I want to acknowledge the challenging business conditions that we all face. April onwards will start to see the effects of the Autumn Budget come into play; research shows that the budget has created a challenging mix of cost pressures for businesses. The national insurance and minimum wage hikes are pushing firms to make tough decisions simply to balance the books. Changes to the employment rights legislation in the coming months are adding further costs and concern for businesses.
We undertook a survey to understand how, locally, it will impact our members. The messages that came back were clear: increased costs are going to slow down investment opportunities, recruitment and productivity.
As a Chamber, we will continue to support you by pushing forward with guidance,
Although we have a challenging backdrop, it is always important that we look for the positives. Our Spring edition does just that, by showcasing innovations from our members that support them to develop their business and take it to the next stage.
As a small business ourselves, I do understand the pressures businesses are under, and remain committed to ensuring you have the resources and support needed to navigate these difficult times. If we can be of any support, then please do not hesitate to get

The new General Product Safety Regulation proposed by the European Commission addresses safety concerns over products entering the EU via online marketplaces or other distance sale means which were non-compliant with EU safety standards and risked harm to consumers. The precautionary principle runs throughout the new obligations and processes introduced by the Regulation, alongside strong traceability of products.
The headline obligation is that for manufacturers or importers placing goods on the market from outside the EU/EEA/ NI that a responsible economic operator must be appointed within the EU/EEA/NI – this can either be the manufacturer, the importer, an authorised representative or a fulfilment services provider (involving two of the following - warehousing, packaging, addressing or dispatching – but not parcel, postal or freight services).
New obligations are placed upon the manufacturers of goods offered on online marketplaces under the rules or upon the manufacturers and importers of non-EU/EEA/ NI goods offered by other means – requiring the name, address and electronic address of the manufacturer; the name, address and electronic address of an authorised economic operator if the manufacturer is not in the EU/ EEA/NI; pictures of the product and details on the product type; warnings and safety notifications in a language the purchasing consumer can understand.
Additionally, for providers of online marketplaces, they must have in place a single point of contact for market surveillance authorities and enquiries, record product and customer information, use the Safety Business Gateway for reporting issues arising, report and cooperate with market surveillance authorities and other operators, and establish internal compliance procedures.
The new rules will apply in principle to all products, but with the following exclusions: food, feed, medicines for human use, live plants and animals, aircraft involving low safety risks, antiques.
Product safety legislation in Great Britain is unchanged but the new EU rules will apply in Northern Ireland via the Windsor Framework, and they also apply to exporters outside the EEA such as those in GB.
There are new obligations which manufacturers and merchants in GB have to meet today if they send place goods in affected categories on the market in either NI or the EU/EEA:
• Appoint an “responsible economic operator” with an address in NI or the EU/EEA for the goods if being marketed there.
• Conduct an internal risk analysis of the product and prepare technical documents based upon this.
• Make communication channels publicly available where consumers can make complaints, or receive safety information, about the goods.
• Investigate complaints and maintain internal records for 10 years on the outcomes of those complaints.
• Obligation to report accidents caused by the product via the Safety Business Gateway to the competent authorities of the EU/EEA state where the accident took place.
• Specific traceability requirements for certain products, categories or groups of products.
• Responsible economic operators must let affected consumers know directly about any product recall or safety alert.
• Offer a choice of two remedies including repair, replacement, or adequate refund of the goods covered by the recall.
Products already placed on the market before 13 December 2024 in NI/EU/EEA do not require to have a responsible economic operator, or any additional notices on the product or its packaging.
For goods in the affected categories coming from NI to GB they will be deemed to have met the requirements of the existing product safety legislation in GB and receive unfettered access to the UK Internal Market.
From the BCC perspective, guidance needs to be simpler, more easily understandable, and better directed at small business needs. The effective preparation time for small businesses also needs to be increased if future changes occur.

