Business community shines bright

As winter sunsets glow along the Ayrshire coastline and our thoughts turn to festive gatherings, I am delighted to introduce this Winter Edition of our magazine - one that celebrates our Chamber members and everything that makes Ayrshire sparkle.

This October, many of you helped deliver another successful Business Week. Across ten major events, we welcomed more than 1,100 attendees. The week opened at Dumfries House in partnership with Scottish Edge, where we were honoured to be joined by CEO Evelyn McDonald - an inspiring leader who understands what Scottish businesses need to thrive.

We also hosted our record-breaking B2B Exhibition, with over 90 businesses showcasing their products and services, and an exceptional

DYW Leadership Lunch at the Brig O’Doon. Pupils from across Ayrshire were inspired by the career stories of Billy Bowie, from Billy Bowie Special Projects and David Smith, Chairman of Ashleigh Building.

The week concluded in true celebratory fashion with the glitz and glamour of our Annual Business Awards Dinner, supported by principal sponsor Business Gateway. It was an evening of connection, excellence and pride as 60 outstanding finalists competed across 17 award categories. Congratulations to all involved!

By the time this edition reaches you, we will be reflecting on the likely challenging outcomes of the Chancellor’s 26 November Budget. As we celebrate our collective achievements here in Ayrshire, we are reminded that we are part of a resilient, agile and world-class business community - ready to navigate whatever opportunities and challenges lie ahead.

Thank you for your continued support. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous, adventurous and healthy 2026.

Ayrshire Chamber gears up for its 2026 Annual Dinner

On Friday 27th March, Ayrshire Chamber of Commerce will hold its popular Annual Dinner at Trump Turnberry, where guests will hear inspiring stories from our keynote speaker, Mike Soutar – respected business leader, entrepreneur and media executive.

Many will also recognise Mike from the BBC’s ‘The Apprentice’, where he put candidates through their paces as one of Lord Sugar’s trusted advisors.

We look forward to welcoming Mike to Trump Turnberry in March, as he shares insights on leadership, innovation, and what it takes to succeed in a competitive world.

We are also pleased to introduce our 2026 Principal Sponsor, Dash Claims

Sandy Hillan, Director of Dash Claims:

“The Chamber plays a fantastic role in

championing local enterprise, encouraging collaboration, and creating opportunities for businesses of all sizes.

“We’re delighted to support this flagship event, which celebrates success and brings together the people who are shaping the future of business in our region.”

During the night, the 2026 winner of the Business Excellence Award will also be announced, and the night will be hosted by local legend, Robbie Duncan.

The Chamber team looks forward to bringing together our Partners and Members for a night of networking and celebration at the Trump Turnberry Resort.

Councillor Tony Gurney, Cabinet Member for Green Environment and Economy, said:

“We are committed to being a net-zero Council and it is fantastic that this is being met during construction of the new Campus. The facility, when complete, will not only be a great place for our young people to learn and thrive but will meet high standards for energy efficiency.”

Hubb - A gift of theatre, laughter, and creativity for Ayrshire

This December brings THE Magic of Theatre to Ayrshire - the long-awaited opening of the M&M Hubb Theatre.

The Hubb’s story began in 2016 with a vision to create a welcoming place where young people could discover the magic of performance and where families could come together to share in the fun. Inside, the 150seat theatre, mirrored dance studios, café, and function space have been designed with imagination at their heart.

The dream belongs to Ayrshire own M&M Theatrical Productions, founded in a front bedroom more than 30 years ago by Chris Mitchell and Maggie Holloway, the company has grown to entertain over 3 million children every year. Though Maggie retired in 2020,

Chris kept faith in the idea of a theatre dedicated especially to children.

The journey was not without obstacles. The M&M Hubb cost £1.5 million and entirely self-funded. The whole project grounded to a halt when the pandemic forced theatres to close overnight. But the M&M Team refused to give up and like a Phoenix from the ashes

The M&M Hubb Theatre will open its doors this December with a magical pantomime, Beauty & The Beast. All prices are kids prices at just £15, making theatre accessible for families and children of all ages.

The M&M Hubb it is the fulfilment of a dream years in the making, and a gift of theatre, laughter, and creativity to children and families across the community. It stands

as living proof that ambition, perseverance, and love for the arts can overcome even the most daunting obstacles.

