This edition of the magazine shines a light on Wellbeing; a thriving business community depends on a thriving population.
We at the Chamber are committed to supporting our members in building healthier workplaces and this edition is filled with inspiration and local success stories to help you on that journey.
As business leaders, we are constantly focused on growth, innovation, and results. But one of the most powerful drivers of long-term success is something less often discussed: the health and wellbeing of our people.
We know healthy employees are more productive, engaged, and less likely to be absent. Businesses with strong wellbeing programmes often see improved retention which can also support recruitment.
Throughout this magazine, you will find
Here at Ayrshire Chamber, we have also been listening closely to what our members want, having invested in the Westfield Wellbeing platform, that all your employees can access.
We have also invested in Chamber Pirkx, a wellbeing package that provides over 40 wellbeing benefits, designed to support your health, financial wellness, educate, and more!
Please reach out to one of the team to find out more about either of these.
Another supportive benefit is our Westfield Health Chamber Primary Health Plan. This benefit allows staff to claim money back, up to set limits, for things like eye tests and glasses, dental bills, therapy treatments and consultations. Karen Condie, director at Holmes Mackillop Solicitors, has urged employers to monitor and review staff wellbeing initiatives in response to a report that absence levels at Scottish councils have hit a new high.
“Audit Scotland’s latest report shows yet another increase in sick days in our councils and schools that mirrors the wider increasing number of days lost to sickness in our NHS and Scottish Government,” she said.
“The report finds employees have become disengaged and the increased burden of absent colleagues is exacerbating the problem.
“Hybrid working was embraced by many
employers as a result of the ways of working necessitated by the Covid restrictions, but the auditor finds there has been little attempt to measure the effect of hybrid working on not just efficiency but employee wellbeing and recruitment.”
Condie said that with wellbeing of employees deteriorating and recruitment being a major issue for many employers, this widespread failure to review and monitor the effects of working practices is disappointing.
“A successful organisation needs to see what’s working and what’s not with any strategy or practice it has or is considering introducing,” she said.
“There are many resources available to employers, from ACAS among others, to work with staff in promoting positive wellbeing but they have to be monitored and reviewed to find out if they do.”

Dains Accountants recognises that today’s healthcare sector faces growing financial pressures. From rising National Insurance costs to ongoing funding restraints, GP practices are facing significant challenges — all while delivering vital care to their communities.
With a dedicated Healthcare Team based in Ayrshire, Dains is well placed to help. Led by Partner Stephen Bargh, alongside Laura Nicoll and Rachel Murphy, the team understands the specific financial needs of medical professionals and GP practices. They work closely with clients across Ayrshire and Scotland, providing expert advice on accountancy, taxation, finance, and guidance on the complexities of NHS pensions and
superannuation - all common challenges for practice managers and GP partners.
As cost pressures and operational demands grow, Dains offers proactive, local advice tailored to the realities of general practice. Whether supporting individual professionals, established surgeries or new partnerships, the team brings clarity and confidence to financial decision-making.
Stephen, Laura and the team help practices focus on what matters most — patient care: “Our support isn’t just about compliance,” says Stephen. “It’s about supporting practices with their financial issues, so they can focus on delivering excellent patient care.”
What sets Dains apart is the breadth of its sector expertise. Advising GP practices,

At CoreHealth Chiropractic, they believe that healthy employees build strong businesses. With musculoskeletal issues accounting for over 7.8 million lost working days last year alone, looking after your team’s spinal health has never been more important.
That’s why they are offering Ayrshire Chamber members a FREE on-site spinal screening session.
These private, one-to-one sessions give employees the chance to discuss any back, neck, or posture-related concerns and receive a bespoke spine check from one of our experienced chiropractors or osteopaths. Based on the results, CoreHealth Chiropractic will provide guidance on the next best
steps—whether that’s postural advice, home exercises, a treatment recommendation, or a referral to their GP.
CoreHealth Chiropractic specialise in helping your teams stay mobile, pain-free, and productive—particularly those affected by prolonged desk work, repetitive tasks, or high stress. Many of their patients are also surprised to find that care is included in their workplace health insurance (including Westfield Health, AXA, and WPA), meaning ongoing care is often covered at no personal cost.
As winners of Best Health & Wellbeing Practice in Scotland 2024, the CoreHealth Chiropractic team are passionate about creating healthier workplaces across Ayrshire.

