MONTFORD NORTH STAR ACADEMY SCHEDULE Fall Session: September 11th - November 17th, 2017 Registration Due: September 5th Register Online: ​www.ACSF.org/irl​ or in Front Office irl (In Real Life) after-school, a program of the Asheville City Schools Foundation, brings together talented, passionate, and dedicated community members to offer a wide range of program offerings for MNSA students. High-quality after-school programming is essential to the healthy development of young people in our community. IRL supports student success in school and beyond. We bridge the opportunity gap by offering meaningful programming to all. We are committed to character development, academic enrichment, and FUN!

Dates: September 11th - November 17th Evaluations have shown participation in IRL IRL Programs: Monday - Friday 3:30 - 5:00pm improves behavior during the school day. IRL Study Hall: Monday - Friday 5:00 - 5:30pm We are committed to working with families and school personnel to problem solve IRL programs are cancelled on days when behavior issues. IRL provides free transportation.

The after school bus​ ​route between 5:45-7 depending on drop off location. Please complete the registration forms to secure a spot on the bus. MNSA bus policies apply.

IRL staff will check-in with students prior to next session to review expectations. In addition, IRL staff will provide behavior management support for Service Provider.

Expectations

If behavior continues, a parent conference will be required for continued participation, and/or student will be removed from IRL programming.

We want your child to have fun, learn new things, and be successful! Here is what we expect from all students.

We check attendance daily and will contact parents if a student is not present. Students with two unexcused absences may be removed from the program. Please report absences to IRL staff prior to 3:30pm.

BE KIND. W ​ e expect students to

demonstrate respect for service providers, peers, and volunteers.

BE ENGAGED!​ ​We do expect students to actively participate and follow directions.


Digital Filmmaking - My Voice and My Community- Off-site UNCA

Parks & Rec Adventure Experience- Off-site Montford Community Center

Do you want to be a Hollywood director? Collaborate with students and professors from the New Media department at UNC Asheville to ​create a short film​. Access the latest digital technology and professional equipment to tell your story.

Try out many popular outdoor activities over the course of the semester. We’ll spend two weeks on each activity trying our hands at some ​popular outdoor activities. Programs may include indoor climbing, disc golf, archery, geocaching, outdoor living skills, biking, etc.

JR Bulldog- Off-site UNCA Any person who has gone to college will tell you: college is the best! Experience the best parts of being a UNCA bulldog! Hang out with their sports stars, explore the coolest parts of the campus, take part in a few exciting classes, and learn ​what you need to do to get into college​. Spend time with high school leaders and college students. Have fun and set yourself up for success in college and beyond.


Journalism- On-site MNSA

Savage Worlds: RPG Club- On-site MNSA

A great journalist can change the world. Learn how to interview, craft exciting stories, and publish your work​! Learn alongside a real journalist and photographer. Your path to a Pulitzer starts here.

Explore the vast reaches of space, with a crew of cyborg space cops, finding new life forms and forming new diplomatic relationships. Or travel back in time to the old west and help close the time portal from the Jurassic period that has been bringing monsters to your home town. Work as a team and ​explore your creative side and have fun doing it. Play Savage World, a fun tabletop rpg game for beginners, and explore who you can be as a person.

Slacklibrium- On-site MNSA Have you seen our slacklines between the trees in front of AMS? Do you want to bring more balance into your life? In the Slack-Librium program, we'll learn a variety of techniques to help you strengthen your balance physically, mentally, and emotionally. Over 12 weeks of programming, you will ​become a trained Slack-Librium instructor​. Expect to learn everything you need to know about slacklining in addition to valuable mindfulness meditation skills. By the end of the program, you'll be ready to teach your friends and family!


Anime and Drawing- On-site MNSA

Asheville Ultimate Frisbee- Off-site MNSA

If you love to draw this is a club that can take your illustrating to another level. Learn drawing and coloring techniques. ​Master the style of anime​. Learn to draw a self portrait in your favorite cartoon style. You'll have the freedom to draw whatever you want. You'll be provided your own sketchbook too. Come learn from a talented artist who wants to have fun and see your skills improve.

Fostering spirited ultimate frisbee in Asheville is what Asheville Ultimate club is all about. An experienced coach will help you ​develop the skills, fitness, and teamwork to compete and have fun.

Art and Engineering- On-site MNSA Combine creativity and engineering to design and build incredible projects. Can you build a bridge that can hold 20 lbs and looks like a work of art? This maker-space is perfect for hanging out with friends. Prepare to be challenged, create, and ​become a talented engineer.

Darkroom Photography and Mixed Media- Hip Hop and Street Dance- On-site MNSA On-site MNSA A journey into Hip Hop dance and culture, with You don't have to have a fancy camera to be a focus on ​party dancing and the West Coast a photographer. In Darkroom Photography, Street Dances called Popping & Animation. Join we use shoebox cameras to develop prints in Otto (Aquaboogy Vazquez) who honed his the darkroom, and exploring other craft in Miami & New York and has stellar techniques, such as sun exposure, credits: Pitt Bull, Ne-Yo, Kanye West, Dr. cyanotype, digital photos, and hand coloring Pepper’s 2013 “One in a Billion” Nat’l black and white images. At the end of the Commercial, and the Broadway Series show, semester, ​you will have a completed portfolio “Break, The Urban Funk Spectacular”. to share ​with your friends and family. An Asheville Art Museum collaborative project.

Flag Football- On-site MNSA Are you ready for some FOOTBALL? Join other middle school students from across the district to compete in the IRL Football League. Focused on teamwork and skill development, IRL flag football is a fun and safe space to be competitive.


Gaming Club- On-site MNSA Does hanging out with your friends playing video games on sound like an awesome Friday afternoon? Learn how to play ALL the classic gaming systems from Atari to Xbox, and from Pong to Super Smash Bros. Get ready for good times and epic showdowns!
