Nuevo principio activo: Emodepside

Emodepside es un nuevo principio activo que actúa frente a nematodos (Ascáridos, Ancilostomas y Tricuros). Maximiza la eficacia frente Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Ancylostoma caninum, Unicinaria stenocephala y Trichuris vulpis. Presenta un nuevo modo de acción fijándose al receptor de la latrofilina a nivel presináptico, lo que produce la parálisis y muerte de los parásitos, sean adultos o larvas. ¿Por qué conformarte con adultos si también puedes eliminar las larvas?

Profender comprimidos de liberación mod ficada para perros. Composición: 1 comprimido para perros pequeños contiene 15 mg de prazicuantel y 3 mg de emodepside, para perros medianos contiene 50 mg de praz cuantel y 10 mg de emodepside y para perros grandes contiene 150 mg de prazicuante y 30 mg de emodepside. Propiedades farmacológicas: Emodeps de actúa en la unión neuromuscular por estimulac ón de los receptores pres nápticos pertenecientes a la familia de receptores de secretina, lo que produce la parál sis y la muerte de los parásitos Prazicuantel se absorbe con rapidez desde la superficie de los parásitos y actúa produciendo un cambio en la permeabi idad del Ca2+ de las membranas de parásito, o que provoca una lesión grave en el tegumento del parás to, contracción y parálisis, la interrupción del metabolismo y finalmente lleva a la muerte del parásito. Indicaciones: Para perros que sufran, o con riesgo de sufrir, nfestac ones parasitarias mixtas causadas por nematodos: Toxocara canis (adulto maduro, adulto inmaduro, L4 y L3), Toxascaris leonina (adulto maduro, adulto inmaduro y L4) y Ancylostoma caninum (adulto maduro e inmaduro), Uncinaria stenocephala (adulto maduro e inmaduro) y Trichuris vulpis (adulto maduro e nmaduro) y causadas por cestodos: Dipylidium caninum, Taenia spp., Echinococcus multilocularis (adulto maduro e nmaduro) y Echinococcus granulosus (adulto maduro e inmaduro). Contraindicaciones: No usar en cachorros de menos de 12 semanas de edad o de peso inferior a 1 kg. No usar en caso de hipersensibi idad a os principios activos o a alguno de los excipientes Precauciones de uso: Para los perros: En perros extremadamente déb les o que tengan la función hepática o renal gravemente comprometida, Profender debe utilizarse de acuerdo con la evaluación beneficio/riesgo efectuada por el veterinario. No se recomienda el tratamiento durante la gestación y lactancia Para la persona que administra el medicamento: Lávese bien las manos después de administrar los comprimidos En caso de ingestión accidental, consulte inmediatamente con un médico y muéstrele el prospecto. Interacciones: El tratamiento combinado con otros fármacos sustratos/inhibidores de la glucoproteína P podría originar interacciones farmacocinéticas. Las posibles consecuencias clín cas no se han investigado. Posología y modo de administración: 1 comprimido de Profender para perros pequeños por cada 3 kg de peso. 1 comprimido de Profender para perros medianos por cada 10 kg de peso. 1 comprimido de Profender para perros grandes por cada 30 kg de peso. Una sola toma por tratamiento es eficaz. Administrar únicamente en ayunas. Por ejemplo, se recomienda no alimentar al perro durante la noche si se pretende tratar a la mañana siguiente Se puede dar alimento a partir de las 4 horas de administrado el tratamiento. AN INTERNATIONAL EVENT!

Following the success of the previous conferences, AVEPA (the Spanish Small Animal Veterinary Association) have again joined with the NAVC (The North American Veterinary Conference) to host the annual Southern European Veterinary Conference (SEVC ) from 1-4 October 2009.

This combined e ort and successful partnership has given birth to the biggest Veterinary Conference in Southern Europe providing the veterinary community and practitioners with a rst-class continuing education event. The Conference combines a wide and varied scienti c programme with an opportunity for visitors to enjoy the mild Mediterranean climate in one of the nest facilities that the city of Barcelona has to o er.

The SEVC mission is to present the veterinary community with the latest advances in animal care in an environment of professionalism, fun and sun. The social calendar will include daily lunch at the conference centre and the not-to-be-missed “Grand SEVC Fiesta”.

