Mr. Moran has been working temporarily at our school this term until Miss Cameron returns. He has been an outstanding and inspiring teacher of Technology and for the Literacy Enrichment groups and his contribution has been very much appreciated.

Cultural Performance Nights:

Congratulations to our students who have already completed two of the three outstanding performance nights. They have been outstanding examples of ‘striving for excellence’. You will have seen our ‘stars’ and have joined with us in feeling pride in their achievements. Thank you to our teachers. We are very fortunate to have a diverse teaching staff that can support and promote the variety of cultural groups within our school. These passionate and committed teachers have worked tirelessly to develop the performances, train the students and produce the concert that we have all been able to enjoy. Very special thanks go to the seven Cultural Group Leaders, the support teacher and the parent and community helpers who have supported our children. We thank you all for your support and will let you know how much has been raised this year through this project. The money that has been raised from these performances over the last three years has been used to further develop the cultural groups with costumes and resources. The profit from each of the years also has been accumulating and will be used for school-wide ‘cultural’ projects. In our next Newsletter we will be able to confirm how much we currently have in that fund.

Notices Enrolments – we are now accepting enrolments for Y7. All enrolments are taken with the Principal, Ms Pauline Cornwell. Absences: Please make sure that you call the school early in the morning if your child is going to be away. The health and safety of our students and staff members is of the utmost importance

SPORTS AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Sports Camp Last week 34 students, 2 teachers and 3 parents travelled to Matamata for our annual Sports Camp. We had an awesome week of sport based fun. Monday was all about getting to know how the camp worked and kicking off the week with cross country, swimming, shooting, archery, golf and scramball – these games gave us a taste of what was to come! On Tuesday and Wednesday we competed in our pool games attempting to qualify for semi finals. Thursday was semi finals and finals day. By Thursday 9pm we had become the camp champions in Girls Volleyball, Girls Basketball, Girls Indoor Hockey, Runners up in Girls Outdoor Hockey and Petanque. On Friday morning at Prize Giving we also received a further award – Runners up in Quality living. Our greatest reward was getting to spend the week away with good friends and team mates, awesome teachers and parents all the while doing things that we all enjoy the most. We will be adding more information, photos and video onto the ultranet page so be sure to check it out! A huge congratulations goes to Casey and Peni who won the Outstanding Girl and Outstanding Boy Athlete of the camp awards! These 2 students were selected by the teachers, parents and staff on the camp out 200 other students, as being the top athletes at the camp – what a spectacular achievement, we are so proud of their efforts! My personal response to media comments regarding National Standards Our school can show outstanding progress in the achievement of students over the two years they attend Avondale Intermediate School. This is reflected in and supported by the latest ERO report. In addition to the core subjects, reading, writing and mathematics, we provide a rich and varied range of educational experiences that provide our students with opportunities to realize and develop passion, expertise and knowledge. Furthermore we also provide support for students to explore languages that are meaningful to them, their families and community as well as experience cultures of which they may have limited understandings. Our school fully complies in all aspects of the requirement for National Standards which have little impact on improved outcomes for our students. We have spent a great deal of teacher time over the past three years coming to terms with their ‘implementation and reporting’ and in this the teachers have definitely gained some knowledge. The most important things, the things we value at our school, are the well-being, happiness st and support of our children, so that they can stand strong and powerful in the 21 Century. Academic achievement is one of the pillars for success, but only one. Our school will continue to provide a well-rounded, exciting and passion-filled education, regardless of the requirement for reporting against the National Standards. We aim to continue to work with parents and our community in this and thank you for your ongoing support. Regards Ms Pauline Cornwell, Principal Remember everyone is welcome to our whole school Assemblies held every Friday at 11.50am
