I

want to thank everyone for the congratulations on the Arizona Billiards Hall of Fame induction. Over 20 years ago, I wanted to create an online version of this very newspaper. That is how AzBilliards was created and I can easily say that if it weren’t for pool here in Arizona, I would not be where I am right now. We had a great pool community then and with the hard work of a lot of people, we have an even better one now. We really are lucky to have the community that we have here in Arizona, and it is all about the great people who are a part of it. Tournament directors, room owners and all of the players who make up this community are the ones who deserve all of the kudos for what we all have here. One of the new members of our great community is Ramil Azemat with Arizona Snooker Academy in Chandler. I’d like to welcome him to the pages of the paper. Check out his ad this month and get out to see what he has put together for the community.

Store Wins AWBT Tucson Event THE ARIZONA WOMEN’S BILLIARD TOUR (AWBT) WAS IN TUCSON FOR STOP FIVE ON AUGUST 24TH - 25TH WITH A FIELD OF 42 PLAYERS SETTING A NEW RECORD FOR ATTENDANCE AT THE ANNUAL TUCSON STOP AT POCKETS.

T

he random draw placed 5 of the top ladies in the very top of the bracket, which resulted in early trips to the B side for some of our stronger players. Justine Bishop came through that side of the bracket to play for the hot seat. Meanwhile, the bottom half of the bracket saw San Diego’s Rae Evans and newcomer Barbara Berg battling through to play Justine. Ultimately it was Barbara and Justine playing for the hot seat, and Justine won the match 6-2. After a 3rd round loss to Sara Miller, Bernie Store got to work on the backside doing what she does and sending ladies home left and right until she got to the final match. The finals would be a single race with Bernie going to 9 and Justine to 8. Bernie got an early 3-1 lead on Justine, but Justine didn’t want to let Bernie out that easily. Justine kept firing back and reached the hill first, at 7-7. Bernie won the next rack to make it hill-hill. A miss by Bernie on the 8 ball left it hanging in the pock-

et, and it was deep in there. So deep that Justine’s rail-first attempt failed and left Bernie with ball-in-hand. Congrats to Bernie for her first place win and $650. Justine took home $325 for second and Barbara Berg took 3rd in her first-ever AWBT appearance. Nineteen ladies came back on Sunday for the second chance event. Amanda Pulley won the hot seat and Audrey Chua met her in the finals. Audrey won the match 5-3. Good shooting to both of you! The Balls Only 10 Ball tournament had a strong field of 20 players. The Hardest Thing On Earth By Carl STEWART BCA Certified Instructor

T

he answer is none of the above. The hardest thing on earth in the game of pool is for a person to lose with a smile on their face. If you go out to You Tube and watch the CSI Ten Questions video with Efren Reyes https://youtu.be/0eLhkLgfInw, the greatest player in the world tell us he likes a player that loses and is still happy. Wow, when I grew up in the pool hall, I was told “if you like losing, that makes a loser”. How many players that you know blowup or get mad or grumpy after a loss? Does that take the fun out of the win for you? All of these actions fall under the old rule of thumb – I cannot control how other people act I can only control how I react. What you are seeing when a player blows up is self-doubt and that is the worst thing for anyone’s game in any sport. We ALL are going to have bad days and we ALL are going to lose. A local player and cue maker pointed out Pocket Billiards is one of the only sports we can lose or win without even getting a chance to perform. All other sports are designed to provide the other team or player a chance to engage. According to Dr. Patrick Cohn Harsh, criticism hurts billiards players’ confidence, but the effect