Dear Colleagues,

From the city of Barcelona, we would like to invite you to take part in this special event open to all veterinary practitioners dedicated to the care of companion animals: from the 1st to the 4th of October in Barcelona.

The North American Veterinary Conference (NAVC) together with the Spanish Association (AVEPA) have been organising the Southern European Veterinary Conference (SEVC) for the last three years, working to o er the best continuing- education program in Companion Animal Medicine and Surgery to all those veterinarian who chose to join us.

At the SEVC 2009 we provide you with a special meeting place: the Palace of Congresses on the Fira Barcelona site next to Plaza de España - It´s in the heart of the city and well located for beaches, museums, typical old quarters, restaurants, airports, and for experiencing the magni cent high speed train (AVE) connecting Barcelona with Madrid in the centre of the country in three hours and with Cordoba or Seville in the south in less than ve hours – Direct from city centre to city centre.

The Organising Committee along with the Scienti c committee and the Specialization Committee have worked for over a year on the development of a high-quality educational program that can meet the needs of all those who attend by using various teaching methods while visitors can also bene t from the collaboration of almost 100 experts from all over the world – willing to share their knowledge with all present and who can be simultaneously heard in both English and Spanish.

At the SEVC.2009 you will nd among the many things on o er, the following:

- Nine Simultaneous conferences, with a sample from almost all specialties; from Friday the 2nd of October until Sunday the 4th.

- One additional congress day on Thursday evening when there will be a discussion on two fascinating subjects –Collective Medicine and Acupuncture.

- Pre-congress seminars on Feline Medicine (A nity) and Clinic Management (Hill’s).

- On Saturday morning a group meeting will try to reach a Consensus on the diagnosis and treatment of Leishmaniasis.

- Interactive Classes for up to 15 people, held by a Master or Expert in the eld. (Master Classes).

- Workshops both at the congress venue and at Barcelona’s Autonomous University. (UAB).

- An International Nursing program for ATVs (Assistant Veterinary Technicians)

- An international Open Golf tournament and the Gran Congress Fiesta.

SEVC Final Scientific Programme

Congratulations! If you have received this Final Programme lea et, it is because you are attending the SEVC 2009. All the information relative to the Scienti c Programme is in this lea et. It has been designed to provide attendees with an overview of the Scienti c Programme for each day. Be sure to refer to the updated version and not earlier versions sent by mail or downloaded from the SEVC web site.

SEVC Registration Desks

SEVC 09 Registration Desks are located in the Hall area at the Barcelona Congress Centre. Please collect your badge and documentation there. Use this point for any questions regarding the Conference or for onsite registration for the Scienti c Programme, the International Nursing Programme, Masterclasses, Workshops and the “Grand SEVC Fiesta”.

For your convenience the registration desks will be open at the following times:

Unattended Bagagge

Please do not leave your belongings unattended. SEVC will not be responsable for any lost items.

SEVC Registration Badge

Please look after your registration badge and badge holder. It provides access not only to the Conference Rooms but also to the Exhibitors Area and authorizes you to collect your Certi cate of attendance at the “Bayer Cyber corner”. Each badge has a barcode which will be read by SEVC personnel upon entering any of the above mentioned areas. Co ee and lunch tickets are also included in the badge holder.

Security personnel have been instructed to refuse admission to anyone not wearing an o cial SEVC name badge. In case of loss or damage, the organisation will provide you with a new badge. Lunch and co ee tickets won’t be replaced.

SEVC Conference Bag

Collect your Conference Bag with your Badge at the Registration Desk. This year’s Conference Bag is sponsored by “Advance by A nity”. Each Bag contains the SEVC Final Programme, SEVC Exhibition guide, SEVC Proceedings CD, SEVC 2010 Conference First Announcement and other Exhibitor information.

SEVC Speakers’ Room

This room is located upstairs on the second oor of the “Barcelona Congress Centre”. Access is limited to SEVC speakers and authorized personnel only. The opening hours are the same as for the Registration Desks. Sta o cials can be identi ed by their blue or white SEVC shirts. Any of these individuals will be pleased to assist you if you have any questions about the SEVC.

