Desde siempre me ha gustado la música negra. En el momento que las músicas se expanden por el mundo despiertan sentimientos más allá de las razas, cada uno interpreta lo que siente y a partir de ahí es un juego de oferta y demanda.

BM: ¿A qué artistas del pasado y del presente te gustaría producir?

JP: A Busta Rhymes, Duquende y Lady Gaga. También a Miles Davis, y a Bob Marley le haría un ‘ritmazo’ con rollo dancehall y metería samples de Barry White.

Seems like the days of piles of sometimes bothersome maps and leaflets that a tourist needed to cope with a new city are becoming a thing of the past, at least in Segovia.

Augmented reality has reached tourism guides. This concept, which looks as if it’s been taken straight out of the Matrix, consists in the superpositioning of virtual reality, created by computer, on physical reality. Through the use of PDAs and, especially intelligent cell phones (Iphone and Android) you can call up information about what you are seeing in real time. Using the free download Layar app, by just pointing the mobile towards a place you can receive information on your phone. That includes technical and other data of interest, photographs of the monument or place where you are standing, as well as being able to learn about its history via the audio guides incorporated in the system. The Augmented Reality Guide to Segovia is divided into six sections: Churches, Museums, Events, Palaces, the Jewish Quarter and Civil Works.

The extensive information about what’s available for tourists in the guide allows the user to get away from the traditional itineraries and to discover new corners of the city. Eusebio Robles, who works for Auge, the company in charge of installing the system in Segovia, is one of those who are betting on this technique becoming one of the keys of tourism in the future. “The ease with which you can get the information, the development of knowledge, the fact it’s free and, even, its ecological value in that it saves a lot of paper being used to produce leaflets and maps, will make augmented reality a system that in the end will prevail”.

Parece que ya van quedando atrás, al menos en Segovia, los numerosos y a veces engorrosos mapas y folletos con los que el turista tenía que desenvolverse en una ciudad nueva. Ha llegado la Realidad Aumentada a las guías turísticas. Este concepto, que parece sacado de Matrix, consiste en la superposición de una realidad virtual, creada por ordenador, sobre la realidad física a través de un dispositivo.

Mediante el uso de PDAs y, sobretodo, móviles inteligentes (Iphone o Android) se puede obtener información de aquello que estamos viendo a tiempo real. A través de la aplicación Layar (de descarga gratuita), con tan sólo enfocar el móvil hacia un lugar, aparece información en nuestro móvil con datos técnicos y curiosos, o fotografías del monumento o sitio en el que nos encontramos, así como cabe la posibilidad de conocer su historia mediante las audio-guías con las que cuenta el sistema. La guía en Realidad Aumentada segoviana se divide en 6 apartados: Iglesias, Museos, Eventos, Palacios, Judería y Obra Civil. La amplia información de la oferta turística de la guía permite al usuario salirse de los itinerarios tradicionales y conocer rincones nuevos de la ciudad. Eusebio Robles, miembro de Auge, la empresa encargada de instalar este sistema en Segovia, es uno de los que apuestan por esta técnica como una de las claves del turismo en el futuro. “La facilidad para acceder a la información, el fomento del conocimiento, su gratuidad e, incluso, su valor ecológico que ahorra mucho papel sin tener que producir folletos y mapas, hacen de la realidad aumentada un sistema que terminará por imponerse”.

Feeling the abracadabra effect by Ángela Gala One of the first tricks he remembers was seeing a magician pulling a bowl full of real fish out of his cape. “They are dreams. What we magicians do is to present dreams in reality”. The speciality of Juan Tamariz is playing cards. And if you suggest he tries the art of other illusionists or escapists he would reply bluntly that he is not going to do magic without his cards. “The playful part is fantastic for me.

Magic means tricks of the hand; anything more playful is impossible”. Ever since he had a book about card games, when he was 12 or 13 years old, he has delved into the art of magic with the use of this instrument, with which he feels a deep physical relationship. “Always, every day of my life, I carry a pack in my pocket. We are inseparable”.

"Magic is something enchanting, something that fascinates you. It moves you. Your inner pathos moves a little and you feel a passion and a pleasure that are difficult to explain”. What Tamariz likes most is to see the reaction of the public. “My main goal is for the vital energy that is felt by people in experiencing what is impossible and marvelous to give them more strength in seeking out and being thrilled and overcoming everything in life”. Many Spaniards remember him as the happy magician, the one with the long hair and top hat who appeared on the telly with his pack of cards.

His books have taken him to foreign universities to give master classes. His genius for magic has brought him great success and much recognition. His latest award was receiving the gold medal for merit of the Bellas Artes (Fine Arts) 2011.

Uno de los primeros trucos que recuerda fue ver sacar a un mago, de su capa, una pecera llena de auténticos peces. “Son sueños; los magos lo que hacemos es presentar sueños en la realidad”.

La especialidad de Juan Tamariz es la cartomagia y si se le planteara probar con el arte de otros ilusionistas o de los escapistas él respondería con contundencia que no va a hacer magia sin sus cartas. “La parte lúdica para mí es fantástica. La magia quiere decir juegos de manos; más lúdico imposible”. Desde que con doce o trece años tuvo un libro de juegos de cartas, ha profundizado en el arte de la magia utilizando este instrumento, con el que guarda una profunda relación física. “Siempre, todos los días de mi vida, llevo la baraja en el bolsillo; somos inseparables”.

“La magia es algo encantador, algo que te fascina”. “Te conmueve, tu pathos interior se mueve un poquito y sientes una pasión y un placer difíciles de explicar”. Lo que más le gusta a Tamariz es ver la reacción del público. “Mi máximo objetivo es que la energía vital que siente la gente en esa vivencia de lo imposible y maravilloso les de más fuerzas para buscar e ilusionarse y superar todo en la vida”. Muchos españoles le recuerdan como el mago alegre, de pelo largo y chistera que aparecía en la tele con su baraja de cartas. Sus libros le han llevado a universidades extranjeras a dar clases magistrales. Su genio para la magia le ha devuelto un gran éxito y múltiples reconocimientos. El último es haber recibido la Medalla de Oro al Mérito de las Bellas Artes 2011.

The new route for Vetusta Morla THE MADRID GROUP LOOKS TO REPEAT SUCCESS WITH their record MAPAS. EL GRUPO MADRILEÑO BUSCA REEDITAR EL ÉXITO CON su disco MAPAS. WORDS BY BÁRBARA GONZÁLEZ

Francis Bacon VETUSTA MORLA IS ONE of the paradigms of Spanish indie music, although they prefer to avoid labels. "We make songs," they say. Songs that become successes ever since in 2008 the Madrid sextet brought to the market their first piece of work, Un día en el mundo (A day in the world).

Their usual cryptic lyrics and a large variety of sound compared with previous efforts are the attributes of their new record. After three years of waiting, Mapas is being presented to the public to demonstrate that Vetusta Morla is not just a one day wonder.

Guillermo Galván, guitarist, keyboard player and back-up singer with the group, told us about the style of the new work. For the moment, Lo que te hace grande (What makes you great) is the song that is getting the most attention. “It has a touch of positivism, of optimism. It tries to tell somebody that from here on in everything is going to turn out all right. Although it is written with one person in mind it can be applied to a very large group because it is one of the most explicit and direct songs that we have written”.

VETUSTA MORLA ES UNO de los paradigmas del indie español, pero ellos prefieren evitar las etiquetas. “Hacemos canciones”, dicen. Canciones que convierten en éxitos desde que, en 2008, el sexteto madrileño sacara al mercado su primer trabajo, Un día en el mundo. Sus habituales letras crípticas y una mayor variedad sonora respecto a su predecesor son los atributos del nuevo disco. Tras tres años de espera, Mapas se presenta al público para demostrar que Vetusta Morla no es éxito de un día. Guillermo Galván, guitarrista, teclados y coros del grupo, nos ha transmitido el carácter del nuevo trabajo. De momento, Lo que te hace grande es la canción que más está sonando. “Tiene un punto de positivismo, de optimismo. Intenta decirle a alguien que adelante, que todo va a salir bien. Aunque está escrita para una persona, puede ser aplicada a un colectivo muy grande porque es una de las canciones más explícitas o directas que hemos escrito”.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: Why Mapas (Maps)?

GUILLERMO GALVÁN: A map is a representation of a reality; or something that tries to pass a reality from one scale to another, of one nature to another. We thought suddenly that we had 12 points that were 12 songs, which were trying to pass to a musical language or to literary-musical emotions, sensations and ways of seeing things. So we thought that a song is really a sort of map, an approximation to something.

BM: How is this album different from Un día en el mundo?

GG: The way of focusing it has been very different. It’s recorded in analog format, on reel to reel tapes that don’t allow you to record many takes, which is why the takes on the final album are the second or third ones. And the second basic difference is that it is recorded live. We went to Gárate studios in the Basque Country to record it, and we sought out a place that had a hall big enough for all to play, trying to bring to the studio the vivacity and the presence of a live performance.

BM: Where would you place Vetusta Morla in the Spanish musical panorama?

GG: I don’t understand much about genres. When we are asked I

All styles pigeonhole, and that typecasting at times makes you lose a lot. I understand you have to locate the consumer on the right floor of the music store. But to me the label indie doesn’t say anything; I don’t know what it is.

BM: After three years without an album, Mapas was a long-awaited piece of work…

GG: Having our own record label allows us not to have to work to fixed dates and times. We’ve been on tour for two years with the first album, and with the new one we’ve been preparing it for a year. We decided to cut the tour when we thought that everything had been played and said, and decided to have a fallow year to concentrate on recording.

BM: How do you prepare the songs?

GG: Normally all the songs are born at home. They spring from an initial idea that somebody brings along to the others. Usually Juanma and I are the ones who write the lyrics and carry forward these initial ideas, and then between all of us we give them form and turn them into a song for Vetusta Morla. Each song sounds as it does thanks to the contribution of the six of us.

BM: Vetusta Morla is now a known group. So does this change your way of seeing things?

GG: When you know where you are coming from and have spent a long time with the people around you it is much easier not to lose direction. It’s the songs that are more famous than us. We are lucky in that what is popular is our work, and for the moment we are not being pressured by people in a way that stops us leading a normal life.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: ¿Por qué Mapas?

GUILLERMO GALVÁN: Una mapa es una representación de una realidad; o algo que intenta pasar una realidad de una escala a otra, de una naturaleza a otra. Pensamos que de repente teníamos doce puntos, que eran doce canciones, que lo que trataban era de pasar a lenguaje musical o literariomusical emociones, sensaciones y maneras de ver las cosas. Entonces pensamos que una canción no deja de ser un mapa, una aproximación a algo.

BM: ¿Qué distingue a este disco de Un día en el mundo?

GG: La manera de enfocarlo ha sido muy distinta.

Está grabado en formato analógico, en cintas de bobina que no te permiten grabar muchas tomas por lo que las tomas que hay en el disco final son la segunda o la tercera. Y la segunda diferencia fundamental es que está grabado en directo. Fuimos a grabarlo a los estudios Gárate, en el País Vasco, y buscamos un sitio que tuviera una sala lo suficientemente grande como para poder tocar todos e intentar llevar al estudio la viveza y el empaque que hay en el directo.

BM: ¿Dónde se sitúa Vetusta Morla dentro del panorama musical español?

GG: No entiendo mucho de géneros. Cuando nos preguntan yo siempre digo que hacemos canciones de la manera más honesta que sabemos y pensando siempre en canciones, nunca en encajarlos dentro de un estilo o de otro. Todos los estilos encasillan y ese encasillamiento a veces te hace perder mucha riqueza. Yo entiendo que hay que situar al consumidor dentro de la planta de la tienda de discos. Pero a mí la etiqueta indie no me dice nada, no sé lo que es.

BM: Tras tres años sin disco, Mapas era un trabajo muy esperado…

GG: Ser nuestra propia discográfica nos permite no tener que trabajar con plazos ni fechas. Hemos estado dos años de gira con el primer disco, y el nuevo lo hemos preparado realmente en un año.

Decidimos cortar la gira cuando creímos que ya estaba todo tocado y todo dicho, y decidimos dejar un año en barbecho de cara a los medios para centrarnos en grabar.

BM: ¿Cómo preparáis las canciones?

GG: Normalmente, todas las canciones nacen en casa. Nacen de una idea inicial que alguien lleva al local. Generalmente somos Juanma y yo los que escribimos las letras y llevamos esas ideas iniciales y luego entre todos le damos forma y la convertimos en una canción de Vetusta Morla. Cada canción suena y es lo que es gracias a la aportación de los seis.