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF WHEN I SAY, “THE HARDEST THING ON EARTH”? WELL OF COURSE THIS IS A BILLIARDS PAPER SO IS IT A SHOT LIKE THE JUMPSHOT, KICKS, BANKS, ETC. of harsh criticism is doubled when it comes from within the athlete’s own mind. Harsh self-criticism is the quickest way to shatter confidence. Many times, billiards players describe themselves as being their own biggest critic. This mindset is viewed by some in a positive light meaning that this type of athlete pushes themselves to be perfect and nothing less is sufficient. Unfortunately, harsh self-criticism becomes an endless loop of negative self-talk that pulls an athlete downward rather than lifting up their performance to new standards. Self-criticism never pushes an athlete towards excellence. Harsh self-criticism sends the message that you are not good enough and, no matter what you accomplish, that is not good enough either. When you are a perfectionist and have high expectations, you judge your performance as never good enough, which only hurts confidence. When the goal becomes perfection, you lose sight of the main objective in billiards. Unforced errors and mistakes overshadow any progress or success. The truth is that harsh self-criticism sends a negative message to yourself that hurts billiards performance.

Assessing your performance requires some degree of objectivity. Although you cannot be fully objective, you can step back from your performance and take a look at potential ways to improve your play rather than demoralize yourself by highlighting all your mistakes. The 3 Components of Objectivity: 1. CREDIT – What did you do well? There are always some positive takeaways from every performance. Give yourself credit for those successes, even minor ones. 2. MISSES – What didn’t go well? This requires the greatest amount of restraint and objectivity. Refrain from berating yourself and look at your performance through a coach’s eye.

By Roger Long

I’M THE TYPE OF GUY WHO LIKES TO GET TO THE TRUTH OF A MATTER – ANY MATTER – AND WHAT I INTEND TO SHARE WITH YOU IN THIS SERIES IS THE TRUTH. WELL, AT LEAST IT’S THE TRUTH AS FAR AS I SEE IT. BUT IF YOU DON’T LIKE MY TRUTH, FEEL FREE TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN TRUTH.

In the decades since the two-piece pool cue was first invented there has been little change in its physical dimensions. The standard length is 58 inches – only one inch longer than the original standard length – and the standard weight range is still 18 to 21 ounces. And with the average shaft diameter still being around 13mm and the butt being roughly 1.25 inches, it

Treat yourself like you would treat a best friend. When a friend asks you about their performance, you wouldn’t berate or belittle them. Be objective when evaluating your performance. Again, treat yourself with the same respect as you would your best friend. Ask yourself: “What would the most positive coach tell me in this moment?” This question will help you step outside of the emotion and be more objective with your game.

Losing should be part of the plan for yourself and you should strive to understand that the best in the world lose games, matches and even complete tournaments. The trick is to learn from every shot, game and 3. PLAN – What do you need to tournament entered. You can even do differently to improve? The Truth About Cues, Part One ll makers of cues costing over a certain amount of money think their way of building a cue makes for the best hitting cue on the market. And they’re probably right. That is, so long as their customers agree with them.

different weights) and were then joined to the shaft-ends by a method called a full-splice. A “fullsplice” is one where the ends of the two woods have long, tapered grooves and fingers cut into them so that they fit together to form a strong, interlocked connection between the two. This splicing method also allows for a smooth vibrational transition (less shock) from the shaft-end to the butt-end when playing. In explanation of that phenomenon, I’ll offer this: whenever a cue strikes a cue ball, a longitudinal vibration is set up that travels from the tip to the butt. The frequency of the vibration in any cue will depend on the materials and method of construction of the cue. And it is this longitudinal vibration that players refer to as the “hit” of the cue. In my next article, I’ll discuss some of the different materials and construction methods that affect the hit of cues.

APA Teams Vegas Bound APA HAS COMPLETED THE YEAR LONG QUEST FOR TEAMS SEEKING A SPOT AT THE WORLD POOL CHAMPIONSHIP. OVER TWO WEEKENDS IN JUNE APA HELD ITS ANNUAL “ROAD TO VEGAS” SERIES OF TOURNAMENTS IN 8 BALL, 9 BALL, JACK & JILL SCOTCH DOUBLES, 8 BALL DOUBLES, 9 BALL DOUBLES, LADIES ONLY, MASTERS AND CAPTAIN’S ONLY TEAMS TO DETERMINED WHICH TEAMS QUALIFIED TO GO.