SEVC Simultaneous Translation Earphones

All rooms o er Simultaneous Translations to English and Spanish with some other languages such as Polish available on occasion. You can collect your earphones at the designated tables. It is compulsory to leave a National Identi cation Card, Passport or 300€ in cash as deposit. No credit cards, Hotel room cards or Presentation Cards will be accepted. Please return the earphones at the end of each day to allow for the batteries to be recharged

SEVC Conference Rooms

All Rooms will be open for 5 minutes in-between lectures. After this time all rooms will be closed to give privacy to those present. A member of sta will check delegates’ badges when coming into or out of the room.

Rooms will be locked during Co ee breaks and Lunch breaks. All delegates will be asked to leave the rooms at this time.

Food or beverages are not allowed in any of the Conference Rooms. SEVC does not permit the sound or video recording of all or part of any of the Conferences.

SEVC Proceedings CD

Each SEVC delegate receives an SEVC Proceedings CD when collecting documentation at the Registration Desks. The CD contents are included in English and Spanish. It contains most of the SEVC Scienti c Programme and International Nursing Programme proceedings as well as information on Speakers.

Collect your SEVC Scienti c Programme or SEVC International Nursing Programme Certi cate of attendance at the “Bayer Cyber Corner” located at the Exhibition Area next to Bayer Healthcare booth. It is compulsory to show your SEVC Registration Badge. Other Certi cates can be collected at the Registration Desks.

SEVC Free Communications / Posters

WHAT IS AN SEVC FREE COMMUNICATION?

Every year the SEVC Organizing Committee invites all veterinarians to present a FREE COMMUNICATION (relating to clinical investigations –including research studies-, prospective and retrospective studies, etc.) or an original CASE REPORT that presents new or alternative information to clinical veterinarians of small or exotic animals. Once the summaries have been received, they are evaluated by members of the AVEPA Scienti c Committee and other international expert evaluators using only the assignment code of the essay; never with the name and personal details of the author.

Authors of all accepted Papers are asked to be make their presentaion available in Poster format during the Conference to all interested veterinarians. The author of the paper should be available for questions during the “Poster Presentation by the author and Final Evaluation”, at the meeting to take place on Saturday 3rd. October at the “Posters Area”. The evaluators will announce the best Posters during this presentation. The “Best Poster” winners will make an especial presentation on sunday morning.

All Posters are presented in the language wether the author has determined.

The SEVC Masterclasses will take place at the SEVC Venue (Barcelona Congress Center) Please note that they are separate to the SEVC Scientific Programme and that it is compulsory to be registered for the SEVC Scientific Programme, before you can register for the masterclasses.

This seminar will discuss various problems related to abdominal surgery. Dehiscence and leakage of an intestinal incision can result from poor choices by the surgeon at the time of surgery. Postoperative infections following intestinal surgery will be discussed and di erential diagnoses will be included. Lack of attention to detail can sometimes lead to unwanted problems following abdominal surgery. A case will be discussed that demonstrates this principle. Good success is usually associated with the surgical correction of acute gastric dilatation-volvulus. However, we will discuss several potential problems that could lead to the death of an animal following a successful gastropexy. Prevention of these problems will be emphasized.

After attending this session, participants will have an enhanced understanding of the complexity of diagnosing heartworm infection in cats, the role of transient heartworm exposure in the development of persistent Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD), and the potential role of Wolbachia bacteria in clinical heartworm disease syndromes in cats.

The objective of this lab is to make the participant more comfortable in performing some surgical techniques that are at beginning to intermediate level, although some more challenging techniques will be included.

The lab will have a short lecture/description, of approximately 30-45 min about the technical aspects of the procedures that will be later performed on a cadaver animal; the practical sessions will then be approximately 2 ½ hours: a team of 3 participants will be assigned to each cadaver. One member of the team of 3 will be the primary surgeon with the other 2 assisting with a particular procedure. Ideally, the role of the primary surgeon will be shared equally between the 3 individuals assigned to each cadaver as they work through several procedures planned for each session. The laboratory design will be similar for the morning and afternoon sessions.

