I

want to give a big shout out this month to Dennis Winkler. I played Dennis in a tourney over this last weekend and when faced with a tough 8-ball, he tried to play safe and made the 8-ball. I know some people would have said they were trying the shot, but Dennis quickly explained what he had been trying to do and that he didn't think the ball had a chance to go in. That was at hill-hill and turned out to decide the match. While I say that some people might have said they were trying the ball, it didn't surprise me at all that Dennis did not. Thanks Dennis.

Having a game plan is necessary for billiard success but your game plan is worthless unless you put into action. Plus, you must stay with it even when things are not going perfect. The key to putting your plan into action is focusing on your plan. Focusing on your plan can be tricky during competitions. When facing a highly ranked opponent, billiard players tend to focus on what their opponent is doing. Taking the focus

Remember to write the game plan down and discuss it with a trusted friend / player or an instructor. “When you write down your ideas, you automatically focus your full attention on them. Few if any of us can write one thought and think another at the same time. Thus, a pencil and paper make excellent concentration tools.” Do not be afraid to share your game plan with the right people.

How to Put a Billiard Game Plan into Action • First, you must formulate a game plan, whether the plan takes advantage of your strengths or exposes the competition’s weakness. No matter, you need a strategy to focus on when the match starts. • Next you want to mentally rehearse your game plan during

The Truth About Cues, Part Four

By Roger Long

ball runs danced in my head as I awaited the arrival of my new cue. Finally, the day came.

IN MY LAST ARTICLE I MENTIONED THAT THERE ARE THREE STANDARD JOINTS USED IN CUES: 5/16-14, But guess what…I never did like 5/16-18, AND 3/8-10. THESE THREE JOINTS ARE FOUND IN PROBABLY 70%, OR MORE, OF ALL CUES IN the way that cue played! USE TODAY.

T

hat number used to be much higher, but the ratio has changed quite a bit in recent years, and it will probably change even more as it seems every new cue maker that comes along today feels a need to introduce their own joint style. Some of the joints that differ from the standard three are: Uni-Loc (a quick-release), Radial (a ball thread), 3/8-11 & 3/8-12 (both variants of the 3/8-10), Wavy (a ball thread variant), United (a 5/16-14 variant), and the Speed Joint (another 5/16-14 variant).

viding a snugger fit, but they all do practically nothing to improve the hit of the cue. It appears their main purpose in being different is to steer the consumer back to the original cue maker when looking for replacement shafts and joint caps. That explanation may sound unreasonable until you realize that proprietary products command premium prices. It’s a marketing strategy that has worked well in the software industry, and now cue makers are learning how to make it work for them, too.

The thing to remember is that the A few of these newer joint styles type of joint used in a cue will may offer benefits such as requir- make a difference in how the cue ing less threading time, or pro- hits. This point was driven home

to me early in my pool playing life. My first decent cue was a Rich. It had a 5/16-18 flat-faced joint, with a brass pin going into a brass ferule. I played thousands of games with that cue and I loved the way it hit. But then, anything would have been better than those old Taiwan cues with the screw-on tips that I had used in the beginning. Then the time came for me to step up in the world, so I ordered a Tim Scruggs custom cue that had four veneered Rosewood points in the forearm, a Rosewood butt sleeve, a linen wrap, and decorative stitched rings for accents. That cue cost me $400, which was a lot of money at that time (1984). Visions of 100-

PAGE 8

It took me months of playing with the Scruggs, plus hours of mental contemplation to figure out what the problem was, but then I finally did. There were some minor differences in weight and shaft size between my old Rich and my new Scruggs, but the biggest difference was in their joints. The Scruggs cue had a 5/16-14 stainless steel pin going into a piloted brass insert in the shaft. The “piloted” part of that description tells us that the flange on the insert protrudes out from the shaft and fits down into a cavity in the butt when the two parts are screwed together, which in turn tells us that there was no wood-to-wood contact like I had had in my Rich cue. Result: different hit altogether.

Undecided Wins TAP Nationals ON A SUNNY FALL DAY IN BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI, UNDECIDED, THE TEAM REPRESENTING PHOENIX’S TAP LEAGUE BECAME THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS, CINCHING THE WIN AGAINST A TOUGH TEAM FROM FLORIDA.

I

t was the second year in a row that the team consisting of players Brad Andrews, Polly Hughes, Travis Choate, Brady Williams, Sandeep Sharma, Marcos Romero, Scott Mathews and Rich Coon went to the National Championship; but this year they found their stride and with it, the Championship.

The team earned their spot at Nationals by beating a field of 23 other teams in August’s local Master’s Tournament – TAP’s National qualifier. This win came against a determined Ballizsticks team, no stranger to the National Championship, having made it in 2015. But, in the end, it was Undecided who was on their way to Nationals, with all-expenses paid as a result of their win and the determination to beat over 100 teams from the United States and Canada. The tournament started on November 3rd with the round robin matches where Undecided struggled out of the gates but made up ground by the end of match play with a 5-0 against a Mississippi team. This comeback earned the team a spot on the Platinum Bracket and a chance to play for the Championship. Days 2 and 3 saw Undecided eke out a 3-2 win against Andy’s Hot Spot, a strong team from Ohio, but then sail through rounds 2, 3, and 4, handily beating some tough opponents: 3-0, 3-1 and 3-0. Clutch shots and wins were made by Brady Williams and Sandeep Sharma, as the team rallied to advance to the final match, against They Hate Us, a team from Florida who had seen their share of championship matches.