BM: Vetusta Morla ya es un grupo conocido. ¿Cambia esto la forma de ver las cosas?

GG: Cuando sabes de dónde vienes y llevas mucho tiempo con la gente que tienes alrededor es mucho más fácil no perder el rumbo. Lo que son famosas son las canciones, más que nosotros. Tenemos la suerte de que lo que es popular es nuestro trabajo y de momento no tenemos presión por parte de la gente que nos impida hacer una vida normal.

Free Range Music There is no excuse this summer not to heed the call of a festival.

There are ones for all tastes and all pockets. Who said that money is a problem when it comes to enjoying live music? Every summer there are dozens of free festivals around the country offering the most varied styles of music: rock, pop, folk, electronic, punk... There are small scale ones in villages lost in the back of beyond as is the case of Poborina Folk (Teruel), right up to major musical events of international standing such as the Festival de Ortigueira, where lovers of folk from around the world meet up.

This year it’s counting on groups like The Elder from the United States and The Urban Folk Quartet from Britain. Another very original festival option is Vijazz at Vilafranca del Penedès, a mix of the best of jazz, featuring artists of the stature of Medeski and Martin & Wood, with the tasting of the best wines of the region. Or the Pulpop, in Roquetas de Mar, a festival that hosts the top of national pop.

s part of the Drink Ribera, Drink Spain campaign to promote Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin (DO) wines in the US, a Ribera del Duero Wine School has been set up. It’s a virtual school in which web users will be able to learn about the tasting and matching of the wines, as well as the history of the DO in the Castilla y Leon region and wine culture in general.

Reyno Gourmet, the taste of Navarra

R

eyno Gourmet (Gourmet Kingdom), the brand that groups many of the agricultural food products from the region of Navarra, has begun a campaign to provide information and promote its European quality symbols (DOP and IGP). It consists of tastings and gifts handed out at shopping centres in Madrid, Barcelona, the Basque Country and Navarra along the lines of its Navarra Road Show.

Covap pork cuts arrive in the US

ased on a traditional recipe, COVAP pork cut is very much a part of the province of Cordoba.

The company is based in the area of Los Pedroches, and the meat is Iberian pig shoulder blade coated with a mild mix of spices and paprika pepper. On cutting it produces a succulent and tender meat, with an unbeatable taste that can now start to be enjoyed in the US. Basado en una receta tradicional, el lomito COVAP es una pieza muy de la tierra cordobesa localizada en la comarca de los Pedroches, realizada con presa de paletilla ibérica y aderezada con una suave mezcla de especias y pimentón. Al corte se obtiene una carne jugosa, tierna, y con un sabor inigualable que ya pueden empezar a disfrutar en Estados Unidos.

José Andrés wins the ‘Oscar’

T

he Asturian chef, José Andrés, continues to do a brilliant job of representing Spanish gastronomy in the United States.

The James Beard foundation in New York has awarded him the country’s most important culinary prize, the ‘Oscar’ for chefs. The chef is now promoting the Instituto Culinario Español in the land of opportunities.

La Fundación James Beard de Nueva York le ha concedido el premio culinario más importante del país, el ‘Oscar’ de los chefs. Sushi + Tapa = Rolling Pin

The secret for cooking a good Spanish omelette is, without doubt, the availability of good raw materials, especially when it comes to the potatoes. There are many varieties, but one of the best is those cultivated here in Álava.

My vegetable layers are the fruit of a process of research. The potatoes, the carrots, the beetroot and the peppers are turned into a snack format during the process.

I’ve called the fusion of sushi and tapa, rulo (rolling pin). It’s possible to capture the essence of the taste of any typical dish in barely a bite such as this one.

Vitoria has taken over from San Sebastián as the leading city for gastronomy in the Basque Country. It wasn’t an easy achievement, because our tradition is full of great masters who have opened up the way for new generations.

El secreto para cocinar una buena tortilla española es, sin duda, disponer de una buena materia prima, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a las patatas. Existen muchas variedades, pero una de las mejores que existen es la que se cultiva aquí, en Álava.

Mis láminas vegetales son el fruto de un proceso de investigación.

Las patatas, las zanahorias, las remolachas o los pimientos se transforman al formato snack durante ese proceso.

He bautizado como rulo a la fusión del sushi y la tapa. Es posible capturar la esencia del sabor de cualquier plato típico en apenas un bocado como éste.

Vitoria ha tomado el relevo de San Sebastián a la hora de liderar la gastronomía del País Vasco, y no era fácil lograrlo, porque nuestra tradición está llena de grandes maestros que han abierto el camino de las nuevas generaciones.

Language tourists THE DRIVE FOR SPANISH IS PROMPTING THE ARRIVAL OF THOUSANDS OF TOURISTS. LA PUJANZA DEL CASTELLANO IMPULSA LA LLEGADA DE MILES DE TURISTAS. WORDS BY LUCÍA MANRIQUE PEOPLE ARE TRAVELLING MORE THAN EVER to learn a language. It can be seen especially in Spain, where each year around 240,000 foreigners come with the goal of learning or perfecting the language. With more than 400 million Spanish speakers around the world, Castilian Spanish is gradually gaining increasing importance as an international language.

Back in July of 2009, some Ministries drew up a Plan de Promoción de Turismo Cultural 2009-2012 to develop Spanish cultural products overseas, among them language tourism. Based on this project, several of the country’s autonomous regions have developed different strategies for promoting themselves. In Andalucia, the region that hosts the most tourists, they have launched their own Strategic plan for language tourism which is aimed at reinforcing its No 1 position as a language destination. For its part, the Valencia region hosted on 5 May the international conference, the International House Agent Workshop, the biggest language tourism event in the world. Madrid has also begun, in March, an initiative called Live the experience – Madrid Art and Culture and Spanish for Professionals with the goal of promoting tourism in the city, the third favourite destination for foreigners. In Castilla y León they have gone a step further. The region has presented itself to US universities in Iowa, Maryland and California as an ideal destination for learning the language of Cervantes.

LA GENTE VIAJA, CADA VEZ MÁS, para aprender una lengua. Algo que se nota especialmente en España, donde cada año llegan alrededor de 240.000 extranjeros con el objetivo de aprender o perfeccionar el idioma. Con más de 400 millones de hablantes en todo el mundo, el castellano va ganando paulatinamente más importancia como lengua internacional.

Ya en julio de 2009, varios Ministerios el Plan de Promoción de Turismo Cultural 2009-2012 para fomentar los productos culturales españoles en el exterior, entre ellos el turismo idiomático. A raíz de este proyecto, varias regiones han desarrollado diferentes estrategias para promocionarse. Desde Andalucía, la comunidad que más turistas acoge, se ha lanzado el Plan Estratégico del Turismo Idiomático, que pretende reforzar su primera posición como destino idiomático.

La Comunidad Valenciana, por su parte, albergó el pasado 5 de mayo el congreso International House Agent Workshop, el mayor evento de turismo idiomático del mundo. Madrid también puso en marcha, el marzo pasado, las iniciativas Vive la ExperienciaMadrid Arte y Cultura y Español para Profesionales, con el objetivo de fomentar el turismo en la ciudad, tercer destino preferido por los extranjeros. Castilla y León, por su parte, ha dado un paso más allá. Se ha presentado en las universidades norteamericanas de Iowa, Maryland y California como un destino idóneo para el aprendizaje de la lengua de Cervantes.

BM: Half Spanish, half English, which part pulls harder with your music?

DM: The English. The music I grew up has been British, and when it comes to playing or expressing myself that’s the one that comes out.

BM: When you compose, does the English come out naturally?

DM: In the end singing is expressing the side you can’t express on speaking. In my case it’s the subconscious and emotional side.

BM: What adjective would you give to your songs?

DM: They have a little of that point of positive energy, of a travelling spirit, free…

In total, there are five million students of Spanish. One of the advantages is that the two languages are very similar in their vocabulary (The Ethnologue database puts it at 90%). But every head has its tail, and in this case they are the false friends, that’s to say words with a very similar form but with different meanings. As a result, it’s very common to hear in class phrases like yo acuerdo temprano [ I agree, instead of I get up (me levanto) early ] llevé el coche roto a la oficina (taller), (I took the broken-down car to the office, instead of workshop), or vamos brincar con las manos (we’re going to jump (instead of do things) with our hands. Teachers of Spanish have their work cut out here.

A partir de 2005, con la Ley del Español, esos lazos se formalizaron siendo una asignatura obligatoria en las escuelas de enseñanza pública media de todo el país. En total, hay cinco millones de estudiantes de español. Una de sus ventajas es que las dos lenguas presentan una gran similitud léxica -Ethnologue la cifra casi en un 90%-. Pero toda cara tiene su cruz, y en este caso un problema son los falsos amigos, es decir, las palabras con una forma muy parecida pero de significados diferentes. Así, es frecuente oír en las clases yo acuerdo temprano (me levanto temprano), llevé el coche roto a la oficina (taller), o vamos brincar con las manos (hagamos manualidades).

BM: Mitad español, mitad inglés, ¿qué parte tira más en la música?

DM: La inglesa. La música con la que me he criado ha sido británica, y a la hora de tocar o expresarme, es lo que me sale.

BM: Cuando compones, ¿te sale con naturalidad en inglés?

For the second consecutive month solar energy in May beat previous levels of consumption in Spain.

Electricity from the sun in April accounted for 4.2 % of national demand and in May that percentage rose to 4.5%.

The previous record had been set in June 2010 at 4%.

However, its development is still very limited. Among the reasons put forward are the lack of ecological awareness and the need for high initial investments. Germany, even though it can count on little solar radiation, concentrates around 62% of the solar potential installed on the continent.

/ eyeos / cloud computing eyeOS started from scratch in 2005 and in little time its mysterious title started to sneak in, by surprise, among the names of the giants of computing such as Google and Microsoft. People talked about eyeOS as a direct competitor of these companies in the field of virtual desktops. They were the embryonic times of cloud computing, the operating system of the future, the technology that in a few years would let users forget about hard discs and local servers and move to the internet cloud. Behind eyeOS were two young 17 year olds, Pau García-Milà and Marc Cercó. Now there are dozens of state of the art companies in the cloud computing sector in the world, but back then the battlefield was open. Today it’s a company whose product has been downloaded more than 800,000 times and has 15,000 members in communities distributed in 67 countries, as well as more than a million users on demo servers. Their main weapon in fighting their rivals: with eyeOS users maintain the privacy of their data.

Frogtek was born from a two-pronged objective: economic and social. Its raison d’etre consists in the implementation of mobile devices (at more than a the moment they are working with million users Android) with multiple tools for accounting and management aimed on demo servers at small and medium size enterprises in developing countries. At times the idea turns out to be brilliant precisely because of the personal effort in making it brilliant. At other times the great idea has already occurred to someone else before; that’s part of the innovation game

International expansion The world today is globalized and we have to sell abroad. Depending on the project, it can be more or less easy, but it nearly always shows that all things are sellable abroad if you make sufficient effort. Sticking to the local market is like remaining with the crumbs of something that could be so much bigger, and perhaps these crumbs will not be enough to feed us.

Dicen que uno sabe que tiene una gran idea cuándo siente “vértigo en el estómago”. Es la intuición de que se está haciendo algo interesante, más allá de las opiniones de terceros. A veces, la idea se convierte en brillante precisamente por el esfuerzo personal en hacerla brillante. Otras, la gran idea ya se le había ocurrido a otro antes; forma parte del juego de la innovación.

El mundo actual está globalizado y tenemos que vender hacia fuera. Dependiendo del proyecto, puede ser más o menos fácil, pero casi siempre se demuestra que todo es vendible fuera si se hace el esfuerzo adecuado. Quedarse con el mercado local es como quedarse con las miguitas de algo que podría ser mucho más grande, y tal vez esas miguitas no sean suficientes para darnos de comer.

Having good sails and oars (excellent ideas, professionals and contacts) helps you reach a good port, but the force of nature is always more powerful.

Existen golpes de buena y mala suerte, trabajo duro, paciencia, encuentros imprevistos, fiestas en las que se conoce a la persona clave, situaciones que hacen que el rumbo de la nave varíe. Tener buenas velas y remos (excelentes ideas, profesionales y relaciones) ayuda a que llegue a buen puerto, pero la fuerza de la naturaleza siempre es más poderosa.