T

eams and players that qualify to play in these National events are compensated for attending with rooms and entry fees paid for their events, and are given expense money to go along with it. Each team in the APA pool league is comprised of both higher skill level players along with lower skill level people. Each team must stay within a maximum team handicap number with their combined players. This prevents any one team from building what would be considered a ‘Super Team’. Each team must compete with the same level of competitive players. The advantage of this system is that any level of skilled player can compete and win. APA makes it possible for players who are just learning to play the game to be able to go to Las Vegas and compete on the national level. In fact, any team that goes to Vegas MUST have one or two lower skill level players on their team so that the higher skilled players can play.

Our National event is held at the Westgate Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas Nevada. Locally, APA Phoenix Metro pays out over $90,000 per year to its players here in the valley and the National tournaments pay out over $1.6 Million per year. With 260,000 players worldwide in the APA, it is by far the biggest pool league on the planet. APA just completed the last two events this past June to qualify the 8 Ball and 9 Ball teams that have been competing for the past year. The final Tournaments were held at Main Street Billiards on the Diamond Bar Box tables. The following is a complete list of players and their teams that will be representing Phoenix at the World Pool Championship in Las Vegas this August!

The 2-day format started on Saturday with group round robin play, where the 24 teams were separated into 6 groups of 4, with each team playing the 3 teams, head-to-head, within their group. As the day progressed, teams played frequently to hill-hill scenarios, making for some long, but exciting play. Pocket Poolers on their very first bid to a championship, joined Ballizsticks, Undecided and Main Event in the final four. As the evening wound down, Undecided and Ballizsticks ended up head-to-head

DARTS: Play like a Pro - Avoid Bogies Steel Tip OVERVIEW: IN THE LAST ISSUE, WE COVERED AVOIDING BOGIES FOR SOFT-TIP N01 PLAYED WITH A FULL- BULL AND MASTER OUT. WE WILL NOW ADDRESS STEEL-TIP 501 BOGIE AVOIDANCE TARGETING.

W

hile many players spend hours on their perfecting their “throw,” few spend any time on this part of the mental game. On the world stage, the professionals finish a leg of 501 in five turns; they have learned not to give away anything. Every competitive darter understands how important it is to win the cork. This gives the starting player three more darts to win the leg or a match given alternating starts. Less understood is that a player ending a turn on a bogey remaining-score (RS) assures the opponent that they have six more darts to win. This reduces the pressure on the opponent and gives them a mental boost; this is exactly the opposite of what is wanted.

dation for the aspiring player to learn and practice each successive range.

The tradeoff to maximizing points is to always an attempt set up a statistically superior RS.

To make learning more manageable, consider this. First, the player need only learn the ranges appropriate to their level of play and this begins with the range 2-40. For ranges above RS 100 the player need only memorize the RSs where the T20 is not targeted. This vastly reduces what to memorize.

Knowing the score after each dart is played eliminates doubt and allows the player to maintain their rhythm-of-throw. This reduces the chances that working-memory will overpower procedural-memory negatively affecting marksmanship.

Do not be intimidated by the table as the explanation will simplify a complex subject difficult to discuss otherwise.

Play the odds: Do not do any alternative targeting to avoid a bogie until compelled to do so.