Imagine a workday where you’re wrapped in a weighted blanket, enveloped by healing and arrive back at your desk with a smile on your face, energised for the week ahead.
In today’s fast-paced world of deadlines, demands and digital overload, more and more businesses are realising the value of prioritising staff wellbeing—and not just as a buzzword. Workplace wellbeing sessions are helping organisations do just that, offering employees a genuine reset that goes far beyond a lunchtime yoga class.
Ayrshire Healing Centre deliver immersive, rejuvenating sessions designed to support mental, emotional, and physical resilience in the workplace. Think: guided meditation, sound baths, therapeutic drumming,
aromatherapy blending, therapeutic art sessions, and more - tailored to each team’s unique vibe. Transforming boardrooms into sanctuaries and away days into soulnourishing experiences that foster genuine team bonding.
These sessions are already a firm favourite with schools, council departments, and private companies across the region. Why? Because they work. Teams leave feeling calmer, more connected, and better equipped to manage stress—resulting in improved morale, fewer absences, and a more cohesive, resilient workforce.
It’s not just about what happens during the session—it’s the ripple effect afterwards. When your staff feel valued, recharged, and supported, the whole workplace benefits.
Ayrshire Healing Centre are proud to be helping businesses of all sizes invest in what matters most—the people behind them. Get in touch if you’re ready to experience the shift for your team.

In today’s, high-pressure corporate environment, businesses are beginning to understand that their most valuable asset isn’t technology or profit margins — it’s their people.
Based in Ayrshire, Revive and Thrive Wellbeing Ltd is at the forefront of this mindset shift, helping employers invest in their staff’s health, productivity, and long-term wellbeing.
Lesley Kerr, Director of Revive and Thrive:
“We don’t believe in overcomplicating health. At its core, the company thrives on one simple principle - healthy employees create healthier businesses!
“What sets us apart is the ability to deliver essential health education in a way that’s clear, practical, and easy to understand and implement into a busy life — no medical jargon, no fluff.”
Founded on a passion for preventative health and proactive care, Revive and Thrive
specialise in delivering corporate wellbeing programmes, on-site health checks, as well as engaging presentations on nutrition, lifestyle, and mental wellbeing.
Since launching Revive and Thrive, they have attended networking and events through their Gold+ Ayrshire Chamber membership, to help them grow and build new relationships throughout the area.
Revive and Thrive have had the privilege of appearing on Ailsa Reliability’s LIVE lunch broadcast, and have established themselves as Booth Welsh’s wellbeing professionals, regularly attend their site to look after the wellbeing of their employees.
“It’s a win for us, in our first year of trading, to have entered into such a rewarding partnership.” Lesley says of the partnership.
Their visits to Booth Welsh have allowed them to build a ‘know, like and trust’ rapport with staff, who willingly engage in regular screening - done to identify and signs of
preventable illnesses and maximise their wellbeing, both inside and outside of work.

The health of a business is only as strong as the health of its people. And across Scotland, more business owners—especially those with small teams—are recognising that offering private healthcare isn’t just a “big corporate” perk anymore.
“Time off sick, long NHS waits, and low morale can be a real drag on productivity,” says Robert Craig, Director of Clyde Health and Healthcare Partner with WPA. “What I love is showing business owners how affordable and practical it can be to offer meaningful support—like 24/7 GP access, mental health care, and speedy diagnostics.”
In a climate where recruitment and retention are tougher than ever, healthcare benefits are helping small and medium-sized firms stand out. Whether it’s a growing trades business or a professional services team, employers are realising that looking after their people’s wellbeing is also good business.
Robert adds: “I work with businesses all over Scotland, and the conversation is changing. When someone’s off sick, it’s not just about absence—it’s about the knock-on effect. Being proactive with healthcare cover can make a huge difference to resilience and morale.”

