WHAT AN INCREDIBLE SUMMER! It seems that most of Europe has enjoyed the splendour of lazy summer days and the long light nights. It reminded me of my childhood and our long summer holidays in the 70’s with my grandparents, great memories of family times, sharing lots of fun. A time when family can come together, a precious time. We’ve seen lots of returning members and it’s great to see people meeting up with not only family but other members who visit year after year at the same time. Now the resort is at that stage of maturity where membership is flourishing in these ways, which certainly adds a lot of value to holiday times. “How quiet” it seems now as most of the families have gone and are preparing for “back to school”. More couples arrive this month, beaches too are far from crowded as the local Maltese schools start back again and the island will take on a completely different appearance, moving through to autumn. So, if any of you prefer a slower pace of life, beaches free from lots of people, pools to yourself, spare sunbeds and restaurants that can not only seat you but service you with a more personal touch too, then now’s the time to come…!

Team Azure also instigated and supported Malta’s first ever Bikesafe event in order to raise road safety awarness on Malta’s roads. The Kevin & Perry team exhibited their rally bikes from the Paris to Dakar rally, completed last year for charities: Unicef, Cancer Research and Malta Community Chest Fund. The event attracted lots of TV coverage. Let’s hope this starts a yearly event and media attention, supported by Malta’s Motorsport Federation and more importantly saves lives through enhanced road awareness!! Kevin & Perry also spent the last year preparing for the Transanatolia Rally in Turkey – we entered as usual as a Maltese entry but part of the UK’s team supported by Rallyraidproducts.co.uk and Torque Racing. After months of preparation, the rally organisers decided to cancel the 2014 edition due to unforseen circumstances only 9 days before the start date!! With all equipment and bikes shipped, this was a huge blow to the team as we were looking forward to the challenge and racing alongside our team mates in the UK and the (R2R) team race to recovery. A Few Words from the Project Director
Sales have gone well this summer and the booking demand for our promotional visits remain strong. These visits have become more and more vital as we approach 2015 and the opening of our resales facility. It is essential that we have a steady stream of incoming potential new members so that we maintain a balance of sales. Anyone thinking of listing their week for sale can request a resale listing agreement. Please bear in mind that although units may be listed for sale in 2015, there will be a limit to what is achievable within one sales year. We cannot guarantee resale amounts or timeframes, so be sure to request a listing agreement through Member Services who will advise you when this will be available to download from the website. Having an amazing resort isn’t always enough, we also need to maintain an excellent reputation.

