We Are Plas Madoc Update

We Are Plas Madoc (WAPM) have been adapting how we run our services to meet the needs of our residents. We have a team of volunteers at hand to support residents when needed. Ongoing support include shopping, prescription collections and friendly chats. If you, or anyone you know are struggling, please get in contact. We can support you. Recently we secured funding from the Steve Morgan Foundation which enabled us to purchase activities for all. We also received a Wales’s Resilience Funding which enabled us to purchase fresh fruit and veg delivered to residents doors by a local supplier Convent Garden. Tesco funding enabled us to purchase Adult colouring books, crosswords, coloured pencil and snacks. These were distributed to 55 residents at Plas Telford and all bungalows in Plas Madoc.

We Are Plas Madoc Meeting WAPM are still having weekly meetings, adapted to the current situation they now take place via zoom. Currently there are meetings working towards the next plan, and we encourage residents to participate. Join the meetings every Thursday from 6pm. A Letter from The Land Recognising the importance of staying home and staying safe, playworkers for The Land have identified a way to support children playing and to help the wider community to feel supported and connected during this difficult time. Although currently closed to children, The Land Adventure Playground is being used by playworkers to think of ways to enhance the health and well-being of local families by enriching their use of time and enhancing opportunities at home. Most people in the community are fortunate in having an outdoor space, a garden which can be thought of as an extension to their homes, an outdoor room. Using reclaimed wood from local businesses the playworkers are busy designing and building benches for members of the community. All the benches are unique and made with the recipient in mind. Having a place to sit outdoors is of utmost importance – it helps to create a better quality of life, helps residents remain connected with the community and to the natural environment … which brings us nicely onto the planters. Alongside the benches, playworkers are designing and building trough planters from reclaimed wood. Once built, sanded and painted they will be distributed to children and families. These will give children the opportunity to work with nature – to be outdoors in the fresh air, have a chance to calm themselves and to relax. The team recognises the importance of children (and adults) interacting with the natural world and the positive impact this has on health and wellbeing. The playworkers tell us that from their experience on The Land, children have a natural love for the living world. The children on The Land love to engage with the elements – they dig, they love to garden and eat the herbs or strawberries they’ve grown. We hope you’re all well and staying safe – miss you all and can’t wait until we can open the gates again!

Lots of love The Land

Plas Madoc Leisure Centre Update

Since we closed the building on the 20th March we have continued to carry out all Health & Safety checks required and our Operations Manager is ensuring the building is prepared for our return to business. While we have been closed we submitted an application to the Welsh Government Economic Resilience grant scheme and were awarded £55,000. This grant is to support and safeguard the business and ensure we are able to reopen. It’s purpose is to contribute towards unavoidable costs through this period including all monthly bills e.g. utilities, intruder/fire alarm, insurance. All of these require payment despite us having zero income while we are closed. This grant has provided a major lifeline for the leisure centre and will ensure that it reopens when we are able to. Just before we closed we submitted an application to the Welsh Government to support a project to upgrade the pool changing rooms. This is an area where we constantly have negative feedback from, saying that it is tired and worn. We can’t argue with these comments and would love to modernise the area. This would be a major benefit to the centre and everyone who visits our pool. The application process has two stages and we have been notified that we have successfully passed the first stage. We now have 3 months to complete the second part of the application and would like to ask for the communities support with this project. We will be asking for your views over the next 3 months and would really like to hear your comments. Finally, we don’t have an actual reopening date yet but we are hopeful that it will be in August at the very latest. We may not be able to open all areas at once but could offer a reduced service. We are working on plans ensuring we follow the social distancing guidance and as soon as we have any dates and details of reopening we will let you know. Thank you for your continued support.