The shift from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 marks a new phase in industrial innovation, where technology and human collaboration go hand in hand. Over the past decade, Industry 4.0 has driven automation, digitalisation, and data-driven efficiency. However, as businesses face new challenges—including sustainability, workforce wellbeing, and long-term resilience—Industry 5.0 is emerging as a more balanced approach.
Unlike Industry 4.0, Industry 5.0 prioritises people alongside technology. The focus is not just on optimising processes but on ensuring that innovation enhances human expertise, integrates sustainability into core operations, and builds resilience for the future. Instead of automation replacing roles, it is now being designed to work alongside individuals, creating more adaptable and sustainable workplaces.
Booth Welsh is at the forefront of this transition, applying Industry 5.0 principles across its engineering and digital solutions. The company’s expertise in people-centric
design, sustainable engineering, and resilient automation is helping businesses adopt technologies that support both operational efficiency and long-term impact. Recently, Booth Welsh shared their insights at key industry events, reinforcing that Industry 5.0 is not a distant concept—it is already shaping the way industries operate.
The company’s 2024/2025 Impact Report highlights how these principles are being put into practice, showcasing real-world applications that drive innovation while supporting people and the planet. As Ayrshire’s industries evolve, those embracing Industry 5.0
will be best positioned to build a future that is both technologically advanced and sustainable. boothwelsh.co.uk

In recent years Ayrshire Cancer Support (ACS) have recognised that it has become increasingly difficult to raise funds via traditional fundraising channels.
The Covid 19 Pandemic had a huge impact on retail activities - reducing the number of ACS retail shops from 10 to 1, and the restrictions enforced during the periods of ‘lockdown’ and beyond meant traditional, community focused fundraising was also severely limited.
ACS had been reviewing options around digital fundraising prior to the pandemic, however the effects of lockdown expedited our actions and helped establish the value of digital communication tools for all aspects of ACS’ service delivery.
The ACS team made expanding their digital reach a priority in 2022 and have worked to fully utilise digital communication platforms to raise awareness of their services, and to encourage individuals, businesses and grant funders to support their work:
• Social Media platforms
• Launch of Online retail
• E-newsletter
• Direct Debit sign-up online
• Website Refresh
• Working with Marketing Consultants to develop multi-channel campaigns
ACS’ social media channels have shown over 110% engagement growth across all platforms each month, with these stats continuing to climb.
They have also noticed a considerable increase in website visitors, driven from social media, with 16% growth.
ACS have utilised online retail platforms such as eBay to further drive retail sales, with a 51% increase in impressions over the past 6 months.
These digital fundraising methods have shown great success, and the ACS team look forward to seeing how this improves further over the coming months.

Ayrshire Self-Service Launderette celebrates a year of upgrading to card payments, in addition to their coin payments. Since opening in 2020, one of the challenges facing the business was how to upgrade the equipment to meet with the ever-changing needs of the customer. When they introduced their cashless card system in early 2024, it was welcomed by customers old and new.
The pay by coin option is still available for all those that subscribe to the “cash is king!” mantra. However, the option to pay via phone, or with card at the kiosk tablet certainly made it easier for a specific demographic who no
Hartfield House, an established business centre overlooking the Old Racecourse in the heart of Ayr, has long been a place where businesses can grow and connect in a modern and welcoming environment.
With its prime location, ample parking, and flexible spaces, it’s been home to a variety of businesses over the years. Now, they’re excited to share that they have reached a big milestone in their journey, with the completion of the first phase of their extension project.
Hartfield House are especially delighted to have existing tenant, Donnini Apartments, make the first move, moving from downstairs of the original building to the upper floor of the new extension. Donnini’s move into their new home reflects their growth, and we’re excited to have them continue to be part of our community.
The extension has been designed with
longer need to go raiding around for coins or go to the local shop to break notes.
This upgrade is part of their commitment to supplying the locals of Ayr and surrounding
villages with low-cost accessible washing and drying facilities at affordable prices. Their high quality industrial sized machines make light work of any load. Whether it be the weekly washing basket, the king size duvet, or the overflowing post-holiday suitcase!
In addition, this family run business is lining up for a big milestone. Come September, they will celebrate their 5th year in business. This is a long way removed from opening amid the lockdowns of the COVID-19 pandemic. To come out on the other side ready to serve the Ayrshire public as strong as ever, in 2023 they doubled their drying capacity, in 2024 they introduced card payments, let’s see what 2025 brings for this small self-service launderette.

flexibility and modern businesses in mind, providing spaces that can be adapted to suit a wide range of needs. As Hartfield House moves forward with the rest of the development, which will be ready in Spring 2025, and features a ground floor extension attached to the original building, plus two self-contained annex blocks, they are excited about the