The change from a start-up to a consolidated company is difficult to define. For me, a company can be consolidated in some markets but a start-up in others. At business level, I would say it stops being a start-up when you feel that the company begins to be like an independent organism and stops being your baby.

El cambio de startup a empresa consolidada es difícil de definir. Para mí, un empresa puede estar consolidada en algunos mercados pero ser startup en otros. A nivel empresarial, yo diría que se deja de ser startup cuando sientes que la empresa empieza a ser como un organismo independiente y deja de ser tu bebé.

WHO THE HELL ARE THE BUSINESS ANGELS? by an anonymous business angel

Imagine that you can write commentaries on any web page, point to any content on the internet, even the minutest of details. But in this case it’s as if you really were writing on the actual screen of your computer, and that at the same time it can be seen by all your contacts.

That is exactly what Glass is, a tool – halfway to a social network- capable of creating an intermediate layer between the users and the content of the Internet, allowing for interaction and communication. Glass reshapes the frontiers of the network, superimposing a free and private glass and giving users the opportunity of expressing their opinions in the place of their choosing. In theory, it seems to be a must have application. And in practice, “it’s probably growing faster than Tuenti”, says one if its creators, Joaquín Ayuso, who was also a co-founder of the social network that won over young Spaniards (see BM#3 page 25).

Eso es exactamente Glass, una herramienta -a medio camino de la red social- capaz de crear una capa intermedia entre los usuarios y los contenidos de internet, permitiendo interactuar y comunicarse sobre ella. Glass redimensiona las fronteras de la red superponiendo un cristal libre y privado y dando la oportunidad a los usuarios de opinar en el lugar que ellos elijan. En la teoría, parece una aplicación necesaria.

Y en la práctica, “problamente está creciendo más rápido que Tuenti”, informa uno de sus creadores, Joaquín Ayuso, que también fue cofundador de la red social que conquistó a los jóvenes españoles. (ver BM#3 pag. 25).

Angel investors put their money into small companies with high potential for growth and international expansion. They push at the start and accompany development post start-up, until the business matures. That is when they pull out of the company, pick up their capital gains, and the cycle starts all over again.

At an intermediate level between seed capital (family, friends, and fools) and risk capital. The inversion slot wavers between 50,000 and 250,000 euros. Taking into account the high probabilities of a puncture in a start-up, they look to multiply their profits at least tenfold to compensate losses on losing horses.

Teniendo en cuenta las altas probabilidades de pinchazo de una startup, buscan multiplicar los beneficios al menos por diez para compensar las pérdidas de sus caballos perdedores.

They move in a herd, although there are also lone wolves. They concentrate in the large focal points of tech businesses, whose romantic myth is Silicon Valley. They also usually share investments to diversify risks. According to data from the IESE Business School, there are some 32 associations and 300 to 400 business angels operating in Spain.

Angel investors should know about the environment in which they move, but also be ready to follow their instincts. They should know the markets, the sectors and the trends, and be able to sense changes before they happen. Spanish start-ups Olé (the embryo of Terra), Microsiervos, Menéame, Tuenti, Buyvip, Privalia and Bubok received investments of this type when they began.

Se mueven en manada, aunque también existen lobos solitarios. Se concentran en los grandes focos empresariales tecnológicos, cuyo mito romántico es Silicon Valley. También suelen compartir inversiones para diversificar riesgos.

Según los datos de IESE Business School, en España existen alrededor de 32 asociaciones y 300-400 business angels operativos.

El inversor ángel debe conocer el medio en que se mueve, pero también seguir su instinto. Debe conocer los mercados, los sectores y las tendencias, e intuir los cambios antes de que se produzcan. Las startups españolas Olé (embrión de Terra), Microsiervos, Menéame, Tuenti, Buyvip, Privalia o Bubok recibieron inversiones de este tipo en sus inicios.

Following the trail of Twitter, from 2007 onwards several similar systems in Spanish emerged. Of all these only Picotea is still standing, having managed to differentiate itself in several ways. An ambience that’s more friendly and open, with the possibility of writing 160 (instead of 140) characters. Less chaos, although far less users.

In view of the fearsome rivalry surrounding generic social networks, the best option is to specialize within the market.

Nvivo is the result of this technology applied to live music and the news and interactions that spin around it: concerts, venues, groups and, of course, fans.

This is a social dating network focussed on women which offers more original ways than traditional online contact platforms. With Bookio it is the guys who propose ideas to the girls. From this point on, they can choose from one of the proposals they receive or instead put forward alternative ideas.

Se trata de una red social de dating enfocada a las mujeres y que ofrece mecanismos más originales en comparación con las plataformas tradicionales de contactos online. En Bookio son los chicos quienes proponen planes a las chicas.

A partir de ese punto, ellas pueden elegir alguno de las propuestas recibidas o bien proponer ideas alternativas.

/ FIABEE / Selective synchronization The cloud computing universe is permeable, and Fiabee has found a niche to grow. We are talking about an application that manages the organized chaos involved in keeping different archives within distinct locations and security mechanisms. Fiabee synchronizes, stores and provides access (both online and offline) via the same technological plan as the decentralized information, bringing the physical and virtual spaces together. In 2010, one of the most popular tech blogs in the world, TechCrunch, made mention of the Catalonia company, and Google spent little time in proposing to them the adaptation of their app to the Chrome navigator. Risk capital has already knocked at their door.

Erasmusu More than 20,000 users in more than 150 countries confirm that the creation of a social network for exchange students was a good idea. Erasmusu has uploaded more than 100,000 photos and carries information about more than 36,000 cities and 6,000 universities.

Above all it offers the possibility of knowing and sharing experiences in a unified way.

Erasmusu cuenta con más de 100.000 fotografías y con información sobre más de 36.000 ciudades y 6.000 universidades. / Bubok / Printing on demand Little more than three years old, and having consolidated on the Iberian Peninsula market, this online selfpublishing house and book store bases itself on printing on demand.

Bubok has already become a business benchmark in the sector and has started its international expansion. It has just signed an alliance agreement with the Service Point Solutions (SPS) group aimed at making use over two years of SPS’s printing network in 44 countries.

Bubok ended 2010 with sales of more than one million euros in Spain and Portugal, and through its platform it published some 15,000 works in the year – around 20% of the titles edited in Spain.

Amboto has its bases in Bilbao and Boston, and is scheduled to arrive soon in San Francisco, Chile, Mexico and London.

s pring in Madrid is brief. You hardly have time to savour it before the thermometer shoots up and the summer bursts onto the scene without asking. But this morning is undoubtedly springlike, and the passers-by studying the programmes at the Teatro Real (Theatre Royal) would be jealous if they knew where I was headed.

The part that’s on show in this bright apartment is elegant; it’s a space full of La Espert; scripts on the table - future projects perhaps?

There’s also a sign of Almodóvar beneath other documents, and behind the sofa, Alberti? Hardly any photos of her; a few casual ones with friends, others with members of her family, and just one of her reciting on stage. Immersed in her own world, in her living space, she will be coming up in a moment, her housekeeper, Marta, tells me.

Nuria talks with the photographer about the light in her home. She knows it well; she uses it as she uses her gaze. Fascinated, I can understand from watching her delivery how this woman who can get so much enjoyment from a simple photo session puts her soul into a script and gives it life.

JULIA DE CASTRO: Let’s talk about more than six decades on the boards, of a career that has been sated with awards. Yet, you don’t stop premiering daring projects …

NÚRIA ESPERT: The theatre gives me life. My existence has been composed of the theatre and a minuscule group of five people. I

cannot live without either of the two. If, at this point, after such a long career to which you have dedicated so much passion and effort, and that has given so much joy and so much suffering, you put yourself into a new project and you have the authority to choose what you want to do, it’s logical that you opt for something that is not expected. Not long ago I decided on a youth poem of Shakespeare [she is taking about The Rape of Lucrece].

I thought that it could give rise to a truly theatrical work; although it was interpreted by just one person, in this case me.

JC: Why did you put yourself in the hands of a director as young as Miguel del Arco?

NE: It’s been a very difficult process. I’ve had some fabulous help from him. It was a miracle thinking of him because I had never seen any of his work. I only knew how he worked with actors. A companion told me in minute detail about what he had done with La función por hacer [winner of the Max award for the best theatrical performance of 2011]. I knew he was the right person; the one I needed for this so different project. Miguel is a super talent..

JC: I read in your memoirs that you don’t like what you’ve done in films. Should an actor resign herself to her limitations or fight against them?

NE: If these limitations are saveable, she should fight to the death. But if someone wants to be a ballerina and weighs 120 kg, it’s not a question of getting thinner; it’s a destiny that doesn’t correspond for her.

JC: When young actresses like Irene Escolar say in their interviews: “I want to be like Nuria Espert,” what does Nuria Espert think?

NE: I’m very flattered, because she’s a girl who I’ve known since she was small and I had a right battle with her mother when she said she wanted to be an actress.

Her mother said that it was a very tough career, in which you suffer a lot. I got angry. “Do you think that when a Spanish actor is called to do a session on television she is not happier than when Meryl Streep is offered a script? You don’t know who is much happier?”

L a primavera en Madrid es breve, apenas puede saborearse cuando los termómetros se han disparado y el verano irrumpe sin preguntar. Pero esta mañana es indiscutiblemente primaveral, y los transeúntes que estudian la programación del Teatro Real tendrían celos si supieran hacia donde me dirijo. La zona visible del luminoso apartamento es elegante; es un espacio lleno de la Espert; textos sobre la mesa -¿quizá futuros proyectos? Helmut Newton a la vista como reclamo del que espera a la diva.

También se advierte a Almodóvar bajo otros documentos, y tras el sofá, ¿Alberti? Apenas imágenes de ella, quizá algunas fotografías casuales con amigos, otras con familiares, y tan solo una de Núria declamando sobre las tablas.

Inmersa ya en su mundo, en su espacio vital, Marta me avisa que la actriz subirá a en un momento. Habla con la fotógrafa sobre la luz de su propia casa, la conoce bien, la utiliza como utiliza su mirada. Yo comprendo, observando su entrega, embobada, por qué esa mujer que disfruta tanto con una sencilla sesión, pone su alma ante un texto y le da vida.

JULIA DE CASTRO: Hablamos de más de seis décadas sobre las tablas, de una carrera premiada hasta la saciedad. Sin embargo, usted no deja de estrenar proyectos arriesgados…

NÚRIA ESPERT: El teatro me da vida. Mi existencia ha estado compuesta del teatro y un grupo minúsculo de cinco personas.

No puedo vivir sin ninguna de

las dos cosas. Si a estas alturas, tras una carrera tan larga, a la que has dedicado tanta pasión y esfuerzo, y que me ha dado tantas alegrías y tantísimos sufrimientos, te metes en un nuevo proyecto y tienes la potestad de elegir lo que quieres hacer, es lógico que te decantes por algo que no se espera. Hace poco decidí un poema de juventud de Shakespeare [habla de La violación de Lucrecia]. Pensé que podía dar pie a una verdadera obra teatral, aunque lo interprete una sola persona, en este caso yo.

JC: ¿Por qué te pusiste en manos de un director tan joven como Miguel del Arco?

NE: Ha sido proceso durísimo, he tenido una ayuda fabulosa por su parte. Fue un milagro pensar en él porque no había visto ningún trabajo suyo, sólo sabía cómo trabajaba con los actores. Una compañera me había contado con pelos y señales lo que había hecho en La función por hacer [Premio Max a Mejor Espectáculo de Teatro 2011]. Supe que era la persona adecuada, la que necesitaba para este proyecto tan diferente. Miguel es un talentazo.

JC: Leo en sus memorias que no le gusta su resultado en cine. ¿Un actor debe resignarse a sus limitaciones o luchar contra ellas?

NE: Si esas limitaciones son salvables, debe luchar a muerte.

Pero si alguien quiere ser bailarina y pesa 120 kg, no es un problema de adelgazar, es un destino que no le corresponde.

JC: Cuando actrices jóvenes como Irene Escolar dicen en sus entrevistas: “Quiero ser como Nuria Espert” ¿Qué piensa Nuria Espert?