We all know the value of switching off, but it isn’t always easy when your mind is wired for constant problem-solving. That’s where sound could help.
Purposeful sound, delivered with skill, can act as a direct line to the nervous system. It can signal the body to shift out of a high-alert state, lower heart rate, and allow the mind to move into a calmer, more focused space. Unlike silence alone, sound gives the brain something tangible to follow, which could help even the busiest mind settle faster.
Pauline Speirs, Founder of Sound Therapy Scotland:
“In my 20 years of working with therapeutic sound, I’ve seen it help people drop into a state of deep rest within minutes,
even if they arrived tense and distracted.
“The effect isn’t mystical; it’s physiological. When the body feels safe, thinking becomes clearer, creativity returns, and decisionmaking improves.”
Try this now: pause for two minutes. Close your eyes. Listen to the hum of the room, the rhythm of your breathing, the subtlest sounds you can detect. Notice how your shoulders begin to drop without you asking them to.
You don’t need hours to feel the benefits. A short, dedicated session of intentional listening, whether in a one-to-one setting or as part of a team wellbeing programme, could create a noticeable reset.
This autumn, consider making sound part of your performance strategy. Step away from
the noise that drains you, and choose the sound that restores you.

As the days shorten and temperatures drop, our energy often follows suit. Autumn and winter can be the seasons where mood dips, stress spikes, and productivity quietly takes a hit.
The message for both individuals and companies are the same: wellbeing is not just about feeling good, it’s about sustaining the capacity to perform, adapt, and thrive.
Angela Wood, Integrated Therapist & Clinical Hypnotherapist:
“A supported employee is a productive employee. In Scotland, wellbeing is fast becoming the smartest business strategy.
“The businesses that truly understand this aren’t just weathering the seasons — they’re building the kind of culture that can succeed in any climate.”
1. Boost Productivity: Research shows that organisations with well-structured wellbeing initiatives can experience up to a 25% increase in productivity.
2. Reduce Absenteeism: According to the Health and Safety Executive, stress, anxiety, and depression account for over 50% of work-related ill health cases in the UK.
3. Enhance Employee Retention: Investing in mental health and well-being can reduce turnover rates by as much as 50%.
4. Foster a Positive Workplace Culture: Supporting employee well-being creates an environment of trust and openness.
5. Attract Top Talent: Companies that promote well-being initiatives stand out in the competitive hiring landscape, helping you attract and retain the best talent.
Time For Me offers a variety of wellbeing programmes tailored to meet the unique needs of local organisations, and their employees.
Support could be as easy as adopting interactive workshops and training, Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), access to confidential counselling, confidential services, and helpful resources.

Commenting on the latest ONS trade data, BCC Head of Trade Policy, William Bain, said:
“This was the first full quarter of the ‘reciprocal’ US tariffs, which add an extra 10% to most UK sectors, from food and drink to chemicals. The effect of these higher costs is becoming clear, with the lowest levels of goods exports to the US for 3 years.
UK goods exports declined in June 2025 by 6.1% in volume compared with May.
Comparing UK goods exports in Q2 to the US with the same quarter a year ago, sales were £2bn lower on non-seasonally adjusted data. A drop of 13.5% year-onyear by quarter.
On exports to the EU across the quarter, power generators and ships exports performed strongly.
“Implementation of the UK’s trade deal with the US in full is now needed to improve prospects, particularly for steel and aluminium goods.”
The volume of UK goods imports fell by 3.6% in June.
Are you looking for ways to look after your team’s wellbeing, without breaking the bank?
For Q2 as a whole, total goods imports to the UK rose by 1.6%, in value terms, with imports from the EU 3.1% higher on the quarter and non-EU goods imports flat.
Chemicals and machinery/transport equipment imports from the EU performed strongly in Q2 2025.
Tariffs of 10% on automotive vehicles and automotive parts for UK vehicles in the US, and zero tariffs for civil aerospace vehicles and parts came into effect from 30 June 2025. There are also now 50% tariffs for certain copper exports.

