ebruary’s Player of the Month is Sophia Morquecho-Balancad. Sophia just won her first singles state title out in Tucson, but even without that win, she would be deserving of accolades just based on everything she does for pool here in Arizona. Check out our interview on page 15 this month. I hope all of the 565 & Under players are getting excited about the first stop on the Arizona Amateur Tour. I know I am. The tour kicks off at Bullshooters on February 22nd - 23rd. You will also find an article on page 9 this month about the new Westside APA league operators. I am glad to welcome Tina and Lance Schulze to the Arizona pool family.

W

eiss & Barker dropped their opening match to Jon Driver & Perfecto Diaz 4-3, but took it all in stride as they then proceeded to win eight straight matches on the one loss

side. As if that wasn’t enough domination, Duncan & Steve didn’t even allow an opposing team to win more than one rack against them in their first six matches on the left side of the board.

On the winner’s side, it was Brady Williams & Jeff Nelson taking the hot-seat with a 4-2 win over Bob Ferrell & Nick Kline. Weiss & Barker survived a hill-hill battle with Jeff Lenschow & Steve DeLu-

na for 3rd/4th place and then eliminated Ferrell & Kline 4-2 in the semi-final match. With the knowledge that Weiss & Barker were not in any side pots, Williams & Nelson knew they had the majority of the prize money locked up and that was fortunate for them as they went on to drop both sets of the finals 4-1 and 4-0 to settle for second place and only $1,340 in prize money. Franco, the lowest rated player at 444, was getting spots from her opponents all day, but she was going with the “Hey Grady, up your @$$ with the spot, okay with you?” approach, as she beat both Ray Robles and George Bell 3-2. Daniel knew he had his work cut out for him and took control of the hot-seat match, beating Franco 7-1.

Cashing Glory By Carl STEWART BCA Certified Instructor

A

t the Academy, I get students that start taking lessons and their goals include turning “professional”. Let’s define the word “professional”. The dictionary says it’s a noun - “a person who earns a living in a sport or other occupation and a person that is engaging in an activity for gain or as a means of livelihood”. In the past, I laughed and told them to get a car so they can sleep in it and a working girlfriend, so they are never flat broke. I was kind of joking of course, but the professional pool player life is a rough path. I have been around this sport a long time and I have seen even the best of players struggle to find sponsorship. In 2020, I have changed my mindset on what I will tell people and students that dream of going pro, and that is due in part to a local pool player telling me “you can’t cash glory”. It really made me think of the game of billiards different and how players that just gamble never really get the same titles of a tournament player. When a player’s bio is read, the cash games are never mentioned. Being a BCA 8 ball champion is listed though. We must live each day of our time on this earth planning for what will be put on our tombstones and the titles will look nice to visitors. Another reason for the mindset change is when you get older, life gets shorter and you figure

WE ALL KNOW THE SPORT WE LOVE DOES NOT PAY MUCH IN PRIZE MONEY COMPARED TO OTHER SPORTS. IT IS ALSO VERY HARD TO MAKE A LIVING PLAYING THE SPORT I travel to larger professional events, WITH THE COST OF TRAVEL AND LIVING EXPENSES. In addition, any major titles. gold medalist I had I had ever heard is important will certainly change. I On reflection I was very wrapped of. We all know Bruce had some life guess means we are evolving. I have up in the fact the sport I love will changing choices but ever time he is learned a rich person is buried just not pay the bills of life. Even when in the news, his title is “Gold med-

al winner”. Now of course, its Michael Phelps with his multiple Gold medals. The International Olympic Committee doesn’t give prize money, but many countries reward their medalists with a bonus. U.S. Olympians, for example, earned $37,500 for each gold medal won this year, $22,500 for each silver and $15,000 for each bronze. In team sports, each team member splits the pot evenly. None of these stat are mentioned though. Again, the Gold, Silver or Bronze is the title won for the rest of their lives and deaths. So remember, “do what you love, and the money will follow”, and if it doesn’t it will still be ok. Earning titles and awards instead of money is ok too. You will be able to cash glory after you win the title.

The Truth About Cues, Part 6

‘80s and early ‘90s, things really started to change.