NE: Me halaga muchísimo porque es una niña que conozco desde pequeña y tuve una batalla campal con su madre cuando dijo que quería ser actriz. Su madre decía que era una carrera muy dura, en la que se sufre muchísimo. Yo me enfadé: ¿“Tu crees que cuando a un actor español le llaman para hacer una sesión en televisión no está más contento que cuando a Meryl Streep le ofrecen un guión, no sabes que es mucho más feliz?”

n uria is delicate, smiling, and enthusiastic in her responses. She hypnotizes me with her memories, she emanates a delicious fragility that softens and seduces the most conventional of phrases. She is an actress who has helped dozens of shows get off the ground, some of them censured, others prohibited. An artist who, in spite of her success and indisputable recognition, suffered harassment from a dying and dangerous dictatorship, one that in its last years went as far as throwing out the collection of plays the day before they were due for a premiere.

In front of her, listening to her, I can see that her fragility is built on strong pillars that have supported the hardest of knocks and failures, and on which have also been raised the triumphs and the most transcendental and iconic of works of the last few decades.

JC: Apart from being an actress, you have also been a businesswoman and a director. What do you think of the theatre scene at the moment?

NE: They say that everyone talks about how the fair is for them. These last years, when Spain has become immersed in this world economic chaos that has caused so much harm, I ask myself how it is possible that we are living through a period of great strength in the theatre, of great spectacle, of astonishing increases in the number of spectators, and a growing interest

among the media in the theatre.

I think it’s a magnificent revival.

JC: And in Madrid, do you notice in particular this demand for the theatre?

NE: A Catalan colleague who worked with me on La casa de Bernarda Alba told me that in Barcelona they haven’t noticed any changes recently. Many times it has been the opposite, so many periods when Barcelona has been ahead of Madrid as far as initiatives and risk are concerned. But now, it’s not so. At the moment there is an awakening and a desire that is not shared by my city, Barcelona. Although I see myself as a Madrileña by choice (she laughs). Anyway, on our tours we can see that the hunger there is for theatre outside Madrid is also spectacular.

JC: You have spent long periods directing in London. Is a theatre public like the English one that fills a matinee session unthinkable in Spain?

NE: This comes from schools, from education, from the love for a language, from custom and from habit. For me English theatre is the best in the world. They cannot live without theatre. And it’s very rare that a cultured English person does not go to the theatre once a week.

It’s very rare, and I don’t know any who don’t.

JC: How do you achieve a faithful following?

NE: By demanding. If someone is let down and disapointed three times in a row, that person is not going to go near the particular actor or actress again.

I remember an anecdote from Armando [her husband, the actor and businessman Armando Moreno, who died in 1994], after watching a catastrophe of a play.

There were very few people, and when the lights went back on and we were applauding our colleagues feebly, he said to me: “take a good look at the faces of these spectators, because they will never return to the theatre again”. That same risk faces all theatres. And it’s also happened with cinemas, although I think they are perhaps paying some exaggerated consequences.

Es una actriz que ha sacado adelante decenas de espectáculos, algunos censurados, otros prohibidos. Una artista que a pesar de su éxito y su reconocimiento indiscutible sufrió el acoso de una agonizante dictadura, peligrosa, que en sus últimos años la forzó a tirar la escenografía de algunas obras a un día del estreno. Frente a ella, escuchándola, ahora entiendo que esa fragilidad está construida sobre pilares fuertes que han soportado los golpes y los fracasos más duros, pero sobre los que también se han levantado los triunfos y las obras más trascendentes y emblemáticas de las últimas décadas.

JC: Además de actriz, usted ha sido empresaria y directora. ¿Qué opina del panorama teatral en este momento?

NE: Dicen que cada uno habla según le va la feria. Estos últimos años, cuando España se ha sumergido en ese caos mundial económico que tanto daño ocasiona, me pregunto cómo es posible que estemos viviendo una época de gran pujanza teatral, de grandes espectáculos, de incremento pasmoso del número de espectadores y de creciente interés de los medios por el teatro.

Creo que hay un resurgir magnífico.

JC: ¿Y en Madrid, nota especialmente esa demanda teatral?

NE: Me decía una compañera catalana que trabajó conmigo en La casa de Bernarda Alba que en Barcelona no han notado cambios últimamente. Tantas veces ha sido al revés, tantos períodos Barcelona ha ido por delante a Madrid en cuanto a iniciativas y a riesgo… Pero ahora no, no es así, en este momento aquí hay un despertar y unas ganas que ahora no las comparte mi ciudad, Barcelona. Aunque yo me considero madrileña por decisión (risas).

De todas formas, en nuestras giras comprobamos que el hambre de teatro que hay fuera de Madrid también es espectacular.

JC: Usted ha pasado largos períodos en Londres dirigiendo. ¿Es impensable en España un público teatral como el inglés, que llena una sesión matinal?

NE: Esto se hace desde el colegio, desde la educación, desde el amor por una lengua, desde la costumbre y el hábito. Para mí el inglés es el mejor teatro del mundo. No pueden vivir sin teatro. Y es muy raro que un inglés culto no vaya al teatro una vez a la semana, es rarísimo, yo no conozco a ninguno.

JC: ¿Cómo se consigue un público fiel?

NE: Con exigencia. Como a alguien lo defraudes tres veces seguidas, esa persona no se vuelve a acercar. Recuerdo una anécdota con Armando [su marido, el actor y empresario Armando Moreno, fallecido en 1994], viendo una obra catastrófica. Había muy poca gente y cuando se encendieron las luces y estábamos aplaudiendo tibiamente a los compañeros, él me dijo: “Mira bien la cara de estos espectadores, porque estos no volverán al teatro jamás”. Ese mismo riesgo lo corren todos los teatros.

Y le ha ocurrido también al cine, aunque creo que está pagando unas consecuencias quizá exageradas.

he has written the history of theatre under her feet. We always tend to distort the height of a great actress, precisely because she is big in talent.

I expected she would be two metres tall, but her warm kiss at the start of the interview had, in effect, made me lean over. Now, the intimacy of the meeting is established when she takes my hand while she tells me an anecdote. We talk animatedly, and I decide to dig into the most personal side, into the roots of the profession of an actress. I can’t stop worrying about the torpid movements of the photographer’s tripods and panels so near a screen with three mirrors that show three images. It’s a paradox because no sooner than entering and leaving this place you are received by and dispatched by your own image, a trinity of figures that reveals to us how many different characters we can really be if we want.

JC: You have taken on all sorts of character roles, tragic and comic, men and women..…. Is there one still left in the tank?

NE: Of course. I like the great international repertoire: Hedda Gabler, Lady Macbeth, Cleopatra… but you can’t do everything. I have not done these, and I regret it, but I have done others. I think about Cleopatra and it seems unforgivable. Neither have I done any Strindberg, nor Molière, nor Goldoni. On the other hand, I’ve done a lot of O’Neill because

I was very young then and I loved him. Perhaps I could have changed some of his works for Antony and Cleopatra, although I have played other Shakespeare roles in Hamlet and The Tempest.

There has always been a need to select.

JC: Thinking of all the companions you have had on the stage, how would you describe an actor?

NE: Every actor is unique. He arrives on the set with everything that he is, what he thinks; with all that he has read and lived, with his state of mind.

That’s part of what makes me passionate about the theatre, the work with the actors, to see them develop their powers.

I work with people who have the same love for the theatre as I have.

JC: You started in the theatre without any vocation, but you were always receptive to the influences of the maestros you shared the stage with. What do you think about the training of an actor?

NE: For many years I’ve said that I was self-taught, but right now that seems a very serious error. Only Tarzan was selftaught, his only school being the monkey Chita. I didn’t go to any academies, but working every day with magnificent actors, with one director after another, is a way of learning. You learn not only what you should do, but also what you shouldn’t do. The companions who you work with are your teachers.

JC: What’s the secret. Where is the balance in a career?

NE: You should have the intelligence to be aware of everything that you still have to learn. Instead of thinking, as I did from a very young age, that success is synonymous with not needing to improve any more, and that what you have to do is stay as you are. I continue hoping that this will help me become a better actress. Change entails danger, that your public will abandon you, that you will disconcert the critics. And the danger of being alone in the vanguard, and looking behind and seeing that nobody is following you.

Siempre tendemos a falsear el tamaño de una gran actriz precisamente porque es grande en talento. Yo esperaba que midiera dos metros, pero su cálido beso al inicio de la entrevista había demandado, en efecto, mi inclinación. Ahora, la intimidad del encuentro se constata cuando ella toma mi mano mientras cuenta una anécdota. Conversamos animadas, y decido adentrarme en lo más personal, en la profesión de actriz desde su raíz.

No dejo de temer por los torpes movimientos que esos trípodes y paneles hacen tan cerca del biombo del pasillo, un biombo que parece un tríptico con tres imágenes que forman, en realidad, una sola. Es paradójico, porque nada más entrar y salir de este lugar te recibe y despide tu misma imagen, una trinidad que nos desvela cuántas personas o personajes podemos realmente ser si lo deseamos.

JC: Usted ha abarcado personajes de todo tipo; trágicos y cómicos, hombres y mujeres…. ¿Se le ha quedado alguno en el tintero?

NE: Claro que sí. A mí me gusta el gran repertorio internacional: Hedda Gabler, Lady Macbeth, Cleopatra… pero no se puede hacer todo. No he hecho estos, y lo lamento, pero he hecho otros. Pienso en Cleopatra y me parece imperdonable. Tampoco he hecho ningún Strindberg, ni Molière, ni Gol-

doni. En cambio, he hecho mucho O’Neill porque entonces era muy joven y me encantaba.

Quizá podría haber cambiado alguna de sus obras por Antonio y Cleopatra, aunque he interpretado otras de Shakespeare, Hamlet y La tempestad. Ha habido siempre una elección necesaria.

JC: Pensando en todos los compañeros que ha tenido en escena. ¿Cómo describe al actor?

NE: Cada actor es único. Llega al escenario con todo lo que es, lo que piensa; con todo lo que ha leído y ha vivido, con su estado de ánimo. Eso es parte de lo que me apasiona del teatro, el trabajo con los actores, verles desarrollar sus facultades. Trabajo con gente que tiene por el teatro el mismo amor que tengo yo.

JC: Se inició en el teatro sin vocación, pero siempre fue receptiva a la influencia de los maestros con los que compartía escenario ¿Qué opina de la formación del actor?

NE: Durante muchos años he dicho que era autodidacta, pero en este momento me parece un error gravísimo. Autodidacta no hay más que Tarzán, cuya única escuela era la mona Chita. Yo no acudí a academias, pero estar trabajando todos los días con actores magníficos, con un director tras otro, es una manera de aprender.

Aprendes no solo lo que se debe hacer, sino lo que no se debe. Los compañeros con los que trabajas son tus maestros.

JC: ¿Cuál es el secreto, dónde está el equilibrio de una carrera?

NE: Debes tener la inteligencia de saber todo lo que te falta por aprender, en vez de pensar que el éxito, que yo desde muy joven, es sinónimo de que ya no necesitas mejorar y lo que hay que hacer es mantener lo que eres. Yo sigo esperando que me ayuden a ser mejor actriz. El cambio entraña peligros, de que tu público te abandone, de desconcertar a los críticos. Y el peligro de quedarte sola haciendo vanguardia, y mirar hacia atrás y que nadie te siga.

ho really is Lucio Urtubia? For some days now I’ve not stopped asking myself the question. I had just landed in Paris with the sole aim of interviewing one of the most enigmatic characters who I had never even heard about before. A good friend, a journalist, had told me some time back that he had had the opportunity to meet an octogenarian Spanish anarchist at a conference he had given on his life story at Oxford University. The following day he rang me to tell me about it.

I was bowled over. How was it possible that hardly anybody knew the story of a construction worker who managed to swindle the most powerful bank on the planet to raise funds for the anarchist cause and barely did any time in prison? Since that moment, I had always had it in mind to take advantage of a trip to Paris to meet Lucio.

As soon as I had the opportunity, I bought the tickets to fly to the ‘City of Light’. Having arrived early, I headed off for the working class district of Belleville. There, at No 42 on the Rue des Cascades, I saw written on the nameplate for the building ‘Space Louis Michel’. I guess that for Lucio the French anarchist, known for his role during the Paris Commune (of 1871), the building was one of his ideological points of reference. As the door was open, I walked straight in. There was Lucio, waiting for me at the end of the hall, wearing a beret on which stood out an A for anarchist embroidered in red. He explained to me that the place was a social space for anyone who wants to enter and visit him or to take part in one of the conferences that he organizes. Lucio lives in the part above, and his wife Anne and his daughter Juliette in other apartments alongside the centre. “We live apart because my wife is insupportable, but I love her a lot. Although we get together for everything, each of us is temperamental.”

uién es realmente Lucio Urtubia?

