Name: FRIDA XUEREB Department: ADMINISTRATION Job Title: ADMINISTRATION MANAGER Time at Azure: 10 AND A HALF YEARS

PERRY’S WORDS

Azure is charging into 2014 with plenty of new initiatives to increase member satisfaction and give even more value to the ownership. We are extremely excited with regards to the appointment of RCI as our new resort exchange partner for the coming years. With this new affiliation comes a bundle of features and benefits. New and existing members will find greater added value, flexibility and availability, along with cutting edge efficiency without sacrificing that personal touch and service, that is lacking in many companies these days. We will be in touch with you soon, with the finer details of this exciting news!

What has been your favourite holiday to date?

What key skills do you bring to Azure? I have very good organisational skills. As I have been here since day one, I know the business well and I support other departments with administrative queries. How do you spend your free time? I enjoy taking long walks. Saturday is family day. I invite everyone to my home so we can spend family time together. Sunday, on the other hand is the day I keep free for myself and

my husband so we can spend quality time together.

My favourite place is the Canadian Rockies - so beautiful. They comprise the Canadian segment of the North American Rocky Mountains range. They are the eastern part of the Canadian Cordillera, extending from the Interior Plains of Alberta to the Rocky Mountain Trench of British Columbia. The mountains, the lakes and the colour of the lake water are just stunning. I cannot describe how picturesque this place is! If you had a motto or saying for life, what would it be?

“Live life to the full while you can and stay healthy. ”

Live life to the full while you can and stay healthy.

What do you enjoy about Malta and do you have any tips for our guests when they visit? We have a beautiful, rich history, dating back thousands of years. We are surrounded by beautiful churches, pleasant sandy or rocky beaches and are so fortunate to have a mild winter compared to the rest

Also, we recently attended the Leisure Real Estate Summit in London, at the end of February, where we spoke on a few different panels. We discussed:

• • • •

What’s happened What’s happening where The psychology of the market Property for passport – the retirement market and residency topics

We highlighted the benefits of retiring in Malta as opposed to other EU countries and judging by the reaction we have already received from members to Key Location Properties ads in our previous newsletter, it seems Malta with its many incentives for UK retirees, is scoring very high on places to retire. Let’s also not forget our charity event this year. Once again we will be supporting ‘Help the Heroes’ and ‘Cancer Research’. Some of the team at Azure were very keen to be involved this year alongside Kevin Camilleri and myself, known in the rally circles as the infamous ‘Kevin & Perry go Dakar’ after our 2012 completion of the Dakar rally. People find this Kevin & Perry theme comical wherever we go. Kev, being Maltese had no idea of the namesake comedy TV series or why the laughter we received, until I showed him a YouTube clip of Kevin & Perry Go Large featuring Harry Enfield and Kathy Burke.

AZURE STAYS AHEAD OF INDUSTRY TRENDS Sarah Mazzone

Azure, Malta was delighted to be one of the main sponsors at this year’s Leisure Real Estate Summit 2014 in London this February. We are grateful to Boutique Hotel Media and Fractional Life for organising this fantastic event for the second year in a row. Attending with my Project Director, Perry Newton and Membership Director, Gavin Dickinson was a pleasure. From a marketing point of view it was a massive opportunity for me to network with other professionals within the Real Estate Leisure industry and share ideas, best practice and see what the top trends are within our sector and ensure, as a company, they are implemented throughout Azure.

The Rally Raid event this year is the Hellas Rally (www.hellasrally.org) Greece’s premier rally event of the year. Kevin and myself will be riding our rally-prepared motorcycles, supported by Torque Racing UK and will be joined by two new Team Azure members, Nigel Anastasi (Graphic Designer) and Alex Collyer (Sales Manager). We will be equally split, Malta Team vs. Team GB!

It is my responsibility to make sure we are always marketing our products and services well to our customers. Whether marketing to members or potential members, this must be done in the most effective and efficient way, within a platform and/or device each customer is happy using, be it social media, website, mobile or tablet. Therefore, attending events such as the Leisure Real Estate Summit is a vital part of evolving the company.

