Blackpool and The Fylde College is very proud to be a WorldSkills Centre of Excellence, an accolade which recognises the skills and expertise of our tutors and their focus on raising the quality of technical education within their individual subject areas.
We actively encourage our students to become involved in WorldSkills competitions in areas as diverse as hairdressing, engineering, digital, catering and construction. It’s a great opportunity for them to benchmark their skills against competitors from other colleges nationwide and to share knowledge and experiences with those on a similar path.
Hosting the National WorldSkills Competition in 2022
We were delighted to be one of the centres chosen to host the national WorldSkills competitions following the decision to move from its previous home at the NEC in Birmingham.
Given our present economic challenges, including the need for innovation and improved productivity, the quality of our technical skills is going be a key factor in shaping the future of the UK. WorldSkills is like an accelerant in the skills system, because it creates an intensity around skills development, which drives up standards to the level industry needs. At B&FC we are fully integrating it into our curriculum, so that our employers, tutors and students all reap the benefits, and we hope to see more young people from Blackpool and the Fylde Coast in national and international competitions in the future.”
Want to be like Dylan?
Dylan is currently studying a T Level in Carpentry and Joinery with us and loving every minute of it, although he admits being hands on is his favourite part of the course. Coming from a highly practical family – his granddad is a painter and decorator and his dad is practical too – Dylan has always been interested in making things so he jumped at the chance to put his practical skills to the test at WorldSkills. His passion for construction clearly shone through as he went on to win the regional heat which means he goes forward to the national competition next. Of his participation in WorldSkills, Dylan said:
I would recommend taking part to anyone. It’s been fun travelling to another college and doing what I love. I didn’t expect to win, but it was a great end to a really good day.”

There’s no substitute for visiting the College in person which is why we recommend attending one of our school leaver Open Events or taster sessions (which are arranged through schools) to get a real flavour of what it’s like to study here.

AT B&FC, WE HAVE THREE ROUTES TO CHOOSE FROM: T LEVELS, DIPLOMAS AND APPRENTICESHIPS.
The main difference between these qualifications and A Levels is the focus on a single subject area. You’ll develop wide-ranging knowledge and industry-relevant skills which will prepare you both for work and for further study.
One of the other advantages of studying here is that you will resit your maths and English GCSEs or alternative Functional Skills (if you do not achieve grade 4 or above ) alongside your chosen course rather than having to repeat a year separately as you might have to do elsewhere.
We do not offer A Levels across any of our subject areas.
What do my parents need to know?
Sometimes parents think that A Levels are the only route into higher education; that you can’t secure a place at university unless you have them. Whilst that might have been true once upon a time, things radically different now.

The government is putting a real emphasis on professional and technical education and encouraging everyone to develop work-based skills that can support the economy.
That’s why courses which combine genuine industry experience with academic study are becoming increasingly popular. It’s also why more people are choosing qualifications like degree apprenticeships over traditional degrees. You still graduate with a degree-level qualification, but with oodles of work experience, three years’ salary and, even better, no student debt.
At B&FC, we’re experts at delivering employer-focused courses and have industry-standard facilities on site which support the development of industry-ready knowledge and skills.

T Levels are a new twoyear qualification that can lead to university, skilled employment or higher/degree apprenticeships. They’ve been designed with employers and businesses to provide the skills that industry needs, which means you get to play a key part in shaping the future of the UK economy.

If you like the sound of fewer exams, a chance to gain industry experience and achieve a qualification that’s equally valued by employers and universities, a Diploma could be the right choice for you.
There are three types of diploma available. Which one is right for you will depend on what GCSE results you achieve.
Level 3 Triple Diplomas take two years to complete, are equivalent to 3 A Levels and carry the same UCAS points. They also provide a real depth of knowledge in a particular subject area.
Level 3 Diplomas are equivalent to 2 A Levels and provide employment-focused skills and knowledge, allowing you to progress into employment or higher-level study.
Level 2 Diplomas only last one year and allow you to build up a strong foundation of knowledge in your subject area of choice. Pass a Level 2 Diploma successfully and you are on course to follow up with a Level 3 qualification.

