Editor´s letter Evolving to the rhythm

[COMING UP, ONE FOR CLICHÉS.] Here we go again… In Babylon, a magazine about Spanish culture, we have learned to live with them as part of the game. Our culture, which in the popular imagination feeds on sun, paella, bulls and sangría, always has a travelling companion, flamenco. Yes, we love flamenco, but we don’t dress in such folkloric style to go to work, just as we don’t shout olé when a waiter puts down our coffee.

Spanish culture has not always felt comfortable associating itself with this age-old art. Abused for its origins, which the majority of experts date at around the eighteenth century, flamenco soon turned into a declaration of principles, a sign of identity that has kept going up to the present day. Battered and then elevated, in keeping with the styles of the times, flamenco has managed to survive laws, trends and critics over the centuries, and it doesn’t look as if things are going to change.

On the contrary, it is growing more very day. And this despite the fact, as with all the supreme arts, flamenco has always filled a sacred spot in which insurrection against dogma is usually castigated with being condemned to ostracism. “If I record this, my family will kill me”, said an adolescent Tomatito when he faced up to La Leyenda del Tiempo in 1979. “Calm down. When I tape it you’ll see how different it sounds,” Camarón replied to him. The disc had very modest sales, was undervalued by flamenco freaks and even ridiculed by many purists. Today, what is considered by many to be the “Sgt. Pepper of flamenco” is one of the most important albums in the history of the genre (see p. 49).

As if they were talking about an elixir of life, the poorly named guardians of flamenco have pledged to maintain the art intact, defending the idea that any other approach, without giving flamenco its due respect, could disfigure it. What happens is just the opposite. That it has survived, evolved, and keeps on growing is thanks to the disrespectful approaches that have been taken with it since its birth. “Just imagine Bob Dylan in a room with a bottle of Tío Pepe, Diego del Gastor on guitar and Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera providing the beat; what would happen?” asked the legendary group Smash in the full emergence of flamenco fusion. You’ll find the answer in these pages.

¡Marchando una de tópicos! Ya estamos otra vez… En Babylon, una revista sobre cultura española, hemos aprendido a convivir con ellos como parte del juego. Nuestra cultura, que en el imaginario popular se alimenta del sol, la paella, los toros y la sangría, tiene siempre otro compañero de viaje, el flamenco. Sí, nos encanta el flamenco, pero no vamos vestidos de folclóricos para ir a trabajar; ni gritamos olé cuando un camarero nos pone un café.

La cultura española no siempre se ha sentido cómoda asociándose a este arte centenario. Denostado en sus orígenes, que la mayoría de expertos datan en el siglo XVIII, el flamenco pronto se convirtió en una declaración de principios, una seña de identidad que aún perdura hasta nuestros días. Vapuleado o encumbrado según las modas del momento, el flamenco ha sabido sobrevivir a leyes, tendencias y críticos durante siglos, y no parece que la cosa vaya a cambiar.

Al contrario, crece cada día más. Y todo pese a que, como todas las artes supremas, el flamenco siempre ha sido un espacio sagrado en el que la insurrección al dogma usualmente se castiga con la condena al ostracismo. “Si grabo esto, mi familia me mata”, dijo un adolescente Tomatito cuando se enfrentó a la aventura de La Leyenda del Tiempo en 1979. “Tranquilo, cuando lo grabe yo verás cómo suena diferente”, le respondió Camarón. El disco tuvo unas ventas más que modestas, fue infravalorado por los flamencólogos y hasta ridiculizado por muchos puristas. Hoy, el considerado por muchos como “el Sgt. Peppers del flamenco”, es uno de los álbumes más importantes de la historia del género (ver p. 49).

Como si del elixir de la vida se tratase, los mal llamados guardianes del flamenco se han empeñado en mantener intacto este arte, defendiendo la idea de que cualquier acercamiento, sin el debido respeto, podría desfigurarlo. Lo que ocurre es justo lo contrario: si ha sobrevivido, evolucionado y sigue en constante crecimiento, ha sido gracias a las irrespetuosas aproximaciones que se han producido desde su nacimiento. “Imaginemos a Bob Dylan en un cuarto, con una botella de Tío Pepe, Diego del Gastor a la guitarra y la Fernanda y la Bernarda de Utrera haciendo compás, ¿qué pasaría?”, se preguntaba el legendario grupo Smash en plena eclosión del flamenco fusión. The land of the rising sun currently has some very strong links with Spain, and in this sense flamenco in particular and Spanish culture

in general have found a second home in the last few years in the islands. Without doubt, the Japanese have managed to comprehend more than any other people of the world the essence of the flamenco art and the intimate feeling of the phrase composed by Kiko Veneno and made famous by Camarón: “Enamoured with life, although at times it hurts”.

La mayoría del tiempo transcurrido desde nuestra publicitaria portada anterior hasta la que acabas de ver, hemos seguido con sufrimiento, compromiso y alarma los hechos ocurridos en Japón. El país del sol naciente mantiene actualmente vínculos muy estrechos con España, y en ese

sentido el flamenco en particular y la cultura española en general ha encontrado en los últimos años en la isla una segunda casa. Sin duda, los japoneses han sabido comprender mejor que ningún otro pueblo del mundo la esencia del arte jondo y el sentido íntimo de la frase que compuso Kiko Veneno e hizo famosa Camarón: “Enamorao de la vida, aunque a veces duela”.

Keep in touch I would like to congratulate you on your stupendous magazine. I’ve been reading for a bit over a year, when a professor of audiovisual communications praised Babylon as an example of a good independent initiative and another professor recommended us to take

Spring music seasons Spring has activated the musical hormones in Babylon, and we have already prepared ourselves for an on the move time in which (of course) we also want you to take a part. The first stop on the tour will be long, Festimad 2M in Madrid, a great party symbolizing musical independence and biodiversity that Babylon Magazine will be supporting this year as official media partner. From 28 April to 8 May, the festival will present nearly a hundred musical performances at some 30 settings around the whole region. The second stop will be shorter, but intense. On Saturday, 4 June, we will be flying to London to watch live at the O2 Academy, Islington one of the groups of our Flamencovolution, the report that occupies the front page of this edition. Los Delinqüentes and Tomasito will arrive for the first time together in the British capital, and new subscribers to Babylon will be able to take part in a draw for 10 tickets to enjoy the concert by the band from Jerez de la Frontera.

New inland cities The economic bonanza helped promote some great architecture in Spain. Prestige firms for projects capable of projecting the updated image of a medium size provincial capital to the world . The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is a prime example of how a cultural building, erected as a flagship for the city, can change an urban landscape and achieve the desired projection abroad. In Santiago de Compostela, unquestionably a capital of culture, tourism, religion and university, a UNESCO World Heritage city, they have just opened to the public part of the Ciudad de la Cultura (in the photo), designed

by U.S architect Peter Eisenman.

A gigantic complex of 148,000 square metres that brings together a library, archives, museum, opera and art centre in one single space.

After 10 years of construction, so far they have opened only two of the six buildings in a complex whose cost will reach 351 million euros. While it is still waiting to be finished, its transforming effect on Santiago has already started to be felt a little.

YES, THE CRISIS HAS GIVEN a shaking to scientific circles, provoking cuts and amplifying the phenomenon of the brain drain. Nevertheless, Spanish laboratories are showing themselves to be in good form, especially in medicine, and with a very recent highpoint: the discovery of a vaccine to placate the growth of tuberculosis, carried out by a team from the Hospital Germans Trias i Pujol in Badalona.

Along with the US, Canada and the United Kingdom, Spain leads the advances in regenerative medicine and the use of mother cells, but it is the fight against cancer that has received the best news in recent months. Various teams from the Catalan institute Idibell have discovered enoxacina, a substance that could put a brake on the growth of tumors; as well as the bacteria that would enable the early identification of cancer of the stomach.

In the same way, in Seville, a group at the Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío has identified the genetic markers for cancer of the larynx. The latest cross-frontier partnerships have also proved important. US and Spanish scientists have managed to contain cellular ageing; and a team from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and the Universidad de Sevilla have found a pharmacological way to hold back the degenerative processes of illnesses like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Spain has also placed itself rapidly in the forefront of the bioartificial race. The Hospital Gregorio Marañón in Madrid has the first laboratory in the world dedicated to the creation of this type of organ, and Granada is a firm candidate to host a similar centre in a sector that by 2020 could reach a sales volume of 20 billion dollars.

España lidera junto a EEUU, Canadá y Reino Unido los avances en medicina regenerativa y uso de células madre, pero es la lucha contra el cáncer la que ha recibido las mejores noticias en los últimos meses. Varios equipos del instituto catalán Idibell han descubierto la enoxacina, una sustancia que podría frenar el crecimiento de los tumores; y también la bacteria que permitiría identificar prematuramente el cáncer de estómago. Las últimas colaboraciones transnacionales también han sido relevantes. Científicos norteamericanos y españoles ha logrado contener el envejecimiento celular; y un equipo del Instituto Karolinska de Estocolmo y la Universidad de Sevilla ha hallado una vía farmacológica para frenar los procesos degenerativos de enfermedades como del Parkinson y el Alzheimer.

España también se ha colocado pronto en la vanguardia de la carrera bioartificial. El Hospital Gregorio Marañón de Madrid cuenta con el primer laboratorio del mundo dedicado a la creación de órganos de este tipo, y Granada es firme candidata a acoger un centro similar, en un sector que en 2020 podría alcanzar un volumen de negocio de 20 billones de dólares.

International mobility is the norm in the world of science. We live in very inter-connected countries, and the scientist tends to develop his or her work in the best conditions possible. They have the desire to develop their work well and, at the same time, have a logical stability.

Both are possible reasons for the international exodus of many Spanish scientists. Even so, I believe you have to pay back in imagination and creativity the society that has paid for our training and that culturally and socially we form a part of. In Spain, the difficulty lies at times in the organization more than in the actual methods. Creativity demands freedom, and the system is very rule-bound and bureaucratic, different to what happens in other countries. At the moment, on the other hand, researchers are well looked upon socially. If I had to sum up I would say that research in Spain needs more administrative freedom and social sponsorship.

And, of course, sufficient funding.

La movilidad internacional es normal en el mundo de la ciencia. Vivimos en países muy interconectados, y el científico tiende a desarrollar su trabajo en las mejores condiciones posibles, con el deseo de desarrollar bien su labor y tener, a la vez, una lógica estabilidad. Ambas causas son la razón del posible éxodo internacional de muchos científicos españoles. Aun así, creo que hay que devolver imaginación y creatividad a la sociedad que ha pagado nuestra formación y de la que cultural y socialmente formamos parte. En España, la dificultad radica a veces en la organización más que en los propios medios. La creatividad exige libertad y el sistema es muy reglamentista y burocrático, a diferencia de lo que ocurre en otros países. En este momento, por otra parte, los investigadores están bien considerados socialmente. Si tuviera que resumir diría que la investigación española necesita más libertad administrativa y mecenazgo social. Y por supuesto, fondos suficientes.

The woman who makes Opera come alive by Ángela Gala Soprano, teacher, compositor and orchestra director. “I love everything I do”, says Pilar Jurado. She started studying music at the Real Conservatorio Superior in Madrid when she was only eight years old. Since her debut as a soloist, at a little over 20, Pilar has toured the stages of the opera houses of Europe, Asia and the Americas. “The opera genre is something that is seen with rather strange eyes in the 21st century”, says Pilar. Nevertheless, her La página en blanco (The Blank Page) has led her to become the first woman compositor to premiere a contemporary opera at the Teatro Real opera house in Madrid. It’s a surprising milestone at this point in the 21st century. Yet she doesn’t give it any importance and chooses to be happy with the fact that the work is already one of the best-received operas by the public in Spain. “I have still not taken on all that’s happe-ning. The opera is now starting to gain momentum after its debut, and they are asking me to do a suite that can be performed for many more Spanish auditoriums.”

The critiques in the domestic and international press have appeared.

The Spanish media have classified this contemporary opera as a cybernetic thriller. Pilar Jurado recognizes she was the first to talk about her opera as a thriller, in reference to the film style rhythm that she has tried to give it. “I think it is also the rhythm that most of the people identify with”. The public bring fond memories to her mind. The biggest gratification that she received in the United States came from a woman who told her just how long it had been since she enjoyed an evening of music so much: “1961, San Diego, Callas”. Will Pilar be the new grand diva of lyrical music?

La ópera ya está empezando a cobrar vida posterior al estreno, y me están pidiendo que haga una suite para que se pueda representar por muchos más auditorios españoles”. Las críticas en la prensa nacional e internacional se han sucedido. Los medios españoles han calificado esta ópera contemporánea como thriller cibernético. Pilar Jurado reconoce haber sido la primera en hablar de su ópera como un thriller, haciendo referencia al ritmo cinematográfico que ha intentado darle. “Creo que también es el ritmo con el que se identifica la mayor parte de la población”. My modest contribution to Asturian nouveau cuisine consists in that I have always defined the products. There was a time when the majority of chefs were only worried about the techniques.

What has been most important has been going back to putting a value on the importance of local products from the region, in my case sweet corn, some very basic types of fish, and pitu (the name for free range chicken in Asturias).

When I go to a restaurant I like to try the different styles of food. At Casa Marcial we put the same enthusiasm into a traditional dish as we do with an avant garde one.

At Ibérica London we produce Spanish cooking in the form of tapas, and my mark there is no other than being the transporter of Spanish gastronomy to London.

The Michelin stars fill us with strength and pride, help us to improve. We like to do things slowly, trying to improve every day.

Mi modesta aportación a la nueva cocina asturiana consiste en que siempre he definido los productos. Hubo una época en que la mayoría de los cocineros sólo estaban pendientes de las técnicas.

Lo más importante ha sido volver a poner en valor la importancia de los productos locales de la tierra, en mi caso el maíz, algunos pescados muy humildes o el ‘pitu’.

WORDS BY JUAN CALLEJA After the success of previous editions, Burgos is preparing for a new European noche blanca (white night).

This year the main objective will be to make use of all the public spaces in the city, to devise from them one great cultural scenario. For this, the organizers of La Noche Blanca de Burgos have opted to work with the French artist Roland Breand, a specialist in major events and spectacles such as the ceremonies for the opening and closure of Stavanger 2008 as European Capital of Culture.