Transforming vision across Ayrshire

This year has been one of celebration and innovation for Urquhart Opticians, as the independent group proudly introduced smart eyewear across its Ayrshire locations. The launch marked a significant step forward in combining cutting-edge technology with the personalised care that Urquharts is known for.

Smart eyewear has opened new possibilities for patients, particularly those living with visual impairment. Features such as audio navigation, voice assistance, and integrated cameras have empowered individuals to interact more confidently with the world around them.

For many, tasks that once felt challengingreading signage, recognising familiar faces, or capturing moments - have become easier and more intuitive.

Urquharts has seen firsthand the emotional and practical impact this technology can have, and the team has taken great pride in supporting patients through demonstrations, tailored fittings, and ongoing guidance.

A standout moment this year was the exclusive launch of Oakley Meta at the Prestwick practice. Blending iconic Oakley design with next-generation smart functionality, Oakley Meta has attracted interest from tech enthusiasts and sports lovers alike. Its arrival in Prestwick not only reinforces Urquharts’ commitment to offering world-leading products locally but also highlights the practice’s ambition to keep Ayrshire at the forefront of optical innovation.

As the year draws to a close, Urquharts celebrates the positive change these advancements have sparked in patients’ daily lives.

With technology continuing to evolve, the team looks forward to supporting even more people in seeing and experiencing the world in new ways.

Underinsurance: causes & consequences

Robust insurance cover is a key element of effective risk management.

A single uninsured event can lead to severe financial disruption, halt operations and threaten long-term viability.

MacKay Corporate highlight several factors that contribute to underinsurance among organisations:

• Outdated property valuations - Business owners may overlook the need to routinely update the value of their buildings, equipment or inventory, resulting in cover that doesn’t accurately reflect current replacement costs.

• Business growth without policy changes

- Business owners may add staff, change locations or increase assets without adjusting their insurance cover.

• Misunderstanding policy terms - Leading to false assumptions about what is covered,

when cover applies and how indemnity limits are structured.

• Neglecting emerging risks - Business owners may fail to account for new threats such as cyberattacks, climate-related events or supply chain disruptions that may not be covered under standard policies. Yet, despite these risks, underinsurance remains a frequently overlooked vulnerability.

The financial and operational consequences of underinsurance can be significant, including:

• Partial or denied claims - Insurance may not fully cover the cost of losses. This can leave the organisation responsible for the remaining expenses.

• Lengthy downtime - Without adequate cover an organisation may struggle to meet ongoing expenses after a loss event,

increasing the risk of prolonged closure or shutdown

• Regulatory and legal exposure - Insufficient liability insurance can leave organisations vulnerable to legal claims and regulatory penalties

• Reputational damage - Delays in service or failure to meet obligations due to uninsured losses can erode client trust and damage long-term relationships

Whether due to outdated valuations or budget decisions, carrying insufficient insurance cover can leave organisations exposed.

25 years of Geraldo’s

In March 2000, after many years working across the leisure industry, Toni Dawson took the plunge and opened her own shop in Largs. Sugar and Spice quickly became a must-visit stop for ice cream and sweet treats in Largs! In fact, business boomed so much that in 2005, Toni brought ice cream production on-site, drawing on mum Caroline’s extensive experience!

Sadly, 2005 also brought tragedy when the family lost their patriarch Gerald “Geraldo” Dawson. In memory of him, Toni branded her ice cream as “Geraldo’s”. Fast-forward 11 years and it was time for a full refresh. Sugar and Spice became Geraldo’s and was soon a one-stop-shop for luxury ice cream,

handmade chocolates and premium gifts and spirits.

Now, in 2025, the business continues to go from strength to strength. With the acquisition of a new warehouse, ice cream production has increased to serve Kelburn Castle’s Creamery, as well as providing luxury ice cream for weddings and events across Ayrshire. Plus, building on their reputation for fine whisky, Geraldo’s is the retail partner for the Inverclyde Whisky Festival!

Toni Dawson, Owner & Managing Director:

“I never thought 25 years ago that Geraldo’s would be what it is today; we’ve gone from a seaside sweetshop to Ayrshire’s only 5-Star tourist shop, and I couldn’t be prouder of everything we’ve achieved in that time. We owe so much to the people of Ayrshire for their continued support, and I hope we’re still here for them in another 25 years!”