We endeavour to have every member cross the finish line of this 6-day race. Anyone interested in our progress will be able to track our journey on the Hellas Rally website through a live satellite tracking of the event. Updates and pictures will follow this serious sporting event that allows us to again raise money for charities close to our hearts. We will do our best as usual and hope for an incredibly fun and safe rally raid race.

A huge congratulations to all of our Azure members.... as the number 1 ‘top trend’ at the summit was how and why ‘Luxury across all classes’. Our Azure members are way ahead of this trend. At the summit we were shown industry statistics on the number of people that are turning to Vacation Ownership. Vacation Club Memberships, especially within Europe, are set to soar in 2014/15. This is due to consumers wanting more luxury for their money, over a longer period of time, at a consistently high standard. Our members are already achieving this via their Azure membership and now more holidaymakers are seeing sense in owning Vacation Ownership.

I’ll sign off leaving you to read all the exciting happenings at Azure, the Golden Sands resort and in Malta. I have been warned not to talk about the weather as I always do, and I haven’t...but it is 19 degrees today and for March, I think that’s pretty amazing!

Perry Newton Project Director, Azure

Thank you to everyone involved in organising the summit and we wish you a very successful 2014. We will see you this time next year.

TOP TIPS TO STAY HEALTHY ON HOLIDAY Resident Master Personal Trainer Chris Mamo

More and more people go away on holiday each year to rest and recuperate but also don’t wish to undo all the hard work, they do daily in the form of exercise and staying healthy. Bearing this in mind, Azure has employed the services of qualified Master Personal Trainer, Chris Mamo, to be on hand to members throughout their stay, to offer advice and personalised programmes. Chris has a long history spanning 12 years with the British Army including deployments to Iraq twice, Kosovo and tours of the Middle East, before following his current passion for Fitness.

“I have always had a great passion for fitness and truly believe that with a healthier lifestyle many of today’s problems and stresses can be more easily managed or even eliminated”, says Chris.

4 STEPS

VARIATIONS

TO THE PERFECT PUSH UP 1

2

Lie on the floor face down and place your hands just outside shoulder width while holding your torso up at arms length.

Next, lower yourself downwards until your chest almost touches the floor, as you inhale.

If you are new at this exercise and do not have the strength to perform it, you can either bend your legs at the knees to take off resistance or perform the exercise against the wall instead of the floor.

For the most advanced lifters, you can place your feet at a high surface such as a bench in order to increase the resistance and to target the upper chest more.

CHRIS’S NUTRITION TIPS Pick healthy protein sources like fish and beans, not burgers and hot dogs!

3

Now breath out and press your upper body back up to the starting position while squeezing your chest.

4

After a brief pause at the top contracted position, you can begin to lower yourself downward again for as many repetitions as needed.

Eating fish, chicken, beans, or nuts in place of red meat and processed meat can lower the risk of heart disease and diabetes. Limit red meat - beef, pork, or lamb - to twice a week or less. Avoid processed meat - bacon, cold cuts, hot dogs, and similar meats - since they strongly raise the risk of heart disease, diabetes and colon cancer.

CHRIS’S FITNESS TIPS TAKE THE STAIRS! The lift at work or at the shopping centre may be a nice convenience, but taking the stairs will strengthen your heart, burn extra calories, and tone your entire lower body. If you have stairs at home, take every opportunity to scale them. Make it fun by chasing your kids up to their rooms.

LET’S GO NOBLE Malta formed part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies with the arrival of Count Roger of Normandy in 1090 and noble fiefs were granted as early as the 14th century to Maltese individuals. With the establishment of the Order of the Knights of St. John in 1530, many noble families were confirmed in their titles and others were granted to distinguished Maltese, for services rendered to the Order. Out of these families, the rightful descendants of four of them still live in their original ancestral homes, palaces, or country estates. We encourage our guests to visit these sumptuous palaces starting from Palazzo Parisio in Naxxar which was restored by Baroness Christianne Ramsay Scicluna, a direct descendant of Marquis Scicluna. This beautiful place with lovely gardens also has tea rooms and a fine dining restaurant, a gem of Rocco architecture. Jasper de Trafford opens his doors to our guests at Villa Bologna in Attard, just a stone throw from San Anton Palace and garden. His ancestor Count de la Catena, Lord Gerald Strickland, once a Prime Minister of Malta, inherited this property from the Peridicomati-Bologna noble family. In the heart of Valletta, Marquis Nicholas de Piro hosts visitors to Casa Rocca Piccola, a town palace full of family memorabilia. His title Depiro D’Amico Inguanez is one of the oldest titled families in Malta.

