B-THRIFTY GIVES BACK

By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D.

Christmas is the Season of Giving. Regardless of religious affiliation, individuals across the country are focused on giving. Whether buying gifts for loved ones, dropping coins in a red kettle, or making donations to charitable causes for a yearend tax deduction, we are thinking of giving. It’s a good thing! B-Thrifty believes in the biblical statement, “It is better to give than to receive.” It is our intention to practice giving all year-round, and 2012 has afforded us many opportunities to exercise that virtue. Even though our philosophy is based on “thrift” and “economic gain,” we know that the giver is generally the greater receiver in the long run. Our program of “Free Clothes for Kids” is an example of the spirit of giving that B-Thrifty wants to promote. Other examples include needed merchandise that has been provided free to homeless veterans, to homeless shelters, and to individuals and families who have been re-

ferred to us by our non-profit and church partners. Some of the most significant gifts are not merchandise or money. Gifts of time, energy, and talent-sharing are more likely to have a higher value to the receiver than “things.” B-Thrifty has made serious attempts during 2012 to share those more personal gifts with organizations whose missions are to help individuals and families in need. On many occasions during the year, volunteers from B-Thrifty, sporting yellow t-shirts with the buzzing bee logo, could be seen helping collect food for the hungry, playing with children who had recently experienced loss, or some other service oriented activity. Two of the organizations allowing BThrifty to give and receive are the Occoquan district of the organization of the Boy Scouts and The Salvation Army in Prince William County. By sharing time, energy, and talent over innumerable hours during the past year, Alonso Zamora, founding partner with B-Thrifty, has forged rela-

tionships with these two highly respected organizations that benefiting B-Thrifty for years to come. Alas, the paradox again: giving is the precursor of receiving. B-Thrifty is grateful for several organizations who have allowed us to both give and receive: A wider Circle, Joseph’s Coat, Providence Church, Antioch Christian Church, Grace Baptist Church, HUG, Marymount University, CrossLink, NAPO, Holiness Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, Veteran Affairs Health Care Organization, Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, Old Bridge United Methodist Church, First Baptist of Woodbridge, ACTS, United Christian Fellowship International, Bethany House, DC United Drive, Good Will, Arlington County Job Fair, and The Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Seasons of Hope, Capital Food Bank, Potomac Crest Baptist Church, Rotary Club, and Boys and Girls Club of Prince William County.

By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D.

A wider Circle, Joseph’s Coat, Providence Church, Antioch Christian Church, Grace Baptist Church, HUG, Marymount University, CrossLink, NAPO, Holiness Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, Veteran Affairs Health Care Organization, Boy Scouts, Salvation Army, Old Bridge United Methodist Church, First Baptist of Woodbridge, ACTS, United Christian Fellowship International, Bethany House, DC United Drive, Good Will, Arlington County Job Fair, and The Greater Washington Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Seasons of Hope, Capital Food Bank, Potomac Crest Baptist Church, Rotary Club, and Boys and Girls Club of Prince William County.

SALVATION ARMY AND B-THRIFTY Partners in Helping Others

One of the defining moments for BThrifty occurred about this time last year. The Salvation Army Corps of Prince William County stepped up with military strength and supported B-Thrifty in their initiative to help the flood victims of Holly Acres. They provided food and other necessities for the dozens of families who were displaced. Captains George and Robin Hackbarth led their team in helping with logistics and planning, as well as providing money to host the highly successful Thanksgiving dinner for 300-plus individuals from that community. Another event where The Salva-

tion Army and B-Thrifty join hands will occur on Sunday afternoon, November 18, from 3-5 PM. A Thanksgiving Carnival for families living with loss will be hosted by The Salvation Army to benefit The Seasons of Hope. The mission of Seasons of Hope is to provide counseling and community education around grief, loss, and transition. Families or individuals who have experienced loss are invited to participate in this afternoon event. (contact info@seasonsofhope.org or 703-580-8995 to RSVP or for more information). Julie Weatherington, who is on the advisory board of The Prince Wil-

liam Corps of The Salvation Army, is executive director of Seasons of Hope. B-Thrifty will provide volunteers to help with the logistics of the carnival. The current crisis in New Jersey and New York City has not escaped the attention of The Salvation Army and B-Thrifty. During the months of November and December, a percentage of all sales at B-Thrifty will be given to the Prince William Corps of The Salvation Army. This money will be used to help with the relief efforts resulting from hurricane Sandy. In order to tally this percentage, shoppers are remind-

ed to place their sales receipts in the boxes adjacent to the check-out registers. B-Thrifty is exceptionally proud of its affiliation with The Salvation Army. Alonso Zamora, founding partner of B-Thrifty (who also serves on the advisory board of Prince William Corps of The Salvation Army), has said, “We at B-Thrifty consider it an honor to walk beside the dedicated men and women of The Salvation Army who have been providing hope, help, and healing for hurting individuals for more than 140 years.

