The essay continues El ensayo empieza aquí (The essay starts here). Little did we know how premonitory the title of the 2020 edition of Gutun Zuria, Bilbao International Literature Festival would turn out to be. We proposed an exploration, by way of a collective essay, of the transformations taking place in society under the guise of normalcy. The pandemic has accelerated that process. Although the festival could not take place in person, the project has remained open during these months as a real-time essay. The Festival is therefore unfolding in a timely manner, with last year's edition transformed into a book and with a hybrid programme where, once again, the words go beyond the pages of the book to dialogue with other artistic disciplines. Similarly, Prototipoak. International Meeting of New Artistic Forms, has been transformed and extended through the month of June, when the artists will share the results of their work with the public in a new biennial. Prototipoak is the model for our programming, the interconnection between different artistic disciplines designed to be shared with the audience, not only the end product but the process as well. Rather than a single point in time, it is something that continues and is transformed as time goes by and conditions change. These are just two examples of what is in store for the new 2020/2021 season. We have resized and relocated the

events, honouring all of our contracts and projects and redesigning our strategy to safely welcome the public and avoid the stagnation of the artistic collective. In recent months we have returned to the cinema, to shows and to libraries. We have come back to culture and confirmed that it is safe and necessary, not only as a space for gathering, reflection and knowledge, but also as a social and developmental asset. The professionals who are part of this effort, from the musicians to the researchers, technicians, designers, translators and choreographers, are essential for this society to move forward. But we will also continue rehearsing new formats, with a hybrid programming that combines in person with virtual and offers new experiences, new ways of doing things, new opportunities, new ways of thinking, of creating and of being.

A Festival transformed into a book, a book which will be the Festival Gutun Zuria 2021/2020 Bilbao International Literature Festival Gutun Zuria. The Bilbao International Literature Festival resumes the essay as the focal point in an expanded edition in this 2020-2021 programme period that the Centre is carrying out and which will take place from 23 to 27 March. In 2020, this meeting was proposed as a collective essay in real time, ready to explore, from various formats, the different angles of the transformations which are taking place in society under a semblance of normality. It would tackle the essay beyond its condition as a literary genre, to treat it as a cultural process, a contemporary thought and, all things considered, as a model to take action in culture. Although the Festival could not be held, the project continued to be transformed into the “El ensayo empieza aquí” ("The essay starts here"), a book made up of articles by some of the authors who were due to take part in the last edition, and which is being presented at this year's event. "We decided to change the 2020 festival into a collective book and, at the same time, that book into the 2021 festival", explains Iván de la Nuez, Gutun Zuria consultant together with Iñaki Esteban and Beñat Sarasola. "We are looking at the position of eroticism in the organisation of everyday life or at the social

scar of difference; at gender and new social subjects; at the resistance to the usurpation of our data and at the questioning of contemporary rituals; at the edges of the Basque cultural and political experience, and at the challenges of the urgent change demanded by the world", he explains. Within its recently created collection of essays, “El ensayo empieza aquí”, published jointly with Caniche Editorial, includes the writings of Iván de la Nuez, Alexei Yurchak, Aingeru Epaltza, Aixa de la Cruz, Anjel Lertxundi, Iñaki Esteban, Mari Luz Esteban and Ixiar Rozas, Paul B. Preciado, Ernesto Castro, Javier Gomá, Marta Peirano, Katixa Agirre, Beñat Sarasola, Marta Rebón, Txomin Badiola or Damián Tabarovsky, each in their original language. This 2020 book and the 2021 festival likewise address "how these issues are written in a vision of the essay which overgrows its boundaries as a literary genre to become an operating mode in the world; as a text and texture, writing and performance, literature and experience, art and life. A festival which is an open book and at the same time an essay whose critical dimension is not content with recording a state of affairs, but furthers the mechanisms for its possible transformation."

Komikteka, the new space for creation around comics, is now open

Following the inauguration of Txikiteka, the new space for creativity, experimentation and both child and youth development, it is Komiteka´s turn to open. It is a special place to view the collection of more than 7,000 titles and take part in activities related to comic book publishing. It is also a place where artists and creators can develop their projects. Similarly, the Komiteka will host the International Comic Residency, which had to be postponed due to the pandemic. This is a collaborative project between La Maison de la littérature de Québec, Cité internationale de la bande dessinée et de l'image de Angoulême and Azkuna Zentroa. The three centres have joined

forces to host this programme that will allow three authors to develop their projects jointly at all three venues: Angoulême, Québec and Bilbao. Getting to know other centres, questioning their own spaces and discovering new ones will allow them to redefine their personal and creative world. Surprise packs Mediateka BBK has also launched a new option for lending bibliographic and audiovisual material that will surprise borrowers and familiarise them with new authors and different formats through monographic collections. These packs, for adults and children, come with titles like Al mal tiempo buena cara, Amor (im)posible, Forajidos de leyenda, Historia harrigarriak or Lurraren zaindariak . Each one is composed of a fictional novel, a comic book, a music CD and a film CD. The packs are located on the second floor of Mediateka BBK.