We were disappointed as yet again we were to raise money for charity. Our chosen charities this year being the Malta Community Chest Fund , a charity close to the hearts of the President of Malta and also Help for Heroes. We’ve been asked to commit to the 2014 edition which we have accepted and are planning that as we speak. At least it gives us more time to practice whilst collecting more money for charity! On a final note I’m looking out over Golden Bay. It’s a clear fresh but hot sunny morning, the birds are singing in the trees, it’s 7:30am and the sea is calm and still with a slight breeze in the air. THINK ONCE THINK TWICE THINK BIKE A SUCCESSFUL TEAM AZURE INITIATIVE
By Grazielle Camilleri Hundreds of bikers flocked to the Bugibba Piazza in Malta on Friday 9th August to participate in the event “Think Once, Think Twice, Think Bike!”, a Team Azure initiative. Azure Malta’s Kevin & Perry, the Two Wheels Foundation, FIA and Malta Motorsports Federation joined forces to launch Malta’s first national motorbike safety campaign. The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness about safety on the Maltese roads, ranging from general road disciplines, courtesy, appropriate safety clothing, riding skills and bike maintenance in a bid to save lives and promote road sense. The campaign was not limited to bikers but also to drivers who need to be made more aware of motorbikes. The event was the brainchild of Kevin Camilleri & Perry Newton who successfully completed the arduous rally from Paris to Dakar in October last year. Kevin & Perry, Grazielle Camilleri (event co-ordinator) and the Tonio Cini (Malta Motorsport Federation President) launched the campaign officially on the 5th August from San Anton Palace in the presence and full support of the President of Malta, H.E. Dr. George Abela. The campaign had multiple streams, including a strong internet presence on Facebook through “Think Once, Think
Twice ,Think Bike!” Public dignitaries, the Police Force, National press including journalists and TV representatives attended this event, giving more exposure to the awareness message. On the main stage, in the centre of the piazza, there were discussions led by TV presenter Mr. John Bundy for the first hour. There was a ‘test area’ monitored by Cycle World Motoring School where tips on effective breaking and cornering were taking place. Live music followed from the popular Maltese band Colourblind. All funds raised from this initiative went towards the local charity, the Malta Community Chest Fund. The evening was a great success and it is hoped that it will become an annual event. WHY DO MR. & MRS. VELLA LOVE GOLDEN SANDS? By Grazielle Camilleri
DAVID AND JANET FROM CORNWALL GET MARRIED AT GOLDEN SANDS By Grazielle Camilleri
Azure members Janet Harding (57) and David Buckingham (57) from Falmouth, Cornwall, in England have been partners for the past three years, got married on September 10th 2013 at 4pm at the Azure resort at Golden Sands. The wedding ceremony was held on the upper terrace of the Essence Bar, which was followed by an intimate dinner reception at Essence restaurant with close family and friends.
Mr. & Mrs. Vella, Azure members since 2006, look forward to their one-week holiday at the Golden Sands resort every year and would not exchange it for anything.
Janet and David enjoy walking, gardening, cooking, swimming and most outdoor activities. They enjoy travel, holidays with friends and cruising along with discovering new red wines and good quality food in different countries around the world. Janet had been visiting Malta on holiday each year for about 10 years. It was then that she discovered Azure and purchased a membership.
Since they have known each other and got married, they have always loved to travel around the world, discovering different cultures and exploring each country’s highlights. Throughout the years, they have stayed at magnificent 5 star resorts in Russia, Italy, Germany, Spain, Cyprus, Turkey and Greece and many more! Their travelling was mainly due to the fact that Mr. Vella worked as the principal PR Officer at the office of the Prime Minister (Dr. George Borg Olivier and Dr. Fenech Adami to name a few) and travelling was part of the job. In 2006, they discovered Azure and fell in love with the resort and have been very happy members ever since.
Why Malta? Why Azure? “I love the Maltese people, their culture, their history and their genuine souls and we felt that this was where we wanted to come for our holidays on a regular basis. I was impressed with the quality of Azure’s product and when David came to Malta he felt exactly the same way. This was a really good decision and we have never had any regrets. Being in Malta is like our second home and reminds us of being in Cornwall. When we arrive, we feel so relaxed. The quality of everything is unbelievable. It does exactly what it says on the tin!

Despite having the option to exchange their week in Malta with one of the thousands of hotels available worldwide, they always choose to visit Golden Sands resort and they have never exchanged their week. “We honestly feel that here is like a second home for us. We are acquainted with all the members of staff who are ever so friendly and helpful. We love nothing better than sitting on the sofas on the balcony and watching sunsets together, we love to order cocktails in the bars, of an evening and dine in the hotel restaurants. Once we step inside the resort, we do not feel the need to leave the hotel for anything, as everything we need is here - at the touch of a button! The Order of St.John In our interview Mr. Vella informs us proudly that he was recently given an award for being the most senior knight of the Orthodox Order of St. John Russian Grand Priory. He is in fact the only Maltese still surviving since the introduction of the order in Malta and told us that he was, for many years, the official editor of the Gazette of the Order, bringing with him a few examples of this gazette,

to show us. He was also the editor for a well-known information directory known as the “Pronostku Malti”, way before the days of the Internet and Google searches. In the past, when residents needed to know about people or events, they would look it up in this informative Pronostku, published annually. Unfortunately, due to health reasons, Mr. Vella is not as physically fit as he was in the past, so much so that travelling out of Malta has become challenging. “This is all the more reason to be grateful to still be able to have a vacation in Malta at Golden Sands each year”, he adds with a smile.
Surprise! As a small token of appreciation to Mr. & Mrs. Vella, for being such positive members, who have only beautiful things to share with the rest of the world about us, Team Azure, along with the food and beverage team of the hotel, had a few surprises organised for them during their stay, this year. Mr. and Mrs. Vella and their visiting family enjoyed complimentary breakfast at the resort, along with a surprise dinner one evening at Flavours restaurant, including wine and champagne. They were also presented with one free week at Golden Sands, for them to use in low season, at their own convenience. It was a pleasure for us to see the look on their faces with every surprise and we would like to thank Mr. Chris Martin, an Azure member and friend of Mr. & Mrs. Vella in helping us to organise these surprises.

We purchased a timeshare apartment four years ago and have had no problems with it since. We have a large corner apartment, which gives views to the sea and the countryside from the large wrap around balconies. The apartment is very well furnished and well kept. The daily cleaning staff has always been very efficient and pleasant when we met them. I have never met such polite and efficient staff. A high proportion of which are Maltese and can give good advice on places to go and what to see. We are returning again in June 2014 and are very much looking forward to it.