The morning session lecture will cover gastric dilatation–volvulus, liver diseases, and biliary tree disorders. The laboratory session will include incisional gastropexy technique, liver biopsy, liver lobectomy, exploration of the biliary tree and cholecystectomy. The afternoon session will have a short lecture on intestinal diseases amenable to surgery and urinary bladder disorders. Laboratory session will include enterotomy, end-to-end anastomosis, serosal patch techniques, cystotomy, and tube cystostomy. Instructors will rotate between each of the tables allowing the participants to have contact with ALL of the instructors. This will help ensure that everyone on each team will be exposed to a broad amount of skill and expertise of all instructors present. By the end of the laboratory sessions, each participant should be more at ease when faced with the challenge of doing some or all of these common surgical techniques done in most veterinary practices.

In this wetlab, participants will have an opportunity to learn several practical techniques such as intraosseous catheter placement, injection sites, air sac cannula placement, and how to place an esophagostomy feeding tube. Working in pairs and under the supervision of an instructor, participants will learn and perform surgical procedures such as ingluviotomy and crop biopsy, tracheotomy and trachectomy, left lateral celiotomy for gonadectomy and ventriculotomy, ventral midline celiotomy to perform the di erent techniques for cloacopexy, and cloacotomy.

Working in pairs, registrants will perform the surgical techniques on pidgeon cadavers. This wetlab will provide veterinarians with an opportunity to learn about clinical and surgical procedures in avian practice and to gain technical skills in working with these species.

A half day wet-lab for veterinarians who want to obtain valuable training on numerous treatment procedures that are essential to the successful management of emergency/critical patients. After a very short introductory video-lecture, participants will be teamed up into small groups (3 persons in a group) and will rotate through di erent stations, where they will perform all the procedures listed below on cadavers, under direct supervision of ve Emergency and Critical Care Veterinary Specialists. The excellent participants/instructor ratio will ensure that all attendees will be able to carry out and learn all the procedures during the time allocated.

The procedures reviewed will be:

VASCULAR ACCESS: a. Central venous catheter placement: Seldinger technique, peel away technique. b. CVP measurement. c. Cut downs for venous access on: jugular vein, cephalic vein, saphenous vein

FEEDING TUBES: a. Naso-esophageal/gastric tube placement. b. Esophagostomy tube placement.

RESPIRATORY SYSTEM: a. Emergency tracheostomy. b. Techniques for oxygen administration: nasal, transtracheal catheters. c. Thoracic drains.

ANALGESIA – ANESTHESIA: a. Epidural injections and catheter placement. b. Intercostal blocks.

ABDOMEN: Peritoneal drain, diagnostic peritoneal lavage. At the end of this lab, participants should be able to perform the above mentioned emergency and critical care procedures.

The goals of this course are to familiarize attendees with the use of the microscope to make interpretations of cytologic specimens from a wide range of tissues. Di erentiation of in ammation from neoplasia and the diagnosis of speci c types of neoplasia will be discussed. Each attendee will be allocated to a microscope and will review each case individually.

Cases will then be discussed collectively using a videomicroscope. Brief presentations will be given prior to each group of cases as a preview for the changes that are present on the glass slides and that are representatives to certain pathologies. This is a very interactive laboratory with opportunity for individual attention from each of the instructors.

Abdominal ultrasonography practical class designed to help delegates learn basic ultrasonographic skills, gain knowledge of ultrasound anatomy, and receive guidance and feedback from experts. Participants will be teamed up in small groups to work on cadavers. The lab is divided in two parts: First part: immediate medical procedures, urethral catheterization and post-obstructive care. This part includes a “round table” with open discussion about medical emergency management of the blocked cat (controversies, ect.) and a wet-lab about cystocentesis and urethral catheterization on cadavers. Second part: surgery on cadavers. Everything you always wanted to know about urethrostomy but were afraid to ask. Throughout the lab we will answer questions such as: should an IV catheter be placed? Is a chemistry panel necessary? What kind of parameter do I need? Can I start my uids even if bladder decompression cannot happen immediately? What kind of uids do I use? (Lactate of Ringer, which contains potassium or NaCl 0,9%, which is acidifying). Do place an ECG even if the patient is not bradycardic to determine any e ects of hyperkalemia? What are the classic ECG changes associated with hyperkalemia? When do I start on speci c medications to protect the heart (calcium gluconate) and promote intracellular shift of potassium (insulin, dextrose, and/or sodium bicarbonate)? Cystocentesis: pros and cons. Urethral catheterization: How can I sedate or anesthetize my blocked cat? (Stable versus unstable cat). What kind of urethral catheter can I use? What tricks and helpful technique(s) are available? Do I perform abdominal radiographs? Important aspects of post-obstructive care: Fluid therapy and monitoring of urine output. Analgesia and sedation. (buprenorphine, fentanyl, hydromorphone or acepromazine?). Electrolytes and renal values monitoring. Antibiotics? How long should I let the urinary catheter in place? How long should my cat be observed after catheter removal to ensure e ective spontaneous urination prior to discharge?. Urethrostomy: Pros and cons.