Workshop with Pernan Goñi. Activity developed in Komikteka

Mediateka BBK carries on with the activation of spaces as part of the transformation project which began last July. A twenty first century 'teka' aimed at artistic creation, learning and experimentation, framed both within the 2019-2023 Programme Project and Azkuna Zentroa´s mission as a connector between society and contemporary culture.

Mediateka BBK

An expanded programme which connects spaces, knowledge and public

In the first quarter of 2021 the programme will connects spaces, disciplines and projects from the exhibition hall or multiplex cinemas to Mediateka BBK, generating opportunities among the artists inhabiting the Centre via different projects and sharing them with the communities of publics. Even the building, turned into a stage for theatrical works, will be discovering some of its secrets. The Mediateka BBK has reinforced the selection of titles related to the strategic hubs of the Programme Project, and has complemented the main activities of the programme. The selection of contents is being carried out in close collaboration with artists and curators to define the guidelines and lines of work. This is the case of Achromatic. An immortal game. In order to produce the exhibition and its curatorial texts, curator Susana Blas read 4 books, 3 of which are part of the references offered by the Mediateka BBK:

10

Anthony Saidy, The Battle of Chess Ideas (published by Martínez Roca, Barcelona, 1973); David Shenk, The Immortal Game. A History of Chess (Turner Noema, Madrid, 2006); Eduardo Scala, El Juzgador de Ajedrez (Árdora Ediciones, Madrid, 2014); and Antonio Gude, Eso no estaba en mi libro de historia del ajedrez (Almuzara, Córdoba, 2018). These books are complemented with other chess related books among which stand out: The Immortal Game: A History of Chess or How 32 Pieces on a Carved Board Illuminated Our Understanding of War, Art, Science and the Human Brain by David Shenk (Taurus, 2019). This book analyses the importance of chess from ‘the immortal game’ played over 150 years ago in London and whose presence is articulated and covers a large part of Achromatic. An immortal game. In addition, in the Mediateka you can find books which have greatly influenced

the work of artist Mabi Revuelta, such as the science fiction novel Solaris, by writer Stanislav Lem, which is the literary reference of Pearls, the artist´s installation found in the exhibition hall. Marcel Duchamp, another of the hubs on which her exhibition is articulated, occupies an important place in the selection of references completing some of the artist’s own catalogues. Moreover, a new itinerary connecting Zinemateka to Mediateka BBK via the Pier Paolo Pasolini cycle has been created. The poet and essayist facet of the Italian film director, the themes of his film production, and how he has been an inspiration for artists from other disciplines, are part of the public programme of this monograph. In other cases, the new Centre itineraries arise from the encounter between the artists who inhabit the experimental space of Lantegia. Laboratory of Ideas. Camila Téllez presents her research Transición primaveral, a project in collaboration with artist Eszter Katalin.

programme for contemporary creation, and Un deseo de forma, curator Aimar Arriola’s project as an AZ associated researcher, where he delves into the relationship between queer perspectives and art in the Centre programme. Gutun Zuria, the Bilbao International Literary Festival to be held from 23rd to 27th March, proposes a split edition both in time and form, with last year’s edition converted into a book and with a hybrid programme, where once again words go beyond the pages of books to dialogue with the other artistic disciplines. The Alhóndiga building itself becomes a kind of easel for an artistic intervention to reveal some of its unknown nooks and crannies. Artist Amalia Fernández revisits some fragments of her previous works in these places. A site-specific project totally bonded with the place where it occurs, that becomes a key space for the dramaturgy of the work.

Mabi Revuelta

Acromรกtica. Una Partida Inmortal (Achromatic. An Immortal Game ) Curator: Susana Blas In co-production with Tabacalera. Promociรณn del Arte (Madrid)

18

Acromática. Una Partida Inmortal (Achromatic. An Inmortal Game) reviews the career of the artist Mabi Revuelta, while also showing her latest work Achromatic, produced for this exhibition. The exhibition is curated by Susana Blas, curator and historian of contemporary art. Articulated through the dramaturgy of chess, the tour begins with the Opening, a first space where the installation titled Naturaleza muerta con perlas negras (Still Life with Black Pearls) is located. It is a revised sculptural piece that sets the poetic tone of the exhibition. In Mid-game the various works that make up Achromatic unfold, inspired by one of the most artistic chess games in history: the Immortal game, played in 1851 between Adolf Anderssen and Lionel Kieseritzky. With this series, Mabi Revuelta takes chess and its norms as a reference to "through sculpture, cinema, contemporary dance, music and writing, create a story of the king of games beyond its limits, articulated through artistic, intellectual, warlike and vital metaphors." In the last space, the End of game, we find Linea de tiempo (Timeline), a summary of the artist's career based on the four eras of chess: romantic, scientific, hypermodern and dynamic.