Breand’s team see the River Arlanzón as the hub around which the 100 plus programmed cultural events will take place during the evening and night of Saturday, 28 May – the eve of the pilgrimage to honour the White Virgin. Their proposal consists of four main themes: water, and dreams as a poetic imagery that associates water with the cycle of human life; light as a restructuring element of the urban landscape, the loquacious city that promotes poetry and literature in public spaces, and a sound landscape as a journey through creative contemporary sounds, both classical and mixes. Iconic areas such as the Teatro Principal theatre, the CAB centre of contemporary art, the Plaza Mayor square and the Paseo del Espolón street will host, free and for the public in general, concerts, dancing displays, exhibitions and guided tours around the most emblematic historic places in the land of El Cid Campeador.

A wealth of activities for a city that is aiming with this initiative to demonstrate to the world why it could be the next European Capital of Culture in 2016.

Después del éxito cosechado en pasadas ediciones, Burgos se prepara para una nueva noche blanca europea, que este año tiene como objetivo principal hacer uso de todos los espacios públicos de la ciudad para concebirlos como un gran escenario cultural. Para ello, las entidades organizadoras de La Noche Blanca de Burgos han optado por colaborar con el artista francés Roland Breand, especialista en grandes eventos y espectáculos como la ceremonia de inauguración y clausura de Stavanger 2008 Capital Europea de la Cultura.

El equipo de Breand concibe el río Arlanzón como el eje a partir del cual se desarrollarán las más de cien propuestas culturales programadas durante la tarde y noche del próximo sábado 28 de mayo -víspera de la Romería de la Virgen Blanca.

La propuesta aborda cuatro temáticas principales; el agua y los sueños como imaginario poético que asocia el agua al ciclo de la vida humana, la luz como elemento reestructurador del paisaje urbano, la ciudad locuaz que promueve la poesía y la literatura en los espacios públicos, y el paisaje sonoro como un viaje por sonidos creativos contemporáneas, clásicos y de fusión. Espacios tan emblemáticos como el Teatro Principal, el centro de arte contemporáneo CAB, la Plaza Mayor o el Paseo del Espolón acogerán, de forma gratuita y para el público en general, conciertos, espectáculos de danza, exposiciones o rutas guiadas por los puntos históricos más emblemáticos de la tierra del Cid Campeador.

Todo un lujo para una ciudad que pretende con esta iniciativa demostrar al mundo por qué puede ser la próxima capital cultural europea en 2016.

Burgos has gone through a great transformation. Works such as the Museo de la Evolución Humana have put the Castilla y Leon region city on the world’s cultural and informative map and many of the cultural festivals we have are international ones. This last point is important to highlight the new cultural life of the city. When I left to go to Madrid, we had the sad honour of being one of the cities with the least cultural activities in Spain. Right now we can say proudly that Burgos has entered the avant garde cultural circuits and, what’s more, has managed to preserve and transmit our more traditional heritage. A good example of this is La Noche Blanca (The White Night), one of the jewels that we can count on. For me, this evolution that the city has been through, thanks to the honesty of our tradition and the balance with avant garde, is key to becoming the European cultural capital in 2016.

Burgos ha vivido una gran transformación. Obras como la del Museo de la Evolución Humana han puesto a la ciudad castellanoleonesa en el mapa cultural y divulgativo mundial y muchos de los festivales culturales que tenemos son de carácter internacional. Es importante este último punto para resaltar la nueva vida cultural de la ciudad.

Cuando yo me marché a Madrid, teníamos el triste honor de ser una de las ciudades con menos actividad cultural de España. Ahora mismo podemos decir orgullosos que Burgos ha entrado en los circuitos de la vanguardia cultural y además ha sabido preservar y difundir nuestro legado más tradicional. Un claro ejemplo es La Noche Blanca de Burgos, una de las joyas con las que contamos.

Para mí, esta evolución que ha experimentado la ciudad gracias a la honestidad de nuestra tradición y el equilibrio con la vanguardia es clave para ser capitalidad cultural europea en 2016.

Francis Bacon TWO NEGATIVE ELEMENTS, combined, can achieve a positive result. That is the basis of the Paradox of Parrondo. Its creator, Professor Juan Manuel Rodríguez Parrondo, reached this conclusion after inventing two games of chance that, as it turned out, have led to advances in fields as disparate as biology, engineering, economy and the study of democracy. That mathematical discovery has just notched up 10 years, and the University of Greenwich wanted to pay homage to the Madrid physicist by analyzing all the repercussions of his findings. The Paradox of Parrondo was baptized as such by Australian engineer Derek Abbot, who was fascinated by a talk given by the mathematician and published an article about him in the magazine Nature. From that moment on, modifying his language, Professor Parrondo and his paradox started to interest researchers from different disciplines, such as Javier Buceta, at the University of San Diego, with whom the Spaniard has studied the creation of life and its dynamics; and Daniel Peralta, from the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia Español, from which another variant of the paradox has emerged through the Theory of Chaos. The professor has gone through with Babylon Magazine the embodiments of his formula in these last 10 years.

DOS ELEMENTOS NEGATIVOS, combinados, pueden lograr un resultado positivo. Ésa es la base de la Paradoja de Parrondo. Su creador, el profesor Juan Manuel Rodríguez Parrondo, llegó a esta conclusión después de inventar dos juegos de azar que, a la postre, han permitido avances en campos tan dispares como biología, ingeniería, economía o el estudio de la democracia. Semejante descubrimiento matemático acaba de cumplir diez años, y la Universidad de Greenwich ha querido homenajear al físico madrileño analizando todas las repercusiones de su hallazgo. La Paradoja de Parrondo fue bautizada por el ingeniero australiano Derek Abbot, que fascinado por una charla del matemático, publicó un artículo sobre él en la revista Nature. A partir de ese momento, modificando su lenguaje, el profesor Parrondo y su paradoja empezaron a interesar a investigadores de distintos disciplinas, como Javier Buceta, de la Universidad de San Diego, con quien el español ha estudiado la creación de vida y sus dinámicas; o Daniel Peralta, del Centro Nacional de Inteligencia Español, del que ha surgido otra variante de la paradoja a partir de la Teoría del Caos.

El profesor ha repasado con Babylon Magazine los avatares de su fórmula en estos últimos diez años.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: How did you reach the conclusion that by losing you could end up winning?

J.M. PARRONDO: The paradox consists of two games of chance. Let’s call them game A and game B. Each one of them is a losing game, on average. However, when you alternate them, then the result is a winning game. It’s a strange result that has now been incorporated into the field of the theory of probability and I hope that in the future will achieve more and more applications. The message from the paradox is fairly simple: alternation is not trivial.

BM: What are these games like?

JMP: Game A is very easy. It’s like betting a euro on red or black on roulette at a casino. You have a slightly less than 50% probability of winning a euro and a slightly higher than 50% probability of losing a euro. Game B is more complicated, as the probabilities depend on what you have been winning up to that moment. There is no casino with this type of game. Its rules were designed for the paradox to take place: game B is a loser and, surprisingly, when it’s alternated with game A the result, on average, is a winner.

BM: How has the paradox been applied during the last decade?

JMP: In financial markets there is a phenomenon called "volatility pumping" that consists of creating a winning investment portfolio through distributing capital among losing shares. On the other hand, scientists at the University of Berkeley have also worked on the alternation of strategies in colonies of bacteria, finding that there can be losing strategies (that cause the colony to extinguish itself) while its alternation can lead to the survival and proliferation of the colony. Probably the alternation of environmental conditions (day/night, seasons of the year) was a determinant for the origin of life.

BM: Do you think that your work is properly recognized in Spain?

JMP: Yes, I’ve got no complaints. Except on a few specific occasions, in Spain the scientific quality in universities and research centres is valued justly. It’s different when we speak of Spanish society as a whole, but the fact is that science in Spain has developed some incredible work over the last 30 years. From having hardly any international presence to being right now the tenth scientific power in the world.

BM: Is our planet sustainable in the way it is being developed?

JMP: I believe that sooner or later we are going to have to face up to three things. First, that the resources available on the planet are limited; second, that we are approaching that limit (if we haven’t passed it in some cases); and lastly, that the markets are incapable of managing these limits.

BABYLON MAGAZINE: ¿Cómo llegaste a la conclusión de que perdiendo se puede llegar a ganar?

J.M. PARRONDO: La paradoja consiste en dos juegos de azar, llamémoslos juego A y juego B. Cada uno de ellos es un juego perdedor, en media. Sin embargo, cuando los alternas, entonces el resultado es un juego ganador. Es un resultado curioso que se ha incorporado ya al campo de la teoría de la probabilidad y espero en el futuro dé lugar a más y más aplicaciones. El mensaje de la paradoja es bastante simple: la alternancia no es trivial.

BM: ¿En qué consisten estos juegos?

JMP: El juego A es muy sencillo. Es como apostar un euro a rojo negro en la ruleta de un casino: tienes una probabilidad ligeramente inferior al 50% de ganar un euro y una probabilidad ligeramente superior al 50% de perder un euro. El juego B es más complicado, pues las probabilidades dependen de lo que llevas ganado hasta el momento. No hay ningún casino con este tipo de juego. Sus reglas se diseñaron para que tuviera lugar la paradoja: el juego B sea perdedor y, sorprendentemente, cuando se alterna con el juego A el resultado es, en media, ganador.

BM: ¿Cómo se ha aplicado la paradoja durante la última década?

JMP: En mercados financieros hay un fenómeno denominado "volatility pumping" que consiste en crear una cartera de inversión ganadora distribuyendo el capital en acciones perdedoras. Por otra parte, científicos de la Universidad de Berkeley también han trabajado en la alternancia de estrategias en colonias de bacterias, encontrando que puede haber estrategias perdedoras (que hacen que la colonia se extinga) mientras que su alternancia puede conducir a la supervivencia y proliferación de la colonia. Probablemente la alternancia de condiciones ambientales (día/noche, estaciones del año) fue determinante para el origen de la vida.

BM: ¿Crees que en España se reconoce justamente tu labor?

JMP: Sí, no tengo queja. Salvo en algunas ocasiones puntuales, en España se valora de forma justa la calidad científica en Universidades y centros de investigación. Es distinto cuando hablamos de la sociedad española en conjunto, pero el hecho es que la ciencia española ha desarrollado una labor increíble en los últimos treinta años. De no tener apenas presencia internacional, a ser ahora mismo la décima potencia científica en el mundo.

BM: ¿Es nuestro planeta sostenible tal y cómo se está desarrollando?

JMP: Creo que tarde o temprano tendremos que enfrentarnos a tres cosas. Primero, que los recursos disponibles en el planeta son limitados; segundo, que nos estamos acercando a ese límite (si es que no lo hemos rebasado en algunos casos); y por último, que los mercados son incapaces de gestionar esa limitación.

Two beautiful minds A beautiful mind made the general public aware of the story of John Nash, the mathematician and Nobel Economy Prize winner who fought a battle against himself for many years, managing to push aside the hallucinations and paranoia that he suffered. In the 1960s Nash put forward a conjecture that nobody had been able to resolve. Until now. Spanish mathematicians Javier Fernández de Bobadilla and María Pe Pereira have hit on the solution to the problem after three years of research. Nash’s conjecture is related to the understanding of some “singularities” that come from geometry. What the Nobel laureate, and the rest of the mathematicians who tried afterwards, didn’t achieve was to come up with a demonstration of the problem.

By applying a series of apparently simple methods, the pair of young mathematicians has done it.

The paradox of Spanish in the US

O Digital daybreak PUBLISHERS ARE SPEEDING UP THEIR INCORPORATIÓN INTO THE DIGITAL WORLD. LAS EDITORIALES ESPAÑOLAS ACELERAN SU INCORPORACIÓN AL MUNDO DIGITAL. WORDS BY LUCÍA MANRIQUE IT LOOKS LIKE SPANISH PUBLISHERS have decided to climb aboard, definitively, the giant digital ship. According to the results of the second survey on the Digital Book in Spain, drawn up by the Federation of Guilds of Editors (FGEE), 75% of the publishing houses are currently involved in various processes of digitalization, and if we were to tighten the analysis to cover only those specializing in comics the figure would rise to 94%.

After the initial reticence of the publishing houses (in 2010, the digital format accounted for less than 5% of their sales), 2011 looks set to be –although this type of prophecy renews cyclically- the year of take off for the e-book. It is expected that in 2012 around 25% of the publishing houses will have half their catalogues in a digital version and that 35% will edit half of their new books digitally. It is also predicted that there will be a drop of between 30% and 50% in the price of digital publications.

In traditional market channels the fall in sales of dead tree books is fluctuating at around 7%, although there are certain optimistic nuances behind these numbers in red. Among them is the fact that the income from books dedicated to the teaching of Spanish has increased by 40% and in exports by almost 6%. As far as global volume is concerned, last year 52 million less books were sold than in 2009.

It is obvious that the digitalization of the many fields of texts will entail (it already is) a revolution, but for the moment no nostalgic person will be forced into forgetting how one leafs through, one after another, with pleasure, the pages of a book printed on paper.

PARECE QUE LAS EDITORIALES ESPAÑOLAS han decidido subirse, definitivamente, al gigantesco barco digital.

Según los resultados de la 2ª Encuesta sobre el Libro Digital en España, elaborada por la Federación de Gremios de Editores (FGEE), el 75% de las editoriales está llevando a cabo, en la actualidad, diversos procesos de digitalización, y si ceñimos este análisis solamente a las editoriales especializadas en cómic la cifra ascendería hasta el 94%.

Tras la reticencia inicial de las editoriales (en 2010, el formato digital significaba menos del 5% de sus ventas), 2011 se ha presentado -aunque este tipo de profecías se renuevan cíclicamente- como el año del despegue del ebook. Se espera que en 2012 un 25% de las editoriales posea la mitad de su catálogo en versión digital y que un 35% edite la mitad de sus novedades digitalmente.

Asimismo, también está previsto un descenso de entre un 30% y un 50% en el precio de las obras digitales.

En los canales tradicionales del mercado la caída de las ventas del libro de papel fluctúa alrededor del 7%, aunque existen ciertos matices optimistas detrás de estos números rojos, como el hecho de que la facturación de libros dedicados a la enseñanza del español haya aumentado un 40 % o la exportación casi un 6%. En cuanto al volumen global, el año pasado se editaron 52 millones de libros menos que en 2009.