As Hartfield House continues to grow, they look forward to seeing how it develops into a hub for businesses to connect, collaborate, and succeed together.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) welcomed its first Hong Kong Air Cargo (HKAC) flight on 11th February 2025, making it the first Far East airline to operate at the airport.
“The arrival of Hong Kong Air Cargo’s flights is a clear sign that our efforts to develop Prestwick as a leading e-commerce hub are delivering results,” said Nico Le Roux, Business Development Director, PIK.
“This comes on top of expansion based on our recently announced partnerships with Royal Mail Group and Chicago Rockford Airport in the US.”
The first Hong Kong Air Cargo flights will be carrying shipments from three of the top four e-commerce platforms – SHEIN, Temu, and TikTok – all of which operate out of Hong Kong.
“The next step is ensuring that the return flights to Hong Kong are fully utilised, presenting a major opportunity for Scottish exporters,” said Le Roux.
“Scottish salmon and whisky are highly sought-after in Asia, and this new route provides a direct and efficient means of getting these premium products to the Hong Kong and mainland Chinese market.”
Lochlea is an independent family-owned farm and distillery based in the heart of Ayrshire, Scotland. They distil and mature their single malt Scotch whisky using barley that they grow and harvest on the farm.
Since their inaugural whisky launch in January 2022, Lochlea have attracted a dynamic, experienced team, drawn from some of the bestknown global whisky brands.
The team are enjoying bringing their core product, Lochlea ‘Our Barley’, annual Cask Strength Batches and limited edition seasonal single malts to the market for customers to enjoy.
The land at Lochlea is important, and not just to the distinctive taste of their whisky. This was the land that Robert Burns tended when he lived at here from 1777-84, inspiring his thinking and development as a poet. Burns toiled the same soil that Lochlea are privileged to grow their malting barley in today. The team likes to think he’d approve.

Glasgow Prestwick Airport (PIK) also celebrated handling its longest-ever piece of freight.
The 67-foot, 24-tonne freight component was part of a consignment for the oil and gas sector, and required three high-loaders and two cranes for safe unloading.
It comes after PIK indicated it is poised to more than triple its cargo freighter movements in the next year.

for businesses looking to boost sustainability and reduce costs. But making the most of the transition requires drivers who are not only comfortable but confident behind the wheel – drivers who may have been exposed to EV myths and concerns. Equally, EVs operate differently from traditionally fuelled vehicles, featuring instant acceleration, regenerative braking and other advanced technologies. The vehicle’s unique characteristics can pose risks if drivers are not properly trained.
Businesses can turn the challenges of EV adoption into opportunities for growth and improvement. When drivers are confident
and prepared, they become instrumental in unlocking the full potential of an electric fleet. With the right strategies, the road to electrification can be a smooth and successful journey—delivering environmental, financial, and operational benefits for years to come. With sale of new ICE vehicles due to end in 2030, now is the time to start paving the way for a greener, safer, and more sustainable future.

For many businesses, financial management is time-consuming, complex, and full of inefficiencies. Chasing invoices, struggling with cash flow, and navigating outdated systems can slow down growth and create unnecessary stress. Dains, a leader in accountancy and business advisory, has strengthened its partnership with Xero, the market-leading cloud accounting platform, to help businesses eliminate admin burdens and take control of their finances.
Manual processes waste time. Automated invoicing, real-time expense tracking, and
seamless integration remove repetitive tasks, reducing errors and keeping finances up to date. Lack of financial visibility holds businesses back. With smart reporting and real-time insights, decision-making becomes faster, clearer, and more confident, no more waiting for reports or second-guessing cash flow.
But digital, innovative tools alone don’t solve these challenges, knowing how to use them effectively does. That’s what sets Dains apart. Businesses don’t just get software; they get expert support, tailored solutions, and hands-on guidance to ensure their accounting works for them, not against them. Whether it’s streamlining workflows, improving cash
flow, or reducing admin stress, Dains ensures businesses of all sizes have the right tools, the right processes, and the right support to thrive.
"This partnership is about more than just software," says Pauline Hogg, Head of Accounts Advisory at Dains. "We’re helping businesses work smarter, reduce stress, and make confident decisions with the right tools and expert support."
Financial management shouldn’t be a burden. With the right technology and expertise, businesses can move to a smarter, more connected way of working, and Dains is making that possible.