«LIKE THE GAME PLAYED BY ADOLF ANDERSSEN AND LIONEL KIESERITZKY IN 1851, I CONSIDER THAT ART IS IMMORTAL BECAUSE IT CANNOT BE SEPARATED FROM CULTURE AND SOCIETY. FOR THIS REASON, I BELIEVE THAT IT IS A NECESSARY GOOD». Iván Gómez. La Prospección de Kairós. Chapter 1, openning of the exhibition

THE THIRD CHAPTER OF THIS DEVICE AIMS TO REVEAL THE PROJECT PROCESS ITSELF FROM ITS REMAINS.

20

La Prospección de Kairós (Kairos prospecting), Iván Gómez’s artistic project, inaugurates the third and final chapter on 28th January in the 1 (bat) espazioa of Lantegia. Laboratory of ideas. This project, understood as a methodological device for collaborative research revolving around between, has been articulated throughout 2020 via several chapters: Chapter 0, What is Denkraum? is an active essay developed by a Work Group; Chapter 1, Denkraum, is an exhibition created from that learnt during the previous months; and Chapter 2, Mnemosyne’s Lamp, is a series of conferences to diffract the issue of ‘between’. Chapter 3, Ruins of the moment, is presented as a kind of conclusion. A new Work Group rereads the symbolic material of the foregoing chapters, from artistic practice. As Iván Gómez states, «Chapter 3 ramps up the project title La Prospección de Kairós. This title uses the Latin active subject of prospectio, with reference to the set of works carried out when exploring the subsoil, aimed at discovering sites and possible pasts, likewise in reference to the exploration of future possibilities based on present evidence. Said action is attributed to the Greek god Kairós, whose name literally means ‘the right moment’. Unlike Chronus, who had a quantitative nature, this minor deity represents a qualitative nature. In this sense, we wish to attend to contemporary archaeology due to its interest, shared with art, in the system of aesthetics, and to its attempt to reveal a reality where the dichotomies of modernity dissolve and the ‘between’ is in play, rather than the opposites».

Mario Paniego proposes a review of the impact of advertising in public spaces through the exhibition Espacio públic(itari)o (public space/advertising space), which will be on display until 31 January in the Atrium of Cultures.

December 3, 2020 > January 31, 2021 Atrium of Cultures

Within the framework of Komisario Berriak, a Basque Government programme to support the curating practice and to foster the consolidation of new professionals in the art world, Mario Paniego invites us to contemplate the question as to why advertising is so widespread «that it is impossible to get away from the noise it produces in daily life. It robs a good part of the public and personal space from us. It fills us with stimuli and empties us of ourselves», he assures.

Free admission

Through this project, Mario Paniego presents the initiatives which have been set up in cities such as São Paulo, Wrocław or Grenoble, to restrict the use of advertising in public spaces and how this has been implemented.

Furthermore, the exhibition brings together the artistic and activist practice of the collectives and international artists Laura Marte, Jason Eppink, Maider López, Tony de Marco, Dobro and Vermibus, who work on this subject, either using the advertising media for their proposals or the public space to generate social reflection. The exhibition is completed with the pieces by Irene Cuesta del Cura and Eder Gutiérrez, selected through an invitation open to the Fine Arts students from the University of the Basque Country (UPV) and the IED KUNSTHAL to participate in the project.

JOSUNE URRUTIA'S PROPOSAL FOCUSES ON INDIVIDUAL AND COLLECTIVE PROCESSES IN ORDER TO RE-SIGNIFY THE VULNERABILITY OF BODIES AND THE ILLNESS AS AN EXPERIENCE

26

The Illustrator Josune Urrutia takes over from Pernan Goñi in the Fatxada Project. Design, illustration and comic. In her intervention on the main façade of the building, she proposes the three words of her work Breve diccionario enciclopédico ilustrado de MI cáncer, an autobiographical testimony of her process with the disease. «In the line of work related to my experience with cancer, I am interested in representing or re-imagining my own illness», explains the artist. With this gesture «while I occupy public space with an imaginary generally identified with the intimate, domestic or private, I reclaim another type of narratives and representations of experiences with the disease, far from the therapeutic or warlike metaphors which infiltrate ideas of winners vs. vanquished, heroes and heroines in our communities, and I propose embracing the uncertain and continuous process of living with the disease, imagining collective forms of mutual care and coexistence».

THIS TAKES PLACE WITHIN THE FRAMEWORK OF BABESTU, THE EXTRAORDINARY SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR CONTEMPORARY CREATION, AND A DESIRE FOR FORM, A PROJECT BY CURATOR AIMAR ARRIOLA THAT EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN QUEER PERSPECTIVES AND ART WITHIN THE CENTRE'S PROGRAMME.

The elements of this research focus on vampirism in relation to the queer, autobiography and memory of the body. With the arrival of her menstruation at the age of twelve, the end of childhood, and confronted with accepting her assigned gender, the artist began to play the role of vampire at an early age, assuming the behavior of a creature of the night.