Travis Choate and Marcos Romero

ing it up 2-2, setting up a final showdown between Brad Andrews (handicap 6) and an opposing 6 handicap player; Brad would need 5 wins to propel the team to the title. With the match at 1-1, it was time to turn up the heat, and that Brad did with a solid win in game 3 and a crushing break and run to take game 4. It all came to an end in Game 5 as Brad snapped a beautiful break and watched the 8-ball trickle into the side pocket! It was a win and championship that came after a long year of hard work and, as all of us can attest, just the right amount of luck. Nevertheless, Undecided earned a well-deserved win and a cool $12,000 in prize money to split amongst themselves and came home as the 2019 TAP National Champions!

Congratulations to Undecided for a Throughout the match, the teams job well done and for representing played fairly even, eventually ty- the best in Arizona pool!

December Player of the Month

Chris Lulek Let’s start with the basics. How old are you and what do you do for a living?

We see a lot of you at the table, what do you do when you aren’t out winning tournaments?

What events do you have on your immediate schedule for the future? Besides that, do you have any goals for the near or long term future?

What kind of cues do you play with? My player is an early 90's Schon, it's rare cause it has 18 points, and I've had it for 20 years. I break with Chris Lulek a Mezz power break II, and I jump with a stealth. make 2 balls in a row, as frustratIs there one room here in town ing as that was I kept practicing and eventually found my game again. that you consider your homeBeing on the winning 2017, 2018, room? 2019 Westside Saguaro cup team I mostly play at Bullshooters cause took my game to another level. it's closest to home, but I travel to Team play is something I've always the Eastside quite often. You have had a heck of a year. You were on the winning team in two of the biggest events in the state, the Saguaro Cup and the Southwest Desert Cup. It seems like the bigger an event is, the better you play. Are you doing something different this year to account for your success?

going back and forth from a GC at home to a Diamond in the pool rooms was hard to do. My game on the Diamond table has improved since.

I spend a lot of time working, casinos are open 24/7 so you never know when I'll get a call or have to leave town. I spend the rest of my time with my family, I have a beautiful wife and daughter that love the game of pool too and they understand the practice time it takes to compete at the high level, I couldn't do it without their support.

I just turned 44 today (Nov 29th). I am the president of my family business Cyberdyne Gaming, we develope computer hardware and software for the casino/gaming industry. I've been doing it for over 30 years now. I also work part time recovering pool tables with Dave Clayton, I'm grateful for what he has taught me, he's one of the best in the business.

I was 12 and heard that my Father was Junior state champion in Connecticut when he was 16 so I really wanted to follow his footsteps, I was a natural, I traded my 4 wheeler for a friends 8 foot table when I was 14. I grew up playing in the Vegas scene, I learned a lot from Danny Diliberto and moved to Phoenix when I was 22.

Can you describe a little how having the weight of the state on your shoulders for an event like the Desert Cup feels? Confidence is the key, having any doubt in your ability makes this game nearly impossible. I try my best to tune out the crowd and make it just me and the table. I'm a true believer that it ain't over till it's over. How do you prepare for a big event? Do you do something different than you would at a more “routine” local event?

Usually a month or so before a big event I start a practice routine at least 6 days a week. I focus mainly on the break, I feel at the high level competition the break is most imWell, back in April 2016 I suffered portant especially in the alternating a severe heart attack, I was told break format. It took months before I could spend on the table each week?

Well, I've had a table at home to practice on for the last 15 years so I'd hit balls usually everyday for at least 5 minutes. Last May I sold my Gold crown 4, the transition from

Luckily I've been chosen to co- captain and play on the 2020 Desert cup team by captain Nick De Leon. Although we have our hands full with the pros the Vegas Heat is bringing this year, we are confident that the cup will remain in Arizona. A goal of mine would be to play the Derby one year, I've never been there. I think I would do well because of the format.

Freezer’s Points List Series Domination Continues THE DOMINATION ON THE FREEZERS OPEN POINTS LIST SERIES CONTINUED ON NOVEMBER 10TH AS CHRIS LULEK WON HIS SECOND EVENT IN THREE MONTHS.

L

ulek scored tight wins over Abdulwahab Aldelaimi, Jaye Succo, and Scott Chadwick to get things started, and then sent Danny Teurman to the one loss side 7-3. Lulek then met up with a familiar opponent as he took on Tim Daniel for the hot-seat. Once again, Daniel just had no answer for Lulek’s game and was only able to pocket three 9-balls before Lulek took the 7-3 win.

Two months ago, it was Aldelaimi who came through the one loss side, and this time it was Bernie Pettipiece. Pettipiece lost to Mike Dickinson early in the day, but then eliminated Jimmy Sears, Ray Robles, Teurman and Bret Huth to get to the semi-final match against Daniel.

While Daniel has gotten deep in these tournaments the last couple of months, this reporter thinks that with some practice, Daniel has a bright future at the table.

The final match went one set with Lulek scoring a hard fought 7-6 win to score yet another points list event Although Daniel gave it all win. With this win, Luthat he had, it just wasn’t lek jumped ahead of Spike enough as he lost to Pet- Aiardo into second place tipiece 5-4 for yet another on the points list and looks finish outside of the finals. poised to quickly catch up the mere 610 point lead that the points leader enjoys.