“Relaxing Stay at Radisson Blu Golden sands Malta” Reviewed 10 September 2013 Milton Keynes, United Kingdom Just got back from a week at Golden Sands. Must confess that the hotel and island met all my expectations from the reviews I read; We had the self catering room with country view and the sea view just on the left. It was epic!! It’s not in the city centre but there are various buses you could take and get into town for some sightseeing and shopping. We did the south and north tour of the island and a harbour cruise. A very popular museum for those interested in modern day history and life during wartime, offers informative displays highlighting Malta’s struggle and significant role during World War II. Numerous exhibits include interesting displays of uniforms, weapons, vehicles and medals including the George Cross medal awarded to the island of Malta on 15th April 1942 for its heroism and devotion of its people during the war.
Situated in Birgu’s picturesque waterfront and adjacent to the Freedom Day monument, this once old Naval Bakery building, depicting Malta’s maritime history offers well documented displays and models of boats, engines, Roman anchors, French sabres and historical data throughout the eras including Malta’s close relationship with the British Navy.

MALTA – AN EXPERIENCE FOR ALL YOUR SENSES.

The measure of a good holiday is dependant on a lot more than the sun shining (although this is a big factor!). It’s more than a good meal in the best restaurant or that happy accident of stumbling upon the country’s revered location at sunset – it’s ALL of these and more. • •

Want a gourmet experience? - Ask the locals, they should know! Want to venture off the beaten track – Do it. Hire a car and set off. The great thing about an island 17 miles long by 9 miles wide is that you won’t stay lost for long! Want a cultural experience – Take a trusty guidebook and explore 7,000 years of history and architectural heaven.
So with all this in mind, here’s my suggestions to engage your senses and gain the most from your visit to this enchanted island, slap bang in the middle of the Med.
From sandy beaches and impressive churches, to museums and UNESCO World Heritage sites, where it seems that time has stood still, you will be glad you chose to explore the tiny island of Gozo, even if only for one or two days. I have been many times and here is a list of random things to do in Gozo that I recommend. Take your pick!

Taste Malta’s national drink – Kinnie. A unique
flavour of bitter oranges and aromatic herbs is a popular non-alcoholic thirst quencher or ideal ingredient for a cocktail. Kinnie – the taste of summer in Malta.
Smell Malta’s diverse and mouth-watering local
fare. The alluring aromas of Rabbit stews (Stuffat tal-Fenek) fresh fish soups (Ajlotta) and a traditional Maltese beef dish (Bragioli) not forgetting the addictive taste of the local bread (Hobza tal–Malti) from kitchens and restaurants across the island will ensure that you leave the diet at the door until your departure!
Hear the church bells. With over 360 churches
around the island, its not like you’ll miss out on the chance! Celebrate the sounds of summer by attending the local festa, through towns and villages across the islands. Weekend celebrations through festooned streets culminate in evenings of festivities and fireworks. The Maltese know how to party and party hard!
Touch the sparkling Mediterranean Sea that
caresses the shores of the island’s sandy beaches. Feel the warmth of the waters so blue, they look like they’ve been photo shopped. Now you’re on holiday!
See spectacular sunsets at the end of another cloud free day. The north of the island particularly around Golden Bay offers unparalleled views of the sun melting into the horizon, casting its final rays across the still water. A definite Kodak moment!
When in Gozo you must: • Rent out a cool quad bike or a safari jeep and
have fun touring the island with your friends in style.
• Visit Dwejra, to explore the unique Inland
Sea, take a brief boat ride and also capture a photo memory in front of the Azure window, (Maltese: Tieqa Żerqa), a natural arch. This site is famous with photographers worldwide for its natural beauty.
• Pay a visit to the Ta’ Pinu Church, the national
shrine of the blessed virgin of Ta’ Pinu, located a few hundred metres away from Gharb.
• Stop at Ta’ Dbiegi Crafts Village, located on the way to Dwejra to watch local crafts being done by artisans and to purchase genuine souvenirs.
• Go to Cittadella, in the heart of Victoria. It is
a historic fortified city built in circa 1500 BC. Explore the architecture and walk through its narrow, winding streets. When there, do stop for a snack at “Ta Rikardu”, a casual dining restaurant famous with locals for its tasty Gozitan platters, including cheeselets and fresh vegetables of the day.
• Visit one of the several Gozo diving centres and try a test dive in Gozo’s clear blue waters. You may be lucky to spot some beautiful fish and shipwrecks!
• Visit the Megalithic Temples of Ggantija, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
• Go on a Gozo sightseeing Hop On Hop Off
bus tour, which will stop at Gozo’s highlight destinations.
• Experience a beautiful sunset at Xlendi Bay
and then enjoy a romantic dinner at one of the excellent fish restaurants situated at the water’s edge.