Hacía varios días que no dejaba de hacerme esta pregunta. Acababa de aterrizar en París con el único propósito de entrevistar a uno de los personajes más enigmáticos de los que nunca antes había oído hablar. Un buen amigo periodista me había comentado en una ocasión que había conocido a un anarquista octogenario español en una conferencia impartida sobre la historia de su vida en la Universidad de Oxford. Al día siguiente, me llamó para contármelo. Me quedé noqueado. ¿Cómo era posible que casi nadie supiera la historia de un albañil que logró estafar al banco más poderoso del planeta con el propósito de recaudar fondos para la causa anarquista y apenas pasó por prisión? Desde entonces, siempre había tenido en mente aprovechar cualquier viaje a París para conocer a Lucio. En cuanto tuve la ocasión, compré los billetes para volar hacia la ‘ciudad de la luz’. Como llegué temprano me dirigí al barrio obrero de Belleville.

Al llegar al número 42 de la Rue Des Cascades vi que en el letrero que daba nombre al edificio estaba inscrito ‘Space Louis Michel’ -supuse que para Lucio la anarquista francesa, conocida por su papel durante la Comuna de París, era uno de sus referentes ideológicos-.

Como la puerta estaba abierta, entré directamente. Ahí estaba Lucio, esperándome al fondo de la sala con una txapela en la que se destacaba una A de anarquía bordada en rojo. Me explicó que el local era

un espacio social en el que entraba quien quería para visitarle o para participar en las conferencias que suelen organizarse. Lucio vive en la parte de arriba y su mujer Anne y su hija Juliette habitan en otros pisos colindantes al centro. “Vivimos separados porque mi mujer es insoportable, pero la quiero mucho. Aunque nos juntamos para todo, tenemos nuestros temperamentos cada uno”. Me sorprende en la personalidad de Lucio esa dicotomía del ‘sí, pero no’ que lleva intrínseca y que ha estado tan presente en su forma de actuar ante la vida. Después de un breve respiro de bienvenida, comenzamos la charla. Lo que viene a continuación es un viaje clandestino al pasado reciente de los movimientos internacionales subversivos y anti sistema en boca de uno de uno de sus protagonistas.

PARÍS, EN BUSCA DE LA LIBERTAD Y EL PROGRESO “La pobreza fue mi riqueza porque no me costó perder el respeto por el orden establecido. ¿Cómo iba yo a respetar a esa cuadrilla de jerifantes? La iglesia, el fascismo, los carlistas y el gobierno de Franco.

Todos criminales”. Para comprender este resentir de Lucio, hay que remontarse a los años 40 y 50 en España, posteriores a la Guerra Civil y en pleno régimen franquista.

Lucio había nacido en el seno de una familia muy modesta en la localidad navarra de Cascante. Desde pequeño, su principal preocupación era cómo llevarse algo a la boca por lo que empezó a robar.

Algunas veces le pillaron y pasó temporadas en la cárcel. Cuando cumplió la mayoría de edad, Lucio hizo el Servicio Militar Obligatorio en Logroño. Trabajaba junto con otros compañeros en la cantina donde robaban del almacén todo lo que podían para venderlo en el mercado negro. Les descubrieron y Lucio tuvo que desertar porque sabía que si le apresaban el castigo era la muerte. Sin pensárselo dos veces huyó rumbo a París donde vivía su hermana Satur. “Cada vez estoy más orgulloso de no haber trabajado para aquella gentuza y de haber robado”, afirma rotundamente Lucio. Ya desde joven, el navarro tenía el deseo de vivir en Francia porque suponía “un pro-

greso” para la época: “Había trabajo, se respiraba libertad”. En el país vecino, muchos españoles, principalmente republicanos y anarquistas, habían luchado por la liberación del país durante La Résistance.

La crema de la intelectualidad del momento se movía por los círculos anarquistas; Albert Camus, André Bretón, George Brassens, entre otros, frecuentaban la sede de la Confederación Nacional del Trabajo, situada en el 24 de la Rue de Sainte-Marthe. Fue allí donde Lucio les conoció personalmente, en las conferencias que se organizan todas las tardes. “En uno de los trabajos me preguntaron mis compañeros de qué ideología era.

Les dije que comunista. Ellos se rieron y me contestaron que qué cojones iba a ser yo comunista, que era anarquista”. A partir de entonces Lucio comienza a tratar tanto con intelectuales como con anarquistas, republicanos y otros exiliados españoles que pasaban por Sante-Marthe. “Esa gente me dio lo que soy, los conocimientos, la educación y la cultura”. De la noche a la mañana Lucio experimentó un cambio radical en sus convicciones ideológicas, aunque el gran paso estaba aún por llegar.

Un buen día, le propusieron albergar a Francesc Savaté, un anarquista catalán que venía del exilio y que había sido declarado como el mayor enemigo del régimen franquista. Durante el tiempo que convivieron, mantuvieron muchas conversaciones que terminaron in-

fluyendo aún más en la ideología de Lucio, quien se convirtió en un anarquista de acción. “No sé qué influencia tuvo hacia mí. Yo tenía 22 años y quizá tenía la inocencia necesaria para hacer las cosas.

Quico me cambió para siempre”. A Quico Savaté le detuvieron y le encarcelaron en Francia. Lucio, junto con otros compañeros, comenzó a atracar bancos para ganar dinero en pro de la causa anarquista, haciendo uso de la violencia y utilizando las armas que Quico le había dejado mientras estaba en la cárcel. Cuando El Quico salió de prisión, comprobó que Lucio había amasado una gran cantidad de dinero y le asesoró para repartirlo entre diferentes grupos clandestinos. Se había convertido en un Robin Hood que ayudaba a financiar a grupos anarquistas y a la lucha contra el franquismo renunciando a ser “millonario” en varias ocasiones. Poco tiempo después, Quico es asesinado tras un intento por volver a su Cataluña natal. Lucio vuelve a volcarse en su vida de albañil.

LOS FALSIFICADORES París, mayo de 1968. Lucio se ve envuelto en una ola de libertad y revueltas históricas en las que conoce a su futura mujer, Anne. Poco después, motivado por el espíritu revolucionario del mayo de París, decide montar una imprenta con varios compañeros en la que comienzan a producir propaganda revolucionaria, pero pronto se implican en una tarea mucho más peligrosa: la impresión de documentos de identidad y pasaportes falsos para refugiados y para gente que estaba perseguida. “Esta vía nos abrió las puertas para alquilar coches y pisos, crear cuentas bancarias…

Recuperábamos los papeles de la gente que moría en los hospitales y los utilizábamos para crear identidades falsas. Nos dimos cuenta de que podíamos hacer recuperaciones económicas sin pasar por la violencia”, subraya Lucio, a lo que añade: “Llegamos a tener unos conocimientos enormes de falsificación de documentos en Europa y en toda Sudamérica”.

his dichotomy of ‘yes, but no’ in the personality of Lucio surprised me, something that is intrinsic to him and has been ever present in the way he has lived his life. After a brief break for welcoming, we began chatting. What comes next is a clandestine trip to the recent past of international subversive and anti system movements from the mouth of one of its leading characters.

PARIS, IN SEARCH OF FREEDOM AND PROGRESS

“Poverty was my riches because it cost me nothing to lose my respect for the established order. How was I going to respect that gang of petty chiefs? The church, fascism, the Carlists and the government of Franco.

All of them criminals”. To understand the resentment of Lucio, one has to go back to the forties and fifties in Spain, after the Civil War and right in the middle of the Franco regime. Lucio was born into a very humble family in the Navarra village of Cascantes.

From when he was little, his main worry was how to fill his stomach, which is why he started stealing.

Sometimes they caught him and he spent short periods in jail. When he reached the age of majority, Lucio did his obligatory national service in Logroño. He worked with other companions in the canteen, where they stole all they could from the storehouse to sell on the black market.

When it was discovered what he was doing Lucio had to desert because he knew that if they imprisoned him the punishment would be death.

Without thinking about it twice, he fled in the direction of Paris where his sister Satur lived. “I’m forever more proud of not working for that scum and for stealing,” Lucio says firmly.

Ever since his youth the lad from Navarra had wanted to live in France as it signified “progress” at that time.

“There was work, one breathed freedom”. There were many Spaniards in the neighbouring country, mainly republicans and anarchists, who had fought for the liberation of France with the Resistance. The cream of the intellectuals at the time moved in anarchist circles: Albert Camus, André Bretón, and George Brassens, among others, frequented the headquarters of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (the exiled anarchist Spanish trade union) located at No 24 Rue de Sainte-Marthe. It was there that Lucio got to know them personally, at the meetings they organized every evening. “At one of my jobs my companions asked me what my ideology was. I told them I was a Communist.

They laughed and said how the fuck could I be a Communist, that I was an anarchist”. From then on Lucio began to mix as much with intellectuals as he did with anarchists, republicans and other Spanish exiles who passed through the doors of Sante-Marthe.

“Those people taught me who I am, passing on the knowledge, the education and the culture”. Overnight Lucio underwent a radical change in his ideological convictions, although the big step was still to come. One day, it was suggested to him that he look after Francesc (Quico) Savaté, an anarchist from Catalonia who had gone into exile and been declared public enemy number one by the Franco regime. During the time they lived together, they had many conversations that ended up influencing the ideology of Lucio even more.

He turned into an anarchist of action.

“I don’t know how much influence he had on me. I was 22 years old and perhaps had the necessary innocence to do things. Quico changed me for ever”. Quico Savaté was arrested and jailed in France. Along with other companions, Lucio began attacking banks to raise money for the anarchist cause. They used violence and arms that Quico had left them when he went to jail. When El Quico left prison he found out that Lucio had amassed a large quantity of money and he advised him on handing it out to different clandestine groups. Lucio had become a Robin Hood who helped to finance anarchist groups and the fight against the Franco regime, renouncing on several occasions his chance to be a “millionaire.” Shortly afterwards Quico was assassinated after trying

to return to the Catalonia of his birth.

Lucio went back to the life of a construction worker.

THE FORGERS

Paris, May 1968. Lucio found himself wrapped up in a wave of freedom and historic revolts during which he met his future wife, Anne. Shortly after, motivated by the revolutionary spirit of that May in Paris, he decided to set up a printing press with various companions with which they started to produce revolutionary propaganda.

But soon he would be implicated in a much more dangerous task: printing fake identity papers and passports for refugees and people who were being chased. “That channel opened the doors for us for renting cars and apartments, creating bank accounts…

We got hold of the papers of people who had died in hospital and used them to falsify identities. We realized we could recoup money without resorting to violence”, pointed out Lucio. “We ended up with enormous knowledge about falsifying documents in Europe and all of South America”. By then Lucio was working with violent guerrilla groups such as the Tupamaros and The Red Brigades.

Despite all the intense militant activity, the construction worker from Navarra didn’t take time off work. “I attach a lot of importance to work in life. To be you have to do”, repeats Lucio. It’s one of his maxims.

Before May of 68, another revolution, the Cuban one, enjoyed a great following at the beginning. Among them was Lucio, who “would have given his

life” for the cause. For the forger from Navarra any utopia, any revolutionary act to change the system “merited all his efforts”. That’s why he tried.

After making friends with the Cuban ambassador in París, Rosa Simeón, he proposed a plan to her for destabilizing the US economy, by flooding the world with fake dollar bills. The ambassador took it seriously and arranged a meeting for him with El Che Guevara on one of the visits that he made at the time to París. Lucio gave Che various false dollar bills, explained to him the plan, and Che went back to Cuba with the proposal.

Weeks later, he got back to Lucio, turning down the idea because it didn’t seem to him to be enough to trouble such a big fish. Lucio ended up disillusioned with the revolutionary leader.

Che seemed to him to be a “cold” type, and he confesses that Fidel (Castro) seems to be “very intelligent but the devil personified”. Lucio’s proposal in favour of the Cuban revolutionary struggle might appear to be a utopia, but that is precisely what has always moved the man from Navarra: “You have to believe in the impossible to obtain the possible.

THE LAST BIG ‘STING’

In 1977 the team of forgers Lucio worked with had just developed a new source of financing, through the counterfeiting of bank cheques. They started with Spanish cheques, but seeing that the field of action was very limited Lucio got it into his head to forge travellers cheques issued by the leading bank in the world, the First National City Bank, given that they could be cashed throughout Europe. They were very difficult to copy but they managed it. “I was the boss of this company, I charged, gave and did. Banks cheat us as they want, which is why we had to give them stick”. The team worked in pairs, travelling to different European countries. When Lucio gave the order, on the same day and at the same time all of them entered the bank to cash forged cheques of the same denomination. The method worked so well that they managed to swindle more than 15 million dollars over several years from the world’s leading bank. Lucio insists that “the money didn’t go on prostitutes, shows, or anything like that.

