I want to be on the road to success

DECIDING WHAT TO DO AFTER SCHOOL ISN’T ALWAYS EASY.

You might feel pressured to follow your mates. You might not know what you want to do next. Or know exactly where you want to be, just not sure how to get there.

At Blackpool and The Fylde College, we want you to make the right decision. Not for your friends. Not because someone else thinks you should. But because it’s right for you. And because it puts you on the road to success.

Choosing the right course is one thing (and we’ll certainly help you do that), but we also want you to be workplace ready.

That’s why we invest in equipment that’s used in industry, why we have tutors with industry expertise and why we foster relationships with local, regional and national employers who help shape our curriculum.

But it’s not just about technical skills. It’s about becoming the kind of person businesses want to employ. Because we know there’s more to work than simply being able to do the job.

We want to encourage you to develop skills like great time management, communication, teamwork and leadership so it becomes second nature when you come to make the move from education into work.

IF YOU WANT TO PROVE YOURSELF ON THE BIGGEST STAGE OF ALL, THEN BLACKPOOL AND THE FYLDE COLLEGE IS JUST THE PLACE.

If you haven’t heard about WorldSkills competitions before, you’ll be excited to learn that it is to skills what the Olympics are to sports. It’s your chance to demonstrate at a local, regional, national and, ultimately, international level that you can compete against the very best.

WorldSkills is a global movement of over 80 countries that supports young people across the world to work towards best practice in technical education.

Blackpool and The Fylde College is very proud to be a WorldSkills Centre of Excellence, an accolade which recognises the skills and expertise of our tutors and their focus on raising the quality of technical education within their individual subject areas.

We actively encourage our students to become involved in WorldSkills competitions in areas as diverse as hairdressing, engineering, digital, catering and construction. It’s a great opportunity for them to benchmark their skills against competitors from other colleges nationwide and to share knowledge and experiences with those on a similar path.

Hosting the National WorldSkills Competition

We were delighted to be one of the centres chosen to host the national WorldSkills competitions following the decision to move from its previous home at the NEC in Birmingham.

Want to be like Dylan?

Dylan studied a T Level in Carpentry and Joinery with us and loved every minute of it, although he admitted being hands on was his favourite part of the course. Coming from a highly practical family – his grandad is a painter and decorator and his dad is practical too – Dylan has always been interested in making things so he jumped at the chance to put his practical skills to the test at WorldSkills. His passion for construction clearly shone through as he went on to win the regional heat. Of his participation in WorldSkills, Dylan said: I would recommend taking part to anyone. It’s been fun travelling to another college and doing what I love. I didn’t expect to win, but it was a great end to a really good day.”

I want to have the best experience

One aspect of studying with us that really stands out is the quality of our industry placements. Because so many of our tutors come directly from industry, we really understand the value of securing genuine work experience for our students. And it’s not just about having something to put on your CV either.

It’s about seeing if the industry and the kind of career you aspire to is the right one for you.

That’s why we have a dedicated Placement Team that works to find suitable positions for all of our T level students because finding the right fit can make such a difference to your experience.

Students find it truly inspiring to see how the skills you’ve learned in the classroom can be applied in real-life scenarios, helping make sense of the more theory-based parts of your course.

WHAT OUR EMPLOYER PARTNERS SAY ABOUT B&FC:

Our learners consistently report positively on their experiences with the College and its tutors, and as a business we have an excellent working relationship.”

Student placements help to unlock new talent, can act as a recruitment pipeline and provide an extended interview experience for employers at a time when it has never been more important to encourage new talent to our sector.”

There’s no substitute for visiting the College in person which is why we recommend attending one of our school leaver Open Events to get a real flavour of what it’s like to study here.

AT B&FC, WE HAVE THREE ROUTES TO CHOOSE FROM: T LEVELS, DIPLOMAS AND APPRENTICESHIPS.

The main difference between these qualifications and A levels is the focus on a single subject area. You’ll develop wide-ranging knowledge and industry-relevant skills which will prepare you both for work and for further study.

One of the other advantages of studying here is that you can resit your maths and English GCSEs or alternative Functional Skills (if you do not achieve grade 4 or above) alongside your chosen course rather than having to repeat a year separately as you might have to do elsewhere.

We do not offer A Levels across any of our subject areas.

What do my parents need to know?

All of these routes can lead to university, higher and apprenticeshipsdegreeand employment so your parents don’t need to worry that you’re limiting your options by choosing to study at B&FC.

I want to get a head start

College shouldn’t only be about assignments, coursework and exams. It should also be about providing you with all the skills and confidence you need to flourish once you leave education and head out into the big wide world. It’s about becoming a valued member of the community and about developing the resilience to cope when life doesn’t go according to plan.

To help you achieve all this, we have a Personal and Professional Development (PPD) curriculum that runs alongside your course. There are some elements you must attend and others which are optional. The aim of all of them however, is to equip you to become the person you aspire to be.

PPD ACTIVITIES

Information on Relationships | British Values at B&FC | Sexual Health Education | Impartial Information and Guidance from the Careers Team | Anti-radicalisation Training | External Company Demonstrations | Guest Lectures | Careers Fairs | Volunteering Opportunities | Extra Curricula Trips and Residentials

I want to be more involved

It’s not all work, work, work.

We want you to have new experiences, stay active, make friends and create memories too.

That’s why we offer a range of enrichment and wellbeing activities covering everything from art and cinema to sports and gaming.

These take place across the week at lunchtimes and after College with all our in-house activities free to all our students.

Choose sports like: Basketball, Futsal, Netball, Football, Racket Sports, Gym Sessions

Choose activities like: Gaming, Arts and Crafts, Gardening, Singing, Film Club

I want my voice heard

We want you to have the best time here at B&FC which means listening to what you say, acting on what you want and delivering the best student experience we possibly can. One of the key ways we do this is by liaising with the B&FC Students’ Union.

The Union is made up of student representatives elected by you at the start of each year. Their role is to represent the student voice so if you have any concerns about issues impacting your experience here from quality and standards to social activities, your student rep is there to take these to the relevant people. Getting involved is the best way of getting your voice heard.

For more information about the students’ union visit: studentsunionblackpool.ac.uk

I want to save the planet

Issues like climate change and pollution are constantly in the news these days and we know how much young people care about these issues.

We don’t just want to pay lip service to green issues and, whilst we don’t pretend to be perfect, we are certainly prepared to put our money where our mouth is. Here are just a few examples of the changes we’ve made to be more ‘green’ and others that are in the pipeline.

+ Green modules being introduced across all relevant curriculum areas.

+ 1500 PV panels already installed capable of generating more than 300,000 kWh annually.

+ More food being sourced locally to reduce food miles.

+ Plant-based meals introduced to student and staff canteen.

+ Single-use plastics phased out.

+ Over £13 million invested in green technologies since 2013.

Introducing L&C Iot

Institutes of Technology (IoTs) were introduced by the Government as part of a national network to promote organisations offering outstanding technical education.

When the L&C IoT was established in the second phase rollout, Blackpool and The Fylde College was incredibly proud to be chosen as the lead institution for the region. As a result, certain courses we offer both at Level 3 and above have been flagged as IoT courses. What this means is that they not only offer exceptional technical training and facilities but also meet an identified skills gap in the region, indicating that employment opportunities in this sector are plentiful.

The course listings flag the IoT courses offer.

GATEWAY

I want to start again

We know that not everyone reaches the age of 16 and is ready to go on to the next level at College. That’s why we have a Gateway Campus which specialises in helping school leavers, who, for all kinds of reasons, haven’t got the qualifications they’d hoped for.

At Gateway, not only do we have specialist tutors who can support students who have found studying at school difficult, we also have a dedicated student support, wellbeing and inclusion team who can help any student who has struggled to succeed in mainstream education as a result of emotional issues, behaviour problems or poor physical health.

We offer two full-time courses and one part-time course to meet the needs of different groups of learners. Our full-time courses are designed to cater to students who need to gain the technical and personal skills necessary to progress to courses at Bispham or into work, with one of these programmes being focused on students for whom English isn’t a first language.

Want to be like Joshua and Timae?

It’s amazing what you can achieve at Gateway as two of our students, Joshua and Timae, proved.

These two students saw off tough competition to win through to the UK World Skills Finals of the Foundation Catering Competition last year. Taking part in two highly competitive preliminary rounds which saw the pair initially undertaking an online test before creating a brunch dish live online as part of a cooking

demonstration, Joshua and Timae were thrilled to discover they’d made it through to the finals.

Acknowledging the breadth of skill of their fellow competitors, World Skills praised the students’ success:

“This year the standard has been very good and you’ve done very well to get through to the finals.”

What Joshua and Timae’s story shows is that, even if things haven’t quite gone to plan at school, there’s always the possibility of success further down the line and Gateway is the ideal place to achieve it. With specialist tutors and courses designed to bridge the gap between school and further education, Gateway can really help you turn things around and set you on the path to a brighter future.

Want to be like Sophia?