Es obvio que la digitalización de los múltiples universos textuales supondrá (ya lo es) una revolución, pero de momento ningún nostálgico se verá forzado a olvidar cómo se pasan, una tras una, con placer, las páginas de un libro de papel.

BM: The atmosphere of your records is full of languages...

GT: I don’t stop myself when it comes to doing something that I like, even if it seems strange, like mixing Portuguese, English and Spanish in the same song.

BM: What is that imaginary South like that lives in your music?

GT: The expression “so and so has lost his direction (the north in Spanish)” is strange... Good, then let’s turn it round and say that I have reached the South.

BM: Why the name Gecko Turner?

GT: When I went to live in London at 19 years old my friends there adapted my nickname, Keko. It was fine by me, given that Gecko in English is a “little lizard that lives in warm countries”.

n the buses, in the restaurants, in the park… Spanish in the States is everywhere, in the big cities and the not so big ones. Nevertheless, Spanish is a tongue without prestige in this country. The hegemony of the American identity considers bilingualism to be a threat to their values and to the American dream. The stereotypes of Spanish speakers make the language the symbol of all that has to be abandoned in order to become a true American.

The third generations comply with this demand and stop learning the tongue of their grandparents. Yet, Spanish is the most taught language in the classrooms of the best-known universities. It’s the paradox of Spanish in the US: studying it as a foreign language is accepted and even prestigious, but promote its development among children who see it as one of their mother tongues is a treason to the homeland.

n los autobuses, en los restaurantes, en el parque… el español en EEUU está por todas partes, en las grandes ciudades y en las no tan grandes.

No obstante, el español es una lengua sin prestigio en este país. La hegemonía de la identidad americana considera el bilingüismo como una amenaza a los valores y al sueño americano. Los estereotipos de los hispanohablantes hacen de la lengua el símbolo de todo lo que hay que abandonar para convertirse en un verdadero americano. Las terceras generaciones cumplen con ese requisito y dejan de aprender la lengua de sus abuelos. Sin embargo, el español es la lengua más enseñada en las aulas de las universidades más reconocidas. Es la paradoja del español en EEUU: estudiarla como lengua extranjera es aceptable e incluso prestigioso pero potenciar su desarrollo entre los niños que la consideran una de sus lenguas maternas es una traición a la patria.

Ojos de Brujo When the music´s over nly a band that aspires to cult status, like Ojos de Brujo, could open a report like this when its members have just split up after a career spanning 10 years of success. “We have said yes to everyone for a long time, and the moment has arrived at which you have to say no. We need to go back, to pick up perspective, to rediscover ourselves in the future with the same name or another, with the same people or others. It’s neither the fullstop at the end of a paragraph nor a line, more of an ellipsis..” explained the band at one of its last concerts on a farewell tour that this year is taking them around much of the world. For the last decade Ojos de Brujo has been the group that has achieved the most individual style through fusion with flamenco, a style that’s categorical and recognizable among all their contemporaries. “We produce ourselves, without having record companies behind us. That way we have mixed the sounds and made fusion our trademark. Everyone has his or her own influences. In general, our cooking pot contains 30% flamenco, 20% funk, 20% Latin, 20% Hindu music and 10% that takes in electronic, rock, metal, punk, ethnic music and soul”. The finale of Ojos de Brujo – in which financial and management problems have also had an influence –marks the end of an era, but will surely serve to open up new roads. "The tour [and a record, Corriente vital: 10 años, with team-ups with Estopa, Amaral, Bebe, Jorge Drexler, Orishas and Manolo García] will be the perfect end to a road on which we have learnt a lot and has filled us with happiness and great experiences. Now, the moment has arrived to stop and for other collective projects to emerge". End of message.

“Hemos dicho sí a todo durante mucho tiempo, y llega un momento en que tienes que decir no. Necesitamos volver a coger perspectiva para reencontrarnos en el futuro, con el mismo nombre u otro, con la misma gente u otra. No es un punto ni aparte ni seguido, son puntos suspensivos…”, explicaba la banda en uno de sus últimos conciertos de la gira de despedida que les llevará este año por medio mundo. Ojos de Brujo ha sido durante la última década el grupo que ha logrado a través de la fusión con el flamenco el estilo más independiente, rotundo y reconocible entre todos sus contemporáneos. “Nos producimos nosotros mismos, sin tener detrás a las discográficas. Así mezclábamos los sonidos e hicimos de la fusión nuestro sello. Cada uno tiene sus propias influencias. En general, nuestro puchero lleva 30% de flamenco, 20% de funky, 20% de latin, 20% de música hindú y un 10% donde cabe la electrónica, el rock, el metal, el punk, la música étnica y el soul”. El final de Ojos de Brujo -donde los problemas económicos y de gestión también han influido- marca el fin de de una época, pero seguramente servirá para abrir nuevos caminos. "La gira [y un disco, Corriente vital: 10 años, con colaboraciones de Estopa, Amaral, Bebe, Jorge Drexler, Orishas o Manolo García] será el broche de oro a un camino en el que hemos aprendido mucho y que nos ha llenado de felicidad y grandes experiencias. n 1998, with his garrapatero style [“When you are happy with the little you have” (sic)] he humanized the flamenco from Jerez de la Frontera.

The death of Miguel Ángel Benítez, ‘El Migue’, one of the founders, brought the train to a stop. But from them one can only hope for a renaissance. “We are a pretty happy group. We think sadness is for the daily news broadcasts,” reflects their guitarist, Diego Pozo. They don’t listen to their contemporaries, but they do know why Los Delinqüentes (The Delinquents) are distinct. “We like invented characters and surrealist lyrics a lot, like those of Dylan, Lennon, Zappa and Veneno.” n 1998, su sentimiento garrapatero [“Cuando eres feliz con lo poco que tienes” (sic)] humanizó el flamenco desde Jerez de la Frontera. The African roots of Buika make her feel the music like “an essential language in which to sing is a universal right. La Leyenda del Tiempo (the Legend of Time) was a foundation stone of what was then called ‘New Flamenco’. Also, it was one of the first times that poetic texts were incorporated instead of popular lyrics in the songs.

When I worked on that record I was 18 years old. I felt a tremendous responsibility, as it was my first recording with Camarón de la Isla.

The record included some extraordinary and daring pieces. Some gypsies who bought the disc went back to change it, saying that it was not their Camarón who was singing.

La Leyenda del Tiempo is a masterpìece. It was an historic record in that it became a benchmark for the younger generation and for widening the horizons of the art of flamenco in general. I still listen to it now and again and I always come across new and unusual things.

La Leyenda del Tiempo fue un pilar fundamental de los que llamaban entonces el ‘Nuevo Flamenco’. Además, se trata de una de las primeras veces que se incorporaron textos poéticos en lugar de letras populares del cante.

Cuando trabajé en este disco yo tendría dieciocho años. Sentía una responsabilidad tremenda al ser mi primera intervención discográfica con Camarón de la Isla.

El disco contenía cosas insólitas y atrevidas. Algunos gitanos que habían comprado el disco volvieron a descambiarlo diciendo que no era su Camarón el que cantaba.

Fue un disco histórico por convertirse en el punto de referencia para la joven generación y ampliar los horizontes para el arte flamenco en general. Lo sigo escuchando de vez en cuando y siempre encuentro cosas nuevas y matices insólitos.

A genius in a striped shirt

Some of us flamenco artists experiment with other musical genres because, in my case at least, music has no barriers, no limits. It’s what I learnt, and that’s how I feel.

My father never suffered the criticisms of the total purist. He’s been an authentic genius of flamenco. He always turned negativity into art. Apart from being brilliant in his knowledge of the songs, he was free, he has always been free. Just like him, I want to learn from my mistakes and build on it in the same way.

There has always been and always will be a debate between the defenders of traditional flamenco, the real purists, and those artists who daily tr y to innovate with the genre.

Algunos artistas flamencos experimentamos con otros géneros musicales porque, al menos para mí, la música no tiene barreras, no tiene límites, es lo que aprendí y así lo siento.

Mi padre nunca lo pasó mal ante las críticas de los más puristas. Ha sido el auténtico genio del flamenco. Él siempre convirtió la negatividad en arte. Aparte de ser el más genial conocedor de los cantes, era libre, siempre ha sido libre. Yo quiero, al igual que él, aprender de mis errores y construir en la misma dirección.

Siempre ha habido un debate, y siempre lo habrá, entre los defensores del flamenco tradicional, los más puristas, y los artistas que tratan de innovar el género a diario.

La Shica Do it yourself

he metamorphosis of flamenco dancer Elsa Rovayo into La Shica has brought about a radical and elegant form of flamenco fusion.

The home ground of La Shica is the folk song, but looked at from our times, with a liberal musical perspective. (“I listen to very different things, from Bambino and Lola Flores to Bjork, Antony & the Johnsons and Joan as Police Woman”). The result is a sort of punk revision of the genre: flamenco in a boxing ring. “I love folk music! That’s why I get my teeth into it. And Supercop [her latest disc] is folk, just a tiny bit more noisy.” a metamorfosis de la bailaora Elsa Rovayo en La Shica ha engendrado un proyecto de flamenco fusión radical y elegante.

ebe’s flamenco is like water that washes your face, cleansing away all bad thoughts. The rebellious message of her first disc, with its strong social message, elevated her rapidly, perhaps distortedly, and the woman from Extremadura grew tired of herself and of music. In her way, like Dylan, she had to get rid of all the labels that hung from her neck. “I exercised self control in a big way. I was very bewildered”. At the moment Bebe is composing the themes for her third disc, which will probably be edited after the Summer. It is being recorded in Paris under the management of a reputable French producer.

El mensaje contestatario de su primer disco, con fuerte carga social, la encumbró rápido, quizás distorsionadamente, y la extremeña se cansó de sí misma y de la música. A su manera, como Dylan, tuvo que deshacerse de todos los carteles que colgaron de su cuello. “Me fui a hacer un gran ejercicio de autocontrol. Estaba muy aturdida”.

Actualmente Bebe está componiendo los temas de su tercer disco, que probablemente se edite después del verano y se grabe en Paris, bajo la dirección de un reputado productor francés.

Musicians from different cultures have given birth to a conceptual fusion. “The percussion sounds, with an air of Cuba and Brazil, give us a depth, but we have also played around with oriental, Hindu and African sounds.” This is his spectrum of colours, but the only canvas for Calima is flamenco. “The latest work incorporates afrobeat and reggae. We are not pioneers in flamenco fusion, but I think Calima creates a harmonious mix of flamenco with what’s called ‘world music’”.

No somos pioneros de la fusión flamenca, pero creo que Calima crea una armoniosa mezcla del flamenco con la llamada ‘world music’”.

amari, the soul of Chambao, has been sounding good for more than ten years: as if the tradition had mounted a wild horse and was galloping across an immense Andalusian meadow. “Our music aims to be a refuge for those who need to take cover in it.” A hideout from which has emerged an independent sub genre, flamenco chill, that with time has developed in its own way like a leafy tree. In part that is due to the subtle ethics and aesthetics that Chambao has taught through its lyrical-electronic style and love of life.

Right now María del Mar is composing the songs for their new work, which will be edited between the end of this year and the beginning of 2012.

amari, el alma de Chambao, lleva sonando bien más de diez años: como si la tradición se hubiese subido en un caballo salvaje y estuviese galopando a través de una inmensa pradera andaluza. “Nuestra música pretende ser un refugio para quien necesite cobijarse en ella.” Un escondiste del que ha surgido un subgénero independiente, el flamenco chill, que con el tiempo se ha desarrollado por su cuenta como un árbol frondoso, en parte gracias a la sutilidad ética y estética que ha enseñado Chambao a través de su estilo lírico-electrónico y enamorado de la vida. María del Mar se encuentra ahora mismo componiendo las canciones de su nuevo trabajo, que se editará entre finales de este año y principios de 2012.

The flamenco message

Flamenco has grown in freedom of expression over the last few years, has been mixed with other types of music, and has widened its horizon. Where it has grown, above all, is in scene setting, in the dance and the guitar. The form of singing has remained more static, but it also has gone through an evolution towards freer forms.

Purism is necessary if we understand it as being the roots, the earth that always gives new fruit. Purism is prejudicial when it becomes a mental corset and doesn’t allow you to grow.

I think that many of the new groups take the most superficial part from flamenco.

Flamenco is a very profound art, a very serious one. It has to be seen in the theatres. It still does not have a global commercial expression that has broken down those barriers.

En los últimos años, el flamenco ha crecido en libertad de expresión, se ha fusionado con otras músicas y ha ensanchado su horizonte. Han crecido, sobre todo, el trabajo escénico, el baile y la guitarra.

El cante se ha quedado más estancado, pero también ha tenido su evolución hacia formas más libres.

El purismo es necesario si lo entendemos como la raíz, la tierra que da siempre nuevos frutos. El purismo es perjudicial cuando se convierte en un corsé mental y no te deja crecer.