Para el falsificador navarro cualquier utopía, cualquier acto revolucionario por cambiar el sistema “merecía todos sus esfuerzos”.

Por eso lo intentó. Tras hacer buenas migas con la embajadora de Cuba en París, Rosa Simeón, le propuso un plan para desestabilizar a la economía estadounidense inundando el mundo con billetes de dólar falsos. La embajadora no se lo tomó a broma y le citó con El Che Guevara en una de las visitas que el argentino realizó por pora aquel entonces a París. Lucio le dio varios billetes de dólar falsos, le explicó el plan y el Che se fue a Cuba con la propuesta. Semanas después, contestó a Lucio desestimando la idea porque le parecía que no era suficiente como para poner en apuros

a un pez tan gordo. Lucio quedó desencantado con el líder revolucionario, le pareció un tipo “frío” y es más, confiesa que Fidel le parece “inteligentísimo pero es el mismísimo diablo”. La propuesta de Lucio en pro de la lucha de la revolución cubana, podría parecer una utopía, pero precisamente son estas 'locuras' las que le han movido siempre al navarro: “Hay que creer en lo imposible para obtener lo posible. Si nos paramos y no hacemos nada, se acaba”.

EL ÚLTIMO GRAN ‘GOLPE’ En 1977, el equipo de falsificadores en el que trabajaba Lucio, acababa de desarrollar una nueva fuente de financiación mediante la falsificación de cheques bancarios. Comenzaron con cheques de bancos españoles pero viendo que su radio de acción era muy limitado Lucio se metió en la cabeza falsificar cheques de viaje del primer

banco del mundo, el por entonces First National City Bank, puesto que podían canjearse en toda Europa.

Eran muy difíciles de imitar pero lo consiguieron. “Yo era el patrón de esta empresa, cobraba, daba y hacía. Los bancos nos engañan como quieren, por eso había que darles caña”. Trabajaban en grupos de dos que viajaban a diferentes países europeos. Cuando Lucio daba la orden, el mismo día y a la misma hora, todos entraban al banco a cobrar cheques falsos de Citibank que tenían una misma numeración.

El método funcionaba tan bien que lograron estafar al primer banco del mundo más de 15 millones de dólares durante varios años.Lucio asegura que “el dinero no iba para putas, cabarets, ni nada de eso. Nadie se enriquecía. A mí la vida me ha enseñado a que no hacen falta fortunas porque si comes más o duermes más te estropeas”.

ne of the French police officers who was pursuing Lucio for years supports his declaration, saying that after many years of investigation the money from Citibank had three destinations: for those who carried out the operation, for the cause, and for prisoners who were in jail. For some years they stole a lot of money that ended up with revolutionary and violent groups like ETA, the Black Panthers, the Polisario Front and Tierra Libre, among others. But something went wrong with the forgery network, when a French gendarme managed to infiltrate it.

On 9 July the police captured Lucio Urtubia with a case full of travellers cheques from Citibank. They took him before the judge, but thanks to the intervention of one of the great lawyers of the time -Roland Duran, the future Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Francois Mitterand – coupled with a slip on the part of the examining magistrate dealing with the case, Lucio ended up spending only six months in prison. “In exchange I later helped Dumas in his political career. I had contacts from my days as an activist who he couldn’t reach and that helped me gain his protection”.

Lucio remained hidden in Paris for several months with a false identity, being constantly watched by the police. Meanwhile, the forgery network kept working around the world and the police were not able to find the printing plates. Legend has it that he hid some of them in the tombs at different cemeteries around Paris, among them the Pére-Lachaise. The American bank started to get nervous: they needed to have Lucio jailed and to find the printing plates to stop losing money. It was the final judgment for Lucio, and

it looked bleak for him. The court hearing began and Citibank wanted him sentenced to five years in prison, as well as demanding that he return all the stolen money and that he paid an indemnity for damages.

Lucio showed himself for what he is, defending what he has done for his ideals, not for making himself rich: “Theft is a revolutionary act, but if you do it for your own benefit it stops being so”. The construction worker once again began seeking a new utopia, making contact with Louis Janet, regarded as one of the great magistrates of France.

Janet, after investigating the case, maintained a cordial relationship with Lucio, showing curiosity for his struggle and his ideals. Years later, and by then a personal friend of Lucio, he went as far as saying that the man from Navarra “represented everything that I would have liked to have been”. Janet decided to call the judge in charge of the case and convinced him that the lawyers should negotiate between themselves. They reached an agreement by which Lucio was obliged to return the printing plates and his stock of travellers cheques from the US bank and to promise to put a stop to his forgery activities. In return, he got his freedom and a large sum of money.

In the end, Lucio turned out to be the winner. An unusual and historic case, that today is still difficult to believe. But when we talk of the anarchist construction worker, you have to be prepared to believe in the impossible. “Who would have told me that I would have ever stepped into a university in my life? Not even as a building worker. That is why I believe in utopias”, he tells me in answer to one of my last questions about how he came to go to Oxford to give a talk. The years of underground and latent activity finished a while back for Lucio, but his cause doesn’t cease. Nowadays he dedicates himself to telling his story and transmitting his ideals to youngsters from all round the world. They can’t stop being impressed by his words.

On some occasions they have even got tattoos with one of his maxims, “I don’t believe in anything and I believe in everything”. That’s Lucio Urtubia. Whoever would like to meet him only has to go and visit him in Paris. His door is always open.

no de los comisarios franceses que estuvo persiguiendo durante diez años a Lucio, aseguraba que , después de muchos años de investigación, el dinero de Citibank tenía tres destinos: para el que hacía la operación, para la causa y para los presos que estaban en la cárcel.

Durante unos años se robó mucho dinero que fue a parar a grupos revolucionarios y violentos como ETA, Los Panteras Negras, el Frente Polisario o Tierra Libre, entre otros. Pero algo falló en la red de falsificación colándose un infiltrado de la gendarmería francesa. El 9 de julio de 1980 la policía capturaba a Lucio Urtubia con un maletín lleno de cheques de viaje del Citibank. Le llevaron ante el juez y gracias a la intervención de uno de los grandes abogados del momento, Roland Duran, futuro Ministro de Asuntos Exteriores del gobierno de Francois Mitterand, y debido a un despiste de la jueza instructora del caso, Lucio permaneció tan sólo seis meses en prisión. “Como moneda de cambio yo ayudé posteriormente a Dumas en su etapa política. Tenía contactos de mi vida como activista a los que él no podía acceder y eso me sirvió para ganarme su protección”. Lucio permaneció en la clandestinidad en París durante varios meses con identidad falsa, vigilado constantemente por la policía. Mientras tanto, la red de falsificación seguía funcionando por todo el mundo y la policía no lograba encontrar las placas de impresión –dice la leyenda que algunas las escondía en tumbas de diferentes cementerios de París, entre otros, el de PéreLachaise-. El banco americano empieza a ponerse nervioso: necesitan encarcelar a Lucio y encontrar las

placas de impresión para dejar de perder dinero. Es el juicio final de Lucio y lo tiene crudo. La vista ya ha empezado y el Citibank quiere condenarle a cinco años de prisión, además de exigirle que les devuelva todo el dinero robado y el pago de una indemnización por los daños causados. Lucio se muestra tal como es, defiende que lo ha hecho por sus ideales, no para enriquecerse: “El robo es un acto revolucionario pero si lo haces en tu beneficio deja de serlo”. El albañil, vuelve a intentar una nueva utopía: contactar con Louis Janet, considerado como uno de los grandes magistrados de Francia. Janet, tras investigar el caso, mantiene una relación cordial con Lucio por quien siente curiosidad por su lucha e ideales -años más tarde y siendo amigo personal de Lucio, llegaría a decir que el vasco “representaba todo lo que yo hubiera querido ser”-.

Decide llamar al juez encargado del caso y le convence para que los abogados negocien entre sí. Se llega a un acuerdo por el cual Lucio era obligado a devolver todas las placas de impresión y el stock de cheques de viaje del banco americano, además de comprometerse a cesar sus actividades como falsificador.

A cambio, quedaba en libertad y el Citibank le daba una buena suma de dinero. Al final, el que sale ganando es Lucio. Algo insólito e histórico, todavía hoy difícil de creer.

Pero cuando hablamos de albañil anarquista, hay que estar preparado para creer en lo imposible. “¿Quién me iba a decir que iba a pisar una universidad en mi vida? ¡Ni de albañil! Por eso creo en las utopías”, me responde a una de mis últimas preguntas sobre cómo es que había ido a parar a Oxford para dar una charla. Los años de clandestinidad y actividad latente se acabaron hace tiempo para Lucio, pero su causa no cesa. Actualmente se dedica a contar su historia y a transmitir sus ideales a jóvenes de todo el mundo, los cuales, no dejan de quedarse impresionados con sus palabras y en alguna ocasión hasta han llegado a tatuarse una de sus máximas, “no creo en nada y creo en todo”. Así es Lucio Urtubia. Quien quiera conocerle, no tiene más que ir a visitarle a París. Su puerta está siempre abierta.

I f it’s true that a vase gives shape to a vacuum and music to silence, the work of Albert Ramírez (born Barcelona, 1969) is a symphony without notes. With his sinuous sculptures, the man from Catalonia has been able to mould a delicate and personal sculptural reality with a style of work that is universal and at the same time strangely familiar. His scenes, instants frozen in time, turn the spectators into accomplices, forcing them to build their own vacuum in the parts where the material does not reach. In the slipstream of Zaragoza’s Pablo Gargallo – in the beauty of its execution, the vital importance of its non-forms -, Ramírez advances into unexplored terrain, a vanguard that many have to conform with in seeing from afar. It’s not for nothing that the work of the genius from Zaragoza represented a vital starting point for Albert. “The first time I went to an exhibition by Pablo Gargallo, in La Pedrera in Barcelona, I was in shock. I remember that on leaving, with his book in my hands, I had to sit down on one of the benches on the Paseo de Gracia. I was lost in thought over his theoretical simplicity, his filled spaces and the imaginable ones. It proved to me that it is not necessary for something to be there to be able to visualize it. It set me off on a new, more abstract stage on which I am currently working; it really was a case of a before and an after. He is the artist who has most influenced me in working towards visual simplicity. In this way I managed to make the spectator participate in imagining the gaps.”

The clay, the material that gives life to his sculptures, serves as a safety valve for the demiurge Ramírez for what is often the “unrealizable” of his imagination.

It is this material -“live, ductile and malleable”- that enables him to attain wishes “that I couldn’t with other materials”, but which makes him subject to examination at every moment. “The main difficulties of working with clay are the different phases it goes through, from its wet state to dry. It’s a process of equilibrium to which I have to adapt, respecting the time that the material needs for its consistency. Each one of these phases has a period that you can’t bypass so as to avoid cracks and breakages. You also have to calculate the pillars that support parts of the piece that can only be taken away when it reaches the required consistency.

i es cierto que el jarrón da forma al vacío y la música al silencio, la obra de Albert Ramírez (Barcelona, 1969) es una sinfonía sin notas. Con sus sinuosas esculturas, el catalán ha sabido moldear una delicada realidad escultórica personal, a través de una obra universal y extrañamente familiar. Sus escenas, instantes congelados en el tiempo, convierten al espectador en cómplice, le obligan a construir por sí mismo el vacío donde no llega la materia. En la estela del zaragozano Pablo Gargallo -la pulcritud de la ejecución, la importancia vital de sus no-formas-, Ramírez avanza hasta un terreno inexplorado, una vanguardia que muchos se tienen que conformar con ver de lejos; no en vano, la obra del genio zaragozano supuso en su obra un punto de partida vital. “La primera vez que fui a la exposición de Pablo Gargallo en la Pedrera de Barcelona me quedé en estado de shock. Recuerdo que al salir, con su libro entre las manos, tuve que sentarme en uno de los bancos del Paseo de Gracia. Estuve abstraído en su teórica simplicidad, sus vacíos llenos y vacíos imaginables. Me mostró que no hace falta que algo esté para poder visualizarse. Me transformó hacia una nueva etapa más abstracta en la que estoy trabajando actualmente; realmente fue un antes y un después.

