one of the most expensive parts of a trip for a pool tournament. Here are some tricks see listed below • Shop at SAMs COSCO get bulk prices • Plan on getting to your room and rest and eat • Think about what you buy (not all junk) • The fridges in the rooms are not that big but ice is free – bring a large cooler • Do not drink alcohol – until you win or are out of the event Let me finish up with a great example of preparing and focus. That was last year’s 2018 Mosconi cup held in Europe. Tyler Styer, a rookie that year, went over to Europe 2 weeks early to settle in and adjust to the time change, culture and foods offered over there. IMO, he won the cup for the team USA last year when he beat Niels ‘The Terminator’ Feijen. Niels has pool cues older than Tyler and has 1000% more experience and wins under his belt, but Tyler did let that negativity get in his way. He focused on his preparation and a positive mindset enabled him to play his best match of his life so far. In closing, I like to say I can beat anyone in the event, and I can also lose to anyone in the event too.

G

aff lost to Gary Metoxin in the final eight in the winner’s side, before Metoxin lost to the eventual hot-seat holder Ernest Hampton. On the one loss side, Gaff had wins over Mary Helen Mondragon, Sara Sorg and Robert Livingston to earn what looked like a rematch with Metoxin in the final four. Instead of that rematch Gaff faced Ed LaRue, who had just eliminated Metoxin in 5th place. The opponent didn’t matter though, as Gaff went on to defeat LaRue and then Bernard Benson, who

APA Toys for Tots A BIG SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE ARIZONA POOL PLAYERS THAT SUPPORTED THE ANNUAL ‘HELPING SANTA AND MRS. CLAUS TOY DRIVE” 8 BALL TOURNAMENT HELD ON DECEMBER 15TH AT BULLSHOOTERS.

I

t couldn’t have been the success it was without all of you that participated. 40 players from all over the valley participated in this year’s charity event and everyone had a great time playing pool and enjoying time with their friends. Besides the players having a great time, the young kids from around Arizona who are less fortunate than the rest of us will have a little merrier Christmas this year. We received a truckload of toys to deliver to the charity. Helping Santa and Mrs. Claus Toy Drive was previously the Toys for Tots tournament that was held at Bullshooters for the last 11 years. The name of the tournament was changed this year so that we could deliver the toys to kids here local-

They were both on hand Sunday afternoon for pictures and even playing in the tournament. Congratulations goes out to Alex DeDora for his first place finish. MOST OF US ARE PRETTY PLEASED WHEN WE WIN A TOURNAMENT. EVEN A SECOND PLACE FINISH IS PRETTY FUN. FOR OUR JANUARY PLAYER OF THE MONTH, TWO WINS AND A SECOND PLACE FINISH IN DECEMBER, SEEMS LIKE JUST ANOTHER MONTH OF POOL.

Arizona Billiard & Dart News In the 2000's the pool scene was AWESOME in Florida... I used to run 2 Tournament's a week with 5060 players & there was an Amateur Tour with a lot of Strong Players & a pretty strong pro tour... AZ is pretty strong because we're all in one place for the most part, where as it's spread out over Florida where you might have to drive 3-8 hrs to go to a good Tournament. For the most part though, I like AZ better for how we come together as a family when someone is in need of help!!!! When did you make the transition from winning Tournament's to running them: Funny question.... I've always played & won Tournament's (still do :) ) but I started running Tournament's back in '91 when a guy named Ralph Curry ran tournaments at Click's Billiards in Orlando. He showed me how to set them up & said they're pretty easy to run once you do the draw, they pretty much run themselves lol. Where did the idea for the new 565 & Under tour come from?

DANIEL UNDEFEATED IN TUCSON

FORTY TWO PLAYERS CAME OUT TO BAREFOOT BOB’S IN PRESCOTT VALLEY ON DECEMBER 7TH - 8TH TO PAY TRIBUTE TO BOB SOTO AND TO COMPETE IN THE BOB SOTO MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT.

APPARENTLY BORED WITH WINNING TOURNAMENTS IN THE PHOENIX AREA, TIM DANIEL TREKKED OUT TO TUCSON ON NOVEMBER 30TH, WHERE HE WENT THROUGH A FIELD OF 50 PLAYERS TO WIN THE POCKETS FARGO 10-BALL TOURNAMENT.

his event combined 9-Ball on the 9’ tables with 8-ball on the 7’ tables for a unique tournament experience. Saturday play brought the field down to just eight players with Ronn Rutan, Robert Berry, Andy Davis and Alex Halenka on the right side of the board, and Linda Gaines, Anthony Begay, Les Webb and Willie Harris on the one loss side. Berry and Davis got Sunday started with wins over Rutan and Davis, while Begay and Harris kept their tournament hopes alive with wins over Gaines and Webb. Rutan would be the first Sunday player to get comfortable on the one-loss side as he eliminated Begay and Harris.