Thursday, March 4 6:30pm Auditorium Free entrance until capacity is reached

In this investigation, the artist proposes a kind of remake of her childhood experience to reconnect and reconfigure her personal story of vampirism, through a series of interviews conducted by collaborating artist Eszter Katalin, in which she asks questions about the non-image, reflection, desire, the border, violence and fiction, all reappearing to be answered from performativity.

This presentation takes place within the dual framework of Babestu, the extraordinary support programme for contemporary creation, and A desire for form, a project by curator Aimar Arriola in which he investigates the relationship between queer perspectives and art within the Centre's programme.

CAMILA TÉLLEZ (Santiago, Chile, 1982) is a transdisciplinary artist who lives in Bilbao. In her recent artwork, she investigates different expressions of identity in the spaces she inhabits, as well as the invisible relationships with the audience and the public in different mediation proposals of places.

ESZTER KATALIN (Budapest, 1991) is an audiovisual artist who lives in Vienna and Bilbao. She practices her art from a queer and feminist perspective, questioning and stressing the socio-political representation of subjectivities. On Goldberg Variations / Variations

On Goldberg Variations / Variations

THIS CHOREOGRAPHIC PROPOSAL HIGHLIGHTS THE PARTICULAR MUSICALITY OF EACH PERFORMER AND THE RHYTHMIC AND DYNAMIC DIALOGUE BETWEEN THE GROUP AND THE SPACE.

30

The Catalan dance company Mal Pelo has been researching and creating its own language for 30 years. Its personal relationship with the work of German composer Johann S. Bach began with Bach, a show which toured the world in 2004. As a first step in a deep and complete immersion process, Bach Project is a trilogy focused on the study of J.S. Bach’s music and its relation to choreographic writing. On Goldberg Variations / Variations is a show based on the Goldberg Variations / Variations musical proposal of the French-American pianist and composer Dan Tepfer, who interprets the Goldberg Variations of J.S. Bach combined with his improvised variations on the same harmonies. On Goldberg Variations / Variations is a framework of language lines which weaves a fabric around the work of J.S. Bach. Dance, John Berger’s voice, some own texts, the manipulated multifocal sound of the soundtrack, live voice and video screenings, meld together to create Mal Pelo’s approximation to the universe of J.S. Bach. The choreographic proposal is committed to each interpreter’s specific musicality, and to the rhythmical dynamic dialogue between the group and the space. This piece is part of the Steve Paxton: Drafting Interior Techniques exhibition public programme, held at the Centre from February to September 2020. It was the first retrospective.

With the artistic direction of MARÍA MUÑOZ and PEP RAMIS, MAL PELO is a creative nucleus characterised by shared authorship and a trajectory based on researching movement and its dialogue with other disciplines. Since 1989 it has developed its own artistic language through movement, word, video, sound space and a special vision of stage space. For 30 years, Mal Pelo has upheld its interest in working with writers like John Berger and Erri de Luca, and creators like Baró d’Evel, Andrés Corchero, Steve Noble, Lisa Nelson, Niño de Elche, John Edwards, Alia Sellami, François Delarozière, Eduard Fernández, Leonor Leal, Marta Izquierdo, Faustin Linyekula, Cesc Gelabert, Carlota Subirós, Àngels Margarit, Lilo Baur, Cristina Cervià, Núria Font, Joel Bardolet, Nuno Rebelo and Agustí Fernández, among others. DIFFERENT SPACES OF THE THREE BUILDINGS OF AZ BECOME A STAGE FOR RETROSPECTIVE EXPOGRAPHY, WHERE SIX PERFORMERS WILL ACTIVATE SEVERAL WORKS IN MUSEUM INSTALLATION FORMAT, THROUGH WHICH THE PUBLIC WILL TRANSIT.

32

The Expografía Retrospectiva project, by the artist Amalia Fernández, reflects on the transposition of theatre-museum codes and on what occurs when the individual (the performer in this case) becomes the subject of the exhibition. This site-specific project is completely linked to the place where it takes place, «as a material and physical architecture, as a place of work and production of the work of art», construes Isabel de Naverán, Azkuna Zentroa Associated Researcher. This project is a series of object-situations, brought to life by performers, whose content is, in an installation version, the retrospective of the artist's performance pieces. Amalia Fernández has been reflecting for a long time through her already created pieces. The artist «resists in a certain sense the projective tendency that always goes forward in the production of new work to, instead, revisit materials worked on and see what is new in them», explains Isabel de Naverán. «It is a 'going backwards' which I had already explored before», she adds. To perform this project, Amalia Fernández carried out a residency from January 22 to February 6, inhabiting the three buildings of Azkuna Zentroa, full of corridors, hallways and numerous hidden corners, unknown to the public. Based on this residency and research of spaces, she decides which fragments from her previous pieces can be revisited in those places.