Creo que muchos de los nuevos grupos toman del flamenco la parte más superficial. El flamenco es un arte muy profundo, muy serio, hay que verlo en los teatros, no tiene todavía una expresión global comercial que haya roto esas barreras.

hen Diego el Cigala heard Bebo Valdés playing the piano for the first time he went into a trance and started to cry. Fernando Trueba –see the interview on page 57- had arranged with them to take a part in his film Estudio 54, an obligatory benchmark for lovers of contemporary Latin jazz. From this first meeting emerged an artistic idyll in which the fusion of Cuban rhythms and the sound of the flamenco voice gave rise to the creation of a classic of Latin music, Lágrimas Negras (Black Tears). But, before this disc the career of el Cigala was already going like a bullet, and many saw him as the new Camarón de la Isla for the similarities in his voice and his impetus in exploring new channels. “Camarón es the Che of flamenco. Thanks to him and my father I am a flamenco singer. But like the maestro from Cadiz, I am flamenco first and then I do these other more risky things, because I see myself as an artist of improvisation and the impromptu. I would never do anything that could hinder the world of flamenco. You cannot leave your norms just like that, you have to use your head”. The flamenco singer from Madrid, born into a gypsy family with a great flamenco tradition, alternates his experimental work with other musical genres and a return to the essence of more traditional flamenco, as if he had artistic double standards: being a lawbreaker and a purist at the same time. Over the next few months he will be on tour through Latin America, presenting his latest disc, Cigala & Tango. It’s the first time that a flamenco artist has dared to work with the Argentinean musical genre par excellence, and he plans to continue in Spain with the tour 3 Flamencos, where he will share the stage with the artists Diego Del Morao and Israel Suárez ‘Piraña’.

uando Diego el Cigala escuchó por primera vez a Bebo Valdés tocar el piano entró en trance y se echó a llorar. Fernando Trueba –ver entrevista en pag. 57- les había citado para participar en su filme Estudio 54, una referencia obligada para los amantes del latin jazz contemporáneo. Tras este primer encuentro surgió un idilio artístico en el que la fusión de los ritmos cubanos y el sonido de la voz flamenca dio lugar a la creación de un clásico de la música latina, Lágrimas Negras. Pero antes de este disco la carrera del Cigala iba ya como un tiro y muchos le consideraban el nuevo Camarón de la Isla por su parecido en la voz y su ímpetu por explorar nuevos caminos. “Camarón es el Che del flamenco, gracias a él y a mi padre soy cantaor. Pero como el maestro gaditano, primero soy flamenco y luego hago estas otras cosas más arriesgadas porque me considero un artista de improvisación e impronta. Jamás haría nada que pudiera entorpecer al mundo del flamenco ya que no te puedes salir de tus cánones así como así, hay que usar la cabeza”. El cantaor madrileño, nacido en el seno de una familia gitana de gran tradición flamenca, alterna sus trabajos de experimentación con otros géneros musicales y la vuelta a la esencia del flamenco más tradicional como si tuviese una doble moral artística: ser transgresor y purista al mismo tiempo. Durante los próximos meses, estará de gira por Latinoamérica presentando su último disco, Cigala & Tango -es la primera vez que un artista flamenco se atreve con el género musical argentino por antonomasia- y tiene previsto continuar por España con la gira 3 Flamencos, donde compartirá escenario con los artistas Diego Del Morao e Israel Suárez ‘Piraña’.

T he morning of the day of the Premios Goya prize ceremony brought life back, at 11 AM, to a cheer ful Fernando Trueba.

[Javier Mariscal has just lit up a Ducados and listens, but he is yet to wake up]. After having won more prizes around the world than he could count on the fingers of his hands - among them an Oscar, just one Goya as director of a cartoon (his first) film -Chico y Rita, his ode to Cuba, could bring back that smile of a film maker starting out on their career to the man from Madrid. Aside from his pose as an elegant, self-assured and genial dandy, Trueba is a political animal, and when the name of the pearl of the Caribbean is on his lips his instinct suffers, he becomes emotional, sings and speaks clearly…

"The film doesn’t tell the story of Bebo Valdés, but each time I see Chico walk I see him. Bebo is now 92 years old, and Chico y Rita has been his last work. It was emotional going to Malaga and showing him the film, in a projection set up only for him and Estrella Morente. Bebo cried like a boy, and I’d never seen him cr y. But the best part was seeing how each time that the music came on he conducted it, as if he were at a music stand, in front of a band. For someone who had left Cuba in the 1960s, re-

turning to a Havana as idealized as the drawings of Xavi must be like entering an amusement park.

"We were frightened to show the film in Cuba.

We had the audacity to make a Cuban film, and I believe that in the end the Cubans have seen it as their own. Bebo always talked to me about all the Galician and Asturian (blood) he has in him, and Cachao and Frank Emilio feel part Andalucian. The other day we were looking through a book and Xavi told me about a ver y strange phrase from José Martí, referring to the era of the revolution and independence: “Any good Spaniard is a Cuban."

"I have not known anybody in my life less Cuban than Fidel Castro, and I include my father, who was from Valladolid. What’s more, with him supposedly being a revolutionar y leader (all for the people, all for the homeland), he doesn’t think the Cubans are capable of changing a light bulb. He looks on them as vegetables, or patients in a coma. What that man has to do is leave, just like Mubarak, like all those who usurp power.

That is the only thing I think about with Cuba: that Fidel Castro is going to get it up the arse. For the moment, I don’t think anything about Cuba until there is a change. Some day the Cubans will have to liberate themselves from these little brothers."

"Chico y Rita is a film about love. I would never make a film about a tyrant, what a drag. We have been working on characters that we love and things that please us, with beautiful cities, with this mixed race woman and that mixed race man, who are really something else… What we like is the life, the colour, the music, the food, the sex, the friends… What do I know!

L a mañana de los Premios Goya devuelve a la vida, a las 11 AM, a un Fernando Trueba risueño.

[Javier Mariscal acaba de encender un Ducados y escucha, pero todavía no se ha despertado].

Después de haber ganado en todo el mundo más premios de los que podría contar con los dedos de sus manos, entre ellos un Óscar, sólo un Goya como director de una (su primera) película de animación, Chico y Rita, su oda a Cuba, podía devolver al madrileño esa sonrisa de cineasta que empieza. Pero además de esa pose de dandy elegante y simpático, seguro de sí mismo, Trueba es un animal político, y cuando tiene entre sus labios el nombre de la perla del Caribe, su instinto sufre, se emociona, canta y habla claro…

pero cada vez que veo a Chico caminar le veo a él. Ahora Bebo tiene 92 años y Chico y Rita ha sido su último trabajo.

Fue emocionante ir a Málaga y enseñarle la película, en una proyección solo para él y Estrella Morente. Bebo lloraba como un niño, y yo nunca le había visto llorar. Pero lo más bonito era ver cómo cada vez que entraba la música él la dirigía, como si estuviera en el atril, delante de una banda.

"Teníamos miedo a pasar la película en Cuba. Hemos

tenido la osadía de hacer una película cubana, y creo que los cubanos la han visto finalmente como propia. Bebo me hablaba siempre de todo lo que él tiene de gallego y asturiano, y Cachao o Frank Emilio se sentían en parte andaluces.

El otro día estábamos ojeando un libro y Xavi me enseñó una frase muy curiosa de José Martí, refiriéndose a la época de la revolución y la independencia: “Cualquier español que sea bueno, es cubano”.

"No he conocido a nadie en mi vida menos cubano que

Fidel Castro, e incluyo a mi padre, que era de Valladolid.

Además, siendo un supuesto líder revolucionario (todo por el pueblo, todo por la patria), no considera a los cubanos capaces de cambiar una bombilla. Los considera vegetales o enfermos en coma. Ese señor lo que tiene que hacer es irse, como Mubarak, como todos los que usurpan el poder. Eso es lo único que pienso de Cuba: que se vaya a tomar por el culo Fidel Castro. De momento, yo no me creo nada de Cuba hasta que no haya un cambio. Algún día los cubanos se tienen que liberar de estos hermanitos".

"Chico y Rita es una película de amor. Yo nunca ha-

ría la película sobre un tirano, ¡qué coñazo! Nosotros hemos estado trabajando sobre personajes que amamos y cosas que nos gustan; sobre ciudades hermosas, sobre esa mulata y ese mulato, que son cojonudos… A nosotros lo que nos gusta es la vida, el color, la música, la comida, el sexo, los amigos…¡Yo qué sé! Las cosas buenas…"

h is memory is intermittent, his speech chaotic, but his name is usually coupled with the adjective brilliant. Out of the head of Javier Mariscal came the mascot for the Olympic Games in Barcelona in ‘92, and now, from a birth that has lasted more than three years of intensive drawing, two entire cities have emerged: Havana and New York. The work of the Catalan artist spans various decades, although in his daily life he is pure action, very much the present. While he is taking in the questions, he plays distractedly on the piano [“You don’t know how to play, Xavi”, says Trueba, sat on a stool to his left], and he starts to answer in a Cuban accent. He does it in such a jokey way that it seems, suddenly, something serious, as if he were somewhere else, still drawing the horizon from the Malecón or the air of the jazz clubs of Lower Manhattan.

"I had already given a lot of thought to the idea of making a full-length feature film. At the studio we had done many cartoon pieces for television, things with much lower budgets, but I always felt a dread thinking about how I was going to fill 90 minutes.

With Fernando you realize that he has spent many years doing it, and he knows in a very humble way, without showing off, what the process is behind a feature film. His head is very

"We filmed first with actors so that Fernando would be more involved in the film language, so that he could direct much better and achieve a sort of more organic movement of the camera, because on the computer everything is too perfect. The cartoonists had experience of this sort of presentation, but Rita’s eye, for example is three times bigger than that of the actress, her neck is much thinner and her tiny waist is minimal.

A cartoon is always an abstract, something much more synthetic and poetic, idealized, full of lies… When you draw you tell thousands of lies to make everything work."

"Before writing a scene, I think Fernando was already thinking about what song was going to go there. The soundtrack is composed before or during the writing of the script, and it has influenced the way of drawing. Music accompanies you right through life. In the 1970s, you went totally mad for records and had to go to London to buy them. Or there were periods when you got up in the morning and had to put on Camarón, or at least four LPs

"I remember when my daughter was very little she was obsessed with The Little Mermaid, and I used to tell her: “daughter, that is pretty bad”. “Daddy, how can you say that if you have never seen her?” she replied. And it really is a very good film. There are thousands of good cartoon films… At present, the most brilliant people are perhaps Pixar and the man who is director of Ponyo [he is on the point of remembering the name of Hayao Miyazaki]. Behind them there are great studios and very well directed professionals, and very clear ideas and concepts.

Also, good scripts…"

s u memoria es intermitente, su discurso caótico, pero su apellido suele ir asociado al adjetivo brillante. De la cabeza de Javier Mariscal surgió la mascota de los Juegos Olímpicos de Barcelona 92’, y ahora, en un parto que ha durado más de tres años de dibujo intensivo, han surgido dos ciudades enteras: La Habana y Nueva York.

La obra del catalán abarca varias décadas, aunque en su vida cotidiana es pura acción, puro presente. Mientras aguarda las preguntas, toca distraídamente el piano [“No sabes tocar, Xavi”, apunta Trueba, sentado en un taburete, a su izquierda], y empieza a responder con acento cubano -lo hace tan en broma que parece, de repente, algo serio-, como si estuviese en otra parte, todavía dibujando el horizonte desde el Malecón o el aire de los clubes de jazz del Bajo Manhattan.

"Ya le había dado muchas vueltas a la idea de hacer

un largometraje. En el estudio habíamos hecho muchas cosas de animación para televisión, cosas con presupuestos mucho más reducidos, pero siempre me daba pavor pensar en cómo iba a rellenar 90 minutos. Con Fernando te das cuenta de que lleva muchos años haciéndolo, y sabe de una manera muy humilde, sin restregártelo por los ojos ni fardar, cuál es el proceso de un largometraje. Tiene la cabeza muy bien ordenada, cosa que yo no tengo".

"Grabamos primero con actores para que Fernando estuviera más implicado en

el lenguaje cinematográfico, pudiera dirigir mucho mejor y conseguir un tipo de movimiento de cámara más orgánico, porque con los ordenadores todo es demasiado perfecto.

Los animadores tenían la referencia de esta actuación, pero por ejemplo el ojo de Rita es tres veces más grande que el de la actriz, el cuello mucho más delgado y su cinturita es mínima. El dibujo animado siempre es una abstracción, algo mucho más sintético y poético, idealizado, lleno de mentiras…

Cuando dibujas haces miles de mentiras para que todo funcione".

"Antes de escribir una escena, creo que Fernando

ya pensaba en qué canción iba a haber allí. La banda sonora está diseñada antes, o durante la escritura del guión, y ha influido en la forma de dibujar.

La música te acompaña a lo largo de la vida. En los 70, eras un loco total de los discos y tenías que ir a Londres a comprarlos, o había temporadas en que te levantabas por la mañana y tenías que ponerte a Camarón, o como mínimo cuatro discos largos de Dylan. Si no te faltaba algo…"

"Recuerdo que cuando mi hija era pequeñita estaba

obsesionada con La Sirenita, y yo le decía: “hija, eso es chungo”. “¿Papá, cómo puedes decirlo si nunca la has visto?”, me respondía ella. Y realmente es una película buenísima. Existen miles de buenas películas de animación… En la actualidad, la gente más brillante quizá sean Pixar y el señor director de Ponyo [está a punto de acordarse del nombre de Hayao Miyazaki]. Detrás de ellos hay grandes estudios y profesionales muy bien dirigidos e ideas y conceptos muy claros. Además, buenos guiones…"

F rom outside the story of Trueba and Mariscal also looks to be a proposal for a problem of logic. A Catalan designer and a Madrid film director who get together to make a cartoon about Cuba which they also film with actors. They were already old friends, but the tiredness of those years and Latin jazz has united them even more. It is evident; although when they mutually praise one another they try not to force a smile from the other. They are synchronized. As much in reality as in fiction, they function like a duet in which Trueba is a soft piano, that of Bebo, which carries the weight of the music, while Mariscal is a virtuoso saxophone that is out of control and interrupts impulsively among the notes. And they sound good…

Fernando Trueba: I set my sights on a street in old Havana drawn by Xavi, especially in the lines. I love to imagine how that would be if taken to the extreme, Xavi creating all of Havana. And he has done it. He has drawn it at almost actual size. It was a sort of vision, buah! we’d make that film, that we’d create a story from there.

Javier Mariscal: What graphic solution do you find in this? That’s what worried me. It

had to be a solution that fitted with the industry, because behind it there would be 200 people working in a similar style. Sometimes we used 3D tools, at others simply water paints or a combination of 2D with 3D. It’s in the final finish of the film where you can make some variations and work on it as if it were a painting on the move, using one of those combustion programmes – I never remember what the fuck they are called!

FT: With the cartoon you also have great control over making it, although fortunately the control is not 100%. Both the film with actors as much as the cartoon would be crap if the director were a sort of Deus ex machina who controls everything. In that case it would be better not to make films…

JM: We are two friends who have brought things to the table that we like a lot. One knows more about the language of film, about how to set up a good soundtrack and produce it; and the other puts forward a design studio with a team of great professionals behind it.

It’s all been very natural and pleasing. I’ve always been giving my opinion, like: “Fernando, wouldn’t it be better if this bit were to be opened up a little more”; “Fernando, why don’t you tell Bebo to play that song in a different way?

FT: I have also learned a lot.