Es el artista que más ha influido en mi obra hacia la simplicidad visual. De esta manera consigo hacer partícipe al espectador en la imaginación de los vacíos”.

La arcilla, el material con el que cobran vida sus esculturas, sirve al demiurgo Ramírez como la válvula de escape para lo a menudo “irrealizable” de su imaginación. Es este material -“vivo, dúctil y maleable”- el que le permite alcanzar límites “que no podría con otros materiales”, pero que le somete a examen en cada momento. “Las principales dificultades de trabajar con arcilla son las diferentes fases por las que ésta pasa, desde su estado húmedo a seco. Es un proceso de equilibrio al que me tengo que adaptar, respetando el tiempo que necesita el material para su consistencia. Cada una de estas fases tiene un periodo que no se puede transgredir para evitar fisuras y roturas.

También hay que calcular pilares que aguanten partes de la pieza que solo podrán quitarse cuando esta adquiera la consistencia requerida. Estos periodos de tiempo me obligan a esperar, por ello el tiempo también es un factor fundamental”. nureiev 35x60x22 cm

A s with other great artists working with a mass, does he establish a dialogue with the material? “Really it’s me who talks to the material when I start to embody the work. I start from a preconceived image and visualize what i want to create from the block. But there is a process of transformation and adaptation of the idea on physically capturing it, and some lines are transformed for my type of sculpture. There are technical problems that prevent me creating a certain thickness, curves or sinuosities that are only possible in the imagination”. After some early steps with painting, the Catalan sculptor preferred to dedicate himself fully to sculpture, where the contact with the mass is not limited to two dimensions. “I believe the relationship with the material is the biggest difference between painting and sculpture. In the process of creating, the fact that you can close your eyes, touch the material, caress it, feel its dampness, vulnerability and its elasticity makes you feel part of the material”.

His iconized and stylized form of production, in line with Brancusi at his best, aims at gathering the ideas of things, their quintessence.

The Romanian emphatically scolded those who branded his work as abstract, saying that the

most realistic was not the appearance but the idea that beats behind the physical form. “He exploited abstraction to the maximum. I agree that the essence and to a degree abstraction are the backbone of the work. On this basis each of us has to configure what he or she can see or wants to imagine. The sculptor shapes the essence and it gives you the option of finalizing the work. Each sculpture represents a value or a quality; love, joy, liberty, bravery, renovation... every one shows fragments of the being. The symbolization of an essence that is intangible and that we don’t usually value”. The movement, -“the most important expression of my work”-, and the total absence of edges, gives his figures a universal aura, one that the artist himself recognizes as being one of his objectives. “With my sculptures I try to represent the simplicity and the essence of values and general events. I’m really amazed that people from different parts of the world usually feel the same sense of identification when looking at my sculptures. They are sensations like the Sueño Marino (Sea Dream) or the sensuality in the feminine essence of Núria, that are shared without taking into account the nationality of the person who is enjoying them.

C omo otros grandes artistas del volumen, ¿establece un diálogo con el material? “Realmente soy yo quien hablo al material cuando empiezo a plasmar la obra, ya que parto de una imagen preconcebida y visualizo en el bloque lo que quiero crear; pero hay un proceso de transformación y adaptación de la idea al plasmarla físicamente, y algunas líneas se transforman por mi tipo de escultura. Hay problemas técnicos que me impiden crear ciertos espesores, curvas o sinuosidades que sólo son posibles en la imaginación”.

Tras unos primeros pasos en la pintura, el escultor catalán prefirió dedicarse de lleno a la escultura, donde el contacto con el volumen no se ve limitado a las dos dimensiones. “La relación con el material es la mayor diferencia entre pintura y escultura. En el proceso de creación el hecho de poder cerrar los ojos, tocar el material, acariciarlo, sentir su humedad, vulnerabilidad y elasticidad te hace sentir parte del material”.

Su delicada y estilizada producción, en la línea del mejor Brancusi, intenta recoger la idea de las cosas, su quintaesencia. El rumano reprendió enfáticamente a los que tachaban su obra de abstracta afirmando que lo más realista no era la apariencia, sino la idea que latía tras la forma física. “Él explotaba hasta el máximo la abstracción. Estoy de

acuerdo en que la esencia y en parte la abstracción es la columna vertebral de la obra, sobre esta base cada uno tendrá que configurar lo que puede ver o quiere imaginar. El escultor plasma la esencia y te da la opción de que tú finalices la obra. Cada escultura representa un valor o cualidad; amor, alegría, libertad, valentía, renovación... cada una muestra fragmentos del ser. La simbolización de una esencia que es intangible y que no solemos valorar”. El movimiento, -“la expresión más importante de mi obra”-, y la ausencia total de aristas, dotan a sus figuras de un aura universal, que el propio artista reconoce entre sus objetivos. “En mis esculturas intento representar la simplicidad y la esencia de valores o actos universales. Realmente me asombra que personas de diferentes partes del mundo suelan tener la misma identificación frente a mi escultura. Son sensaciones como la libertad del Sueño Marino o la sensualidad en la esencia femenina de Núria, que se comparten sin tener en cuenta la nacionalidad de quien las disfruta”.

Joselito, the charming lad who got the Spanish so worked up with his songs in the 50s and 60s, reached the peak of his career when he was barely 13 years old, starring in some of the biggest box office films of the time. However, as his voice became more adult, so it started to mark his decline. The ‘Pequeño Ruiseñor’ (Little Nightingale) gave up on the cinema, and the cinema gave up on Joselito. After many years of falls – including being arrested in Angola – he touched bottom in 1993 when he was arrested for being in possession of half a kilo of cocaine. He spent five years in jail; something that, according to him, has changed his life for the better.

The image of that group of friends riding their bikes while they whistled the catchy theme tune of the TV series Verano Azul (Blue Summer) forms an unchanging part of Spain’s collective imagery. Of those kids, only a few remain in the world of film. Others, like José Luís Fernández, ‘Pancho’, were unable to reinvent themselves. After trying out a musical career that brought him little success, he started to flirt with drugs. As with many youngsters of his generation, he fell prey to the dangerous clutches of heroin.

Since then he has spent years trying to detox himself and fight the bouts of depression that hound him.

Otros, como José Luís Fernández, ‘Pancho’, no se supieron reinventar. Tras intentar una carrera musical sin demasiado éxito, empezó a flirtear con las drogas. Igual que muchos jóvenes de su generación, cayó en las peligrosas garras de la heroína. Desde entonces, lleva años intentando desintoxicarse y luchando contra las depresiones que lo acosan.

Sonia Martínez started very young in television. Her passage through the programmes 3,2,1… contacto and Dabadabada turned her into one of the best-known faces on the small screen.

After trying out her luck in the U.S., some stolen photos in which she appeared topless changed the course of her career and her life. She was sacked from her work and little by little became separated from the audiovisual world and embraced that of heroin. After various failed attempts to kick the habit, in 1990 she contracted AIDS. In spite of Sonia’s strength, the illness ended her life in 1994.

The Yanomami live in the jungle in the south of Venezuela. They are a tribe without frontiers who inhabit huge areas of jungle where civilization doesn’t reach. They eat the ashes of their dead to give them vital energy, and they see themselves as children of the Moon.

That’s the case of Evo Morales in Bolivia and, as far back as the 19th century, of Benito Juárez in Mexico.

although many of them are in danger of extinction due to the aggressive pressure of US and European culture. For some of them, like the Maya, their roots are buried in 5,000 years of antiquity. The most important are the Quechua, the Guaraní, the Aimara, the Náhuatl and the Mapundungun.

Brazil: the simplest language Alongside Quechua, with five million speakers and the most widely spread of the indigenous languages of the Americas, is Piranhã, which is spoken by barely 100 members of the tribe of the same name and is the simplest language in the world.

The Piranhã, who live on a tributary of the Amazon in the Brazilian jungle, disregard numbers in their vocabulary, doubtless because they have no need of them. Colours don’t exist either. Nor oral tenses. Nor writing: Piranhã is passed on orally from generation to generation. This people have not elaborated myths about the creation of the universe.

Perhaps the question about where we came from doesn’t torment them.

They don’t even keep written or collective memories of their past. Their existence is confined to the present.

With just eight consonants, the Piranhã also talk with whistles, chanting and humming. Those who have listened to them say their sound is the sound of nature.

Their community is one of the many anthropological treasures that is hidden (and protected by) Amazonia. The Funai (The National Indian Foundation) estimates there are up to 77 tribes in the virgin jungle that have never had any interaction with our civilization.

In Guatemala around 60% of the population is indigenous. In Peru it’s 40%. In El Salvador 10%. In Honduras 4%. In Colombia 3%. In Nicaragua, Venezuela and Argentina 2%. In total, some 8% of the population of Latin America.

Language is the biggest sign of identity for these groups. Below the language monopoly of Spanish, English and Portuguese, there are a thousand living indigenous tongues,

The young filmmaker Luna Marán was born in an indigenous community in the Sierra Norte

mountains of Oaxaca. She belongs to a generation that is not only proud of its roots but has also found in the media a tool for disseminating its culture and values.

Evidence of that is her documentary Me parezco tanto a ti, (I’m so much like you) in which, with freshness and naturalness, the old women and the girls from her community speak intimately about their desires and their hopes.

“It’s not about claiming rights with anything connected with indigenous peoples”, explains Luna, “although it’s true that we [the indigenous people] are accustomed to being looked at from outside to inside and not from inside to outside”.

Her informative work is centred on what we all have in common: “All the original cultures of the world have a harmonious relationship with the earth. It’s capitalism that confuses us. It convinces us that accumulating money is what makes us happy. What is important in my community is sharing, and not having more than another.”

Is this way of life at risk? “Yes, there is danger”, replies Luna. “The capitalist culture is subjugating. It tricks you. But I belong to a generation and a society that is conscious of its identity”.

Writer Juan Miguel Aguilera reconstructed in his novel Rihla (Minotauro, 2003) the Aztec world through the eyes of an Arab expedition that reached the continent before the Spanish. “The Aztec and Mayan cultures today are highly respected in Mexico,” he explains. “They are present in all aspects of life: food, clothes, languages, traditions. They are held in great prestige”. However, “while their culture is extolled, the indigenous people are relegated to the bottom rung on the social ladder”.

Luna Marán doesn’t believe in a direct link between indigenous peoples and poverty: “There are indigenous people who are very poor. But, also, there are many people who are poor who are not indigenous”. Also, “many communities don’t have money, but they do have other riches: well-being, peace. They live in beautiful spots without contamination and where there is no violence. The world can learn a lot from them”.

A veces se han organizado iniciativas benéficas en las que se pide a los venezolanos de las ciudades que donen ropa a los yanomami. Pero éstos, que usan taparrabos, al ver los pantalones, los miran con extrañeza y se preguntan para qué los necesitan. Se conforman con que les dejen en paz.

Hay muchos modos de conquistar un pueblo. Uno de ellos puede ser perfectamente unos pantalones. Otro la violencia.

Los españoles llegaron a América en 1492. “Fue el choque entre un mundo neolítico y otro renacentista”, explica el escritor Alfonso Mateo-Sagasta, quien en Caminarás con el sol (Grijalbo, 2011), reconstruye la historia de Gonzalo Guerrero, un aventurero español que en plena conquista se pasó al lado de los mayas.

En el continente viven entre 50 y 60 millones de indígenas, un grupo de población muy difícil de acotar, dado el alto grado de mestizaje.

Prueba de ello es su documental Me parezco tanto a ti, en el que, con frescura y naturalidad, ancianas y muchachas de su comunidad hablan en tono íntimo sobre sus deseos y esperanzas.

“No se trata de reivindicar nada relacionado con el indigenismo”, explica Luna, “aunque es cierto que [los indígenas] estamos acostum-

El mundo tiene mucho que aprender de ellos”.

What unites us Lo que nos une

I

n Israel one misses Spanish style bars. The small glass of beer at mid-day and the tapa before eating. The red wine for light sipping and the fruity white. The mussels, patatas bravas (pieces of roast potato in spicy tomato sauce) or a baguette sandwich of squid.

A piece of bacon or a good slice of Spanish omelette; the baby lamb from a wood stove à la Manix in Campaspero (Valladolid) or the roast suckling pig with the touch of the Segovian roaster, José María.

But, far from this, the shared bath tub we call the Mediterranean determines the peculiarities of the people who bathe in its waters.