The sound artists Eraeran, Myriam Rzm, Matías Riquelme & Fernando Ulzión and Mudoh present their work as part of Hotsetan, Azkuna Zentroa’s experimental music and sound art programme that showcases local artists working with experimental sound and music through concerts. Eraeran (Miguel A. García) presents a series of short electro-acoustic pieces developed by the artist together with various local sound artists, conceived as a supplement to the creation and improvisation workshops. Their research focuses on collective sound creation using scores in varying degrees of freedom, from pure improvisation to performance, with musicians and artists using everything from traditional acoustic instruments to experimental electronic music.

The performer and sound experimenter Myriam RZM offers a live performance based on improvisation with self-made DIY/DIT sound tools. According to the artist, «Since 2018 I have been developing this live performance based on improvisation with DIY/DIT tools, adapted to my interest in performative sound, combined with fx pedals and feedback, in action/interaction with my own body in movement». The work of the duo composed of the Chilean cellist, Matías Riquelme, and the saxophonist from Bilbao, Fernando Ulzión, is based on experimentation with sound from the perspective of free improvisation. Each presentation is unique, with each piece inspired by the time and the setting. On this occasion they present their latest work, "La Trahison des Mots" (Sluchaj, 2020) Mudoh (Aitor Monje) is a combination of the Spanish word “mudo” (mute), related to the instrumental nature of his music and the letter “h”, which is silent. Mudoh is electronic ambient music that uses software, instrument capture, field sounds and digital editing. At the end of the day there will be a concert of improvised music based on the manipulation of a Spanish guitar that is amplified, percussed, rubbed and played with various soundproducing objects and analogically processed with electric guitar effect pedals.

Pier Paolo Pasolini. Poetry Made Film

A monographic cycle which covers some of the most signature titles of the Italian filmmaker The Zinemateka, with more than three decades of history in the city, maintains a stable programme of classic and more contemporary creation films in the Alhóndiga. It is one of the basic cornerstones of the Centre's audiovisual programme, with cycles that further the knowledge of the cinematographic and audiovisual language from works which are outside the commercial genre and market. Following the 50 gems in the history of cinema cycle, a selection of essential films, Zinemateka will squarely focus once again on the author's creations through a selection of films of the greatest directors of the history of cinema. During these ten years at Azkuna Zentroa, the Zinemateka has programmed retrospectives of great filmmakers such as John Ford, Pedro Almodóvar, Samuel Fuller, Michelangelo Antonioni, Buster Keaton, Dorothy Arzner, Theo Angelopoulos, Juan Antonio Bardem, John Huston, Charles Chaplin and Christine Vachon, which have been attended by over 60,000 people. The series now continues with the programme dedicated to Pier Paolo Pasolini, one of the most important filmmakers and poets of the second half of the 20th century. This is not the first time that the Zinemateka has programmed films by the Italian director. Mamma Roma (1962), one of his masterpieces, has been one of the "50 gems in the history of film" which has just ended; and Uccellacci e Uccellini (The Hawks and the Sparrows) (1966), was part of the El Contrato public programme, a project developed in collaboration with Bulegoa z/b between 2014 and 2015. The monographic series, programmed between January and March 2021, proposes an odyssey of the most signature titles of his extensive film production, screened in 35 mm.

DIGITAL CULTURES JAN.

Transbiótica Bilbao - Collective Creation Device (DCC) In January the project Transbiótica Bilbao - Device for Collective Creation begins at the Mediateka BBK, a research and action project that proposes public reflection on community life. Led by Pezestudio.org and Colaborabora, the Bilbao Collective Creation Device (DCC) consists of a platform that formulates specific questions to the people participating in the project, and subsequently generates some graphics from their responses. The combination of the different positions results in a graphic work that evolves with each contribution, and is the result of collective intelligence. This process of investigation through action tries to find an answer to the question, how are we going to live together? approaching it from different cultural practices: design, architecture, science and technologies (hard and soft). «Attending to the growing complexity of our time, marked by a systemic crisis and even more so in the current scenario, Transbiótica co-produces alternatives to explore what it means to “put life at the center". It proposes taking responsibility for the limits of the planet and of bodies, of rhythms and of the vulnerability of life», they explain. The project delves from ideas and emotions, into questions about Spaces, Human Relations and Biodiversity to visualize the audience's opinions regarding the project's views: ecological, collaborative, feminist, ecological, open source and experimental.

THROUGH AN ONLINE PLATFORM, THIS BILBAO COLLECTIVE CREATION DEVICE (DCC) PROPOSES PUBLIC REFLECTION ON HOW ARE WE GOING TO LIVE TOGETHER?

AZ ASSOCIATED RESEARCHERS

Aimar Arriola

Un deseo de forma (A desire for form) Research and public programme project

Manu Arregui. Con gesto afeminado (With an effeminate gesture) (2011). Still image from video

Within the framework of the Associated Researchers programme, the Centre has invited Aimar Arriola to reflect on the relationship between the queer perspective and art in Azkuna Zentroa's programme, through his project Un deseo de forma (A desire for form).