It didn’t seem probable early in the event, but it was Norton and Gresh facing off in their second finals in two days and while it was Norton who won on the 15th, Gresh avoided Norton by staying it was Gresh with the 4-3 win in on the winner’s side and taking the first set on this night for first the hot-seat with 2-0 wins over place. NORTON HOLDS OFF MCCREARY FOR KITTY’S WIN

NORTON NEARLY UNBEATABLE AT KITTY’S

TONY NORTON AND JOE MCCREARY TOOK ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PATHS TO THE FINALS OF THE 615 & UNDER 9-BALL EVENT AT KITTY’S ON DECEMBER 22ND, BUT THEY BOTH MADE THE MOST OF THE IT.

ASIDE FROM A SMALL STUMBLE IN HIS FIRST MATCH OF THE DAY, TONY NORTON WAS UNTESTED ON HIS WAY TO ANOTHER WIN AT KITTY’S FOR THE 615 & UNDER 8-BALL EVENT ON DECEMBER 23RD.

N

orton took a quick direct route to the finals as he cruised to the hot-seat, not letting an opponent win more than two racks against him. His 5-2 win against Chuck Sowers and his 6-2 win over Ray Ryan for the hot-seat were his closest matches.

Randell Moore and a 4-2 win over Ray Ryan in the semi-final match.

All of those games on the one loss side must have gotten McCreary in stroke, because he came back and handed Norton his first loss of the day in the first set of the finals 3-4, but it was Norton who had the final victory with a 5-2 scoreMcCreary on the other hand, took line in the second set. the scenic route. A first round 4-3 COMPLETE PAYOUTS: loss to Frank Parker left McCreary with a long path to the finals, 1st Tony Norton $180 but he followed that path with a 2nd Joe McCreary $70 22-8 record through the one loss 3rd Ray Ryan $30 side that included a 3-0 win over 4th Randell Moore $30

Joe McCreary and Tony Norton

N

orton’s first round match with Gino Sanchez went hill-hill (2-1), but that rack against Sanchez would be the last rack that Norton lost all day. Norton had 2-0 wins over Dennis Winkler and then Dan Lorett for the hot-seat, and after a 2-1 win over Vinny Rider, it was Lorett

3rd Place Finisher Vinny Rider

who came out of the one loss side to face Norton in the finals. That final match, like the last two Norton matches, was a 2-0 Norton win for first place. COMPLETE PAYOUTS: 1st Tony Norton $50 2nd Dan Lorett $30

FREEZERS 3-WAY 8-BALL SPLIT BRAMIN BROWN WENT THROUGH A FIELD OF FORTY SIX PLAYERS WITHOUT A LOSS TO EARN A SHARE OF A THREE WAY 1ST/2ND/3RD PLACE SPLIT IN THE 515 & UNDER 8-BALL EVENT AT FREEZERS ON DECEMBER 15TH.

B

rown discovered that he had forgotten his cues, but Mike Nevarez came to the rescue and loaned one of his cues to Brown to compete with. Nevarez might have wanted to rethink the gesture after Brown sent him to the one loss side in his 3rd match of the day. After the win over Nevarez, Brown went on to defeat Roselyn Parks 5-0 and then John Hardy 5-2 for the hot-seat. Chris Baginski had lost his third match of the day to Parks, but he made the most of his trip to the one loss side with wins over Dawn Polotto, Nevarez, Cathy Kelley and Parks to make his way to the semi-final match against

Hardy. Due to the late hour, all three players agreed on a three way split with Baginski taking the lion’s share of the prize money due to him being the only player left in the side pot. COMPLETE PAYOUTS: 1st Bramin Brown $575 1st John Hardy $325 1st Chris Baginski $910 4th Roselyn Parks $150 5th Cathy Kelley $200 5th Paul Wuerfel $200 7th Mike Nevarez $80 7th Alejandro Teyechea $80 9th Dawn Polotto $40 9th Leandrea Gaff $20 9th Brandon Langan $20

COURTRIGHT GETS BY BENALLY FOR FREEZERS WIN ONE RACK SEPARATED THEM ALL DAY, BUT THAT WAS ENOUGH TO GIVE 1ST PLACE TO WILLIAM COURTRIGHT OVER TIM BENALLY AT THE FREEZER’S 565 & UNDER 9-BALL EVENT ON DECEMBER 1ST.

B

enally had a longer path to the hot-seat match, with wins over Pete Barrios, Jill Watson and Mike Chapa. Courtright got to the hot-seat match with one less match, taking advantage of a first round bye before beating John Marquis and Charlie Mills. The match for the hot-seat belonged to Courtright with a 5-6 win over Benally.