APPRENTICESHIPS
I want the best of both worlds
Want to earn and learn at the same time? Then an apprenticeship could be for you.
First, you will need to find an employer willing to offer you a place on an apprenticeship. You can check out current vacancies on our website and speak to our Apprenticeship Team who can help you to find a suitable match.
Once on your apprenticeship, you’ll spend 80% of your time at work and 20% in off-the-job training.
You will receive a personalised training plan together with your own personal skills coach.
Taking about 18 months to complete, you will be assessed by a combination of work observations, tests and a portfolio of evidence you will need to compile during your apprenticeship programme.
Afterwards, you might want to consider doing a higher or degree apprenticeship which will take your skills and knowledge to the next level.

Whilst we obviously don’t underestimate the importance of academic success, college shouldn’t only be about assignments, coursework and exams. It should also be about providing you with all the skills necessary to successfully negotiate the transition between education and work and to give you the confidence you need to flourish in everyday life.
PPD ACTIVITIES
It’s about helping you become a valued member of the community, about developing the resilience you need to cope when life doesn’t go according to plan and about becoming the person you want to be.
To help you achieve all this, you’ll be encouraged to attend a wide range of activities and workshops beyond the scope of your chosen course.

Some of this year’s T Level business students spent their extended placement at the Department of Work and Pensions right here in Blackpool and had an absolutely fantastic time contributing to the work of the service.
We had the pleasure of dropping in on a final celebratory day with them and hearing from the DWP staff who’d supported them. Cycling through a number of different departments gave the group the opportunity to sample work in a wide variety of business functions and it was clear from the praise they received that all of them made a positive impact on the business. Excitingly, they even got to present at the highest level at a national DWP conference which coincided with their placement.

Tia has just completed her T Level in Primary Teaching at B&FC and was delighted to find out that she had achieved a Distinction (equivalent to 3 As at A Level) when the final results came out. This was especially pleasing for Tia who had studied the first year of her course elsewhere and nearly failed.
At B&FC, however, she found the tutors truly inspirational and particularly enjoyed her T Level placement at a local school where she was able to put so much of what she’d learnt into practice and also acquire numerous practical skills from the teachers there.
Tia is now off to study a degree in primary education at Leeds Beckett University with a place guaranteed by her T Level success. Asked whether she’d recommend the qualification to others, Tia didn’t hesitate:

Studying a T Level in Design, Surveying and Planning, Fraser and Jason both had the opportunity to undertake their 45-day work placement with Create Homes, a residential construction company with developments across the North West. Giving them the chance to put their college-based learning to the test, Fraser and Jason were actively involved in all aspects of house building with the company, including understanding design, engineering and planning, surveying, health and safety, quality inspections, and problem-solving. Moreover, they gain practical knowledge of home construction and the associated trades.

Having always had a passion for art and design, Holly started her journey at B&FC studying the Level 3 foundation course in Art and Design before progressing to the full degree programme. Whilst there, she has the opportunity to spend a month volunteering at the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the world’s most prestigious art event. At the same time, she started work experience at the Grundy Art Gallery in Blackpool. The combination of the two made Holly realise that a career in gallery work was what she aspired to do.
Having successfully completed her course with us, Holly then went on to study an MA in Art Gallery and Museum Studies at The University of Manchester before landing a role as the Learning and Engagement Officer at the Grundy Art Gallery where she has since partnered on projects with TATE and News Contemporaries. She’s also had the opportunity to revisit her experience at the Biennale, assisting with the co-curation of SHAPE Arts Pavilion at this year’s festival.