In, Gudja, Baron Gino Trapani Galea Feriol resides in Palazzo Bettina, an imposing estate with a most original Tower with glass embedded in stone which shines as it reflects the Sun’s rays. Although not open to the public, this palazzo had two distinguished visitors, General Napoleon Bonaparte in 1798 and Vice Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson as guests of General Thomas Graham, accompanied by Sir William and Lady Emma Hamilton. This brief parenthesis about our noble families is another aspect of the rich cultural and historical heritage of this small island of Malta, in the Mediterranean Sea, which for thousands of years has been the home to great civilizations, from the erection of temples here around 3500 BC right up to modern times. This whole extraordinary space of the Mediterranean from Gibraltar to Jaffa and Genoa to Tunis, bringing to life pilgrims, pirates, sultans and naval commanders - has shaped much of world history.

Until the next time... All the best.

SARAH AND MATHIEU SPEND THEIR HONEYMOON IN MALTA Grazielle Camilleri

Newlyweds Sarah Louise Wheeler and Mathieu David Jackson from Sale, Trafford came over to the Golden Sands resort in Malta this February to enjoy their honeymoon to the fullest. Sarah’s parents, Mary and Arthur have been club members with Azure since 2007 and it is they who suggested that their daughter and her new husband use their week for this special occasion. Sarah informs us that during one of their holidays at our resort, the bartender Philip created the most wonderful and refreshing cocktail for their parents. Since it was Sarah’s birthday that day, and the new cocktail recipe was such a popular one with other guests, the cocktail actually took the name The Sarah Wheeler Cocktail and it is still found on the resort’s drinks menu today.

We wish Sarah and Mathieu a happy life together!

Member Exclusive

Q: Sarah, how were you convinced to choose Malta as your honeymoon destination? All the members of my family, including my brothers and sisters, have visited Malta several times and they have just fallen in love with the people and the island. During one of their holidays, my parents were invited on a promotional visit and they decided to become members they liked the place so much. Since 2007, they have visited Malta every year. They talk about it all the time and show us beautiful photographs. We have always wanted to go to Malta and when mum and dad suggested we use their week for the honeymoon, it seemed like a perfect idea. We couldn’t think of a more perfect place to spend our honeymoon!

MALTA’S PARKS & GARDENS PART 1

EXPERIENCE VILLA BOLOGNA Kirsti Newton

LARGE BAROQUE NYMPHAEUM

Away from the sandy beaches and picturesque fishing villages, venturing further in to the heart of the island, Malta shows visitors another side of its seductive charm, with stately homes and manicured Mediterranean gardens awaiting discovery, sheltered behind high stone walls, away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. One fine example of an aristocratic house is Villa Bologna, located in the village of Attard, adjacent to the President’s Kitchen Garden and San Anton Palace, built by Fabrizio Grech a noted lawyer and senior legal advisor to Grand Master Pinto de Fonseca, in 1745.

It was Lord Strickland’s second wife, Margaret Holton, a keen gardner who was responsible for designing most of the new gardens at the rear of the villa; quadrupling their size and adding a unique dolphin fountain, walk ways, vegetable gardens and more citrus orchards.

It is said that he built Villa Bologna, one of Malta’s most magnificent houses, as a dowry for the marriage of his daughter Maria Theresa Grech to Nicola Perdicomati Bologna, succeeding in silencing those who mocked him upon announcement of the marriage, for being a person of much wealth due to his status of ‘uditore’ to the Grand Master and not even owning a residence.

Collect a map upon arrival and enjoy a tour of the gardens at your leisure. Thirteen points of interest have been marked on the map. For the digitally minded, an iPad can be your guide, offering interesting historical facts and pictures to absorb, along the way.

