CWT Spotlight Craig Bodenmiller, CWT

Water Treatment Division Manager. Technical Resources Group

What prompted you to obtain your CWT and when did you begin the process by taking the test? After joining the Association of Water Technologies a few years ago, I attended my first AWT technical training seminar, then the annual convention, and began listening to the Scaling Up podcasts. Hearing from other CWTs about how challenging the exam is and what the certification has done for their career was the biggest motivator for me. I am someone who likes to set goals for myself, and I work tirelessly to achieve them, whether it is in my personal or professional life. It was at that time, I purchased the Technical Training Manual and really started to dedicate my spare time to preparing for the CWT examination. What advice would you give those thinking about taking the exam? The best advice that I was given, and that I would recommend to those wanting to become a CWT, is to schedule the exam. Whether it is three or 12 months down the road, pick a date and get the examination on your calendar. Knowing when I was scheduled to take the examination made it easier for me to buckle down and really start preparing for it. Also, I would recommend purchasing the Technical Training Manual and attending the technical training seminar. There is a lot of valuable information that can be obtained from both of those, and at the technical training seminars, there are so many experts in the field that are willing to give their time to answer any other questions you may have.

How did you prepare for the test? I prepared for the test by purchasing the Technical Training Manual and going through it section by section. I read the same section several times before moving on to make sure that I fully understood the content. I found that the best time to do this was before going to the training seminars. This allowed me to write down questions that I had and gave me the opportunity to ask experts in the industry, which I found to be very helpful. The AWT online library and water treatment modules were also a great resource for me. Why do you feel this credential was important to have? I felt becoming a CWT was important, because I think that it shows your current and potential customers that you have the knowledge and work ethic to provide them with the best service possible. This certification was also important to me, because I have a Class III potable water certification as well; I feel that the more certifications I can obtain in the field of water and wastewater treatment, the more opportunities it will provide for our company and myself. Achieving my CWT has enhanced my self-confidence tremendously. What has been your greatest professional accomplishment? Passing the CWT examination and receiving the news from Angela Pike, congratulating me on becoming a CWT has been the greatest professional accomplishment so far for me in my young career. The examination was very difficult, as advertised; therefore, it was great to see that all of the studying I had been doing over the past few years paid off.