WELCOME FROM OUR REGIONAL LEAD

It feels like only last month I was writing the introduction to our Spring Edition of our DYW section and yet here we are hurtling towards the festive season and end of the calendar year. What a year it has been!

Celebration is the theme of this edition of the Chambers Magazine and DYW Ayrshire have plenty to celebrate. From sponsoring the Annual Dinner in March to celebrating 10 years of DYW Nationally there has been a lot of proud moments, not just for me and the team but for our education, public sector and private sector partners across Ayrshire.

In Ayrshire, to date, over 160 innovative projects have been funded, hundreds of employer referrals to create opportunities for young people and thousands of attendees at our events. Our collaborative approach across Ayrshire

continues to bring employers and young people closer together.

I would also like to congratulate Emergency One who were the worthy winners of the DYW Award at the Ayrshire Business Awards. The judging panel were delighted with the volume and calibre of all applications this year- a true testament to the inspiring work that is being done by employers of all shapes and sizes.

Our celebrations will continue into 2026. We will be holding a celebration event in March to launch the publication of our DYW Ayrshire 10 years on report looking at the Innovative Projects Programme across both our community and schools programme.

Moving into 2026 we continue to have a focus on sustainability across our DYW

DEVELOPING AYRSHIRE’S YOUNG WORKFORCE AWARD WINNERS

Emergency One is delighted to be recognised with the Developing Ayrshire Young Workforce Award, celebrating our commitment to creating clear pathways from school into skilled employment. Over the past two years, we have partnered with Robert Burns Academy and Egger to deliver a tailored pre-apprenticeship programme through the Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) course. Senior pupils gain hands-on workshop training, real-world

industry experience, and a guaranteed apprenticeship interview.

Participation has doubled since the programme began, with the majority of students progressing into apprenticeships at Emergency One. We support students with PPE, mentorship, and day-release college learning, helping them develop both practical skills and employability. Beyond the programme, we engage with schools and community initiatives across Ayrshire,

programme. Our key focus will be to link our innovative school projects with locally aligned sectors. This will help enhance the industry focus within the project along with providing young people with the critical skills required for their future roles. We would be keen to speak to any business willing to give their time, resources or expertise to support these projects.

On behalf of my team I wish all of our partners, employers, educators and young people a happy and successful end to 2025 and look forward to working again with them in the future.

inspiring the next generation of engineers. This award recognises our dedication to empowering young people and shaping a skilled, motivated workforce for the region’s engineering and manufacturing sector.

DYW AYRSHIRE LEADERSHIP LUNCH INSPIRES AND CONNECTS LOCAL BUSINESSES

113 guests gathered at Brig o’ Doon House Hotel for DYW Ayrshire’s second Leadership Lunch, held as part of the Ayrshire Business Week programme.

The event, brought together employers, educators, and students for a day of inspiration, connection and leadership insights.

David Smith of Ayr United and Ashleigh Construction and Billy Bowie of Kilmarnock Football Club and Billy Bowie Special Projects Ltd shared their personal journeys — from humble beginnings to leading successful businesses and sports organisations. Their talks were followed by an engaging Q&A session, giving attendees the opportunity to gain valuable advice from two of Ayrshire’s most recognisable business figures.

AND SCHOOLS

25 employers from a range of sectors purchased tickets to attend, joining representatives from local schools and colleges.

Pupils in attendance were sponsored by DYW funding and profits generated from other ticket sales ensuring that young people across Ayrshire could benefit from the experience.

Speaking after the event, DYW Ayrshire Regional Lead Gillian Longmuir said:

Our Leadership Lunch continues to be a highlight of the Ayrshire Business Week calendar. It’s an opportunity to celebrate leadership, inspire the next generation and strengthen the partnership between education and business across the region.

PUPILS INSPIRED BY FIRST-EVER OUTDOOR CAREERS EVENT AT CRAWICK MULTIVERSE

The first-ever joint outdoor careers event between DYW Ayrshire and DYW Dumfries & Galloway took place at the stunning Crawick Multiverse in Sanquhar, bringing together employers, educators, and pupils for a unique day of career exploration and handson learning.

The Outdoor Careers Event welcomed representatives from a wide range of industries including agriculture, engineering, energy, food and drink, environmental and tourism. Employers in attendance included Tarff Valley, National Farmers Union, Forestry & Land Scotland, Jones Bros Civil Engineers, Natural Power, Kings Foundation, Countryside

Learning Scotland, CWP Energy, BayWa Renewable Energy, Dumfries & Galloway and Ayrshire Climate Hubs, Quality Meat Scotland and DG Owl.