Sophia is adamant that doing a T level qualification has put her ahead of the field when it comes to progressing her career. In the nursery where she is currently working before heading off to university in September, most of the staff haven’t gained a Level 3 qualification despite being older than her.

“The T level has provided me with a really firm foundation for the future. The placement gives me an advantage over students studying A levels as I’ve already experienced life in the classroom and the theoretical knowledge I’ve gained gives me the edge over people who’ve gone straight into employment. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Sophia, who sadly lost her mum at the end of her first year, really praised the support she received from the college who helped her throughout the course. She also made some fantastic friends at B&FC and thoroughly enjoyed her placement at St John’s Primary School where she had the opportunity to put into practice what she had previously learnt.

Having achieved a Distinction, Sophia is now off to study for a degree at Leeds Beckett University. Asked whether she’d recommend the qualification to others, Sophia didn’t hesitate:

The course was amazing. It’s opened so many doors for me and I think if you have a good idea of what you want to do in the future, a T level is a great choice.”

Industry-standard digital equipment. Cisco-certified instructors with up to the minute knowledge of computing developments. Fantastic job opportunities with higher-thanaverage salaries - £45,000 - and rapid progression to senior management and consultancy roles.

When T level Digital Production, Development and Design student Ameerah first started to think about what she would like to do after her GCSEs, she admits that T Levels weren’t even on her radar. But having researched them she quickly realised they offered opportunities other qualifications didn’t – like an extended work placement.

Ameerah did her placement at DWP Digital which proved to be a great choice:

“I learnt so much from the industry professionals there, especially how to apply the knowledge I had gained in the classroom to real-world situations. The experience definitely helped me in my final exams too.”

She also found her tutors at College were really supportive with individuals always on hand if she was ever struggling to understand any aspect of her course.

Having achieved a distinction, Ameerah is now waiting for confirmation of her degree apprenticeship at DWP Digital which came about as a direct result of her T level placement and hopes to go on to a career in software engineering.

Alyssa had to travel nearly halfway round the world to find a course that could take her one step closer to her dream career. Originally from America, Alyssa was thrilled when she discovered her local college offered a beauty course that focused on media and special effects makeup. In fact, she enrolled just three weeks after landing in the UK.

Full of praise for the course itself and particularly for the breadth of skills students learn, Alyssa was also highly complimentary about her course tutor whom she described as nurturing, inspirational and incredibly patient.

Asked whether she would recommend the course to others, Alyssa was very positive. She felt the course prepared people particularly well for industry, especially given the wide variety of effects makeup artists are asked to produce from photographic makeup to ‘creepy, out of this world stuff’. She also enjoyed the guest lectures and demonstrations from industry professionals and the opportunity this provided to network with them.

Well-resourced onsite training facilities to allow students to apply techniques and skills acquired in the classroom in a practical context. Courses are a perfect stepping stone, bridging the gap between school and entry into key worker professions.

A T level in Health was the natural choice for Grace who aspires to a career in adult nursing, following in the footsteps of other family members who have a history of working in the healthcare industry. Grace’s reason for deciding to do a T level was twofold; it allowed her to focus on one subject area and also gave her the opportunity to experience life working on the wards of a busy NHS hospital and at Clifton Homecare, a local company providing personal care in the community.

“I think it’s really beneficial to do the 315-hour work placement because it gives you a genuine sense of what working in the health sector will actually be like. I’ve always loved hospital dramas on TV and obviously heard quite a bit about it from my family, but getting to do it for real was so much better. And it confirmed that I’ve made the right career choice too.”

Getting an unheard of full marks in one of her exams and achieving a Distinction overall, Grace is off to the University of Sheffield to start her degree in adult nursing in September and we’re sure she’ll shine as brightly as Florence Nightingale’s lamp.

Want to be like Olivia?

Having studied her Level 3 diploma in Travel and Tourism at B&FC, Olivia used the experience she had gained on the course to make what turned out to be a successful application for a position with an international airline.

She now flies all over the world with them as cabin crew catering to the passengers in their First Class service. Focusing on this for the time being, Olivia ultimately has her sights set on becoming an inflight lead or manager in the future.

Asked what advice she would give students thinking about studying a travel and tourism course at B&FC, Olivia explained how important it was to make every moment of the course count. The industry overview the course provided definitely shaped the career path she ultimately chose whilst the wealth of experience and knowledge she acquired really helped her to secure and make a success of her first job.

The course gave her confidence too:

One of my favourite memories is when we went on a residential trip to Liverpool. We had to do a guided tour around the famous sites so there wasn’t any possibility of shying away from the limelight doing that.”