Stewart Temperature Solutions has expanded into new, larger premises due to the growing demand for heat pumps, allowing customers to explore units up close and in person, speak directly with an expert and find the right temperature solution for them.
As energy costs continue to rise and sustainability becomes a growing priority, both homeowners and businesses are looking for efficient, ecofriendly ways to power and heat their properties. Stewart Temperature Solutions, a trusted provider of heating and cooling solutions in Ayrshire, specialises in Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar Panels—two technologies that help drastically reduce energy bills and lower carbon footprints.
Air Source Heat Pumps extract heat from the air, even in cold weather, to provide heating and hot water, offering a highly efficient, sustainable alternative to gas or electric heating, cutting costs while reducing environmental impact. With minimal maintenance and a long lifespan, it’s a smart investment for homes and businesses alike.
Solar Panels provide another way to control energy costs by generating electricity on-site. Whether for a home or commercial
property, solar power reduces reliance on the grid and supports longterm energy savings. When combined with an Air Source Heat Pump, the benefits increase as solar energy helps power the heating system, maximising efficiency and reducing costs even further.
With over 30 years of experience, Stewart Temperature Solutions is committed to helping customers transition to smarter, more sustainable energy solutions. Get in touch today to see how these technologies could benefit your home or business.

Air-to-Water Heat Pumps are designed to work with Radiators and Underfloor Heating Systems to provide energy efficient heating throughout the home.
They also require a water tank to supply homes with their hot water requirements. Government Grants are available for Air Source Heat Pumps from £7,500 or £9,000 if on Gas or Oil.
The Solar panels take the sun’s energy and create electricity in DC (Direct Current). The Inverter changes this to AC electricity (Alternating Current) which can then be used to power your home.
Once installed, solar panels can lead to significant long-term savings on electricity bills, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources, providing energy independence.
Also known as Air Conditioning Heat Pumps, these are one of the most energy efficient forms of heating available and are ideal for those looking for a simple, cost-effective way to Heat or Cool the space.
They are easy to install and operate and can quickly provide you with the comfort you need.
A key part of our Strategic Ambition is to act as a Partner of Choice; regionally focused but globally engaged. We have set out to achieve this through impactful contributions, immersive relationships and via innovation and collaboration.
Towards the end of 2024, Ayrshire College signed a Strategic Partnership Agreement with the University of the West of Scotland (UWS). This demonstrates the intention of both partners to strengthen and develop links to deliver a vision for regional skills; one that will have wide ranging benefits for staff, students and the wider community.
A key component of this is a focus on delivering a comprehensive skills portfolio in areas of strategic importance within the Ayrshire Growth Deal and Regional Economic Strategy. This includes digital, aerospace, engineering, construction, healthcare and
The Nethermills Hydro Scheme, located on the River Ayr, has reached a significant milestone by generating its 1,000,000th unit of electricity. This achievement underscores the organisations dedication to sustainable energy and providing positive impacts for the local community.
Operational since February 2022, the hydro scheme employs a 90kW Archimedean screw turbine to harness the river's flow. Initially predicted to produce approximately 320 megawatt hours (MWh) of electricity annuallyenough to power around 110 homes each year, the scheme has produced its 1,000,000 unit earlier than expected.
Wholly owned and operated by Energy Agency Renewables Ltd, a not-for-profit subsidiary of the Energy Agency based in Ayr, Nethermills Hydro Scheme was designed to prioritise the environment, featuring
nursing, creative industries and enterprise.
Further afield, at the start of 2025, our Scottish-Canadian Aerospace and Advanced Manufacturing Collaborative Learning Project established new international partnerships. This came to life in January when six staff members from Ayrshire College spent a week visiting Centennial College and Durham College, both in Ontario, Canada.
The trip, which was the first part of a Scottish Education Exchange Programme: Test and Learn Project, backed by The Scottish Government, has been a hugely beneficial experience for all involved. All three institutions have ambitions of growing their provision to support the ever-increasing demand for high value skills in these key sectors. This project aims to share best practice, common challenges and technological solutions. The development of Scottish/Canadian Women in STEM Network is an early outcome.
We are excited to showcase the activity and experience across our region when our new Canadian connections visit Ayrshire soon. These exchanges and new lines of communication will enable a greater understanding of the delivery models across both nations and how they best meet the needs of employers.