Villa Bologna Highlights

Villa Bologna was inherited in the 1890’s by Sir Gerald Strickland, a prominent name in British and Maltese politics. The former Prime Minister of Malta and founder of Allied Newspapers and Progress Press, lived in the property until his death in August of 1940. He is buried at the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Paul in Mdina. Villa Bologna is one of only a few properties in Malta today still inhabited by descendants of the original family and is today lived in by Lord Strickland’s grandson, Gerald de Trafford. His son, Jasper de Trafford manages the estate and kindly gave me a tour of the intriguing property, along with its expansive gardens.

WWII SHELTER A steep staircase takes you down to the shelters, all originally dug by hand with pickaxes. An audiovisual space today, allows you to see the depth of these shelters along with a short film on wartime in Malta.

Painstakingly restored to its former glory, this unique Baroque monument remains unrivalled in Malta and depicts the four seasons.

CERAMIKA MALTIJA The old stables were converted in 1951 by Lord Strickland’s second daughter, Cecilia and today these converted stables house Malta’s oldest ceramic workshop, open to the public. Everything is produced by hand on site from white earthenware clay using slip casting moulds and hand painted by in-house artists to produce a unique piece, found nowhere else on the island. Notice the stone horse trough feature kept in one of the pottery rooms. Allow up to 2 hours for a leisurely tour of this beautiful, noble house and gardens. For the younger ones, a small playground in the gardens will entertain. For further information on how to visit Villa Bologna pass by the Guest Relations Coordinator’s desk in reception, or call Henri Diacono on extension 3106

MALTA WINS AGAINBEST PLACE TO RETIRE & BEST CLIMATE Grazielle Camilleri

Best place to retire, best climate and second safest country in the world are just a few of the titles given to Malta in the press earlier this year. Apart from having some of the best weather and one of the lowest crime rates in the world it’s no wonder retiring here is attractive. Malta is truly a gem in the centre of the Mediterranean, and through the media it is becoming better known as a fantastic holiday destination. Like all islands subject to the whims of modern tourism, Malta throws up sharp contrasts, which are made all the more striking because of the island’s small size. Ancient temples – some of the oldest freestanding structures on earth – and the massive fortifications and palazzi of the Knights of St. John all rub shoulders with the more modern Malta, its entertainment venues and varied tourist infrastructure. English is the second language, spoken widely throughout the islands.

The U.K paper - The Telegraph nominated Malta as the no. 1 best place to retire abroad. Factors taken into account included crime rates, taxation, health care costs, property prices, grocery bills as well as average temperature, rainfall and hours of sunshine. The recently published 2013 edition of the World Risk Report, drawn up by the United Nations University’s Institute for Environment and Human Security in Bonn and Alliance Development Works, a coalition of German NGOs, named Malta, once again, as the world’s second safest country in terms of its exposure to and ability to cope with natural disasters, following Qatar. Malta is not only an excellent travel destination all year round, known for its sunshine, culture and its friendly locals, but it is becoming increasingly well known, internationally for its financial strength and promising location for property investments.

In recent years, attractive, low tax rate incentives have attracted international businesses to set up in Malta, highlighted in the media. Where a lot of the world seems to be suffering from extreme temperature changes and various sorts of political or financial unrest, Malta the little island in the Mediterranean has remained unaffected by these negative impacts. Internationalliving.com online magazine named Malta, together with Ecuador and Uruguay as the best three countries in the world when it comes to climate. With over 300 days of guaranteed sunshine each year, it is no surprise for Malta to be nominated in this category. Winters are short, mild and relatively warm. The average temperature in winter is 57F and 73F in summer. The length of daylight is about 6.5 hours in winter and 10.5 hours in summer, making it extremely pleasant to live in.

EASTER IN MALTA & AROUND THE GLOBE Grazielle Camilleri

Easter is celebrated in a variety of ways throughout various regions and countries across the globe. From religious festivities to traditions carried on from generation to generation, it is so interesting to learn the various ways in which Easter is celebrated.