Situated close by in Qawra, the Malta National Aquarium has opened its doors to visitors this summer. Friendly staff are close by to guide you through the names of the hundreds of different and more unusual species of fish from around the world. The history of Malta is depicted throughout this walk-through experience and along with a water tunnel where you can view the sharks overhead, this truly is a wonderful attraction for the whole family, when visiting Malta. WHAT’S ON IN MALTA HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE COMING MONTHS By Kirsti Newton
28TH & 29TH SEPTEMBER THE AIRX MALTA INTERNATIONAL AIRSHOW 2013 19 years have passed since the first air show in Malta and each year this weekend has gained a reputation for being Malta’s top outdoor family events and one of Malta’s most photographed. A fabulous day out for everyone, with static and aerial aircraft displays that cannot fail to impress, with participants attending from around the world. This year’s star attraction has just been confirmed. The amazing Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team - The Red Arrows, will be dazzling the audience with their death defying stunts across Malta’s skies. So get your cameras at the ready and make a day (or two) of it. Located on the Hal Farrug Road. Open from 10am – 5pm. Tickets: Adult €12 Children under 14 are FREE. Aerial Display begins at 1:30pm
5TH OCTOBER NOTTE BIANCA, VALLETTA A yearly event that transforms Valletta at night, through music and street entertainment, the city’s Museums and State Palaces open their doors offering a cultural feast to visitors, during this spectacular evening celebration.
6TH OCTOBER IN GUARDIA PARADE, BIRGU Ever wondered what it was like back in the days of the Order of St. John? Take a step back in time with the re-enactment of the inspection of the garrison and fort by the Bailiff, showcasing military drills and the fort in all its glory. The location is the beautiful city of Vittoriosa (Birgu).

Now in its 10th year, the Malta Military Tattoo includes bands from Malta and abroad, where groups, guarantee an entertaining evening of precision marching, formation displays, along with good music and dancing.
Showing at Eden Cinemas, St Julian’s, Tchaikovsky’s overture to The Nutcracker offers a pre-Christmas treat. Tickets are priced at €23 for Adults and €10 for Children under 16.
19TH OCTOBER THE ROLEX MIDDLE SEA RACE A great classic offshore race commencing in Grand Harbour and an important event in the sailing calendar, the race previously included the famous Sir Chay Blyth amongst its high profile names. Sailing out to Sicily and the Aeolian islands, the race covers 606 nautical miles finishing in Malta’s Marsamxett harbour.

MALTA WALKS – IL-MAJJISTRAL NATURE & HISTORY PARK By Grazielle Camilleri The Majjistral Nature and History Park situated next to Golden Sands, is one of Malta’s largest protected areas and the only natural National Park on the island. It was set up in 2007 and is managed by three voluntary heritage organisations forming the Heritage Parks Federation.
The change in the landscape from summer to later in autumn can often be quite impressive, with Sea Squill bulbs starting to push its leaves up whilst its tiny counterpart, the Autumn Squill, covers the land with the tiniest of star-like white flowers with pink streaks. Mediterranean Meadow Saffron then waits its turn to create the most exquisite carpets of delicate pink, low on the ground and footpaths. Below the edge of the majestic headland plateaus lies another world with higher shrubs growing in the wild boulder scree – a favourite haunt of the National Bird the Blue Rock Thrush (MT: Merill) whose melodious song can be heard along the cliffs.
The park organises guided nature walks of about 4km for guests at the hotel starting and ending at the Members’ Lounge. I recently discovered the Malta Sightseeing Hop On Hop Off South Tour. It is a great way of viewing the highlights of Malta and it saves you having to worry about finding parking and driving around yourself. The Malta Sightseeing franchise is a very well organised one, having a large fleet of buses running day and night and I would recommend all visitors and even locals to go on one if they get the opportunity to do so! 1 Timetable of local buses If you want to maximise your day out spend 5 minutes beforehand looking at the local transport timetable online and photograph the departure points and timings, so you know exactly what time you need to be at the bus stop, giving you extra precious time relaxing at the beach. Tip: Take an image of the bus stop where you get off in case you wander off the beaten track, familiar landmarks in the background will guide you back there!