A total of 178 pupils attended from six secondary schools in Dumfries & Galloway and two in Ayrshire.

The event offered a valuable opportunity for pupils to experience real-world activities such as surveying, bridge building, digger operation and even wildlife tracking, while employers benefited from engaging directly with young people interested in their industries.

INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW FESTIVAL OF FLIGHT

The international Ayr Show Festival of Flight is Scotland’s largest free festival event and only major airshow. Since its debut in September 2023 it has promoted South Ayrshire internationally generating an estimated economic impact in excess of £40 million.

Importantly, the event and display program are used to promote career opportunities at the Prestwick Aerospace hub. Key to this is a week STEM event held at Prestwick Airport where 800 S2 pupils across South Ayrshire learn what an aerospace career with STEM would look like for them.

Across the week, facilitated by the airshow strategic partner, theSKYLAB, pupils and teachers engage in a rotation of themed activities linked to the aerospace company’s areas of STEM based business. Here they can see what happens at the Prestwick aerospace hub, what steps to take to get a job and, perhaps most importantly, meet the aerospace engineers themselves to hear what life is like as an aerospace engineer.

However, it is not just the S2 pupils that get to see into the

life of a Prestwick Aerospace Engineer! On the Wednesday of the STEM week, promoted and supported by DYW Ayrshire, the activities are open to 400 members of the public so they can gain an insight into the fantastic career opportunities available.

Feedback has shown these events to be positively impactful with attendees being more aware of STEM opportunities at the aerospace hub and knowing how to pursue them. Importantly, that university is not the only way to gain a well paid, highly skilled job as this can also be achieved with an apprenticeship. There is no doubt that these events have a growing role to play in future airshows.

Thanks to GE Aerospace, Collins aerospace, Spirit Aerosystems, BAE Systems, Woodward aerospace, NATS, Storm Aviation, Ryanair (PAM Ltd), Ayrshire College, Leonardo, THALES, RAF, Royal Navy, Prestwick Airport, South Ayrshire Council and DYW Ayrshire.

SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT

MARR COLLEGE STUDENTS VISIT BLACKTHORN SALT HQ FOR AN INSPIRING BUSINESS EXPERIENCE

Our team was delighted to welcome students from Marr College to Blackthorn HQ on the 25th of September. It was a real pleasure to take the group around the world’s only Thorn Tower and the Blackthorn Pan House. We shared insights into our work and showed how traditional Eastern European salt-making methods of the 16th century influence and inspire us, despite having the heritage of the old Scottish salt-boiling methods on our doorstep here in Ayrshire. The students witnessed the ways in which older methods are being combined with modern innovation and sustainable practices to produce a multi-

award-winning product that is valued by chefs and customers across the globe today.

It was such a lovely visit — the students were a credit to their school: curious, thoughtful, enthusiastic, and full of great questions. Astonishingly, each of them is a young entrepreneur, already running their own business while still at school, incredibly impressive!

Seeing the next generation being so passionate about innovation and business is one of the great joys of our job, and it’s so important for the future.

Visits like this always leave us with plenty to think about - we often find that we learn just as much from our guests as they

BAE SYSTEMS ROADSHOW

Queen Margaret Academy was delighted to welcome the BAE Systems STEM Roadshow earlier this month, an engaging and thought-provoking theatre production created in collaboration with BAE Systems, the Royal Air Force, and the Royal Navy.

The annual Roadshow aims to inspire the next generation to consider careers in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) through a lively, interactive performance aligned to the National Curriculum. This year’s theme focused on the ever-evolving world of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it is shaping our future.

Pupils were introduced to AI as a powerful tool that, much like Google five years ago, can be used creatively and responsibly to enhance learning and innovation. The presenters explored real-world applications of AI in education and industry, demonstrated how to identify deepfakes and misinformation, and highlighted the importance of uniquely human skills such as creativity, empathy, and ethical decision-making in an AI-driven world.

A highlight of the event was the appearance of Lexi, the AIpowered robotic dog, who stole the show while helping pupils understand how technology

do from us! Thank you to Marr College!”

