2018 Student Scholarship Catalog

Asheville City Schools Foundation Scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to Asheville High and SILSA. Applicants should meet these criteria: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Enrolled at Asheville High or SILSA and in their senior year. Attending a 2 or 4 year college or university in the next school year. Earned a weighted GPA of 3.0, (some exceptions may apply). Demonstrated good character in and outside of school. Supported the community through volunteer service.

The Asheville City Schools Memorial Scholarships have been created by the family members and friends of loved ones who held the Asheville City Schools and its students dear to their hearts. Each scholarship is given unique criteria based on the wishes of the memorialized individual or family members. The Bill Dechant Asheville City Schools Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who exhibits good character and leadership skills, has maintained a good academic average, has financial need and has a history of playing Field Hockey. The Jesse Mae Jones Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,500 to an African American female student from Asheville High School, with financial need, interested in entrepreneurial and/or culinary arts focus at a 2 or 4 year college. The Theda Rudd Asheville City Schools Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who exhibits good character and leadership skills, has a GPA of 3.0 or better with financial need, and expresses interest in education or another helping profession.

The Dr. Keith Black Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 to a student pursuing a health-related career, has participated in at least one extra-curricular activity, or works after school and has 3.0. Financial need is not a factor. The Commander Guy R. Bostain ROTC Scholarship is a one-time award of up to $4,000 for ROTC students with a history of leadership activities. Financial need is not a factor. The Mitchell Carlisle Memorial Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student ranked in the top 20% of their class who has been involved in athletics and participates in school activities. Financial need is not a factor. The Deutsch Family Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,250 to a student with financial need. To be eligible, students must write an additional essay about how they have promoted racial, religious and cultural harmony while in school. William E. Drake Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,500 to students who plan to attend UNC Chapel Hill, are in the top 20% of their graduating class and have worked to help support themselves while in high school. Financial need is not a factor.

The Lee H. Edwards Class of '48 Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,500 to a student in the upper 30% of the class with significant financial need who will attend a NC publicly funded four-year or community college. The Lee H. Edwards Class of ’51 Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,000 to a student with a history of volunteer service. Students planning to attend vocational schools are preferred. Financial need is not a factor. The Mel Hetland Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student of color who will attend a NC publicly funded college with significant financial need, who has a history of community service. Preference will be given to a student who is first in the family to attend college. The Jostens Scholarship is a one-time award of $500 to a student involved in extracurricular activities who also has a good academic average. Financial need is not a factor. The Bruce & Jean Larson Community Service Scholarship is a four-year renewable scholarship of $4,000 to one student payable at $1,000 each year for 4 years (subject to satisfactory performance and progress). It is awarded to a student who will attend a four-year college or university, has significant financial need, has a concern for others as demonstrated by significant community service activities throughout high school, and has an interest in and respect for cultural diversity as demonstrated by relevant school and community activities. The John B. Lewis Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who will attend a NC publicly funded four-year or community college. The student must have participated in team sports at Asheville High School, and show evidence of leadership ability, community service and /or employment experience. Financial need is not a factor. The People Helping People Scholarship from the State Employees Credit Union Foundation is a four-year renewable scholarship of $10,000, (subject to satisfactory performance and progress), payable at $1,250 per semester for attendance at one of the 16 constituent campuses of the University of North Carolina. Student must demonstrate leadership, excellence of character, integrity and community involvement. Financial need is not a factor. The Peterson-Stanley Future Educator Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who intends to pursue a career in education, has financial need, demonstrates good character and has had extra-curricular involvement and/or work experience.

The Seth David Shillcock Olson Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student who has participated in AHS athletics, is able to document a history of employment experience, volunteer service to the community and will be attending a publicly funded 4 year university. Paddison Family Foundation Scholarship is a four-year renewable scholarship of $10,000, payable at $2,500 per year (subject to satisfactory performance and progress), for students that have demonstrated excellent character, show evidence of leadership ability, and have extensive community service and /or employment experience. The Pepsi Cola Scholarship is a one-time award of $1,000 to a student with evidence of scholastic achievement and a desire to pursue higher education. Need is not a factor. The Reed Scholarship of Applied Awesomeness is a four-year renewable scholarship of $10,000, payable at $2,500 per year for 4 years (subject to satisfactory performance and progress), for students that have demonstrated excellent character and significant financial need. The Eleanor and Charles Wykle Scholarship is a one-time award of $2,000 to a student with strong academic achievement, a history of participation in school activities, and good character. Preference given to students with financial need, first generation college attendees, and/or students of color.