Xavi has introduced me to a load of things about comic books. For example, to Joann Sfar, who I didn’t know and who I am now a great fan of…

With cartoons, we love Mizayagi and Pixar and, of course, Persépolis, Waltz with Bashir and Waking Life…

JM: In general, we like good things. But perhaps you are going to ask me now: “What’s the name of that marvelous man?”

And I’m going to answer: “Well, I haven’t the faintest idea”, even though I will have seen all his films, without knowing they were his. That’s the way I am. I never remember the title of the book I am reading.”

l a historia de Trueba y Mariscal, desde fuera, también parece el planteamiento de un problema de lógica. Un diseñador catalán y un director de cine madrileño que se unen para hacer una película de animación, donde también se rueda con actores, sobre Cuba.

Ya eran viejos amigos, pero el cansancio de estos años y el latinjazz les han unido aún más.

Es evidente, aunque cuando se alaban mutuamente procuran no forzar el sonrojo del otro.

Están sincronizados. Tanto en la realidad como en la ficción funcionan como un dueto donde Trueba es un piano suave, el de Bebo, que lleva el peso de la música, y Mariscal un saxo virtuoso y fuera de control que irrumpe intempestivamente entre las notas.

Y suenan bien…

Fernando Trueba: Me fijé

en una calle de La Habana vieja dibujada por Xavi, sobre todo en las líneas, y me encantó imaginarme cómo sería eso a lo bestia, Xavi creando La Habana entera. Y lo ha hecho, la ha dibujado casi a tamaño natural. Fue una especié de visión, buah!, hagamos esa película, vamos a inventar una historia a partir de ahí.

Javier Mariscal: ¿Qué solución gráfica le encuentro

a esto? Eso me preocupaba.

Tenía que ser una solución industrializable, porque detrás habría doscientas personas trabajando en un mismo estilo. A veces utilizamos herramientas 3D, otras simplemente acuarelas o una combinación de 2D con 3D, y en el acabado final de composición es donde puedes matizar y trabajar como si fuese un cuadro en movimiento, usando uno de esos programas de combustión -Nunca recuerdo cómo coño se llama!

FT: En la animación también tienes un control tremendo en realización, aunque afortunadamente el control no es al 100%. Sería una mierda tanto el cine con actores como el cine de animación si el director fuera una especie de Deus ex machina que lo controla todo. Entonces sería mejor no hacer películas…

JM: Somos dos amigos que han puesto encima de la mesa cosas que les gustan mucho. Hay uno que sabe más de lenguaje cinematográfico, sobre cómo plantear una buena banda sonora y producirla; y el otro propone un estudio de diseño con una serie de grandes profesionales detrás. Pero todo ha sido natural y agradable. Yo siempre he estado opinando: “Fernando, a lo mejor este plano deberías abrirlo un poco más”; “¿Fernando, por qué que no le dices a Bebo que toque esta canción de esta otra forma?

FT: Yo también he aprendido mucho. Xavi me ha descubierto cantidad de cosas de novela gráfica. Por ejemplo, a Joann Sfar, que yo no conocía y ahora soy fanático… En animación, Mizayagi y Pixar nos encantan, y por supuesto Persépolis, Vals con Bashir o Waking Life…

JM: En general, nos gustan las cosas buenas, pero a lo mejor me preguntas ahora: “¿cómo se llama este señor maravilloso?”

Y yo te respondo: “pues ni puta idea”, aunque habré visto todas sus películas, pero de casualidad. Yo soy así. No recuerdo nunca el título del libro que estoy leyendo.

egend has it that Andromeda was one of the most beautiful nymphs of the sea and that after her death the goddess Athena took her with her to the firmament so that she could remain there for eternity. Since then, and beyond the realms of mythology, Andromeda has turned into a galaxy whose splendour can be fully enjoyed from the Canary Islands. Some of the clearest skies in the world, along with those of Chile and Hawaii, are to be found in the Spanish archipelago. That is why two of the planet’s most important astrophysical observatories are sited there: one on the slopes of Mount Teide, located in the Izaña district of Tenerife; and the other at Roque de los Muchachos, on La Palma, which takes its name (The Lads’ Rock) from a group of volcanic rocks that resemble a gang of boys.

Very near these rocks, the largest telescope in the world was set up in 2009, the Grantecan (Gran Telescopio de Canarias). “It was established here because the atmosphere is very stable and pure”, says Pedro Álvarez, the director of an observatory where the daily activity is frenetic. Each morning a technical team reads the reports drawn up during the night and solves any problems that might have arisen.

When the afternoon begins, they check that everything in the system is working and an astronomer and an operator start a job that stretches through to the early morning. Once the new data has been collected it is sent out to those researchers who request it. Principally they are from different Spanish institutes, the European Southern Observatory (ESO), or in other places such as Florida (USA) and Mexico, given that both these countries also participate on a scientific and financial basis in the complex. Among the many discoveries of recent years, one in particular stands out: “finding sodium and potassium on two planets. This opens the way to be-

ing able to measure more compound chemicals, and that is essential for determining whether a planet can harbour life”, says Pedro Álvarez.

On the island of Tenerife you can also find the headquarters of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. It is in this centre where Antonio Mampaso, the man who advised director Alejandro Amenábar on his film Ágora – in which astronomy plays an important part in the story – works. Mampaso and his team are engrossed in the study of interstellar nebulas, particularly those of the planetary nebulas, one of the most beautiful phenomena to be produced in the firmament. “We analyse their physical shape, the material they are made up of, their temperature, their density... to check on the way they are formed and how they keep developing with time.

The stars, the nebula, the galaxies… all the stars are connected by evolutionary cycles that give us clues as to the evolution (Carbon, Nitrogen, Oxygen...) are of the cosmos”. Desde entonces, y más allá de la mitología, Andrómeda se ha convertido en una galaxia cuyo esplendor se puede disfrutar de manera privilegiada desde las islas Canarias. En el archipiélago español se encuentra uno de los cielos más nítidos del mundo, junto con el de Chile y Hawái; por eso se ubican en Canarias dos de los observatorios astrofísicos más importantes del planeta: el del Teide, situado en la zona de Izaña, en Tenerife; y el de Roque de los Muchachos, en La Palma, que recibe su nombre de un conjunto de piedras de origen volcánico con apariencia de una pandilla de chicos. Muy cerca de estas rocas se alza desde 2009 el telescopio más grande del mundo, el Grantecan (Gran Telescopio de Canarias). “Lo levantaron aquí porque la atmósfera es muy estable y pura”, comenta Pedro Álvarez, director del observatorio, donde la actividad diaria es frenética. Cuando empieza la tarde, se comprueba que todo esté operativo en el sistema y un astrónomo y un operador empiezan un trabajo que se alarga hasta la madrugada. Una vez recopilados los nuevos datos, estos se envían a los investigadores que los solicitaron.

Principalmente pertenecen a los distintos institutos españoles, a la European Southern Observatory (ESO) o a otros lugares como Florida (EE. UU.) y México, puesto que ambos países también participan científica y económicamente en el complejo.

tos de los últimos años destaca uno.

“Haber encontrado sodio y potasio en dos planetas. Esto abre un camino para poder medir más compuestos químicos, y eso es esencial para determinar si un planeta puede albergar vida”, asegura Pedro Álvarez.

En la isla de Tenerife también se encuentra la sede central del Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias. En este centro trabaja Antonio Mampaso, el hombre que asesoró al director de cine Alejandro Amenábar en su película Ágora, donde la astronomía tiene un peso importante en su argumento. Mampaso y su equipo están sumergidos en el estudio de las nebulosas del medio interestelar, en particular de las nebulosas planetarias, uno de los fenómenos más bellos que se producen en el firmamento. “Analizamos su física, el material del que están hechas, su temperatura, su densidad... para averiguar sus mecanismos de formación y cómo se van desarrollando con el tiempo. Las estrellas, las nebulosas, las galaxias… todos los astros están ligados por ciclos evo-

lutivos que nos dan pistas para conocer la evolución del cosmos”. Para la mayoría de la gente la astrofísica es un complejo galimatías, pero nadie puede eludir la importancia de cada uno de los descubrimientos que cada día nos llegan a través de los medios de comunicación. “Nuestra rama no es tan difícil de comprender”, argumenta Mampaso. Al astrofísico le gusta plantearse las grandes preguntas, todas esas cuestiones que cualquier ser humano se ha hecho alguna vez, como el origen de la vida en la Tierra. “Esta es una de las grandes incógnitas a las que aún nos enfrentamos. Desconocemos si la vida se formó espontáneamente o llegó a través de un virus o una bacteria ya formados, o si los meteoritos aportaron las moléculas prebióticas necesarias. Lo que sí está demostrado es que los átomos responsables de la vida en la Tierra (Carbono, Nitrógeno, Oxígeno...) están dispersos por todo el Universo en estructuras complejas que pueden mantenerse por sí solas”. Sobre la idea de que en el Universo puedan existir otros

planetas con vida, Mampaso está convencido de que es posible. “Hasta la fecha se han descubierto más de quinientos planetas en otras estrellas, algunos tan pequeños como el nuestro, pero no tenemos la técnica suficiente para saber si contienen vida. Lo que veo más complicado es que haya civilizaciones inteligentes, no hay evidencia válida todavía.

Aunque me encantaría, ¡Les haría tantas preguntas!”.

MIRANDO EL CIELO Nuestro sol es uno de los principales objetos de estudio para los astrónomos. En un futuro muy lejano es probable que la gran estrella se convierta en una nebulosa planetaria, pero la teoría predice que mucho antes aniquilará la Tierra. “Eso es una certeza. Conocemos que cuando se termine el hidrógeno, que es su combustible nuclear, su temperatura superficial bajará, se formará una gigante roja y se extenderá tanto que se comerá a Mercurio, a la Tierra y quizás a Marte. Eso sucederá dentro de 5000 o 7000 millones de años. Afortunadamente, no lo veremos”, confirma Mampaso.

t the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, in Granada, they are carrying out state of the art studies in this field.

Astronomer Josefa Masegosa, one of the few women who is dedicated to the study of space, a discipline cornered mainly by men, works at this centre. “It was not easy to survive in this completely masculine world.

When you arrive you feel as if you are being watched and you spend the day trying to show that you have interesting ideas to offer. Even so, I encourage young women to try it, because fortunately the situation has improved”. The institute was set up in Granada in the 1970s and is one of the leading research centres in Spain.

Today, the people at its installations are involved in examining phenomena that are grouped into three fields of investigation. The sun and the planets 6 6 B A BY L O N M A G A Z I N E

that make up our nearest neighbours; the stars belonging to our galaxy – how they are born, evolve and die – and the search for planets of nearby stars; and an analysis of the galaxies, from the Milky Way to the most distant. Josefa Masegosa, for her part, concentrates her efforts on the study of active galaxies. “They are called that because they host one of the most energetic phenomena in the Universe.

It's assumed that in their nuclei huge black holes can be found and that their light is not of stellar origin but gravitational, in such a way that the energy we observe is the result of a process of accretion (growth by the addition of matter) around that black hole”. This work can be developed, for the most part, thanks to having ever larger and more sophisticated telescopes that allow us to see fainter objects. “Now we have access to deep space and we can pick out nearer galaxies at the moment of their creation. The latest technological advances have enabled us to find out about the characteristics of the radiation that remained after the Big Bang. All these steps have opened up new questions at the same time as allowing us to get close to a pretty near complete view of our visible Universe”, explains the astronomer.

the Calar Alto observatory, in AlmerIa, has the biggest telescopes in Western Europe. nearby Sierra Nevada, where a radio telescope has been built with which they can access millimetric longitude waves. Since 2004, the centre has collaborated with the Calar Alto (CAHA), observatory in Almería, which belongs to Germany’s MaxPlanck Gesellschaft institute and Spain’s Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC - Higher Council for Scientific Research), and has three telescopes, one of them the biggest in Western Europe, which is located in a very distinct place. “It was built here because of the darkness of the sky. There is a norm that regulates light contamination… And also for

However, we still do not know when and how this phenomenon happens”. At present, in Almería, they are developing a new instrument that can be incorporated into one of the telescopes. It is called Carmenes, and its mission will be “the detection of planets that orbit cold stars. But this tool will only be able to determine if the planet that they find is similar to Earth, not if it is habitable”, says Barrado.

I ONLY KNOW THAT I KNOW NOTHINGThere are another seven observatories spread around peninsular Spain, most of which organize visits for anyone to learn more about all their mysteries.

Also, curiously, in the Madrid province district of Robledo de Chavela there is an aerospace tracking complex run by NASA and the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA).

n el Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía, en Granada, se realizan estudios punteros en este ámbito. La astrónoma Josefa Masegosa, una de las pocas mujeres que se dedican al estudio del espacio, una disciplina copada principalmente por hombres, pertenece a este centro. “No fue sencillo sobrevivir en este mundo completamente masculino. Cuando llegas te sientes observada y te pasas el día intentando demostrar que tienes ideas interesantes que aportar. Aún así, animo a las chicas jóvenes a que lo intenten, porque afortunadamente la situación ha mejorado”. El instituto granadino fue creado en los años 70 y es uno de los centros de investigación más relevantes de España.

Actualmente, en sus instalaciones están volcados en examinar fenómenos que se agrupan en tres campos de investigación. El sol y los planetas que forman nuestro entorno más próximo. Las es-

trellas pertenecientes a nuestra galaxia -cómo nacen, evolucionan y mueren- y la búsqueda de planetas en estrellas próximas. Y el análisis de las galaxias, desde la Vía Láctea hasta las más lejanas. Josefa Masegosa, por su parte, concentra sus esfuerzos en el estudio de las galaxias activas. “Se llaman así porque acogen uno de los fenómenos más energéticos del Universo. Se supone que en su núcleo cobijan agujeros negros muy masivos y cuya luz no es de origen estelar sino gravitacional, de forma que la energía que observamos es la que resulta de un proceso de acreción (crecimiento por adición de materia) sobre dicho agujero negro”. Este trabajo se puede desarrollar, en gran parte, gracias a la posesión de telescopios cada vez más grandes y sofisticados que permiten la visualización de objetos más débiles. “Ahora tenemos acceso al espacio profundo y podemos divisar galaxias más cercanas al momento de su creación. Los últimos avances tecnológicos nos han permitido conocer las características de la radiación que quedó tras el Big Bang. Todos estos pasos han abierto nuevos interrogantes a la vez que nos han permitido dar el paso para una visión bastante completa de nuestro Universo visible”, explica la astrónoma.