50

In the field of critical theory and social sciences, queer is described as a perspective that questions social conventions on masculinity and femininity, denaturalizing them and seeking a dialogue between the past and present in feminism, LGBTIQ+, anti-racism and

decolonial struggles. But what is queer in relation to art and its specificity? How to approach queer from the fields of form and the sensitive?

On the other hand, ephemeral and temporary productions by said artists (Ekintzak), such as a workshop, a projection, or a performance, in which face-to-face culture and meeting opportunities will be prioritized. Likewise, as Az Kidea, Arriola will carry out initiatives of a more sporadic nature, such as training sessions, reading workshops or specific interventions within other lines of the Centre's own programme. A desire for form kicked off on December 15, 2020 with a prologue in which the starting points and general intentions of the research were presented, and in which the artist Manu Arregui participated as the project's first guest. A key figure in the national audiovisual scene, Arregui's work focuses on the politics of the body and non-standard identities. The second guest of this project is the Chilean artist Camila Téllez.

Interlocution with local and international artists is the main methodology of this research, which is specified in two types of actions. On the one hand, conversations and other types of written exchanges (Orriak) periodically published on azkunazentroa.eus. Each of these digital publications will have a different graphic design, according to each artist's intentions.

developed within the double framework of A desire for form and Babestu, the extraordinary support programme for contemporary creation. The ephemeral production of Manu Arregui will be presented throughout the first half of 2021. As a recurring element, the public programme linked to A desire for form is a set by the commissioned artist Dogartzi Magunagoicoechea (Bilbao, 1991).

The exchanges in text format (Orriak) corresponding to Manu Arregui and Camila Téllez, who were the project's first two guests, will be published in digital format at the end of January and March, respectively, on the AZ website. As for the productions (Ekintzak), on March 4 there will be a screening of Spring Transition the project that Camila Téllez has

BABESTU, AN EXTRAORDINARY SUPPORT PROGRAMME FOR CONTEMPORARY CREATION

Babestu: projects in progress

Some of the artists chosen in the extraordinary Babestu call already inhabit the Lantegia space and are working on the creative processes of their projects

Karlos Martínez B.

«A beginning is like the body of a hole. How does it happen? Where does it start and finish? Can it be broken down? How long does it last? And, what does it become when it’s no longer what it was? This course beginning, likewise the beginning of the year, means a lot of new things for me, including my work as a resident in AZ Lantegi 1. I am finding my place in the space, institution, home, with the people living there, so I can locate the project within the space, institution, home, with the people living there».

Karlos Martínez B. Plan K. Gut

«This project has an audio-visual format, and we are working via the interview. Me, from the performance, and Eszter, from the camera. Regarding conceptual topics, this project is based on the idea of vampire from the queer perspective”, Camilla Téllez. “In this sense, we are working by choosing spaces and comprehending which place can offer us something. We have been intensely shooting the different AZ spaces in an attempt to encounter intimate space within the different architectures of the Centre, and finding those intimate spaces has been really complicated».

Irati Inoriza

«AZ has been driving practical research work in the Centre via the BABESTU residence for a month now. The day to day work at the studio facilitates both inter-relationship and motivation for the proposed collaborations. As the relationship conditions improve, I execute, for security, the foreseen schedule, taking notes with the Portugalete synchronised swimming team, and contrasting places where Lamiak have been ‘spotted’, linked to the images we turn our myths into, the transformation of our current civilisation».

Maider Aldasoro

«During this first stage at AZ, I find myself in the process of experimenting and researching my project. I am working on the creation of new ‘artefacts’ where I am trying to externalise common intimate desires, moved privately and under cover. In addition to the pieces already created, I am currently focused on a new creation in 2 person game format where one wins and the other loses. During this space and time, I am also working on the theoretical base of the project, reflecting on the shape it will take, from the performative to the theatrical».

PREMIERE

AZ ASSOCIATED ARTIST

Oscar Gómez Mata Makers

Óscar Gómez Mata is working on two projects as an AZ associated artist: the staging of Makers, a performance that combines philosophy, poetry and humour, a kind of survivor’s manual that tries to offer solutions for navigating reality; and the Catalogue of Wanderings, which will be expanded in January to include a piece on the Mediateka BBK. Investigating to make light

The piece emerges from the essential function of makers: investigation to make light. «We are detectives; we try to look for the feelings hidden under the feelings, to find a poetic solution to reality», explains Óscar Gómez Mata. The result is a show in which this «comic duo» tackles classic themes such as love, time and light, interspersing them with emotional humour, philosophy and poetry. They offer us a different take on everyday life during this fragile period in which the lines are blurred and uncertain. This show is along the same lines as the work produced by the L'Alakran, a company which the actor directs.