smolt chutes and eel passes to facilitate fish migration. This approach ensures the renewable energy production coexists harmoniously with local wildlife.
The clean, green electricity produced is primarily supplied to the neighbouring Ayrshire College, with any surplus exported to the national grid.
Beyond energy production, Nethermills Hydro Scheme serves as an educational resource in its own right, offering learning opportunities for local schools and colleges. Recent visits by Electrical Engineering students gave valuable, real-world insights into renewable energy technology and the mechanics behind hydroelectric power generation.
The attainment of the 1,000,000-unit generation milestone not only highlights the project's success in renewable energy production, but as the scheme continues to operate, it stands as a testament to the
Spring is upon us, and we can now put our winter woollies away for the next five months. Perhaps that’s a little bit optimistic in Scotland, but however it works out let’s at least look forward to the slightly warmer days and the lighter evenings coming in. Spring is always a time for feeling positive and looking ahead to fresh opportunities, and that’s certainly true for the DYW Ayrshire team.
The focus for spring is Digital Innovation and in today’s fast-evolving digital world, equipping young people with the right skills is essential to help them transition into their first careers, whether that be in the digital world or any other industry they might choose. Supporting innovation of all kinds is at the very heart of the work
we do with local secondary schools and community groups across Ayrshire. We work with teachers and students to help them establish innovative business-based projects that provide young people with the opportunity to design, launch and market their own business ideas. In the 10 years since DYW has been in operation, our Ayrshire team, in conjunction with Ayrshire College have worked on over 150 successful projects, investing £700,000 in our young people’s futures. The exciting new startup businesses have included barista bars, hair and beauty salons, bee keeping, construction, cycle maintenance, rural skills and many more.
It is an inspiration to see the students involved in these projects going through the formation stages, creating
their own brands, establishing and marketing their business, earning real money and learning how to sustain the business. It provides a great insight into the world of work and is a fantastic start for the young people, many of whom have gone on to successful careers in their own industry. We’ll be sharing more on this in the coming months.
Why not come and join us and share in some of the success.
Mike Stewart, Storm Aviation

The Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Innovative Projects Showcase took place on Monday 18th November. Hosted at Ayrshire College Kilmarnock Campus, this event brought together young people, educators and employers to hear about the innovative projects funded through DYW Ayrshire across North, South and East Ayrshire.
Educators from Greenwood Academy, Grange Academy, Queen Margaret Academy, and Lockhart spoke about the impact that the funding has had on creating new projects and pathways for students in the respective schools. The audience also heard from a representative from the Trindlemoss Day Centre about the impact of the funding in creating opportunities for their residents.
The audience then heard from a local authority representative on the impact of the projects and then from the Vice Principal, Skills and Enterprise at Ayrshire College, Anne Campbell, on the College’s involvement over the years.
The event culminated in an opportunity for attendees to meet with the students involved at their showcase which included the schools who presented in the morning along with Prestwick Academy. Attendees were also treated to the talents of students from Largs Academy and Girvan Academy who provided barista support on the day.
Since inception in 2016, over £700,000 has been awarded to innovative projects across Ayrshire by DYW Ayrshire, funded by the Scottish Government. This has created over 150 projects across secondary schools and community groups and includes: Barista, Hair and Beauty, Construction, Bee Keeping, Cycle Maintenance, Upcycling, Rural Skills and many more.
The DYW Ayrshire Innovative Project Fund is part of an annual Scottish Government fund to help expand employer involvement in education and the team were delighted to be joined by many businesses on the day along with local MSPs Brian Whittle MSP and Carol Mochan MSP.
DYW Ayrshire Regional Lead Gillian Longmuir commented
We were delighted to welcome along a number of schools and community projects to showcase the fantastic work taking place in schools across Ayrshire. It is unique to Ayrshire that we have this ringfenced funding and we hope this continues for many years to come. These projects could not be the success they are today without our key partners and I would like to thank Ayrshire College and our Local Authorities for their continued support.
Vice Principal, Skills and Enterprise at Ayrshire College, Anne Campbell, said,
We have worked collaboratively with DYW Ayrshire since 2017 to offer these innovation projects. We look forward to continuing to work with partners to focus on offering new opportunities in key sectors of interest to Ayrshire such as engineering and aerospace, construction and net zero, food and drink and the visitor economy.
In February, Marr College hosted an engaging and exciting Careers Fair, bringing together professionals from a range of industries to inspire and guide S2-S6 pupils. The event gave students a fantastic chance to explore career options, ask questions, and make valuable connections.
There was a great mix of industries, including healthcare, aerospace, construction, engineering, law, and public services. Professionals from NHS, Collins Aerospace, Morrisons and Buzzworks, Ashleigh Construction, Transport Scotland, and Police Scotland shared their experiences and advice. Local businesses and national employers also helped showcase different career paths.
The impact on pupils was huge.
Speaking to solicitors helped me understand different legal career paths and confirmed my ambition to study law,” said an S5 pupil. Another student interested in engineering found the fair incredibly helpful:
“Talking to professionals gave me a much clearer idea of what I need to do to achieve my goals.”
Marr College is so grateful to everyone who took part. The event was a great success, giving students valuable knowledge, confidence, and inspiration for their future careers.