Want to be like Isabel?
A trip to Blackpool when she was younger sparked Isabel’s interest in all things mechanical. Travelling on one of Blackpool’s heritage trams, she was inspired to look into engineering as a possible career choice and since then she hasn’t looked back.
When we met her, Isabel was busy fabricating a metal guard in a workshop filled with heavy-duty industrial machinery none of which seemed to phase her. Asked about her favourite activity in engineering, Isabel didn’t hesitate to tell us how much she enjoyed welding!
She might have been the only girl in the group, but she certainly wasn’t on the sidelines looking in and it was clear that the thought of working in a male-dominated industry didn’t bother her at all.
Still fascinated by heritage vehicles, Isabel makes an annual pilgrimage to Tram Sunday, a festival which celebrates historic transport and is held just up the road in Fleetwood. Asked what her dream job would be, Isabel said she would jump at the chance to work restoring or maintaining these machines from a bygone age.

Alyssa had to travel nearly halfway round the world to find a course that could take her one step closer to her dream career. Originally from America, Alyssa was thrilled when she discovered her local college offered a beauty course that focused on media and special effects makeup. In fact, she enrolled just three weeks after landing in the UK.
Full of praise for the course itself and particularly for the breadth of skills students learn, Alyssa was also highly complimentary about her course tutor whom she described as nurturing, inspirational and incredibly patient.
Asked whether she would recommend the course to others, Alyssa was very positive. She felt the course prepared people particularly well for industry, especially given the wide variety of effects makeup artists are asked to produce from photographic makeup to ‘creepy, out of this world stuff’. Aspiring to work in adult nursing, Thomas realised he need to improve his maths and English which is why he signed up initially to do the T Level Foundation Course which allowed him to retake his exams. With these subjects embedded in the curriculum, Thomas found it easier to acquire the knowledge necessary to achieve the grades he needed to progress onto the T Level programme.
Thomas opted for a T Level both for its mix of hands-on learning and exam-oriented structure which suited his preferred learning style and because the health-focused curriculum was highly relevant to nursing in hospital settings.
Thomas gained invaluable experience through a local care work placement, where he assisted patients under the guidance of experienced professionals. From basic caregiving tasks to effective communication strategies, Thomas honed essential skills for his future career. Dreams of being on a Netflix show or having the chance to become a backing dancer on tour with an international artist are what have motivated Ryan to pursue his love of performing arts.
Having completed his Level 3 Diploma with us this year, Ryan has just enrolled on our brand new Immersive Performance Practice HNC, a degreelevel qualification which offers students like Ryan the chance to learn at the cutting edge of performance technology.
Asked why he decided to stay at B&FC, Ryan was quick to point out the advantages here of smaller class sizes, the familiarity of the campus and the fantastic support he’s received from industry-specialist tutors, including weekly one-to-one feedback sessions.
Ryan also drew attention to the fantastic onsite facilities for performing arts students at the College which include dedicated rehearsal spaces, a dance studio, a working theatre which is open to the public and a state-of-theart immersive pod, which he’s looking forward to working in more extensively in the coming months.

Having had an interest in joining the police or the armed forces for some time, coming to do this course at College was always going to be the logical first step for Chloe, who is currently on our Level 3 programme.
With her sights set on becoming one of the very few women who have succeeded in passing the rigorous tests required to join the Parachute Regiment, Chloe is working exceptional hard not only to get the best grades but also to maintain the level of fitness needed to achieve her goals. She talks positively about the discipline the tutors try to instil in all the students on her course.
As well as praising the College’s facilities, Chloe has also been really impressed by the expertise of her tutors. With backgrounds both in the army, navy and police force, Chloe feels she and her classmates have really benefitted from the insight they have all been able to provide into what working in the various organisations is really like.