Juan Lloriente & Oscar Gómez Mata. Makers

Óscar Gómez Mata and the actor Juan Loriente continue their work on Makers, a performance that will premiere at the Centre in April. A process that was as «bumpy as everything else that happened in 2020», recalls Oscar Gomez Mata, which prevented it from being staged in October of last year, as planned. «We’ve had to cancel weeks of

rehearsals, move them to a different time and adapt our work to the ultimate Maker. We make the best of what we have», he assures.

New Wandering in the Mediateka BBK Along with Makers, Oscar Gómez is working with the artist Espe López on the Catalogue of Wanderings. Wandering is a practice in which, through the act of walking, one tries to establish connections between the urban landscape and the participant's inner life. For this project, they propose different wanderings for the purpose of observing and exploring everyday urban landscapes. Seguir sol, Siempre una cosa te lleva a la otra, La visión del/la turista, Silencio en casa, Detective and El Tiempo de Borges are the titles of the wanderings in this catalogue and they can be requested at Az Info, the information desk in the Atrium of Cultures. A new wandering will be added to the project in January focused on the Mediateka BBK: El hilo de Ariadna (Ariadne’s thread). A new itinerary to stimulate chance, synchronicity and serendipity, shifting thought in order to come face to face with the unknown.

RESIDENT COLLECTIVE

Kinu

Tractora Koop. E.

Usue Arrieta and Ainara Elgoibar, members of the artist cooperative Tractora Koop.E., created the Kinu project as a Resident Collective in Azkuna Zentroa. Kinu is a platform for programming, viewing and discussing audiovisual productions by artists. A quarterly meeting point in which an artist is invited to show his/her work in order to share with him/her a workshop to reflect as a group on this type of practice and its specificities. This project consists of three parts: Public presentation

Work group

After each public presentation, there is a session directed by the artist together with a stable work group (Lantaldea), whose dynamics are tailored to each guest. The Lantaldea#1 and Lantaldea#2 work sessions were focused on filming, with an audiovisual piece as a result. It was shot in 16mm, mounted on camera, developed and projected on the same day of the session. Lantaldea#3 revolved around the act of assembling a film from other materials, starting from the master class given by Sabine Groenewegen, and Lantaldea#4 which will be take place in the second quarter of 2021. Distirak

Finally, the project is completed with a text (Distirak) prepared by a person from the work group, in which the experience of each Lantaldea is collected. In the first session that took place in Azkuna Zentroa, the Distirak#2 text was written by the audiovisual artist Ander PĂŠrez. Distirak#3 was written by the artist Pablo Marte, and Distirak#4 which will be held in thesecond quarter of 2021.

Kinu#3.

The quarterly sessions begin with the screening and public presentation of the guest artist's work, followed by a brief discussion. Kinu began with a Kinu#1 pilot session with artist Elena Aitzkoa. In September, it started as a Resident Collective in AZ with the Kinu#2 session, with Maddi Barber as guest, and continued with Kinu#3 in November, with a session dedicated to the filmmaker

Sabine Groenewegen (The Hague 1985). It continued with Kinu#4 in the second quarter of 2021.

Through the Resident Collective programme we closely work together with groups in their work with artistic forms and contemporary culture from very diverse ways and viewpoints, favouring mutual complicity when it comes to articulating the cultural programme. 57

LANEAN. PARTISTIC PROCESSES SUPPORT PROGRAMME

Artoteka

Everyday Spaces for Art Starting 23 January, Artoteka, a platform for loans of contemporary art and mediation between artists and citizens, can be found in the exhibition space of Mediateka BBK as part of Lanean, the process support programme.

23 January > 11 April

The purpose of this artistic mediation project is to create new audiences for and publicise the work of local artists. The Artoteka platform loans works of art and mediates with creators to bring their art closer to everyday life and different audiences. The project emerged in response to the need to create new ways of disseminating and spreading contemporary art, of forming connections between contemporary art and society, and promoting new economic models for artists.

Artists taking part: Belén Cerezo, Helena Goñi, Juana García, Mawatres, Raisa Alava, Raquel Asensi, Raquel Meyers, Saioa Olmo, Tunipanea and Victoria Ascaso

How does it work? Artoteka includes a collection of works by ten local artists, designed specifically for the project, and demonstrates the diversity and richness of contemporary art creation at the local level. It is a hybrid collection with works from various disciplines (drawing, photography, painting, sculpture, video, etc.) that seeks to showcase themes of interest to the artists by linking art to other areas of knowledge.

Mediateka BBK Exhibition space (second floor)

Saturday, 23rd January: Presentation and guided tours 10.30am - 12:00pm Guided tours 12.00pm - 1.00pm Project presentation + activity: azkunazentroa.eus

The users select one or more of these works to borrow for their homes, workplaces or studios. The works are loaned for at least 3 months and the transporting and set-up process is supervised by the Artoteka team. For each loan, mediation activities are designed based on the space and the needs and interests of the users and artists. In this way, spaces are created that allow artists and communities to meet and reflect collectively on the works and their meaning.