When avoiding a bogie in steel-tip you have to give up pointing potential whereas in soft-tip you have a chance to gain points. If you do not think even onepoint can matter, try finishing a RS 61 versus a RS 60 with three or possibly only two darts-in-hand (DIH). Or, try finishing RS 170 versus RS 171. Anyone given extra points and more six darts to win a leg of n01 should take it. This is about players training themselves not to give their opponent this edge. Winning the diddle is a matter of physical skill and avoiding a bogie at the least point cost is the development of mental skills. Bogies and bogey-traps: The seven steel-tip bogey RSs are: 159, 162, 163, 165, 166, 168, and 169. They are only of consequence when you finish a turn and leave them as a RS. Imagine starting a turn with RS 349 in an important match, scoring 180, and ending up on the bogey 169. As shown in the table there are the bogies and the bogey-traps. Knowing what RSs are bogies or bogie-traps is important but of little use in avoiding them. They are to be avoided with the prior dart(s) as shown in the Bogie Avoidance Table (BAT) for steel-tip. It is important to understand that what to do depends on the RS and the DIH. Published out-charts: Most published finishing charts usually just cover the RSs 61 thru 170 and provide only one alternative when there might be many and they have no information of what to do if you end up on a bogie. They are and limited and yet this is how most players learn to play n01; 501 being the bedrock of the international darting community. Bogey avoidance table (BAT): The table is a summary of alternative targeting to avoid a bogie for illustrative purposes. The appropriate targeting is imbedded in the book “DARTS: Play like a Pro” Optimal Targeting Tables (OPTs), along with the ranges’s targeting nuances. The detailed range tables also identify when a player may judiciously target the bull (for RS 185 with 1-DIH) to or when to target an alternative to the T20 (T19 for RS 173) to setup a preferred RS. The idea is to provide a tool to learn each range in a progressive manner, with each range building a foun-

Bogie avoidance targeting (aka “switching”): Avoiding a bogie takes some skill but it is very manageable. The following is an example of avoiding the bogie RS 159. BAT (1) RS 179: The player has reduced the score to 179 and has 1-DIH. Targeting the T20 but scoring the probable S20 will leave the bogie RS 159. Targeting the T19 and scoring a S19 will leave the RS 160 and the T19 will leave RS 122. The player gave up one point to set up a finish avoiding the bogie and possibly three points if they scored the so much the better T19 (versus the T20). So, one dart away from a possible bogie, switch targets. Simple right? Memorize the RSs in this column and switch to a T19 or T18, (or the bull in some cases) to avoid a possible bogie while maximizing your pointing potential. There, you have mastered avoiding bogies at the least cost in one of the most important ranges above 170. BAT (2) RS 199: In keeping with the mantra not to do any alternative targeting unless you have to, ignore this column. As an example, With a RS 199 and targeting the T20, scoring a S20 will leave RS 179. And as shown in the preceding, if the player that has only 1-DIH left they can avoid the bogie with the last dart by targeting the T19. That was easy. BAT (3) RS 219: Ignore this column because with 1-DIH and a RS 219 as the example, you are screwed. Any alternative will leave a bogie or a score above 170. Score as many points as possible with the last dart and live with it. Now you know. BAT (4) RS 239: With 2-DIH and the RS 239 the player should target the T19 because the S20 would leave the above RS 239 and no finish setup possible with the last dart. Note that one of the two darts has to be a triple or the bull to leave a finish. BAT (5-16): Things get more complex in some cases as the examples cover each additional range (BAT 5-16). And, there is much more information in the detailed OPT range tables than shown in the BAT. Mental Scorekeeping: A competitive dart player learns to keep track of their score and be aware of the darts in hand to avoid bogies. For steel-tip, mental scorekeeping is important to know when to avoid a bogey and when to judiciously target the bull or an alternative to the T20.

PAGE 18

Any alternative dart to maximize scoring potential may end up missing the intended target and that then becomes a different game situation. Summary: By systematically memorizing the OPTs in a progressive approach, the player will select and methodically practice the finishing and bogey avoidance options they have chosen. This will lead to confidence as the doubt of what to target is erased; there will be no second-guessing as to whether a better option exists. Some may argue that avoiding a bogie is unimportant because they cannot take out a RS 170, as an example. The counter argument is, “Give yourself a chance.” Further, when does a player learn to avoid a bogie? As always, watch the professionals on the world stage and learn from them. They are the only ones truly qualified to teach anyone the game. That said, an education and understanding what to look for is important. And often, the announcers in a televised broadcast may comment on a misplayed dart or say “they got away with one” when the player scores a triple. A player with good marksmanship skills and good knowledge of targeting options has an advantage over a player with similar marksmanship skills but a limited knowledge of the setup of and the finishing options.