Parte de esta tecnología también se encuentra en el observatorio de Sierra Nevada, donde se ha construido un

radiotelescopio con el que se puede acceder a longitudes de onda milimétricas. El centro tiene desde 2004 acuerdos con el observatorio de Calar Alto (CAHA), en Almería, un observatorio que en su caso pertenece al Max-PlanckGesellschaft alemán y al Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC) y posee tres telescopios, uno de ellos el más grande de Europa Occidental, situado en medio de un paraje muy particular. “Se construyó aquí por la oscuridad de su cielo, hay una normativa que regula la contaminación lumínica… Y también por el buen tiempo, que permite unas observaciones óptimas”, asegura su director, David Barrado. El español es experto en formación estelar y sistemas planetarios, una especialidad que tiene como objetivo comprender cómo se forman las estrellas y cuáles son sus propiedades básicas. “Además, las evidencias apuntan al hecho de que durante las primeras etapas de la vida en casi todas las estrellas se crea un disco de material a su alrededor que puede dar lugar a la formación de un sistema planetario. Sin embargo, aún no entendemos cuándo y cómo se produce este fenómeno”. Actualmente, en Almería se está desarrollando un nuevo instrumento para su futura incorporación a uno de los telescopios, denominado 'Carmenes', cuya misión será “la detección de planetas que orbiten alrededor de estrellas frías. Pero este artefacto

sólo podrá determinar si el planeta encontrado es tipo terrestre, no si es habitable”, dice Barrado.

SOLO SE QUE NO SE NADA Otros siete observatorios se distribuyen por toda la península y la mayoría organizan visitas para que cualquiera pueda conocer más de cerca todos sus entresijos. Además, curiosamente, en la localidad madrileña de Robledo de Chavela existe un complejo de seguimiento aeroespacial gestionado por la NASA y el Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA).

here are only two other centres like it in the world, one in Goldstone (California) and the other in Canberra (Australia). The three parts of the infrastructure are located at distances of around 120 degrees of longitude around the globe, to enable any spacecraft in orbit to be always under control. The team that works here, all of them Spanish, is in charge of tracking more than 30 missions. One of these is known as Stereo, in which two craft observe the sun from opposite directions allowing us to see it in 3D. The study of this vital star for humankind is important in predicting the sun’s influence on Earth. For example, it is known that solar storms emit particles that travel through space and on reaching our planet affect telecommunications.

But the main object of their studies at the moment is Mars. Currently, there

The passion of this astrophysicist for his work emanates from every single one of his words. Although he has spent more than 30 years at these installations, he still gets surprised by and emotional about what he is experimenting on each day. At the end of February he experienced a truly exciting scenario when the space probe Stardust managed to get closest to the comet Temple 1. “We managed to get 72 images of that moment.

And that is something unrepeatable, as this satellite will never again pass near the comet”. One of the next challenges facing the aerospace complex will come to fruition in June. That is when an antenna offering 24/7 monitoring will be sent to the moon. “The aim is to complete our knowledge of it, to make more detailed maps of its surface and to study its composition.

There are some who believe that it contains Helium 3, an unquenchable source of nuclear energy. That would be a boom. That is why so many agencies are interested. For many years now there has been a political competition to take ownership of the moon,” says the astrophysicist.

Pérez-Zapardiel also agrees with the rest of his colleagues on the value of Spain’s contribution to state of the art studies of the Universe, although it needs much more financial support.

Y esto es algo irrepetible, jamás este satélite volverá a pasar por el cometa”. Uno de los próximos desafíos a los que se enfrentarán en el complejo aeroespacial se llevará a cabo en junio. Será entonces cuando se envíe a la luna una antena que la vigilará 24 horas al día. “El objetivo es completar su conocimiento, hacer mapas más detallados sobre su superficie y estudiar sus componentes.

Perhaps one day Spanish experts will find planets just like Earth, or discover the nature of dark matter, or how the galaxies are formed. But until that moment arrives, the NASA astrophysicist sums up the long road that is still to be travelled with a sentence made popular by Socrates: “I only know that I know nothing. The more we discover, the more conscious we are of how little we know about the Universe”.

aily violence is something that human beings have grown accustomed to accepting as part of our nature. Eduardo Pérez Salguero (born La Unión, Murcia, 1973), knows as much.

That violence which we have learnt to digest without being moved and yet, nevertheless, has real effects on real people, is the basic material with which the man from Murcia constructs his speech in the plastic arts. “My work has been characterized from the start for being a reflection of the violent nature of the contemporary subject and how we have learnt to live with it in such a way that it becomes practically imperceptible to our eyes. I think that is something intrinsic in us.

It’s in our nature, and has always been there in one way or another in artistic representation. It is to be found inscribed in all facets of life; even if it’s true that for a while now the look has been growing ever closer to it, to see it in all its gory detail to the point of touching on the monstrous and disagreeable,

My work is a reflection of our violent nature as a counterpoint to the beauty”. New Yorker J.M. Basquiat has recognized as a reference point that this is “inevitable,” but he feels closer to Madrid pop artist Eduardo Arroyo, “for his way of composing and structuring the image”. His peculiar pop acid universe gets mad with the miseries of consumer society via a saturation of images. His visual language is a zapping of sensations and flashes, like the day to day life in any big city. A critique of the dehumanization of individuals and an enthronement of icons… using their own weapons. “My works talk of noise and the overkill of information in which our lives are immersed. Television, the media, the cinema, the radio, Internet… they bombard us with constant images and information in a way that our brain cannot manage to process. In my paintings I try to reflect on these concepts as a framework or a general context. More than horror vacui, I believe that the fact of living within all this noise makes the empty canvas above all an absolute silence, and that, most definitely, is somewhat unnerving”.

Esa violencia que hemos aprendido a digerir sin inmutarnos y que, sin embargo, tiene efectos reales sobre personas reales, es la materia prima con la que el murciano construye su discurso plástico. “Mi trabajo se ha caracterizado, desde un principio, por ser una reflexión en torno a la naturaleza violenta del sujeto contemporáneo y a cómo hemos aprendido a convivir con ella de tal manera que se hace prácticamente imperceptible a nuestros ojos.

Pienso que es algo intrínseco a nosotros.

Está en nuestra naturaleza y siempre ha estado presente de un modo u otro en la representación artística. Se halla inscrita en todas las facetas de la vida. Si bien es cierto que de un tiempo a esta parte la mirada se ha ido acercando cada vez más a ella para verla con todo detalle hasta el punto de rayar en lo monstruoso y desagradable, en lo gore, como contrapunto a la belleza”. Reconoce al neoyorquino J.M. Basquiat como una referencia “inevitable” pero se siente más cercano al artista pop madrileño Eduardo Arroyo, “por su modo de componer y estructurar la imagen”. Su peculiar universo de pop ácido se ensaña con las miserias de la sociedad de consumo a través de la saturación de imágenes; su lenguaje visual es un zapping de sensaciones y flashes, como el día a día en cualquier gran ciudad. Una crítica a la deshumanización de los individuos y una entronización de los iconos… empleando sus mismas armas. “Mis obras hablan sobre el ruido y la sobre-información en la que vivimos inmersos. La televisión, los medios de comunicación, el cine, la radio, Internet… nos bombardean con imágenes e información constante de un modo que nuestro cerebro no puede llegar a procesar. En mis cuadros intento reflexionar sobre estos conceptos como marco o contexto general. Más que horror vacui, yo creo que el hecho de vivir dentro de todo ese ruido hace que el cuadro en blanco sea sobre todo un silencio absoluto, y eso, desde luego, es algo inquietante”.

he Murcian puts together in perfect equilibrium an amalgam of symbols, textures and a special use of the collage, both visual and material, which allows him to lead the viewer at his whim on a toboggan ride of messages. “In my paintings I seek to promote strong contrasts of colour, to confront basic formal elements with recognizable images that come from popular culture and break up the picture’s surface, tensing the relationships in the different chromatic fields to create certain structural rhythms that condition the reading of the image. In the creative process that I carry out, I’m looking for a hybrid language that picks up all the richness of the plastic arts that each of the different elements and techniques that I use is capable of giving. In this way I conform to a communicative structure that is articulated on the basis of these principles”. Perhaps the ingenuous spirit that impregnates his work minimizes the crudeness of the surface, but his nod to the most scraggy of art brut and his incursion into the most industrial of pop art, always accompanied by in no way conciliatory messages, give an unequivocal halo of antiestablishment to all his works. “In my work I produce an iconization of the visual elements, because that’s what is also produced in real life. Advertising and the mass media continually raise images of daily life to the category of icons - from a cartoon to a marketing logo.

I try to translate all this in my work, bringing it to my territory and within a proper language of plastic art. One of my last projects, White Trash Army, is centered on the iconographic study of a socially degraded group, the white trash, as a metaphor of the defeat of modern man in current society, in the culture of success. This is an idea, defeat, that is very present in my work”. The text messages, between satire and the call to good sense, are a constant in his work, and also one of his identity marks. “The word is transformed into yet another plastic element of my work. It acquires a leading role at the same level as any other image. It is present in the same way as it is in an advertising image, in the design of the front page of a magazine or in a film poster. It forms part of the image. Or to put that better, it’s an image in itself”.

To find the balance in the work of Eduardo Pérez Salguero is to face up to the disappearance of the frontier between high and low culture -“¿does it really exist?”-, and to assume the defeat of western society when faced with its worst enemy: the culture of success: A look at daily violence that can leave nobody indifferent.

El espíritu ingenuo que impregna su trabajo quizá minimice la crudeza de la superficie, pero su guiño al art brut más descarnado, y su incursión en el pop art más industrial, siempre acompañados de mensajes nada conciliadores, otorgan un inequívoco halo de anti establishment a toda su producción. “En mi obra se produce una iconización de los elementos visuales, porque también se produce en la vida real. La publicidad y los mass-media elevan a la categoría de icono imágenes de la vida cotidiana continuamente. Desde un dibujo animado a un logotipo comercial.

Procuro traducir todo esto en mi obra llevándolo a mi terreno y dentro de un lenguaje plástico propio. Uno de mis últimos proyectos, White-trash Army, se centraba en el estudio iconográfico de un grupo social degradado, el White-trash o basura blanca, como metáfora de la derrota del hombre moderno en la sociedad actual, en la cultura del éxito. Ésta es una idea, la derrota, muy presente en mi trabajo”. Los mensajes textuales, entre la sátira y la llamada a la cordura, son una constante en su obra, y también una de sus señas de identidad. “La palabra se transforma en un elemento plástico más dentro de mi obra. Adquiere un papel protagonista a la misma altura que cualquier otra imagen. Está presente del mismo modo que lo está en la imagen publicitaria, en el diseño de la portada de una revista o en el cartel de una película. Forma parte de la imagen. O mejor dicho, es una imagen en sí misma”.

Abalanzarse sobre la obra de Eduardo Pérez Salguero es enfrentarse a la desaparición de la frontera entre alta y baja cultura –“¿es que existe realmente?”-, y asumir la derrota de la sociedad occidental frente su mayor enemigo: la cultura del éxito. Una mirada a la violencia cotidiana que a nadie puede dejar indiferente.

Inventions that (didn’t) change the world

José Val del Omar was ahead of his time, perhaps too far ahead. He wanted to develop a totally revolutionary concept of cinema involving all of the senses. He engaged himself in making it a complete experience, with tactile images and all around sound. He carried out his research at his PLAT (Pico (smell)-Lumínica (light)-Audio-Táctil) laboratory where he dreamed up imaginative inventions such as the Diáfono, which he intended to be a listening experience capable of encapsulating the spectator. However, this and many more of his contraptions got no further than the drawing board.

Apart from being a prolific writer selling millions of copies of his books, Alberto Vázquez Figueroa is a vocational inventor who uses water as the main object of his studies. In 2003 the man from the Canary Islands patented a desalinization system that involved raising sea water to a height of 600 metres and then letting it fall, obtaining fresh water and electricity at the same time.

However, the contraption from the author of Tuareg came in for heavy criticism. It appeared that, the energy needed to raise the water would be much greater than the electricity obtained at the end of the process.

José Val del Omar fue un adelantado a su tiempo, quizás demasiado. Quiso desarrollar un concepto totalmente revolucionario de cine en el que participasen todos los sentidos. Se empeñó en que se convirtiera en una experiencia total, con imágenes táctiles y sonidos envolventes. Investigó en su Laboratorio PLAT (Pico-Lumínica-AudioTáctil) y allí concibió ocurrentes inventos como el Diáfono, que pretendía ser una experiencia auditiva capaz de encapsular al espectador.

Sin embargo, tanto éste como la mayoría de sus artilugios se quedaron sólo en proyectos.

Además de un prolífico escritor con millones de copias vendidas, Alberto Vázquez Figueroa es un inventor vocacional que tiene al agua como su principal objeto de estudio. El canario patentó en 2003 un sistema de desalinización que consistía en elevar el líquido marino hasta los 600 metros de altura y después dejarlo caer, obteniendo agua dulce y electricidad al mismo tiempo. Sin embargo, el artefacto del autor de Tuareg fue severamente criticado. Al parecer, la energía necesaria para remontar el agua sería mucho mayor que la electricidad obtenida al final del proceso.

With more than 48 registered patents, he could be considered as Spain’s Leonardo da Vinci. Jerónimo de Ayanz developed inventions of all kinds in a very short period of time: a diving suit, a prototype submarine, an oven for distilling sea water…But the reason why he is still remembered is for having been (surely) the first person in history to use a steam engine. He applied it to extracting water from flooded mines, but his gadget got mislaid over the course of the centuries and the discovery of the steam engine would be attributed to Thomas Savery some years later.

During the 1930s many researchers looked for substitutes for petroleum.

Rafael Suñén, from the Aragon region, hit upon the formula for obtaining the prized synthetic black gold from vegetable residue, rather than minerals, as had been done up to then. After a series of investigations in Paris, he returned to Spain in 1934 to present his new project once again. At last he managed to get a hearing. What’s more, he got a laboratory to enable him to continue his research.

However, the Civil War dashed his hopes.

He died in 1936 in a jail in Madrid, and his talent with fuel was lost for ever.

from square one. Following decades of military coups, frustrated guerrillas and liberalism without creases, or to be precise because of all these, Latin America has begun once and for all to reinvent itself.