Old Bridge Joins Salvation Army, Capital Area Food Bank to Help Feed Those in Need By Joanne McDaniel, Old Bridge United Methodist Church A few months ago, Salvation Army Captain George Hackbarth approached Old Bridge United Methodist Church Pastor Robinson about helping with a local area food give-away. “The Capital Area Food Bank had food to give away but we didn’t have the space to set it up,” Hackbarth said. In addition to needing a location, help was required to distribute the food. As the saying goes, the rest is history. On September 27th, Old Bridge teamed up with The Salvation Army and the Capital Area Food Bank to start providing fresh fruit and vegetables to those in need in our community and will continue to provide this service on the fourth Thursday of every month. The success of this much-needed and worthwhile service is evident in the numbers of people being helped. “Approximately 80 families were served the first month and last month we provided food to 176 individuals who fed over 800 family members.” Hackbarth said. “We’re helping to make a difference in the lives of families where money is running out long before the month does” Pastor Robinson said. “Most of the folks we’re helping do not go to our church but we certainly encourage our members and our friends who need help with their groceries to come by as well.” Information about the food drop is distributed through The Salvation Army, local area shelters, the local Bthrifty shop and word of mouth. “I heard about the free fruit and

vegetables from a member of your church and I shared the information with my neighbors who also needed help,” said one woman waiting in line. Individuals line up between noon and 2 p.m. at the back of the church parking lot and the food is handed out by Old Bridge volunteers. Catie Murphy coordinates the logistics at Old Bridge. “The Food Bank truck arrives around 11 a.m. and church volunteers help unload whatever food is being provided – we never know what we’re going to get. The first month we handed out apples, oranges, potatoes and onions. Last month we had cabbage, potatoes, carrots and baked goods – more than 7,670 pounds of food. The Salvation Army was also able to provide over 100 coats.” There are no requirements to receive the food but Cynthia Ramirez, a member at Old Bridge, helps collect demographic data, asking for the total members in each person’s household and whether any of them are veterans. The information helps gauge the amount of food needed each month and aids grant applications.

sary. I’m able to answer their questions about other programs in the area. We bring toys out from the church so their children can be entertained while waiting in line. They share their excitement about the soup they made with the cabbage we gave them last month and tell me I have no idea what a difference the food they’re receiving is making in their lives each month.” As much as the monthly food distribution makes a difference for its recipients, it also offers the chance to spread the word about other programs and services. The “turkey team” at Old Bridge was quick to bring out sign-up sheets for the annual Old Bridge Church Thanksgiving Dinner – eager to make sure that everyone had the opportunity to eat and share in fellowship on Thanksgiving Day. “It’s my understanding that more than 200 people from the food drop signed up to join us for dinner on Thanksgiving Day,” says Catie. Dr. Saleh, a local area orthodontist, provided dental care kits for the last food give-away after he heard about it from Erin Prendergast, a member of Old Bridge who works for Dr. Saleh.

“Cynthia is the MVP of this operation,” Murphy says. “A large part of the population receiving food from us is Hispanic and Cynthia’s ability to communicate with them in their native language has been invaluable. She works the line with a passion, answering their questions and putting them at ease.”

Alonso Zamora, founder of B-thrifty and a member of the Salvation Army Advisory Board, provided stacks of $5coupons at the last food give-away and recently offered the inside of his facility to Old Bridge for the distribution of food through March so volunteers as well as recipients don’t have to stand out in harsh winter weather.

“I think it’s important that the folks coming to us feel welcome and they feel more welcome when someone can interact with them personally” Ramirez said. “They’ll start to pull out their ID and I tell them it’s not neces-

“Representatives from St. Mark’s UMC and St. Thomas UMC were here at the last food give-away to see what we were doing and how it works,” said Pastor Robinson.

Folks waiting in line at the most re-

cent food distribution were anxious to share their gratitude for the food they received and for the help provided by the people of Old Bridge and the Salvation Army. An older woman said she quit her job when her daughter became sick and ultimately disabled. “She’s no longer able to take care of her 4 year old daughter and so I’m taking care of both my daughter and my granddaughter.” A young couple with a newborn baby was overwhelmed when, after receiving food for the first time, they found out that they would be able to get food again the following month. The father walked away with tears in his eyes. “There are seven people in my family and the food I receive here helps us save money we don’t have,” said Nikki, a young mother. “It’s been an amazing help and it makes me both happy and sad to come here – happy because of the help that’s being given to me and my family but sad to see that so many people need it.” Old Bridge will continue to work with Salvation Army and Capital Area Food Bank, giving away fresh produce, the fourth Thursday of each month.