The aim of Lanean. Program to support artistic processes is to support the production of artistic works, bringing them closer to public communities, either through the completed work or through creative processes. 58

Asier Irazabal y Hernán Quipildor La llave del alma (The Key to the Soul) Workshop

The work La llave del alma (The Key to the Soul) is the first visual expression of the Aita Project, carried out by the artists with the aim of sharing innovation and creativity. In this sense, La llave del alma proposes a symbolic language that can be used to develop the empathic ability and the technology of the soul through twelve symbols. Each symbol represents a primary concept like fear, possibility, space, hope, death, time, hate, love, consciousness, being, light or meaning. The idea is to use these symbols to access a language of pure meaning to understand each other better as human beings. According to the artists, «the creative process is always a dialogue between the work that comes from a place where there are no words and the act of sharing that work with concepts that summarise it. This project is a proposal for a way of understanding ourselves, an integrating proposal which allows us to understand that one and the other, whatever the other is, are the same. It is not enough to understand it, understanding only goes so far, but at some point a key has to be turned».

Josune Urrutia Asua Así me veo Workshop

The artist Josune Urrutia Asua will lead the workshop Así me veo within the framework of the Fatxada Project. Design, illustration and comics. Starting from her book with the eponymous title, she proposes approaching the selfportrait as a process of self-knowledge and experiencing viewing oneself through drawing. To do so, she explains how «it is necessary to give yourself permission to experiment, play, discover and be surprised in this process». Así me veo is a proposal that invites observation, exploration, reflection and action in relation to the idea of the self-portrait. «It is also the result of an investigation process and deep experimentation carried out in the first person. As John Berger says “Drawing is not only measuring and arranging on paper, it is also receiving. (...) The drawn image contains the experience of looking», explains the artist.

The workshop is open to anyone interested in the subject as well as drawing, without the need to have any knowledge of this technique.

Leire Urbeltz

La probabilidad de un entre (The Probability of a Between) Workshop Illustrator Leire Urbeltz proposes the workshop La Probalibilidad de un Entre under the Fatxada Project. Design, Illustration and Comic framework. Neither art nor illustration, this is a laboratory aimed at addressing a space ‘between’ as a place for creation starting with a drawing. In a world which seems to be built on a base of exclusions, La Probalibilidad de un Entre proposes a gap from where you can hug the insecurity and confusion to experiment a hypothetical expanded illustration. Therefore, the aim is to question the language of illustration itself, understanding it as an object susceptible to create an immersive space which shelters us. In other words, to explore its installation condition beyond its applications, based on the integration and appropriation of devices unrelated to the museum or publishers in order to play, display and make our work visible.

Leire Urbeltz

In her work, LEIRE URBELTZ explores the limits of what she calls expanded illustration. She expands both formally and conceptually towards the elimination of reduction formulas which dodge the complexity of contemporary creation. Thus, we can locate Leire Urbeltz’s work in a state of ongoing movement. In other words, it is never stabilised no matter its possibilities.

The publication focuses on the situation prior to Ricardo Bastida’s Alhóndiga Municipal project and the architect’s interest in developing the city of Bilbao. It also reviews the projects and renovations carried out after it was closed in the 1960s, culminating in Phillipe Starck’s proposal and the creation of what is now Bilbao’s Society and Contemporary Culture Centre.

Should you wish to purchase either of these two books in advance, you can request one or both by sending us an email with your details to info@azkunazentroa.eus and we will contact you in that regard. 66

An accessible space and programme "If you don't need them, you might not notice them, but if you do, they're there. The phrase from the Curator Clare Barlow reflects what an accessible space and programme should be. Culture is a right and ensuring its universal access is a responsibility for centres like Azkuna Zentroa, fostering and implementing integrated measures within the development of the cultural and creative processes carried out at the Centre. And this does not only refer to the need to have a space free of architectural barriers, but likewise to sensory barriers which can restrict participation. The Centre has audio guides to listen to the exhibitions, sound loops so as not to miss out on any detail of the cinema programme, easy-to-read programmes to enjoy literature from all capacities, guided visits in which not only sight but also touch is used...

68

Similarly, since its opening ten years ago, other measures have been implemented such as furniture and fittings changes in certain rooms, installation of new lifts in the Physical Activity Centre or the improvement of online and off line communication. Accessibility has likewise been a priority in the recent refurbishment of the Mediateka BBK. From among these measures, the improvement of the lighting in certain points of the Atrium is worthy of mention. Azkuna Zentroa works on the continuous improvement of the space and the programme. The Centre is currently engaged in obtaining the ISO 17001 Standard, the European standard which certifies the universal accessibility management system so as to ensure that all audiences have a rewarding experience, can participate in the creative processes and experience, share and enjoy culture on equal terms.