Adworks knows that great design doesn’t just brighten walls – it changes how people feel, think, and interact with the spaces around them. Over the past year, the team has been putting that belief into action in schools across North and South Ayrshire, creating environments that inspire healthy habits, celebrate learning, and spark curiosity.
In North Ayrshire, Adworks partnered with all Secondary Schools to roll out a bold, vibrant range of signage promoting healthy eating and active lifestyles. From lunch menus and specials boards to counter panels and pillar graphics, every piece was designed to be eye-catching, age-appropriate, and packed with positive energy. The result? Dining halls that feel fun, welcoming, and make healthy
choices the easy choice.
In South Ayrshire, their long-standing partnership with Marr College took centre stage with a major refresh of key areas. Highlights included striking science corridor vinyls, dynamic Meta Skills+ message zones, and a show-stopping new foyer display. But the real standout moment came with a handson creative workshop that put pupils in the designer’s seat. Working side-by-side with the Adworks team, students helped reimagine the school café brand – exploring colour palettes, names, and design concepts. Their ideas, energy, and insight directly shaped the final look, making the café a true reflection of the school community.
Whether it’s a canteen, a corridor, or a main entrance, Adworks brings the same mission to every project: design with purpose.
These aren’t just makeovers – they’re transformations that encourage positive lifestyles, showcase achievement, and inspire learning every single day.

Ross McPhillie, Research and Development Engineer at RUA Life Sciences in Irvine, is leading innovation in the medical device world - earning him the Young Engineer of the Year 2024 title from Scottish Engineering.
Ross and the Structural Heart team at RUA are working to solve one of the biggest challenges in structural heart disease treatment—by developing a next-generation polymer heart valve leaflet that moves beyond the limitations of existing bioprosthetic and mechanical options.
Leveraging RUA’s expertise in textile manufacturing and advanced polymer materials, Ross and his team have created a novel composite material, AurTex™, that mimics the natural flexibility and function of heart valve leaflets. The new material combines the group’s proprietary
polymer, Elast-Eon™ —a world leading, longterm implantable polyurethane known for its exceptional blood compatibility — with a durable textile scaffold, providing the mechanical strength needed to withstand hundreds of millions of heartbeats.
This flexible polymeric leaflet material represents a game-changing alternative to decades-old technologies, with the potential to offer long-lasting, universal solutions—regardless of patient age or health profile.
With his work helping to position RUA Life Sciences at the forefront of cardiovascular innovation, Ross is demonstrating the strength of engineering talent and medical technology emerging from right here in Ayrshire.