When is a good time to perform it? What kind of procedure can I use? At the end of this lab participants should be able to unblock a blocked cat. They should also be able to answer all the questions above. Finally, they will never be afraid to perform a urethrostomy.

BEHAVIOUR MODIFICATION TECHNIQUES IN CANINE BEHAVIOURAL MEDICINE

Become familiar with the basic concepts of behaviour modi cation. Learn practical tips and techniques including desensitization and counterconditioning.

The prevention and treatment of most canine behaviour problems should include the use of basic behaviour modi cation techniques. During the last decades the use of punishment, negative reinforcement and ooding has been progressively replaced by more e ective and welfare-friendly techniques, like desensitization and counter-conditioning.

Systematic desensitization (including counter-conditioning) and di erential positive reinforcement are the behaviour modi cation techniques most commonly used in the prevention and treatment of a wide range of behaviour problems, including social phobias, aggression and thunderstorm phobias. Also, training exercises based on gradual exposure to potentially aversive situations are extensively included in puppy seminars.

After a very brief theoretical introduction, the lab will concentrate on making the clinician familiar with the practical tips and pitfalls related to the use of the aforementioned behaviour modi cation techniques. Participants will be teamed up in groups of three people and will work with dogs adopted from a rescue center in the area of Barcelona. For the safety of participants, no dogs with a known history of aggression towards people will be allowed.

Come ask the authors about their research! All posters authors are asked to be present for questions and evaluation to chose the best Posters while you enjoy a glass of Spanish wine!

COMPLIMENTARY CAFÉ

Help yourself in the complimentary co ee areas open throughout the Conference in Pavilion 8 (from 10:00am-11:30am and 2:30pm-6:30pm). Tea, co ee, orange juice and still water will be served. Mu ns and fruit will also be available during Conference Co ee Breaks.

LUNCH TRAYS

All conference delegates get two vouchers at the Check-in Point at Pavilion 5 when registering. One is for Friday’s lunch and one for Saturday’s.

Exchange these vouchers at any of the ve lunch points located within Pavilion 8 between 1pm and 3pm.

Vegetarian Lunch trays: If you have not asked for your vegetarian meal during your online registration, please ask for Ticket exchanges at the Registration Desks in the hall in Pavilion 5. Extra lunch tickets area available at Resgistration Desks for only 15€.

CASH BAR

There will be a bar open from Friday to Sunday during Exhibition Area opening hours. The bar only accepts cash, lunch vouchers will not be accepted.

One thing Spain is famous for is its “Fiesta”.

Every year the SEVC invites all Conference delegates to its annual “Grand SEVC Fiesta”.

Enjoy a typical Spanish Fiesta with Live Shows, Spanish Tapas food, beverages and music to dance through the night.

This year the Fiesta will take place close to the conference venue, right in front of the Magic Fountains of Montjuïc.

Niko Costello back at SEVC!

Incredible artist, who has made people from all over the world stand up on their feet for over an hour! This year he comes to make us all have fun till late! Born in Argentina, Niko Costello has worked in Radio and Television for the last 15 years. He became famous in Spain as one of the winners of the TV show “Tú si que vales” (the Spanish version of “Britan’s got talent”) thanks to his version of the song “We are the world” where he interprets over 15 different voices. WILL YOU MISS IT?

It is compulsory to bring the Party Invitation to enter the Grand SEVC Fiesta. Non Conference delegates can buy their tickets at SEVC “Registration Desk” (30€).
