SEVC 2010 President’s Welcome!
Dear friends,
I am very happy to welcome you to the wonderful city of Barcelona, which has so much to o er and so many places to see.
However, today we look forward to seeing you at Plaza España, at Fira de Barcelona, for the opening of the SEVC, the spectacular event that a great team of professionals has been organising for you for more than a year: the 2010 Southern European Veterinary Conference.
As you know, the Spanish Association of Veterinarians Specialising in Small Animals (AVEPA) has collaborated for four years with the North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC) to create the Southern European Veterinary Conference (SEVC), whose goal is to o er every attending veterinarian the best Continuing Education Programme in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery.
Again this year, the Organising Committee, which I have the honour of chairing, has chosen the Fira de Barcelona for the Congress’ venue. It is the same venue where SEVC 2009 was held, very successfully, because of its majestic buildings and its location in the heart of the city.
This year, we have made changes that we hope will improve the Congress:
• The number of simultaneous rooms has been reduced to seven;
• We start lectures one day earlier (Thursday afternoon), so every delegate has more choices;
• A free room is available at the Exhibition Hall where company representatives can exhibit their innovative ideas and products to others; and
• The Affinity Foundation Congress about Therapy with Animals will be held Thursday and Friday.
Our scientific programme is excellent, with unique aspects that set it apart. For example:
• On Thursday, 30 September, you will choose between a Dermatology programme by Peter Irhke (University of California, Davis), Reproduction by Autumn Davidson, (University of California, Davis) and an Oncology programme presented by Guillermo Couto and Pachi Clemente (Ohio State, USA and Spain).
• On Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you will choose between 12 specialties by lecturers such as Michael Schaer (Endocrinology, University of Florida), Michael Leib (Gastroentorology, VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine), Louise Clark (Anaesthesia, University of Edinburgh, UK), Richard LeCouter (Neurology, University of California, Davis), Mark Smith (Dentistry, Indianapolis) or Karen Gavzer (Practice Management, USA).
• Masterclasses, taught by experts, are one of the most effective learning experiences for clinicians.
• Workshops will be held in both the Congress Venue and the Veterinary School (UAB).
• Our International Programme for Nurses is famous worldwide.
• 100 free communications/posters in English and Spanish about the most recent studies in Veterinary Medicine and Surgery will be presented.
We have also organised a Social Events Programme that guarantees you will have a great time. I strongly recommend that you don’t miss the Grand SEVC Fiesta on Saturday night.
This programme is result of the hard work of AVEPA and NAVC members, but it would have been impossible without our sponsors. Many thanks to them all, and especially to Affinity, Hill’s, Nestlé-Purina and Merial.
Finally, thank you for choosing to join us for this four-day Congress. On behalf of the Organising Committee, I wish you a very pleasant stay in Barcelona and a wonderful Congress.
Maite Verde - SEVC 2010 President
