Partners in Helping Others By H. Dale Keeton, Ph.D. One of the defining moments for BThrifty occurred about this time last year. The Salvation Army Corps of Prince William County stepped up with military strength and supported B-Thrifty in their initiative to help the flood victims of Holly Acres. They provided food and other necessities for the dozens of families who were displaced. Captains George and Robin Hackbarth led their team in helping with logistics and planning, as well as providing money to host the highly successful Thanksgiving dinner for 300-plus individuals from that community. Another event where The Salvation Army and B-Thrifty join hands will occur on Sunday afternoon, November 18, from 3-5 PM. A Thanksgiving Carnival
for families living with loss will be hosted by The Salvation Army to benefit The Seasons of Hope. The mission of Seasons of Hope is to provide counseling and community education around grief, loss, and transition. Families or individuals who have experienced loss are invited to participate in this afternoon event. (contact info@seasonsofhope.org or 703-580-8995 to RSVP or for more information). Julie Weatherington, who is on the advisory board of The Prince William Corps of The Salvation Army, is executive director of Seasons of Hope. B-Thrifty will provide volunteers to help with the logistics of the carnival. The current crisis in New Jersey and New York City has not escaped the attention of The Salvation Army and B-Thrifty. During the months of November and December, 10%
of all sales at B-Thrifty will be given to the Prince William Corps of The Salvation Army. This money will be used to help with the relief efforts resulting from hurricane Sandy. In order to tally this percentage, shoppers are reminded to place their sales receipts in the boxes adjacent to the check-out registers. B-Thrifty is exceptionally proud of its affiliation with The Salvation Army. Alonso Zamora, founding partner of BThrifty (who also serves on the advisory board of Prince William Corps of The Salvation Army), has said, “We at BThrifty consider it an honor to walk beside the dedicated men and women of The Salvation Army who have been providing hope, help, and healing for hurting individuals for more than 140 years.”

Forty Percent of Home Fire Deaths – No Smoke Alarms Present Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery

According to U.S. Fire Administration (USFA), each year in the U.S., approximately 3,500 people die and 18,300 sustain injuries from fires. In 2005 - 2009, approximately 66% of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. By 2010, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), 96% of U.S. households have at least one smoke alarm; yet, the number of home fire deaths is still alarming. In 40% of the reported home fire deaths, no smoke alarms were present and of the U.S. homes with smoke alarms, 25% of the home fire deaths were the result of the alarm failing to sound. When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually the result of missing, disconnected or dead batteries. According to NFPA, households with smoke alarms that do not work substantially outnumber households with no alarms. Although these deadly fires often occur late at night and early morning when individuals are sleeping, one vital step in saving lives is installing smoke alarms. When properly installed and maintained, smoke alarms save lives and protect against injury and loss due to fire. You double your chances of surviving a home fire with working smoke alarms compared to homes without working smoke alarms. To keep you and your family safe follow these life-saving smoke alarm tips: • Place a smoke alarm on every level of your home including the basement and inside and outside sleeping areas. • Check smoke alarms monthly by pushing the test button. If you cannot reach the button easily, use a broom handle. • Change the batteries in your alarms at least once a year or each time you change your clock. (spring forward, fall back). • Do not remove the batteries from your smoke alarms to put in other appliances.
• The life span of a smoke alarm is 8-10 years and the entire alarm should be replaced during this time (consider installing a ten-year lithium battery-powered smoke alarm, which is sealed so it cannot be tampered with or opened). • Hard-wired smoke alarms with battery back-ups need to be tested monthly and batteries replaced yearly. • Keep smoke alarms clean. Vacuum or dust your smoke alarms according to manufacturer’s directions to keep them working properly. • Teach children what the smoke alarm sounds like and what to do in the event it sounds. Smoke alarms can often sound while cooking or taking a shower that emits large amounts of steam. If a smoke alarm sounds during these types of activities, do not remove or disable the battery; creating a minor fix can lead to a deadly mistake. Instead you should: • Open a window or door and press the “hush” button, • Wave a towel at the alarm to clear the air, or • Move the entire alarm several feet away from the location. Smoke Alarms for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing According to Gallaudet Research Institute, a 1990 and 1991 survey conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services states that over 20 million people (8.6 % of the population in the U.S.), suffer from some degree of deafness and of those people, approximately 421,000 are completely deaf. Traditional audible smoke alarms that alert individuals about fire, is not a viable option for this particular population, but they can rely on vibrating alarms or visual alarms equipped with flashing strobe lights. It is vital that this audience is aware of the availability of these types of smoke alarm devices as well as the importance of a proper escape plan. Carbon Monoxide Incidents on the Rise | Don’t Become a Victim of CO Poisoning
As the weather becomes colder, families preoccupy their time with a variety of indoor activities which often take place in the comfort of their home. As the amount of time spent at home increases so does the use of heating and cooking equipment and fuels such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil and methane; all potential sources of carbon monoxide, an invisible, odorless, and colorless gas created when fuels burn incomplete; often referred to as the silent killer. Vehicles and generators can also produce dangerous levels of carbon monoxide when operating in an enclosed area such as an attached garage. A person can be poisoned by a small amount of CO over a longer period of time or by a large amount of CO over a shorter amount of time. In 2010, U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 80,100 non-fire CO incidents in which carbon monoxide was found; an average of nine such calls per hour. Since 2003, these incidents have increased by 96 percent. According to the National Fire Protection Asso- ciation (NFPA), this increase can be attributed to the increased use of CO detectors which alert people to the presence of carbon monoxide.