Ayrshire Chamber’s Education Team have been supporting Travel & Tourism Classes within North and South Ayrshire this school year with meaningful employer interactions including workplace visits and virtual sessions.
During Winter, Travel & Tourism Classes from 3 Ayrshire Secondary Schools, St Matthew’s Academy, Garnock Academy and Prestwick Academy visited the prestigious Royal Troon Golf Club for a workplace visit.
Young people on each of the visits received a highly informative tour of the Clubhouse which covered the history of Royal Troon and some of roles within the business including concierge, booking, membership and food and beverage.
Having hosted the 152nd Open Championship earlier in the year, Royal Troon were in a fantastic position to inform pupils about their important part within the travel and tourism industry.
On November 29, 2024, Jake Murray, owner of Donnini Apartments, visited Kilwinning Academy to discuss business operations as part of the Higher Business Management curriculum. He shared insights into how his business was founded, its operational processes, marketing strategies, and overall structure.
Pupils from St Matthew’s Academy commented,
We very much enjoyed travelling to Royal Troon for a visit, on our arrival we met with Stephen Anthony who showed us around and told us all about the history of golf. We learned about how Americans are the biggest group of international tourists who play golf at Royal Troon between May and September and that approximately 1 in every 250 job in Scotland is related to the golf industry. We did also enjoy our juice and shortbread at the end of the tour.
Claire Bain, Teacher of Business and DYW Coordinator commented,
Senior Business pupils thoroughly enjoyed learning about starting your own business and looking at some of the properties that Jake rents out. Pupils will be able to pick this business for their business assignment next year.
Your knowledge is important. Share your expertise, raise awareness of your business or organisation, and help young people in Ayrshire develop essential industry skills. Contact our team for more information at info@dywayrshire.com
S6 Prestwick Academy pupil, Sarah, has been gaining valuable real-world experience through her work placement at Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce. Attending every Wednesday for two hours throughout the school year, she has had the opportunity to explore different aspects of the business, from administration, social media support to event planning.
In December, Sarah supported the Elf on the Shelf social media campaign which
consisted of a daily post of the elves relating to a career, helping to engage young people with different job opportunities in a fun and festive way. Sarah created a content calendar for this campaign, took photos and scheduled them across 4 social media platforms.
In addition to her social media involvement, Sarah has assisted with administrative tasks and helped prepare for Chamber and DYW Ayrshire events, gaining insight into the planning and coordination
In September, Bridgend Motor Group welcomed a pupil from Kilwinning Academy on a week-long work placement.
Alison Mitchell, HR/Payroll Manager, said:
It’s been great to have April doing her school work placement with us this week in the Bridgend Motor Group Kilwinning Car Sales Department.”
“April is in 4th year at Garnock Community Campus and is interested in sales as a career.
She applied directly to us as Bridgend was somewhere that appealed to her. April has spent her week in the sales department shadowing the sales team sitting in with customers and learning the sales process from start to finish.
April told staff:
required for successful business networking.
Sarah’s time at Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce highlights the importance of work-based learning and the benefits of partnerships between schools and local businesses.
If you could offer a pupil work experience, our team would love to hear from you. Please scan the QR code for more information or email workplacement@ayrshirechamber.org
It’s been good, different from what I imagined - much better in fact. I’ve got on well with everyone and think I’d like to go into car sales in the future. The staff are very nice. The best bit of the week was being part of the team.
If you would like to inspire a young person like Sarah or April, you can start your journey in offering a work placement by scanning the QR code and completing the Work Placement Application Form.
Throughout January, DYW nationally celebrated a decade of Developing the Young Workforce with the #DYWDecade social media campaign.
Preparing young people for the world of work is a collective effort, and this milestone wouldn’t have been possible without the dedication of employers, partner organisations, educators, and professionals who support young people.
In Ayrshire, we reflected on some of our biggest moments—from standout events and school achievements to recognising our Chairs and celebrating our successes. None of this would be possible without the support of our employer network.
We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who has participated in DYW activities, helping to inspire and prepare the future workforce—creating benefits for both young people and industries alike.
While the campaign has ended, the opportunity to make a difference remains. In as little as one hour, you could inspire a group of young people and help shape their future careers. We encourage you to speak to our team and learn about what’s involved and the benefits.
Monday 13th January 2025 was a landmark date for the Port of Troon – one of two Scottish ports owned and operated by Associated British Ports (ABP). It marked the maiden voyage of Caledonian MacBrayne’s (CalMac’s) MV Glen Sannox on its first-ever scheduled sailing between Troon and Brodick on the Isle of Arran. For ABP, this was the culmination of several years of hard work to redevelop, refurbish and repurpose the Port’s East Pier to the specifications required for the ferry service to operate.
Of course, the Port of Troon is no stranger to hosting ferry services, having previously been part of both P&O and Stena Line networks to Northern Ireland.
The terminal is a new purpose-built structure providing a large sitting area for foot passengers, with amazing views out to sea and to the Glen Sannox as it executes its 190° turning operation to dock.
On the west side of the Port, we have lately welcomed a few interesting vessels such as the tallship Thalassa, cruise ships Hebridean Princess, Island Sky and Greg Mortimer, as well as superyachts Berilda and more notoriously Kismet on its maiden journey from Germany.
Beyond welcoming passenger vessels, the Port of Troon is also a large hub for timber shipping from Argyll and other areas of Scotland, destined to be processed for the house building industry, papermills, chipboard or wood pellets factories in Ayrshire. Fishing also remains an important proportion of business in Troon.
Troon is a versatile port, and just like Arran, is very much open for business.
It would be our pleasure to provide any additional information and discuss your requirements. Get in touch via: aurelia.peddie@abports. co.uk