Dear friends and guests, you have to try this recipe at least once in your life! You will just love it as you love Malta and its local traditions. To make the traditional Maltese “Hobz biz-Zejt u Tadam” (bread with oil and tomatoes), these are the Ingredients you need: A Maltese loaf (Hobza) Ripe red tomatoes You need about one whole one per slice of bread. Some good quality olive oil. Maltese olive oil is fantastic, and worth the price. Fresh black pepper and sea salt Fresh basil or mint
THIS IS HOW WE MAKE IT • Slice the loaf of bread in thick slices. • Cut each tomato in half horizontally, so that all the seed pockets are exposed. • Then slowly rub the bread with the cut side of the tomato, squeezing the tomato whilst doing this, so that the bread is stained with the colour of the tomato. • Place the tomatoes to the side. Pour some olive oil onto a plate, grind plenty of pepper and sprinkle generous amounts of the sea salt. • Then you have to dip each half of the bread into the oil, and pat them together so that all the surfaces of the bread are covered evenly. • Finally, put the tomatoes back on the bread and sprinkle with a little more salt and pepper to taste adding chopped basil or mint.
TIP I like it best when it is served with some fresh ġbejniet (Maltese goat cheeselets), olives, capers and diced fresh onions. Enjoy making ‘Hobz biz-zejt u tadam’!

This one hour of fun was good for all of us to unwind and appreciate our beach and location. Our next event with our owners will be the Olive Picking towards the beginning of October. Down on the southern tip of Malta, midway between St Thomas Bay and Marsaxlokk, is a Megalithic temple (c. 3100 -2500) built on a hill now known as Tas-Silg. The Temple of Juno so venerated that it remained sacred and unviolated, not only during the Punic Wars which ravaged those places with their naval forces, but also in spite of those multitudinous pirates roaming the Mediterranean. Tas-Silg is the only prehistoric structure on Malta to be used by the Phoenicians for their own religious needs. The site, which is under the care of Heritage Malta, is closed to the general public. However, I have made representations with the competent authorities and I intend to organise a visit exclusively for our guests. Malta in the nineteenth century became a favoured destination for members of the English gentry afflicted with various ailments and seeking treatment in its balmy climate. Such was the reason why the Rt. Hon. John Hookham Frere came to Malta with his wife, Lady Elizabeth Errol, as the warm weather would help her ladyship to recover from her ailments. Later John Hookham Frere took over a property in Pieta and developed it into a sumptuous residence complete with a large garden and belvedere, assisted by architect George Grognet de Vasse - my ancestor. A campaign has been set up ‘
Save Villa Frere’ in order to preserve this residence, once the hub of so many personalities and members of the British Royal family visiting this place. From our side through the Members Lounge, I proposed that we actively participate to help in the conservation of this architectural gem, so closely linked to the beginning of British Era in Malta.
Let us not forget the Turtles! Nature Trust gave us a very interesting talk in the Members Lounge regarding their ‘Adopt a Turtle’ campaign. The Rehabilitation Project initiated by the Marine Centre for Fisheries Sciences in collaboration with Nature Trust has launched a campaign to adopt injured turtles. Treatment and recovery from injuries may take sometime prior to the animal being released during the hot months when the seawater temperature is over 21 degrees centigrade. Anybody can adopt a turtle and as Members of Azure, I propose that a small donation towards this good cause can be organised during the Members’ drinks party and the turtle will be named ‘Azure’. Ms. Shawna Cleary will be only too willing to attend such gatherings and talk ab out this project. One must not forget that turtle feed on jellyfish so let us have more turtles in the Mediterranean Sea! Autumn has a variety of activities organised by various local councils in Malta, which will definitely be of interest to us all including Notte Bianca in Valletta, Maritime Senglea, Birgu Fest and Lunchtime Concerts in St Francis Church in Valletta. A completely new venture - The Malta National Aquarium in Qawra, St. Paul’s Bay, has recently opened its doors. Take the opportunity to explore the exciting experience of the Maltese and tropical Marine World. Tropical Marine, Sharks, a HMS Stubborn P238 submarine wreck and Mediterranean species await you in this aquarium, offering a great day out for all the family! It has been wonderful to meet so many of you this summer at the resort and at events arranged, including the popular summer barbecue and I look forward to meeting many more during your visit to Golden Sands.
