THE FOWLER BUILDING Built in 1902, the Fowler Building, is currently located in Durham, North Carolina, and currently serves mainly as an industrial building for an American Tobacco company, among other commercial usages, such as restaurants and corporate offices. With an overall square footage of 125,000, this building offers a great space for an upcoming hotel.

WHY CHARLOTTE? This location is adequate for business travelers, with Charlotte being the largest, business-driven, metropolitan area for individual and company growth.

Uptown Charlotte offers a variety of places for travelers to unwind after long days of business travel and meetings. The Brookhill Hotel will be located on E 5th Street, allowing guests to navigate easily around uptown, minutes away from Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Although the target audience for The Brookhill Hotel is for business travelers, it is important to consider the audience the city of Charlotte attracts. Because sports is a contributing factor to Charlotte’s economy, The Brookhill Hotel will make sure to accommodate sport events, meetings, and even athletes traveling for games through amenities located on the plaza level.

BUSINESS TRAVEL FROM THE TRAVELER’S PERSPECTIVE DEFINING THE PROBLEM

• Business travel continues to increase since the last decade • Positive experiences when traveling: sense of personal development, inspiring new environments, & “break” from an everyday work-related life • GOAL: Disassociate business travel and stress

CONCEPT IMPLEMENTATION The purpose of this concept design is ... to inspire a luxurious design with natural, yet electric elements that inspires guests to engage and discover networking opportunities without the restrains that are associated in the business world. This concept helps clarify the joining connection between professional and social structures in a professional setting that is hosting guests from various sectors. The idea of interconnectedness combined with this concept allows the user of space to emerge from their rooted framework into a spread of new opportunities provided within the hotel.

CHECKING IN

Hotel guests are welcomed by the a curved reception desk placed ahead of the main enterance thats wrapped in a black Saint Laurent marble laminate print.

WELCOMING FIRST IMPRESSION

Veneer acoustical ceiling panels installed in the main lobby helped controlled noises levels while also warming up the space through its light Walnut tones.

The design of the hotel lobby was inspired by the concept, “Rooted�, which was represented through organic lighting shapes that creates a welcoming first impression to its guests.

Leafy chandeliers continue to liven up the space over the walnut ceiling panels.

Meeting rooms located across the lobby encourage guests to occupy the waiting areas and spark conversation.

In order to invite guests in the space, televisions screens are placed throughout displaying one of Charlotte’s largest contributors to its market: sports entertainment.

While keeping the idea of interconnectedness in relation to the concept, “Rooted”, a wide electric fireplace is placed in the main lobby.

CASUAL GATHERINGS

CONTINUING A SOCIAL ATMOSPHERE

Acoustical metal ceiling tiles, and fabric wallcoverings help keep noise levels down during the day.

After checking in, guests are welcomed to attend the cocktail bar within the hotel which features authentic drinks from popular, local ingredients native to Charlotte. During the day, guests are encouraged to use this setting as a place to work individually or network with other business professionals staying in the hotel, or local to the city of Charlotte.

NATURAL CONNECTIONS

Warm LED strip lights illuminate the cocktail bar that extend throughout the lounge at night

During late evening hours, guests are invited to attend the cocktail bar and lounge area that turns into a lively atmosphere as guests converse and share ideas naturally in a casual setting.

PRIVATE DINING ROOMS

In order to bring attention to the center of the room, strong symmetry was implemented for the design of this space which also carries the eye towards the screen used for virtual presentations.

A private dining room in the hotel’s restaurant was designed to accommodate larger business groups during their meetings to personalize their experience within the hotel. The purpose of this space is to bring business professionals into more casual settings rather than typical traditional meetings.

To carry out meetings successfully, business groups are allowed to use technologies and tools that are equipped within the private dining room that are available to them when reserved.

SAFE PLACE

After a long day of travel and work, guests can find their escape in their private hotel rooms. To keep up with business travelers needs, and to maximize guest satisfaction, interactive screens are placed by their beds for room service orders

ACCOMODATING ALL GROUPS

“Silenzio” lamps by LUCEPLAN, are wrapped with acoustical fabric and are suspended over the two beds in order to improve the acoustics in the room. In addition, acoustical veneer panels are installed, from floor to ceiling as well to warm up the space.