Interface supports businesses in their research and development goals, by finding them the right academic partner in Scotland.
The free service which is impartial (we work with all of Scotland’s universities, research institutes and colleges) saves businesses time and money in identifying and accessing academic expertise, research, funding, and facilities which enables them to solve challenges, innovate, grow and ultimately become more sustainable.
One such business is Leanne Cairns Millinery, based in rural Ayrshire. Leanne saw potential in the wedding and events sector for individual bespoke hats that could be created in exactly the right colour for matching outfits, as well as being made from recycled materials that offered ethically sourced and manufactured hats.
Interface found expert resources at two universities – firstly a group of Fashion Marketing students at Glasgow Caledonian University carried out market research into the 18-30 age group, which clarified that this segment was eco-conscious and did not want to buy fashion that contributed to landfill.
Then Edinburgh Napier University supported work on 3D product designing, prototyping and development.
Leanne said: “The collaboration was absolutely brilliant. I would say to any small business, if you have a great idea and you have good innovative thinking, I would go to Interface.”
Leanne Cairns Millinery became a South Ayrshire Carbon Champion with the prototype which was developed as a result, and its lowcarbon output.

There are few businesses in the country that are not affected by rising labour, energy and materials costs, skills shortages, supply chain issues, and increasing competitive pressures.
In an increasingly uncertain world, agility and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances are not just a ‘nice to have’ but an essential requirement. For this reason, innovation and the ability to evolve is critical to the long-term health and prosperity of a business, and increasingly this takes the form of automation – whether of manufacturing, processes or analysis – in what is loosely called Industry 4.0.
In a previous life Seneca Enterprise
was known as Broadway Partners, trading locally as Arran Broadband, providing critical broadband services to homes and businesses.
Fast forward a few years, and the original founders now focus exclusively on the connectivity and digital needs of SMEs, in Ayrshire and beyond, based around the full range of communications technologies – from Fibre and WiFi, through Private 5G, to satellite.
Wherever your business is on its digital transformation journey, the next step is the most important you will take – but it needn’t be scary. So if you are looking to track and control vehicles and other assets across a warehouse or worksite; or apply AI to CCTV in support of worker safety; or introduce augmented reality headsets to supplement
workforce training; or simply improve your broadband connection to the outside world, reach out to Seneca Enterprise.
