Learning to Better Serve Those Who Have Served B-THRIFTY participates in Federal program for Veterans By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D. While it may difficult to imagine, it is true: there are men and women who have fought to protect our country living in the woods in Prince William County. Some have combat experience dating back to the Vietnam War, while others have served in the more recent Iraq and Afghanistan wars. The HUD-Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (HUD-VASH) attempts to locate these homeless veterans and provides services through case management and clinical services. The local case manager serving Prince William County is April Ballard, LCSW. Through connection with

April, B-Thrifty has found a way to make a small contribution to improving the quality of life for some of these individuals. Several homeless veterans have come to B-Thrifty with letters of referrals from the case manager to receive items of furniture and clothes free of charge. As they improve their physical and mental health through the clinical services provided by the Veterans Affairs program, we are pleased that B-Thrifty can assist in improving their physical comfort. One of the B-Thrifty founders, Alonso Zamora, was making a presentation to an inter-denominational

church group last month and proceeded to share the story of one veteran who was provided free clothes and shoes at B-Thrifty so that he could apply for a job. A gentleman from the back of the room quietly moved forward and said, “that was me!” He had found a custodial job at the host church. While we are working on improving the procedure for providing basic items to these veterans, B-Thrifty is proud to have a small part in this Federal Government Program to help those who have helped keep our country safe.

A Prince William County thrift store is giving local families a big break on their back-to-school shopping bills. Alonso Zamora, part owner of B-thrifty in Woodbridge, sees a lot of families coming through his doors who are barely making ends meet. So he came up with a way to help. On Tuesdays kids can get three outfits free of charge. Customer Christine Smith said, “Most of these are going to be provided free to me, and it’s just amazing.” Smith never imagined she’d take her granddaughter shopping without shrinking her wallet. The “Clothes for Kids” drive is a blessing for her bank account. “My husband is on worker’s compensation. My children are having problems with their finances even though they both have full-time jobs. They’re both running low on money,” Smith said.

Zamora added, “It’s a tough economy right now.” Zamora and his partners opened the store about a year ago and decided he had to do more to help his cash-strapped neighbors. “It’s been because of my background. Being from Chile... I know how difficult things are. We used to get hand-me-downs or second-hand clothing. It’s just natural. We’ve always given back as a community,” Zamora explained. Bthrifty allows its customers of every income to fill their carts with free clothing twice a year. Customer April Greene said, “It does good for me because I have four children, and I’m a single mom...” A big savings, especially during an expensive time of the year. The National Retail Federation reports the average parent

with children in grades K-12 will spend nearly $700 on back-toschool shopping. The “Clothes for Kids” drive runs year-round on Tuesdays for children 8 and under. During back-to-school season, children up to 8-years-old can get free clothing. B-thrifty says the drive wouldn’t be possible without donations.

B-thrifty presenta el programa de ropa gratis para los niños las vidas de los menos afortunados en el área.

Desde su primer día el 20 de agosto de 2011, B-Thrifty ha demostrado su interés genuino en el bienestar de las comunidades vecinas. Obama’s New Relief for DREAMers – Are You Eligible? Nueva Ley de DREAMer’s del Presidente Obama. Es Usted elegible?

JW Law, P.C. - Attorney Joe W. Nesari - www.ushvisa.com • 1110-D Elden Street, Suite 107, Herndon, VA 20170

Obama’s New Relief for DREAMers – Are You Eligible? President Obama’s new order for deferred action stops the unjust deportation of hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who came to America as children. If you qualify for deffered action, you can obtain work authorization. However, the deferred action is not a legal status or a green card, and it must be renewed every 2 years. The application process for eligible individuals will be finalized by August 14, 2012. The application form will become available on August 15, 2012. There is no deadline to apply, but if you apply and your application is denied, you will get no second chance to appeal the decision or to apply again. That is why you must make sure that your application is supported by the best evidence proving that you are eligible. Consult with a licensed immigration attorney.

To be eligible, you must (1) be born after June 15, 1981; (2) have entered the US before age 16;

These are only the basic requirements. However, even if you can satisfy all of these requirements, proving your eligibility can be complex. A lawyer can help you to gather the right evidence that proves that you have lived in America in each and every single month since June 15, 2007 along with other requirements. Also, if you have ever been arrested, or if you have traveled outside the U.S. since June 15, 2007, it is important that an experienced lawyer reviews your situation and makes the best case to the USCIS. Remember, if your application is denied, you will not have a second chance. Even a lawyer will not be able to appeal the denial at that point. Experienced immigration attorney, Joe Nesari, can be reached at 703-796-0801.

MANASSAS CITY to BEGIN “RAKE ‘EM to the CURB” LEAF PROGRAM | Manassas Utilities and Public Works Dept. Collects 1,400,000 Pounds of Leaves Each of the 12 sections in Manassas is vacuumed four times to remove all extra leaves. A leaf collection schedule is available in the September issue of the Manassas Public Works newsletter mailed in the City of Manassas’ resident utility bills. The City of Manassas takes leaves to a local farm which uses leaves to improve soil quality or to Prince William County’s Composting Facility on Balls Ford Road in Manassas, Va.

For more than 20 years, the City of Manassas Utilities and Public Works department has offered the “Rake ‘Em to the Curb” leafcollecting program, vacuuming up more than 1, 400,000 pounds of leaves each fall season, from October through January. For a leaf collection schedule and a map, go to www.manassascity.org or call 703-257-8378.

“Our leaf collection program is very popular with the community and we encourage our customers to utilize the earth-friendly options to dispose of leaves--whether it’s raking leaves for collection, creating a compost pile or using shredded leaves as mulch for plants,” said Mike Moon, director of public works and utilities for the City of Manassas.

There are other useful ways to use leaves. Create a compost pile or use a mulching lawnmower to make mulch to protect plant beds from winter weather. Or instead of raking, rent a leaf blower to blow leaves into piles and place them in a specific “natural” area in the yard. A key to using leaves for mulch is to cut them up into smaller pieces, especially large leaves. They decay much sooner and allow for water to soak in rather than run off. The City of Manassas, Va., is an

independent, full service city of 10-square miles in Northern Virginia. The City is rich in history and the Manassas Junction of railroads played a pivotal role in the American Civil War. The City has a population of 35,821, owns its own public utilities, has the busiest general aviation airport in Virginia and is part of the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. Manassas has been recognized by the Virginia Municipal League and other national and state organizations for its highly successful neighborhood improvement programs and by the Government Finance Officers Association for excellence in financial reporting and budgeting.