“I look forward to Easter every year. For me

and my partner it’s all about chocolates! One thing I do is I invite my closest friends for an Easter egg decorating activity. I get to add more to my extensive collection of painted eggs each year.

- Jon Grafton United Kingdom In Malta Holy week starts on Friday before Palm Sunday (Ħadd il-Palm). This is when the very popular feast of Our Lady of Sorrows (Festa ta’ Marija Addolorata), is celebrated in Malta. A procession is held in Valletta and other villages. The statue of Our Lady of Sorrow (Id-Duluri) is lifted in adoration. With great devotion, the participants pray, sing hymns and sometimes devote walks barefooted behind the statue as a sign of sacrifice, to express gratitude for receiving a special grace. Maundy Thursday (Hamis ix-Xirka) is the day that the Last Supper of Christ with the twelve apostles is commemorated. On this day in Malta, highlights include exhibitions representing the Last Supper (L-Ahhar Cena). You will expect to see life size statues depicting Jesus and the Apostles, intricate religious paintings made from rice and so much more hand-made unique pieces. On Good Friday (Il-Gimgha l-Kbira) in Malta, it is custom for believers to visit the seven tabernacles in seven different churches. No church bells are rung on this day. Dismal and intense religious pageants and processions are held in many towns and villages, in which local amateur actors re-enact various scenes from the Passion of Christ. In some parts of Malta, you will see a number of penitents dressed in white robes and hoods, walking barefoot (or occasionally carrying heavy chains and weights

“In Sweden on the Thursday or the Saturday,

I look forward to seeing little girls dress up in rags, old clothes, and oversized skirts and shawls and come to our doors with a copper kettle in hand asking for treats. On Påskafton, (Holy Saturday) young and old Swedish people exchange chocolate Easter Eggs. - Marja Ahlgren Sweden

On our Greek island of Corfu, on the morning of Holy Saturday, the traditional “Pot Throwing” takes place. We throw pots and pans and other stoneware out of our windows onto the street. It is believed that the throwing of the pots welcomes spring, symbolising the new crops that will be gathered in the new pots. - Dimitris Tsakiris Corfu, Greece

tied to their ankles) as a sacrifice for having received a special grace. This is truly a unique, medieval tradition which still survives today. On Easter Sunday morning, church bells ring incessantly throughout the Maltese islands from the early hours in celebration of the triumphal Resurrection of the Lord. It is purely a day of celebration and joy. The traditional Maltese Easter cakes, the Figollas are given to children and adults. (The Figolla is a delicious baked sweet pastry cut in particular shapes, it is filled with almonds, covered with icing sugar and colourfully decorated and with little chocolate Easter eggs on it.) Morning processions, with the statue of the Risen Christ (L-Irxoxt) carried by strong statue bearers are held throughout the main villages, to the applause of the crowds. Following the processions, all relatives get together for a large, festive lunch. Traditionally this includes roasted lamb served with baked potatoes and local vegetables in gravy.

Set up in 2007 and managed by the Heritage Parks Federation, Il-Majjistral Nature and History Park is located in Mellieħa and covers the coastal stretch from Golden Bay to Anchor Bay spreading inland to the village of Manikata. Apart from the wide-ranging views and the variety of habitats it sustains, the park is home to around 430 species of flowering plants including 18 endemics as well as rich variety of orchids with up to 10 species

encountered. Look out along the rocky garigue for the endemics flowering this spring such as the carpet-like formations of the lovely smelling Maltese Sea Chamomile and the pretty in pink Maltese Pyramidal Orchid. Watch your step along the paths for the miniature Barbary Nut Iris! But the park is not just about flowers – 10 birds are known to breed in the park whilst numerous visit

Ladies, travelling to the Czech republic over Easter? You’d better watch your back! I certainly do when I’m in my home town. I know this may sound strange, but we have an Easter Monday tradition in which men spank the ladies with handmade whips made of willow and decorated with ribbons. According to legend, the willow is the first tree to bloom in the spring, so the branches are supposed to transfer the tree’s vitality and fertility to the women. This good-humoured smacking is all in good fun!