Although we are different culturally and socially, the sea provides us with a series of qualities and characteristics that for good or bad make us similar if not the same. To speak only of Israel and its similarities with things Spanish is not fair, given that Spain wouldn’t be what it is without Judeo-Christian and Moslem influences. Well away from historical and religious questions, each of us looks at each other in detail and we cannot avoid being surprised. We are very passionate and given to making a racket; impatient and pressured, and Jacks of all trades yet masters of none. Except for the siesta, that Palestinians and Jews make little of, we enjoy rest and nature; although in the case of the latter all, and I say all, attack it when we can.

Is it because of all this why, many other things aside, it is football that really draws together the three societies that live in this region, one of the most convulsive in the world. Real Madrid or Barcelona?

This is the recurring question that one gets asked at any moment and in any part of Israel, Gaza or the West Bank. Such is the passion of Palestinians and Israelis for the Spanish football league that there are moments when you forget where you are. Cars with white or claret and blue pennants drive through the streets of the main cities while the urban buses (yes, you read it right, urban buses) carry the shields and colours of the driver’s favourite team stuck to their windscreens.

By societies, (without any scientific base for saying this) I would dare to suggest that it’s the Palestinians who go more for supporting Barcelona while a large part of the Israelis are closer to the whites (of Madrid) It’s true that the latest, brilliant campaigns of the Catalans have caused damage among the followers of Madrid, especially among the very young. In this territory in permanent conflict it’s not unusual to see young Palestinians face up to the Israeli anti-riot squads with stone throwing, decked out in the shirts of Barcelona and showing off the names of Messi, Xavi or Piqué on their backs.

A good thing, therefore, in these lands, to talk of football and take a rest from the permanent conflict of the Middle East, of all against all, over and over again. If only this could become a permanent little league in which the teams are not so different as they might appear. It’s the Mediterranean, no doubt about it, although we’ll talk about the conflict another day.

n Israel se echan de menos los bares la española. La cañita del medio día y la tapa de antes de comer. El tinto de trago ligero y el blanco afrutado. Los mejillones, una patata brava o un bocadillo de calamares. Un torrezno o un buen pincho de tortilla; el lechazo al horno de leña al estilo del Manix en Campaspero (Valladolid) o el cochinillo con el toque del asador segoviano, José María. Pero lejos de esto, la bañera común que se llama Mediterráneo determina las particularidades de la población que se baña en sus aguas.

Aunque cultural y socialmente seamos distintos, ese mar nos dota de una serie de cualidades y particularidades que para bien o para mal nos hace similares que no iguales. Hablar solo de Israel y sus semejanzas con lo español no es justo, puesto que España no sería lo que es sin las influencias judeocristianas y musulmanas. Lejos de cuestiones históricas o religiosas, los unos y los otros nos miramos detalladamente y no podemos evitar sorprendernos. Somos todos pasionales y broncas; impacientes y apresurados y aprendices de todo y oficiales de nada. Excepto la siesta, que palestinos y judíos frecuentan poco, disfrutamos del descanso y la naturaleza; aunque a esta última, todos y digo todos, la atacamos cuanto podemos.

Será por todo esto por lo que, al margen de muchas cosas, es el fútbol lo que realmente acerca a las tres sociedades que habitan esta región, una de las más convulsas del mundo. ¿Real Madrid o Barcelona? Esta es la recurrente pregunta que te harán en cualquier momento y cualquier lugar de Israel, Gaza o Cisjordania. Tal es la pasión de palestinos e israelíes por la Liga de Fútbol española que hay momentos en que olvidas donde te encuentras. Coches con banderolas blancas o azulgranas recorren en estos momentos las calles de las principales ciudades del país mientras los autobuses urbanos (si, has leído bien, autobuses urbanos) llevan pegados a sus parabrisas los escudos y colores del equipo favorito del conductor. Por sociedades, (sin base científica alguna) me atrevería a decir que, son los palestinos los que más se decantan por lo culé, mientras que una parte importante de israelíes están más cerca de los blancos. Es cierto, también que las últimas y brillantes campañas de los catalanes han hecho estragos entre los seguidores madridistas, sobre todo en el grupo de los más jóvenes. En este territorio en permanente conflicto no es raro ver a jóvenes palestinos enfrentarse a los antidisturbios israelíes a pedradas, ataviados con camisetas del Barcelona y en cuya espalda lucen los nombres de Messi, Xavi o Piqué.

Buen asunto, por tanto en estas tierras, el hablar de fútbol y relajar este permanente conflicto de Oriente Medio de todos contra todos y a tres vueltas, como si esto pudiera llegar a ser una permanente liguilla en la que los equipos no son tan diferentes como pudiera parecer. Es el Mediterráneo, no lo dudes, aunque del conflicto ya hablaremos otro día.

bone Diplomat: a Prince spoon, an oval shaped pipe, and a flattened, long and slightly curving metal tube. At the time I didn’t know you could say so many things about a pipe. I bought it in Honolulu, an obligatory stop after a long and eventful crossing in a frigate. “It’s a one off opportunity. I rescued it from a shipwreck years ago in the Southern Seas,” a native salesman told me. I didn’t smoke, which is extraordinary for a sailor and unusual in a writer.

But I brought it to my lips and I liked what I saw in the mirror. It gave me the air of a meticulous and honourable author. The native insisted that it looked as if it had been made for me. The thing is, I ended up buying it purely for show. I put it on the mantelpiece in the living room of my house in Pittsfield, between a miniature of a galleon and a rusty anchor that I kept from my time as a cabin boy in Liverpool. The pipe was there for various months, gathering dust, until Nathaniel Hawthorne came to visit me. He crossed the living room and went straight to it. He lifted it slowly in one hand, removed the dust from it in one blow, and gave it a careful rub with one of his shirt cuffs. “It’s a collector’s item,” he said, with that deep voice of his that resounds like a steamboat plying the Mississippi. “But you must light it now and again or it’ll end up spoilt. And that would be a shame, a real shame,” he added.

Nathan is a heavy smoker. It’s difficult to imagine him without a pipe. When one’s not stuck between his lips, puffing out clouds, his features start twitching. He left me a little of his tobacco and that same night I followed his advice, sat on the rocking chair in the porch. I took a deep drag and exhaled softly: the bubbles of smoke, the silence, it was like being alone on the deck of a ship as the mist came down. When I looked towards the horizon the pipe had taken on the silhouette of a whale.

Nathan es un fumador empedernido. Cuesta imaginarlo sin su pipa. Cuando no la lleva pegada a los labios, humeando neblinas, sus facciones se crispan. Me dejó un poco de su picadura y esa misma noche seguí su consejo sentado en la mecedora del porche. Di una calada profunda y exhalé con suavidad: los borbotones de humo, el silencio, era como permanecer en soledad en la cubierta de un barco mientras cae la bruma. Cuando miré al horizonte la pipa había adoptado la silueta de una ballena.

Spanish as a second language for the inmigrant population

T

he increase in the immigrant population in Spain over the last two decades has produced a growing demand in the teaching and learning of Spanish as a second language.

For some time now, social organizations, NGOs and educational institutions have been promoting this educational sector, at the same time as organizing studies to classify and analysing which are the most effective teaching and learning methods. In view of this, the Fundación Comillas foundation, as part of its goal to disseminate and teach the Spanish language, has organized the first meeting dedicated to research into the teaching and learning of

Castilian Spanish as a second language to the immigrant population. It will be held on 24 and 25 June. The meeting is aimed at analyzing the current situation in the sector, sharing info from the diverse research projects already existing, and promoting new measures for providing impulse to this educational area. Also, those who go to the foundation this summer will be able to attend the conferences that are organized as ‘Fridays in Comillas’. They will be given by two of the grandes dames of Spanish literature: Ana María Matute and Maruja Torres.

at now in the taxi on the way back home, following a long photo session, the driver recognizes him straight away. “Excuse me. Are you Óscar Jaenada? The one from the pirates series? Could you sign me an autograph?” The actor happily signs his autógraph, while we continue talking with the taxi driver. He doesn’t stop congratulating Oscar for the “great role” he played in the film about the life of the flamenco singer and songwriter, Camarón de la Isla. Jaenada is one of the best known and respected actors in Spanish cinema and right now is living a new wave of popularity thanks to his return to television with the series Piratas (Tele 5), in which he shares the lead role with the stunning Pilar Rubio (see BM#11), and for playing a sailor in the Spanish navy in the latest film of the successful Walt Disney saga, Pirates of the Caribbean. “For me it has been a case of representing two totally different characters, although the productions have similar titles and they were premiered at more or less the same time,” he says. Coincidences in the world of film marketing and chances of life aside, the fact is Óscar has just arrived from Los Ángeles after attending the premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean, on stranger tides, a film in which he has worked with two of the greats, Johnny Depp and Penélope Cruz. “Johnny is a very hard working guy, who listens a lot and insists he keeps learning. Penélope is always going to be a benchmark when it comes to thinking about the vision of an actress. She belongs to a generation of great actors among whom, of course, is Javier Bardem”. Jaenada has a special admiration for Bardem, who he meets up with now and again in Los Angeles, the city where the Catalan actor has made his second home. “What has happened to Javier has been something amazing. In just a few years he has become the new Marlon Brando, and I am not the only one who is saying that. The Americans are saying that, and all the film world. He has opened a breech in Hollywood and that is what we are trying to exploit, those of us who have ventured to seek work there.” His experience in the Mecca of cinema has been positive. In little more than two years he has had a leading role in The Losers, a story of revenge based on a famous American comic, has just finished filming under the orders of one of the greats, Rob Marshall, and has received several interesting proposals. “Hollywood is very demanding. They offer you many things and you have to know how to select very well. It’s very appetizing, but you have to keep to criteria, to be faithful to yourself”. Since he started in the world of cinema Jaenada knows how difficult it is to get to Hollywood, and before that to be considered a good actor and be able to choose the perfect script. “I started in acting by setting up my own theatre company, L´Endoll. I wrote scripts, directed and sought out how to produce the pieces... grew accustomed to not having bosses and I don’t want to have them. That is why when they offer me something I tell them what I like and what I don’t.” At 36 years old, Óscar Jaenada has already tried out many things, from comedy to melodrama and action films. But he will always be remembered for two great leading roles. “Noviembre, by Archero Mañas, is perhaps the film for which I am best known. For me it was a great opportunity and a great script. But Camarón, la película by Jaime Chávarri, signified a point of inflexion in my career, having to turn myself into so difficult a character. At first I turned down the offer, but my brother convinced me. This type of challenge is one of those that test me and the system that I have.” It was with Camarón, la película that he won a Goya award, for the best male actor in 2005. He had to become the gypsy singer and songwriter from head to toes; thin, long hair and the way he smoked included. He had hardly heard him, and he didn’t know how to sing. At first he was frightened at not being up to the part and, even, of being threatened by the gypsies who held Camarón de la Isla in such high esteem. But he took it on board, met the challenge, and was applauded by national and international critics. Since then Óscar has already made a small footprint in the world of Spanish cinema.

Now he’s got Hollywood to conquer and the great role of his life to discover.

ontados ya en el taxi de vuelta a casa, después de una larga sesión de fotos, el conductor le reconoce perfectamente. “Perdone, ¿es usted Óscar Jaenada? ¿El de la serie Piratas? ¿Me puede firmar un autógrafo?”. El actor catalán le firma encantado el autógrafo. Jaenada es uno de los actores más reconocidos y respetados del cine español y ahora vive una nueva ola de popularidad gracias a su vuelta a la televisión con la serie Piratas (Tele 5), de la que es protagonista junto con la despampanante Pilar Rubio (ver BM#11), y por su papel de marinero de la armada española en el último filme de la exitosa saga de Walt Disney, Piratas del Caribe. “Para mí ha sido representar dos personajes totalmente distintos, aunque las producciones tengan títulos parecidos y se estrenen más o menos al mismo tiempo”, señala Jaenada.

A sus treinta y seis años Óscar Jaenada ha tocado ya muchos palos, desde comedia, melodrama hasta pelis de acción, pero siempre va a ser reconocido por dos grandes papeles protagonistas. “Noviembre, de Archero Mañas, es quizá la película por la que más se me conoce. Para mí fue toda una oportunidad y era un gran guión. Pero Camarón, la película de Jaime Chávarri, supuso un punto de inflexión en mi carrera el tener que transformarme en un personaje así de difícil. Al principio rechacé la oferta, pero mi hermano me convenció. Este tipo de retos son los que me ponen a prueba y al sistema que exhibo”. Fue por Camarón, la película cuando consiguió el Goya a la mejor interpretación masculina en 2005.