Warning of this was given by journalist Ryszard Kapuscinski, who spoke face to face with many of the people who had a key part in the history of the continent: "In Latin América inequality has its nuance.

The whites are very or reasonably rich. The coloured people are the poor. One cannot separate the ethnic question from the social one. The two mask one another", wrote the author of The Soccer War. Although the latest report from the Economic Commission for Latin America (CEPAL) detected a reduction in poverty of 1% and in extreme poverty of 0.4 %, the sheer number of needy remains alarming: 180 million, 45% of the Latin American population still lives on less than a dollar a day.

An example to illustrate the situation can be found in El Salvador. In 2009, the UN drew up a detailed study about the causes that brought to power a former guerrilla from the Farabundo Marti Liberation Front (FMLM). One of the reasons for producing the report was that the Central American country gathered together all the fuel that for decades was used to set light to the political structures of the continent. Envy, poverty, and the open wounds of a bloody civil war.

The first finding of the analysis was that after 20 years of democracy the chasm between rich and poor had multiplied 74 times. The country was like a bomb of unhealthiness and insecurity waiting to go off. Millions of inhabitants were living in rural areas without so much as access to drinkable water and threatened by the ghastly violence of gangs like the Maras. “So, was it surprising that a country voted for an option that did not accept this destiny?” as the ex minister of culture for Nicaragua, Ernesto Cardenal, asked on one occasion.

Faults in the liberal system One of the reasons for the change appears to be found in a failure of the application of liberal doctrines. From this, some analysts consider that to understand the swing to the left in countries like Venezuela or Bolivia, one has to dig into the times before colonization. It could be a formula for seeking out particular development models, aside from those of the West and far from the uncontrolled free market.

French analyst Marc Saint Upèry does not believe in political coincidences. He sees the arrival in power of progressive thinking governments in countries without a leftist voting tradition, such as Ecuador and Paraguay, as “a demonstration that the voters feel more or less authorized to try something new because of the examples

set by their neighbours". It looks as if he may be right. If one compares the political colour of the continent in 1997 and in 2011, the change is radical. Now it is scarlet.

The specialist in Latin America at the Fundación Alternativas (Alternatives Foundation), Ángeles Sánchez, touches a sore point with the Washington Consensus, for the battery of goals set by the international financial bodies in the 1990s to boost the growth of the continent, to adapt the historical revolutionary postulations of Latin America to the modern times imposed by the western democracies. And it was done little by little.

"Not only did the Consensus not resolve problems such as poverty, it created new problems linked to business management such as the example of the privatization of access to water, telecommunications, energy, agricultural policy and food safety", explains Ángeles Sánchez.

For economist Joseph Stiglitz, that strategy was a surgical economic design of the United States to apply a particular form of “fundamentalist liberalism that favours the commercial interests of the First World above any other” and, in doing so, served as an antidote to the military dictatorships that shook up the continent.

The conservative foundation, FAES, does not think that way. For this think tank, chaired by former Spanish Prime Minister José María Aznar, there are

successful liberal models such as Chile and Brazil. An extensive analysis, America Latina: Una agenda de Libertad, drawn up in 2007 by the former Secretary of State for International Cooperation, Miguel Ángel Cortés, acknowledges problems in the application of the “US doctrine”, but also points out that it left a positive legacy: the reduction to manageable levels of some gigantic fiscal deficits and colossal rates of inflation. "The economic bonanza and the growth achieved after the application of the prescriptions of the IMF and the World Bank were not taken advantage of to combat poverty", says Cortés. As a matter of fact, liberal critical thinking considers that the absence of “balanced and responsible” viable social policies threw out of the window the opportunity that the period of prosperity, short yet intense, had offered them. And what was worse, this social fiasco "was favourable to the radical left, the politicians and the populist movements, who did not meet any obstacles to manipulating reality, to promoting anti-western and anti-American feelings and a phobia of the market,” says the report from FAES. With all the liberal imperfections, the current director of the international area of the foundation, Alberto Carnero, believes that if one looks dispassionately "the principles of the Washington Consensus continue to be valid, although first it is necessary to reestablish the confidence lost because of the global financial crisis". Flexibility, a rein on spending, and transparency in management is what liberal thinking demands to put a brake on what it considers to be "a wave that threatens the State of Law and the independence of the judges".

Mexico and Colombia have remained as the principal (and powerful) bastions of financial liberalism. These are islets from where they seduce their neighbours with a "responsible" free market in the face of the "populist" discourse of Venezuela, that in spite of everything still has not carried out the fiscal reform that ought to seriously transform its financial system. And even in contrast to the proindigenous policies of Bolivia, classified as "radical", when its monetary policy continues to be in the same hands as it was in the 1980s that carried the country to the abyss of hyperinflation. Similar processes to the Bolivian example occur in Paraguay and Ecuador, and there are ever increasing doubts about a Nicaragua whose president attacks women’s organizations, prohibits abortions on medical grounds, and perverts free elections.

According to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the middle class in Latin America –metaphorically caged- is economically vulnerable. Few heads of family have a university degree, and many run the risk of falling into poverty in the case of illness or unemployment. # PHOTO SEBASTIÁN FRIEDMAN

Tras décadas de golpes militares, guerrillas frustradas y liberalismo sin pliegues, o precisamente a causa de todos ellos, Latinoamérica ha comenzado de una vez por todas a reinventarse. Ya lo advirtió el periodista Ryszard Kapuscinski, que trató cara a cara con muchos de los rostros que escribieron una parte clave en la historia del continente: "En América Latina la desigualdad tiene su matiz. El blanco es muy o medianamente rico. El color es de los pobres. No se puede separar la cuestión étnica de la social. Las dos se solapan", escribió el autor de La guerra del fútbol.

Aunque el último informe de la Comisión Económica para América Latina (CEPAL) detecta una disminución de la pobreza del 1% y de la indigencia del 0,4 %, el volumen de necesitados sigue siendo estremecedor: 180 millones, el 45% de la población latinoamericana continúa subsistiendo con menos de un dólar al día.

Un ejemplo para ilustrar esta situación se encuentra en El Salvador. En 2009, la ONU elaboró un estudio detallado sobre las causas que llevaron al poder a una antigua guerrilla del FMLM. Una de las razones para elaborar aquel informe fue que el país centroamericano reunía en su interior toda la gasolina que durante décadas se utilizó para incendiar las estructuras políticas del continente. La codicia, la pobreza y las heridas abiertas de una sangrienta guerra civil.

La primera consecuencia de este análisis fue que tras 20 años de democracia el abismo entre ricos y pobres se había multiplicado por 74. El país era como una bomba de insalu-

bridad y de inseguridad a la deriva.

Millones de habitantes viviendo en zonas rurales sin acceso ni siquiera al agua potable y amenazados por la violencia atroz de pandilleros como las Maras. “¿Cómo entonces sorprenderse de que un país vote por una opción que no acepta este destino?”, se cuestionaba en una ocasión el ex ministro de Cultura nicaragüense, Ernesto Cardenal.

Fallos en el sistema liberal Una de las causas del cambio parece encontrarse en el fracaso en la aplicación de las doctrinas liberales.

De ahí que algunos analistas consideren que para entender el viraje a la izquierda en países como Venezuela o Bolivia, deba escarbarse en el tiempo anterior a la colonización.

Puede que sea una fórmula para buscar modelos de desarrollo propios, ajenos al brillo de Occidente y alejados del descontrolado libre mercado.

El analista francés Marc Saint Upèry no cree en las coincidencias políticas. Observa que la llegada al poder de gobiernos progresistas en países sin tradición electoral izquierdista, como Ecuador y Paraguay, "es una muestra de que los electores se sienten más o menos autorizados a probar algo nuevo por los ejemplos de sus vecinos". Parece que no le falta razón. Si se confronta el color político del continente en 1997 y en 2011, el cambio es radical. Ahora es escarlata.

La especialista del área latinoamericana de la Fundación Alternativas, Ángeles Sánchez, pone el dedo en la llaga del Consenso de Washington, la batería de consignas dictadas por los organismos financieros internacionales en los años 90 para impulsar el crecimiento del continente y adecuar los históricos postulados revolucionarios de Latinoamérica a los tiempos modernos impuestos por las democracias occidentales. Y se ha hecho a fuego lento. "El Consenso no sólo no resolvió problemas como la pobreza sino que dio origen a nuevos problemas

ligados a la gestión mercantilista, como por ejemplo la privatización del acceso al agua, las telecomunicaciones, la energía, la política agrícola y la seguridad alimentaria", explica Ángeles Sánchez.

Para el economista Joseph Stiglitz aquella estrategia fue un diseño económico quirúrgico de EEUU para aplicar un peculiar liberalismo “fundamentalista que primara los intereses comerciales del Primer Mundo por encima de cualquier otro” y, de paso, que sirviese como antídoto contra las dictaduras militares que sacudían el continente.

La conservadora fundación FAES no opina de la misma forma.

Para este think tank que preside el ex presidente del Gobierno español José María Aznar hay modelos liberales exitosos como Chile y Brasil.

este fracaso social "propició que la izquierda radical, los políticos y movimientos populistas, no encontraran obstáculos para manipular la realidad, para fomentar el antioccidentalismo y antiamericanismo y la mercadofobia", señala el informe de FAES. Con todas las imperfecciones liberales, el actual director del área internacional de la fundación, Alberto Carnero, cree que si se mira sin apasionamiento "los principios de Washington siguen siendo válidos aunque primero es necesario restablecer la confianza perdida por esta crisis financiera global".

Flexibilidad, contención del gasto y transparencia en la gestión es lo que demanda el pensamiento liberal para frenar lo que se considera "una ola que amenaza el Estado de

En el extenso análisis América Latina: Una agenda de Libertad elaborado en 2007 por el ex secretario de Estado para la Cooperación Internacional, Miguel Ángel Cortés, se reconocen problemas en la aplicación de la “doctrina estadounidense”, pero también se puntualiza que dejó un positivo legado: la reducción hasta unos niveles manejables de unos gigantescos déficits fiscales y unas tasas de inflación descomunales.

"La bonanza económica y el crecimiento logrado tras la aplicación de las recetas del FMI y Banco Mundial no fueron aprovechadas para combatir la pobreza", afirma Cortés. De hecho, el pensamiento liberal crítico considera que la ausencia de políticas sociales viables, "equilibradas y responsables", tiró por la borda la oportunidad que el periodo de prosperidad, corto pero intenso, les había brindado. Y lo que es peor,

Derecho y la independencia de los jueces".

México y Colombia se han quedado como los principales (y poderosos) bastiones del liberalismo económico.

Los islotes desde donde seducir a sus vecinos con un mercado libre "responsable" frente al discurso "populista" de Venezuela, que pese a todo sigue sin acometer la reforma tributaria que debe transformar, seriamente, su sistema financiero. E incluso como contraste al "indigenismo" de Bolivia, calificado de "radical" cuando su política monetaria sigue en las mismas manos que en los años 80 llevaron el país al desfiladero de la hiperinflación. Procesos similares al caso boliviano suceden en Paraguay y Ecuador, y cada vez asaltan más las dudas sobre una Nicaragua cuyo presidente ataca a las organizaciones de mujeres, prohíbe el aborto terapéutico y pervierte las elecciones libres.

The director of the international area of FAES, Alberto Carnero, makes the point that not all the left on the continent are the same.

For example, one cannot compare the management carried out by Lula in Brazil with that of Rafael Correa in Ecuador. "Or with that applied by Michelle Bachelet, of the Socialist party in Chile, whose moderate policies produced excellent results", he adds.

The Brazilian model Even when one talks of Ecuador there are nuances. The global crisis arrived in Quito with a dagger between its teeth. The president who does have a clear horizon is Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, inheritor of the important moderator role that Lula pushed in the region and which won him the sympathy of much of the world. "From the legitimacy that his leftist ideology brought him, Lula, and now Rousseff, have known how to consolidate an economic project that is dominant in the region", explains Alberto Montero, professor of economics at the University of Malaga and an expert on Latin America.

A policy that some are starting to call “low intensity subimperialism,” it is a realistic hub on which to support regional integration that is sought by other leaders such as Chávez and Correa. Brazil is the Latin muscle.

It alone represents half of the GDP and the population of South America. And its industrial potential is the most diversified on the continent. It has managed to merge the reduction of structural poverty with economic grow th by finding in the poor a new class of active consumers.

It’s almost a miracle that now demands a prominent place for Brazil among the power ful on the Earth. Even the Cubans know that their full reintegration in the continent necessarily passes through Brasilia.

Despite the many nuances that make up the new political map of the Cono Sur (the southern part of Latin America), the Latin continent “is living an awakening", as Kapuscinski put it in an amazing piece of prose after making a tour of the most painful places in the continent and witnessing the most cruel and absurd of wars. "There is an ethnic renaissance, that of the original inhabitants of these lands, whose demand to be fully fledged members of the new world extends from Mexico to land’s end in the south,” concluded this historic optimist in one of his last lapidariums. Marc Saint Upèry, uno de los principales expertos en Latinoamérica, no tiene dudas sobre el inapelable triunfo neoconservador en Colombia. Los rebeldes colombianos provocan náuseas. "La perpetuación de su lucha armada es el

principal obstáculo al progreso de una izquierda ideológica que no termina de romper con un grupo armado decadente", sentencia.

México es diferente. El problema de la otra gran locomotora latinoamericana es el deterioro diario de la seguridad interna y la intensificación espectacular de las guerras mafiosas entre narcotraficantes y un Estado débil y corrupto. Cualquiera que pregunte al Departamento de Estado de EEUU cuál es hoy su mayor preocupación continental, recibirá una respuesta unánime: se teme diez veces más al México del impecable Felipe Calderón que a la Venezuela del deslenguado Hugo Chávez. Y ni siquiera se pondrán de acuerdo sobre a quién de ellos colgar el cartel de "populista", un eufemismo tan despectivo como volátil que Occidente utiliza para señalar a aquellos líderes que cuestionan la eficacia del libre mercado. "Desde luego que los gobiernos latinoamericanos cuentan con elementos populistas pero también populares, en el sentido de que son plenamente aceptados y activamente apoyados por los ciudadanos, porque tocan la espina dorsal del sistema social y económico", afirma Rubén Mar-

tínez, director del Centro de Estudios Políticos y Sociales (CEPS), una fundación que trabaja con gobiernos progresistas de América Latina como Ecuador y Venezuela.