It’s hard to believe that summer is now officially nearly over. I hope most of you have managed to enjoy a well-deserved break, away from work and relaxing in the sun with your loved ones (most likely not in Scotland).
The past few months have sped by for the DYW Ayrshire team, there’s been so much going on. A small number of individuals from the DYW Ayrshire team, teachers, teaching assistants and others involved in guiding young people into rewarding careers were delighted to receive an invite from the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire & Arran to attend a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace in honour of those doing outstanding work in education. It was a lovely sunny day
and a wonderful experience for all those involved. Most importantly though, it was a well-deserved recognition of all the hard work each and every one of them puts in every day to support the young people across Ayrshire.
Alongside the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire & Arran and Walter Smith, DYW Ayrshire’s Ambassador, I recently had the honour of attending the opening of the Lockhart Campus Creations Shop in Stevenson, and the new Coalpots Café barista bar at Invergarven School in Girvan. Both are superb DYW Ayrshire supported projects which you will be reading more about in the following pages. Seeing first-hand the dedication of the teachers and carers, and what they achieve with their young students through these work-
based projects is for me the highlight of the work we do at DYW Ayrshire.
As we look forward to the new academic year, and our extensive DYW school engagement programme, we can perhaps also hope and pray for a late Indian summer here on the wonderful West Coast of Scotland.
Mike Stewart, DYW Ayrshire Chair
On Wednesday 14th May, representatives from DYW Ayrshire were honoured to attend the prestigious Education and Skills Royal Garden Party held at Buckingham Palace.
This special occasion celebrated the inspiring work and initiatives taking place across schools in Ayrshire. We were privileged to be invited in recognition of our ongoing efforts to support young people in developing skills for the future.
DYW Ayrshire attendees included:
Gillian Longmuir – Head of Projects, DYW Ayrshire; Claire Baird – CEO, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce; Walter Smith MBE – DYW Ayrshire Business Ambassador; Maggie Smith; John Herd – Depute Head Teacher, Lockhart Campus; Mike Stewart – DYW Ayrshire Chair; Kath Stewart; Stephen Cowan – Depute Head Teacher, Grange Academy; Gaynor Hill – Pupil Support Teacher, Greenwood Academy (Lovilicious project); Lorraine Logan – Classroom Assistant, Lockhart Campus (Horticulture programme); Anita Hall – Depute Head Teacher, Prestwick Academy; Gavin Pitt – Quality Improvement Officer, South Ayrshire Council; Jennifer Torbit – Depute Head Teacher, Greenwood Academy
The 10th year of DYW (Developing Young Workforce) concluded with significant project launches taking place at two of the ASN (Additional Support Needs) schools in Ayrshire immediately prior to the school summer holidays.
These took place at Lockhart Campus, Stevenston in North Ayrshire and Invergarven School, Girvan in South Ayrshire.
At Invergarven, the launch of their second DYW funded innovative school project (ISP), Coalpots Café was held on the last day of the school year. This followed on from the launch of their horticultural skills project, Invergarven Family Garden, in June 2024. The school was delighted that the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Sheriff Iona McDonald could again carry out the formal ribbon cutting ceremony.
The new barista project along with the existing horticulture project significantly broadens the school curriculum through the development of food and drink preparation and hygiene skills along with a focus on customer service. This has already resulted in the award of appropriate qualifications for the participating pupils.
At Lockhart, two new ISPs were launched –Lockhart Campus Domestic Services and the Campus Creations, Lockhart Community Shop.
The launch of these projects now means that Lockhart Campus has put in place twelve DYW streams since the school opened in 2021.
· Lockhart Growers, Lockhart Bee Kind, Lockhart Coffee Shop in April 2022
· Lockhart Digital Media and Lockhart Wheelies in November 2022
Lockhart Textiles, Lockhart Childcare, Lockhart Hair and Beauty, Lockhart Domestic Services, Lockhart Outdoor Education, Lockhart Community Group and Campus Cakes in 2025.
The Lockhart Community Shop – Campus Creations is a first of its kind. This provides exactly what it says - a shop located in the school grounds open to the pupils, staff, family and friends and the local community. The shop will sell the products and services produced by the various school projects including plants, planters, vegetables, pickles, honey, beeswaxbased products, soaps, creams, recycled textiles, soft goods.
The community shop project was a result of matched funding from DYW, the school and Storm Aviation. Storm Aviation we are delighted to say funded the materials required for the construction of the concrete base.
We were delighted that the project launches at Lockhart were also conducted by the Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Sheriff Iona McDonald supported by Provost Anthea Dickson, NAC.
There is a major focus on sustainability so where possible projects are run as mini enterprises. The Invergarven and Lockhart projects are excellent examples of such mini enterprises. This allows them to reinvest the profits and fund ongoing supplies and become sustainable.
In an ASN context these projects develop life skills including what are known as the 6Cs –confidence, communications, commitment, customer services, customer care and courtesy. Plus, creativity as demonstrated by the project names. But also provide vocational skills and qualifications where appropriate for.
Walter Smith MBE, DYW Ayrshire Ambassador
The Curiosity Cube has recently visited Robert Burns Academy in Cumnock, Garnock Community Campus in Beith, and Mount Carmel Catholic Primary School in Kilmarnock.
The mobile science lab is designed to spark interest in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) through immersive, hands-on experiments.
Powered by science and technology company Merck, the Curiosity Cube aims to break down barriers to STEM education and inspire the next generation of scientists.
Students had the opportunity to work alongside Merck employees from the company’s
Ayrshire biopharmaceutical site, which specialises in biosafety testing.
Mauricio Camargo, site director for Merck’s Irvine site, said: “The Curiosity Cube represents a great opportunity to ignite a passion for science in the young minds of our community. This initiative embodies Merck’s vision of fostering curiosity and innovation, inspiring the next generation of scientists and thinkers.
When children explore and experiment, they not only learn but also spark an interest in discovery.
During the visit, pupils took part in three interactive experiments focused on the fundamentals of artificial intelligence, including
image authenticity, pattern recognition, and self-driving cars.
The activities were designed to help students see how STEM concepts apply to everyday life and develop critical thinking skills for future careers.
The Curiosity Cube is now in its fourth year of touring Europe, with each stop offering students a chance to become scientists for a day through engaging, real-world science experiences.
GE Aerospace Caledonian proudly hosted two inspiring Women in Engineering events on Friday, June 20th, and Monday, June 23rd, welcoming 60 S3 female pupils from seven secondary schools across North and South Ayrshire. These events aimed to ignite curiosity and passion for engineering among young women, showcasing the exciting opportunities available in the aerospace industry.
The day began with a warm site introduction, including a personal welcome from site leader Andy Prow, setting the tone for an engaging and memorable experience. Pupils embarked on a fascinating tour of the facility, observing the intricate processes involved
in aero engine maintenance— disassembly, cleaning, inspection, reassembly, and testing in the on-site test cell.
During lunch, the pupils had the unique opportunity to connect with three female employees who shared their career journeys, offering inspiring advice and insights into the diverse roles available in engineering. Their stories opened minds and encouraged the pupils to envision themselves as future leaders in the field.
The day concluded with a hands-on Lean Lego Production activity, where pupils—and even their teachers—embraced the challenge of continuous improvement. The competitive
spirit and teamwork demonstrated during the activity highlighted the potential of these young women to thrive in engineering environments.
It was an absolute pleasure to host these talented pupils and celebrate Women in Engineering Day, fostering the next generation of innovators and problem-solvers.