We have a funny Polish Easter tradition called Smingus-Dyngus. What happens is that on Easter Monday, the boys try their best to soak other people with buckets of water, squirt guns or anything they can get their hands on. The legend says that the girls who get drenched will marry within the year. The rather refreshing tradition originates from the baptism of Polish Prince Mieszko on Easter Monday in 966 AD.

during migration. Breeding birds include spectacled warbler, corn bunting, tawny pipit and the National Bird the blue rock thrush. Spring visitors include european bee-eater, hoopoe and common Kestrel. The park organises guided nature walks of about 4 Km for guests at the hotel starting and ending at the Member’s Lounge. A quintessentially British tradition of taking afternoon tea began in the early 19th century when Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, introduced a cup of afternoon tea, bread butter and cakes as an interim before the often late evening meals, often far too long await since the only other meal of the day – breakfast. Served today, amongst the finest London hotels, afternoon tea has become a popular event, with hotels around the world showcasing their variations on the traditional tea and finger – sized sandwiches. Experience the Mokka afternoon tea, at least once during your stay and sample mouth watering flavours with a Mediterranean twist, coupled with idyllic surroundings looking out over the arguably the finest views on the island and an infinite selection of tea’s to choose from, Mokka’s afternoon tea is the perfect afternoon treat after a hard day of sightseeing, swimming or indeed relaxing by the pool or beach.

“Excellent hotel with great facilities, great staff, great food and superb views.”

everybody sincerely and spend a little time getting to know a little about guests. Nothing is too much trouble. He is a great asset to the hotel & a great example to the younger members of staff. Stayed October 2013, travelled as a couple

Reviewed 30 March 2014 Jenny E, Liverpool I have stayed at this hotel three times with my family of 2 adults and 4 children aged 6, 8, 9 &14. We love it so much we bought a membership on our last visit & will be going back in June & October this year. The apartments are spotlessly clean, very well equipped and extremely spacious. We stay in a two bed apartment with seaview. The children love the Kids Club & my husband & I get to have time to ourselves both in the daytime & some evenings. The indoor & outdoor pools are lovely & clean as are the gym, sauna & steam room. There are numerous restaurants which are very reasonably priced. We found Flavours most suitable for our needs with young children as it provides an excellent buffet breakfast & buffet dinner with plenty of choice. We also loved Agliolio which is an Italian restaurant & pizzeria. The Mokka bar is lovely for light bites & coffees or a relaxing night cap. Swizzles bar is great for cocktails before dinner & is open late for drinks often with live music. Essence Restaurant is an a la carte restaurant & cocktail bar which we didn’t try as we didn’t think it suitable for young children. Can’t wait to try it when we return for a holiday without children in June! The Myoka Spa is a must for a little indulgent pampering & is definitely one of the best spas I have been to. They usually have special offers on each day. All staff in every area of the hotel couldn’t be more helpful. They really make this hotel special & are fundamental in making your stay here very special indeed. A big thank you goes to Henri who works tirelessly but always has time to greet

“Home from home” Reviewed 15 March 2014 Paddock Wood, United Kingdom We have been coming here since the hotel was built. The staff welcome us every time as if we are their family returning home.

“Perfect.” Reviewed 1 April 2014 Kilmarnock, United Kingdom We recently spent a week on a promotional trip to this hotel and have to say loved it so much bought a week. It is such a lovely place and the staff are excellent they cannot do enough for you. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who likes a quiet holiday but also has access to all the other amenities Malta has to offer. We are hoping to return in May through the week we bought and cannot wait. Special mention to Henrie in Fusions he is so nice cannot do enough for you also the staff of Mokka they were really nice to. The buses run from outside the hotel and will take you anywhere on the island you want to go and at a very low cost. Stayed February 2014, travelled as a couple

Eating is great in any of the food outlets. Flavours provides the eating experience, with the other restuarant’s providing choice and quality. Portions are on the large side so do not be afraid to have starter size as the main course. Good value and good company. Malta has a cheap bus service to get around the island. Fontanellas cake shop is a must for cake, coffee and excellent views across the island. Cordinas is also the place to be for fine food and wine if visiting Valletta.