El director del área internacional de FAES, Alberto Carnero, matiza que no todas las izquierdas del continente son semejantes.

Por ejemplo, no se puede comparar la gestión que realizó Lula en Brasil con la de Rafael Correa en Ecuador. "O con la que aplicó Michelle Bachelet, integrante del Partido Socialista de Chile, cuya política moderada dio excelentes resultados", añade.

Brasil es el músculo latino. Él solo representa la mitad del PIB y de la población de Suramérica. Y su potencial industrial es el más diversificado del continente. Ha logrado fusionar la reducción de la pobreza estructural con el crecimiento económico al encontrar en los pobres una nueva clase de consumidores activos. Casi un milagro que ahora exige un lugar destacado entre los poderosos de la Tierra. Hasta los cubanos saben que su reintegración plena en el continente pasa obligatoriamente por Brasilia.

Pese a tantos matices que configuran el nuevo mapa político del cono sur, el continente latino “vive un despertar", tal y como dejó escrito Kapuscinski con una prosa deslumbrante tras recorrer los lugares más dolientes del continente y ser testigo de las más cueles y absurdas guerras.. "Hay un renacimiento étnico, el de los habitantes originarios de estas tierras, cuya exigencia de ser miembros de pleno derecho del nuevo mundo se extiende desde México hasta el Finisterre sur", concluyó este optimista histórico en uno de sus últimos lapidariums. The Curia doesn’t speak Spanish La Curia no habla español

A

BIT LESS THAN HALF of the 1.18 billion Catholics in the world speak Spanish as their first language. That’s according to the Annuario Pontificio, the official directory that each year pulls together the church’s data and statistics and which represents an essential tool for those who want to keep up with what’s happening at the Vatican. This percentage of the faithful would make one think that within the organs of power at the Holy See, the Congregations and the Pontifical Councils, known by many as the “ministries” of the Vatican, Spanish speakers would be well represented. Nothing could be further from the truth. Only the Spanish can boast of having some of their compatriots in high positions in the Curia. For the countries of Latin America that share our language, the situation is almost one of a desert. Today only one of the members of their church heads one of these “ministries” at the Holy See, and his is only a second tier dicastery (department) Spain is one of the countries that most worries Benedict XVI, a Pope who is already well enmeshed in the West. Proof of this can be seen in the numerous mentions of our country in his book cum interview, Light of the World, and the several times he has visited during his pontificate. This summer he will be in Madrid for World Youth Day, just nine months after having travelled to Santiago de Compostela and Barcelona. The Pope’s interest in things Spanish can also be seen in the appointments made by the Curia, where Spain is today much better represented than it was only a few years ago. It has a cardinal, Antonio Cañizares, as prefect of a Congregation, that of the Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, which takes care of the liturgy. There are also a couple of secretaries, the term used for the second in command of a dicastery, at other leading Congregations: the doctrine of the faith, what was once the Inquisition, and that of the clergy, which is in charge of the diocesan priests. In the first the “number two” is the Jesuit Luis Francisco Ladaria and in the second Celso Morga. The list of Spaniards in positions of responsibility is completed by José Luis Redrado, secretary of the Pontifical Council for Health Care Workers, the Vatican’s “Ministry of Health”, and Juan Ignacio Arrieta, who holds the same post at the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts. A further row back is Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, who chairs one of the Pontifical Academies, the one for Life.

The special attention paid to Spain by the Pope contrasts with a measure of oversight as regards Spanish speaking Latin America: in a short period it has gone from having four cardinals in the Curia to just one. This attitude was also made clear at the last consistory (a formal meeting of the Sacred College of Cardinals): of the 24 cardinals created only two, one Spanish and one Ecuadorian, pray in our language. With this material it looks unlikely that a future conclave might elect a Pope who has Spanish as his mother tongue, something that has not happened since the time of the Borgia Pope, Alexander VI, now more than 500 years ago.

LGO MENOS DE LA MITAD de los 1181 millones de católicos del mundo habla español como primer idioma. Lo dice el Anuario Pontificio, el compendio que recoge cada año los datos y estadísticas de la Iglesia y que constituye una herramienta imprescindible para quien sigue la actualidad del Vaticano. Este porcentaje de fieles invitaría a pensar que en los órganos de poder de la Santa Sede, las Congregaciones y Pontificios Consejos, conocidos por muchos como “ministerios” vaticanos, los hispanohablantes están bien representados. Nada más lejos de la realidad. Sólo los españoles pueden presumir de contar con algunos de sus compatriotas en puestos importantes de la Curia. Para los países de Latinoamérica que comparten nuestra lengua la situación es casi un desierto. Hoy sólo uno de los miembros de su Iglesia ocupa el vértice de uno de estos “ministerios” de la Santa Sede, siendo además un dicasterio de segunda fila.

España es una de las naciones que más preocupa a Benedicto XVI, un Papa ya de por sí muy volcado en Occidente. Lo prueban las numerosas menciones a nuestro país en su libro-entrevista Luz del mundo y las varias veces que lo va a visitar durante su pontificado. Este verano estará en Madrid con motivo de la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud sólo nueve meses después de haber viajado a Santiago de Compostela y Barcelona. El interés español del Pontífice también se ve en los nombramientos de la Curia romana, donde España está hoy mucho mejor representada que hace unos pocos años. Cuenta con un cardenal, Antonio Cañizares, como prefecto de una Congregación, la del Culto Divino y la Disciplina de los Sacramentos, que cuida la liturgia. Hay además un par de secretarios, término con que se denomina al segundo de a bordo de un dicasterio, en otras Congregaciones importantes: la de Doctrina de la Fe, la antigua Inquisición, y la del Clero, que se encarga de los sacerdotes diocesanos. En la primera el “número dos” es el jesuita Luis Francisco Ladaria y en la segunda Celso Morga. La lista de españoles en puestos de responsabilidad la completa José Luis Redrado, secretario del Pontificio Consejo para la Pastoral Sanitaria, el “ministerio de Sanidad” vaticano, y Juan Ignacio Arrieta, su homólogo en el Pontificio Consejo para los Textos Legislativos. En una segunda línea se sitúa Ignacio Carrasco de Paula, que preside una de las Pontificias Academias, la de la Vida.

La especial atención del Papa por España contrasta con el cierto olvido que vive la Latinoamérica hispanohablante: en poco tiempo ha pasado de tener cuatro cardenales en la Curia a sólo uno. Esta actitud también quedó patente en el último consistorio: de 24 cardenales creados sólo dos, un español y un ecuatoriano, rezan en nuestro idioma. Con estos mimbres parece difícil que en un futuro cónclave resulte elegido un Pontífice que tenga en el español a su lengua madre, algo que no ocurre desde los tiempos del Papa Borgia, Alejandro VI, hace ya más de 500 años.

The Councils for Spanish Residents Overseas (Consejos de Residentes Españoles en el Exterior -CREE) are a body set up to bring together Spanish citizens in a local community, in all those constituencies where the census shows there to be a minimum of 1,200 people inscribed.

With spring just arrived we opted to go up to one of the highest areas of the mountains near Madrid for the photo and video session with Rubén Ochandiano and Michelle Jenner, thinking that the long winter was giving way to good weather. The setting is spectacular, but it’s perishing cold. When we get our of the van we hear: “What bastards!” It’s Rubén, an actor who above all else is natural and spontaneous. Michelle laughs rather than cries because that’s the way she is, happy and smiling. She finds it funny, the tone of voice of her new film partner. As a matter of fact we have been thinking that we would like to make a musical comedy”, Rubén tells us while Michelle starts singing during one of the changes of photo shoots. I take advantage of the moment to ask them about their work in No tengas miedo, a film in which Montxo Armendáriz dares to look at the complex subject of the abuse of children and which, on the point of being premiered, promises to be one of the films of the year. “It’s a film that turns your stomach a bit, but I believe it’s very necessary. Michelle plays the role of a daughter who has been sexually abused by her father. She has a psychological trauma and in the film she is treated with something that’s little known, the EMDR therapy”, explains Rubén. “What has surprised me is that now that I know about this problem there are far more people than we think who have suffered from it”, adds Michelle, for whom this is her first leading role in the world of cinema. The attractive Catalan, with her French and English roots, has been wrapped up in the world of advertising, cinema and television since she was small. She has even been a dubber of films, giving voice to such popular characters as the inseparable friend of Harry Potter, Hermione. At just 24 years old, Michelle is one of the best known faces on television thanks to her part as Sara in the successful series Los hombres de Paco. It’s a work that has “opened many doors and thanks to which I am now making films,” but of which she was also getting “tired” and needed a change, to interpret other characters, to reach other heights. Something similar happened to Rubén following his part in the popular youngsters’ series Al salir de Clase (On leaving school), at the end of the 1990s.

It provided him with a popularity that is still going today and with which to a certain measure he has typecast himself. “I am surprised after so many years that people still remember you. That said, it’s almost as bad that they don’t typecast you and nobody knows who you are”. Several years have passed since he appeared in the series and the actor from Madrid has an impressive CV after repeating performances under the direction of Montxo Armendáriz.

His first film was Silencio Roto (Broken Silence) in 2001, for which he received a nomination for the best new actor. He has also worked with two of the leading directors of the moment; Pedro Almodóvar, in Los Abrazos Rotos (Broken Hugs), and Íñigo González Iñárritu in Biutiful. “With Almodóvar the casting process was very tough, but being directed by Pedro is a privilege and being part of that film has been a dream.

And with Iñárritu it’s playing in the front row as, apart from being a film that has pulled in spectators around the world, I had the luck to act with Javier Bardem”.

Michelle goes green with envy when her cast companion talks about Almodóvar. Suddenly, she shouts: “Pedroooo! I want to be one of your girls!” This scene takes place in a studio in the centre of Madrid where we have transferred to after it began to snow in the mountains. The session is about to finish and the actors are now tired. These days they are doing promotion and each of them has other professional commitments. Michelle is about to launch another new film by Nacho Vigalondo, Extraterrestre, and Rubén is preparing for the public’s reaction to his second play as a theatre director, La Gaviota (The Gull). As if it’s an actual film, Michelle brings the studio to order with a “Cut!” And so we have no other choice than prepare ourselves to go. The show is over.

Recién estrenada la primavera optamos por subir a una de las zonas más altas de la sierra de Madrid para la sesión de fotos y vídeo con Rubén Ochandiano y Michelle Jenner, pensando en que el largo invierno daba paso por fin al buen tiempo. La localización es espectacular, pero hace un frío que pela. Cuando bajamos de la furgoneta se escucha: “¡Qué cabrones!”.

Es la voz de Rubén, un actor que si algo tiene es naturalidad y espontaneidad.

Michelle se ríe y no por no llorar sino porque ella es así, alegre y risueña y le hace gracia el tono de voz de su nueva pareja cinematográfica. Los dos se conocen y se nota la complicidad que existe entre ambos. “Nos gusta mucho trabajar juntos, de hecho hemos pensado que nos gustaría hacer una comedia musical”, nos dice Rubén mientras Michelle se pone a cantar en uno de los cambios de las fotos. Aprovecho el momento para preguntarles por su trabajo en No tengas miedo, un película en la que Montxo Armendáriz se atreve a tratar el complejo tema del abuso de menores y que, a punto de estrenarse, promete ser uno de los filmes del año. “Es una peli que te deja el cuerpo un poco al revés, pero creo que es muy necesaria. Michelle hace el papel de una hija que ha sido abusada sexualmente por su padre. Ella tiene un trauma psicológico y en la película se trata algo poco conocido como es la terapia del EMDR”, explica Rubén. “Lo que me ha sorprendido es que ahora que conozco este problema hay mucha más gente de lo que pensamos que lo ha sufrido”, añade Michelle, para quien éste es su primer papel como protagonista en el mundo del cine. La guapa catalana de raíces francesas e inglesas lleva desde pequeña enrolada al mundo de la publicidad, cine y televisión e, incluso, ha sido dobladora de películas poniendo voz a personajes tan populares como la inseparable amiga de Harry Potter, Hermione. Con tan sólo 24 años, Michelle es una de las caras más conocidas de la televisión gracias a su papel de Sara en la exitosa serie Los hombres de Paco, trabajo que “le abrió muchas puertas y gracias a eso ahora estoy haciendo pelis” pero del que también estaba algo “cansada” y necesitaba cambiar e interpretar otros personajes, tocar otros registros. A Rubén le pasó algo parecido tras su intervención en la popular serie juvenil Al salir de Clase, de finales de los Noventa, lo que le dio una popularidad que perdura hasta hoy y que en cierta medida le ha podido ‘encasillar’. “Me sigue sorprendiendo después de tantos años la gente se siga acordando, eso sí, es casi peor que no te encasillen y no sepa nadie quién eres”.

Han pasado varios años desde su aparición en esta serie y el actor madrileño tiene un currículum importante tras repetir bajo la dirección de Montxo Armendáriz –su primer película fue Silencio Roto en 2001, con la que consiguió una nominación como mejor actor revelación- y trabajar con dos de los directores más importantes del momento; Pedro Almodóvar, en Los Abrazos Rotos, e Íñigo González Iñárritu en Biutiful. “Con Almodóvar, el proceso de casting fue muy duro, pero que Pedro te dirija es todo un lujo y formar parte de esa película ha sido un sueño. Y con Iñárritu es jugar en primerísima ya que, además de ser película de gran tirón mundial, he tenido la suerte de actuar con Javier Bardem”. A Michelle se le ponen los dientes largos cuando su compañero de reparto habla sobre Almodóvar y grita de repente: “¡Pedroooo! ¡Yo quiero ser una de tus chicas!”. Esta escena se produce en un estudio del centro de Madrid donde nos hemos trasladado ya que en la montaña empezaba a nevar. La sesión está a punto de finalizar y los actores ya están cansados, estos días siguen de promoción y cada uno tiene otros asuntos profesionales; Michelle está a punto de estrenar nueva peli de Nacho Vigalondo, Extraterrestre, y Rubén se prepara para la crítica del público en su segunda obra de teatro como director, La Gaviota. Como si de una película se tratarse, Michelle pone orden en el estudio con un “¡Corten!”. Así que no nos queda más remedio, nos recogemos, la función ya ha acabado.