Blackthorn founders, Gregorie and Whirly Marshall

Feedback from the school was positive, stating:

“The trip was a great success and I wanted to thank the Chamber for organising this for us. I took 10 S6 students who are my Young Enterprise class. These students are all running their own business and it was a great opportunity to find out how to become successful. We were given a tour of the salt production and a tasting opportunity – which went down very well!

The visit was a fantastic opportunity for our young people to learn, question, and imagine the possibilities of AI in their own futures. Queen Margaret Academy is proud to support initiatives that promote digital literacy and inspire pupils to explore STEM pathways with confidence and curiosity.

An Ayrshire firm is keen to spread its wings as part of a nationwide expansion

Irvine-based EssJay Electrical Services are plugging into success from their base in the town’s South Newmoor Industrial Estate.

The team, headed by Steve Roberts, are a major contractor for the Ministry of Defence and carry out work on more than 5,000 of their homes across Scotland.

It’s a major task for the family-run firm, who work on properties from Dumfries to Wick on a weekly basis.

But Roberts, 48, has his eye firmly set on the company’s continued growth - with local work just as important to their strategy.

He said: “It all started with me doing soffit lighting during Covid and from there we began subcontracting for a local housing agency which gave us an avenue into the MoD work.

“We’ll do all of the planned maintenance work, bathroom refurbs and EICRs (Electrical Installation Condition Reports)... it’s a lot of work but it’s a challenge we love.”

Steve insists the feet of the company, which is NAPIT, Trust Mark and Safe Contractor accredited, are firmly on the ground as he looks to widen their reach.

Son Connor and wife, Annie, are part of the small but dedicated team who are helping to grow the brand from their corner of North Ayrshire.

He said: “I don’t view us as some kind of success story - it’s never a success until you reach the end and that’s how I always approach things.

“You can always keep improving and growing.

“The challenge now is to increase our reach in the local area and beyond and we’re really up for it.

In a time of evolving tourism strategies, one Ayrshire charity is leading by example. Friends of Dundonald Castle (SC031541) has transformed a centuriesold royal stronghold into a thriving community and heritage hub, proving that local passion can fuel sustainable tourism. This success was nationally recognised when the organisation proudly won the 2024 Scottish Thistle Award for Celebrating Thriving Communities first at the West Regional final and then at the National Awards in Glasgow.

Since then, momentum has only continued to grow. In 2024 the Castle and Visitor Centre welcomed more than 29,000 visitors, making it one of South Ayrshire’s most popular

ABW annual awards celebrate Ayrshire’s women in business Award-winning community tourism at Dundonald Castle

The Ayrshire Business Women (ABW) network hosted its Annual Awards and Afternoon Tea at Rowallan Castle’s Glasshouse Restaurant on Wednesday 27th August, celebrating entrepreneurial excellence and community spirit.

The sold-out event welcomed members and guests for an afternoon of connection and inspiration. Keynote speaker Fiona Campbell, founder of The Professional Growth Company, delivered a powerful session on mindset and wellbeing, offering practical insights into the link between thought and performance.

With a record number of nominations, the awards honoured outstanding achievements across Ayrshire’s business community. Judged by an independent panel led by Kirste Johnston, the winners were presented with their trophies by Councillor Claire Leitch, Provost of East Ayrshire:

attractions. The Hub’s impact, however, reaches far beyond tourism: it provides employment for local people, volunteering opportunities across generations, and a welcoming space for groups tackling isolation, from Knit & Natter and archaeology clubs to dementia cafés and youth initiatives.

As General Manager Dr Kirsteen Croll explains: “This isn’t just about bringing people in, it’s about meaningful connection and giving our community a voice.”

Having successfully secured planning permission to extend the Visitor and Community Centre, the charity is preparing to expand. With demand for space now outstripping capacity, the extension will provide much-needed room for school groups, events, and local enterprise, as well as an enhanced visitor experience.

At a time when many communities feel left out of the tourism economy, Dundonald is demonstrating what’s possible when heritage, community and enterprise work hand in hand. Dundonald Castle may have royal origins, but its future is being built by the community itself, brick by brick, award by award.

One of the companies achieving their first year of the Net Zero Accelerator is Rail Spares Ltd. As part of the East Ayrshire Council cohort, they learned about carbon literacy and the ability to gather their own data to provide carbon accounts.

Rail Spares are committed to making their business sustainable into the future and reducing costs. This was reflected in their Ayrshire Chamber Award win for Growth Business of the Year (0-10 employees).