Want to be like Jack?
Following two years studying for a Level 3 diploma in Animal Science at B&FC, Jack has just secured a highly coveted place to study Veterinary Medicine and Surgery at UCLan. On track to get a Distinction for his course, Jack was delighted to get on to the UCLan programme as veterinary medicine is known to be extremely competitive. It also proved that it isn’t necessary to go down the traditional A Level route to progress onto popular university courses which certainly wouldn’t have been right for Jack.
“I like the fact that this programme focused on coursework as I felt that I could really demonstrate my skills and knowledge. I’m not strong in exams but that doesn’t mean I’m any less able.”
Jack also liked the smaller class sizes here and the support he got from his tutors. They arranged mock interviews for his university place which gave him confidence when it came to the real thing and always supported him to hit the grades he needed to succeed.
The standard of teaching has been exceptional and the tutors have got me to the point where I know the grades I need are genuinely achievable. The goal of coming on this course was to get into vet school so I’m thrilled that I’m just one step away from that becoming a reality.”

Following in his brother’s footsteps, Trayden dreams of pursuing a career as a professional cyclist with hopes of racing abroad in the not too distant future.
Of course, even if he succeeds, Trayden knows that he will only be able to compete as an elite athlete for a limited time which is why he is also lining up a career as a personal trainer - something else he’s passionate about.
Trayden chose B&FC for several reasons. Apart from being local to him, he’s found the tutors really supportive and has been impressed by the sports facilities on site. As well as an indoor sport centre and a fullequipped gym, the College also has several all-weather outdoor pitches, all of which means that a wide variety of sports can be played.
Away from the technical aspects of his course, Trayden has found the people management skills he has learnt particularly helpful especially with a view to how he will interact with his personal training clients in the future.

The Lancashire visitor economy contributes over £3.5 billion per year to the region making it a buoyant market for the sector. Opportunities to work overseas, travel and interact with the public are all key aspects of various roles within the industry. There are nearly 10,000 regional roles in the travel and tourism sector with more than 1200 openings annually.
Want to be like Olivia?
Having studied her Level 3 diploma in Travel and Tourism at B&FC, Olivia used the experience she had gained on the course to make what turned out to be a successful application for a position with an international airline.
She now flies all over the world with them as cabin crew catering to the passengers in their First Class service. Focusing on this for the time being, Olivia ultimately has her sights set on becoming an inflight lead or manager in the future.
Asked what advice she would give students thinking about study a travel and tourism course at B&FC, Olivia explained how important it was to make every moment of the course count. The industry overview the course provided definitely shaped the career path she ultimately chose whilst the wealth of experience and knowledge she acquired really help her to secure and make a success of her first job.
The course gave her confidence too:
One of my favourite memories is when we went on a residential trip to Liverpool. We had to do a guided tour around the famous sites so there wasn’t any possibility of shying away from the limelight doing that.”
I want to start again
We know that not everyone reaches the age of 16 and is ready to go on to the next level at College. That’s why we have a Gateway Campus which specialises in helping school leavers, who, for all kinds of reasons, haven’t got the qualifications they’d hoped for.
At Gateway, not only do we have specialist tutors who can support students who have found studying at school difficult, we also have a dedicated student support, wellbeing and inclusion team who can help any student who has struggled to succeed in mainstream education as a result of emotional issues, behaviour problems or poor physical health.
We offer two full-time courses and one part-time course to meet the needs of different groups of learners. Our full-time courses are designed to catered to students who need to gain the technical and personal skills necessary to progress to courses at Bispham or into work, with one of these programmes being focused on students for whom English isn’t a first language.

It’s amazing what you can achieve at Gateway as two of our students, Joshua and Timae, have just proved. These two students recently saw off tough competition to win through to the UK World Skills Finals of the Foundation Catering Competition.
Taking part in two highly competitive preliminary rounds which saw the pair initially
undertaking an online test before creating a brunch dish live online as part of a cooking demonstration, Joshua and Timae were thrilled to discover they’d made it through to the finals which take place in November this year.
Acknowledging the breadth of skill of their fellow competitors, World Skills praised the students’ success:
This year the standard has been very good and you’ve done very well to get through to the finals.”