• If the CO alarm sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel arrive. • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow.

New Winter Shelter to Open in Prince William Energy Assistance Applications Now Being Accepted PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA … The Prince William County Government Winter Shelter, operated by the Department of Social Services, will opened its doors last Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, which is two days earlier than normal. Typically, the winter shelter opens Nov. 1. Social Services decided to open the shelter early due to the expected cold weather. The shelter is located at 14730 Potomac Mills Road, in Woodbridge and operates overnight seven days a week from 6:30 p.m. to 7 a.m. until March 31, 2013. The shelter is for single individuals only and is run on a first-come, firstserved basis; however, single women may be referred to an overflow program. The maximum capacity of the Winter
Shelter is 50 people, which includes staff members. Winter Shelter provided services are meals, beds, showers and referrals for additional resources. During daytime hours Monday-Saturday at the winter shelter facility, the Department of Social Services partners with the Cooperative Council of Ministries to provide a “Drop-In Center” for homeless individuals to receive mental health referrals, GED classes and employment assistance from area churches, homeless service providers and individuals.

ginia ... El Refugio de Invierno del Condado de Prince William, operado por el Departamento de Servicios Sociales, abrió el Martes, 30 de octubre 2012, es decir, dos días antes de lo normal. Por lo general, el refugio invernal se inaugura el 1 de Noviembre. Servicios Sociales decidió abrir el albergue antes de tiempo debido al clima frío esperado. El refugio está ubicado en 14730 Potomac Mills Road, Woodbridge, VA y opera durante toda la noche, los siete días de la semana de 6:30 pm a 7 am hasta el 31 de marzo de 2013. El refugio es para personas solteras y funciona con el criterio del que primero llega, primero se atiende, sin embargo, las mujeres solteras pueden ser referidos a un programa auxiliar de ayuda. La
capacidad máxima del refugio de invierno es de 50 personas, que incluye a miembros del personal. El refugio ofrece comidas, camas, duchas y referencias para recursos y/o servicios adicionales. Durante las horas del día de lunes a sábado en las instalaciones de refugio de invierno, el Departamento de Servicios Sociales en combinación con el Consejo de Cooperación de los Ministerios proporcionan un “Drop-In Center” para las personas sin hogar donde pueden recibir referencias de salud mental, clases de GED y de ayuda para empleo de las iglesias del área, los proveedores de servicios del area y particulares que quieran ayudar en los diferentes programas.
