We really value all the employers we work with, for whatever they bring to the College community, and we are proud to have been working with some businesses for over a decade!

Understanding the needs of an industry has always been at the heart of vocational education; making sure that the skills we teach, and the learning environments we provide match the expectations of the employer.

This is as true for a Level 1 course as it is for a T Level, or an apprenticeship.

Qualifications

VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Vocational courses - We’re just as passionate about our subjects as you are!

An apprenticeship is a real job which allows you to learn, gain experience of work, and get paid along the way. By the end of your apprenticeship, you’ll have the skills, knowledge, and experience you need to take the next step towards your chosen career.

Our vocational courses are a world away from what you may have experienced at school. At College, you can gain a nationally recognised qualification, real-world practical experience, and be taught by industry experts using state-of-the-art facilities.

The government has not released T Levels for all subjects, so we still offer a range of vocational qualifications which are validated by other providers, including University of the Arts, London and Pearson.

Our Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications are all one-year programmes, and our Level 3 courses are all two-years long. All our courses can be completed alongside a retake of either English or maths GCSEs as long as all other entry requirements have been met.

APPRENTICESHIPS

In May 2024, an Ofsted inspection once again rated our apprenticeship provision as ‘Outstanding,’ noting that “Apprentices rapidly acquire new knowledge, skills, and behaviours that employers value highly.”

We work with a huge range of businesses in Oxfordshire from sole traders to some of the largest employers in the County, here are a few you might have heard of: Blenheim Palace, University of Oxford, Oxfordshire County Council, BMW, Williams Advanced Engineering, Airbus Helicopters, DAF Trucks, Nielsen IQ and Diamond Light Source.

T LEVELS

T Levels are the newest type of vocational qualification, developed with businesses to ensure the content meets the needs of industry, and prepares students for work, apprenticeships (including degree apprenticeships), or application to university, (most universities accept T Levels).

One T Level is equivalent to three A Levels and a T Level Distinction* is worth the same number of UCAS points as 3A*s at A Level.

All T Level students work on an industry placement for at least nine weeks as part of their course. This gives them the opportunity to practice what they’ve learnt in the real world, and experience what a career in their chosen industry is really like.

We offer the following T Levels

Animal Care & Management

Computing (Networking and Cyber Security)

Engineering - Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing (Electrical and Electronic)

English & maths

Continuing to study English and maths at College is a brilliant opportunity, which can give you a fresh perspective to the subjects.

We know that English and maths aren’t everyone’s favourite subjects, but they will be important to your future whether you want to progress your education further at college, find an apprenticeship, get a job, or go to university. Whatever your starting point when you join college, if you need support, we’re here for you and will give you the best possible chance to leave us with the skills you need to succeed!

DID YOU KNOW?

In 2024, the number of our 16-18 year old learners achieving a grade 4 or above in English or maths GCSE has nearly doubled.

GCSEs

GCSE English and maths are the foundation of many careers and educational pathways. We teach these subjects in a completely different way from what you might have experienced at school and as a result we help many of our students to achieve a grade 4 or higher if they hadn’t quite got there at school.

Making English and maths relevant to you

It’s important to us that you understand what you’re learning and why it’s important. That’s why we tailor your English and maths lessons to make them relevant to your course. So for example, if you’re learning about dyeing hair, then we might focus on ratios to help with colour mixing.

Intelligent technology

Once you enrol on your course you’ll have access to Century, a software package that uses learning science, AI, and neuroscience to continually support your progress in English and maths. It can pinpoint your strengths and areas for improvement, adapting and providing the additional support you need, as you progress through your course.

Functional skills

We’re always looking for the best ways to help our students build their confidence in English and maths and that might mean starting with a functional skills course. If you’re studying on a construction course or in Access to Learning, you’ll benefit from these more practical courses which have specialist small class sizes and additional one-to-one support for students. All designed to give you the building blocks you need to progress onto studying for a GCSE.

Access to Learning

We believe that everyone deserves the chance to succeed. That’s why our Access to Learning programmes are tailored to support individuals based on their personal needs, as we enable them to access the learning that is right for them.

Students on these programmes have experienced a range of challenges. They may have missed elements at school, have EHCPs, specific SEND issues, or more complex needs.

If you are unsure of which programme applies to you, please contact us to discuss your individual needs.

Fast Forward

Our Fast Forward programme is designed for those who are not quite ready for a vocational course. This programme is designed to help you make quick progress with key skills that will help you progress onto a vocational qualification (see page 59).

Gateway

Our award-winning Gateway Team offer a student-led programme aimed at 14-18 years old who are not currently in education, employment or training (see page 63).

Pathways

Our Pathways programme is specifically designed for young people who have a range of SEND needs and currently have an EHCP (see page 77).

SEND

Special Educational Needs and/or Disabilities (SEND)

Abingdon & Witney College have high aspirations for every learner. By providing timely and appropriate support, our SEND Support team are here to help you be the best version of you!

Our support plans are different for every new learner. They will be based on your Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP), SEND support plan or through information you share with us and may include:

• Therapy provision including speech and language, occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Apprenticeships

ABINGDON-WITNEY.AC.UK/ APPRENTICESHIPS

Apprenticeships give you the chance to gain hands-on practical experience in the workplace, while getting the same qualifications you would achieve if you came to College on one of our full-time courses.

When you apply for an apprenticeship you’re applying for a job with a local business, not a course at college so there will be an interview process to go through, but don’t panic! We offer loads of support at every step of the application process, making sure that you’re a great match with the job and the employer you’ve chosen, and that’s before you’ve even enrolled.

Once you’ve started, you and your employer get exceptional support and guidance throughout the programme to give you the best chance of being successful.

We offer a varied range of different apprenticeship standards so there should be something to suit everyone. However, the jobs and companies can be very different even when they’re offering the same programme, so it’s best to look carefully at what they say about themselves and the role they’re advertising! Plumbing

As a plumbing student you will work with specialist tutors to develop your technical skills and understanding of plumbing. Our courses provide hands-on learning opportunities, including practical placements (which you will need to arrange) where you can apply your new skills in a workshop setting, supported by your tutors whenever needed.

Through project-based learning, you will learn how to master preparation tasks, including reading and understanding plans, measuring, bending, and joining of pipes; and how to carry out installation, and to complete testing tasks.

You will learn key electrical principles and processes for building service engineering, common plumbing processes, and scientific principles for domestic, industrial, and commercial plumbing.

As you progress, you will gain knowledge of cold-water systems, domestic hot-water systems, and common sanitation installations In our new Renewable Technology Suite, you will also be taught about renewable technology at the forefront of the industry.

Millie, a construction student in Witney was inspired to pursue plumbing by her uncle and is enjoying the course, which has boosted her confidence to build a career in plumbing after college. Millie hopes her journey inspires other women to follow their dreams.

the classroom Learning beyond

Every year, our public service students have the opportunity to get involved in bootcamps and external programmes run by the Forces.

In June 2024 the Army visited our Public Services students and delivered an insightful talk on the different military careers besides being a soldier. Students took part in practical activities which involved an army-style drill warm-up, a communication and teamwork task, and a casualty rescue and first aid task.