TAKEN ON AN IDENTITY THAT OVERSHADOWS THE REST OF THE CUE WHILE ALSO HAVING A MAJOR IMPACT ON MUCH OF THE BILLIARD INDUSTRY. THAT COMPONENT IS THE SHAFT. To the best of my recollection,

B

ack in the stone age, things were simple. A billiard/ pool cue was a single piece of round wood that tapered pretty much in a straight line from the grip end to the impact end. You glued a piece of leather to the impact end, and you were ready to shoot. As time passed and tables became more plentiful, the desire of players to always have a familiar cue with them when going from one location to another led to the invention of the two-piece cue because of its portability. The large end of the cue then be-

came known as the butt, and the to use a longer follow-through on small end became known as the the stroke since the shaft didn’t “grow” and start to bind in the finshaft. gers of the bridge hand so quickInitially, the taper of the shaft ly. But somewhere along asked for it. the line, someone realized that a straight taper and a closed bridge For years the pro-taper shaft was weren’t all that compatible with the norm in the industry, with playeach other, so cue makers started ers only deviating from that norm building shafts that stayed thin fur- by ordering shafts with varying ther back from the tip before they lengths of taper, i.e. “8-inch pro tastarted following the taper-line of per,” “10-inch pro taper,” “12-inch the butt. Moori was the first tip maker to introduce a layered tip. And besides the difference of being layered, the tip was made from pigskin instead of cowhide. Now I’ve never been entirely sure why Moori chose pigskin over cowhide, but I think it has something to do with the texture of the hide. Pigskin has finer fibers than cowhide, so maybe tips made of pigskin will hold chalk better and give a better grip on the ball? In the next article I will further discuss the theory behind the layered tip, plus get into the appearance of the first laminated shaft.

Everyone in this division plays to have a good time out and spend time with their significant other or close friends, or in some cases it’s a family team. Each year, APA runs a Valentine Day Jack & Jill Scotch Doubles tournament that qualifies another J&J team for Nationals. It’s just another super fun tournament that we run, Gina said. APA also runs 2 Qualifying tournaments per year to determine who gets the 8 ball doubles and the 9 ball doubles slots. This year we qualified two ladies from Glendale to represent Phoenix in May. The rest of the doubles teams will be determined in the next couple of months. We want to wish Latisha Langan and Nicole Hatleli lots of luck in the Vegas Championship. In a unique format, where all players started in a standard double elimination bracket, it would only be the 4 remaining players in the winner’s bracket and the remaining 2 in the loser’s bracket, who would compete in a 6-player playoff. Joseph Farias and Victor Vasques entered the playoff with byes as they both were undefeated, while RC Coles and Jim Birnbaum faced off, along with Jerry Tistle and Don Portell battling it out for the first playoff round. Birnbaum would defeat Coles decisively 3-0, putting him in a match with Victor Vasques. Tistle just barely beat Portell 3-2 in an exciting match, only to face Joseph Farias next. come up one match short of that rematch. He defeated Uribe and Dan Lorett in back-to-back 2-1 matches, but couldn’t get by Damaral in the 2-1 semi-final match. Ast was just as strong in the finals as he had been all night, scoring a 2-0 win in the rematch with Damaral for first place.

USUALLY THE LAST MATCH OF THE NIGHT AT A POOL TOURNAMENT INCLUDES A PLAYER WHO HASN’T LOST A MATCH YET. THAT WASN’T THE CASE AT THE 615 & UNDER 9-BALL EVENT ON JANUARY 12TH.

T

he winner’s side came down to Dan Lorett vs Dennis Winkler and Rick Morris vs Carlos Esparza. Both Winkler and Morris won those matches 4-0. That left Winkler and Morris for the hot-seat, where Morris won 4-3. That’s where things got a little unusual.

Ed Damaral and Bobby Ast

Morris, sitting in the hot-seat, had to leave the tournament early. That left him in 2nd place and Winkler guaranteed a spot in the finals but not guaranteed a 1st or PAGE 22

2nd place finish. That final match would be a rematch with Lorett, and it was Lorett scoring a 4-0 win to take first and send Winkler home in 3rd place. COMPLETE PAYOUTS: 1st Dan Lorett $140 2nd Rick Morris $85 3rd Dennis Winkler $105 4th Carlos Esparza $40 5th Tony Norton $12 5th Erica Begay $12

t the New Year’s Day Blind Draw scotch doubles event, Moore was teamed up with Dan Neagle, and they cruised to the hot-seat with three straight 4-2 match wins. Their third of those wins was against Dennis Winkler & Chris Uribe, and it would not be the last they would see of Dennis & Chris. To make matters worse for Bill & Chris, they then dropped a 4-3 decision to Randell Moore and Rick Morris. That win was Randell & Rick’s fifth straight match win, after losing to Alex & Junior in their first match of the day. If Randell & Rick were hoping to ride that momentum to a dou-