Earlier this year, McLaughlin Construction hosted Irvine Royal S3 pupils Skye and Mason for a weeklong work experience placement. Despite differing career aspirations— Skye pursuing architecture or interior design, Mason seeking an electrical apprenticeship— both gained valuable insight into construction industry processes.
Their programme included learning the tendering process with Bid Manager Niall, detailed quantifying tasks with the QS team, administrative work on plant returns and quotations, and a research exercise into the history of the former Magnum Leisure Centre site. They completed a creative playpark design exercise
originally developed for schools, then judged entries from Dalry Primary pupils following a recent STEAM session. Visits to live sites at the Irvine Coastal Hub playpark and Former King’s Arms residential project on High Street provided real-world context.
Skye appreciated gaining “knowledge of both on-site construction and how the admins manage it all,” while Mason described his week as “really enjoyable due to the fun staff and work,” recommending the experience to everyone.
McLaughlin Construction believes ensuring equitable access to high-quality work experience helps level the playing field, offering young
Our host organisation Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce in partnership with North and South Ayrshire Councils has been connecting employers with education since 2006. people valuable workplace insight—particularly important for those uncertain about their career path.
The benefits aren’t all one way either.” says Niall, “Explaining what we do and how we work, especially to young people who may have limited prior knowledge of business, brings a real opportunity for reflection, and for appreciation of the talent and achievements within our company.
McLaughlin Construction is working with Ayrshire Chamber to offer placements again next year.
Each year, Ayrshire Chamber participate and offer our local schools’ work placements, whether that be a weeklong or flexible and have welcomed many talented young people during that time.
Supporting the school work placement programme helps businesses build a future talent pipeline, boost their reputation in the community and gain
fresh perspectives and enthusiasm from young people — often at minimal cost. It can also be used as a preemployment tool.
We are seeking your support to help ensure that young people have access to work placements that develop their skills, boost their confidence and expand their networks.

Throughout May, teachers and educators took part in a series of workplace visits organised by Ayrshire Chamber’s Education Team. The aim was to help them see how their subjects connect directly to real-world industries.
Visits were arranged to Neogen, GE Caledonian, Wallace McDowall, and Ardagh Glass, with subject-specific teachers matched to relevant employers. For example:
• Technical teachers toured Wallace McDowall
• Maths teachers visited GE Caledonian
• Science teachers visited Neogen
• A mixed group of teachers and SDS Careers Advisors explored Ardagh Glass to gain insights into the glass sector and the process of bottle manufacturing
At Ardagh Glass, Allen Paterson, Operations Manager, opened the visit with a presentation on the Irvine plant’s history and the tradition of glassmaking on the site, before leading a
Launched in 2017, #NoWrongPath is an award-winning social media movement led by DYW, which provides inspiration and reassurance to young people receiving their SQA exam results.
This year results were received on Tuesday 5th August 2025 and to celebrate, people from across the country shared their stories – from what they left school to do and what they are doing now.
DYW recognises that some young people may feel disheartened by their results or current circumstances. This campaign aims to demonstrate that many people in interesting job roles across Scotland may not have taken a straight, obvious or traditional path to get there – and that there is #NoWrongPath.