Benally found Chapa waiting for him on the one loss side. After the loss to Benally, Chapa had beaten

Mike Ramirez and Mills to earn another shot at Benally. That second shot would look a lot like the first one though, with Benally scoring another 7-5 win over Chapa. The finals went one set with Courtright scoring a 5-3 win over Benally to take first place. COMPLETE PAYOUTS: 1st William Courtright $310 2nd Tim Benally $130 3rd Mike Chapa $90

THREE WAY THANKSGIVING EVE SPLIT AT FREEZER’S

BROWN AND SBELGIO SPLIT AT FREEZER’S

BY VIRTUE OF BEING IN THE HOT-SEAT, JOEY BARRERA GOT THE BIGGEST PIECE OF A THREE WAY SPLIT AT THE FREEZER’S THANKSGIVING EVE 10-BALL EVENT ON NOVEMBER 27TH.

THINGS WEREN’T LOOKING GOOD FOR VINCE SBELGIO WHEN THE FREEZER’S UNDER 700 9-BALL EVENT GOT STARTED ON DECEMBER 1ST, BUT HE WOULD GET THE LAST LAUGH BY THE END OF THE DAY.

B

arrera took the hot-seat with wins over Jeff Nelson, Eric Olivieri, Mike Adams, Josh Lortz and Justin Turner. As fate would have it, the match with Turner would be his last one of the night.

Tim Benally, but the late hour and the large number of players (27) forced the final three players into a three way split at tournament’s end.

On the one loss side, Brian Brown was looking for a rematch against Turner, after dropping a quarter final match to Turner 5-1. Brown had wins over Jaye Succo and

belgio’s tournament started with a lopsided 7-1 loss to Greg Brown, but he took the loss in stride and started down the long road on the left side of the board. Sbelgio put together a five match winning streak on the one-loss side, eliminating Tommy Dilorenzo, Gil Franco, Ray Robles, Abdulwahab Aldelaimi and Danny. Teurman. After his first round win over Sbelgio, Brown cruised into the hot-seat with wins over Aldelaimi

oth players took advantage of first round byes before winning two tough matches to get to the hot-seat match. Barrera has wins over Tommy Dilorenzo and Justin Turner, while Robles beat Avery Reece and Jaden Brock. That lead to the first Barrera/Robles battle, with Barrera scoring the 7-2 win.

S

COMPLETE PAYOUTS: 1st Joey Barrera $500 2nd Ray Robles $190

AFTER TWELVE HOURS OF PLAY, VINCE SBELGIO AND JAYE SUCCO AGREED TO A SPLIT OF FIRST AND SECOND PLACE AT THE FREEZER’S 540 & UNDER 10-BALL EVENT ON DECEMBER 22ND.

belgio stayed on the right side of the board, with wins over Bob Hillen, Ed Watkins, Bob Ferrell and Spencer Downs. Succo, on the other hand, dropped her second match of the day to Hillen and had a slightly more uphill path to the finals. Succo had wins on the left side of the board against Julian Perez, Ed Watkins and Caleb Uptain before getting her revenge against Ferrell 6-4. She would only need a win over Downs to make the finals,

Robles built confidence with his 7-4 win over Reece on the one loss side and then handed Barrera a 7-1 loss in the first set of the finals. That left both players one more set to determine the final winner and that set went to Barrera 7-3 for first place.

and she earned that by a lopsided 6-2 scoreline. With the finals set and the late hour, both players agreed on a 60/40 split of first and second place instead of playing out the match. COMPLETE PAYOUTS: 1st Vince Sbelgio $660 2nd Jaye Succo $460 3rd Spencer Downs $165 4th Bob Ferrell $75

POSEY OVER ALDELAIMI IN UNUSUAL FREEZER’S FINAL MATCH

REECE WINS FREEZER’S ONE POCKET

SKYLER POSEY AND ABDULWAHAB ALDELAIMI AGREED TO PLAY OUT THE FINAL MATCH, WITH POSEY SCORING A 4-3 WIN AT THE FREEZER’S BCA WARMUP EVENT ON DECEMBER 22ND.

ONE POCKET WAS THE GAME AT FREEZER’S ON DECEMBER 23RD, WHERE SIXTEEN PLAYERS FACED OFF IN SINGLE ELIMINATION RACES TO THREE.

P

osey took the hot-seat with wins over Susan Williams, Mike Ramirez and George Bell. Aldelaimi dropped his final four match against George Bell 5-2, but corrected his course quickly when he hit the one loss side. Wins over Nate Verry and Mike Ramirez earned Aldelaimi a rematch with Bell, which he took full advantage of, winning 5-2.

Abdulwahab Aldelaimi and Skyler Posey

Considering that they both came to the tournament to win, Posey and Aldelaimi agreed to play out the final match instead of settling for the typical 1st/2nd split and it was Posey getting the win to justify that decision as the right one. COMPLETE PAYOUTS:
